BO has announced that the fall 2014 season of its original series Boardwalk Empire will be the awardwinning show’s last. The show’s official Twitter feed sent out a tweet last Thursday: “The final call for drinks on the Boardwalk comes this fall” and the Hollywood Reporter confirmed soon after that the fifth season of Boardwalk Empire will be the end of what the show’s creator Terry Winter calls “a great run.” HBO programming president Michael Lombardo added: “It has been an incredible honor to bring this powerful and groundbreaking series to our subscribers. Terry Winter has created one for the ages.” Winter tells the Reporter: “We’re thrilled to get the go-ahead for a fifth season of Boardwalk Empire. [A] fter much discussion with my creative team and HBO, we’ve decided to wrap up the series after such a great run and look forward to bringing it to a powerful and exciting conclusion.” The prohibition-era series that stars Steve Buscemi as Enoch “Nucky” Thompson, has won numerous awards, including two Golden Globes and more than 12 Emmys. Martin Scorsese directed the pilot episode of the show, which debuted in 2010. Oscar buzz is swirling around Winter for his screenplay to the Scorsese film The Wolf of Wall Street, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio and has already garnered Winter several nominations — and a couple wins — for his screenplay from various awards groups around the country.

f you’ve listened to Temple University’s WRTI (90.1 FM) radio station after 6pm — and back in the day, for many more hours, prior to the station’s split between jazz and classical programming — you’re probably very familiar with the distinct voice of Bob Perkins — or “BP with the GM” as his trademark tag line goes (“Bob Perkins with the Good Music”). The Philadelphia jazz radio legend, who can be heard live on the air 6-9pm MondaysThursdays and Sundays from 10am-2pm, celebrates 50 years in radio broadcasting in 2014 and the Somers Point Jazz Society is honoring Perkins, who also turns 80 this year, by sponsoring a salute on Sunday, Jan. 26, at Clancy’s By the Bay in Somers Point from 1-4pm. The Tom Angello Quartet will perform, there will be a complimentary buffet, cash bar and and the event is free and open to the public. Perkins has helped promote SPJS events in the past and is the recipient of the society’s 2012 Jazz Master Award.

n event held Thursday afternoon, Jan. 9, at Steve & Cookie’s in Margate featured a tribute to the renowned Red Klotz and a book signing by author Tim Kelly, who recently released his biography called The Legend of Red Klotz: How Basketball’s Loss Leader Won Over the World — 14,000 Times. The gathering was also attended by three-time NBA champion and area resident Chris Ford (who, like Klotz, played his college ball at Villanova University) and other local luminaries. Now 92, Klotz and his wife Gloria have been Margate residents for over 50 years and met on the Margate beach near their home nearly 75 years ago. Klotz was a star player for every team he competed for from high school through the professional ranks (at 5-foot-7, he is still recognized as the shortest player ever to win an NBA title, for the Baltimore Bullets in 1948), but is best known as the owner and former player/ coach of the Washington Generals, the team that has lost to the Harlem Globetrotters over 14,000 times (with their only win coming in 1971, decided by a last-second two-handed set shot by Klotz — a shot that helped revolutionize the game and earn him a basketball scholarship to Villanova. “Although he has so often lost to the Globetrotters, in life and in every other aspect of his legendary basketball career he was a winner, helping to introduce the game in 116 countries and advance the popularity of basketball as a goodwill ambassador of the sport and his country,” says Kelly. “I hope people will enjoy reading Red’s story as much as Red and I enjoyed collaborating on it.” The book is available on amazon.com or at comteqpublishing.com.

T

un Tavern brewmaster Tim Kelly shared with the Beer Buzz what Atlantic City’s only brewpub/restaurant has on tap this winter, and what beers are in the works for the near future. The Tun typically has five staples on tap at any one time — Tun Light, Irish Red, India Pale Ale (its three best sellers), Devil Dog Pale Ale and Leatherneck Stout — and up to three other seasonal beers as well. “As of mid-January there is a Belgain Strong — a dark 9.2 percent abv [alcohol by volume] beer with spicy flavor characteristics from the Belgian yeast strain,” says Kelly, “and a Berlinerweiss, which is a light wheat beer fermented with lactobascillus — a bacteria used in the production of yogurt and saurkraut, and is also responsible for milk spoilage. “[The Berlinerweiss] is highly acidic, which

we taste as sour, and a bit funky. Personally I like a bigger beer during the deep dark of winter — something with deep flavor, color and body. It doesn’t have to be high in alcohol, but it helps. “I plan to brew a Wee Heavy and a Dunkelweiss [dark wheat] for the early spring, and possibly a Belgian Tripple for the late spring. Come the summer it’s Hefeweiss [German wheat beer].” Kelly, whose intro to brewing dates back to his days as a grad student at the University of Vermont, says he enjoys working on new combinations for craft brews. “As often as I am able [but] it gets tougher each year to come up with something new. Typically I like to see what I can forage locally and incorporate into a beer. In the past I have used spruce boughs, black walnuts, sassafras, and yarrow [an herb] from my yard [in Marlton] and nearby woods. Also a friend of mine grows hops that I use for a fall Harvest IPA. I have been thinking about what I could possibly do with acorns for the fall, as they are so prolific. When making such a beer I do not make a test batch, I just go for it!” Kelly tries always to use local ingredients for the beers he brews, but says that typically the Northeast is not the most ideal region for producing the hops crucial for the highestquality beer. That, he says, would be the Pacific Northwest. “One can’t do much better than fresh and

local,” he says. “However, one drawback is that there is no analysis of the hops for essential oil — i.e. alpha-acid and cohumulone content. It can be accomplished with good results [but] this latitude is not ideal for growing hops.” *** Last week came the announced return date of the Miss America Pageant. This week it is the heralded return of another esteemed Atlantic City event — the A.C. Beer & Music Festival. The ninth annual “Celebration of the Suds” will again see three sessions over two days — Friday and Saturday, April 4-5 — at the A.C. Convention Center. Session One will be 7-11pm Friday, Session Two noon4pm Saturday, and Session Three 6-10pm Saturday. Guests can sample wares from over 150 different breweries nationwide. There will also be seminars and demonstrations, off-the-wall activities, and unique beer-related goods and apparel. Musical guests include the bands Saves The Day, Dirty Heads, and Less Than Jake. Tickets are $55 in advance and $60 at the door, if available. There is also a $15 designated driver ticket available at the door. Get tickets at Joe Canal’s on Fire Road in Northfield or on the Black Horse Pike in EHT, or through Ticketmaster. All attendees must be at least age 21. Visit acbeerfest.com for more.

*** South Jersey’s newest craft brewery, the Glasstown Brewing Company in the Millville Airport, will have its grand opening/ribbon cutting ceremony on Saturday, Jan. 18, at 12:30pm. Glasstown Brewing is Millville’s first production brewery. It was founded by Millville resident and former home brewer Paul Simmons, who plans to use only locally grown ingredients and manufactured products for the beers he brews, including bottles manufactured at Gerresheimer Glass (with locations in Vineland and Millville). Sited in a 2,800-square-foot former airport maintenance facility, the brewery plans to have visitor tours, a retail outlet, and a tasting room. It anticipates producing about 200 gallons of beer a week. *** The Tuckahoe Brewing Company in Dennisville, Cape May County, was established in Jan. 2011 by four friends and former home brewers. The company is having its second-year anniversary party at the Deauville Inn in Strathmere on Saturday, Jan. 25, from 8pm-midnight. The event will have Tuckahoe’s New Brighton Coffee Stout, Steelmantown Porter, Anglesea Irish Red Ale, and Dennis Creek Pale Ale on tap. There will be dinner specials and growler giveaways. ob Thomas isn’t looking to line his own pockets when he takes the stage for a rare three-night stand in Borgata’s Music Box this weekend (Jan. 17-19). Instead, for the third consecutive year, the Matchbox Twenty front man’s three solo shows will help fund the Sidewalk Angels Foundation. The non-profit charity, created a decade ago by his wife, Marisol Maldonado, primarily supports no-kill animal shelters and other grass roots organizations around the country. “She [formed] it because we run into all these really great organizations ... that don’t have the benefit of thousands of marketing dollars,” Thomas, 41, told the Web site ivillage. com. “We use our influence and the people we know to put on different benefits and draw awareness for these smaller organizations.” The Borgata gig isn’t a one-and-done fundraiser for Sidewalk Angels. Many of his solo shows raise money for the cause, and Thomas is so committed to Sidewalk Angels that even before the foundation was created, he found a way to endow the organization with the gift of music that keeps on giving. In 2002, he wrote, recorded and released a holiday song titled “A New York Christmas.” Proceeds from the sale of the single benefitted Blythedale Children’s Hospital in Valhalla, N.Y. The following year, he re-released the song and funneled the money to Pets Alive, a no-kill animal shelter in upstate New York. Ever since Sidewalk Angels was created, the organization benefits from the song every holiday season. “I set it up so that all the proceeds — not just from the sales, but also from the publishing — go to the foundation any time it gets played,” said Thomas, whose singing and songwriting have helped Matchbox Twenty sell more than 25 million albums. Away from the group, he earned three Grammy Awards for one song — his collaboration with Santana on the 1999 hit single “Smooth” from the latter’s Supernatural album. A prolific composer, he’s also contributed songs to a broad array of contemporary, rock and country artists ranging from Willie Nelson (“Maria - Shut Up and Kiss Me”) and Mick Jagger (“Disease”) to Travis Tritt (“What If Love Hangs On”) and Marc Anthony (“The Tragedy”). In 2004, when he was just 31, the Songwriters Hall of Fame named Thomas the winner of its first Starlight Award, which recognized young

songwriters who have already had a lasting influence in the music industry. Thomas didn’t always lead charmed life, though. He had to first work through a difficult childhood before things began breaking his way. He was born at an American military base in West Germany and, after his father left the family, spent the better part of his youth shutting between his mother’s home in Florida and his grandmother’s home in South Carolina. He dropped out of high school at 17 and became a drifter, hitchhiking throughout the southeast and crashing wherever he could. There was, however, one constant in his life, and that was music. The soundtrack of his confused teenage years was an eclectic one, ranging from the soul music of Al Green to the multiple genres of Elvis Costello to the songs of Elton John. In 1995, after singing in a variety of bands and developing his songwriting style, Thomas, Brian Yale and Paul Doucette left the band Tabitha’s Secret, with whom they’d been working, and formed what was to become Matchbox Twenty. They landed a recording contract with Atlantic Records and in 1996 released their debut album, Yourself or Someone Like You, which sold 10 million units in the United States. It was nearly as successful overseas, where it charted multiplatinum. From the very start, Matchbox Twenty found its alternative rock music resonated with a generation. The band released a series of successful albums and singles for nearly a decade — with Thomas occasionally branching out to do solo and collaborative work away from the band — before the group went on hiatus in 2004. They returned with a slight lineup change in 2007 but took another break from working together the following year. Reuniting in 2010, the band toured and, in 2012, released its fourth studio album, North. It hadn’t lost its touch with contemporary music or its fan base, either. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. Thomas’s three solo shows at Borgata give him an opportunity to mix his solo work with his group efforts, but with a unique twist. “It’s a chance for me, as a songwriter, to really highlight lyric and melody and to create different versions of songs that I’ve been playing for years,” he said prior to a solo show two years ago. “We’ll be doing my solo stuff, Matchbox Twenty songs and covers. It will be a real Storytellers kind of vibe.” n

ads in addition to our tuna, four soups, quesadillas, wings, sandwiches, pasta and burgers, plus nine entrée-sized “big plates” all round out the bill of fare. Though not sampled, we plan a revisit late night for a monster hot dog called “the Kitchen Sink” — a foot-long frank loaded with fried egg, French fries, chili, coleslaw and cheddar cheese. Our only big plate of this night was another French-inspired creation, steak frites. Relish employs eight or so ounces of marvelous, juicy flatiron steak paired with the pile of pommes and adorned by a disc of herb butter. Sliced on a bias, the meat was as ordered — a beautiful, bloody Pittsburgh rare — savory and complex

stripes of yellowy mustard vinaigrette, providing just the right coup of French authenticity. Plenty of fresh crisp lettuce lay beneath, mixing nicely with ingredients as we dug down. Upon the urging of Relish’s culinary manager Brian Vandergast, an arugula and prosciutto pizza arrived next. Having inherited a fine Italian oven from Lugo, Relish prepares flat breads and pies within. This combine of tangy greens and Italy’s prized cut of pig worked well, all balanced atop a firm foundation of crust, the only true secret of great pizza making. Diners seeking variety will find an abundance to consider at Relish. Six sal-

with the intense, almost fruity essence of quality beef. Accompanied by a ramekin of luscious Hollandaise, this Parisian plating returned to the kitchen with not a trace of food remaining. From a lengthy array of desserts we opted for Black Forest cake and white chocolate bread pudding; the former dense with levels of chocolate, cream and tart cherries, the latter presented as a novel, cupcake-size portion. Returning the following morning, we couldn’t help but be impressed at how well the room transitions for breakfast service. Bright, lively and convivial, it’s like an amalgam of every cool retro hotel coffee shop. Servers were attentive and quick to welcome guests, and the kitchen delivers plates with admirable rapidity. Our bacon, onion and feta omelet demonstrated all the earmarks of well-traveled cook running the egg station. Prepared in a pan, rather than griddled, the half-moon result was solid, but not dry. Puffy and rotund like the previous night’s pierogies, it was loaded with plenty of smoky pork and onions — folded into the egg — and stuffed with a toss of crumbled Greek cheese. Riding shotgun were a most unusual preparation of breakfast potato cut into steakhouse wedges, fried dark golden and probably finished in a warm oven. The results were crisp and utterly delicious, seasoned just as expertly. Spuds like this are reason alone for a return trip to Relish. Twenty-four hours a day. ■

year and half after opening, Revel appears to have firmly established a house signature eatery to call its very own — Relish. In a locale replete with stunning ventures from star chefs, Relish is designed to accommodate an entirely different dining demographic: casual, diverse, upscale food in a 24-hour outlet. Space that was originally occupied by Lugo Italian features a deep, monochromatic interior that works beautifully for these purposes, mimicking the look and feel of a New York-style neighborhood diner. With multiple menus — breakfast, all day, overnight and dessert — Relish offers a pleasing number of options at some of A.C.’s most reasonable price points, like their pierogies, including five sturdy little bundles of potato and cheese for $8. Ladled with caramelized onions and striped by sour cream, these Eastern European delicacies were artful, hearty and substantial, while still remaining delicate enough to pierce with only a fork. Presented on a long, narrow plate, the quintet was properly pudgy, looking like well-crafted Asian dumplings. A wide, curving dish of orangey macand-cheese was large enough to easily serve two or more hungry patrons. Delivered steaming hot, the gooey elbow macaroni were simple, but very satisfying. And for only seven bucks, it’s an incredible value. Tuna salad, Relish’s take on classic salade Nicoise, brought an angled bowl studded with rows of halved cherry tomatoes, red skin potatoes, hardboiled egg, thin, tender haricots verts, and pitted black olives surrounding a central mound of fish. Layered throughout the dish were

10 fun facts about the man who brought us ‘The Twist’ and ‘Let’s Twist Again’ By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com

he noted, “I think what I do is a privilege. It’s a pleasure to go onstage and be able to do what I do. I don’t understand the magic of at all. I just know that it happens and it makes me feel so good.” In a 2008 interview he was asked about the enduring appeal of “The Twist.” Said Checker, “It’s like talking to Alexander Graham Bell about his invention. ‘The Twist’ is as new as today and as old as American Bandstand. Keep in mind the ‘The Twist’ was the first dance performance together with a song, the first song with dancing apart from the beat. Now you see that everywhere, but ‘The Twist’ was the first.”

Here is a list of fun facts about Chubby Checker. 1. Although he is known for his South Philadelphia roots, he was actually born October 3, 1941, in Spring Gulley, South Carolina. His parents moved to Philadelphia a bit later. 2. One of his pals at South Philadelphia High School and now a lifelong friend is Fabiano Forte, who also had some success in the music business just using his first name, Fabian. 3. Ernest worked at Fresh Farm Poultry at the Italian Market and it was his boss who nicknamed him Chubby.

lthough Ernest Evans, better known as singer Chubby Checker, is defined by creating a dance craze with the hits “The Twist” and “Let’s Twist Again” in the early 1960s, as well as “The Hucklebuck,” “Pony Time” “The Fly” and “Limbo Rock,” his skills as a singer exceed that limited role. Much like actors defined by an early, game-changing role — can do you really look at Leonard Nimoy without seeing the Spock ears? — Checker did lament that his early success put him in musical handcuffs as a dance music specialist. However, as they years passed he embraced his place in music history. In an interview with Dennis Hunt in 1985,

4. Later the owner of the business, Henry Colt, along with a songwriter friend who worked at Cameo-Parkway Records, arranged for Chubby to do a private recording for Dick Clark. 5. It was at the recording session that Clark’s wife came up with his stage name, She asked him his name and he said his friends called him Chubby. Since he had just done a Fats Domino impression, she said, ‘As in Checker?’ The play on words, referring to both being a bit tubby and to a game, stuck. 6. The single recorded that day was a novelty song “The Class,” about a classroom filled with kids doing singing impressions of Fats Domino, The Coasters, Elvis Presley and Ricky Nelson, Frankie Avalon and Fabian as The Chipmunks. It was his first single for Cameo-Parkway and went to No. 38 on the charts in 1959. 7. Checker was 18 when he introduced “The Twist” in July 1960 at the Rainbow Club in Wildwood, N.J. 8. Written by Hank Ballard, his version of “The Twist” had previously hit No. 16 in 1959. Checker’s version is the only record in pop music history to become number one in two different years by the same artist (1960 and 1962). He also recorded the song in German, “Der Twist Beginnt,” and in 1988 did a version “The Twist” (Yo Twist) with the Fat Boys which went to No. 16 on the charts. 9. In 1962 “Let’s Twist Again” earned the first Grammy awarded for best rock & roll recording. 10. In 2008 he had a No. 1 dance hit on the charts, “Knock Down the Walls.” ■

Miss America Pageant 2015 Dates Set The finals of the 94-year-old pageant will be televised live on ABC-TV Sunday night, Sept. 14. Photo: Lew Steiner

iss America 2014 Nina Davuluri of Syracuse, New York, returned to Atlantic City Friday, Jan. 10, to partake in a press conference at the Atlantic City Sheraton and announce the date of the 2015 Miss America Pageant. The 94-year-old pageant will once again be held at AC’s Boardwalk Hall, where it started and returned to last year after an eight-year absence. A multi-year agreement brought Miss America back to Atlantic City in 2013, and September 2014 will mark the 60th anniversary of the pageant being broadcast on television. It is the longest-running televised show in the history of television. Sunday, Sept. 14, is the date of the Miss America Pageant finals, which will be broadcast live on ABC-TV starting 9pm. Preliminary competition will be Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 9-11, at Boardwalk Hall, and the ever-popular Miss America “Show Us Your Shoes Parade” will be held on the Boardwalk Saturday, Sept. 13 — the day before the pageant finals. Along with Davuluri, Friday’s press conference included Miss America Organization’s chairman and CEO Sam Haskell, Atlantic City’s newly elected mayor Don Guardian, Casino Reinvestment Development Authority executive director John Palmieri, Atlantic City Alliance president Liza Cartmell, and Miss America Organization president Sharon Pearce. “We plan to proudly showcase the beauty of Atlantic City and Miss America together once again on ABC,” said Haskell. “The country embraced our return to our birth-

place, which was evident last September with the best television ratings in over nine years. It was one of our most successful events in pageant history. We had such a good time. Nearly 10 million viewers tuned in to see an incredible young woman from the state of New York, Nina Davuluri, crowned as the first Miss America of IndianAmerican heritage. “We are excited as plans unfold for a new television event and we are so thrilled

election certainly showed what a diversified community we have here, and I could not be more excited that the first Miss America of Indian-American descent is happening at the same time that I’m serving as mayor of Atlantic City. It shows how much we’ve changed as a country, and how important it is to embrace our wonderful cultural diversity. And Atlantic City certainly is the town in which to do that.” Haskell mentioned during the press conference that he had been asked at a South Jersey Chamber of Commerce event if the Miss America Organization would ever consider returning to Las Vegas. “My answer was simply, ‘No,’” he said. “The governor’s team provided the impetus for bringing Miss America back to Atlantic City where it belongs,” said Palmieri. “The power of the Miss America brand and its positive economic impacts have empowered us to promote Atlantic City’s appeal as a tourism destination, beyond gaming.” “Not only was Miss America a huge ratings hit, it was driver of enormous positive publicity for Atlantic City,” said Cartmell. “I think it far exceeded most of our expectations. Much of the media that covered Miss America equated the competition’s return to Atlantic City as one symbol of the city’s great comeback. It also clearly and effectively demonstrated that Atlantic City offers more than just gaming, and across the entire spectrum this has been a case of a community pulling together to make something wonderful happen.” Tickets for the 2015 Miss America Competition will go on sale this spring. ■

to build on the success of being home in Atlantic City.” “I wanted to talk a little about my experience coming to Atlantic City for the first time,” said Davuluri. “Although I’m from New York, right around the corner, I had never been to Atlantic City until September and really didn’t know what to expect. But let me tell you, Atlantic City truly rolled out the red carpet for me and all of us contestants. The love and support and encouragement that we received from the entire community was truly amazing.” “I’m thrilled the pageant is back in my home town of Atlantic City, New Jersey,” said Guardian. “We certainly missed it, and I feel like the proud papa welcoming the family home again. Miss America will always be part of Atlantic City. This past

****** Alexander Payne is another filmmaker with a distinctive voice and style (The Descendants, Sideways, Election). He usually writes his own films but he found a great screenplay by Bob Nelson and by casting Bruce Dern in the role of his career, Nebraska is a film that reminds us that old people were once young, and that those same passions and dreams are still at play behind the wrinkles. The film is a love letter to Dern and he knows it, giving a beautifully measured performance as a cranky old man who is convinced — via one of those magazine sweepstakes letters — that he has won a million dollars. Will Forte, best known for his years on Saturday Night Live, is terrific as the son who takes his dad on a road trip to disappointment that allows him to bond with a man he never really understood growing up. In addition, June Squibb will certainly join Dern as an Oscar nominee this morning (Jan. 16) playing the frustrated, mouthy wife of the old coot.

expect, a by-the-book look at an actual Navy SEAL team mission that went terribly wrong in Afghanistan in 2005. If you’ve seen interviews with the real lone survivor of the mission, Marcus Luttrell (who co-wrote the book the film is based on), you are likely to have a strong emotional connection with the screen Luttrell (played by Mark Wahlberg). Luttrell’s involvement makes the film seem authentic. Luttrell has said the only way that the film fudged on the facts is that his team never considered killing the young goat herders who stumbled upon the team. When the team let the teenagers go they knew they would be in serious trouble and seeing the results of that decision make the brutal SEAL training sequences that open the film seem less brutal and more necessary. Actor, writer and director Peter Berg has had an up and down career (Battleship on the very bad end and Very Bad Things on the very good end). Working with a subject that brings out a near-documentary style in him, Lone Survivor shows us the landscape of modern warfare, which when it is men with guns facing men with guns is pretty THURSDAY, JAN. much the way war has been in the trenches The Musical Box since the Civil War. ■

he Coen Brothers have a distinct style that has served them well in the wildly eccentric landscapes they have conjured up for the past 30 years from Blood Simple to Fargo and No Country For Old Men. Inside Llewyn Davis settles nicely into the middle of their film canon, a movie about the folk scene in Greenwich Village right before Bob Dylan arrived and blew-up the genre into mainstream success. Inside Llewyn Davis is the story of a singer-songwriter whose career has been frozen by the grief of losing his songwriting partner. Llewyn Davis (Oscar Isaac) doesn’t feel right about being a solo artist, and while he keeps his grief and rage mostly boiling inside an empty looking façade, occasionally he explodes at his lack of control over his own life. There is also an orange cat who becomes a prominent character, including a road trip, that made me suspect that the Coens brothers were paying sly tribute to the 1970s road trip film Harry and Tonto. Isaac is terrific, the T-Bone Burnett produced music is delightful and Inside Llewyn Davis is a movie you chew over days after seeing it.

‘Ride Along’ with Ice Cube The rap and movie star talks about his old-school new film with Kevin Hart, his former group N.W.A., his new album and performing at the All-Stars of Hip-Hop show Jan. 19 at Boardwalk Hall. By Jeff Schwachter • feedback@acweekly.com

make you hate your favorite artists soon after you fell in love with them. You know? It’s like: Love Chris Brown, hate Chris Brown. “And it’s not because of Chris Brown [for example] is a bad artist or a bad guy — I think he had a bad day — but to pump it up all day, every day, that creates the stigma. At the same time, the same DJ goes home and chokes his wife over some shit. But they only want to talk about what Chris Brown did to Rhianna. Let’s everybody be real. What the DJs don’t understand is that without the artists they’re putting their own selves out of business. And then people are going to stop listening to the radio because people don’t have heroes in music anymore.” Jackson’s forthcoming album — Everythang’s Corrupt — has been in the works for a few years now. However, it will finally see the light of day on May 13. The album, the 10th for Jackson, who turns 45 this June, has been highly anticipated by his fans and the rap world at large. “That feels good,” Jackson says with a nervous laugh. “I just wanted to get it right. I’ve been tweaking it [a little] but really just sitting it down [while I’m working on a movie]. I don’t like to work on both at the same time. I like to be focused on what I’m doing. Then I’ll sit down and listen to it and figure out which tracks have stood the test of time for me. I’ll pick

up the rough cuts in the order I have and I’m always shuffling the order of records; I want the album to have a flow. And new [songs] will bump off old [ones] while some old records will make a comeback because I realize how good they were. And maybe I just fell in love with the new record just because it was new. Things like that happen during the course of a record. “You just want to give people the best art — with hooks and concepts and really have a theme for the album. Not just a bunch of collabs. Collaborations are different now. People have them all over their new album. Not me, one or two. I really believe that if I want to hear a Big Daddy Kane album, I want to hear Big Daddy Kane. I don’t want to hear everybody else on there. An artist should be able to hold an album on his own. “So I got an old-school approach to it, but I think it just works for me. Other people seem to appreciate it. They take some time to really dissect it and then they end up really liking the record.” One of the albums that Jackson worked on early in his career — Straight Outta Compton, by his then-group N.W.A., which featured MC Ren, Eazy-E, DJ Yella and Dr. Dre — has become one of the supreme classics of the genre and some say one of the first “gangsta rap” albums. Few know that Jackson actually wrote most of the lyrics on that classic album, including the rhymes for Dr. Dre and the late Eazy-E. Jackson, along with Dr. Dre and fellow Compton, Calif., rapper and writer The D.O.C., wrote the songs for Eazy-E’s debut album, Eazy-Duz-It, which dropped in September 1988. Although N.W.A.’s debut came out a month beforehand, Eazy-E’s album was recorded first. Jackson explains what it was like working on those two albums at the same time.. “I wrote a lot of those lyrics, but I got to give a lot of credit to The D.O.C. He helped Eazy a lot. And it was a task because we were putting two albums together. We were putting together the Eazy-Duz-It album, and a lot of people forget that that album preceded the N.W.A. album, but that was a double platinum record, too. So, there was a lot of rap writing that had to be done for those two albums. So at some point we needed D.O.C. to help and then MC Ren would chip in. So during the N.W.A. record that process was well established. “So after I would concentrate on my rhymes

I would help Eazy or sometimes one of his rhymes was written by the D.O.C. — so I never liked taking all the credit, but I’ll take most of it.” Jackson says working “under Dr. Dre for a good four years of just being around him and learning from him and being a part of it,” helped him prepare for his music career. “Then I said: I want to be a rapper too. I don’t want to just sit on the sidelines and be a like a helper. I want to get down too. I want people to love me and love my lyrics. I wanted people to love me as one of the best rappers in the world, just like Rakim, or any of those kind of MCs of the day. I started having dreams of just that and going for that and finding my niche. You know, hip-hop was our only weapon against the police in the ’80s. There was nothing else we could do but expose what was being done to us. So people all around the world aren’t only liking the way you rap but are feeling your pain on this front.” Jackson had a string of successful songs and albums with N.W.A. and following his departure from the rap supergroup as a solo artist. MTV would eventually rank him as No. 8 in their list of the Top 10 rappers of all-time. In 1992, Jackson released his third and most successful album The Predator. The album contained the MTV hit “It Was a Good Day,” which many say is Jackson’s best record. He compares it to his biggest film to date — Friday. “It’s a trip how much that song is tied in to the movie Friday. That song is a lot of good days wrapped into one song, to make one good day. And Friday is a lot of crazy shit that happened on my block all wrapped into one day. Both the video and the movie were directed by Gary Gray, so it’s like that record is people’s favorite record and that movie is a lot of people’s favorite movie of mine and they both were done in the same sort of spirit in a way.” The song, which details a day in South Central Los Anegeles when everything seems to go right for the narrator, contains the lines: “No helicopter looking for a murder / Two in the mornin got the Fatburger / Even saw the lights of the Goodyear Blimp / And it read, ‘Ice Cube’s a pimp.’” Twenty-two years after the song was released, it’s back in the news as there is a push for Goodyear to put “Ice Cube’s a Pimp!” in lights to raise money for a Los Angeles charity. There is currently a petition online. “Yeah, this dude has a petition or a Web site or something to raise money to put ‘Ice Cube’s a Pimp’ on the Goodyear Blimp and he would donate the proceeds to charity,” says Jackson with a laugh. “So, it’s kind of cool. I’ll see how far he gets with it before I decide if I’m get in there and really get him over the top.” As for Sunday’s show, Jackson says it’s still fun to perform. “I still love getting down,” he says. “I still want to be the best MC in the world. I still love performing at these shows and doing all my records over the years and some new [material]. Let people know the history and people party with party songs and think with the deep songs.” ■

ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY •JANUARY 16 - 22, 2014

’Shea Jackson – better known as Ice Cube — has been on a nationwide promo tour for his new film with comedian Kevin Hart, Ride Along. The promo tour included a recent stop in Philadelphia where the two went to a 76ers practice. “Yeah, we went out there and it was pretty cool,” says Jackson. “We jumped into their practice and Kevin just took over the poor guys’ practice. “It was kind of funny. We were hanging out and he hustled and took [some of the players] for about $800. It was pretty cool. He started shooting three pointers, right, and he started out really bad. Then he started almost hitting them. But then he said, ‘Anyone want to bet? I got $100.’ And one of the 76ers took the bait. And then others were like, ‘I’ll take that bet, too.’ Then about seven of them raised their hands. And Hart said, ‘OK, three out of five. I got to hit three out of five.’ “He hit the first two and I was like, ‘Aw, he gotcha all!’ Then he missed the next two — air balls. And I was like, ‘OK, pressure’s on, boy! Pressure’s on!’ Then he sunk that last one.” Jackson, who will take a break from the film’s promotion to headline the third annual All-Stars of Hip-Hop concert at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City on Sunday, Jan. 19, 7pm, which will also include Eve, Fat Joe, Doug E. Fresh, Eu and DJ Kool, gave Atlantic City Weekly an area-exclusive interview last Saturday. We started by talking about Ride Along. “This kind of movie is the kind you go to the movies for,” says Jackson. “This is like when, I remember, you had to come to the movies. Or you had to wait like two years until they put it on late-night TV or something. So, this movie takes me back to 48 Hrs., Lethal Weapon, and more recently Bad Boys and Rush Hour. It’s in that stratosphere — this movie. “For this generation, you can’t really explain to people how it was to go to the movies as a teenager in the ’80s, when blockbusters were the norm — from Jaws to Indiana Jones. You know, Back to the Future and Trading Places — you just can’t replicate that intersection of big-theater blockbusters [that] you can only go to the theater to see. “But for this generation, for whoever wasn’t there, you can’t recreate a loveable chemistry and do [something] you want to see over and over again.” Jackson says it’s the same with music. “You know, back in the ’60s, it was the golden age of rock and roll and the ’80s are the golden age of hip-hop. You remember picking up an album and reading every last [liner note] because [the song on it] didn’t have no video. Or they won’t play the video. Or you seen the video once, but you never seen it again. Things like that, that we lived through, all the things we had — album covers, magazines — things that made you really have heroes in music. “DJs used to be ugly and nasty. They used to promote artists. Now they promote themselves. And they talk about who fucked up and they
