All grade-schoolers learned about the Civil Rights Movement and can recall, with varying degrees of detail, the courage and determination it took to battle racial discrimination by people like Dr. Martin Luther King jr., rosa Parks, Thurgood Marshall, the freedom riders and others. It is likely though, based on how America’s leisure time is consumed by the love of athletics, that the name Jackie Robinson is best recognized for smashing color barriers. Robinson’s entry into the Major Leagues of baseball ended six decades of black players being relegated to the Negro Leagues, and began a long road of racial torment along the way. And it would not have been enough to merely play well in the majors. Robinson would have to dominate to dispel the notion that blacks were not of whites’ athletic ilk, and he did, earning six straight All-Star selections (1949-’54) for the Brooklyn Dodgers in a 10-year Major League career. Those interested in learning more about this American hero should visit the Jackie Robinson Exhibit at the African-American Heritage Museum of Southern N.J. (661 Jackson Rd., Newtonville). Ralph Hunter Sr., president of the museum, acquired the exhibit through a donation last august. It was originally assembled in 1997 to mark the 50th anniversary of Robinson’s breaking into the majors. “I had to do a lot of restoration,” says Hunter. “There were 11 crates and the process was difficult and time consuming, but we are very excited and happy to have such an amazing exhibit.” On Saturday, jan. 28, a reception is scheduled from 2-4pm at the Martin Luther King Center in Newtonville to welcome the exhibit to the museum, which is open Tuesday through friday from 10am-4pm, and on Monday and Saturday by appointment. “I believe that after walking through the exhibit and viewing the videos, hearing the hurdles that Jackie overcame, the determination he possessed and the admirers he gathered along the way, it should inspire young people to never give up and to keep striving for that goal,” says Hunter. “no matter what stands in their way, keep on reaching out to achieve.” Call 704-5495 or visit aahmsnj.org. Admission is free, but donations are gratefully accepted. — Ray Schweibert
Stockton P.A.C. Warms Up The Winter Months
The southern new jersey shore area can be a great place to live with all the free beach concerts, shows and attractions. But in the bleak of mid-winter, the pickings do get a little slim. So it’s a great boost to people who like a good show that the Stockton Performing Arts Center presents a full slate of winter programs. That program starts Sunday with a concert by the bay-atlantic Symphony at 2pm. Traditionally the symphony starts its year with chamber music and this year features works by Mendelssohn and Antonin Dvorak, among other selections. The show is followed quickly by concert in the college’s new venue the Campus Center Theater by Steve Green & The Elevators, a six-piece rhythm powerhouse group that blends jazz, hip hop, funk, gospel, rock and Afro-Cuban sounds into a magical brew. On Saturday Feb. 4, the P.A.C. presents Theater a Go-Go, The Queen of Bingo. Part of the description of this comedy sketch performance is “The audience joins in the fun during the ‘Middle Bird Special’ — a real Bingo game where some lucky audience member wins a free 10lb. frozen turkey at every performance.” Other shows in the winter program include Philadanco Feb. 9, Michel Bell and concert pianist Catherine Matejka, feb. 12, The brubek Project feb. 27 and the Moscow Festival Ballet March 19. Can you say eclectic? — Mike Pritchard
On Etta James’ final studio album, The Dreamer, the late blues singer, who passed away Jan. 20 at 73, one of the greatest blues singers of all-time adds an extraordinary final notch to her legacy. “At Last,” her 1961 Chess Records classic, may be the most well-known song associated with James, but the erratic, deeply passionate and often uncontrollable artist delved into all sorts of music through her career, from R&B and rootsy blues to standards, pop, and even hard rock. While her 2006 album All the Way included Prince’s “Purple Rain” and John Lennon’s “Imagine,” The Dreamer features the Guns N’ Roses hit “Welcome to the Jungle,” in addition to 10 more tracks carried by James’ ever-mighty blues-singing attack, including Otis Redding’s “Cigarettes & Coffee,” Bobby “Blue” Bland’s “Dreamer” and Little Milton’s “Let Me Down Easy.” Just before its release last November year, James announced that The Dreamer would be her last album as she was determined to quit the music biz in order to deal with her mounting health issues. She will be missed, but alas, her music lives on forever. —Jeff Schwachter

Turning The Tables On Nightlife
ometimes the means to an end can come by circuitous route, and certainly the talented tribute band Damn the torpedoes fits that bill. Founded by singer/songwriter/guitarist Rich Kubicz in 2007, the band takes its name from the third studio album of Rock ‘n’ Roll hallof-Famers tom Petty and the heartbreakers — the group it mimics to the finest detail — and was spun in a roundabout way from Kubicz’s efforts to help independent musicians get the word out about their original material through an e-zine he co-founded called Let’s Rock America. Damn the torpedoes will play harrah’s eden Lounge on thursday, Feb. 2, starting 8pm. “most of us have been playing music as far back as our early teens,” says Kubicz, 44, who took up guitar at age nine. “i’ve always had a Damn the Torpedoes passion for independent music, and in 2005 i released a CD [called Echo Lake] that i recorded in stages in upstate new York. “shortly after that i started Let’s Rock America with a friend — not so much to promote my own music as to give other musicians a forum on the internet to post their independent material, because i know how hard it is to find venues to play original stuff and get people to come out and hear it.” the Web response to the e-zine was immediate and extensive, followed by a request to start interviewing band members, which it would do every Friday night. Kubicz, who had been in and out of bar bands most of his life, at the time was just helping others promote their material and not playing himself. “i was sort of on hiatus, but one night my wife said, ‘You know, Rich, you should be up there playing,’ and that’s when i thought i’d get back into it,” he says. “But i decided to do something a little different from the typical bar band. i wanted to sculpt a tribute band. People had often told me i looked and sounded like tom Petty, so in 2007 i formed Damn the torpedoes. if you had asked me five or six years ago if i’d be in a band today i’d have told you there’s no way i could do it, and now it’s been my life. the most important thing to me outside my family is Like us:
facebook.com/ACWeekly
to make this band the best it can be.” Kubicz and the others work gigs around their day jobs, but, after some initial personnel changes, they’ve honed a tight-knit sound that’s made them a sought-after commodity. along with Kubicz (lead vocalist, rhythm guitar), the others are lead guitarist Jimi alan, bassist Rob micucci, keyboardist/ blues harpist michael Frio and drummer Charlie spataro, all of whom help with backing vocals. the Feb. 2 gig at harrah’s will mark the band’s atlantic City debut. “We all have day jobs and obviously that’s the priority, but if something special comes along our employers have all been very understanding in letting us do this,” says Kubicz, from Union, n.J. “We’re certainly doing it more for the fun than the money, but we’re committed to making the crowd want to stay there and giving as clean and sober a performance as we can. We always want to be invited back to every venue, and playing atlantic City is like a dream come true for us. We’re very excited. i mean, when a place like B.B. King’s [where the band’s performed in new York City,] or harrah’s in atlantic City gives us the opportunity to be on their stage, the least we can do is give them our 100 percent best performance.” Replicating the look of the heartbreakers is part of the gig, but certainly not as crucial to the whole package as the sound. much of the equipment Damn the torpedoes uses is the same as the originals, such as Kubicz’s Rickenbacker 12-string acoustic and alan’s Gibson Les Paul electric. Casino venues typically insist the talent sticks with songs their guests will recognize, and that’s never an issue with a band as prolific with the hits as the heartbreakers. “[the heartbreakers] have had so many hits we could play five hours and everybody would know all the songs,” says Kubicz. “then there’s a couple we do just because we love the song, even though they’re not necessarily mainstream.” see pettytunes.com for more. n

hen the long-running 1990s rated episode in the history of Family Matters,
sitcom Family Matters left television in 1998, Jaleel White couldn’t put enough distance between himself and Steve Urkel. White was just 13 when he developed and played urkel to nerdy perfection, turning what was supposed to be a one-off acting gig into a series-stealing persona. White had become so identified as the kid with the high-pitched voice, the oversized glasses and the suspenders that held up his clam-digger pants that he was finding it difficult to land other acting roles. “if you ever see me do that character again, take me out and put a bullet in my head and put me out of my misery,” he famously told a reporter not long after the series had ended. But time and maturity have a way of tempering White’s feelings about the character. today, he’s proud of the work he did on Family Matters, which comically followed the lives of a middleclass African-American family in Chicago. he doesn’t go out of his way to call attention to urkel. that’s going to happen anyway, because the series is still airing in syndication around the world. “look, if you hit a bunch of home runs in high school, man, you don’t need to be talking about those home runs at 35 years old,” White tells AC Weekly. “if that’s your only pick-up line in the bars, man, you haven’t done much lately.” Although White was acting on television long before Family Matters, he accepts that urkel, more than any other reason, is why he’s still working today as an actor, producer, voiceover artist and writer. if not for urkel, it’s doubtful White would have been invited to host the Friday night live party this week (Jan. 27, 10pm) at the Pool After Dark at harrah’s resort in Atlantic City. urkel is an important piece of pop culture and resonated with the viewing public so much that no less than TV Guide named the character no. 27 on its list of top 50 television characters in the history of the medium. it’s unlikely people realize how much work and study went into creating the character, White says. even more amazing is that he began working on urkel from the moment he auditioned for the part when he was 12. “What you saw was a black kid’s impression of Ed Grimley,” he says of the geeky character Martin Short created for The Second City and SCTV in the early 1980s before taking it to Saturday Night Live. “i put a lot of work into what i did,” he explains. “i did a lot of studying. i studied The Honeymooners and the relationship between [Ed] Norton and [Ralph] Kramden. i really got academic about creating [urkel]. it kind of became my obsession.” By the time he was 17, urkel began flexing his artistic wings on the series. he wrote an episode of the show that featured “Grandmama,” the character that nBA star Larry Johnson played in a series of Converse sneaker commercials. the episode turned out to be the highestLike us:

and it was a personal thrill for White because he was a huge nBA fan and a pretty decent hoopster himself. “i had great contacts in the nBA so i could call [Johnson] personally and ask him if he wanted to be on the show,” he remembers. “that was an amazing thing, to be able to write an episode and within five weeks be shooting it.” White’s busier today than he’s ever been during his career, which began when he was three years old and started doing commercials before graduating to sitcoms like Charlie and Company with Flip Wilson and The Jeffersons. last year, he guest-starred in episodes of House on Fox and NCIS on CBs. he’s been active in producing new programming for the internet, and after the 2010 monster flick Mega Shark Versus Crocosaurus aired on the sci-Fi channel, he was asked to host a game show on the channel beginning in March. he acknowledges the television business is far more competitive today than it was during the run of Family Matters. “it’s just unfortunate we’ve got 1,000 channels and the internet,” he says. “it’s not ‘watercooler television’ any more with [only] four channels and 30 million people watching the same show on a thursday night.” he also misses the control he was able to exert as a teen as the break-out star of Family Matters. “People just don’t understand that so many factors go into develop programming, and i don’t control all of those factors,” he says. “i definitely yearn for the day that i can influence my character to the degree that i did when i was young. i actually had quite a bit of power and influence at a young age that i didn’t realize i had.” looking back, White is grateful for the opportunity to have played steve urkel because of the doors it opened and the experiences he enjoyed as a teenager. “i lived experiences that, quite frankly, most people would be blown away by,” he says. “Private planes with Denzel Washington, and Michael Jordan visiting me on the set with his family, and filming in Paris. i would never take any of those experiences for granted.” But he still isn’t ready to wear a button that says “Ask Me About urkel” or otherwise draw attention to his alter-ego of 20 years ago. “i’ve got a lot more left in me,” he says. “i’ve got a two-year-old daughter, and i want her to know what i do, not what i did.” n

sk anyone which is the most popular poker series in atlantic city and they’ll likely tell you it’s the Borgata open in september, complete with its championship event, a stop on the world Poker tour. But there’s something strange about the Borgata winter open that defies logic. the open, underway now through Feb. 3, is easily the second most popular event and could be nudging its way into no. 1. the open’s first event, a $500 + $60 no Limit tournament with a $500,000 guaranteed prize pool, drew 1,873 players (counting re-entries) and had a total buy-in of $936,500. that’s a record field for an opening day at a Borgata event and also a record buy-in for an opener. and it’s happening in January. this is supposed to be the city’s slowest time of the year, yet the winter open is packing them in. Large opening-day fields mean there are a lot of players in town that will be playing the various open events over the tournament’s 17 days. and large fields have mostly continued since the Jan. 18 opener. two other events, both $300 + $50 buy-ins, have topped 500 players, which is a healthy field for moderate, but not exactly cheap tournaments. the priciest event so far, a $1,000 buy-in, drew more than 200 players. still, that near-million buy-in for event 1 meant the open would have a big-time first payout. the winner was will “the thrill” Failla, who has been carving up the poker world for several months now. his $165,053 win takes him to around $3 million in tournament wins. Failla won more than $750,000 in august at the Legends of Poker wPt event and followed it quickly with an about $50,000 cash at the Borgata open in september. he also had cashes at the wsoP in July. it’s not surprising, however, as Failla plays most of the Borgata’s larger events. other notable pros seen at the open include world series of Poker bracelet winners mike sica and Jason young, world Poker tour champion Dwyte Pilgrim, and accomplished professionals such as Lee childs, matt Glantz, Josh Brikis, Gordon eng, michael Dentale and amanda musumeci, to name just a few. and as you would usually expect, the Like us:

Borgata has the serendipity of offering the highest bad-beat jackpot in the city at the moment, which usually fills up cash tables. the jackpot was at about $460,000 tuesday (Jan. 24), despite having $50,000 lopped off when a small bad-beat jackpot hit Jan. 18. the Borgata bad beat has a full jackpot for quad 10s minimum and a small bad-beat jackpot for quad deuces to nines. if you want proof the Borgata’s tables are full, it took less than a week for the jackpot to recover the $50 and actually add $70k. this is the third straight Borgata open where the jackpot has been well over $400,000. in september, at the Borgata open, the jackpot hit for $465,000. In some other news, two new Jersey congressman have introduced separate bills to help bring sports betting to new Jersey. the state has approved sports betting both in law and through a public referendum last november — at atlantic city casinos and the state’s horse tracks — but still has to see the federal ban on sports betting lifted before it can happen. the state, through state sen. Raymond Lezniak (D-Union), has brought suit to lift the ban, but if either of these congressional bills gain traction, the lawsuit may not be needed. one bill was introduced by local congressman Frank LoBiondo (R-2nd District) and would give all states in the country until 2016 to legalize sports betting. it’s a similar deadline to one imposed in 1992 under the current law, which new Jersey missed as state Republicans blocked the bill. another bill introduced by congressman Frank Pallone Jr. (D-monmouth) would exempt only new Jersey from the ban. it should be noted that if the ban was overturned by Lesnaik’s bill, all states that don’t have sports betting now would also get a shot at it. But essentially, LoBiondo’s bill would not change the federal law, rather merely give states another shot at exemption. Pallone’s bill would just exempt new Jersey, so again would not change the federal ban. Both congressmen say they feel their versions each have the best shots at getting through congress, but Pallone says he’s willing to work with LoBiondo in order to ensure new Jersey ends up with sports betting. n

Inspired by visit to the authentic brasseries of France, Michael Patrick’s brings a touch of Europe to the Golden Nugget. By Frank Gabriel

erhaps the most intriguing aspect about the ongoing renaissance created via golden nugget’s purchase of former trump marina is the inherent restaurant overhaul. Virtually all of the existing food outlets were closed, signaling that a new management broom would indeed sweep clean. in their place, golden nugget’s parent company Landry’s — originally restaurateurs — have carefully and selectively launched outlets of their own existing brands, all while simultaneously giving the tired facility new décor, esprit de corps and seemingly, a new lease on life. after a midsummer night’s dream of a meal at their signature dining room, the Chart house, we eagerly anticipated sampling michael patrick’s Brasserie. the 24-hour operation is credited to Landry’s chairman/Ceo tilman Fertitta, according to the company’s Web site. Fertitta developed the concept of michael patrick’s while vacationing in europe with family. as for the business name: “michael patrick’s is named for Fertitta’s two eldest sons, who especially enjoyed the charming brasseries of France.” appropriately bold, bright and lively, michael patrick’s sits just feet off a onceagain lively casino floor. (as an aside, if you haven’t had the chance to visit golden nugget, you owe it to yourself to take a ride and check the place out.) always in possession of one of the region’s most spacious, natural environs, the location now pulses with a sense of confidence, and even glamour. We began with an item not on the
Newly opened at the Golden Nugget regular menu, but instead posted on a tabletop addition list — pot stickers. these were five half-moon dumpings, smooth and perfectly cooked, with just a slight golden hue of caramelization. their insides, a pork blend, were tasty and just a bit dry. this was easily remedied with a quick dip in the soy-based sauce provided in a ramekin. From the other side of the globe, we also sampled a beef quesadilla. sliced into four firm triangles, the crisp tortilla was stuffed with ground meat, cheddar cheese and bell peppers. a trio of condiments — guacamole, salsa and sour cream — rounded out the plate. We really liked the gentle touch given this now-ubiquitous menu item. too many
cooks ladle their flattops with excessive oil prior to griddling tortillas. this creates an oily, unpleasant taste and wimpy texture. no such problems here, the warm shell clung to its ingredients like a miniskirt on scarlett Johansson — taut, sexy and seductive. next up was a dish we consider to be among the new american classics, Cobb salad. a wide, shallow bowl filled with shredded lettuces was topped by equal portions of diced bacon, chopped hardboiled egg, tomato, avocado, grilled chicken and bleu cheese. a gorgonzola dressing, applied with finesse, finished the pretty plate. each element was arranged separately, piled neatly and obediently organized. in this man-
ner, individual flavors remained distinct, even when combined on our forks. our entrées began with charbroiled new York strip steak. i opted for fries, rather than mashed spuds, to complete the French-style steak frites platter. the beef, grill-marked with a lovely crosshatch pattern, demonstrated all the signs of a steady hand at the meat station. accompanied by plenty of crisp hot shoestring fries and about a dozen strands of steamed asparagus, the strip steak looked quite content on its third of the plate. But the undeniable star of this evening was my partner’s chicken pot pie. it arrived ceremoniously with a puffed-up dome of pastry, close to two inches in height. Cracked open, the golden crust revealed a piping-hot stew of poultry, carrots, peas and onions, all in a bubble-bath of white sauce, tinged with sherry. Based on what is called veloute — one of the five “mother sauces” of French cuisine — this slightly creamy liquid adhered dreamily to the meat and vegetables. huge in both size and quality, this offering was also a ridiculous value, priced at just under 15 bucks. my dessert, an individual-sized round coconut cream pie, ate more like a fine French tart. With a crisp texture this pastry nicely complimented the toasted coconut mixture and its thick layer of creamy topping. my dining partner’s choice was a decadent chocolate brownie tart. the wide slice was dense and rich with a powerful, dark cocoa essence. n

as the Godfather of new York Comedy, enjoys holding court at the club as much as he can. “i love taking the stage there,” Quinn says. “every night is fun for me.” Quinn will also pop up in film. He played a supporting role in Grown Ups, which featured his comic-actor pals Adam sandler, david spade and Rob schneider. “that was a great time,” Quinn says. “i have fun with film and television, but i always seem to head back to the stage. it’s always worked well there for me.” Quinn is looking forward to Atlantic City, but don’t expect to see him living life in an excessive manner. “i don’t drink,” Quinn says. “i’ve been sober for 20 years or so, so you won’t see me at the bar, but that’s alright. i used
to be a blackout drunk. i would end up in places and have no idea how i got there. i don’t need that, especially at this age. i’m alright just hanging out without having to do anything more than just talking and having a bottle of water after a show. Comedy is enough for me to get focused on.” Quinn is a sage when it comes to comedy. He sees plenty of young comics and is encouraging and insightful. “i’m all about helping anybody who wants to get into comedy,” Quinn says. “My suggestion for anyone who wants to get into comedy is to do what’s natural. don’t pay attention to what is working for anybody else. You have to be true to yourself. don’t be influenced by what you see on television. it’s not a good idea to talk about something you didn’t live through. Your life should provide you with enough material. it’s an interesting time, there are no sacred cows. You can’t shock people anymore. Be true to yourself and you’ll be fine. You’ll be funny. don’t be a phony.” Quinn speaks from experience. there’s always at least a shard of reality in what he cracks wise about. When catching Quinn, you learn something and you laugh. He’s unpredictable and often hilarious. it doesn’t matter if he’s talking about childhood, dysfunctional families or violence in America. “i think people can relate to what i’m talking about,’ Quinn says. “there’s something to latch on to. it’s about having a good time. i just try to have fun doing this and i’ve been having fun with this for many years. i just hope to continue doing it for a long time.” n

Jerry Seinfeld directed Quinn’s one-man show about projects. “Jerry is very choosy and he has a right to be,” Quinn says. “i was honored that he chose to direct Long Story Short. to tell you the truth, i didn’t think he was going to be as involved as he was. i thought he would do some things, but he exceeded my expectations. He did quite a bit of rewriting. He did some editing. He was really into it and i was thrilled since he really enhanced the show. i had a great time with this and i think he had some fun too, and then there is the audience, who have been into it. everyone won with this one.” When Quinn isn’t on the road with Long Story Short, he can be found most nights cracking wise at Manhattan’s Comedy Cellar. Colin Quinn
Star of stand-up, TV and sketch comedy, Colin Quinn brings his new one-man show ‘Long Story Short’ to the Borgata’s Music Box.
elevision doesn’t do Colin Quinn justice. He was arguably the funniest part of the Mtv game show Remote Control as Ken ober’s sidekick back in the ’80s. He capably delivered the humorous news as Saturday Night Live’s “Weekend Update” anchor during the ’90s. His politically incorrect work as host of Comedy Central’s late and lamented Tough Crowd generated some great comedic repartee and points during the last decade. But Quinn, 52, needs more than tv. the Broadway and off-Broadway stages have been a better home for Quinn’s blunt, clever and unsparing comedy. Quinn has had a number of one-man shows and his latest, Long Story Short, is perhaps his most inspired. the show, which was directed by his pal Jerry seinfeld, goes back to ancient civilization and takes us to modern times. it examines how we arrived at this point. Quinn, who will render Long Story Short on saturday (Jan. 28) at the Borgata, is amusing but also thoughtful when dropping his bits about the rise and potential fall of our empire. “You can see it slipping,” Quinn tells Atlantic City Weekly by phone from his new York apartment. “if you’re looking for signs, there’s our economy. there’s Jersey Shore. there are a lot of things that say that we’re in trouble. But if you look at the whole history of it, it’s a fascinating thing. We all can’t help but be drawn into it.” Quinn was thrilled with seinfeld’s input. the star and co-creator of one of the all-time great sitcoms hits the road for some shows, but he is very selective

nce again, greetings and salutations. Well, this is it — mark the date, saturday, Jan. 28, our 23rd show at the Kimmel center, starring chris Montez, with his first appearance in Philadelphia; Ben e. King; Lenny Welch; shirley alston reeves, the original lead singer of the shirelles; darlene Love and her sister, who will be performing as the Honeycombs; and the trammps. show starts at 8pm, i’ll be there with my armani changes, and i’ll give a shoutout to all of you. to hear the songs of all the artists, keep on listening to WtKU KOOL 98.3 in these days before the show and you’ll get a sense of the excitement that night will produce. now, let’s ask the geator. Hi, Jerry, we are attending your show at the Kimmel Center on January 28. Can you please ask Lenny Welch to sing “I Need Someone”? It’s my favorite Welch recording and I know he rarely does it anymore. Thanks — Al from Pine Hill, N.J.
Lenny knows how important that song has been. Philadelphia was the only major market where it was as popular as the a side, “You don’t Know Me” — reason being that every night i would open up my Lover’s Portion on the air by playing “i need someone.” and he’ll be doing it on stage the night of the Kimmel center. By the way, he loves it also, because he wrote it. There was a post on Facebook about you being on a helicopter to New York around Christmas time. What’s the story? — Burt S., Jackson Heights, New York City

Philly, had bought a thousand copies of my book to be given out during the annual Pennsylvania society Weekend at the Waldorf-astoria, and wanted me to be a part of the entertainment and autograph the books. Unfortunately i was already booked that night in Wilmington, but leave it to Johnnie doc to come up with a solution. He sent down a helicopter, and i flew from Wilmington to new York and did my thing for 2,500 people. Senior moment! I started to tell one of my friends how the Drifters got their name, and then I completely forgot the answer. I’m pretty sure I heard it on your radio show. Can you help? — Dani Parisi, Philadelphia
george treadwell, who was married to sarah Vaughan at the time and a trumpet player in the Basie orchestra, was asked by atlantic records to get them a harmony Lenny Welch group like the ravens. He put together guys who were no longer singing with the groups that they began with. One was clyde McPhatter, who had just been fired by Billy Ward and was drifting from one group to another. this gave treadwell the idea to get members from other groups who were also “drifting” — thus the drifters. n

The Puck Starts Here
The AHL All-Star Classic will be hosted by a non-league affiliate for the first time in its history when it visits Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall on Sunday and Monday, Jan. 29 & 30. By Ray Schweibert
L
ast winter the american hockey League’s albany Devils played four regular-season games in atlantic city, and this winter’s ahL all-star classic at Boardwalk hall marks the first time the talent showcase has ever been hosted outside a league-affiliated city. if that’s not proof of a great first impression, what is? One ahL (the premier developmental league of the nhL) game in a.c. last year involved the Flyers affiliate adirondack Phantoms (who were displaced from their Philly home when the spectrum was imploded), and this past Jan. 6, hockey fans set an ahL single-game attendance record at Philly’s citizen Bank Park for the league’s annual Outdoor classic. area hockey fans have shown a keen interest in seeing the stars of the future, so 18-year ahL president David andrews expects attendance to be strong when the classic comes to Boardwalk hall on sunday and monday, Jan. 29-30. “Over 45,000 fans showed up for the Outdoor classic [the ahL’s equivalent of the nhL’s winter classic, also held at citizen’s Bank Park on Jan. 2],” says andrews. “we did a lot of promotion there for the classic in atlantic city, and we’ve got a lot of fans coming from hershey and wilkes-Barre/scranton, so there’s been plenty of publicity in the northeast corridor about this event.” sunday at 3pm will feature a skills competition in seven categories among the ahL’s top stars. monday’s all-star Game starts 7pm at Boardwalk hall, pitting the league’s western conference stars against their counterparts
League, and the guys in the american League are striving to get their change in the nhL. there’s quite a difference between the echL and ahL in terms skill level, size and speed. we’re bringing in some great hockey players from all over north america.” Last year’s ahL all-star game was a goalscoring bonanza in the hersheypark arena, with the eastern conference beating the western conference 11-8. n
2012 AHL All-Star Classic Keith Aucoin of the Hershey Bears from the eastern conference. standouts include the ahL’s leading scorer Keith aucoin of the hershey Bears (the washington capitals affiliate) and reigning ahL mVP corey Locke of Binghampton (Ottawa senators), both of whom will tie an ahL record with their sixth straight all-star appearance, and Darren haydar of the chicago wolves (Vancouver canucks), the captain of the western conference and an ahL leading scorer. the east head coach will be Keith mccambridge of the st. John’s ice caps (winnipeg Jets) and for the west it will be Oklahoma city Barons (edmonton Oilers) coach todd nelson. “Generally the players who make the [ahL] all-star roster are on the fast track to making the nhL, so there’s usually a lot of young players who are top talents in our league,” says andrews. “many of those who were on our all-
star roster last year are in the nhL now, so we get quite a bit of turnover. there’s some great talent there — a lot of first-round draft picks and top nhL prospects.” the ahL all-star Game originated in 1942 as a world war ii fundraiser and reemerged in 1995 after a hiatus. each roster has 24 players, including many who have already seen some nhL ice time at some point in their careers (including Flyers/Phantoms goalie michael Leighton). “in terms of the guys who’ve played in our all-star event, 93 percent of them have made it to the nhL,” says andrews. “and if you look at the nhL today, 85 percent of them have played in the american League. the guys in the echL [which the bygone atlantic city Boardwalk Bullies were part of] are striving to get their chance to play in the american
