T

he Noyes Museum of Art of Stockton College will showcase a new exhibition called The Art of Conflict starting Friday, Jan. 18, and featuring visual representations of conflict and war. The exhibition will run until April 21, with an opening reception scheduled for Friday, Feb. 8, from 5-8pm, at which time the artists will be in attendance for a meet-and-greet. The featured artists include Rajie Cook, David Keefe, Veru Narula, Rhoda Wall and works from the Combat Paper Project — a New Jersey-based effort that utilizes art-making workshops to assist veterans in reconciling and sharing their personal experiences, as well as “broadening the traditional narrative surrounding service and the military culture.” Through the presentation of various elements of warfare, discord and displacement, the exhibition sets out to raise the viewer’s awareness of conflict and to promote a greater understanding of it. The Noyes Museum of Art is located at 733 Lily Lake Rd., in Oceanville, Galloway Twp. Museum hours are Mon.-Sat. 10am-4:30pm, Thurs. 10am-8pm, and Sun. noon-5pm. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for students and seniors. For more information call 652-8848 or visit noyesmuseum.org.

he air is brisk and ocean temperatures are around a cool 45 degrees, which can only mean that it is time once again for the annual Wildwoods Polar Bear Plunge. On Saturday, Jan. 19, at 1pm, brave bathers will crowd the beach behind the Wildwoods Convention Center as they prepare to face the winter water’s chill. With funds benefiting the Special Olympics of New Jersey, one of the main objectives for the 2013 event is to encourage plungers to participate in teams of 10 or more to promote competitive fundraising. While spectators are invited to come take part in the fun for free, those who wish to make the shivery splash are asked to raise $100 each or $1,000 per teams of ten. Prior to the event, the “Beef and Brrr Benefit for the Plunge” will take place Friday, Jan. 18, at 7pm at the Bolero Resort (3320 Atlantic Ave., Wildwood), where a $20 donation includes a beef buffet, drink specials, live entertainment, and a live auction. Registration is offered online at sonj.org as well as in person the day of the event, with check-in open from 10am-noon inside the Convention Center, where all post-plunge activities will take place including a free lunch for participants. Over 22,000 New Jersey Special Olympians benefit from the Wildwoods Polar Bear Plunge, therefore incentives will be given for raising funds for the athletes, with special recognition given to the participant with the highest amount of money raised. For more information, visit njpolarplunge.org or call 896-8000.

In the year or so before he passed away on May 27, 2011, Gil Scott-Heron, the artist who said “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,” seemed to be rising like a phoenix from years of legal, drug and health problems. The year before, England’s esteemed XL label (Radiohead, Adele) released his first new album in more than a decade — the widely acclaimed I’m New Here — and his long-awaited book/autobiography was being prepared for publication (The Last Holiday: A Memoir, which would be published posthumously by the U.K.’s Canon Gate Books in January 2012). Scott-Heron’s death left a lot of unanswered questions about the poet/ musician/songwriter/author’s life — many of which still remain following the release of his book. But there is hope that more material (and answers) will be coming forth and that some of the late singer-songwriter’s best music — some long out of print — will be made more accessible in the years to come. This past Jan. 8, BGP Records released The Revolution Begins: The Flying Dutchman Masters, a three-CD set, collecting all of the surviving recordings the young ScottHeron made for the Flying Dutchman label in 1971 and 1972. Along with tracks from his first three albums (Small Talk at 125th and Lenox, Pieces of a Man and Free Will), the exceptional set also collects a rare recording with Pretty Purdie’s band and a whole disc featuring an alternative version of 1972’s Free Will album. Also included is a wonderful 56-page booklet featuring many rare early photos, 45 covers and advertisements, as well as detailed liner notes by the set’s compiler Dean Rudland. From astonishing early songs such as “Lady Day and John Coltrane,” “Home Is Where the Hatred Is,” “Save the Children” and “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,” which make an extraordinary entrance on disc one (dubbed “Songs”), to spoken-word tracks such as “Whitey on the Moon,” “Billy Green Is Dead” and the original spoken-word version of “The Revolution Will Not …” — the song was re-recorded with a full band for Scott-Heron’s second album — on disc two (dubbed “Poetry, Jazz & The Blues”), to the alternative version of Scott-Heron’s third album, Free Will, taking up the entire third disc (including two alternate takes of the title track), the new set exposes a young artist just turned 20 and doing something few others were doing at the time. Namely, what the young Chicago native was doing was asking simple questions about America and making extremely candid statements in a new in-your-face format, first as a poet and author and then as a singer and songwriter. Questions such as “Who’ll Pay Reparations on My Soul?” and “If we know all we say we know about the problems, why can’t we do something to try and solve them?” and “You keep saying ‘kick it, quit it, kick it, quit it, but did you ever try?” and statements such as “Home is where the needle marks try to heal my broken heart” and “There will be no pictures of you and Willie Mae … trying to slide the color TV into a stolen ambulance” are just a few examples of the poet’s genius represented in this new set. This is where Scott-Heron’s musical journey began. (He had already written his first published novel, The Vulture, as well as a book of poetry while in the midst of attending Lincoln University.) Hopefully, his revolution in music will continue to be center stage on more great re-issues like this one so that new audiences can discover — and old ones can rediscover — one of the most gifted and marvelous thinkers and musicians of our time. — Jeff Schwachter

The Somers Point Jazz Society forges ahead with live music and educational programming through the colder months. By Ray Schweibert • feedback@acweekly.com

id-winter may be approaching, but the Somers Point Jazz Society (SPJS) has a sizzling slate of activity going on, starting with the seventh annual Somers Point Winter Jazz Series that will feature the VCF Trio as its opening act Saturday, Jan. 19, at Gregory’s (900 Shore Road in Somers Point). The trio takes the stage at 8:30pm and includes Vic Stevens on drums, Chico Huff on bass and Frank Strauss on keyboards. Stevens has played professionally since age 16, having performed live or in the studio with jazz guitar legends Pat Martino (whose trio headlines the SPJS’s 16th annual Jazz @ the Point Festival April 11-14), Larry Carlton, Allan Holdsworth, Andreas Oberg and others. Also a professional since his teens, Huff is largely a self-taught musician who has also toured with Marino and fellow music luminaries James Taylor, Carly Simon, Edgardo Cintron and others. Strauss recently moved back to his hometown of Philadelphia after having toured, performed, arranged and recorded with a number of notable artists in the Los Angeles music scene for 15 years, among them Tom Jones and Melissa Manchester. On Saturday, Feb. 16, the series will see the seven-piece Atlantic City Jazz Band perform the traditional New Orleans jazz, bop

and swing it is has become well known for starting 8:30pm at Gregory’s, and on Sunday, March 10, the 2013 Jazz Master Award Reception will start 5pm at Sandi Pointe Coastal Bistro (908 Shore Road), with the Barry Miles Trio (with Miles on piano, Tim Lekan on bass and Bob Shomo on drums) taking the stage at 6pm. Admission is free to all performances, but donations to the SPJS are appreciated. For more info visit spjazz.org or call 927-6677. The SPJS and Ocean City Free Public Library are teaming up to present a threepart Jazz Education Series on consecutive Sundays Feb. 24, March 3 and 10. Admission is free and all three dates will run from 2-3:30pm at the Ocean City Library. “It’s been very popular since we first started it,” says Ocean City Library director Chris Maloney. “We added much-needed meetingroom space in 2009 and greatly increased our educational programming. I reached out to [SPJS president] Nick [Regine] about four years ago and I am very happy that I did, as we’ve created a good working relationship and an educational and entertaining series of programs for all to enjoy. “Nick introduced me to Michael Pedicin, a jazz musician and college professor,” adds Maloney. “Michael is a wonderful musician [a

tenor sax specialist] who uses his experience to attract other professional musicians to perform for these programs … Our upcoming series focuses on different jazz instruments and their respective musicians, starting with the jazz bassist on February 24, the jazz drummer on March 3, and the jazz vocalist on March 10.” “Chris and the library were so willing to collaborate on this, and we’ve always managed to draw a great crowd for each part of the series,” says Pedicin. “This is the fifth one I’ve been part of and we always do them in three parts on consecutive Sundays. I always tied an educational piece in to the performance or vice versa. “The first one [Feb. 24] chronicles how the bass is not only an integral part of the rhythm section of a band, but how it’s evolved into its own entity thanks to solo artists like Stanley Clarke and Jaco Pastorius — guys who have created such a phenomenal interest in the bass itself, and have come into their own light as creators, composers, band leaders and everything else. The second one [March 3] is very similar but profiles the drummer and his evolution from mere timekeeper to soloist. “The final one [March 10] is a little different in that I tried to incorporate three different vocalists with three distinctly different styles,” says Pedicin. “Each one will speak about different references of theirs and different idols of theirs — people whom they’ve listened to and learned from in the process of developing their own styles.” Pedicin is also conducting a series of high school student workshops — among them Jan. 25 at Ocean City High School and Feb. 8 at EHT High School — and will kick off the Jazz @ the Point Festival on April 11 with

Atlantic City Jazz Band

an advanced youth workshop from 8:30am12:30pm at the Mission Point Church in Somers Point. Pianist/composer/arranger Jim Ridl will be the guest lecturer, and six clinicians will cover a variety of jazz instruments such as keyboard, guitar, woodwinds, brass and drums. “The kids learn techniques, we’ll have improvisational workshops, we’ll have ensemble playing and participation, we’ll teach them about playing in a big band and the individual sections of a big band — this is the third year I’ve done it and it’s a fun time,” says Pedicin. “They’re children, they’re like sponges, and with the younger ones there’s no biases yet, nobody’s saying this isn’t hip or I’m not listening to this crap. In high school you begin to see more leaning toward peer approval, but if you get one or two kids going home to parents and saying this is really interesting, do you know anything about this music, or can we go see somebody play like this? I figure we’ve won.” n

The Boss at Bader Field? U By David Spatz • feedback@acweekly.com

nless you’re heavily into the electronic dance music scene, you probably didn’t have a clue that Atlantic City was the center of the EDM universe on New Year’s Eve. Five of the world’s top 10 EDM DJs were spinning in Atlantic City as 2012 turned into 2013. And one of the biggest wasn’t even within spitting distance of one of the casino nightclubs where you’d expect to find him. Steve Aoki, who’s become a regular in Atlantic City during the past couple of years, was the primary reason why 6,000 young people spent the last few hours of the year gone by in a heated tent at Bader Field. Aoki was the headline DJ at Life in Color, the electronic dance music extravaganza where guests are showered with music and sprayed with gallons of colorful, water-soluble paint as part of the festivities. The event was such a success that the promoters are already thinking about staging a similar event at the former airport over the July 4 holiday. “It just goes to show you that if you think outside the box ... that with a little ingenuity and some hard work, you can get things done,” says Bobby Laws of Media Mogul Group, one of the event’s promoters. “This was a way to introduce younger people to our city and the wonderful things it has to offer.” Laws, whose career has included a stint as director of player development for an Atlantic City casino, said the marketing strategy for Atlantic City today is a radical departure from the types of guests he was trying to bring to Atlantic City during his casino days. “We were always looking for an older audience,” he says. “Nobody seemed to think about what the future of Atlantic City was going to be.” Laws admits EDM wasn’t necessarily his type of music when he got involved with the project several months ago. He says his familiarity with EDM was similar to early 1950s DJ Alan Freed, one of the early radio pioneers of rock ‘n roll. “I’m the older guy, but I think I’m embracing the young people and their music,” he says with a laugh. While the city supported Life in Color – a party that had its roots on college campuses seven years ago – he also said officials were erring on the side of caution as the event drew near. They wanted to make sure the thousands attending the show would be safe. For instance, the tent that went up for the party could have held far more people, but

the city asked the promoters to keep attendance below the tent’s capacity. “The tent could have held up to 10,000 if need be. But the fire marshal and the public safety director felt we should keep it to around 7,200 just to keep it safe for the young people,” Laws explains. “And they were right, so we kept the number low, and everyone had plenty of room.” The city also required the promoters to submit the chemical and molecular makeup of the paint to make sure it was safe when it came into contact with human skin. “They weren’t taking any chances,” he says. According to Laws, Life in Color generated over 23 million views when it was streamed live on the Internet on New Year’s Eve. So the event introduced Atlantic City to more than just the 6,000 people who attended. “We have so many people wanting to come back to Atlantic City to experience that,” he says. “Or they saw it on their computers. They weren’t able to make it, so they watched [online]. They’ve seen it, and now they want to be a part of it. And that’s the great thing, because now those same people who couldn’t be here are going to make it their business to be here next year. Laws says it’s premature to reveal specifics about the show he and his co-promoter, Josh Kessler of LineRocket in Los Angeles, are hoping to produce in July. He also says he’s got offers in to some A-list artists hoping to entice them to play Atlantic City. Although he wouldn’t name names, he did drop a very big hint. “I’ll just say that [Gov. Christie] has been trying to get [this entertainer] since Revel opened, which I probably shouldn’t even be saying,” he says with a laugh. Laws is referring to Bruce Springsteen, whom Christie was hoping would perform in Atlantic City last Labor Day to wrap up the summer of 2012. ■

“This was a way to introduce younger people to our city and the wonderful things it has to offer.”

Palladino’s Trifecta

Luke’s Kitchen and Marketplace

Revel Resort, 500 Boardwalk, A.C. 855-348-0500 Sun.-Thurs. 9am-11pm; Fri.-Sat. 9am-5pm

Star chef Luke Palladino recently opened his third Atlantic City eatery, Luke’s Kitchen & Marketplace at Revel. By Frank Gabriel • feedback@acweekly.com

Photos: Craig Billow

The “Hangover Pizza” with two fried eggs, prosciutto, capicola, sausage, bacon and chives

Sicilian-style pizza by the slice has recently been added, with options like Italian sausage and pepper, chicken parm and a six-veggie combo, all less than five bucks. The space itself is airy and open, with exposed pipes and beams hanging from a recessed ceiling. As with Palladino’s other ventures, Scott Ecckard of Northfield provides the interior design. White walls give way to an L-shaped section — over the theater-style food delivery line — covered with Italian verbage like pasta, pizza, formaggi, authentico, fresco and salumi in foot-high script. But that front-of-house look is really just the tip of the iceberg. Behind it, hidden from view, is a massive pantry and prep area where virtually all of what is vended here begins life. Having opened in July, months after Revel’s official coronation, Luke’s has been crafted, and tweaked, to accommodate the needs

of the mothership. This includes providing retail items like gourmet snacks, pastas, sauces, vinegars and oils along with chilled wine and beer to go. Plus there’s Peroni, Italy’s fine refreshing golden lager, occupying its own dedicated tap. An array of antipasti, artistan cheeses, meats and spreads adorn the adjacent cold cases, beckoning with bright colors and artful shapes. Even burgers are truly special, formed from a combination of beef short rib, chuck and sirloin, presented on a shiny, griddled Brioche with bib lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles and Palladino’s take on Thousand Island, “LP Sauce.” The result — particularly the monster

facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly

double — is a juicy, messy, deluxe burger possessing a flavor profile distinctively different from standard 80-20 blends. It’s best consumed with their hearty, steakcut Idaho wedge fries, dusted with an aromatic, rosemary-scented “secret salt.” Luke’s is also one of few places we know of in town that does right by that most humble of Americana-heritage foods, the hot dog. Five varieties are on the bill of fare — chili; “stuffed” featuring kielbasa, mustard, ketchup, cheddar, onions, sauerkraut and bacon; a “split dog” with cheddarwurst, chili, pickled jalapenos and provolone cheese wiz; New York and Chicago styles — that final including all the classic trimmings; minced raw onion, sweet relish, cherry peppers, dill pickle slices, tomatoes, yellow mustard, celery salt and a poppy-seed bun. With a further choice of Hebrew National dog or frankfurter, it’s also a real value at only $7. Running the kitchen here is chef James Lepobsky, a local born and raised in Chelsea Heights. He seems genuinely excited about this position, even when surreptitiously interrupted by the boss, reporter in tow. When he offers that “It’s been great here so far — people love the variety and freshness,” you tend to believe him, surrounded on a daily basis by such a plethora of fine food. ■ see more online @

o say that Luke Palladino knows Atlantic City well is a bit of an understatement. Having arrived locally in 2003 as one of the starry opening-day roster of Borgata chefs, he currently has achieved an unusual trifecta — owning and operating three eponymous facilities. The first is one of the region’s very best BYOBs, at the intersection of Tilton Road and Route 9 in Northfield; the second a superb, high-end casino restaurant at Harrah’s. Recently Palladino debuted a more-accessible, casual-food provider — Luke’s Kitchen & Marketplace at Revel. Palladino has even coined a new term to describe the unique genre of that latest entity, labeling it “quality quick-serve.” Situated just across from Ovation Hall, Luke’s Marketplace is designed to accommodate large numbers of patrons quickly. A pair of interactive touch screens at the rear of the eatery enable customers to place their own orders, and then repair to an attached patio while awaiting delivery. The menu is extensive, providing breakfast all day, baked goods, pasta, pizza, stromboli, specialties, deli sandwiches, salads, hot dogs, paninis and larger plates. One notable signature is a great-sounding breakfast sandwich called “Luke’s Way,” comprised of peppers, eggs, sirloin, provolone and cherry-pepper mayo on an A.C. roll. Sicilianstyle pizza by the slice has recently been added, with options like Italian sausage and pepper, chicken parm and a six-veggie combo, all less than five bucks. Also new to the menu is a section of classic deli fare — egg, chicken and tuna salads plus ham-and-Swiss, corned or roast beef — all with competitive price points of just $8.75. Which all should serve to reinforce Palladino’s statement, “You don’t have to spend a lot for good stuff.” Even the single most expensive item, a two-and-a-half-pound steamed Maine lobster, is reasonably listed at $27.

Stoked for a Skatepark Atlantic City could become the next city in America to build one of the popular recreational parks and many are coming together to help make it happen. By Jeff Schwachter • feedback@acweekly.com

J

ason Forslund remembers when he initially had the idea to build a skatepark in Atlantic City. A few years ago, after finishing a surf session in midtown, he and his friends saw “a beautiful old rundown building on Pacific Avenue,” he says. “The thought came to me, ‘Man, that would make a cool indoor skatepark!’ That was the beginning.” Over the past few years, the 26-year-old founder of the Atlantic City Skateboarding Association and avid surfer has made it his mission to make his skatepark dream a reality. First, he set up a Facebook account (which now has more than 1,500 followers). One can find the Facebook page by searching for “Skate AC,” a motto Forslund borrowed in part from the Atlantic City Alliance’s (ACA) “DO AC” marketing campaign. Although there are a lot of skateboarders in the area — and even more who visit in the warmer months — there are not a lot of places for skaters to do their grinds, pops and ollies in Atlantic City. The timing of Forslund’s founding of the skatepark association was perfect. In the fall of 2011 and through January 2012, through open forums, the Internet and board meetings, the ACA and Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA) were seeking input from local residents and businesses with regard to the city’s new master plan and statemandated tourism district. During the late summer and fall months of 2011 Forslund had started to put together a basic business plan for the skatepark and via the Facebook page and word-of-mouth a

“We really [see the skatepark] as an opportunity [to complement] all of the other non-gaming kinds of activities that we want to support.” grass roots effort began with support from skateboarders of all ages and from all over the country. Forslund would soon learn that information about the positive effects a skatepark can have on a community and how to build them financially and environmentally friendly was spelled out quite clearly on several Web sites from around the world and jibed with what he hoped the skatepark would bring to Atlantic City. “Since I’ve never been a part of a process like this I wasn’t really sure where to start,” says Forslund. “[But] my last job was privately funded and I was lucky enough to participate in creating the business plan for it, which gave me a little insight into how to put such a plan together. I spent some time reading through a couple Web sites that inform advocates on the process of getting your city to see the benefits of having a skatepark and what it takes to build one the right way. The amount of information out there is vast; advocates who are successful love to share their stories of success.”

Forslund believes that the project has a lot of potential to help bring A.C. a new attraction and serve as a new cultural hub for the city. “If the park is well received by the people who come to skate it, like we anticipate it will be, the sky is the limit,” he says. “Atlantic City needs something that the younger generations can identify with and a celebrated skatepark is a perfect catalyst to get their attention. If promoted and programmed correctly, the A.C. skatepark will be a hotbed of creativity, athleticism, expression and culture. So much of A.C.’s image is the casinos and all the preconceptions that come with them. [Skateboarding] culture is the exact opposite.” On Dec. 15, 2011, Forslund attended one of the CRDA’s board meetings. He decided to rise from his seat and address the board. “The first time I spoke in front of the CRDA board I was pretty nervous,” says Forslund. “I don’t even remember what I said. But from what I hear it left a good impression with members of the board.” Forslund’s first proposal, which basically

stated: We need a skatepark and here is why, was included in a four-page business plan he had crafted. The CRDA’s John Palmieiri, who had just recently been brought in as the state agency’s head, was impressed. Following the CRDA’s release of its tourism district master plan in early February 2012, Palmieri reached out to Forslund. “I heard from the CRDA office a few weeks after they released the new master plan, which to my surprise, had a skatepark listed as one of 12 initiatives that the board had planned for Atlantic City over the next five years,” says Forslund. “The park was listed with a 0-2 year completion time.” Palmieri, in an interview with Atlantic City Weekly, says the project, if approved, could be completed by “late summer.” He remembers when Forslund came to that December 2011 CRDA board meeting, just months before the tourism district master plan was due to be turned in to the state. “When we went through the master plan planning process, we identified so many different kinds of non-gaming uses that we want to consider and really dozens of uses were identified,” says Palmieiri. “I think that Jason might have identified this as part of the master planning process, but beyond that process, he came in and talked to us ... and kind of brought it to our attention. “But as we began to think about it a little bit we determined that it might work well if we could deal with [the] public safety and liability issues. And I think that we can. I think that we’ll be able to figure that out and that is going to be important. We have been consulting with Tom Gilbert, our commander for the [tourism] district, and talked to the police officials about this, and so I think we’ll be able to figure out the right kind of plan. And these [skatepark] design-build guys know how to do it [right]. But yes, I think initially [the idea] came from Jason. ... He came to a board meeting [and] we decided to follow up. And that’s the way the public process should work.” Forslund says it felt great to have his idea taken seriously by the CRDA and that the organization has been fantastic to work with. “My experience with the CRDA and its staff has been really refreshing,” he says. “At every meeting I’ve attended members would approach me and introduce themselves, ask what they could do to help me see my idea become a reality. I believe they took this idea so seriously because it just happens to hit every one of the tourism district criteria goals and new priorities for the CRDA and how it relates to the new Atlantic City: it’s non-gaming, it’s youth and family orientated, it gives back to the people of Atlantic City and it will help modernize the attractions A.C. has to offer. “From what I am told, the park will be supervised at all times by a staff inside the park, which should give parents the piece of mind that their child will be in a safe and controlled environment.” As for the process, Palmieiri says that since RFPs officially went out towards the end of 2012, his staff has been interviewing several of some of the country’s best skatepark building firms, all of which are eager to get the job. see more online @

its proximity to the Wave, the Walk and the A.C. Expressway. This would mean families and skateboarding enthusiasts young and old could have a totally new experience in the resort town. “Exactly, and that sounds good doesn’t it?” says Palmieri. “And we like to think that it could work and that families that come shopping or that are visiting for the weekend with their kids would be able to feel comfortable in knowing that they could drop [their children] off for a couple hours. “We see it as potentially being a sympathetic use, a complementary use, and that’s what we are aiming for obviously. And it all gets down to management and how we build it and how do [we] ensure that it’s not misused at night, for instance. And there are ways to deal with that. .... I think that we can control access and manage it and make it, but we want it to be a friendly place. So those are the kinds of things that we’ll be dealing with as we select the favored design builder. We’ll be examining that, but the site that we have

in mind is the one that is directly in front of the garage.” In the meantime, Forslund, fellow skateboarders (including members of the grass roots Atlantic City R.A.D. movement) and supporters will be doing what they’ve been doing all along — gaining interest and additional support and “keeping up the hype and a steady flow of information via Facebook and word of mouth,” says Forslund. Greg Simmons, 28, one of the founders of the R.A.D. (Renaissance and Discovery) movement in Atlantic City in 2009, helps kids in Atlantic City learn how to skateboard. He thinks it’s a perfect time for Atlantic City to have its own skatepark as other cities do around the world. (Most recently, rap star Lil’ Wayne opened a skatepark in New Orleans, while world-famous skater Tony Hawk announced he would be joined by musicians such as Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Ben Harper and others to build skateparks across the country. “Everything’s happening organically; it’s

coming together the way it should,” says Simmons. Fellow skater and R.A.D. colleague Jason Klotz, 24, of Margate, says he feels the skatepark will bring a “different vibe” to Atlantic City. “I know it will bring in folks from New York and Philadelphia and all over the place and I think it’s going to give the local kids access to a larger network of skateboarders and creative people. And we really need that around here,” he says. Klotz and his skateboarding friends have been teaching Atlantic City youth how to skate — mainly at an area they use outside the Sovereign Avenue School — but have also been mentors to them, exposing new and creative ways of thinking to the children. “With the R.A.D. movement we want to give lessons to teach kids how to skate, and then bring art to the park as well to show the kids different things about graphic design, photography, film, editing and just show them that skateboarding can open up a lot of doors,” says Klotz. “You don’t have to be a pro skater to work in the industry and do something you love, so that’s what we’re hoping to continue to do on a larger scale. We want to give local kids hope.” “Above all else I hope the park has a strong programming schedule,” says Forslund. “The skatepark will be successful and shine brightest with nightly, weekly and monthly events that are always going on. A retail spot, a legit skate shop, would be awesome too sometime down the line.” Forslund, who has spent hours upon hours researching, meeting with the CRDA and city officials, keeping abreast of the progress of the project, says none of what he has put into the skatepark project has felt like “hard work.” “When I first decided to push for the skatepark I made up my mind that I was going to do everything and anything I could to make it happen,” he says. “Along the way I have learned so much about skateparks and what goes into creating a successful one. I have also learned how to become a part of my community on a deeper level through advocating. Anyone can make change. If you know what you’re talking about, how to talk about it, and who to talk about it to you can do just about anything.” ■ see more online @

“We had some interviews last week,” says Palmieiri. “I think maybe we have another one scheduled this week. Then we will make a recommendation to the [CRDA] board soon. I don’t think we’ll be ready for the January meeting, probably the February meeting. So if they would approve it, then we would have a fund reservation set aside for the use and that would allow us to select the design-build team and give them a proceed order.” Palmieiri says choosing the right site for the skatepark is crucial. Although several sites across Atlantic City have been considered for the skatepark, which is now slated to be an outdoor facility with some rental and retail space — at least in its first phase — Palmieri’s choice location is pretty firm and quite sensible. “We really [see the skatepark] as an opportunity [to complement] all of the other nongaming kinds of activities that we want to support,” says Palmieri. “And we own a few parcels and this one we thought would be a potentially very good location.” One of the concerns, says Palmieiri, is to ensure “that whatever we do fits into the environment ... [and] that we do it in a way that satisfies the kind of requirements that we are imposing for state-of-the-art, clean and safe, and that it be a secure and well-managed facility. Those are very important [and] we want the best design obviously.” One of the locations being considered, and one that both Palmieiri and Forslund favor, is the vacant tract of land on Arctic Avenue between Mississippi and Missouri avenues next to the former Patsy Wallace community center. The location makes sense for a variety of reasons, say proponents. It’s near the new Wave parking garage as well as Tanger’s outlets at the Walk, and is in the Ducktown neighborhood where the CRDA, Stockton College, grass roots groups such as ARTC and the ACA have been pondering an arts district to take root. “The shopping environment [is there], the garage is there, the outlets are there, it’s close to the casino precinct — we want it to work in every way, in every sense of the word,” says Palmieri. Although no site has been officially selected yet, Palmieri considers the Patsy Wallace site as being ideal because of

Out of The Darkness

Hard rock band is back after ‘everything started to disintegrate,’ says drummer Ed Graham. By Ed Condran • feedback@acweekly.com

hen the Darkness debuted during the dawn of the last decade, the British band was the answer for bleak, nihilistic nu metal and its predecessor, grunge. The Darkness was hard rock to the hilt with all of the accouterments. The band, which impressed at Philadelphia’s Theater of Living Arts in 2003, put together a larger than life stage show in small theaters. Spandex-clad vocalist Justin Hawkins would climb to the rafters and sing about sex, drugs and well, anything decadent. Their celebratory 2003 debut Permission To Land found an audience. “I Believe In A Thing Called Love,” was a minor hit and “Growing On Me” and “Black Shuck” quickly became fan favorites. “It was an amazing time for us,” drummer Ed Graham tells Atlantic City Weekly while calling from Fort Lauderdale, Fla. “We just exploded in London and it was incredible getting the reaction we did in the States. The shows were full of energy, us feeding off the fans. And you never knew what Justin would do.” That became part of the problem for the Darkness. After recording the followup, One Way

“It was all totally unexpected. I received a call, but it was a call I never thought I would receive. I couldn’t have been more thankful.” Ticket To Hell ... And Back in 2005 Hawkins became a rock cliché circa 1980: the scissorkicking frontman, who would dive into the maw of a crowd embraced drugs and alcohol. “With all the problems, well, everything started to disintegrate,” Graham says. “It was horrible. We had this great thing and it just died.” Hawkins went into rehab and completed the program. However, when he was clean, he went solo and the remaining members, including his brother guitarist Dan Hawkins formed Stone Gods. “We didn’t speak to each other for awhile,” Graham says. “But it was inevitable that we would have some contact eventually since Dan and Justin are brothers.”

The band, which will perform Friday, Jan. 18, at the House of Blues, made up and reunited in 2012 with original bassist Frankie Poullain, who left after the Permission To Land tour. “It was all totally unexpected,” Graham says. “I received a call, but it was a call I never thought I would receive. I couldn’t have been more thankful.” The band quickly signed with Windup records and cranked out Hot Cakes, which is cut from the cloth of its album Permission To Land. The tunes are catchy with big riffs about all that is hedonistic. There are also some love songs in the mix. “Nobody does love songs anymore,” Graham says. “I feel like we’re filling a void. We give you spirited, fun songs.”

“She’s Just a Girl, Eddie,” is perhaps the most spirited, amusing new cut. “That’s my song,” Graham says. “I probably shouldn’t have revealed that but it’s a song Justin and Dan wrote about my situation, which is pretty self-explanatory. I went through a rough breakup and, well, you have to move on. We write songs based on what’s happening around us and we just have fun. The Darkness is about having a blast. After the way we broke up, who would have ever guessed that we would be back having fun again? You really do appreciate it when you have a second go at something.” Expect an energetic show in Atlantic City. ”It’ll be fun playing a casino city,” Graham says. “It’s always that way in those kind of towns. We get revved up. We’ll have our fun, you can bet on that. But we’re having so much fun no matter where we’re playing. It’s like we’re reborn.” Graham says the Darkness will continue releasing albums — as long as the band’s singer stays clean — and that they appreciate the opportunity to continue making a living making music. “I don’t think there is any reason to stop,” Graham says. “We’re hitting our stride creatively. We’re really happy with this album and we know we can go farther and farther together. It’s a brilliant time for this band. We have a lot to offer our fans. We’re feeding off of each other. We’re getting along great. The sky is the limit for this group. The standards are much higher for this band that it ever was, but it makes sense since there is so much that we can accomplish. There is so much talent and drive. We just have to work even harder with what we do next. We want to surprise people.” The Darkness has done just that by covering Radiohead’s “Street Spirit (Fade Out),” which is seldom rendered live by the iconic British band. “We wanted to do a cover song, but not one would [people would expect] The Darkness to choose to do,” Graham says. “I think people would automatically think, ‘They’re doing a cover; it’s got to be a classic rock song from the ’70s or something like that.’ No, we opted not to go that way! We went with a song we really love from Radiohead. It’s not one of their better known songs but I think it’s a perfect fit with what we were doing with this album. You never know what to expect from the Darkness except that we’re going to do what we want to do.” ■ see more online @

Tough Women

‘Zero Dark Thirty’ and ‘The Impossible’ feature admirable heroines By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com

D

Deadly Water World

irector Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal, who teamed up for the Oscar-winning Hurt Locker, have successfully gone to war again with Zero Dark Thirty, a suspenseful look at the decade long search for Osama bin Laden. Who could ever have imagined that the CIA in this modern era would be defined, in artistic terms, by a couple of women, Homeland’s badass, Carrie Matheson, and in this film, the determined CIA analyst Maya, played by Oscar nominated Jessica Chastain. We watch in admiration as Maya tracks down the tiniest breadcrumbs in the drawn out search for a wily opponent whose understanding of spy “tradecraft” makes him nearly impossible to locate. However, Maya, who appears to have no life beyond her job, will not give up. In the course of the film we see torture used as a tool to extract information, as well as bribery, wiretaps and endless research. We also see suicide bombers and other acts of terror that continue to take lives. The torture scenes have earned the film some backlash, the assumption being that showing the torture somehow suggests that the filmmakers condone such actions. My take on Zero Dark Thirty is that because it is based on classified information, the filmmakers are making their best guess on how such as action would take place based on their extensive research. It is a fictionalized account of the events, and to slam it for not being accurate is ridiculous. This is not a documentary. It is a drama that provides a thrilling look at how difficult it was to find bin Laden and the years of research and dedication it took to finally locate him, with an exciting early morning raid on bin Laden’s compound as the breathtaking finale. Zero Dark Thirty (the term refers to 12:30am in Navy SEAL-speak) is as toughminded and focused as its heroine in front of the camera and its heroine behind the camera.

irected by Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage), The Impossible, based on a true story of one family’s survival after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, slams you with the force of that wall of water with such brilliant authenticity and magnificent cinematography, you almost feel like you are drowning watching it. The riveting footage focuses on a family literally torn asunder by the raging water while on Christmas holiday in Thailand. Maria (Oscar nominated Naomi Watts) finds herself clinging to a tree with a badly injured leg helpless as she watches her 14-year-old Lucas (superbly played by Tom Holland) float by. She lets go, hoping to reach him. Eventually they are reunited, desperate to know if the rest of the family is alive (Ewan McGregor as the dad, Henry, and two younger brothers, played by Samuel Joshlin and Oaklee Pendergast). Once the water recedes, the massive numbers of injured people in overflowing hospitals with overwhelmed staff is nearly as gut wrenching as the wave of water that created this landscape of human debris. Helped by great acting, especially by Watts and Holland, director Bayona and his screenwriter, Sergio G. Sanchez, have done an admirable job of bringing the horror of a real disaster to the screen with truth and compassion. Both these films are on my top 10 list for 2012.
