The Last Holiday
COMMANDO KRAV MAGA
When the late Gil Scott-Heron set out to write another book in the 1990s, he didn’t intend to write a memoir, especially one that would be published posthumously. But with the legendary singer-songwriter, poet, performer, activist and musician’s death last year, the hundreds of pages, scribbled notes, and other thoughts he was compiling and putting in order and feverishly revising and revising some more for his publishing company during the last years of his life, were finally edited into a book, which was just published by Canongate Books of the U.K. (the U.S. publisher is Grove Press) in time for this weekend’s celebration of Martin Luther King’s birthday. You see, originally, Scott-Heron had wanted to document the Hotter Than july tour that he was a part of, opening up for Stevie Wonder in 1980 and 1981, right around the time Wonder held a rally in Washington DC calling for King’s birthday to be celebrated with a national holiday. In 1986, legislation was finally passed making King’s birthday a holiday. And that’s where Scott-Heron’s book, The Last Holiday, ends pretty much. Although he left out big chunks of life, including his later years when he came back with two solid albums (Spirits, I’m New Here), while dealing with drug and probation violation troubles, and finding out he was HIV positive, the memoir is full of Scott-Heron’s wit, profound observations, humor, love, and takes the reader behind the scenes of Stevie Wonder’s campaign for King, as well as many items in Scott-Heron’s personal life. If you ever heard Scott-Heron talk, you can hear that very voice pouring out of the pages of this book, which also includes some unreleased poems. A celebration of King’s life this holiday weekend can only be enhanced by reading this book. (Listen to the late Gil Scott-Heron read a chapter from the book at acweekly.com) — Jeff Schwachter

It’s one of the more unique religious traditions played out in various churches around the country where The Word becomes the music in a jazz Vespers concert. The idea took hold in new York more than 40 years ago when Rev. John Gensel devised a late evening service to accommodate the many musicians in his area who didn’t exactly work nine to five. The musicians were invited to “perform” the service though music. Southern New Jersey offers up two jazz vespers programs, the Cape May jazz Vespers at the First Presbyterian Church of Cape May (capemayjazzvespers.com) and the Jersey Shore jazz Vespers at the asbury united Methodist Church in Atlantic City. The jersey Shore Vespers (third Sunday of every month) were reinstated in June and continue a long-standing tradition of Jazz Vespers at the Ventnor united Methodist Church. “We’re thrilled to be continuing this and we’ve honored [retired pastor] Clancy Wilson who kept this going for so long in Ventnor,” says Sandy Warren, a member of the Vespers board. “There is very little talking in a jazz Vespers service. The music becomes the sermon and the tradition has always been to open it up to all musicians, regardless of their religious affiliation and also to open the service to anyone who wants to attend.” On Sunday, Jan. 15, the vespers service will feature local favorite Keith Hollis (pictured) and band in a tribute to jazz great Art Blakely. Warren, a long time Atlantic City and Ocean City writer, lived with Blakely in Northfield before his passing. “Actually, this wasn’t my idea at all,” she says. “Keith is a local favorite, of course, and other members of the board asked him if he wanted to do a tribute.” Along with Hollis, local singer Angela Burton will perform and Blakely memorabilia will be on hand. The performance is at 4pm and is free, though an offering is requested. Visit jazzvespers.com. — Mike Pritchard
‘When You Come Home’ Pete Donnelly
For the past 20-plus years South Jersey resident and Philly music scene regular Pete Donnelly has been working as a musician, producer, touring bass player and, now, a solo act. A member of NRBQ since 2009, and having worked with Soul Asylum, Tommy Stinson (Replacements, GNR), Graham Parker and his band The Figgs — which will release its 11th studio album in 2012 — as well as numerous others, Donnelly has lived a prolific creative life that has taken him around the world. All of this informs his first solo CD, released last month, entitled When You Come Home. The 14-track album of rock songs with an edge of experimentation represents a life dedicated to music, a life dedicated to friendships and the long journey we all take to find our home in this ever-cluttered world. The music is extraordinary, with sensational guest appearances, the songwriting is mature and the songs stick with you like glue. Donnelly kicks off a six-week Wednesday night residency at MilkBoy in Philadelphia Jan. 25 with special guests. Find out more at PeteDonnellyMusic.com. —Jeff Schwachter

t first glance, there’s nothing really unique about what Brandon Tomasello is doing as he tries to make his way and find his place in the world of modern music. in what’s becoming an increasingly common way of doing things, tomasello is a singer whose musical support comes from a DJ spinning tracks in a booth, not from a traditional band. But those tracks aren’t the pulsing, pounding, repetitive and bass-heavy sounds favored by today’s artists. instead, the music pouring from the speakers is a sound that’s rapidly becoming an endangered species. Backed by the big-band tracks of a 40-piece orchestra, tomasello, who’s all of 19, is singing the songs of Frank Sinatra. What’s more, he’s channeling the music of ol’ Blue eyes on the same atlantic city casino stage where sinatra performed more than 30 years ago. Barely six months after working his first solo gig at a church in Brigantine, tomasello is currently headlining his own show, Swing, Sing Sinatra, in the superstar theatre at resorts casino hotel. the show will be presented on select dates through feb. 16. “it was amazing just being able to walk up there and know that sinatra stood right there in the middle of that stage,” the young Philadelphian says. the way tomasello landed the gig is equally amazing. he was first exposed to sinatra’s music when he was eight and spent time at his grandmother’s home in south Philadelphia, where community rules decree that every house must contain a shrine to the chairman of the Board. tomasello was instantly smitten by sinatra’s voice, his style, the cooler-than-cool musical swagger that wafted from the speakers. he was so captivated by the music that he stole his grandmother’s collection of sinatra cDs and played them over and over and over, committing the songs and the lyrical phrasing to memory. “When you hear the same song 40 times in a row, you kind of remember them,” he says. “i listened to them so much that i knew where he took his breaths [during the songs] and remembered how he sang them.” as he grew older, tomasello enrolled in a performing arts charter school in Philadelphia, where he hooked up with a fellow student, Stephen Garbesi, who was also into music and recording from the technical side. tomasello also joined the Philadelphia Boys choir and performed around Philadelphia, including at the Kimmel center. But he still wasn’t thinking of making music his career. he initially wanted to become a fighter pilot, until he landed a part-time job working in a funeral home.

“and then i wanted to become a funeral director,” he says. garbesi, who was in the process of setting up a small recording studio and knew tomasello could sing, told his friend he was crazy. one day, garbesi asked his buddy to step into the recording booth and sing a song so he could hear how the equipment sounded. “i sang ‘fly Me to the Moon,’ and as soon as i finished, [garbesi] said ‘oK, that’s it, you’re making an album,’” he recalls. the album was titled It’s My Time, and it eventually caught the attention of area publicist Neil Cirucci, who hooked tomasello up with manager Joe Donofrio of Brigantine. Donofrio wrangled a showcase for tomasello at a Brigantine church last July. several weeks later, he got the teenager what was supposed to be a limited-run gig in the Whiskey Bar at resorts, where he wowed casino president Dennis Gomes. the lounge gig was extended, and gomes decided to start the new year off by moving tomasello from the intimate 50-seat lounge into the casino’s 1,600-seat showroom. With garbesi spinning sinatra’s musical tracks behind him, tomasello made his casino showroom debut Jan. 4. he even gets to use the dressing room where sinatra once prepped for his shows, and on his first night in the big room, he got to stay in the hotel suite where sinatra slept during his resorts gigs between 1979 and 1982. tomasello acknowledges his show as “mostly” a tribute to his musical idol. “there’s a couple of songs in there that aren’t [sinatra], just to switch it up a little bit,” he says. “i guess the best way to describe it is [that it’s] the same way Michael Bublé is doing it. he’s doing sinatra, but he’s also doing other songs, kind of in a big-band way. so i’m not going to limit myself.” While he likes the comfort level of having his friend backing him up as the DJ, tomasello is also in the process of putting together a band. But even if the band replaces “DJ Beezy,” the two young men will continue to work together. two years ago, they formed fiMa Productions, an entertainment company specializing in music, film, photography and Web design. n

ew Jersey’s move to allow intra-state online gambling, which is usually dominated by online poker, is still on track. It’s just not on the fast track. last week, state sen. raymond lesniak, D-Union, who has been the main proponent of the idea, said he hoped to move a bill quickly through the legislature last week and have it on N.J. Gov. Chris Christie’s desk by monday (Jan. 9). the move came after the U.s. Justice Department ruled that state plans to allow Internet gambling would not violate a federal ban of online gaming. But then Christie broke his silence on the issue. and while saying he supported the idea, he wanted to make sure that what is ultimately passed in the state will stand up legally. “we’re working hard with senator lesniak to try to get it right,” Christie is reported to have said. “Here’s my view on it. I think New Jersey should be in that business. I think we should be an epicenter for that business, but I want to do it right. I do not want to rush and get legislation that either doesn’t pass state constitutional muster or creates other problems for us.” Christie also said he wanted any online gaming to be centered in atlantic City. the governor vetoed a bill to allow online gaming last year because he was worried that it would allow Internet gambling parlors to operate throughout the state. there has also been speculation that a voter referendum on the idea would be needed to allow the online betting under the state constitution. state voters approved a measure to allow sports betting in New Jersey casinos last November, provided a federal ban is lifted. online gaming, however, is a different issue and some polls have showed that voters may not support the idea. officials have said they plan to reintroduce an online gaming bill in the legislature, which started a new session this week. stay tuned. In the meantime, there’s plenty of live poker action in atlantic City as the Borgata prepares to launch the Borgata winter Poker open on wednesday, Jan. 18. the casino’s winter open has proven to be its second most popular event behind the Borgata open in september and usually brings out a nice mix of regional and local pros as well as amateurs (who quite often Like us:

get hot and take some of the top paydays). the open starts with a $500,000 guaranteed, $500 + $60 No limit tournament. last year’s opener came close to drawing 1,500 players. the open also highlights the casino’s popular bounty tournaments. the Borgata bounties operate differently than the traditional bounty. Under the Borgata’s system, each player buys a cash casino chip along with the buy-in and tournament fee. that chip is placed in front of their stacks. If a player is sent to the rail, the player that bumped him out pockets the chips. there are six bounty tournaments scheduled among the tournament’s 28 main events. six are $100 Black Chip bounty tournaments, but there is also a $500 (Purple Chip Bounty) event on Jan. 27. the two day event is one of the highest buy-ins of the tournament schedule at $1,500 + $150 + $500. the casino has also announced its secondary tournaments, most played in the evenings, and they include nine more bounty tournaments. the championship event of the tournament starts Jan. 29. It’s a $2 million guaranteed prize pool, No limit Hold’em, Deep stack Double Play (re-entry) tournaments. the buy-in is $3,300 + $200. satellites for the championship event start tuesday, Jan. 24 with a $175 +$25 No limit tournament. one in 20 players will win a seat to the championship (100 players, 10 seats and so on). From Friday, Jan. 27 to sunday, Jan. 29, seven other satellites are scheduled, including a $700 + $50 tournament on Jan. 29 that will seat one out of every five players in the championship. satellite winners on Jan. 29 will likely attend the second opening day of the championship on Jan. 30. remember, the championship is a Double Play. anyone busting out on Day 1a (Jan. 29) can re-buy on Jan. 30. of course, if you’re re-buying a $3,500 tournament, well, good luck to you. last year’s championship winner was Brooklyn’s vadim shlez, who took home the $533,210 first prize. the event attracted 718 players. some pros that turned out for the 2011 winter open included Gavin smith, vanessa selbst and steve Dannenmann, but amateurs had a solid showing across all events. n

In case you were wondering, that unique moniker derives from a native american Indian word meaning “dig deep.” Geoduck are also among the earth’s longest-living organisms. a record specimen was documented to survive for 168 years. Eggs, eggs and more eggs — sure, the a.C. area has plenty of places for the morning standards, be they scrambled, overs or poached — but I’m looking for something, well, different. like maybe shirred, a french/British variant where ovum are
combined with cream, fresh herbs and sometimes a little cheese. also called oeufs en cocotte these elements are then slowly baked in a low-heat oven (350 or so degrees) inside buttered ramekins. after 10 to 12 minutes, you’ll be left with a luscious, indulgent bowl of custardy goodness. We could see these moving well at an upscale morning joint, like Margate’s Hannah G’s or the Chelsea hotel’s mainstay Teplitzky’s in Atlantic City. We have also been pleased to see the return of the deviled egg to more than a few upscale menus of late. eggs are such an essential part of any chef’s culinary repertoire that the creases in a toque (those tall white paper hats loathed by cooks everywhere) were originally intended to quantify the number of egg styles someone had mastered.
Funky fish/sustainable seafood — these days, virtually every bill of fare you encounter will include tuna, salmon, tilapia and another species of fish, like red snapper or mahi. What we want to see more of is the less familiar stuff, like wahoo, various bass (not Chilean sea bass a.k.a. “patagonian toothfish,” please!) skate, opah and local stuff like day-boat scallops. Margate’s remarkable seasonal entry Fisch Kitchen, attached like a remora to a shark alongside mothership business Downbeach Deli, went even further with the concept this summer. In their initial season the daring little venture plated items like black cod, ling and lemonfish (cobia, one of the most promising species in aquaculture). and while we’re at it, we’d all better get used to eating tuna other than bluefin, which is fast becoming desperately endangered just off our own shores. also, wishes for a continued warm winter and speedy completion of the spectacular Revel casino project. Beyond being vital for atlantic City’s economic growth and recovery, revel will be bringing two “Iron Chefs” to the shore, philadelphia restauranteur Jose Garces and Marc forgione of new york City. We can hardly wait. We close this column with a bit of sadness. Margate’s fine ByoB Manna is apparently no more. according to postings on its Web site from chef/owner John Merlino: “We are not sure when and where we will reopen. as you all know the building we are currently in has been up for sale. We have been looking for a new home without success.” they will be missed. n

resented for your approval, our annual wish list for the atlantic City regional dining scene. Wild boar — you seemingly can’t throw a rock at a tv today without hitting a show dedicated to the terrors being foisted on the american south and Midwest by hoards of feral boar. released into the wild here centuries ago, these eurasian natives have little in the way of natural enemies, and scavenge farmlands like giant plantdevouring locusts. Worse yet, these omnivores exhibit a great deal of aggression toward humans, and will attack, kill and devour many other forest dwellers as well. But I’m a glass-half-full kinda guy. you say “ecological disaster” and I reply with “dining opportunity.” It just so happens that wild boar tastes absolutely delicious. I’ve even heard enthusiasts of the meat describe its taste by saying that you will never eat pork again once you’ve sampled wild boar. a few places around town have tried out boar, primarily in the form of sausages, in the past. We say, how about a nice, wintertime boar ragu over pasta or polenta? Maybe someplace like atlantic City’s upscale northern Italian outpost, Girasole? Geoduck — these pacific northwest natives are the world’s largest burrowing clams, often extending more than six inches in length beyond their shells. their overall appearance is rather r-rated, which may account for a general lack of interest about them in the past. they are also reputed to have a delicate, complex savory flavor profile that we have sadly not yet had a chance to sample. A show boasting Rakim, EPMD, Slick Rick, Doug E. Fresh and other legends of hip-hop’s golden era comes to Boardwalk Hall Sunday, Jan. 15. By Jeff Schwachter
M
EPMD put an album out in 2008 [We Mean Business], about 20 years after the first album. Was there a period in between there when you and Erik didn’t want to work together as EPMD? PS: Well, during the breakup, between 1992 and 1997, there was like a five-year gap. And then we came back in ’97 with Back in Business. But in that gap, you know, I got to learn a lot about life, catch up with stuff that you missed, because being out there with the first four albums, with Run DMC, Jazzy Jazz and the Fresh Prince, Public Enemy ... we were like on the road nine months out of the year, so we missed a lot of personal time. But you know, same story. So, we got to catch that little break and then get up and see the reality and see the value in terms of what we mean to hip-hop and the importance for us to actually continue to move forward because so many artists learned from us. We’re like the most sampled rap group in history.
Does EPMD ever see any money from all the samples of its music in other artists’ songs? PS: Well, that depends on how the artist works with us. You know, because with a huge catalog like ours — we’ve been doing music for like three decades now — some of the music is owned by different people, but the majority is owned by us. So, this year [in 2011] what I actually did was take our first five albums in our catalog and put it with one publishing company to reactivate it.

ore and more frequently, over the past five years or so, promoters will put together a show, or even a tour, featuring the elder statesmen and women of hip-hop. It’s a way to bring old-school hip-hop artists back to the stage to do their thing, while fans get to relive special lifetime moments tucked inside their memory banks, moments that are forever attached to a song or a beat or a chorus sample hook. Under the spotlight, and in front of several generations of fans — some of whom may remember with vivid detail exactly where they were and what they were wearing when they ripped off the cellophane of their new Eric B. & Rakim Paid in Full cassette; others, mainly younger, who can only imagine what it was like living in the “golden age” of hip-hop during the mid-to-late 1980s and early ’90s, when artists such as Doug E. Fresh, Whodini, Slick Rick, Run DMC, Public Enemy, De La Soul, Biz Markie, MC Lyte, Big Daddy Kane and a host of other seminal rhyme makers, DJs and beat-boxers ruled the hiphop hierarchy, releasing (entire!) albums via these antiquated things called record labels — these 40-something hip-hop legends get a chance to reunite with their peers, say hello to old friends, and, as a unit, give a face to the music that was rooted in their collective childhoods. Over the past few years, several of these shows have passed through Atlantic City as well as other cities across the globe. This year, Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall hosts a holiday weekend show dubbed The All-Stars of Hip-Hop slated for Sunday, Jan. 15 (Martin Luther King’s birthday), featuring Rakim, Slick Rick, EPMD, Kid n’ Play, Doug E. Fresh, Big Daddy Kane, Whodini and Rob Base. This writer, who had the delight of growing up during hip-hop’s golden era, had the opportunity to speak with two of the show’s performers — Parrish Smith, half of EPMD with Erik Sermon (who, at 42, suffered a mild heart attack late last year just days after rapper Heavy D died of health-related causes), and who says to watch out for a new solo album in addition to a new EPMD album in 2012, and Slick Rick. Below are brief excerpts from the interviews. Read full interviews with both online at acweekly.com.

Not Hard Getting This Insomniac Up
Dave Attell on his Showtime hit ‘Dave’s Old Porn,’ and why guys should bring their girlfriends to the Borgata for the Anti-Social Network Tour this weekend. By Ed Condran

ometimes a television show drops into your lap. That’s the way it was for Dave Attell, the veteran comic who hosts Dave’s Old Porn on Showtime, which debuted in October. Attell actually uses footage from old VHS tapes that he has lugged from apartment to apartment in Manhattan. “I’ve had my stash in a duffel bag,” Attell tells Atlantic City Weekly. ”I would grab that bag and tell the mover, ‘This is really heavy, I got it.’” What Attell, who will appear at the Anti-Social Network show Saturday and Sunday (Jan. 14 & 15) at the Borgata with Jim Norton, Artie Lange and Doug Stanhope, has is a cult hit on cable TV.

“It’s great doing stand-up and I love doing my show on Showtime. It’s a learning experience for many. I try to help people. I’m like Dr. Oz. I have people on like [porn star] Nina Hartley, who was nice enough to give techniques on how to deep throat. People watching learned that Seka is not from Sweden. Everybody thought that their favorite porn star was Swedish, but she is from America and is a fascinating person! Jim Norton met her and told me that she is a totally classy broad. So when you tune into this show, it’s not just fun, it’s educational. How many shows can you say that about today? What reality show is educational?” Attell admits that he is awe of some of the old-school porn guys.
‘When you tune into this show, it’s not just fun, it’s educational. How many shows can you say that about today? What reality show is educational?’
“Men like Peter North, Eric Edwards and Ron Jeremy could just pop one, no problem,” Attell says. “That was way before there was Viagra and erec-

You can’t help “We [Attell and guest comics on the TV show] just have fun talking over [the old porn footage],” Attell says. “It’s something different and we have a lot of laughs. I don’t think you can take those old porn films too seriously. I have people like [Jim] Norton, Chelsea Handler and Whitney Cummings on and we just riff about what we see. It’s

You can’t smoke anywhere. I was in Indianapolis and I understand that you’re not allowed to smoke in the interesting because of what we say and Indianapolis airport, but they wouldn’t also what you see. If you want to smoke, drink or gamble, Atlantic City is the place to go. You get great crowds there. You play shows there, you get people from Philly, New York, all parts of New Jersey. The people are into it when you do shows in Atlantic City. I have no problem going down there, particularly since it’s an easy run from New York. You’re there in no time and you have a good time.” Attell’s life is a good time. Most guys would trade places with a man going from town to town cracking wise and on the set of a show, in which the gig is watching and talking over porn flicks. “It’s a lot of work, but I can’t complain about what I do,” Attell says.

Sure the material Attell, Norton, Lange and Stanhope deliver is male oriented, but women can find humor in their material. Attell in particular has a viewpoint and punchlines that should connect with most. “I think there’s something for everyone in what I do,” Attell says. “I look
