‘Claiming Citizenship’ Exhibit at Stockton Through Feb. 28
In conjunction with February being Black History Month, the richard Stockton College of new jersey is hosting an inspiring photography exhibit called Claiming Citizenship: African Americans and New Deal Photography now through Feb. 28, on the first floor of the college library (E-Wing of the main campus). Claiming Citizenship is a traveling photographic exhibit created by historian and independent curator rickie Solinger. The exhibit portrays african americans utilizing economic, cultural and recreational opportunities created by President Theodore roosevelt’s “new Deal” legislation — programs like work relief and job training, literacy and educational advancement, health care, political organizing, the arts, and housing — to claim their status as dignified persons and citizens, and in some respects laying foundations for the Civil rights Movement. The selection of 1930s era photographs depict the evolving role of african americans in Depression-era america, and additional display cases highlight how other minorities experienced american life in the Great Depression of the 1930s, among them Hispanics, asian-americans, native americans, and women. The exhibit is made possible by grants from the new jersey Council for the Humanities and the new jersey State Council on the arts/Department of State. It is free and open to the public. — Ray Schweibert

‘A Different Kind of Fix” (A&M/Octone)
Oceanville’s noyes Museum of art is currently running an exhibit of sculpture by two world-reknowned regional artists: Katherine Stanek and Julia Levitina: Of Myths, Metal and Mortar, which kicked off jan. 13 and runs through april 22. While Levitina, born in Odessa, ukraine and now living in Philadelphia, sculpts figures and animals in terracotta and bronze, Stanek’s work is a bit more unusual, utilizing an innovative use of materials, including various cements, aggregates and pigments that she has developed herself. as a noyes press release states: “In her unique process [Stanek] uses destruction as a vehicle for creation.” Stanek, who has been recognized in the magazine of the national Sculpture Society for her work, and Levitina, both sculpt, cast and finish their own work, giving a personal touch to each piece. Together the pair has exhibited their works around the world, from Turkey to the ukraine, and Paris. an opening reception at the noyes with the artists in attendance is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 3, from 5-8pm. For more information visit noyesmuseum.org. a visit to Stanek’s Web site shows off her intense work in photos and video. She will appear at the noyes again on March 1, to discuss her work process in an open-to-the-public event called “Living Materials; More Than a Medium.” — JS
Although North London band Bombay Bicycle Club’s latest album was just released in the U.S., it’s been included on many Best of 2011 year-end lists, since the melodic, adventurous and guitar-driven album was released in the U.K. in September 2011. The quartet’s fourth proper album is a bit more dance oriented than BBC’s prior albums, leaving most of the acoustic ambiance from its prior album Flaws (2010) in favor of a sort of new millennium montage of prog-rock, chamber rock, freak folk and melody-driven indie rock. Fans of bands such as Vampire Weekend, Animal Collective, Radiohead and even Sigur Ros should dig the vibes here. Electronic music fans should also dig A Different Kind of Fix. — Jeff Schwachter

HE HAILSTORM OF HOOPLA around the Miss’d America Pageant has been tremendous since the hilarious drag-queen pageant/charity fundraiser/ Miss America spoof recently returned to the resort, having gone into hibernation for five years after its initial 1991-2004 run. Now the pageant is entrenched in a weekend-long lineup of festivities hosted by Caesars Entertainment and entitled Out in AC that spans several venues and casino properties from Friday night through Sunday, Jan. 20-22. “Caesars Entertainment is extremely proud to play host to the fourth annual Out in AC Weekend,” says Jennifer Weissman, regional vice president of marketing for Caesars Entertainment. “Every year these uniquely tailored events bring in new guests ready to experience Atlantic City in a whole new open light. Out in AC Weekend is all about diversity, pride and, of course, having a little fun.” “Harrah’s took the first step in marketing to the gay and lesbian community with their Out in AC weekend, and Trump Entertainment soon followed with Drag Queen Bingo,” says Larry Sieg, president of the Greater Atlantic City GLBT Alliance, and senior director of marketing for the Atlantic City Convention and Visitors Authority. “These initial efforts yielded great results and people started to take a look at Atlantic City once again as a destination to consider for a great getaway. Resorts then stepped up to the plate with the largest investment to the gay and lesbian community when they hired the first director of LGBT marketing, and opened the first gay nightclub in an Atlantic City casino. Each of the casino corporations are active members of the Alliance, and have vowed to market together to increase gay and lesbian visitors to Atlantic City.” The pre-Miss’d America parties start Friday night (Jan. 20) at the Night Fever nightclub at Resorts, 8-10pm, and include special performances by Miss’d America 2010 Michelle Dupree and reigning Miss’d America 2011 Kitty Hiccups. There will be complimentary appetizers, a cash bar and a DJ ($10). On Saturday, The Pool at Harrah’s will again host the pre-Miss’d America Wet Wild and Wonderful Loft Party, which will be emceed by drag queen/actor/costume designer/improv comic Bianca Del Like us:

Rio (real name Roy Haylock). It will feature special themed cocktails, male gogo-dancers, DJ Michael DeCero spinning club music, and promoter/adult film star Gunner de Medici. Admission is free and you must be at least age 21 to attend. “I’m very much looking forward to visiting Atlantic City,” says de Medici, who will also be in attendance during Saturday night’s post party at the Pro Bar at Resorts. “Atlantic City and its people treat me very well by rolling out the red carpet every time I visit. I’ve been involved since the beginning of its recent renaissance in the gay community, and am so impressed with how gay-friendly clubs have embraced the gay community and all its activities.” The Pro Bar party will start 10:30pm Saturday (or roughly after the Miss’d America Pageant ends) and will go well into the wee hours. It will feature de Medici, singer Erika Schiff, DJ Sin Morera and soul/R&B singer Martha Wash who, as one half of the Weather Girls (along with Izora Armstead), recorded the international hit “It’s Raining Men” in 1982. The Pro Bar party is also $10 per person. On Sunday, Jan. 22, the Out of Control Brunch and Bingo shindig will take place at The Ballroom at Harrah’s from 11am3pm. Admission is $40 and will include a delectable brunch buffet, signature Bloody Marys and Mimosas, and the opportunity to win big at a festive bingo event hosted by Bianca Del Rio, Sandy Beach, Mortimer and other fun-loving drag divas. Visit outinac.com or acglbt.org for more. “As a founding member of the Greater Atlantic City GLBT Alliance, we realized that Atlantic City had not been on the radar screen for the gay and lesbian traveler for quite some time,” says Sieg. “Along with the Atlantic City Convention & Visitors Authority and some business members of our organization, we recognized the need to reach the gay and lesbian traveler and highlight all of the amenities that Atlantic City has to offer. “With great shopping, dining, entertainment and spas, it was a natural fit for this untapped market segment. We hope to continue to work together to bring future events to the city that will once again put Atlantic City on the map as a fun, welcoming and safe destination for the LGBT community.” n

Turning The Tables On Nightlife
VER SINCE HE RETURNED TO HIS Atlantic City roots more than two years ago, Don Marrandino has been an outspoken critic of the costs of doing business at Boardwalk Hall. Other community and business leaders have quietly complained about the costprohibitive union contracts at the hall over the years. But now, the eastern division president of global gaming giant Caesars Entertainment is turning up the heat. He’s threatening to pull his company’s shows and sporting events out of the building. “The only way you can fix it is not to book shows [at Boardwalk Hall], and I’m getting close to that point,” he said bluntly during a recent interview. “I get on my soap box every time I talk about ... the union contracts and how unreasonable they are there. If they were reasonable, we would be able to afford to do more shows there.” After the former Convention Hall underwent a $90 million renovation 11 years ago, Caesars Entertainment — which owns Caesars Atlantic City, Harrah’s Resort, Showboat and Bally’s — has been the most frequent tenant of the venue, which contains a 12,500-seat arena and a 3,500-seat ballroom. The company has regularly presented some of the biggest concerts the city has ever seen by world-class artists ranging from Paul McCartney to Barbra Streisand and sporting events including championship boxing matches, all-star tennis tournaments and minor league hockey games. Last year alone, Caesars Entertainment presented more than a dozen boxing matches, shows and concerts at Boardwalk Hall. Four fights were televised on HBO, two on Showtime and two figure-skating tribute shows aired on NBC. “It was like a big commercial for Atlantic City,” said Marrandino, 52, who was born in Atlantic City and spent the first decade of his casino career working on the Boardwalk before moving to Las Vegas, where he spent 20 years climbing the corporate casino ladder. Last year, the owner of the National Hockey League’s New Jersey Devils did five minor league hockey games in the hall and complained about the union fees. “He said it was more economical to do hockey in New York than it is in Atlantic City,” Marrandino said. “That’s a big problem.” Caesars Entertainment has already committed to presenting the American Hockey League all-star game in Boardwalk Hall on Jan. 30, which Marrandino believes will attract between 7,000 and 8,000 to town on a Monday night. And two weeks ago, the company announced a March 29 Boardwalk Hall concert by Van Halen. Like us:
facebook.com/ACWeekly
Beyond that, Marrandino won’t say whether he’s committed to any more shows at the hall. The union situation there needs to be addressed immediately, he said, because the ramifications of his company pulling out of the venue would be serious. “When that hall’s busy, the whole Boardwalk and [the city] is busy,” he said. “Not just casinos, but the merchants, the restaurants, the bars. Everything turns up a notch.” The events at the hall — most of them presented by Caesars, but also a spot concert by Borgata and other promoters — have combined to make Boardwalk Hall the topgrossing venue of its size in the world for the past four years. Whereas Boardwalk Hall was once booked almost as an afterthought by entertainers looking to pick up an extra night of work after a tour had been organized, it’s now being routinely added to first-run itineraries. “When [artists] are touring, there are 40 major markets you can go to and be assured you have enough of a population and venue size to do well,” Marrandino said. “Now, Atlantic City makes it 41.” Marrandino, who is also the chairman of the city’s new private marketing arm known as the Atlantic City Alliance (ACA), said Atlantic City is positioning itself as the destination resort it needs to be in order to weather competition for the gaming and leisure dollar that’s coming regionally from Pennsylvania, New York, Delaware and Maryland, all of which now have some form of casino gaming. Several months ago, the ACA introduced Liza Cartmell as its first CEO. Cartmell will have $30 million a year to spend on marketing the resort over each of the next five years in an effort to show potential visitors that Atlantic City has much more to offer than slot machines and table games. “I think [the media] gives the town a lot of body shots,” Marrandino said. “But if you look at ... the number of shows we had at all the [casinos] and Boardwalk Hall, and the Dave Matthews Band [Caravan at Bader Field], I don’t know of any city in the country, not even Las Vegas, that has the variety and number of shows that we had here [last] year. And we don’t get enough credit for that for some reason.” n

Poker Lowdown News on tournaments and other action in area casino poker rooms by Mike Pritchard
I
T WAS PRETTY BIG NEWS FOR Atlantic City last week when it was announced that a 40-month streak of declining gambling revenues had been broken. But looking over the numbers, it seems that the streak buster was slot play, not table games, and unfortunately, not poker revenues. The fact that December 2010 was also a snowy mess and a horrible month for the casinos while December 2011 was snow free (and had an extra weekend day over the previous year) also played a factor. For December poker revenues, they were respectable enough, but down over November. The Borgata, for example, far and away the big dog for casino poker in Atlantic City, took in $1.826 million at the poker tables in December, down about $375,000 from November, according to figures released by the state Division of Gaming Enforcement. Of course, in November, the Borgata held its Fall Poker Open, one of its five “opens” each year. But compared to December 2010, that’s an about $300,000 bump. Look for an even better return for the Borgata in January as the Borgata Winter Poker Open is underway as of Wednesday (Jan. 18). Harrah’s Resort, which holds its annual World Series of Poker circuit event in December, brought in just under $900,000 in poker revenues for the month. That’s about $90,000 less than in December 2010. Still, the WSOP Circuit is a great deal for the casino as it nearly doubled the poker take over November. Most of the other rooms in the city were down, including the Taj Mahal, which still seems to be struggling to get back the level of play it enjoyed for so long in the city. In December 2010, the casino brought in $850,000 from poker, which dropped to just under $700,000 in 2011. The Tropicana, Caesars and Bally’s saw small drops in revenue (though Caesars was about $50K). One bright spot, however, was at the Showboat, which took in about $186,000, a $30K increase over 2010. Showboat’s play is the smallest in the city, but still, a bump is a bump. And in November, when the casino offered a House of Blues Poker Open, the casino topped $200,000. It just proves what we’ve always said, playLike us:

ers like special tournaments and promotions. In the end, poker revenue was relatively flat between the two years, just redistributed some (with Borgata getting more action, as usual). All this shows that table games are still taking a hit in the city from the increased competition in Pennsylvania, Delaware and New York. The total revenues were up 4.6 percent in December. Slot machine revenue was up 8.3 percent, to $174.1 million, while table-game revenue decreased by 4.3 percent, to $72.5 million. And from now on the poker pie in Atlantic City gets smaller. The Golden Nugget actually took in a little more than $8,000 in poker revenue in December after opening its new 20-table room just before Christmas. Remember, the Nugget is the former Trump Marina, which had no poker room. Still, eight grand doesn’t exactly tell a tale of a mob scene checking out the new room, but it was kind of a soft opening with little advertising during arguably the slowest week of the year for the city. And the room is getting some good early reviews for luxury. There’s a good chance that the Nugget will make a bigger splash in January as word gets out. And then, in May — or even sooner? — comes the Revel poker room, which may prove to be a game changer. And in some more news, one of the most interesting promotions run during the Borgata Winter Poker Open (which again started Jan. 18) is the Borgata’s Leader Board promotion, which takes into account play in all of the open’s tournaments. Players are automatically entered into the leader board by simply playing in events. The Borgata uses a points formula based on the total event entries a player makes, the buy-in amount of the tournaments and where the player finishes in the tournaments. You might think the leader board favors the winners of the big events, but actually, a player who does well in several events, regardless of size, has the best chance of winning when it’s all over. The winner of the leader board wins a seat at the championship event of the next Borgata Open, usually a $3,500 buy-in (in this case it’s the spring open). Prizes are awarded to the other top finishers. n

Nanking at Bally’s blends influences from Thailand, India and China. By Frank Gabriel
I
Ahi tuna salad recipe. He was happy to oblige that the taste and texture resulted from using honey, rather than more commonly employed sugar. Next up was something from the exact opposite end of the culinary spectrum, Mumbai-style chili chicken. shards of poultry were doused in a hot brown sauce, along with scallions, sweet red and green peppers, smoky cayenne chiles plus plenty of both ginger and coriander. while not quite as explosive as indian vindaloo, this rich, peppery blend did everything but raise the ambient temperature in the room. The chicken was tender, cooked quickly at very high heat to produce a lovely sear of caramelization.
Next up were a pair of steamed items from the dim sum portion of the menu. for those unfamiliar, dim sum is a traditional Chinese dining style where carts filled with bite-size items are wheeled about the room and vended tableside. a sort of asian predecessor to tapas, dim sum is often a weekend brunch, familial event. Both of our samples were dumplings, which generally constitute the greatest part of any respectable dim sum establishment’s offerings. The first, snow crab and chive, brought six thick little bundles of savory seafood, wrapped within a fairly sturdy skin. These were like large ravioli, especially when compared to the shrimp cashew
shumai. Petite and intricately shaped, the shumai — literally meaning “too cook and sell” in Chinese — more closely resembled tiny beggar’s purses crafted from crepe batter. Both were expertly formed by gentle hands and presented in bamboo baskets. Very cool. My entrée, the Mongolian lamb, originally prepared on metal shields by some of the fiercest warriors the world has ever seen, more than lived up to that heritage. wok fried with peppers and scallions in another intense, ginger-laden sauce, it was just ideal for the bitter coldest night in nine months. My dining partner went with a house specialty, Phuket Bay pomfret, a fish native to Thailand. Presented whole, it was then carefully deboned by our graceful server, Maria. The round-shaped fish had been marinated with lime and spices. it was plated atop fragrant red sauce heavily dosed with basil and ginger. The pomfret’s flesh, white and firm, was akin to a stronger-flavored snapper or mahi. desserts were a classic cheesecake with fresh blueberries and green tea sauce and another chef’s own creation, banana egg rolls. Presented in four, bias-cut pieces the crisp pastry housed soft melting slices of miniature bananas, smooth and creamy. we suggest you end a meal here with traditional Thai-style iced coffee — strong french roast enhanced via sweetened condensed milk and cardamom essence — it’s one of few places locally to obtain this magic elixir of a beverage. n

f your New year’s diNiNg resolutions include seeking out divergent, exciting, healthful food, all of the above may be found at Nanking, Bally’s latest entry in the casino dining sweepstakes. Tucked away in the casino’s sixthfloor restaurant row, Nanking’s wide exterior façade settles down into a cozy, narrow space bathed in warm red and black tones. The cuisine, as staffers eagerly explained, is asian fusion combining Thai, indian and the spice palette of Chinese cookery. The result is a marvelous, well-integrated confluence, not a mishmash of confused, ill-fitting elements as often derails other “fusion” fare. under the direction of Nepalese-born chef Krishna Bhandari — a 20-year veteran who previously worked in Thailand, Hawaii and southern California — the kitchen sells plates that are as artful as they are delectable. Like our first appetizer, crispy lotus. sliced vertically, the root portions of these aquatic flowers possess a natural pinwheel shape, instant eye appeal. adding further intrigue, the dozen halfdollar sized coins were lathered in a fluorescent pink-red liquid that practically screamed upon delivery. once sampled, a sensational sweet and sour sauce was revealed, the equal of any we’ve ever sampled. Thick, without becoming gelatinous, it danced around our tongues, complimenting the natural crunch and tang of the exotic lotus. we were so bewitched by this that we asked the chef about his

Miss’d America Pageant
Where: Boardwalk Hall Ballroom, A.C. When: Saturday, Jan. 21, 8pm How Much: $35-$100
THE CONTESTANTS & JUDGES By Tamara deMent
T’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN. Atlantic City’s tradition of pageantry continues with an evening of talent, poise, and eloquence in the third annual Miss’d America Pageant. This revered and glamorous ritual originated in the 1990s at the now-defunct Studio 6 nightclub as a parody of the Miss America Pageant, which also famously took place — through 2004 — in the city the same weekend. The drag-queen event occurring the Sunday after Miss America Pageant was a positive and glamorous means to raise funds for various GLBT charities as well prolong the stay of tourists, explains Larry Sieg, the president of the Atlantic City GLBT Alliance. “It was an opportunity to raise money for GLBT charities as well as to extend the stay of those people coming in for Miss America,” says Sieg. “[The event would get tourists] to stay over another night and eat in the restaurants, go to the bars and so forth.” But the Miss’d America pageant wasn’t just for the city’s visitors it was also for locals who had been working during the Miss America Pageant. “All the people that worked on the Miss America Pageant never got to see it,” says present Miss’d America pageant director, Mark Dahl, who also works at Resorts Casino Hotel, with the property’s director of LGBT nightlife, Joel Ballesteros. “The costume people, the hair people, everyone that was working on Miss America put this together, so they could have their own pageant to Watch,” adds Dahl. “That’s why they called it Miss’d America, because you missed the pageant.” But this pageant tradition, which grew to be as famed as the actual Miss America Pageant itself, fell into dormancy in 2005, when the Miss America Pageant left Atlantic City. It was eventually revived, however, in 2010 by the Greater Atlantic City GLBT Alliance. This year, the Miss’d America Pageant returns in force to Historic Boardwalk Hall on Saturday (Jan. 21) and will seek out that special contestant that will become the next toast of the LGBT community. “[The pageant is] a very large undertaking for a group made up entirely of volunteers,” Dahl says. “Right now, it’s crunch time.” But never the less, organizers are promising a night of absolute splendor. “It’s pageantry at its finest,” says Dahl.
South Carolina and Florida. “We’re reaching contestants of a much broader base,” he adds. And with more applicants comes more versatile and higher quality performances. Among the 14 drag artists and female impersonators in the running is renowned performer Jason Cozmo, who will be representing the Jersey Shore region. Cozmo, who was born and raised in Salt Lake City, has recently moved to Atlantic City to join the cast of the hit show Believe - Divas in a Man’s World, which has had a long-running engagement at Resorts, and is slated to continue through Feb. 27. Unlike drag artists, who perform using their own stage-personas, Cozmo has appeared on stage as many famous figures including, Liza Minnelli, Dolly Parton (see cover), Lucille Ball, Bette Midler, Marilyn Monroe, as well as fictional characters like Snow White. “I love what I do so much,” says Cozmo. “I love performing, I love my characters. I take it so seriously and so personally.” But entering the pageant as an impersonator rather than a drag artist is a “risk” because of its novelty. Impersonation is not “common” for pageants, says Cozmo who has mixed feelings about the competition aspect of the event. “But,” says Cozmo, “it’s for charity and maybe it’s my time.” n

“The biggest difference [this year is] we will have world-class entertainment.” This year different properties in town will hold related events and parties aimed at attracting folks in town for the pageant. Caesars Entertainment, for instance, will be hosting its fourth annual Out in AC weekend of GLBT themed events (see p. 10 for details). Coming off of a two-year win streak as far as success goes, this year’s Miss’d America Pageant will again feature host Carson Kressley (of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy fame), as well as a performance by former Weather Girls member Martha Wash, who is expected to sing the group’s hit “It’s Raining Men.” Erika Schiff, who has also performed previously at the Miss’d America Pageant, is also scheduled to sing and dance. According to Sieg, the 14 contestants, who were announced last week (see sidebar) were selected from a very large pool of entries, from various states. With over 25 submissions, this was the first year the pageant ever had to narrow down contestants, according to Dahl. “Obviously, the word about the pageant and the quality of the pageant is getting out there in the entertainment community,” explains Sieg. “The first year we did it [in 2010], it was mostly contestants from New York, New Jersey and Philadelphia. Now, we’ve reached as far as Kentucky,
Gusty Winds (Daniel Alita) – New York City resident who has performed as Gusty for more than 16 years. Sabel Scities (Timothy Byars) – Sunnyside, New York’s Sabel has traveled across the United States and held the title of Miss Fire Island in 2010. Epiphany Get Paid (David Calen) – A New Yorker from California who has worked all over the country and travels to Europe to perform each year. Jason CoZmo (Jason Cozmo) – Originally from Salt Lake City, Jason was privileged to work with Liza Minnelli in the off-Broadway production of My Big Gay Italian Wedding. Navaya Shay (Thom Gait) – A Philadelphian who can currently be seen performing shows for Philadelphia’s OutFest and as a Dollstar at Voyeur Night Club. Juliza Alezae (Alejandro Giordano) – Wharton, New Jersey’s Juliza is a full-time beautician and make-up artist and has competed in many pageants. Brenda Dharling (Brandon Glasgow) –New York City’s Brenda was a principle dancer for Philadanco and has performed in numerous shows and competitions. Bootsie LeFaris (Justin Keller) – This southern belle from South Carolina is a drag queen who has been trained as a dancer and musical theater performer. Chantel Reshae (Robert Martin) – Born in Ames, Iowa, this entertainer has been the show choreographer for the Parliament House in Orlando, Fla., for more than 10 years. Victoria “Porkchop” Parker (Victor Parker) – Born in Anderson, S.C., Victoria has traveled the country and entertained in over 40 states, including TV appearances and more than 100 pageants. Lady Marisa (Anthony Sabato) – An IT engineer working for a data communications company in her home state of New Jersey when not impersonating celebrities. Tasha Salad (Scott David Sims) – This marketing director is a southern-fried Kentucky diva. Logan Hardcore (Logan Slaughter) – Logan is a New Yorker who does drag full time and enjoys going to different cities to perform. Shi-Queeta-Lee (Jerry VanHook) – This Washington, DC veteran actor has credits including the films Ca$h Money and XXX-2, as well as TV shows such as HBO’S The Wire. The judges for the 2012 pageant include Mark Segal, publisher of the Philadelphia Gay News; Ryan Nickulas, TV personality, The A-List New York; TJ Kelly, TV personality, The A-List New York; Annika Bruggeworth, equestrian, former Playboy Bunny, owner of Premier Show Horse; Jeffrey Wilson of Esquire; Michael Musto of The Village Voice; Hedda Lettuce, stage and movie personality; Bianca Del Rio celebrity drag personality; Diane Mitchell, from the Mike & Diane Morning Show on 95.1WAYV FM. n

Residents’ Response to Tourism District Robust Since the CRDA established options for public input, the Atlantic City Tourism District has seen a strong show of support and constructive commentary. By Ray Schweibert
A
s detailed in the Jan. 5 Atlantic City Weekly, a state-mandated Master Plan that outlines atlantic City’s proposed tourism district was given a Feb. 1 deadline by Gov. Chris Christie, one year to the date he signed the legislation designed to make the resort a safer and more attractive place to visit. to help achieve that goal, the Casino Reinvestment development authority (CRda, which oversees the district) hired international real-estate planner Jones lang lasalle, the California-based urban planning firm Jerde Partnership, and the locally based Birdsall engineering and hill Wallack law firm. Recognizing that a.C.’s year-round residents are perhaps most likely to be impacted by all the changes, the CRda also reached out for public input in the form of an online survey (go to RevitalizeaC.com) and by public forums that afford residents the opportunity to make tourism district suggestions. three public meeting were initially scheduled, but so successful were the first two that a third was added (held Jan. 18 at the a.C. Convention Center). the final public meeting will be thursday, Jan. 26, at 7:30pm in the Our lady star of the sea cafeteria (2652 atlantic ave.). “the success of the master planning process depends on the input of stakeholders with an interest in atlantic City,” says CRda executive director John Palmieri. “We are encouraged by the overwhelming interest the public has demonstrated in being involved in this process.” CRda deputy director susan ney thompson
gave a PowerPoint presentation during a Jan. 9 public meeting at the Venice Park United Methodist Church, which included architectural renderings of what areas encompassed by the tourism district could look like when rejuvenated. the district roughly covers all territory from the Boardwalk to atlantic avenue, the Convention Center and the Walk areas, Gardner’s Basin and the casino marina district, and Bader Field. “the team has been working together to develop some broad concepts, and with [public] input we are going to be refining those concepts and putting them before the [CRda] board on February 1,” says thompson “Your comments are very important to us.” “When you look at what we need to do to generate tourism and solidify some of the development, it’s very important that we focus on the Boardwalk area, and we look to some of the things that have worked at Bader Field recently, most notably the music festival that happened last summer [the three-day dave Matthews Band Caravan] that brought 70,000 people to atlantic City, many of whom had never come here before. We’re suggesting that, for the next two years, we really strengthen that as a special-events and festival area, and we look to develop the waterfront by Bader Field’s edge with perhaps a jogging or bicycle path that can be used by the community. it’s a gorgeous piece of waterfront property.” Relevant to that was the news — announced during the Jan. 12 MBCa meeting by a.C. Mayor lorenzo langford — that five festivals, including the 2012 seafood Fest, will take place at Bader Field this summer.
Other ideas the CRda and its team are considering include placing corporate kiosks in strategic spots along the Boardwalk; revitalizing the south inlet area and adding new attractions, including a large wind sculpture, and creating an academic village near the forthcoming Revel casino; making the corridors between atlantic avenue and the Boardwalk and the ground levels of some casino properties more aesthetically appealing; and establishing better transportation throughout the district — perhaps with vehicles replicating the look of a.C.’s old trolleys. When opened to public comment, a.C. resident Karen Phillips andrews brought up a perpetual problem — lack of parking. thompson said that the issue is being given a high priority, and should see some immediate alleviation when the new 1,100space CRda parking garage opens soon at Mississippi and Baltic avenues. a.C. resident andrew anwaar Garrett asked if the district committee considered bringing more family-oriented activities to Bader Field, or perhaps creating a theme park with fun family options. he also pointed out that the dilapidated section of the Boardwalk by the south inlet has caused a popular bathing beach to be closed down. “We’re working with Revel right now to identify what areas they currently own [and] that piece of the Boardwalk that’s over the water at Caspian and Melrose [avenues] that’s falling apart, we’ll be taking that down,” says thompson, adding that the CRda is working with the army Corps of engineers to revitalize that general area of beach and Boardwalk.
“i think every effort should be made to bring the african american heritage Museum of southern new Jersey [founded by a.C. resident Ralph hunter, but located in newtownville] to atlantic City,” says Venice Park Citizen’s association president alma Johnson. “there needs to be a plan in place to revitalize Kentucky avenue,” says resident steve Young. “the vision of seeing Kentucky avenue alive is what a lot of people have been praying for. it’s an area that connects the community.” local attorney and a.C. surf school director tom Forkin brought up an interesting point. “We need to do something about the taxes here,” says Forkin. “Residents are being taxed out of their homes. i looked at the public safety budget, which is 55 percent of the city budget, and i believe that if the state is going to take over the tourism district and mandate that our public safety entities control it, then i believe the state should contribute a portion — if not at least half since the tourism district will take up about half the city — to the publicsafety budget, hence reducing the property taxes.” anyone interested in submitting constructive comments can continue to do so at RevitalizeaC.com. Responses and contact information will remain confidential, and survey participants can elect to receive more information and updates via e-mail or phone. n

5 Questions With Everlast I By Michael Pritchard
t’s not the easiest thing in the world to pin down the exact sound you’d expect to hear from everlast. sure, he’s a pure hip-hop artist whose group house of Pain set the world on fire in 1992 with the song “Jump around.”
or he’s a great social commentator with 1998’s “What it’s Like.” or he’s Whitey Ford, or a member of the supergroup La Coka nostra. or then he can be using a little video magic to duet on a version of “Folsom Prison Blues” with the late Johnny Cash. everlast brings all that to the house of Blues Party Pit Friday, Jan. 20, for a free, yes, free concert. everlast is promoting his new album Songs of The Ungrateful Living, which features a pretty solid first single, “i get By.” that is when he’s not doing shows on a house of Pain reunion tour or La Coka nostra. “i’m sort of just trying to find the right tour and filling in the gaps with shows at clubs and things,” he tells Atlantic City Weekly. Fortunately, atlantic City is filling one of those gaps. We caught up with everlast by phone from his home in Los angeles. You have a history of releasing free music on the Internet, especially with La Coka Nostra. Did you know that the show at HOB’s Party Pit was a free show? i don’t know if my management was aware of that, but i can’t say i had foreknowledge of that. But it doesn’t bother me at all. i mean it’s not exactly free for me. Whoever is sponsoring it is sponsoring it. But i am actually trying to pull off a few more of these so, you know, my management probably was involved. But it has been one of my goals to get some major sponsorships and do maybe some more grandiose free shows in the major cities. You know some old-school in the park for free concerts. old-school, but with bands you wouldn’t normally get to see unless you paid for it. You’ve said in interviews that you feel you’ve brought back much of your hip-hop sound on the new CD. How would you describe the album? at this point, it’s kind of like i have what i do. You know, beat-orientated, blues-driven, acousticky kind of music. You know folk, hip-hop, country, whatever you call it, i have what i do. on the last record [2008’s Love, War and the Ghost of Whitey Ford] i think musically what i tried to do was just to really sound different than any other record and experiment with sounds. and i think it is the most different record i’ve made. so it’s like going out and adventuring and learning some stuff and then coming home and applying it. and that’s how it is on this record. i went out and adventured on the last record and now i’ve come home and i’m applying that adventure to the tunes i got going on now. i mean the last record was the least hip-hop record i’ve done. even though there’s hiphop on it, i think the choices of instrumentation and the bells and the rings, i tried to go almost the Like us:

opposite of what my instinct would be. You’re latest single, “I Get By” is kind of reminiscent of “What It’s Like” in that it has a very pertinent and timely message for a lot of people who are struggling economically right now. How did that song come about? it kind of started with me and my buddy DJ Z-trip just messing around in the studio. We were throwing ideas around and he was like, “You should do a song about getting by.” and i was like, “You mean like a really uplifting kind of song?” and he was like, “nah, i mean barely getting by. that’s my kind of thing.” and it just stuck in my craw and then the right moment came and the lyrics just kind of happened. i just write things that mean things to me. i mean it has to touch me if i’m going to expect it to touch anybody else. i just try to find meaningful things to say and the most simple way to say them. You’re not trying to be too clever or outsmart people, you just want them to say, “oh yeah, me too.” In some of the promo stuff released to the media, they’re saying that you will be playing your entire catalogue of songs at this concert. I doubt that can happen, but ... oh man, that is definitely not happening with the whole catalogue! that’s a lot of records. i don’t know about that! [Laughs] that would be like a five-hour show. and for free, get out of here. But seriously i’m pretty confident that no one will be disappointed. Do you have any memories of Atlantic City from the times you’ve played hear before? honestly, it’s funny, but whenever i think of atlantic City, i think of one of the first times i was there. i went into the casino to play and i was playing blackjack. and i think i hit a 14 or something. and it was all old people at the table and i hit this 14 and i swear to god they all turned around and yelled at me [laughs]! and i was like, “What the hell is going on? What the fuck, it’s my money?” and they’re all like, “You fucked it up.” i realized it was a different kind of gambling. People were really burned. the seniors were not feeling it. But the thing about coming to all these towns is that you’re usually there for only one night. You never get to find out really where the best restaurant is. i mean where are the cool people and what’s the best club? You usually end up going where the security guard thinks the best place is. n
