s your wife or girlfriend still ticked off about that ab roller you gave her for a Valentine’s Day gift last year? If so, the Absecon Lighthouse — in all its 157 years of wisdom — has your back. On Friday, Feb. 14, Absecon Lighthouse is hosting “An Evening of Romance and Renewal,” during which couples are invited to take part in a group vow renewal ceremony by a non-denominational minister (Absecon Lighthouse’s executive director Jean Muchanic) in the lighthouse’s Keeper’s Cottage starting at 7pm, followed by a champagne toast afterward. A donation of $25 goes toward supporting the numerous programs and services the lighthouse provides annually. The event takes over for another that had been held at Boardwalk Hall every Valentine’s Day since 2008. And you don’t even have to be married to savor the romantic Valentine’s Day offerings of the Absecon Lighthouse! Its 228 steps will be open for climbing on Feb. 14 until 7:30pm, which provides a perfect way to set the mood (not to mention work up an appetite) for a romantic dinner on the town afterward. Regular hours are Thursday through Monday, 11am-4pm. The lighthouse — the tallest in the state, the third tallest in the nation, and one of the oldest in the nation (home to the first-ever Fresnel Lens, originally lit in 1857) — is located at 31 S. Rhode Island Ave. in Atlantic City. Visit abseconlighthouse.org or call 449-1360 for more.
Greek Dance Troupe at Wave Arts Garage Jan. 25 By Jeff Schwachter
T
he Noyes Arts Garage of Stockton College, located on the first floor of the Wave parking garage on Mississippi Avenue (at Fairmount), opened before the holidays last year and its 20 or so tenants, including an annex of the Noyes Museum and the African-American Heritage Museum, want you to know they are there. Some tenants have art studios where they do, sell and exhibit their works. Other shops, such as the Eco4u fair trade boutique, offer an array of different items hard to find anywhere else in the area. What the new Noyes endeavor lacks is a little live entertainment — a coffee shop is in the works. With that in mind, Stockton is bringing in a Greek dance troupe from Philadelphia on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2-5:30pm, to entertain patrons at the arts garage. The Pontian Society “Akritai” of Philadelphia will perform traditional Pontian Greek dance to live music and singing. About 25 performers in all will participate in the free show. Note: If you spend $25 or more at the arts garage, parking is free. For more information, call 626-3805.

his week sees the rerelease of two Michael Yonkers albums on Drag City/Galactic Zoo Disk. Who is Michael Yonkers, you ask? The legend of the reclusive Minnesota musician has been discussed on blogs and elsewhere since his previously unreleased proto-punk/noise rock Sire album from 1968, Microminiature Love was re-issued on Destjil (then Sub Pop) a decade ago. The albums out this week — Michael Lee Yonkers and Borders of My Mind (with Jim Woehrle) — offer a glimpse into Yonkers’ lo-fi, country-folk home recordings of the early 1970s. Both of the formerly private pressed albums are now available in their delightful home-spun glory, with phones ringing in the background, and even a rare recording of a kooky children’s song performed at a house party with children howling in the background circa 1971-’72. For fans of Michael Hurley, Tim Buckely, Bill Fay and the Holy Modal Rounders. — Jeff Schwachter
Sandra Day O’Connor Speaks at Stockton By Lori Hoffman
A
ssociate Justice Sandra Day O’Connor (retired), the first woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court, will be the inaugural speaker for The Pappas Visiting Scholar Series at The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey on March 24. This ticketed event will be free and open to the public and the Stockton community. Justice O’Connor was appointed to the Supreme Court by President Ronald Reagan in 1981, and served until 2006. She was a key swing vote in many important cases, including the upholding of Roe v. Wade. Justice O’Connor was awarded the nation’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, by President Barack Obama in 2009. Thomas Wilner, head of Shearman & Sterling’s International Trade & Investment Practice in Washington, D.C., will serve as moderator for Justice O’Connor’s 6pm presentation in the Sports Center. Stockton Trustee Dean Pappas and his wife, Zoe, established the Dean C. and Zoe S. Pappas Visiting Scholar Endowment Fund in 2012, to bring noted scholars and thought leaders speakers to Stockton for classes, workshops and public events. Pappas has said he underwent “a transformational experience” as an undergraduate college student at Dickinson College in 1961, when he heard the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. speak. “Until that point I was sort of drifting my way through college, but Dr. King’s message was very impressive,” said Pappas. “It made me start to think more seriously about my future. Basically, his message was to act responsibly. It was a moment that changed my life.” Information on ticketing will be available in the coming weeks. Tickets will be free, but access to seating must be prearranged. 652-1776; stockton.edu. see more online @

The 2014 Sixth Annual ACWeekly.com Reader’s Choice Nightlife Awards
L
ong before casino gaming — and of course way before the recent launch of online gaming in the resort town — Atlantic City was an East Coast hub of highquality, diverse entertainment. It takes many exceptional individuals to maintain a reputation for top-shelf nightlife options anywhere, but to support a standard of excellence for as long as Atlantic City has is truly a remarkable accomplishment. And as has been well documented, it has also become increasingly necessary for the resort to continue that standard of excellence with ever-growing competition for the gaming dollar elsewhere. For this reason, and just over six years ago, the idea was hatched to have Atlantic City Weekly’s readers pick their favorites in a number of local (inside the casinos and out)
nightlife categories — a means by which to pay tribute to all those in the nightlife and hospitality industry who work so hard to keep the ball rolling with celebrity DJs, live bands and lounge entertainment, and parties at some of the hottest clubs on the East Coast. This is why Atlantic City Weekly and acweekly.com are proud to announce this year’s winners in our 6th annual Reader’s Choice Nightlife Awards. Once again we plan to have a blast in honoring this year’s winners at Boogie Nights — Tropicana’ uber-popular ’70s and ’80s retro nightclub — on Thursday night, Jan. 23, when the awards ceremony will be held and the winners of each category announced (including runners up in some categories) — all followed by one of the biggest parties of the year starting at
8pm and open to the public. “We couldn’t be more excited about this year’s Nightlife Awards,” says Atlantic City Weekly editor Jeff Schwachter. “This project was created to celebrate the talented people who help make Atlantic City the unique, high-energy entertainment destination that it is. The awards bash has always taken place at the end of January, giving party people and nightlife-industry folks a great reason to come out in the middle of winter and party.” Readers voted on ACWeekly.com starting in the fall and ending Dec. 31, 2013. Categories include “Best Nightclub,” “Best Happy Hour,” “Best Casino Lounge Act,” “Best Club to Spot a Celebrity,” “Best Locals Bar,” “Best New Place to Party” and many more.
Here are this year’s winners and runner-ups: Best Bartender Male (Casino) Best Best Best

Paris Hilton to DJ at Pool T
with the domed, year-round swimming hole and party palace haven’t been released, sources said the Harrah’s gig will reportedly pay the socialite $100,000 per appearance. Hilton, who has hosted parties for the late-night crowd at The Pool in the past, will kick off her relationship with the casino on Feb. 1. She’ll be spinning music during an event titled “The Residency Begins: Paris Hilton’s Birthday Bash and Live DJ Set.” The birthday celebration is a few weeks premature; Hilton turns 33 on Feb. 17. She’ll be aided and abetted during her DJ sets by DJ Hollywood, an old-school, 59-year-old hip-hop DJ, and other spinners from Beatclan, one of the top DJ agencies in Las Vegas. Hilton came under criticism recently when she called herself one of the world’s top five DJs spinning at electronic dance music clubs. She clarified her statement to the Wall Street Journal when she told the newspaper and its companion TV show that she should have said she was one of the top five DJs when it comes to her salary. Hilton said she actually gets more than the reported $100,000 she’ll earn each time she spins at Harrah’s. She recently spent a two-month residency gig performing at Amnesia, one of the top EDM clubs in Ibiza, Spain, where her nightly gig didn’t begin until 4am. Hilton, who also fancies herself a recording artist, released a single in October in collaboration with rapper Lil Wayne titled “Good Time.” The song was produced by Afro Jack and will be included on Hilton’s forthcoming but untitled LP, which is due to drop sometime during the first quarter of 2014. The album features collaborations with RedOne, Snoop Dogg and Flo Rida. “I’m working with so many talented and awesome people for my album and can’t wait to share more of the music,” Hilton recently told Rolling Stone. “For me, [‘Good Time’] is so catchy and fun the way it moves from pop to a true dance number.” Hilton won’t say what she enjoys

more – working as a recording artist or DJing. But spinning music in front of 10,000 people – which she claimed was the size of the crowd during her gig in Ibiza — was clearly a rush. “I love performing and I love entertaining people, and with DJing I get to do both,” she said. Hilton reportedly did so well spinning in Ibiza that the club reportedly signed her to a long-term gig that pays big bucks. Because she’s fairly new to the DJ world, it might take Hilton some time to match the annual take of established spinners like Calvin Harris, who reportedly made $46 million last year, or Tiesto, an Atlantic City nightclub regular who raked in a cool $32 million. But if she continues to make $100,000-plus a night every time she spins at Harrah’s Resort and other locations, she could give a fellow Harrah’s resident EDM star, DJ Pauly D, a run for his money. Published reports indicate Pauly — the former Jersey Shore star — earned $12 million last year. Pauly D is now in the third year of a residency gig with Harrah’s. *** Speaking of residency gigs, it isn’t often that a group best known for working casino lounges signs a residency gig. But that’s what the party band Don’t Call Me Francis recently did at Revel Casino. The band will kick off its five one-night “residency” gigs — which are free — Feb. 14 with sets in The Social, the sweet little performance venue located smack in the middle of the casino floor. Together for 25 years, DCMF has been playing the casino lounge circuit for years and is one of the most requested bands in the Delaware Valley. DCMF include musicians whose credits include working with Tower of Power; Blood, Sweat and Tears; Pretty Poison; Michael Bolton; Paula Abdul; Robert Hazard; Chicago; K.C. and the Sunshine Band; Gloria Estefan and The Stylistics. In addition to the Valentine’s Day kickoff, other DCMF gigs are scheduled for April 5, May 2, Sept. 5 and Oct. 31 at The Social. ■

he Hilton name, globally known for its status in the hospitality world, will be returning to Atlantic City. But not the way you might think. Rather than decorating the top of a building, as it did when a nowclosed casino operated as a Hilton for about 15 years, this Hilton name will appear in more tropical surroundings. Celebrity heiress and former reality TV star Paris Hilton, who’s famous for ... well, for being famous, has signed a residency deal to be a DJ at the popular Pool After Dark at Harrah’s Resort. burger accompanied by goat cheese and caramelized onions. The burger itself was glorious. Two-and-half-fingers thick, juicy and pink— as ordered —topped with warm, melting chevre and sweet red onions. A sizeable pile of sizzling-hot shoestring fries, bearing all the hallmarks of fresh-cut, crowded out the rest of the serving platter. In the interest of complete disclosure, customers may substitute either cole slaw or mixed greens for fries, we just can’t imagine why anyone would. Let’s return to that burger, shall we? Seventeen different toppings — sundry stuff like onion straws, sautéed mushrooms, seven cheeses, guacamole and even macand-cheese — are listed. As a result, con-

one facing out on The Quarter (in the location that had been Red Square). Our dining partner opted for pecan-crusted salmon with mashed potatoes and sautéed spinach. The rectangular fillet was angled atop a mound of creamy potatoes, gently wilted greens alongside. Plenty of fat, sweet nuts finished the presentation, candy-like and clinging to the vibrant orange fish. Both the quality of the initial product and its admirable preparation bear witness that the kitchen here is capable of much more than just casual fare. Other entrée choices include center-cut filet, roasted chicken, pork tenderloin and braised short ribs. Despite this, our main event on this evening was clearly my prime
structing your own personal version is thoroughly encouraged. And of course, Broadway is the home of the biggest, baddest burger we know of regionally; The Hub Cap, named for its resemblance to that circular car part, tips the scale at a leviathan 24 ounces. Having personally consumed one-pounder patties with ease in prior encounters at other establishments, we eagerly anticipate getting to know The Hub Cap better in the near future. Alternative sandwiches are a barley-andlentil burger, an Italian burger with grilled prosciutto and mozzarella, turkey BLT burger with avocado, braised short rib or jumbo lump crab cake. From a two-pronged list of sides titled ”Mack It” and “Mash It” we sampled smoky short rib mac. The steak house size portion provided more than enough for two to partake, and the inherent richness of pasta, sauce and meat was nearly overwhelming. Think of an adults-only version of childhood favorite Beefaroni and you’ll be on the right track. Additional “Macs” offer add-ons of either apple wood bacon or lobster. “Mash” — either Yukon gold or sweet potato — is available loaded with a choice of brown gravy, sour cream and chive, bacon, cheddar, garlic or cinnamon/candied walnuts. From a recently revised sweet menu, we tried a trio; crème brulee, chocolate cake and raspberry cheesecake. The brulee is a standout, creamy, dense and pudding-like in texture. ■

s part of Tropicana Resort’s recent Beer Week, new resident Broadway Burger Bar presented a brew-oriented dinner on Thursday, Jan. 16. Specifically, IPAs — India Pale Ales — were featured, a beverage of some historical import. We began with a house signature item, Bavarian pretzel. Normally served with a trio of dips, it was accompanied on this prixfixe menu by a deep pool of excellent cheddar/ale sauce. Presented hanging from a vertical device best described as a food coat rack, Philly’s favorite foodstuff was warm, puffy and plentiful. The molten cheese sauce, intense from the herbal nature of ale, never congealed during the time it took to finish the app. Pulled pork sliders brought a trio of overstuffed mini brioche rolls. Tumbling from their insides was tender, mildly spicy pig, properly cooked until rendered of all residual fat. The result was some of the very best pulled pork we’ve had regionally, rivaling the authentic creations of places like seasonal roadside gems Uncle Dewey’s in Mizpah or Somers Point’s Back Bay BBQ. Cobb, which of late has become our barometer for well-made bowls of salad, delivered a crunchy conglomeration of shredded iceberg, chopped bacon, diced tomato, cubed cucumber and avocado, hardboiled egg bits and shredded chicken, blended with potent bleu cheese dressing. Split tableside for us — a little nicety often lost on modern dining — by our welltrained waiter, the ingredients were bright and fresh, a pleasant reminder of warm weather on a frigid January evening. Broadway’s design itself is airy and charming; separate sections for formal seating and a swanky bar plus a pair of round, communal tables suitable for larger groups,

Spy Lite Time Chris Pine is latest actor to play Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com
W
hile Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit is being called a reboot of the Tom Clancy’s spy books, the notion that the films have been iconic and popular enough to be “re-booted” isn’t exactly accurate since the role has been played by four different actors since its excellent debut with Alec Baldwin in The Hunt For Red October (1990). This was followed by Harrison Ford twice Patriot Games (1992), Clear and Present Danger (1994) and the awful The Sum of All Fears (2002) starring Ben Affleck that killed off the series until now. The man who successfully took over as Captain Kirk in the Star Trek reboot, Chris Pine, plays Jack Ryan. His nemesis is revenge-minded Russian Viktor Cherevin, played by Kenneth Branagh, who also directs. In order to revive the dormant USA versus Russia Cold War, the plot centers around a terrorist plan to destroy the United States economy. Uh, didn’t we already do that to ourselves? Although there is a secondary plot involving a bomb in the financial district of New York that would kill many more people than the 2001 attack, the overall feel of the film is rather bland. When the suspense does kick in, in particular a daring raid to steal the economic particulars from Cherevin’s computer, the film gains some energy. However, those moments also tend to contrast with the less-than-exciting elements of the film. The rest of the supporting cast is much too A-list for the material, especially Kevin Costner as Ryan’s boss and Keira Knightley as Ryan’s girlfriend. As in most spy thrillers she is only around so she can be flung into the middle of the CIA danger zone and to act relieved when she finds out her fiancé is in the CIA and that’s the reason he has been so secretive, not that he’s having an affair. Most of this year’s episodes of the TV series The Blacklist are more engaging than Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit.

Foul-mouthed Meryl Meryl Streep playing the foul mouthed and mean spirited matriarch in August: Osage County, dropping the F-bomb in large quantities with Julia Roberts doing the same as her angry daughter, didn’t dissuade Academy members from giving her an 18th Academy Award nomination and one to Roberts to boot. Based on the hit Broadway play by Tracy Letts, who also wrote the film’s screenplay, to call this family with its numerous secrets and lies dysfunctional is an insult to families that are merely dysfunctional. We need to come up with a new word for the level of dysfunction in the Weston clan, but in the meantime we will just call them the most selfish and self-destructive family in the known universe. The performances are superb (joining Streep and Roberts are Ewan McGregor, Chris Cooper, Julianne Nicholson, Margo Martindale, Abigail Breslin, Juliette Lewis and Benedict Cumberbatch). This is a film that is hard to watch because of the hurricane of hatred that upends this family in the course of a few days, but it is worth the effort for its insights into what makes us ignore our common decency in the midst of such emotional upheaval. n

“[The show] is as dark as I am. [It’s] a rollercoaster of emotions. People told me they cried, they were mad, they laughed. They were sad. There are just so many emotions in that 90-minute period.” facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly
ack in May 2012, Mike Tyson was in Atlantic City for the resort’s first Multi-Cultural Heritage Festival, which included an All-Star Boxing Legends Gala at Resorts featuring dozens upon dozens of boxing greats, from fighters and coaches to promoters and fans. As soon as Tyson, always a huge supporter of Atlantic City, entered the Superstar Theater at Resorts with his mother-in-law (who is from Philadelphia) fans with cell phones and pens swarmed upon him as if he was doling out free tickets to his new autobiographical one-man show — Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth — which he was starting to perform in New York at the time. “Iron” Mike put his arms up around his head to protect himself from the crowd, which didn’t give him any room to move. It was so much, the former heavyweight champion had to exit the theater with his entourage surrounding him. “I’m a great fan of Atlantic City,” Tyson told Atlantic City Weekly at the time. “I started my career in Atlantic City.” During his first year as a pro fighter, in 1985, Tyson fought six times in Atlantic City and would continue to have big bouts in the resort in the following years. “Without being egotistical, for a moment in time, when [I] had that big fight with Michael Spinks, for one moment the eyes of the world were on Atlantic City,” Tyson said at the time. “And no one can ever take that away from Atlantic City.” Three decades ago Tyson’s goal was to become a boxing legend. In fact, as Tyson writes in his new acclaimed best-selling autobiography — a 580-word tome that was co-written with best-selling author (and one-time Bob Dylan fanatic) Larry “Ratso” Sloman (On the Road with Bob Dylan, Howard Stern: Private Parts and The Secret Life of Houdini) — also called Undisputed Truth (Blue Rider Press), after growing up in poverty in Brooklyn, being bullied as a child, growing up without a father and then turning to crime and drugs, he wound up in upstate New York. There, at a facility for juvenile offenders, Tyson met trainer Cus D’Amato. The legendary trainer who helped Floyd Patterson become a heavyweight champion and an Olympic gold medalist knew the first time he watched the teenaged Tyson spar that he was destined to become the heavyweight champion of the world. Today, at 47, Tyson’s days in the ring are over, and it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that his world has changed a great deal. And in his new book and one-man show — which debuts in Atlantic City for one night only at Caesars on Saturday, Jan. 25 — he talks all about it. The good, the bad, and the ugly. HBO premiered Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth in November 2013. The HBO Films program, directed by Lee, who partnered with Tyson from the beginning of the project, was filmed in New York during a July 2013 performance. A half year later, the HBO show,

the live show and the book have taken Tyson all across America performing and promoting. Along with dates in the States this year, Tyson will take his show abroad for several shows. Atlantic City Weekly had the pleasure of speaking with Tyson from his Nevada home shortly after this past Christmas. With his children in the background, Tyson sounds like a man at peace with himself. No more drugs or drinking. No more controversy. Happily married to his wife Kiki Tyson (who helped write the one-man show) and exploding with excitement about his new and very successful endeavors while remaining humble. And remaining adamant that he never raped the woman who accused him of doing so — Desiree Washington, in 1991 — a conviction that sent Tyson to jail for a few years until he was released early in 1995 on parole. Is that a dog in the background? That’s my daughter and my son. Don’t fight. Don’t fight. Milan, don’t hit him. Be nice. Did they have a good Christmas? Oh, they had a ball. In the past, in the ring or on TV interviews, there has always been someone with you. But with Undisputed Truth, you are alone on stage. Was that a scary proposition for you at first? When I first did it I had a rock band, I had a vocalist, I had a classy piano player. They had put me out there by myself and that was pretty crazy. How did Spike Lee approach you about ditching everything else and just having you on stage alone? He gave me a call and he said, ‘Let’s go to Broadway.’ We had a plan [at first] to go to a couple of hotels and after we did the hotels maybe we’d record [a show] and then do Broadway. But we ended up doing Broadway after the first two weeks. He wanted to do Broadway right away. And it was hailed by the critics. Know what else is really interesting? Even when they show it on HBO, on television, they still want me to tour all over the world. It has taken on a life of its own. Are you still having fun doing it? Absolutely. I want to do other things too. I want to do behind-camera, behind-the-scenes [work]. But it’s going to be tough because this thing has been hailed all over. I come back from doing it in Dubai and Australia and they continue to call. They [asked] me to come to England with the show, but they won’t let me come because I’m a felon. So why are you telling me to come here? You knew I was a felon before you asked me to come. Has the show changed or evolved at all? Every night I do it differently. Every
night I ad-lib and I do it different. What did you learn from Spike Lee working with him on the show? That I don’t need anyone. He taught me I don’t need anybody and that I can do this myself. Because before I needed the piano player, the rock band. ... I got really insecure standing up there by myself. This is really scary stuff. I needed those guys. So when he took those guys away I was really upset and angry. But he gave me the confidence that I could do this on my own. That was the best thing he ever did. When you first saw your show, on TV or beforehand, what did you think? My wife said it was beautiful, then they sent me the tape. I didn’t see the whole tape. When it came on television I saw it. ... When people see it they call me a comedian now. I’m not a comedian. I didn’t understand. I was in my kitchen and my friend walked into the living room and I’m listening to him. I hear a bunch of laughter. It’s a stand-up show, I think, but it is not a stand-up show at all, [it’s my show]. I wanted [my show] to be more of a drama and suspense. [When] people started laughing [during the show at first] I started getting unconformable. They took it as a comedy, but it is not a comedy. Some audiences don’t know how to react and just laugh sometimes because it’s easy. It is as dark as I am. There’s nothing special. That’s what I realized about me. I realized people never [like to] expose themselves. ... In my experience, I realized there is nothing special about me. Most people experience what I have experienced in life; that is why they watch the show. Except for being a 20-year-old heavyweight champion. Yeah, but there’s something else that might replace it. They might achieve something else in life. What should folks expect at the show? A rollercoaster of emotions. People told me they cried, they were mad, they laughed. They were sad. There are just so many emotions in that 90-minute period. Some of the emotions you have to have in you. Kanye West, 50 Cent, Susan Sarandon — they all came and saw it. Meg Ryan came. Donald Trump came. Eddie Murphy came. Charlize Theron and Stevie Wonder came. Just a whole cast of entertainers came. And you know who else came? Burt Young. That’s cool, from Rocky! Yeah, the driver. So many people came and people I didn’t even know came. Some people I couldn’t even talk to them — all my peers, so to speak. I’m very thankful. The people who know how hard it is to accomplish something, those people come along achieving a lot more than money. I am one of them. ■ see more online @

A Cold-front from Cali The Cold War Kids bring time-tested indie-rock to House of Blues at Showboat Jan. 25 By Ed Condran • feedback@acweekly.com

“We always favored the darker kind of music, like the kind the Velvet Underground made. But the thing is that we weren’t sure where we would be with this band. We were in that funny time of your life, when you’re in your 20s. We got together and tried to see where this would lead. One thing led to another. We made music, we toured and this band turned into our life. It’s been incredible.” and the band sounds more confident than ever. “I think we have some great chemistry,” Willett says. “I really like where we are.” Lonelyhearts, released in 2013, includes some of the catchiest and strongest Cold War Kids songs since the band’s 2006 debut Robbers & Cowards and that says a lot as that album’s four singles — “Hang Me Up to Dry,” “Hospital Beds,” “Hair Down” and “We Used to Vacation” have aged with a sort of indie grace over the past decade. New songs such as “Miracle Mile,” “Lost That Easy,” and “Water and Power” are full of tasty hooks.
And then there are such off-the-wall cuts as “Bottled Affection” and “Loner Phase,” which are propelled by keyboards and a drum machine. It’ll be curious how those songs translate under the lights. But the Long Beach, Calif., based band, which formed in 2004, has always been about its live shows, with its tunes typically made for concerts. The Cold War Kids, which also includes bassist Matt Maust and drummer Matt Aveiro, has always been a band of solid road warriors. “I think that’s always been so for us,” Willett says. “For us, being in the studio

he Cold War Kids moniker is about as incongruent as Sonic Youth. The Kids have grown up fast. That was evident after the release of their third album, Mine Is Yours, released in 2011. That polished project is much different than the band’s raw initial releases. The Cold War Kids’ songs have morphed from loose and rambling rockers to tunes with more direction and focus. “Any time a band makes some changes, people are, like, ‘What happened to the old band?,” vocalist-guitarist Nathan Willett tells Atlantic City Weekly. “You can’t please everyone. I think every band grows from album to album. You can’t help but morph somewhat. Maybe sometimes you morph quite a bit. You want to grow. At least you hope that’s the case. I think we’re always moving on. We don’t make the same album twice, let alone the same song twice.” The Cold War Kids, who will perform Saturday, Jan. 25, at the House of Blues at Showboat in Atlantic City, have added some tools to their enviable arsenal. The biggest with their latest (and terrific) album, Dear Miss Lonelyhearts, is guitarist Dann Gallucci. The former member of Modest Mouse and Murder City Devils adds power
is trying to capture what we do live. It all starts for us live on stage. We’ve always been a live band before we’ve been a studio band. I think that’s where we’re most comfortable. I think it’s a challenge any time you step in the studio to bring the energy that you have when you play live there. But I think we’ve done a pretty good job of it.” Expect the band to continue trying to reach another level. “We just want to get better and better,” Willett says. “That’s always been the goal for our band. We’re never satisfied. That’s just not the way we’re wired.” Willett had no idea what the Cold War Kids would become when the band formed in Long Beach. “It’s amazing that everything worked out the way it did,” Willett says. “Who knew this would be long term. We met through a group of friends in the Long Beach area, which is such a great place for music and musicians. We grew up with No Doubt and Sublime and there was so much punk and hardcore music. But the thing was that we weren’t into the sunny music that came out of Southern California. We always favored the darker kind of music, like the kind the Velvet Underground made. But the thing is that we weren’t sure where we would be with this band. We were in that funny time of your life, when you’re in your 20s. We got together and tried to see where this would lead. One thing led to another. We made music, we toured and this band turned into our life. It’s been incredible.” It hasn’t been easy, according to Willett. “People have different approaches to things,” Willett adds. “You just learn to deal with things and balance it all out. There’s been some bumps along the way, but we’re still together. We’re making music and we’re on the road. It’s been really good.” ■
