Committee Reports Made Public A By Pinky Kravitz

DRAFT TRANSITION REPORT FROM THE New Jersey Gaming/Sports and Entertainment Transition Committee — encompassing 19 “transition team reports containing dozens of recommendations for reducing and reforming state government under newly sworn-in Gov. Chris Christie — was recently made public. The report’s introductory comment states that the historic business model of the casino industry has failed. However, a united front and a public/private venture to create Atlantic City as a destination resort may save the city and its casinos. A review of state initiatives to improve Atlantic City must be undertaken immediately. The purpose of the subcommittee transition report is to address the significant issues and financial needs of New Jersey gaming, professional sports and entertainment industries. New Jersey’s Gaming Industry — a key economic engine for New Jersey with over 38,000 jobs — is at a crossroads, and both directions are painful. Either we maintain a “business as usual approach with an accelerated economic collision between out-of-state competition and in-state mismanagement; or adopt a standstill governmental and economic reform creating a reengineered and enhanced industry for the “global good of New Jersey. The historical significant downturn is primarily due to: 1) increased competition in “Convenience Gaming in the five state mid-Atlantic region; 2) impact of the “Great Recession on customer spending; 3) a partial smoking ban has had a material revenue impact estimated at a 10 percent decline; 4) perception of Atlantic City as unsafe and unclean arising from a failure to invest in the area surrounding the casinos and local government’s inability to manage this current reality, in spite of unparalleled tax revenue per capita. Here is a summary of their short-term goals: A summary of core revitalization and strategic goals are identified for the immediate, medium and longterm goals: the immediate goals are to develop the necessary clean-and-safe initiatives, especially on the Boardwalk, to encourage family traffic. Improving existing regulatory model consistent with competitive markets without sacrificing integrity such as in Las Vegas. Derive substantial savings (potentially in excess of $30 million annually) and mandate to industry a rededication of savings to reinvestment in new business revenue generating marketing. Implementation of goal-oriented revitalization program managed and executed by state and local agencies — not political appointees — overseeing the effort. Develop a more focused and funded concentration on branding and event marketing. Reestablish Atlantic City as a significant Northeast hub for meetings and conventions. Their medium-term goal is to adopt and implement a master plan for the Boardwalk, marina district and Atlantic City’s entryways. Their long-term goals are to provide a master plan for the inlet and a plan for Bader Field that supports existing Atlantic City investment, and overall positioning of the city. The key implementation goals to consider are to endorse the above goals with the following bold action: Join us on Facebook:

facebook.com/ACWeekly

1) a challenge to casinos to match “seed capital of New Jersey for Atlantic City Partnership (the newly created ACP, with possibly up to $5 million) in order to “prime the pump. Integrate the ACP with the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA) and Atlantic City Convention and Visitors Authority (ACCVA) to ensure coordinated industry/ state agency efforts. State and local agencies to prioritize clean-and-safe efforts. 2) Streamline the Casino Control Act: discussion of regulatory reform could create savings of between $20 million and $30 million annually which could be dedicated to A.C. marketing and redevelopment efforts without sacrificing integrity. New Jersey’s costs compared to Nevada’s are astronomical. Cost per employee is $1,769 in N.J. compared to $196 in Nevada, and costs as a percentage of gross gaming revenue is 1.47 percent in N.J. compared to 0.33 percent in Nevada. Much of the cost is redundancy between the CCC (Casino Control Commission) and the DGE (Division of Gaming Enforcement), especially with respect to staffing. One model is to turn the CCC into a purely administrative judicial function over licensee activity (reducing staffing with the DGE focused on day-to-day regulatory functions and enforcement and instituting actions before the CCC) similar to other models in other jurisdictions. 3) Casinos pay 1.25 percent of GGR (about $30 million per year) toward A.C., South Jersey and North Jersey statutory funds. 4) As for fiscal responsibility; greater efficiency at all government levels, particularly in A.C. where industry pays $180 million per year in real estate taxes. Create a state role of overseer to immediately delve into financial operations to constructively reform current spending. Institute better utilization of the police department, which could assist in the clean and safe initiative. 5) Evaluate with parent stakeholders (state and casinos) how to expand N.J. gaming with the goal of collective investor future growth. 6) Do not waste the money to pursue intrastate Internet wagering or sports betting until federal laws change. In A.C. they urge making Atlantic and Pacific avenues one-way streets. They want to bolster the police presence and cleanup blighed areas. They want to conduct the state forensic audit of city finances, although one is being done. They also urge providing a state “presence in city government regarding city finances. It will be interesting to see which of these recommendations becomes a reality under Gov. Christie’s administration. n

Library Honors Black History

The Atlantic City Free Public Library will offer a series of special programs in February to celebrate Black History Month. The programs include a month-long exhibit called “A Pictorial of Club Harlem and the Way We Were,” which will highlight, through photos and memorabilia, the legendary A.C. club and the local AfricanAmerican community during the mid-1900s. The grand opening for the exhibit, presented in conjunction with the African-American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey (AAHMSJ), will be held Monday, Feb. 1, 6pm, in the library’s second-floor meeting room (1 N. Tennessee Ave.) in A.C. The exhibit is free and will remain open for public viewing during normal library business hours. Guest speakers will include AAHMSJ founder Ralph E. Hunter Sr. and former Club Harlem dancer Pattie Harris. “Since I started here in Feb. 2006 we’ve always done a lot for Black History Month, and this is at least the third straight year we’re honored to have Ralph Hunter as part of the exhibit,” says A.C. Library public information officer Don Latham. The exhibit will feature approximately 110 photos — 80 from the AAHMSJ, and 30 from the library’s Alfred M. Heston Collection of Atlantic City history. The Heston Collection dates back to 1944 and includes images of the A-list entertainers who helped make Atlantic City and Club Harlem famous, including paintings of Sammy Davis Jr. and club owner Leroy “Pops” Williams. Call 345-2269, ext. 3115, for more information about the exhibit. The library will also offer a Hip-Hop Writing Workshop designed for teenagers and adults at 6:30pm Wednesdays, Feb. 10 and 17, hosted by AC Weekly columnist Raymond Tyler. Every Thursday in Feb., Marvel Comics illustrator Joe DelBeato will teach youths ages 8 to 16 some of the history of African-Americans in comics, and how to draw superheroes. Please call 345-2269, ext. 3051, for these programs. — Kelley Anne Essinger

The first of three Atlantic City episodes of PBS’ Antiques Roadshow aired Monday, Jan. 25, on WHYY TV-12, and Parts 2 and 3 will air the following two Mondays, Feb. 1 and Feb. 8, on WHYY. PBS’ New Jersey affiliate, NJN, will air the first episode on Tuesday, Feb. 2, at 8pm. The Roadshow visited A.C. in June 2009 as part of a six-city summer tour. It was the first time the show ever visited the resort (and only the second time in 16 years it visited New Jersey), filming the episodes at the Atlantic City Convention Center. The first A.C. episode features a Walt Whitman memoir inscribed by the poet; a bronze-and-marble statue by French sculptor Albert Ernest Carrier Belleuse (1824-87); and an oil painting by 19th-century artist Cornelius Krieghoff. a book. It’s funny, I met him over the phone. We never met before we worked together. We spoke on the phone, we met, we went downstairs and we winged it. It’s worked out perfectly.” Last March, at the request of former Tropicana CEO Dennis Gomes (who spearheaded the creation of The Quarter), Seeger performed at the grand opening of the Indiana Live! Casino near Indianapolis. She also did a month-long benefit tour in Africa last year through her connections to the medical field (she has a background in home healthcare). “I’ve been traveling non-stop since 2004,” she says. “I’ve sung all over this world in the past five years and have been writing extensively based on things I’ve seen and done. “Of all the places I’ve been, New Jersey’s a state that really seems to suit my personality,” she adds. “I’ve performed on the West Coast and love it there, but on the East Coast they’re more aggressive, they’re more in-your-face, they’re more what-you-seeis-what-you-get and if you don’t like it get the hell out. That’s the attitude I’ve sort of adopted and it’s liberated me, and taught me to have thicker skin. I love it here, but no matter where you put me, as long as the people enjoy it and as long as I have a voice, I’m gonna love what I do.” n

IKE HOBOKEN’S MOST notorious vocalist Frank Sinatra, Canadian-born singer Angela Seeger takes pride in her autonomy and her resolve to do things “my way.” As energetic and outgoing as she is attractive and talented, Seeger is not to be mistaken for someone who’s lasted by accident as a regular at A.C.’s longest tenured dining, entertainment and retail complex, The Quarter at Tropicana. Sure, she’s had to provide patrons with the music they crave since arriving at Tango’s Lounge shortly after its inception, but she doesn’t do so on autopilot. She scrutinizes her audiences, gets a feel for the sounds they’re in the mood to hear, then delivers the goods with gusto — if and when she feels the crowd is ready. “A lot of people have asked me ‘How do you last six shows per week?’” says Seeger. “Well, I’ve learned that you can’t let loose every night. I work with what the crowd gives me, and I’m not going to bust a lung with every crowd every night. If you’re going to just sit there and look at me and not respond, I’m not going to try to beat you over the head with my best stuff. That’s not going to happen. I’m going to save that for a better audience.” Seeger, as you may have guessed, enjoys engaging audiences in her music — which may range from pop to folk to country to classic-rock covers and nearly everything else — and encouraging feedback. While much of Tango’s clientele consists of gaming patrons taking a break from the tables, many also seek it out as a destination spot due to its top-shelf entertainment. “A lot of performers feel that once they’re on stage they have to just give in to an audience — I’ll give you everything if you give me something in return,” says Seeger. “It works both ways. I’ve seen a lot of excellent musicians in A.C. and Vegas, but many of them seem to have the same or very similar set lists. I like to try to get a feel for what the audience is in the mood for. Being in this business, you have to be on the ball.” Pianist Dennis Matthews has backed up Seeger ever since she started singing at the Trop as a 25-year-old in 2004. It is a working relationship that’s melded together flawlessly since it began. “He’s been everywhere with me,” she says. “We laugh sometimes that with all the stories we have and all the experiences we’ve been through, we should write

THE CITY BEAT

The Other A.C.

A new book by Turiya Raheem documents the sights and sounds of A.C. from an African-American perspective By Raymond Tyler

W

ITH THE NEW TV SERIES based on early Atlantic City, Boardwalk Empire, coming this fall to HBO, I was glad when I received Turiya Raheem’s book Growing Up In the Other Atlantic City: Wash’s and the Northside. Finally there is a book that researches and documents the sights and sounds of A.C. from the African-American/Kentucky Avenue perspective. In other books and TV specials, places like Chicken Bone Beach, Club Harlem and the Wonder Gardens are footnotes to stories about places like the 500 Club and/or the Steele Pier. In Raheem’s book these places are more than just background. The long-gone theatres, restaurants, hotels and rooming houses that served people of color from janitors to doctors, families, celebrities like Sammy Davis Jr. and the great civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King are very much a part of the personal history that Raheem shares.

Raheem masterfully illustrates the beautiful world AfricanAmericans built here.

Raheem masterfully illustrates the beautiful world African-Americans built here. More than a mere reference book, Growing Up in the Other Atlantic City is a testimony to what family and neighborhoods used to be, and a living love letter to an Atlantic City that passed away far too soon. I found Growing Up to be informative, entertaining and, as a young businessman myself, extremely inspiring. Last Friday, Jan. 22, Turiya Raheem had a book signing at the current Wash’s Café location, 128 N. New Road in Pleasantville. We talked about her having grown up in “the other Atlantic City.” Where was the first Wash’s located? The first Wash’s location was at 35 North Kentucky Avenue (for about 15 years), right down the street from the Club Harlem. That was great, but when rents on Kentucky became too high and business increased, my grandfather and uncles found a larger spot at 1702 Arctic Avenue (for about 20 years) before it moved to its Join us on Facebook:

current location in Pleasantville. What are your earliest memories of Wash’s? My earliest memories of Wash’s and some of my fondest are when we all (she and her cousins) went there for dinner after a day at the beach, because that’s where all of our parents were working. What is your definition of ‘The Other Atlantic City’? I tell people ‘the other A.C.’ is the downhome, cozy place where everybody knows everybody. You’ve got to watch who you marry because everybody is related. People talk to each other without leaving their own porches or stoops, where everybody sits in the summer to enjoy warm evenings after days at the beach. It’s the A.C. away from the south side, the Boardwalk and the casinos. What dish would you suggest for people dining at Wash’s today? Everybody wants Wash’s fried chicken wings, but I think they should try a seafood platter myself. Your book shares the love your family has. What do you want readers to learn from your book? Readers must know that A.C.’s AfricanAmerican community contributed much to make this tiny city by the sea the ‘nation’s playground’ and then the ‘world’s playground,’ and it is a disgrace that local residents have not benefitted more from the presence of the casino industry. There were so many promises made that never happened, but like someone said, it still ain’t too late. If the right groups join together, we can have a Northside/Kentucky Avenue museum, a performing arts school, and more to document and preserve our history in A.C. n

they deliver the product right to your door. However, at my husband’s office, he has them in stock, for your convenience, without a wait, plus he is usually 10-15-percent less than those advertised and he direct-ships also. With all of that you also get personalized service and a physical place to go to. But because of perception people wind up ordering from the online retailer. These people could’ve saved time, money and energy if they just did some research to begin with. Other perception examples could be: the way people dress — it can say one thing about them, but their personality could be another; self perception — you may perceive yourself differently than others perceive you. You catch my drift. I am sure something like this has happened to some of you in different circumstances. Has it? I am curious to hear your responses. In any event, make sure to open your eyes and if you decide that living in the “fast lane” isn’t getting you anywhere, then let me know and I will do my best to connect you to the right people. There are so many businesses, organizations and private people right here in our area who have resources, and who know people who can help you succeed. Sometimes we need to take the time to look past the easy options in our lives and look for the opportunities to get ahead with the help of someone else. There are so many times that we take the easy way out because it’s only a natural instinct to follow, but if we were to just take those few extra steps and keep our eyes open for better opportunities, we may just realize that with the help of others we can achieve more. Happy reading everyone, and remember to ask yourself “Am I on Whitney’s Radar?” n

S YOU ALL KNOW, I AM ALWAYS keeping myself busy. On top of running from meeting to meeting, writing my column, filming my TV segment and making jewelry, I also have to cook dinner and do house chores like everyone else. I pretty much have my weekly routine down pat, so usually on Fridays I do my food shopping. However, I am always in a rush to get dinner started and ready before hubby gets home. So when I am ready to check out of the supermarket, its “game on” — I walk fast down the main drag along the checkout lines trying to see which opening will get me out the fastest (all of you type-As know what I mean). However these last few times shopping I made an interesting observation. The seemingly “faster” self-checkout lines were backed up, while the “slower” regular checkout lanes were mostly just one person about to pay for their items. I said to myself, “Wow, I can’t believe that I just passed a few open lanes where I had the opportunity to be the next one to check out,” but for whatever reason, the people in the “self-checkout” lanes were just standing there, not being proactive. Now I may be reading into this too deeply, but I wanted to share my thoughts because it made me think about the quote “perception is reality,” and how true it is in even the most random of situations. In life we all look for that “self checkout” lane because we think that we won’t have any hassles, we can go at our own pace, and we can get through the process pretty quickly or faster than having someone help us. But that is not always the case. Just because something says to us “fast,” doesn’t mean that it truly is. The funny thing is that most of the “self-checkout” people wind up needing help anyway. Something isn’t ringing up, the coupon isn’t scanning, how much does the banana weigh? — whatever. And there is always that one attendant who has to help all four registers, so if someone is backed up with an issue it could technically back everyone else up. Another related perception story is an example my husband (an optometrist) complains about when he sees the 1-800Contacts commercial. He gets irritated that people order contacts from what they perceive to be a cheaper option, because they advertise that they are 50percent less than a private practice and

HE BORGATA WINTER OPEN poker tournament has put a little heat into the January poker scene this week with some surprisingly big payouts in early rounds. The Jan. 20 opening event — A $350 buy-in, deepstack, no-limit Hold’em tourney — paid winner Brian Woods of Lutherville, Md., nearly $100,000 ($99,919). With more than 1,500 players and a total buy-in of $547,050, the event took two days to play. Saturday’s (Jan. 23) no-limit tournament, another two-dayer with a $1,000 buy-in, paid off even better for winner William Beasley of Hollywood, Fla., who took home $125,000 of the $452,000 total buy-in. Tournaments have been running all week with many crossing over into two days of play. Thursday (Jan. 28) and Friday (Jan. 29) see two major preliminaries before the main event starts Sunday (Jan. 31). Thursday sees a $2,000 + $150 heads-up double elimination tournament while on Friday the open hosts a $1,500 + $125 No Limit Hold’em tournament. The $3,300 + $200 main event carries a $2 million guaranteed prize pool. Visit theborgata.com for information. Meanwhile, last week’s Trump Taj Mahal’s Ray Kot Poker Open, a charity tournament to help the family of Kot, a longtime casino employee killed in a shooting at the casino last year, was a rousing success. The event raised more than $25,000, to be used to help send Kot’s son Drew to college. The winners, who competed for prizes, were swept by Taj employees. They were 1st Place, Victor Chea, Trump Taj Poker Supervisor; 2nd Place, Frank Fernandez, Trump Taj Mahal Dual Rate Floor Supervisor, and 3rd Place, Kaylin Vocci, Dealer, Trump Taj Mahal. First prize was a trip to the Big Game Feb. 7. RENT SMITH IS A MAN WITH a plan. The intensely passionate 32-year-old frontman for the hardcharging rock band Shinedown says he’s in it for the long haul. “We didn’t get in this to run a race,” he says. “We got into this to run a marathon. We want a career, and that’s what we’re building for. Forty years from now, as long as we can still get up, we’ll still do it, and that’s no bullshit.” That’s not typical rock-star hubris talking. Smith’s boast is backed up by numbers. In the 10 years since Shinedown was formed in Smith’s native Florida, the band has recorded just three studio albums. But those albums — Leave A Whisper, Us or Them and The Sound of Madness — have spun off an astonishing 11 hit singles that all charted in the Top 5, including four number ones. No other band or artists has accomplished that fete. Known primarily as a touring band, Shinedown has performed more than 430 shows since launching its tour in support of The Sound of Madness in May 2008. After a short break from the road in December to record some movie soundtracks, the band is back on the road for the rest of 2010. By the end of the year, they’ll have performed throughout the United States, made several more trips to Europe — they’ve already been there four times just for this album — and then spend a month in Australia before working their way back home with stops in Hawaii and Alaska. And now there’s talk about slipping in a quick tour of Japan. With a multi-octave range and one of the most powerful but disciplined voices in modern rock, Smith says the decision to spend most of their time on the road stemmed from the music and entertainment industries’ initial lack of understand of Shinedown’s music. “I figured out early on that certain higher-ups [in the business], really didn’t get this band at all and they weren’t going to give us their love,” Smith tells AC Weekly during a recent phone call from Providence, R.I., where his band was preparing to open the next leg of its tour. So Smith decided if his band couldn’t get corporate support, Shinedown would take its music directly to the people using radio as the conduit. “I decided that we were going to build

12331 HAC Print Ads for W/O January 25 EL. 2 ACW.indd 1

1/25/10 2:22 PM

the band by the radio, and we set out to make the most passionate and intense music that we could make,” he explains. Then the band made friends with radio programmers and disc jockeys around the country. “This is a radio band, and we’re proud to be a radio band,” says Smith, whose band headlines the House of Blues at Showboat on Friday, Jan. 29, with the band Puddle of Mudd. “They’ve given us massive amounts of support from day one.” By getting their music played on terrestrial radio stations, the band began building an incredibly loyal fan base that was drawn to Shinedown’s intensely personal songs that speak to the human spirit and address issues everyone faces in life. Initially, they attracted a predominantly male audience to their shows, but with the release of The Sound of Madness, the band’s demographics began to change. “We’re seeing a lot more younger people, a lot more women coming to the show now,” Smith says. “We only have one boss, and it just happens to be everybody in the audience. That’s the reason we tour as much as we do.” Smith wears his passion for his music on his sleeve. Not only does he want the band’s songs to be heard around the world, he also doesn’t want to put any age barriers on the band’s appeal. “The school of thought for us is eight to 80 [years old],” he says. “We want the whole world to know who this band is.” Of their three albums, The Sound of Madness is easily the best of the bunch. Smith is hoping to go back into a studio to record a fourth album when the current tour ends. “For the next record, we’re going to do everything in our power to make it better than the first three,” he says. “I think if you’re not honest with yourself and you don’t write the song for yourself first, then no one else is going to believe it when they hear it,” he says. n

Chelsea Prime

There’s a beehive of activity taking place during a typical day at the Chelsea hotel By Frank Gabriel

N

INE O’CLOCK — A SUNNY, unseasonably warm January morning. Chef Brian Van Der Gant is busy working the line inside a spotless, state-of-the-art kitchen at Teplitzky’s restaurant. Located in Atlantic City’s stylish Chelsea hotel, Teplitzky’s serves as its anchor eatery, providing breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. Van Der Gant, despite a youthful 26 years of age, brings some serious culinary credentials, having helped open Bobby Flay Steakhouse at the Borgata several years prior. These days he runs a kitchen that does everything from four-egg omelets and stuffed challah-bread French toast to imaginative sandwiches and soups, plus nightly dinner specials like meatloaf, scallops and pasta, fish ‘n’ chips and prime rib. Van Der Gant’s menu speaks volumes about the commitment here to offering superior food at tidy price points. An oversized bowl of a dozen gorgeous Mahogany clams laced by strips of crisp chorizo and diced shallots, all lounging in a sunshine-hued white wine broth with crostini for sopping. A panini combines proscuitto de Parma with provolone, sundried tomato and pesto aioli on a toasty, golden-brown Le Bus ciabatta roll. Van Der Gant’s enthusiasm for his craft seems quite the norm at the Chelsea, where a team of professionals have big plans for the future of A.C.’s premiere boutique hotel. Thomas Van Muenster, director of food and beverage, happily has retained virtually all 75 or so employees since the Chelsea’s

doors opened in July 2008. Those staffers, according to Van Muenster, are one key to the hotel’s future. The other — “embracing locals, being approachable and focusing on value” — reverberates while walking the hallways of the sprawling 331-room complex and observing daily activity. At 10am, chef Jeanette Behrens works above Teplitsky’s in a vast L-shaped, second-floor production kitchen. While a team of personnel clean and store fresh herbs — parsley, dill and rosemary — she watchfully eyes another cook whisking chocolate ganache. One of multiple toques Behrens sports here is that of pastry guru. Van Muenster praises her contributions, lauding, “she has her hands in everything,” such as the creation of all house sauces, soups and stocks, plus banquet fare. Despite this assortment of tasks, her desserts — including those used three floors up in top-drawer steak and seafood house Chelsea Prime — are consistently elegant and sophisticated. Like, for instance the baked Alaska with pistachio chiffon. Readers of this space may recall us imploring for the return of that old-school sweet in a “wish list” column two weeks ago. As if aligned by the stars, Behrens added it to their bill of fare only days earlier. At 11am, executive chef Jason Hanin of Chelsea Prime wanders through Teplitzky’s glass doors. He greets a representative of Philly seafood purveyors Samuels & Sons and they take seats at a quiet end of the sweeping S-shaped counter, which divides the restaurant’s two seating sections. Ordering coffees, the kinetic Hanin

eagerly produces a laptop from his overstuffed backpack and gets down to the serious business of ordering a weekend’s worth of product. It’s a lengthy, intense process, taking nearly an hour. Several of those items will soon end up on plates in what the hotel’s E-marketing manager Helen McGrath lovingly refers to as “our sepia-toned masterpiece,” the stunning fifth-floor, ocean-view dining space that is Chelsea Prime. At 7pm, a pale, nearly translucent dice of yellowtail blends harmoniously with sliced cherry peppers and chunked avocado to form a classic seviche. Wild king salmon, accurately depicted by server Renee Esposito, is served medium rare

with a cool, pink center. A 16-ounce prime New York strip receives similarly reverential treatment, crusted with a saltand-pepper mix and seared at a blistering 1,700 degrees. Black and white 1940s Hollywood themes abound here, the monochromatic spectrum heightened by vintage seashore photography from local historian Vicki Gold Levy. The rest of the fifth floor serves as the entertainment and nightlife axis. A series of spacious lounges connect seamlessly to a cozy game room. Down one corridor a deck and pool morphs into part of C5, the Las Vegas-style indoor/ outdoor nightclub. Wildly popular in its first full season, C5 saw upward of 1,500 patrons on some weekends. Nightlife manager C.J. Hartman, another Borgata veteran who worked both Mixx and mur. mur nightclubs there, indicates C5’s first big event this year will be NFL themed, with players from a number of teams expected to attend on Saturday, Feb. 27. Around 2am, as the day finally ends and it’s time to retire, the Chelsea offers weary guests a pair of room options. The Annex, a retro atmosphere, provides 119 bedchambers typically costing under $100 a night. The Luxe Tower, with 221 rooms, also includes eight penthouse suites with breathtaking, 20-story views of the city. n E-mail Frank Gabriel at fgabriel@acweekly.com

The Miss’d America Pageant

When: Sunday, Jan. 31, 7:30pm Where: Adrian Phillips Ballroom, Boardwalk Hall How Much: $100-$35 for a long time, but people loved it. And the media had loved it too. It seemed perfect.” Helfant himself worked on the pageant at Studio Six from its inception and has very specific memories of the event. “What I remember is laughter, laughter and laughter,” he says. “This new show won’t be any different.” Almost immediStill, like Miss America, it took a few years for the ately two of the city’s casino companies, Harrah’s and Trump properties, expressed an interest in doing Miss’d America Pageant to really gain prominence. “The first time we did the show, I think we crowned the show. Both saw the pageant as an opportunity to the winner with a Burger King paper crown and we gave increase marketing of the city to the gay community, her dead roses wrapped in the want ads,” Schultz says. one of the goals of the alliance. “But the funniest thing was when she won. She fainted. I mean she really fainted.” The little drag show might have stayed small, but then fate and singer Jennifer Holiday would intervene. Holiday was playing an AIDS benefit at the nightclub and she had required a rather large stage for her show. The stage was still standing when the Miss’d America Pageant came up again. “But then we thought of Boardwalk Hall,” Helfant “That was the first time we had it on a big stage with a runway,” says Schultz. “So Miss’d America was crowned says. “It’s a neutral site and all the casinos could get on Jennifer Holiday’s stage. From there it just started to behind it. And it’s where the original Miss America Pageant was held. Boardwalk Hall means something to grow every year.” In fact, the Miss’d America Pageant grew in popularity people who grew up around here. So we took the idea through the 1990s and early 2000s even as the real deal to the Atlantic City Convention and Visitors Authority down the Boardwalk was losing its luster. Still, when [ACCVA] and they loved it too.” By November, the alliance, the ACCVA and the Miss America skulked away — uhm, relocated — the Schultz-Hill Foundation announced that the drag Miss’d America Pageant faded away as well. “Miss America left and there was that one year that queens would be back, strutting their stuff at Boardwalk there was no pageant [in 2005],” Schultz says. “The Hall’s Adrian Phillips Ballroom. With the pageant on, the alliance has enlisted Robert event was designed to be after the pageant. Then suddenly the pageant’s in Vegas and it’s in January, not “Sandy Beach” Hitchen to write and direct. Also on hand September. While all that’s happening, at the same time will be Queer Eye for the Straight Guy’s Carson Kressley to cowe were selling the club and retiring from the business, host with the last crowned Miss’d America Andrea LaMour. Proceeds will benefit the GLBT Alliance, the Schultz-Hill so it just stopped.” That could have been the end of Atlantic City’s alter- Scholarship Foundation, the William Way Center of native tradition. But in the end, it’s hard to keep a good Philadelphia, Broadway Cares-Equity Fights AIDS of New drag queen down. This Sunday (Jan. 31, still the day York City and the South Jersey AIDS Alliance. The pageant’s rebirth is the brainchild ing a power in Atlantic City and some day, he hopes, a pageant as famous as the one that left the city behind. of the Greater Atlantic City GLBT Alliance. “The Miss’d America Pageant started in Atlantic City “We were trying to come up with an idea for a benefit show for the group,” says Rich Helfant, president of just like Miss America,” he says. “But then Vegas stole the alliance. “And we came up with the idea of bring- the pageant from us. HERE’S SOMETHING MAGICAL THAT happens when Atlantic City businessmen start thinking about pageants — and marketing — at the same time. Beloved and cherished traditions that last for decades can be born. That’s certainly what happened when A.C. businessmen got together in 1921 and tried to figure out a way to keep tourists around for a few weeks after Labor Day. They came up with a bathing beauty pageant that would quickly morph into the Miss America Pageant. The Pageant would reign as America’s premier beauty pageant until 2005 when it disappeared from the public conscious forever (or moved to Vegas, same thing). But before it left, the Miss America Pageant had established not only a relationship with southern New Jersey as a whole, but also a long and torrid love affair with Atlantic City’s gay community. And for one local businessman, that combo would make the magic marketing lightning strike again. “The Miss America Pageant was always on a Saturday Night,” says John Schultz, former Atlantic City councilman and former owner of The Brass Rail and the Studio Six nightclub. “And right after the pageant [Studio Six] would fill up with all the people who worked the pageant — the dancers and the hair stylists, everyone who worked the show. But the next night was always dead in the city, you know a Sunday night. And a lot of people who worked the show stayed over because it was easier to travel out of the city on Mondays. So I came up with an idea for a show we could do that night.” Schultz thought drag queens, and lots of them. Schultz’s brainchild was a mock staging of the more famous pageant using guys in drag as contestants. It was dubbed the Miss’d America Pageant and debuted around 1990. It was a perfect fit right from the start. Though most pageant fans in the area either served as pageant volunteers, took in the now much-missed Miss America Boardwalk Parade or loyally watched it on TV, the region’s gay community took it a step farther. It was the city’s gay community, after all, that flocked to New York Avenue during the parade and started the famed “show us your shoes” tradition. And they were the ones who filled up Boardwalk Hall for the boring preliminaries as well as the big broadcast. With such a solid demographic in the pageant audience, what better way to finish up the weekend than a drag show?

Hall-adega Nights

Auto racing returns to Boardwalk Hall for two nights this weekend By Ray Schweibert

Where: Boardwalk Hall, Georgia Ave. & the Boardwalk, A.C. When: Fri. & Sat., Jan. 29-30, 7:30pm Phone: 800-736-1420 or 348-7000 How Much: $15 (gen. admission) to $30 (front row) for adults; $5 for children 12 and under; free for children under 2. Tickets $2 more the day of event. Web: boardwalkhall.com or aarn.com

Y

OU’D BE HARD-PRESSED TO name an activity that hasn’t taken place at some point inside Boardwalk Hall over the past 80 years. Area newcomers postulating the improbable might guess auto racing, but guess what? That’s been hosted by the hallowed Hall on and off since 1938, and really gained popularity as a fun, family-friendly activity when Len Sammons, publisher of Area Auto Racing News (AARN, a weekly publication based in Trenton), resurrected it after a long hiatus in 2003. Local businessman George Stockinger of Pleasantville played a huge part in igniting the sport’s popularity at the Hall back in the mid-1960s, and this weekend will mark the 65th time Boardwalk Hall has hosted an auto-racing event since Stockinger got involved.

‘I think it’s an appealing sport because you are literally right on top of the action.’

This will be the eighth annual Atlantic City Indoor Auto Racing event since Sammons took over production. Racing involves three divisions of midget cars — Champ Kart, Slingshot and the keynote division of the series, Three-Quarter (TQ) Midget, which is culminated by the feature race called the Gambler’s Classic. Competition starts 7:30pm Friday. “Midget-car racing is held indoors and outdoors throughout the year,” says Jerry Reigle, AARN assistant news editor. “The popularity of the sport makes it an indoor sport during the winter months. Boardwalk Hall and the Dunkin’ Donuts Center [in Providence, R.I.] are the only two venues to hold indoor midget-car racing in the Northeast.” Several big-name auto racers are part of the A.C. event, according to Reigle, among them Indianapolis 500 veteran Davey Hamilton, nine-time NASCAR

series winner Mike Stefanik, multiple indoor and outdoor feature winner Lou Cicconi Jr, multiple Micro Sprint Car feature winner Ryan Smith, and defending Gambler’s Classic TQ Midget champ Ted Christopher. He and the other two defending champs, Paul Lotier Jr. (Slingshots) and Ryan Kendall (Champ Karts), are back to defend their titles. About 100 drivers are expected to compete for the TQ Midget title, among them Ryan Truex of Stafford Township (younger brother of NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Martin Truex) and two talented females — Jessica Zemken, 23, of Sprakers, N.Y., and Becca Anderson, 30, of Houston, Del. Zemken is a member of the racing team owned by two-time NASCAR Spring Cup Series champion Tony Stewart, and will be competing at Boardwalk Hall for the first time. She was an A.C. spectator in 2007. “It’s a fun atmosphere,” says Zemken in a media release. “It can be pretty intense, especially qualifying because you have so many cars trying to get into the

feature race [Saturday night].” Anderson’s a seasoned racecar driver but, like Zemken, was only a spectator at Boardwalk Hall previously. “It’s a tight track and there is a lot happening,” says Anderson. “You have to watch out for the cars in front of you as you are getting nudged by the cars behind you.” This year’s one-tenth-mile oval track has been slightly modified, says Reigle, to allow for easier passing and maneuvering around corners. “The inside barriers in the corners are being changed for 2010,” he says. “Previously the inside fencing was shaped with more succinct ends. Basically the inside fence barrier looked like a rectangle. [This year] it’ll be more rounded, which allows the cars to corner more swiftly and will allow for faster speeds, as the corner speeds will be quicker than they’ve been.” The frenzied activity and non-stop action makes for a fun night out for the family, says Boardwalk Hall director of marketing Valarie McGonigal.

“The fans really seem to enjoy the show, and the sport itself is very familyfriendly with regard to spectators and participants,” says McGonigal. “Many of the same participants return every year, as it has become a multi-generation tradition. Our audience is literally all ages with many parents bringing their children. “I think it’s an appealing sport because you are literally right on top of the action, and those little cars can really travel!” The Gambler’s Classic starts with a 30lap preliminary race on Friday night. The 26-car, 40-lap championship race will take place Saturday night. “It will be quite an experience racing with all those cars on that track,” says Zemken. “A lot of great drivers will be competing to get that win.” n see more online @

Oscar Tout Sheet Predictions for the Academy Award nominations By Lori Hoffman

T

HIS IS THE YEAR WHEN THE Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is trying to appeal to a wider audience by opening up the Best Picture nominations to a field of 10, rather than five. Freefall ratings for the Oscar telecast dictated the change and perhaps the chance that Avatar will win will indeed pump up the ratings. Here is my annual Oscar predictions in the form of a racetrack tout sheet, a nod to my late father, who loved to play the ponies. While there are favorites in every category, only the supporting nods are bet-the-house prohibitive favorites for Mo’Nique and Christoph Waltz. With those 10 Best Picture nominees, the Best Picture race really is wide open and I’ll be rooting for Margate’s own Scott Neustadter to earn an original screenplay nomination for 500 Days of Summer. The nominations will be announced Tuesday, Feb. 2, at 8:30am on the morning news programs, and the Academy Awards will be presented on Sunday, March 7, 8pm on ABC, hosted by Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin.

Race 1: Best Supporting Actress

J A N U A R Y 2 8 , 2 0 1 0 / A C W E E K LY. C O M

Mo’Nique, Precious Vera Farmiga, Up in the Air

Anna Kendrick, Up in the Air 6:1 Penelope Cruz, Nine 8:1 Maggie Gyllenhaal, Crazy Heart 18 : 1 Julianne Moore, A Single Man 20 : 1 Mo’Nique should have her Oscar speech ready. For Farmiga and Kendrick the nominations will be a nice boost to their careers. Cruz won last year. Crazy Heart is picking up steam which is why I think Gyllehaal will slip by Moore for the fifth nomination.

Race 2: Best Supporting Actor

Sandra Bullock has paid her dues and just might edge out Meryl Streep, who will earn her 16th nomination. Carey Mulligan and Gabourey Sidibe were both brilliant but have not paid their dues. Helen Mirren fills out the nominees.

Race 4: Best Actor

Jeff Bridges, Crazy Heart 3:2 George Clooney, Up in the Air EVEN Jeremy Renner, The Hurt Locker 6:1 Colin Firth, A Single Man 10 : 1 Morgan Freeman, Invictus 20 : 1 It’s Team Clooney vs. Team Bridges in a battle between two career-defining roles, but Bridges (four previous nominations) has been around longer without winning so he has the sentimental edge over Clooney, especially with his SAG win Jan. 23. In any other year Jeremy Renner’s performance would be the frontrunner. Firth and Freeman fill out the dance card.

Christoph Waltz, Inglourious Basterds 1 : 5 Woody Harrelson, The Messenger 5:1 Stanley Tucci, The Lovely Bones 5:1 Alec Baldwin, It’s Complicated 20 : 1 Matt Damon, Invictus 30 : 1 Anthony Mackie, The Hurt Locker 50 : 1 Christoph Waltz has won nearly every critics’ award, the Golden Globe and the SAG award; the other nominees just fill out the dance card. The Hurt Locker’s Race 5: Best Director Anthony Mackie should be nominated Kathryn Bigelow, The Hurt Locker EVEN James Cameron, Avatar 3:1 but he won’t be. Jason Reitman, Up in the Air 7:1 Quentin Tarantino, Inglourious Basterds 9 : 1 Race 3: Best Actress 15 : 1 Sandra Bullock, The Blind Side EVEN Lee Daniels, Precious Only three previous women have Meryl Streep, Julie & Julia 3:1 Carey Mulligan, An Education 6 : 1 been nominated for best director, Lina 10 : 1 Wertmuller, Jane Campion and Sofia 1 : 5 Helen Mirren, The Last Station 15 : 1 Coppola. shatter that glass ceiling with Bigelow’s brilliant work. Despite Cameron’s win at the Golden Globes, I think she is still the Oscar frontrunner.

The Oscar Derby: Best Picture

The Hurt Locker 3:1 Avatar 5:1 Up in the Air 8:1 Inglourious Basterds 10 : 1 Precious 12 : 1 Up 15 : 1 500 Days of Summer 15 : 1 Star Trek 18 : 1 Crazy Heart 20 : 1 The Messenger 25 : 1 The Hurt Locker, Avatar and Up in the Air are in a three-way battle. Air has been fading of late, but I don’t believe the Academy will give the best picture nod to Avatar. The SAG cast ensemble win for Inglourious Basterds might put that film back in contention. I would be happy if either Hurt Locker or Air wins, plus I just want to see Star Trek get a “pure fun” nomination. ■
