uilt in 1908 by William “Pop” Somers of Atlantic City and Somers Point, the Levoy Theatre’s long history includes life as a home for vaudeville shows, silent movies and talking pictures. After decades of changes, renovations and being designated as a structure of historic value by the State of New Jersey, the theater is part of the renaissance of downtown Millville in the Glasstown Arts District on High Street. The Levoy (126-130 N. High St., Millville. 856-327-6400. levoy.net) is currently presenting a robust schedule of plays and musical performers including in January, Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, the Harry Potter spoof Potted Potter and the Gin Blossoms. Here are the details: Jan. 23, noon, 7:30pm: Potted Potter, $38, $43.50, $25 student rate. Olivier Award nominated Potted Potter — The Unauthorized Harry Experience — A Parody’ by Dan and Jeff takes on the ultimate challenge of condensing all seven Harry Potter books (and a real life game of Quidditch) into seventy minutes. Written and performed by Daniel Clarkson and Jefferson Turner, Potted Potter is perfect for ages six and up. • Jan. 25, 8pm: Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, $39.50, $44.50. One of Asbury Park New Jersey’s favorite sons, Southside and the band have been on the national music scene since they were formed in 1974 by singer Johnny Lyon and guitarist/songwriter “Miami” Steve Van Zandt. • Jan. 30, 7pm: Gin Blossoms, $34, $37. The GB’s hits include “Hey Jealousy,” “Found Out About You, “Til I Hear It From You,” and “Allison Road” among many others.
The sophomore effort from Dave Hartley’s band Nightlands, Oak Island,, out Jan. 22 on Secretly Canadian, comes and goes like a dream. The sounds are lush and tranquil, best suited for nighttime listening with its 10 lilting and somber tracks. Hartley is the bassist for the fantastic Philly band War on Drugs and has also played sideman to Sharon Van Etten, Sondre Lerche and other notable outfits. On Oak Island, it’s apparent Hartley, the son of a genetic engineer, has been having a blast in his own lab, mixing acoustic and digital elements and distorting them, layering sounds with such instruments as trumpets and dulcimers, all while coating each tune with a retro-pop frosting. It’s mighty tasty, but not in the kid’s birthday party kind of way. — Jeff Schwachter

rincess, Inc. is a nonprofit organization based in Atlantic City and composed of female mentors who volunteer their time with the goal of cultivating a better lifestyle for young women in the region, namely Atlantic City and Pleasantville. Providing at-risk girls of color from ages 13-22 with a safe and positive environment, Princess, Inc. has become a widely supported and respected program within the community. Due to severe damage following Hurricane Sandy this past fall, the ladies’ former meeting space, the Atlantic City Police Athletic League (PAL) Building, was made unusable, and the group needs a new home. Having contacted local schools, the Atlantic City Free Public Library, and other public community buildings, Princess, Inc. has yet to find a new venue to house the group. The women meet twice a month (sometimes three times) on Thursdays from 5:30-8pm, and the only requirement is that they be allowed to bring food as they serve the girls nutritious dinners at each meeting. Automne Bennett, CFO and co-founder of Princess Inc., along with Indra Lyn Owens, are avid believers in the importance of giving these local young women trusting relationships within the group that is in a way “its own family,” according to Bennett. The group aspires to strengthen citizenship, assist with college and career planning, and educate on women’s health through a series of workshops and open discussions. “We have received great support from the community,” Bennett says of the group, whose success is evident in the 100 percent of its members having moved onto the next grade level, graduated, or been accepted to at least one college or university. If you have information on a possible meeting space available for these princesses, contact Bennett at 892-9544 or Owens at 287-4235. It’s important to support this positive force in our local community as it continues to change young women’s lives.

uthor and local beer aficionado Gary Monterosso articulates in print that the modern beer world “has grown far beyond the common pilsener-style beers brewed by the millions of barrels by conglomerate breweries,” and that today’s craft brews “rival wine in complexity, variety and sophistication.” The fervor has also given way to a host of lively local events with beer motifs, the latest of which is the Tropicana Beer Week coming Sunday through Friday, Jan. 13-18. The festivities include beer tastings and pairings, live music, beer-related specials at multiple venues throughout the property, and educational elements hosted by Monterosso and fellow beer expert Tara Nurin. Attendees can obtain a “beer tour card” and earn a collector pilsner glass at Signatures (pictured right, while supplies last) with six purchases at Beer Week, which the Trop intends to grow into an annual event. “We are thrilled to have beer experts Tara Nurin and Gary Monterosso here to host our events,” says Tropicana general manager Steve Callender. “Tropicana’s Beer Week is an opportunity to showcase our partners and the variety of beer we have to offer.” One of the featured events is the Goose Island Beer Dinner (see a complete menu at Tropicana.net) that Monterosso hosts at FIN restaurant on Thursday, Jan. 17, at 6:30pm. It includes a six-course meal paired with seven beers from the Goose Island craft brewery at an all-inclusive cost of $65 per person. “All the beers are coming from Goose Island out of Chicago, which really is one of the nation’s top craft breweries whose distribution rights were taken over by AnheuserBusch,” says Monterosso. “And while that may lead some to think ‘Oh God, are the big guys taking over?’ there’s a positive aspect to it, and that is that here on the East Coast we’re now able to try their beers. Ordinarily we couldn’t get Goose Island, but because of A-B’s relationship with them, and Harrison Beverage [of Pleasantville] being our local

A-B distributor, we’re now able to get Goose Island beer. Actually I think they debuted here in New Jersey at the 2011 Atlantic City Beer Fest, but this will make their products more readily available to us.” After the FIN beer dinner, Monterosso — whose enthusiasm for beer may rival that of Bubba for shrimp in Forrest Gump — heads to Firewaters in the Trop to conduct a free two-hour seminar starting 7pm. “What I’ll probably do is choose four diverse beers from Firewaters’ extensive tap lineup and show the audience different aspects of beer appreciation — how a beer looks as far as coloration, is it clear or is it cloudy, is there an aroma, is there much foam retention or is it flat — and one is not necessarily better than another, it depends on a matter of style. “As with wine people, things such as these are done before you take your first sip, then after you take your first sip you might Sliders and suds consider the flavor components of the beer — is it sweet, is it malty, is there a hop bitterness coming through. Basically how I evaluate beer, or what I might ask my clientele, is ‘would you like another one or would you buy this beer?’ And if the answer is yes, you’ve probably found something that you’ll really enjoy.” Monterosso will be giving away a copy of his book Artisan Beer: A Complete Guide to Savoring the World’s Finest Beers during the presentation at Firewaters. “[Firewaters] brings in some very, very good beers and they rotate their lineup regularly,” he says. “They’re up to date on seasonals, they have a knowledgeable staff, and the beer is always fresh. It’s a little gold mine here in Atlantic City.” Nurin, a columnist for the beer publication Ale Street News and founder of the blog site Beer for Babes, will conduct two free seminars at Tango’s Lounge from 9-11pm Wednesday, Jan. 16. The first is entitled Beer and Chocolate Pairing and the other is Beer Cocktails. For a detailed list of all Beer Week events, including special room accommodations, visit Tropicana.net and click “Beer Week.” ■ see more online @

hirty years ago, Mark Giannantonio was a motivated 18-year-old kid looking to put himself through college working the night shift as a room service waiter at Atlantic City’s first casino. Today, the kid who once schlepped midnight snacks to Julio Iglesias’ suite will be the one who signs the singer’s next paycheck. Earlier this week, Giannantonio added an exclamation point to his career when he became president and chief executive officer of Resorts Casino Hotel. It was a pretty quick trip to the top; Giannantonio had been hired several months earlier as Resorts’ vice president of operations. “This place is a very special property to me, having started my career here,” Giannantonio said. “When I worked here in 1982, Atlantic City was just humming. The property was just so vibrant [and] you never knew which stars you were going to run into in the hallways. ... Those days were so very impactful to my career.” Giannantonio, 49, just might have the ultimate local-boy-makes-good story. It wasn’t long into his first casino job that Giannantonio realized he wanted a career in the industry. “I worked 40 hours a week while I was going through college,” he said. “The reality of it is that I immediately knew that I liked the industry. I used to work nights, so in the morning I’d be sitting in an economic class and the previous night I’d be taking care of Julio Iglesias or some of the big stars or some of the biggest gamblers of the time. I loved the fact that it was a people business and service was important.” After college, Giannantonio began working his way up the ladder at several properties. From Resorts, he did a stint at the former Golden Nugget while it was morphing into Bally’s Grand. Then came a stop at the former Trump Marina, which today is the new Golden Nugget. Then came 23 years at the Tropicana Casino & Resort, where Giannantonio got his first taste of the boss’s office. He worked his way up at the Trop until he could go no higher — he became the property’s president and chief operating officer at a time when the property was in turmoil. But about three years ago — even as the Trop’s fortunes were on the rise — Icahn decided to make a change and replaced Giannantonio with Tony Rodio, another longtime Atlantic City casino executive. By last September, with job prospects at the upper levels of the Atlantic City casino industry in short supply, Giannantonio was preparing to do something he thought he’d never have to do — move away from Atlantic City. He was about to accept a job in San Diego. “I had my entire career here
Mark Giannantonio
“I feel almost an allegiance to Atlantic City.” in Atlantic City, and I feel almost an allegiance to the city,” said the man who grew up in Ducktown, Atlantic City’s predominantly Italian-American neighborhood. “So for me to relocate from the city where I was born, it may sound a little corny, but I was a little melancholy about it.” That’s when he got the call from Gary Van Hettinga, president of Mohegan Gaming Advisors, the business arm of the Mohegan Indian tribe. That company now operates Resorts and owns a minority stake in the casino that’s mostly owned by New York City real estate mogul Morris Bailey, who is also an Atlantic City native. Years ago, Van Hettinga and Giannantonio worked together at the Trop. “He opened the door [for me] here, and I was just thrilled to come back to be part of the team here at Resorts,” Giannantonio said. Although his formal title is president and chief executive officer, Giannantonio’s unofficial title is about to be CPO — chief parrotthead officer. By Memorial Day, Resorts will begin rolling out singer Jimmy Buffett’s wildly successful Margaritaville brand. “It’s a wonderful project, the scope is upwards of $60 million that we’re going to be spending between [now] and ... right before the summer,” he said. Although it’s Atlantic City’s first casino, is among its smallest and is primarily housed in a 90-year-old building, Giannantonio said he loves the size of the property because it allows Resorts to provide a particular level of service. “The nice thing about Resorts is that it’s a building you can really get you arms around,” he said. “You can provide a level of service that is exceptional, and in some of the bigger places it’s hard to do that consistently.” n

Perhaps best known for his Goat Boy character during his time on Saturday Night Live and starring along side Dave Chappelle in the cult stoner favorite Half Baked, the comedian remains one of the biggest names in entertainment today. Included among Comedy Central’s “100 Greatest Stand-Ups,” Breuer’s one- hour special, Let’s Clear the Air, earned the highest ratings in the network’s history. Along with countless film and television appearances, Breuer hosts his own Sirius/XM radio show Fridays at 4pm, which has featured everyone from Bill Cosby to Tommy Lee. His stand-up is often inspired by his family, which consists of his wife of 19 years, his three daughters, and his aging father. Through his recent book, I’m Not High (But I’ve Got a Lot of Crazy Stories About Life as a Goat Boy, a Dad, and a Spiritual Warrior), and his stand-up material, audiences get to see Jim Breuer the husband, the father and the son. The comic is slated to return to Atlantic City Saturday, Jan. 12, 8pm, at the Borgata. The show is a rescheduled concert from November due to Hurricane Sandy. In a phone interview with AC Weekly around that time, Breuer talked about his tour, upcoming special, and what success really means to him. So, you’re heading back to Atlantic City Nov. 2 for your upcoming show at Borgata. What will this tour be like? Yeah, this is part of a new tour called “Something For Everyone.” I’ll be filming this special and the special will be called All Grown Up. A brand new one-hour show like the one we did last year. And you were here in August for the Metallica Orion festival, how was that? It was freakin’ awesome! It was so awesome. What’s cool about that is it brought me back to playing with a band, which I used to do years ago, and which I’m actually in the process of doing again. This is probably the last stand-up tour you’ll see for a while, toward the end of next year I’m going to start coming out with the band again. I think one of the most interesting things about your comedy is that you continue to make people laugh without cursing or discussing inappropriate topics. That’s why I call it “Something for Everyone.” I like the people who are catching on saying, “Oh I can bring my wife, or my girlfriend, or my kids, or my grandparents, or my aunt!” Everyone can find it hilarious. And that’s very crucial.

“I will never shy away from ‘Half Baked’; it’s a hilarious, great movie. But people do mistake me for being that guy and I’m the furthest thing from that guy.” In watching your specials, your stand-up, and reading your book, the audience really gets to see a different side to you than the Half Baked stoner persona with whom many people may associate you. You really are a family man at heart it seems. You know, I will never shy away from Half Baked; it’s a hilarious, great movie. But people do mistake me for being that guy and I’m the furthest thing from that guy. I got three kids, my father lives with me, most of the stand-up is powerful, funny, edgy, dark family material. So, I don’t talk about pot, I’m the furthest thing from that guy. You have been in this business for so long, from SNL to present day. In a society where there are so many failed marriages and broken families, especially those in the spotlight, you’ve seemed to really keep it together. You’ve been married for 19 years, have three daughters. What is your secret to holding everything together while juggling the roles of performer, son, husband, and father? Well at the end of the day, with every aspect of every magazine, and every dumb show, and what we hold at a high standard is Hollywood CEOs and “be all you can be,” and “make all the money you can” — it doesn’t matter how successful you are in the world of making money and being a star. It matters how successful you are being at home, and that’s what makes and creates and gels lives. So, that’s where you need to be most important. And that’s where you need to be the most successful. If you’re not successful there, then really, no matter the amount of money you make or how famous you are, you’re chasing dreams that don’t exist. ■

hile he is celebrated for his wow-factor big illusions much like good friend and professional inspiration David Copperfield, Steve Wyrick told me in an interview a few years back that, “My favorite magic to perform is sleight of hand. I got my start with street magic in Dallas. I still like the mega-illusions, but I think it’s a really interesting balance.” Wyrick has been a headliner on the Las Vegas Strip for more than a decade so his extended stay at the Golden Nugget is a rare chance to see him perform on the east coast. His new multi-media show is highlighted by making a full size airplane appear on stage nightly. — Lori Hoffman

ast year the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences decided that an automatic 10 nominees for best picture watered down the quality somewhat and created a complex mathematical system that provided a minimum of five nominees and a maximum of 10. Since there were nine nominees last year, it didn’t exactly tighten up the race, and I suspect there will be at least eight best picture nominees this year. While there are the usual stone-cold lock Oscar nominees this year, the Academy is jumping the gun with its early announcement of nominations. This was done because the Academy members were sick and tired of all the other awards like the Golden Globes watering down the Oscar excitement by announcing its winners before the Oscar nominations were even released. Beyond the most obvious choices, the early nomination announcement means I’ll be using my best guess when it comes to filling out my annual Oscar Tout Sheet, predicting who the nominees will be in the form of a racetrack tout sheet. These are my odds, not the Vegas line. The nominations were announced this morning, Thursday, Jan. 10, at 8:30am, on the morning news programs. The Academy Awards will be presented on Sunday, Feb. 24, 8pm,
on ABC, hosted by Seth MacFarlane. Race 1: Best Supporting Actress • Anne Hathaway, Les Misérables • EVEN • Helen Hunt, The Sessions • 2 to 1 • Amy Adams, The Master • • 4 to 1 • Maggie Smith, Best Exotic Marigold Hotel • 6 to 1 • Sally Field, Lincoln • 7 to 1 My favorite from this group is Helen Hunt, but Anne Hathaway at least could really sing in the live-recorded Les Miz. Field will enjoy her return to the Oscar spotlight but won’t win. Maggie Smith gets added credit for Downton Abbey. Nicole Kidman earned Globe and SAG nominations for the terrible movie The Paperboy but won’t get an Oscar nod. Race 2: Supporting Actor • Robert De Niro, Silver Linings Playbook • EVEN • Alan Arkin, Argo • EVEN • Christoph Waltz, Djanjo Unchained • 4 to 1 • Tommy Lee Jones, Lincoln • 6 to 1 • Leonardo DiCaprio, Djanjo Unchained • 12 to 1 Oscar loves Bobby D and he hasn’t been
Race 3: Best Actress • Jessica Chastain, Zero Dark Thirty • EVEN • Jennifer Lawrence, Silver Linings Playbook • EVEN • Emmanuelle Riva, Amour • 4 to 1 • Naomi Watts, The Impossible • 6 to 1 • Marion Cotillard, Rust and Bone • 10 to 1 I’d love to see Jennifer Lawrence win since she showed an amazing flair for comedy in SLP with enough of the serious moments Oscar voters prefer. Chastain is great as a determined CIA analyst but my second place vote goes to Watts as a tsunami survivor looking for her family. This very foreign group is expected to have two Frenchwomen in the race, Riva and previous Oscar winner Cotillard. Race 4: Best Actor • Daniel Day-Lewis, Lincoln • 3 to 2 • Bradley Cooper, Silver Linings Playbook • EVEN • John Hawkes, The Sessions • 5 to 1 • Hugh Jackman, Les Misérables • 6 to 1 • Denzel Washington, Flight • 10 to 1 This is a two-horse race between DayLewis and Cooper, but my guess is that playing a president wins out over a bipolar romantic. Didn’t like his movie but Washington was terrific as a drunk, and the Academy loves convincing drunks. They also love people with handicaps (just ask DayLewis) and Hawkes was fabulous as a man in an iron lung in the touching Sundance hit The Sessions. I’m not a fan of Les Miz, but Jackman was the best thing in it. Joaquin

Phoenix was a frontrunner right after the Toronto Film Fest, but The Master faded badly. Race 5: Best Director • Kathryn Bigelow, Zero Dark Thirty • EVEN • Steven Spielberg, Lincoln • 2 to 1 • Ben Affleck, Argo • 2 to 1 • Ang Lee, Life of Pi • 4 to 1 • David O. Russell, Silver Linings Playbook • 10 to 1 Bigelow shattered the glass ceiling as the first woman to win an Oscar for best director for The Hurt Locker, and she is back in a war zone with a shot at a second. Spielberg is also at the top of the heap, and Affleck has plenty of fans. Lee has earned raves for his inventive use of 3D, which is the main reason he will be in the mix. Most predictors figure Tom Hooper gets the final nod for Les Miz but I’m predicing that Russell’s popular dramedy will earn him the final slot. The Oscar Derby: Best Picture • • • • • • • • •
Lincoln • EVEN Argo • EVEN Silver Linings Playbook • 3 to 1 Les Misérables • 4 to 1 Zero Dark Thirty • 6 to 1 Amour • 9 to 1 Life of Pi • 10 to 1 The Impossible • 12 to 1 Djanjo Unchained • 20 to 1
The three films with the most acclaim are Lincoln, Argo and SLP. I’m not a fan of Argo and I love SLP, but if Lincoln wins, I’ll find that acceptable. I also didn’t like Les Miz, but it will earn a nomination, despite some well deserved critical backlash. So will Zero Dark Thirty despite the “torture” controversy. Personally I’d love to see Djanjo on the list but this time Tarantino’s violence level was way too much for Oscar voters. My gut tells me The Impossible and Life of Pi will make the cut, as will the Cannes best picture winner Amour. I expect eight nominations but I’m hoping it is nine with Django. ■. see more online @

An upscale yet cozy atmosphere and eclectic menu await at The Continental By Frank Gabriel • feedback@acweekly.com

The Sammy Davis Room @ Continental
“It’s also one of Atlantic City’s coolest places to hang, watch the water, waves and people, suspended high above the roaring ocean.” stretched, had been liberally tossed with thin sliced portabellas, shiitakes and shallots. Cut into four irregular, angled pieces the bread contained just enough grated cheese to add creaminess, without compromising the crisp structural integrity. A house signature, the Continental Salad, followed. Like most chopped items of this sort it was loaded with fresh greens — lettuces, cucumbers and celery — plus tomatoes and feta cheese along with herbal dressing. Be forewarned; this is a man-sized serving, easily enough to satisfy four hungry diners. This brings us to another fact about the restaurant itself. There is pretty much some-
thing for everyone on their voluminous bill of fare, with upwards of three-dozen selections. The same holds true for ambiance. With multiple seating areas, one can choose to sit near the entrance and bask in the warmth of a cozy fire pit, as we did on this bitterly cold evening. If that open atmosphere isn’t to your liking, private dining spaces, each possessing its own distinct personality, stretch throughout the roomy environs. It’s also one of Atlantic City’s coolest places to hang, watch the water, waves and people, suspended high above the roaring ocean. My dining partner opted for a new menu addition: chicken and waffles.
facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly
A pair of small waffles sat angled atop one another, anointed by strips of white-meat chicken and then covered with traditional white gravy. Despite this savory preparation, we couldn’t help ourselves, and asked for maple syrup to add a degree of sweetness. Once combined, we relished the unusual confluence — cheddar, fried chicken, waffle and syrup — and fully expect this southern favorite will soon become very popular here. My entrée, the only addition on this night, was a 16-ounce boneless rib eye. It arrived having been properly rested and then expertly sliced into a dozen wide cuts. Alongside, creamy mashed potatoes and roasted asparagus completed the platter. Still juicy, the rib eye — our personal favorite steak — ordered and delivered at a not-as-easy-as-it-looks Pittsburgh rare, was jam-packed with intense, beefy aromas. Our first dessert, vetted by general manager Jonathan Karp, was the blonde bombshell — a blonde brownie covered with double malted ice cream and butterscotch sauce. Karp is a story all by himself. Once one of the A.C. area’s most daring and inventive young chefs, he ran a seminal eatery called Jonathan’s West End in Chelsea Heights 10 years ago. Recruited by Starr shortly after The Continental opened and moved to the front of the house, he’s been here six years and is one of the town’s most knowledgeable food industry folks. He should be, having started working in family eateries at the tender age of 11, more than 30 years ago. My choice of sweet was the simple, but beautiful beignets and berries, three empanada-like versions of the classic N’awlins pastry, served with blue, straw and raspberries plus a pool of elderflower honey. n see more online @

s the flagship enterprise of the Starr dining empire, The Continental — situated center stage on Level 3 of The Pier Shops at Caesars — nicely represents a wide array of food genres in a casual, upscale atmosphere. Grazing is the order of the day. All items are presented family-style, usually for the table, and delivered just as soon as ready. It’s a unique concept calling for welltrained, flexible staffers, capable of expediting lots of food quickly. We began a recent weekend meal with three items: Korean pork tacos, pan seared scallops with soba noodles and a mushroom flatbread. The pair of tacos were large, bordering on burrito-size girth, and stuffed with tender slices of sweet roasted pork. A piquant Korean BBQ — heavy on both garlic as well as chiles — added contrasting flavor profiles. Each tightly wrapped taco brought two or three bites of perfectly executed global tapas, exactly as advertised on the menu. The scallops had been singed until light brown outside, left properly cool within. They were plated atop a cradle of auburn-hued honey soy butter, complex and rich. As tasty as those elements were, they might have been outdone by the accompanying tangle of skinny noodles. Soba — made from buckwheat, actually a cousin of rhubarb and incredibly healthful — is dark in color and hearty in texture. Tossed with a tangy, sweet-hot peanut sauce, our only small issue was that we felt this item would have benefited if served warm, rather than at room temp. Either way, we loved the creative combine of seafood and soba, accented with nuts, honey and soy. The oblong flat bread, clearly hand-

Endless Options at East Bay Crab & Grill
as Shrimpfest, while Thursday’s prime rib special is accompanied by trivia at 7pm. Further, to kick start the weekend, the restaurant offers a DJ and karaoke on Friday nights starting at 6:30pm. The Happy hour is extensive, and the early bird specials are available from 3:30-5pm, Monday through Saturday, and noon-5pm on Sunday. While the options seem endless, and the “All-U-Can-Eat” seems bottomless, one thing is certain — East Bay Crab & Grill promises to provide something for everyone.
Seafood lovers have anchored down at East Bay Crab & Grill in Egg Harbor Township ever since Charles Armstrong came aboard as owner and operator of the restaurant in March of 1995. With options like tilapia francaise, jumbo lump crab cakes, and the savory New England clam chowder, it’s not hard to see how East Bay has developed into a seafood mecca. Still, it’s not just seafood that keeps customers onboard — popular dishes such as the baby back ribs and chicken marsala prove that the restaurant’s focus is as diverse as it is delicious. Weekly specials at East Bay have also been known to draw crowds. The popular “12 Entrees under $12” is an all-day deal that features favorites such as seafood lasagna, mile-high meatloaf, and mussels posillipo. Crabby patrons are always delighted by the “All-U-Can-Eat” portion of the menu, which provides a continuous supply of hard shell crabs, Dungeness crabs, and snow crab legs. As if those options were not enticing enough, Tuesday’s are known

A Night at the Speakeasy
Sassy singer/songwriter Beth Tinnon brings back to Dante Hall her classy musical retrospective on the decade known as the Roaring ’20s. By Ray Schweibert • feedback@acweekly.com
Unlike such variables as song selection, expertise of contributing musicians, commitment to authenticating video backdrops, wardrobe, stage settings and other components, timing is not always something Beth Tinnon, or anyone else, can control. But when the popular local singer/songwriter first debuted her many-sided show called A Night at the Speakeasy: A Musical Journey through the ’20s, her timing was impeccable in one regard, a bit less so in another. Tinnon premiered the production to an appreciative audience at Dante Hall in June 2009, right around the same time the pilot episode for another retrospective on Prohibition-era America was picked up by HBO. Boardwalk Empire has since won 12 Emmy awards and counting. In the latter case, Tinnon’s one-night production was seen on the same night a Grammy-winning jazz vocalist/pianist headlined in Atlantic City. “I story-booked it and put everything together, and only then did I notice ‘Oh my goodness, Diana Krall is in town on the exact same night,” says Tinnon. Regardless, A Night at the Speakeasy was extremely well received — so much so that Tinnon tweaked it a bit and strategically brought it back as a unique entertainment option for those who enjoy the resort town during the off-peak seasons. It was originally scheduled for November but pushed to Saturday, Jan. 12, at Dante Hall (8pm) by Hurricane Sandy. “There’s a lot of change going on in Atlantic City, and I thought why not provide

“The songs progress in chronological order through the ’20s and I’ll talk about what was going on at the time as far as the architecture, gangsters, crime and the St. Valentine’s Day massacre, women voting for the first time in the national election, the Great Depression.” something for the folks who are still here?” says Tinnon. “There are still quite a few people coming to Atlantic City this time of year who are not just here to gamble, and for some it may be the only time of year they can afford to go away on vacation. I understand there’s a smaller percentage of people coming this time of year, but I’d like to think we could still try to offer something to them that’s educational, culturally relevant and entertaining at the same time.” Tinnon never goes away during the summer months herself since that is when resort-town entertainers make most of their money. It was when she used to do a jazz gig at the former Top of the Trop that she was inspired to write and produce A Night at the Speakeasy, as she began delving, more out of curiosity than anything, into the history of some of the jazz numbers she was covering and the artists who originally performed them. “I tweaked it this time around — I added
a couple of things and changed a couple of songs,” she says. “The arrangements are a little tighter, which I’m pretty excited about. There’s dialogue that goes along with every song, usually in the beginning but sometimes in the middle. The songs progress in chronological order through the ’20s and I’ll talk about what was going on at the time as far as the architecture, gangsters, crime and the St. Valentine’s Day massacre, women voting for the first time in the national election, the Great Depression. But the whole thing that ties everything together is Prohibition. “[The dialogue] helps the audience establish a relationship between some of the people who wrote many of the songs they’re likely familiar with, but maybe not always with the artists themselves,” she adds. “[The format] works especially well in a small, intimate theater like Dante Hall, which is my favorite kind of venue to play. It’s just big enough [seating about 240] where you
can get a nice-sized audience and also get that buzz, that vibe that’s such a part of the room.” And once again, Tinnon has surrounded herself with a quartet of musicians who are not only among the best the Atlantic City area has to offer, but anywhere. Their collective pedigrees, based on formal training and those they have toured with or backed up in recording studios, reads like a who’s who among musical legends of modern times. They include Andy Lalasis on upright bass, Jeff Turner on piano, Harry Himles on drums, and John Guida on tenor sax, clarinet and flute. “They are all sensational,” says Tinnon. “We do a four-song Duke Ellington tribute and those guys are just cooking [on the first three], and I’ll come in and join them on the fourth.” The production includes three costume changes. Among the period-appropriate dresses Tinnon wears is one she traveled up to a New York City vintage shop to purchase. An aficionado of antiques, Tinnon adorned the stage set with some of her own memorabilia, including an authentic [although not functional] 1920s radio. “I love antiques. When I was moving out on my own my mom would always find things and say ‘oh look what I found for you to put in your music room.’ I have an upright piano my father purchased — an old player piano from the 1920s that someone had gutted and shellacked — it was awful. When I moved up here and started getting steady work I had it refurbished, and now it looks like it just came out of the factory.” Among the genres of music A Night at the Speakeasy embodies are country (catapulted into popularity in the mid-1920s by the Grand Ole Opry radio broadcast, which originates from Tinnon’s home town of Nashville, Tennessee) and gospel, also made widely popular by radio in the 1920s. “In the country section I wanted to touch more on the recording industry and bringing country music to the airways, and the Carter Family was synonymous with that,” says Tinnon. “So this time we decided to do ‘Circle Be Unbroken,’ which is actually a song that I grew up singing and know like the back of my hand.” The final song is a gospel number for which Tinnon enlisted the help of high school children from the Charter Tech School for the Performing Arts in Somers Point. “It’s a number that is designed to lift people’s spirits after the Great Depression,” says Tinnon, “and one that sort of captures the essence of our coming together as a nation by trusting in one another, and leaning on our faith.” ■ see more online @

uring a recent chat with former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, I asked the inevitable reunion question. “I’ll be more than happy to reunite the Smiths as long as it’s all-instrumental and Morrissey plays the cello,” Marr quipped. Someone hit the rim shot. During a rare chat with Morrissey at South By Southwest seven years ago, the Moz fielded questions, many of which were about the Smiths. Morrissey noted that the Smiths were offered $5 million to appear at Coachella. He turned it down since money wasn’t an issue.

Since Morrissey and Marr don’t blow big sums of cash like Allen Iverson, it’s about more important factors than filthy lucre. A Smiths reunion is as unlikely as a Beatles reformation sans John Lennon and George Harrison. It just won’t happen, which is why fans must settle for solo tours. Morrissey, who will perform Saturday, Jan. 12, at the House of Blues in Atlantic City, doesn’t go on many jaunts. During a 2012 interview, he claimed he may retire this year. But it’s difficult to put much stock into that considering how many times Cher (and other performers) said she was on her
swan song jaunt. Saturday night’s show will be a chance to experience perhaps the most amusing vocalist in rock history. The Smiths’ and Morrissey’s solo material are filled with considerable wit and dark cynicism. You can always tell a Morrissey song within a few months, just like a Prince tune is instantly identifiable. Morrissey’s fingerprints are all over tunes, which are often twisted, unpredictable and black as the night. It’s been three years since Morrissey’s last recorded offering, Years of Refusal. But Morrissey doesn’t have to tour behind anything anymore. His cult fan base in America is more fanatical than his United Kingdom followers. Part of why Morrissey has never faded away is due to his strong solo albums. Many Smiths fans thought that all was lost when Marr left the band in 1987 and Morrissey followed by pursuing a solo career. Who was going to come up with those brilliant guitar lines? Well, Morrissey found a number of sonic partners and has enjoyed a successful solo career, which is over a quarter-century old, which trumps the Smiths seven-year run. The gorgeous “Everyday Is Like Sunday,” the oft-misunderstood “Suedehead,” the potent “You’re Going To Need Somebody on Your Side,” the relentlessly catchy “National Front Disco,” the hilarious “We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful” and the poppy “Boy Racer” are just some of Morrissey’s solo tracks that fans cling to like an old blanket. It’s not just about the Smiths, who are arguably the greatest band of the 1980s, with apologies to Sonic Youth, The Replacements, R.E.M., Metallica and Husker Du. It’s Morrissey by his lonesome when he plays Atlantic City. But there will be a number of Smith’s tracks. The band can’t be ignored even though that was the case, to an extent, when it existed, at least in America. I recall experiencing the Smiths during its “Queen Is Dead” tour in 1985 at the Tower Theater and there were plenty of empty seats. Morrissey, performing with a faux hearing aid, was thrilled collecting endless gladiolas. He was a young, brilliant, original frontman. Unfortunately, most of America didn’t get the Smiths, save those on the West Coast,
who adored the band, as well as British peers the Cure and Depeche Mode, who played stadiums in Southern California and theaters in Philadelphia. Even the American music press didn’t get it. I remember being floored reading then Philadelphia Inquirer music critic Ken Tucker’s review of Strangeways, Here We Come, the final Smiths album, which dropped in 1987. Tucker gave the album two stars (which signified fair), which was the most he ever gave a Smiths album. He noted that the band didn’t deserve a footnote in rock history. Somehow Tucker completely missed it and it can be argued that music criticism is objective, not subjective, if someone can miss the brilliance of the Smiths. But then again scribes panned Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath during those two seminal band’s early days. It’s hard to believe but it’s true. Expect a couple of Smiths songs to be sprinkled into the set. Morrissey is wise enough not to ignore those classics, as he did during early solo tours. Even if Morrissey doesn’t hang it up at 52 years of age after this tour ends, who knows when the amusing bard will come back? Morrissey operates on his own schedule. He’s unique. He’s mysterious and shockingly he’s a Los Angeleno. He’s smart enough to rarely do interviews since there has always been a great deal of mystique around Morrissey. Who else can you say that about in the world of music, which is all about endless exposure? We know too much about Kanye West, Jay-Z and Justin Beiber. Morrissey is clever enough to know that less is more. Even his shows typically clock in at no more than 90 minutes. Keep the fans wanting more. But the fans want Morrissey, particularly after he postponed this date, which was originally slated for last month but was pushed back due to his mother’s health issues. This Morrissey show is the event of the month. Hopefully there will be plenty more tours from him. Viva Morrissey. ■
