Guardian Sworn In As A.C. Mayor By Ray Schweibert
F
ollowing his attendance of an interdenominational service at St. Nicholas of Tolentine Church that morning, Don Guardian was sworn in as Atlantic City’s 49th mayor at noon Wednesday, Jan 1, in the presence of a packed house at Atlantic City’s City Hall. Congressman Frank LoBiondo conducted the swearing-in ceremony. “Today is a new beginning for Atlantic City,” said Guardian. “We will work our hardest to help Atlantic City grow to its fullest potential … The Atlantic City of 2014 is a diverse, multicultural city that is poised for a new beginning. In the spirit of that theme, we hope to work together and to encourage unity to once again make our hometown vibrant and successful.” Guardian, 60, has served as the head of Atlantic City’s Special Improvement District for more than 20 years, and is the city’s first Republican mayor since the late James Usry left office in 1990. He listed among his priorities as mayor addressing the city’s crime problem, streamlining the process for developers to build, putting vacant land back on the tax rolls, and working closely with N.J. Gov. Chris Christie on matters that concern Atlantic City. Guardian stated that he will soon unveil initiatives to attract new commercial and residential development to Atlantic City. Beginning at noon Tuesday, Jan. 14, during the Metropolitan Business & Citizens Association (MBCA)’s winter luncheon, Guardian will perpetuate a long tradition of Atlantic City mayors presenting their New Year Address and Unofficial State of the City address. The event will take place at Caesars’ Palladium Ballroom at noon and will also serve as an opportunity to meet the mayor’s new cabinet and senior staff. Guardian has served as the MBCA’s vice president for more than 20 years. He is also the organization’s secretary. Visit mbcanj.com for more information. see more online @

hat were officials from the Atlantic City Alliance doing in Las Vegas last weekend? The non-profit organization’s president Liza Cartmell, chief strategy officer Jeff Guaracino and communications director Ed Salvato were attending the New Media Expo (NMX), Jan. 3-6, where they not only kicked off the city’s social media campaign for 2014, but also hosted the Official Tourism Cocktail Reception for NMX attendees to preview some of the “big news” for 2014 in Atlantic City. “We felt like NMX was the perfect venue to launch our 2014 social media campaign,” explained Cartmell. “We recognize the importance of social media on the extension of the DO AC brand and we want to tap into the influencers at NMX to help create the buzz necessary to drive people to visit AC.” During the weekend event, which attracts some of the top bloggers and digital content creators, the ACA had a set agenda, which, according to the ACA, was tremendously successful. “We need to make A.C. cool in the digital and online world,” says Guaracino. “We went to promote A.C. in the digital world, to develop partnerships with the most influential online celebrities with the biggest followings and largest fan bases on topics A.C. excels in — including food, entertainment, gaming, live entertainment and outdoor activities. Miss America [who joined the ACA for the first-ever live @VisitAC Twitter Chat on Saturday] was a rock star. Our DO AC Twitter Vending Machine was the coolest thing at the expo booth.” And the most common comment at the expo, according to Guaracino? “A.C. has a great beach! Vegas is a desert.” During the weekend, the ACA recruited and interviewed online influencers in order to partner with 50-75 of the top bloggers and content creators to “become Atlantic City advocates.” They will expand the city’s image, drive traffic to doatlanticcity.com and stimulate new visitation, hopes the ACA. Adds Salvato: “[The trip] was very successful. We set out to launch our robust new media campaign and recruit and interview bloggers, podcasters and other influencers and we achieved both goals. We were the only destination marketing organization represented and we were quite popular. Our cocktail reception was the talk of the evening and attracted close to 200 attendees. The ACA’s 2014 social media campaign focuses on travel, shopping, dining, nightlife, entertainment and gaming. In 2014, goals for the campaign, according to the ACA, include: attending major bloggers events/conferences like NMX throughout the year and recruiting AC advocates, hosting and sponsoring Twitter chats as well as DO AC Twitter and Facebook takeovers, launching Instagram initiatives to show AC through photographs, stimulating meeting and convention visitation through LinkedIn, and hiring new DO Crew brand ambassadors for in and out-of-market events.
he “new” Bruce Springsteen album is a bit of a mess. It’s not, however, without its high points. Let’s back up. High Hopes is a batch of unreleased recordings from the past decade. It includes odd cover songs — such as Suicide’s “Dream Baby Dream” and the Saints’ “Just Like Fire Would” — and even revived tracks from the Boss’s own repertoire — “The Ghost of Tom Joad” and “American Skin (41 Shots),” as well as the Springsteen-sounding title track written by Tim Scott McConnell. Rage Against Machine’s Tom Morello lends his best ‘80s sounding electric guitar lines to the lessthan-cohesive collection just as say a Ron Wood would have done on a few tracks for a “new” Bob Dylan album from the 1980s, such as Knocked Out Loaded or Down in the Groove. As on those two albums, High Hopes includes some pretty bad stuff, such as “Harry’s Place,” but there are some glorious moments too, including album highlight “Frankie Fell in Love,” the new twist on “Tom Joad,” “Down in the Hole” and the interesting covers. Whether or not you know High Hopes is a compilation of unreleased or re-recorded material, it still makes for an uneven, retrosounding (saxes, synths and dated guitar sounds) collection of songs, none of which really work together well as a unit. — Jeff Schwachter

Not Time to Go Dark By David Spatz • feedback@acweekly.com

hen the curtain fell on the long-running production show Legends In Concert following its New Year’s Eve performance at Bally’s, Atlantic City essentially went dark when it comes to any sort of consistent weekday entertainment program. There’s no telling whether the show will return. It isn’t listed on either Bally’s or the Legends In Concert Web sites. And Caesars Entertainment — the parent company of Bally’s — has sold the Claridge tower, which is where the Legends In Concert theater is located. Right around the time the stage clones of Justin Timberlake, Johnny Cash, The Blues Brothers, Adele and Elvis were sending 2013 packing, I received an e-mail from an old friend. He’s been an Atlantic City regular for years, and he wanted to fill me in on his first trip to Las Vegas in more than 20 years. What do these seemingly disparate things have in common? Plenty, when I help you connect the dots. My friend was in Las Vegas for business, and he was amazed at the array and variety of entertainment offerings both on the Strip and Downtown. “There weren’t as many stars as I expected [maybe because it was during the holidays], but the one thing that struck me was that every other show seemed to be a Cirque du Soleil show,” he wrote.
He said the big difference between a business trip to Las Vegas and one to Atlantic City, which he does frequently, are non-gaming weekday attractions in the casinos. “The [hotel] rooms in Atlantic City stack up with the ones in Las Vegas, and Atlantic City can hold its own with restaurants, too. But it’s entertainment [or the lack of it] that’s the biggest difference,” he explained. “Even on an offnight in Vegas, you can always find a show. I can’t say the same for Atlantic City.” He said there’ve been times when he’s met with clients in Atlantic City who wanted to do something — like catch a show — after a day of business meetings. But entertainment was hard, and sometimes impossible, to find. “Sometimes I’ve been able to find a lounge to take [clients] to, but they’re usually looking for more than just a good cover band,” he wrote. “And I’m not just talking about in the dead of winter. The last few years, this has been in the spring and fall. I hate to say it, but other than gambling, there really isn’t a lot to do in Atlantic City, especially this time of year.” He said Atlantic City should consider “one of those big Cirque shows like they seem to have on every corner in Las Vegas.” OK, he was exaggerating. There isn’t a Cirque du Soleil show on every corner in Las Vegas. But there is one on eight corners, and there probably are some Cirque-style knock-
off shows, too. Now I’ve been to the dance enough times to know that a Cirque du Soleil show — or any large-scale production show — simply won’t work in Atlantic City from an economic standpoint. These shows are produced with budgets — literally — of tens of millions of dollars. Theaters and stages are often built to the shows’ specifications. Whether it’s a Cirque du Soleil show or another of the large-scale production shows, like the long-running Jubilee! at Bally’s Las Vegas, these are shows that are designed to “sit” for a while — years, actually — and their production costs are amortized over that period. Las Vegas casino resorts can do this because the average visitor’s stay is measured in days, and the city relies as much on first-time visitors as it does on repeat guests. Repeat guests go to Las Vegas, on average, a few times a year. In Atlantic City, the opposite is true. The average visitor barely spends 24 hours here, and the health of the city’s primary industry — which is gaming — relies heavily on repeat business. Where Las Vegas has a global reach and audience, Atlantic City’s appeal is still heavily regional — the 300-mile tankfulof-gas radius surrounding the resort. People often visit Atlantic City several times a month, not several times a year. It’s been demonstrated in the past that long-running production shows in Atlantic City have a limited shelf life because of the
facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly
number of repeat customers. The only reason a show like Legends In Concert could spend the better part of more than 20 years here — with an occasional break — is because the cast changed several times a year, essentially creating a new show for the regulars. But that doesn’t mean Atlantic City should give up on weekday entertainment. Yes, a couple of casinos have scheduled once-a-week weekday shows in January and February. But that’s not enough. Atlantic City casino revenue continues to fall, but this is one case where the spend-money-to-make-money philosophy should come into play. Casinos here should develop a costeffective way of offering weekday visitors, especially in the winter and during the shoulder months, some kind of quality entertainment. Word of mouth advertising shouldn’t be ignored. Imagine someone attending a winter convention or trade show here who goes home to tell everyone that there was nothing to do in Atlantic City except attend meetings and have good meal. Shows are what give Atlantic City an edge on regional competition like Pennsylvania, where that state’s gaming tax makes it fiscally difficult for casinos there to maintain an aggressive entertainment policy that could compete with Atlantic City. I get that Atlantic City’s soon-to-be-11 casinos need to cut expenses. I get that they’re in business to make money, not lose it. But now isn’t the time for Atlantic City to go dark weekdays when it comes to entertainment. n see more online @

Latin Fever at Eden Lounge
The recently revamped and revitalized Eden Lounge at Harrah’s has spiced up its mid-week lineup with Salsa Night Wednesday; Cuba Libre at the Trop also offers salsa nights. By Ray Schweibert • feedback@acweekly.com
C
Eden’s salsa series is hot.
‘We’re brining in some of the best salsa bands in the region.’ “We run those specials earlier in the night hoping to get customers to go up and grab a bite to eat, maybe have a couple of cocktails, then come down and enjoy Salsa Night at Eden,” says Weiss, who notes that Eden has also started a Liquid Brunch, to be run on select dates and during special events, from 11am-3pm and offering eight different hand-crafted Blood Marys, Mimosas and food options. *** Salsa Wednesdays is mid-week in the marina district, but if you long for spicy Latin beats and find yourself on the Boardwalk on the weekend, the venue that’s been rocking to the sounds of salsa, bachata, merengue and Latin fusion since it started in The Quarter at Tropicana is still at it. In conjunction with Latin Connection Family, Cuba Libre Restaurant and Rum Bar does its Viva! Fridays! from 10:30pm4am every Friday, with DJs spinning openformat Latin hits, top-40 and EDM, and the weekly Bailamos Latin Dance Party every Saturday (10:30pm-4am) that overlaps Cuba Libre’s famed Late Night Latin Floor Show 11pm-midnight, featuring professional salsa dancers, a master percussionist and specialguest DJs spinning salsa, merengue, bachata, Latin House and tropical dance music. Drink specials include $5 Bacardi Wolfberry Mojitos (available 11pm-1am), $5 Bacardi cocktails, half-priced Miller Lites, and $150 select bottle service all night. ■

ompared to some of its contemporaries, Eden Lounge has tended to have more of an edge in terms of an amped up entertainment slate, and a club vibe or destination designation rather than mere break spot from the gaming tables. In recent years it also seems to have been a bit of a work in progress, with its look and décor staying fresh in flurries instead of one fell swoop. That is, until recently. “We gave it a major facelift,” says Howard Weiss, Caesars Entertainment’s regional director of nightlife operations, eastern division. “We’d been doing a series of sort of mid-level facelifts over the past year-and-ahalf or so, but this was a pretty big makeover for us. “We added a lot of new comfortable furniture, we’ve upgraded the stage area and expanded the DJ booth allowing us to bring in some bigger entertainment, and we’ve brought in an entirely new spirit menu. We have several new scotches, rums, cognacs — different types of whiskeys, bourbons and high-end spirits that we feel really compliment the upgrades we’ve made to the décor.” Eden Lounge also launched about a month ago a mid-week entertainment option called Salsa Night Wednesdays (9pm-1pm) that — as with any other night at the lounge — is free to attend and offers complimentary dance lessons from 9-10pm. “The salsa promotion’s been going real well for us since we started it,” says Weiss. “Some people unfamiliar with the style of dance might be a bit scared to try it at first, so that’s why we’ve incorporated the free lessons. We’re doing it in conjunction with Latin Beat Magazine and bringing in live performances by some of the best salsa bands in the region.” During Salsa Night Wednesday, Eden also does $5 craft beers (offering about a half-dozen on tap), $5 Herradura shots, $5 Malibu Spiced Rum cocktails, and $7 Absolut cocktails and glasses of wine. Tied into the night’s activity are food-and-drink specials at two other locations on site — Dos Caminos (offering a $39 pre-fixe menu from 5:30-7pm, $5 margaritas and appetizers and DJ entertainment from 7-9pm), and the Steakhouse (A $39 pre-fixe menue, $7 sushi rolls, sliders and Tito’s vodka martinis, and $1 clams and $2 oysters on the half shell).

Since then it’s been, in his words, “a whirlwind couple of months.” Immediately launching plans for a Thanksgiving feast that served 440 patrons, followed by a New Year’s Eve extravaganza for 390, there hasn’t been time for much reflection. Or changes, for that matter, the humble, affable chef readily admits. “I’m a firm believer in not fixing things that aren’t broken,” he says. Huntzinger particularly lauds the assistance provided by general manager Ryan Bray and longtime kitchen staffer Darryl Adams as being “integral to my transition here.” On the day we meet, Huntzinger is the first person to arrive at the Knife and Fork. organization, stating that “[Landry’s CEO Tilman] Fertitta spares no expense.” Lured away briefly to work at a prominent Philadelphia hotel, Huntzinger continued to research employment opportunities closer to home. Seeing an ad for a position at Harry’s, he responded and received a reply straight from owner Frank Dougherty. After an audition meal, Dougherty, a hands-on, fourth generation owner/operator proposed a more prominent role. “Watching you cook, I think you’d be a better fit at The Knife and Fork,” he said. This pleasant surprise left Huntzinger a bit shocked. “Honestly I was taken aback, knowing the history of this restaurant and that it was an A.C. landmark. I was honored.”
is a rare treat, as various supplies are stored throughout the mesmerizing construct that dates back to 1912. Soon, a stockpot is hissing with angry sounds and wonderful aromas of lobster bodies, chopped into large pieces, a deliberate, traditional start for the house’s famed lobster bisque. Plenty of aromatic mirepoix — the classic mixture of onion, carrot and celery — joins the fray, developing deep, powerful flavor profiles which so characterize Huntzinger’s cuisine, like a trio of recent menu additions. The first, pork porterhouse, is a thick, succulent cut served with sweet potato/ Brussels sprout hash, Nueske bacon lardons and a Grand Marnier gastrique — a French take on sweet and sour infused with fresh rosemary. Or a richly marbled, barrel-cut 10-ounce ribeye, accompanied by a sauté of thin-sliced garlic, exotic mushrooms, broccoli rabe and long hot peppers topped by shaved parmigiana. A third seafood option, maple-and-pecan crusted salmon, is plated atop butternut squash puree along with a sauté of Swiss chard, diced caramelized onions and dried cranberries. On the night of our meeting, an exotic creation — a double-cut Cervena venison chop, imported from New Zealand — is featured as an entrée special. Marinated in red wine, brown sugar, soy, star anise and juniper, the deer is grilled and accompanied by herb-roasted Yukon gold fingerlings, port wine demi-glaze and golden hedgehog mushrooms. In a restaurant that virtually defined dining in Atlantic City for decades — right down to an extended sequence in season four of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire — Jim Huntzinger is a most sagacious addition. ■

he Knife and Fork Inn, Atlantic City’s iconic restaurant at the triangular corner of Atlantic and Pacific avenues, has a new chef in its venerable kitchen. Jim Huntzinger, a respected local culinary figure and a 1983 Holy Spirit grad, took the reins in early autumn. Meeting him on a frigid Saturday morning hours before the magical facility opens, one cannot help but be awestruck at the renovation accomplished by current ownership, the Dougherty family. To say the towering, Flemish-style structure has been returned to former glory is an understatement. Under Dougherty stewardship, the Knife and Fork has undergone nothing less than full-blown renaissance. What else should one expect from A.C.’s first family of restaurateurs, also owners of the even more ancient Dock’s Oyster House — which opened in 1897 — plus the casual eatery Harry’s Oyster Bar at Bally’s? Huntzinger’s path here began with graduation from the Culinary Institute of America in 1987. Older brothers Jeff — who passed away last year — and Greg, currently the chef at Mays Landing’s Brick House Pub and Grille, had by then already secured solid professional reputations in regional kitchens. In the years to come, the inventive, sometimes combative trio would establish one of southern New Jersey’s most original eateries, the eponymous Huntzinger’s American Food on Harding Highway just west of Mays Landing. The brothers all went on to work again together at the Taj Mahal during the early 2000s, Jim eventually landing at Trump Marina. Staying for some time during the transition to current Golden Nugget ownership, he has nothing but praise for Landry’s

Holiday Homecoming
Locally born magician Joe Holiday, who spent years on the road, is happy to have a steady gig at the Comedy Stop. By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com
M
agician and illusionist Joe Holiday is happy to be home. For more than 20 years, the Atlantic City native has been performing his magic both big and small in numerous places across the country and the world. His most memorable gig was as the featured guest star in international magician Franz Harary’s multi-million dollar illusion show Mega Magic seen by over a million people throughout Asia. At the moment, however, he has turned in his passport and is presenting an intimate magic show six days a week at the Comedy Stop at Tropicana. He is enjoying the chance to go home at night to his wife Sharon and their daughters Angelina and Maggie. He talked with Atlantic City Weekly about his return home. How did you get interested in magic? I saw a magic show when I was 13. After that show I learned how the tricks were done and learned my first trick, a card trick, from that magician. I sometimes show that trick to kids to keep the legacy going, I teach some classes now and then. Was your first gig that traditional magician’s start, working a kids’ party? Yes. It was a woman living in Margate, Marilyn Halpern. She talked with my mother and said it would be wonderful if your son could do some magic at my daughter’s birthday party. There I was standing in front of a bunch of kids in my blue confirmation suit doing magic tricks. I loved it. It was the first step of a hobby than turned into a career.
In this show you are doing small illusions and sleight of hand. Is that your preference or do you also like the big illusions? I love both. You need to have a good sense of sleight of hand magic. I’ve done large illusions and traveled overseas to perform for the military. At one point I was performing as the lead magician in a show that was more expensive and larger than David Copperfield has ever toured with [Franz Harary’s Mega Magic]. It’s intimidating to be standing next to a prop bigger than a car
The Show
Magician/illusionist Joe Holiday has been around the globe in his career, working cruise ships in the Caribbean, performing for our troops in South Korea and doing big-ticket illusions. However, for his return to his hometown at the Comedy Stop, Holiday has tailored his show to the intimate nature of the showroom. Sleight of hand, intimate illusions and effective comedy asides combine for an entertaining and family-friendly hour-long show that features audience participation. The show can be dinner theater if you so desire, with a special dinner menu available starting at 5:30pm before the 6:30pm magic show Thursday through Sunday. You won’t see a helicopter disappear from the stage, but you will see Holiday draw a bowling ball on a sketchpad and then see that bowling bowl come to life. He does classic illusions like the ripped newspaper bit, borrows a hundred dollar bill from an audience member that magically winds up in the middle of an orange and does a card trick in which a couple winds up with matching halves of the same card. The show also features a video component in which Holiday gives us a little historical background on his family and how he became a fan of magic that is a nice warm-up for the show that follows. One of his best “how did he do that” tricks involves having an audience member come on stage and pick out a number from a phone book. He then gives out seven envelopes to members of the audience and points out which envelopes should be opened in what order and yes, those numbers match the phone number selected. That’s a pretty nifty trick.
EVENT INFO Where: Comedy Stop at The Quarter, Tropicana. When: Daily except Wednesday, 6:30pm. Special dinner theater menu Thurs.-Sun., 5:30pm. How much: Adults, $20, $10 for children 10 & under; dinner approx. $10 additional.

O
nce again, greetings and salutations. Of course I am probably the last to wish all of you a healthy and happy New Year, but I’ll do it anyway. And as we look forward to 2014 let’s hope that all of the dreams we all share come true — people getting together, appreciating each and every one of us, trying to stay away from negative people, having a positive attitude, and moving forward in life with love, peace, and rock & roll. And just a reminder, the Kimmel show featuring legendary voices of the ’60s is just weeks away, and it’s going to be a memorable one, with Bobby Rydell, Jay Black Gary US Bonds, Jay Siegel’s Tokens, Eddie Holman, and Pat Upton, the great voice of the Spiral Starecase. Call 215-893-1999 or go online at kimmelcenter.org for a seat map and to purchase your tickets. Now, time for your questions — but first I’ve got some trivia for you: David Bowie, Soupy Sales, Elvis, and one of my favorite singers, Shirley Bassey, all have something in common. Can you guess what it is? Answer below. Is Memories in Margate open on Friday & Saturday nights all winter? — Franny, Longport Memories in Margate is open for special occasions and private events. If you’re interested, call Carol at 215-923-0550 and she’ll give you more details about how you can have a party or event at Memories. Geator, we used to frequent Bookbinders restaurant on 2nd Street in Philly and remember your photo on the wall. It has been vacant for so long, we were wondering if you knew whether there are any plans for it to reopen? — Audrey Goldstein, Cherry Hill The Old Original Bookbinders was one of my favorite spots and has been missed by many since it closed in 2002. However, news is that José Garces, who owns Amada and several other terrific restaurants in Philly, has plans to lease it and I’m sure he will create something worthy of that historic space. Just finished reading Neil Young’s autobiography. Great book. He said that the R&R Hall of Fame was ruined once it was put on TV. What is your opinion? — Artie, Ventnor
Chef José Garces
Not so. What you see on TV is edited because of the time limitations of the telecast, so you’re not really seeing everything that goes on at the event. But before TV picked up the rights, the presenter and inductee speeches would sometimes go on and on and on. Too often the actual ceremony was overly long and some of the speeches very boring. Many times the artists would use the opportunity to settle old grudges with record companies and management or air out their laundry and dissatisfaction with each other, which in my opinion is not cool. Unfortunately, the real issue of the many artists from our era who have been ignored by the Hall of Fame is still not being addressed. Jerry, still want to know what cabin you stayed in at Camp Dwight. — Ray Dilg, Sacramento, Calif. I stayed in Cabin #4, in the upper bunk so I could listen to my transistor radio late at night without bothering my bunkmates! Answer to trivia: All were born on Jan. 9. n

ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY • JANUARY 9 - 15, 2014
I liked that the video introduction in your show connects you to your Atlantic City roots. I did my first show on the Boardwalk at Brighton Park, and up at Steel Pier and many years ago I was one of the Lucille Russo kids [a local legend known for finding talented kids to perform]. And of course watching and seeing magicians from all over the world who performed in Atlantic City, meeting these people and spending time with them, learning about my craft.
and have girls dancing around the stage but you gain presence and about how to keep the audience’s focus on you. I do like sleight of hand and the intimacy of the Comedy Stop. It is incredible to be able to come home and do what I’ve done for years on the road. ■

2014 Oscar Tout Sheet Predictions for the Academy Award nominations being announced Jan. 16 By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com
I
t is that time of year again when I evaluate my own impression of the year’s best movies, look at the various critics awards, Golden Globe and SAG nominees and come up with my predictions for this year’s Academy Award nominees in the form of a racetrack tout sheet. (I saw a lot of those growing up since my dad was a fan of playing the ponies.) This was a solid year at the movies, with a couple of spectacular films and a strong group of second-tier pictures. After the Academy decided that 10 nominees were a bit much and revised the rules to have from 5 to 10 best picture nods, eight nods seems like the go-to number. For the record, these are my odds, not the Vegas line. The nominations will be announced Thursday, Jan. 16, at 8:30am, on the morning news programs. The Academy Awards will be presented on Sunday, March 2, 8pm, on ABC, hosted by Ellen DeGeneres.
Race 1: Best Supporting Actress • Lupita Nyongʼo, 12 Years A Slave • EVEN • Jennifer Lawrence, American Hustle • EVEN • June Squibb, Nebraska • 3 to 1 • Julia Roberts, August: Osage County • 4 to 1 • Margo Martindale, August: Osage County • 30 to 1 My choice from this group is Lupita Nyongʼo. Jennifer Lawrence is overrated, as is the film. Squibb has earned several criticsʼ awards and Julia Roberts is excellent in a change of pace role. Martindale is a longshot to edge out Oprah Winfrey for the final slot but I hope she does.
Race 2: Supporting Actor • Jared Leto, Dallas Buyers Club • 3 to 5 • Michael Fassbender, 12 Years A Slave • EVEN • Barkhad Abdi, Captain Phillips • 4 to 1 • Bradley Cooper, American Hustle • 6 to 1 • James Gandofini, Enough Said • 12 to 1 This is a three horse race with Jared Leto as the overwhelming favorite, followed by Fassbender and Abdi. My choice would be Fassbender. Personally Iʼd love to see Gandofini earn a nod as a farewell gesture.
Race 3: Best Actress • Cate Blanchett, Blue Jasmine • 3 to 5 • Sandra Bullock, Gravity • 4 to 5 • Judi Dench, Philomena • 2 to 1 • Emma Thompson, Saving Mr. Banks • 4 to 1 • Amy Adams, American Hustle • 10 to 1 Another three horse race with Blanchett running neck and neck with Bullock and Dench snapping at their heels. Although I was disappointed by “American Hustle” after all the hype, I thought Adams was fantastic.
Race 4: Best Actor • Chiwetel Ejiofor, 12 Years A Slave • 3 to 5 • Matthew McConaughey, Dallas Buyers Club • 3 to 5
facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly
• Bruce Dern, Nebraska • 2 to 1 • Tom Hanks, Captain Phillips • 4 to 1 • Robert Redford, All Is Lost • 10 to 1 • Forest Whitaker, Lee Danielʼs The Butler • 12 to 1 The brilliant Ejiofor is the only choice to win in this category, although McConaughey has an outside chance with all the criticsʼ awards he has earned. Veterans Dern, Hanks and Redford will have to be happy with the nomination although I would love to see the now overlooked Whitaker slip into the final slot.
Race 5: Best Director • Steve McQueen, 12 Years A Slave • EVEN • Alfonso Cuaron, Gravity • 2 to 1 • David O. Russell, American Hustle • 2 to 1 • Paul Greengrass, Captain Phillips • 8 to 1 • Alexander Payne, Nebraska • 20 to 1 My two favorite films of the year are “12 Years A Slave” and “Gravity” and I expect McQueen and Cuaron to be there at the finish. Iʼm not a fan of “American Hustle,” but many other people are big fans. Greengrass and Payne fill out the dance card.
The Oscar Derby: Best Picture • 12 Years A Slave • 3 to 5 • Gravity • EVEN • American Hustle • 2 to 1 • Captain Phillips • 4 to 1 • Nebraska • 6 to 1 • Saving Mr. Banks • 10 to 1 • Lee Danielsʼ The Butler • 12 to 1 • Her • 15 to 1 Again, “12 Years A Slave” and “Gravity” should top the list, but “American Hustle” will be there and so will “Captain Phillips,” which is also overrated, although Hanks and Badi give great performances. “Nebraska” takes the criticsʼ choice spot and despite all the acclaim, my gut tells me “Her” will be overlooked by the Academy as too offbeat. Iʼm hoping “The Butler” slips onto the list. ■

Trop Taps Second Beer Week Expanded across the board in its second year, including two additional beer dinners, Tropicana proves that beauty is in the eye of the beer holder. By Ray Schweibert • feedback@acweekly.com

JANUARY 9 - 15, 2014 • ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY
I
f your resolution is to broaden your horizons regarding the world’s most popular alcoholic beverage, and/or get a better handle on what the craft-brew craze is all about, visit the Tropicana during its second annual Beer Week Sunday through Saturday, Jan. 12-18. Playing off the success of its inaugural undertaking last winter, the Trop has grown the property-wide celebration to include two new beer dinners, and modification of another that was wildly popular last year when hosted by local beer expert Gary Monterosso at FIN restaurant. This year’s version will be overseen by Flying Fish owner/founder Gene Muller on Tuesday night (Jan. 14) at FIN, while Monterosso returns the following night for a new event called “Gary’s Top Five” that pairs five of his favorite brews with select fare at the Top of the Trop restaurant from 7-9pm Wednesday ($25 per person). “Beer dinners are very popular now, but early on, even going back to when we first started [in 1995 in Cherry Hill; since expanded and relocated to Somerdale], we’ve always designed our beers to compliment food just like wine would,” says Muller, whose Flying Fish Brewery is the largest craft brewery in the state. “I just got the menu for this one about a week ago and it looks pretty amazing. There’s going to be a nice selection — five courses paired with seven beers, including what will be one of the early premiers of our Exit 1 Bayshore Oyster Stout. It’s part of our Exit series [celebrating, through special brews and historic relevance, exits along

“We love doing the beer dinners — the atmosphere is relaxed and there’s a lower cost point that allows us to pass on a great value to the consumer, player or diner.” the Garden State Parkway].” The FIN dinner is $75 and starts with a sushi sampler, flatbreads and crab cakes paired with Belgian-style Abbey Dubbel and a special brew; Jersey littleneck clams and mussels paired with Exit 16 Wild Rice Double IPA; smoked Magret duck breast paired with Red Fish ale; Southwest lobster thermador paired with Hopfish IPA; Veal Scaloppini paired with Grand Cru Winter Reserve; and a banana chocolate tort and caramel-and-salted pretzel gelato with the Exit 1 Stout. “Demetrios Haronis, our director of culinary operations [who was voted Chef of the Year by the Professional Chefs Association of South Jersey in 2013] shines with his food-and-plate presentations,” says Ray Bertschy, Tropicana’s vice president of food and beverage. “Both dinners [last year, including a Goose Island Beer Dinner at FIN during Beer Week, and a Samuel Adams Beer Dinner sequel at FIN that quickly sold out last summer] had the brewers speak about pairing beers with the food [as will be the case with Muller and the Flying Fish Dinner Tuesday night]. We love doing the beer dinners — the atmosphere is relaxed and there’s a lower cost point that allows us
to pass on a great value to the consumer, player or diner. “This year we’ve grown [Beer Week] by having Amy Lewis, our director of nightlife and beverage, add two additional dinners, plus Gary’s Top Five at the Top of the Trop.” One of the new beer dinners will take place Friday night, Jan. 17, at Il Verdi Italian restaurant starting 7pm. An allinclusive $65-per-person cost will pair international cuisine with Peroni Nastro Azzurro lager from Italy, Estrella Damm lager from Spain, Warsteiner Premium Dunkel from Germany, Carta Blanca from Mexico, Carib from Trinidad and Kingfisher from India. Broadway Burger Bar is doing a special beer dinner Thursday, Jan. 16, at 7pm for $36 per person. Broadway Burger, one of six new dining establishments that opened at the Tropicana last summer, will also kick off Beer Week on Sunday, Jan. 12, with a Beer Brunch from 11:30am-4:30pm for $20 per person. On Monday, guests can broaden their beer knowledge with a free Beer 101 seminar conducted by a representative of beer potentate Anheuser Busch at Tango’s Lounge from 7-9pm. ■

Eddie Griffin Flies into Borgata The hilarious stand-up takes a break from caring for his nine children to perform in Atlantic City. By Ed Condran • feedback@acweekly.com
N
“You only go around once in this life,” Griffin says. “If you have the chance to race an amazing car, you got to go do it.” turd. We’ll bring in Eddie Griffin to save Deuce Bigalow.” Griffin, who has been consistently working in his new hometown of Las Vegas, is much more mellow these days. “I don’t worry about things like I once did,” Griffin says. “I’m happy doing stand-up. I’m not upset about things that I can’t control anymore.” Griffin is relatively content. Good for him since his life has been a succession of ups and downs ever since he was growing up in Kansas City. Griffin didn’t meet his father until he was 16 and positive male role models were few and far between. But his mother kept it together, encouraging her son to leave the Midwest for Hollywood. And, well, mother knew best. “She believed in me,” Griffin says. “I took a shot and it worked out.” Indeed. Griffin’s caustic, unpredictable wit
made him into a star. “I never expected that comedy could be a career,” Griffin says. “I was always funny in school. But once I focused on comedy, I was confident it would all work out. I love what I do.” However, a decade ago, Griffin kept a relatively low profile by design. He decided that parenthood took precedence over his career. Since then Griffin has spent considerable time with his nine children. “I wanted to be the father that I never had,” Griffin says. “I want to be there for my children and have as good a relationship with them as possible. No matter what anyone says, that’s what every kid wants.” Fans should note that if you’re close to Griffin, you might become part of the act. A fan actually sued Griffin a year and a half ago. She said she felt threatened by the comic during a performance in California.

o wonder Eddie Griffin thinks he could have been a pilot. The comic-actor seemed destined to take off into the stratosphere from the get-go and the 45-yearold has enjoyed much success during his unpredictable career. Griffin was half of the late 1990s sitcom Malcolm and Eddie that also featured Malcolm-Jamal Warner of The Cosby Show fame. “That was an experience,” Griffin tells Atlantic City Weekly prior to his Friday, Jan. 10, show at the Borgata. “I learned a lot.” After starring in the 2002 film Undercover Brother, the charismatic comic, who is direct as stand-ups get, scored praise for what seemed to be a breakthrough role in the spoof of blaxploitation flicks. “I thought that was going to lead to better things,” Griffin admits. “I had some issues with it at the time.” Just a few years ago Griffin was disgusted. “Hollywood is holding me back, man,” Griffin said during an interview four years ago. “It’s always Eddie Griffin with Orlando Jones. ‘Let’s get Eddie Griffin and polish this
“If you’re right in front of the stage, guess what? You might be part of the show that night,” comic Paul Mecurio explained. “That’s the way it goes. If you have a possible issue with that, sit in the back. Comics typically have fun with those in the audience.” Part of what make Griffin’s shows so entertaining is that you never know what the adventurous humorist will do during his set. Griffin is known for taking chances, mixing it up with audience members and having a good time. “I don’t know if you could say my show is an average, normal show,” Griffin says. “But then again, what is normal? My normal is not the same as another comic’s normal or your normal. I just do what I do. That’s what I’ve done since I started out in this business. I do things my way. I never followed what anyone else did. That just doesn’t make sense to me.” Griffin doesn’t just take chances on the stage. In 2007, he was racing a Ferrari Enzo during a charity contest at Irwindale Speedway in California. While practicing, Griffin lost control of the car and crashed. He was fine but he badly damaged the expensive vehicle. “You only go around once in this life,” Griffin says. “If you have the chance to race an amazing car, you got to go do it.” When Griffin was 28, he suffered a heart attack while working on Malcolm and Eddie. “I was eating pork every day of my life,” Griffin says. “I didn’t know how bad that was for you. I had bacon in the morning, bacon cheeseburgers. But I guess I can’t say you only go around once in life. I’m around twice. You can’t stop me.” Griffin is a smart, insightful comic, who doesn’t care what anyone thinks and that’s refreshing in this politically correct era. “I tell it like it is,” Griffin says. “Somebody has to. This is what I do. When I was a kid, I wanted to be a pilot. I think I would have been good at it. But it all worked out the way it was supposed to.” ■
