ALBUM WEEK
The Art of Dumpster Diving By Kirsten Corley
W
e have all heard the saying “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure,” and artist Eric Schultz takes that old adage to heart. Schultz, who utilizes objects such as recycled goods in his pieces, has a new exhibit at the Noyes Museum of Stockton College in Oceanville through May 11. Referred to as a “dumpster diver,” Schultz’s newest solo exhibit is titled “Man and the Machine.” When most people see things such as car ramps, saw blades, shovels and pitchforks they might not see the “art” in these every day objects. But Schultz does. In fact, he has used these materials in a past exhibit titled “Magic Lantern.” He also builds things such as tigers, insects, hermit crabs and skeletons as other pieces in his works. To take things people see on a daily basis and help to identify them as art and help viewers to relate to them in a different way is Schultz’s goal. “If I have achieved this link I feel I have created a successful piece of artwork everyone can enjoy,” says Schultz who is employed at The Sculpture Foundation as well as The Garden State Discovery Museum. His inspiration comes from his father who is an engineer and his mother who took him to his first museum as a child. He realized at a young age one does not need raw materials to make art and that art is all around us if you keep your eyes open. Schultz has been a professional sculptor for 10 years, having graduated from Temple University’s Tyler School of Art. When asked what makes something art Schultz replies, “It’s a creation of my brain.” Schultz wants to raise awareness about how much people waste objects and how beautiful certain objects can be with a little attention. Schultz will speak and meet guests at a reception on Feb. 15, 11am. For more information call 652-8848 or visit noyesmuseum.org.

eed to get your mind off this nasty winter? The Progressive Atlantic City Boat Show is returning to the AC Convention Center Wednesday through Sunday, Feb. 5-9. Admission is $15 and free for those ages 15 and under while accompanied by an adult. Besides all the latest models from dozens of boat builders throughout the nation, there are plenty of seminars and activities for everyone in the family. The show is about 10 percent larger this year and well into its fourth decade visiting A.C. “We try to bring in a number of different features, with most of it free with admission,” says show manager Jon Pritko. “When you consider how expensive some family activities can be these days, we’re providing a daylong event that families can attend that’s very affordable. We have a ton of educational components that are free of charge. We do have some premier classes that are more like one-onone seminars [including fishing tips and do-it-yourself repair seminars] that charge a nominal fee, but we’re sure attendees will find them well worth the cost.” Among the special guests will be Capt. Dave Carraro from the National Geographic Channel show Wicked Tuna. There will be a “Kids Fly Casting Competition” with a grand prize of a Shu-Fly fly fishing rod and five other prizes, a Kids Create-A-Boat workshop, and pedal boating on a mini indoor lake. The six-time world champion Miss Geico Racing Team will have its new racing boat on display. Guests can enter to win a 2014 Sea Hunt 210 Triton Boat, an original watercolor by late artist Willard Bond, and other giveaways. Show hours are Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 11am-8pm; Saturday, 10am-8pm; and Sunday, 10am5pm. Visit acboatshow.com for more.

Rosanne Cash ‘The River & The Thread’ (Blue Note) f an artist is only as good as her last work, then Rosanne Cash, 58, has nothing to worry about in relation to her new album, The River & The Thread.. Ever since 2006’s stellar Black Cadillac album, Cash has been exploring her past, her famous family, her father, the late Johnny Cash’s favorite songs (2009’s The List) — and she’s won acclaim and awards for it all. On The River, Cash explores the American South, her home turf. Cash may live in New York City, but the “river” of the title is the “Mississippi,” and through the album’s 11 original tunes — most written in 2011 — Cash takes the listener on a heart-felt journey through places such as Alabama, Tennessee, Virginia and various southern landmarks — with ghosts such as her father and Robert Johnson lurking in the shadows. With help from a topnotch crew of guests — Kris Kristofferson, John Prine, John Paul White (The Civil Wars), Rodney Crowell, Amy Helm, Gabe Witcher (The Punch Brothers) and others, — Cash mainly alternates between slick country rockers and superbly written mid-tempo gems. The instrumentation is gorgeous throughout — bluesy electric Americana with acoustic flourishes that take you back to the land where Cash was born. Expect more awards. — Jeff Schwachter

ACA’s Winter-Season Crusade By Ray Schweibert
A
s a sort of transposition of the adage “if you build it, they will come,” the Atlantic City Alliance created a 45-foot long “DO AC Nightlife” entertainer coach that brings a taste of the A.C. nightclub scene to others as part of a 10-stop nightlife excursion between A.C. and the Greater Philadelphia area. Decked out with a DJ and full bar, the coach’s first stop was at Golden Nugget’s Haven nightclub on Friday night, Jan. 24. Each of its 10 stops (through Feb. 16) includes a media partner broadcasting the event live to let listeners know what they are missing out on by not savoring A.C.’s smoking year-round nightlife scene. “Atlantic City is a lively destination all year round,” says ACA president Liza Cartmell. “These promotions are designed with specific social media components included in order to showcase all that there is to do here, even during the coldest months. We encourage visitors to enjoy the indoor pools, spas, restaurants, shopping, nightclubs, entertainment and gambling, and share their experiences over social media with their friends.” Another ACA promotional campaign is called “Show Us Your Bling,” largely targeting female travelers looking for group getaways like bachelorette parties. Recently engaged couples are also encouraged to upload photos of their engagement bling at doatlanticcity.com or on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or Vine with the hashtag ShowUsYourBling by March 14. One couple will win bachelor and bachelorette parties at Atlantic City locations that were featured last summer on TV’s The Bachelorette. A third campaign, called “Taste Of Summer” (Feb. 7-March 31), will feature pools, spas and summer cocktails at all 11 of Atlantic City’s casinos, with sand sculpting and beach balls in many of the lobbies reminding guests that it can always feel like summer in the resort. Each of the three ACA campaigns has an advertising, social media, media relations and event component that is part of $700,000 the organization is spending to promote the winter season in A.C. see more online @

Superb Watchin’ Spots
Couldn’t scrape together thousands to catch the game in cold MetLife Stadium? Here’s some hot Super Bowl watching alternatives. By Ray Schweibert • feedback@acweekly.com
W
ill Seattle coach Pete Carroll exact revenge of sorts by winning a Super Bowl in the Meadlowlands, 20 years after lasting just one season as the Jets head coach? Will holding the game in an open, coldweather stadium backfire or go down as a big success? Will the biggest Super Bowl age gap in quarterbacks (nearly 13 years) extol future Hall-of-Famer Peyton Manning or upstart Russell Wilson? Will cerebral Stanford grad Richard Sherman silence cynics with a stellar performance or fail to live down his rant? Answers to these questions will have to satiate South Jersey football fans come Feb. 2 (6:30pm, Fox), as the closest city involved in this year’s tilt is nearly 2,000 miles away. Many local pubs and eateries are running specials for the big game, but here are a few ideas of where gridiron fans might find the most fun and value. Golden Nugget is hosting an ultimate Super Bash Weekend with free admission, food and drink specials at Rush Lounge on
game day. Golden Nugget is also giving away a free Super Bash for 12 people in the center of The Atrium with unlimited food and Bud Light. The winner also gets a 60-inch TV and a Bud Light couch. Go to goldennugget.com/ AtlanticCity and click “upcoming events.” As a prelude to the big game, on Saturday, Feb. 1, from 1-4pm, a Celebrity Tailgate Party will feature former NFL star Marcus Allen at Bally’s Ballroom. Admission is $10. Similar
events are happening at Harrah’s (with Shannon Sharpe) and Caesars (Tim Brown). On game day Sunday, from 11am-1pm at Caesars’ Circus Maximus Theater, former NFL stars Joe Montana and Barry Sanders will share their expertise/predictions preceded by a light brunch. Tickets are $25. Along with the above special events, Caesars Entertainment venues like the X-Bar, Eden Lounge and Bill’s Bar & Burger at Harrah’s; Spirit Bar and Freeze at Showboat; 21 Bar and Toga Lounge at Caesars; and the Mountain Bar and Harry’s Oyster Bar at Bally’s will have Super Bowl specials throughout the day. Scores gentlemen’s club and entertainment complex at Trump Taj Mahal has eight 55-inch HDTVs and a behemoth 12-by-six-foot LED screen. Scores also has stellar game-day packages available that include prizes and giveaways, food and drink specials from $20 per person up to $1,000 for a group of 15. Visit scoresac.com. Trattoria Il Mulino at the Taj will have $5 wines, $6 Absolut drinks, $3 beers, and $5 menu items starting 4:30pm. Broadway Burger Bar at the Tropicana will have a “5 for $5” Happy hour menu starting 4pm with many food and drink specials, over 20 craft beers on tap, and will televise the game on a new 80-inch LCD TV. Other in-casino venues to consider are Hooters, A Dam Good Sports Bar, Firewaters and RiRa at Tropicana; Margaritaville at Resorts;
facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly
Village Whiskey and Mussel Bar at Revel; and Long Bar, Gypsy Bar and B Bar at Borgata, which will have special Super Bowlcentric drinks (pictured) like the Manning Margarita, the Sherminator and others. Ducktown Tavern at Georgia and Atlantic avenues has a plethora of food and drink specials and is giving away a new TV and other prizes. Vagabond Tap House (West End Ave. in A.C.) is doing a free block pool for prizes each quarter. There will also be a DJ at halftime and a $7 Super Bowl menu. Atlantic City Bar & Grill (Pacific and S. Carolina aves.), Wonder Bar (3701 Sunset Ave.), Tun Tavern (One Convention Way), Pic-A-Lilli Pub and Maloney’s Uptown (both on Tennessee Ave.) are other great spots to watch in A.C. Tomatoe’s in Margate will have Happy hour specials all night, NFL jersey giveaways, and special Patron cocktails. Just down Amherst Avenue, Maynard’s Café will be doing drink specials and a complimentary buffet at halftime. Johnny’s Café (9407 Ventnor Ave.) and Ventura’s Greenhouse (106 S. Benson Ave., next to Lucy) are exceptional spots to catch the game in Margate too. In Brigantine, visit St. George’s Pub or the Cellar 32. Other hot spots include Chickie’s & Pete’s in EHT, JD’s in Smithville, Brick House in Mays Landing, Ventura’s Offshore Café in Northfield; or Charlie’s, Gregory’s, the Anchorage, Sandi Pointe, and Clancy’s by the Bay (all in Somers Point). ■ see more online @

in his Volkswagen. The success of “Listen To the Music” — it reached number 11 on Billboard’s Hot 100 — had the desired effect. The album began to sell, and so did followup singles like “Jesus Is Just Alright” and “Rockin’ Down the Highway,” songs that the band will likely perform when it plays a one-night-stand Friday, Jan. 31, at Harrah’s Resort. The Doobies’ third album, The Captain and Me, came out the following year and produced the hit single “China Grove,” which remains a Doobie Brothers signature song, and “Long Train Runnin’,” which Johnston described as a jam song the band played every night before they became popular. The song initially had no lyrics, Johnston said. “Even though we hadn’t written words to it, I’d make them up every night and the song would take on the names of ‘Rosey Pig Mosley’ or ‘Parliament’ or whatever the heck else,” he said. “I finally wrote actual words to it. I finally wrote words in Amigo Studios in L.A. after the track was completely done.” The Doobie Brothers have gone through several iterations over the past four decades. Some members came and went, most famously Michael McDonald, who joined the band in 1975 after Johnston became ill and took time off from the band. McDonald changed the sound of the Doobie Brothers and sang lead vocals on big hits like “Takin’ It To The Street,” “It Keeps You Runnin’” and “What A Fool Believes,” among others. Although they’ve tried to slow down the pace of their touring — Johnston and Simmons are each 65 — there’s been talk over the last several years of another album of original Doobie Brothers tunes. As songwriters, Johnston said he and Simmons have an “organic” style of writing that’s served them well since the early 1970s. “We basically wrote whatever came to mind, and brought it to our rehearsals to work up,” he said. “I was playing a lot of acoustic guitar at that time, which helped me come up with my rhythm style. I tried to figure out how to play guitar and drums at the same time on the one instrument, so that’s what my ‘chucka chucka’ thing is all about. All the rhythm structures behind ‘Long Train Runnin’ and ‘Listen to the Music’ were sort of written on an acoustic guitar, then I applied them to electric. Pat was writing both pickin’-style stuff and straightforward rock tunes. Then we’d figure out complementary guitar parts, harmonies, and lead-guitar parts for each tune, along with drum and bass parts.” ■

ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY • MONTH 00 - 00, 2014
ecoming a member of a rock ‘n’ roll band that recorded albums, had songs on the radio and had people pay money to see them play wasn’t exactly on college student and guitarist Tom Johnston’s career radar in the late 1960s. Sure, he hung out and jammed with Skip Spence of the band Moby Grape in the San Francisco bay area. And Spence turned Johnston on to some other musicians, and they all hung out and played together. But making a full-time living as a musician wasn’t the plan. “We played with no intention to get into the music business as a profession,” Johnson told Vintage Guitar magazine in 2011, just after the release of World Gone Crazy, the Doobie Brothers’ 12th studio album. “I studied graphic design in college, and that’s what I planned on doing. But [Spence] got us into Pacific Studios, where we did our first demo, which was sent to Warner Bros., and on the strength of that demo, the band got signed. That’s when everything started moving forward.” Still, getting signed by a record label and actually being able to cash in on it are worlds apart. The rag-tag band of musicians, who adopted the name Doobie Brothers because it fit the “lifestyle” of the communal home where they were all living — wink wink — were basically living on food stamps, brown rice and the 40 or so bucks they made playing small gigs, when they could find them. Johnston and Pat Simmons, who remain the only original members of the Doobie Brothers, were the band’s principal songwriters. Their self-titled 1971 debut album for Warner Bros. went nowhere and didn’t even crack the Billboard Hot 200 chart. For its second album, Johnston knew the band needed a catchy song with a hook that could be spun off the album as a single and attract attention from the record-buying public. Johnston and Simmons were busy writing material for the band’s sophomore release, Toulouse Street, which Warner Bros. released in the summer of 1972. One of the cuts on that album was “Listen to the Music,” which Johnston wrote in his bedroom in one night. “I was sitting in my bedroom, banging on [the] acoustic [guitar], and I called [our producer] at three in the morning with [the] chord changes to that song pretty much finished,” he recalled. “I even had a lyric idea, which was unusual for me. Lyrics were always the last things I did, and I think I came up with a lot of it all at once.” Johnston remembers hearing the song on the radio for the first time while driving

Her solution? “I started to give soup away to neighbors and friends,” she says. One of those lucky recipients was a daughter’s gym teacher and field hockey coach, who in turn shared it with colleagues. This quickly led to those educators requesting her to provide their midday meal on a regular basis. “I so believed in my product,” she says, and her pay-it-forward instincts had morphed into opportunity. This brings us to the early morning assembly-line precision the Ladle of Luv trio now executes, each sack lunch bearing a recipient’s handwritten name and location. Outside their Ventnor Avenue storefront, formerly Cleo’s Seafood, a blackboard plac-

Donald Duck — and two more with another ice troupe, Falvo returned locally in 1985. After a brief run at real estate, she began waitressing nearby at the former Delores’ Breakfast in Ventnor, currently the location of Hannah G’s. Gravitating towards back of house, Falvo eventually leased Atlantic City’s landmark Chelsea Pub for a short period in the mid1990s. Three children — Julia, 16, Jillian, 12 and Anthony, 8 — later, the energetic Falvo finds herself back in the kitchen, albeit in a most unexpected fashion. Just over a year ago, in December 2012, she decided she needed “to do something smart out of my house.”
ard proudly promotes that day’s soup creations. Once within the cozy shop, customers discover an assortment of similarly handcrafted, small batch artisan foods. Fare like roasted Italian long hot peppers, oven baked gluten free rosemary/garlic/ lemon chicken wings, pulled pork with macand-cheese, Italian delicacy scungilli salad or a turkey burger stuffed with caramelized onions and spinach. A selection of baked goods is available with rotating items like brownies, oatmeal and sugar cookies, biscotti, crumb cake and rugelach. The little eatery is capable of custom catering meals upon request. Recent diners have asked for and received salmon and Chilean sea bass dinner entrées. But it remains those extraordinary soups that are Ladle of Luv’s very foundation. Most are free of both butter and oil, all are low in salt, providing concrete proof that great flavor does not require any of those elements. Those planning Super Bowl events might consider one of two special L.O.L. packages: 48 wings (buffalo or rosemary/lemon/garlic), 48-ounce of soup (a pint and a quart) and an 18-inch flatbread pizza or a second choice of large Caesar salad, two chicken and cheese quesadillas (w/salsa and sour cream) plus twodozen wings, either for $59. They now offer delivery throughout Downbeach, in precious, ribbon-adorned bags looking more like festive holiday gifts than run-of-the-mill take-out. Which all begins to make sense when you hear Denise proclaim: “Instead of sending someone flowers, send them soup!” n

ant to make someone feel better during this inhospitable winter of ’14? We suggest bringing them a fine warming kettle of soup. More specifically, visit Ventnor’s Ladle of Luv (7307 Ventnor Ave.) for an array of beatific broths such as chicken noodle, chicken pot pie, spinach egg drop, tomato basil, seafood bisque, fresh (as in vegan) vegetable, cream of potato, broccoli cheddar, Manhattan clam chowder, chili — in both regular and vegetarian versions — and barley. Owners/operators Denise and Anthony Falvo have cultivated an unusual business, largely through their association with the Ross and Tighe Schools in nearby Margate. Each day, they provide healthful, personalized bag lunches for dozens of teachers, students and staff members there. On a frigid Friday morning, the Falvos, along with staffer Gabrielle Conte, a Stockton student, micromanage their way through close to 50 orders of grilled cheese and chicken noodle soup. Painstakingly arranging individually labeled bags of steaming hot products within insulated packaging, Denise personally transports her wares at just a few minutes before eleven. It’s an astonishing juggling act, watching them put together such a detailed amount of food in under an hour’s time from a kitchen slightly larger than most walk-in closets. But Denise, formerly a professional ice skater and still a skating instructor, seems to have been born with a natural gift for balance. She tells us: “I graduated from Holy Spirit on a Friday night in 1981 and left to appear in Disney on Ice Tuesday morning.” Touring two years with Disney — often as

Favorite Football Movies Filled with both laughter and tears, these pigskin classics score big. By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com
W
ith the Super Bowl coming up this weekend (Sunday, Feb. 2), I had to put together a list of my favorite football flicks, one of which isn’t even a sports’ movie, but it has my favorite cinematic football game of all time so it makes the list. I like my sports movies with a lot of grit and realism, but if a pigskin classic happens to have an uplifting ending, I don’t mind if we get to that happy ending honestly. This list might be more offbeat than most but that’s how I call it in the huddle. 10. We Are Marshall (2006) In 1970, 37 members of Marshall’s football team, plus coaching staff and team boosters, were killed in a plane crash. Starring Matthew McConaughey and Matthew Fox, this film about repairing the emotional pain has the effective, Brian’s Song vibe of an unadulterated sports tearjerker. 9. Friday Night Lights (2004) Before the critically acclaimed TV series about high school football in Texas, there was the critically acclaimed movie, starring Billy Bob Thornton, Connie Britton, Lucas Black, Garrett Hedlund and Tim McGraw, directed by Peter Berg. Like the series, it avoids sentimentality with a gritty mindset. 8. Invincible (2006) As an Eagles fan I had to include the story of a real “Rocky,” Vince Papale (played by Mark Wahlberg), a 30-year-old bartender who attended an open tryout for the Philadelphia Eagles in 1976 and made the team. Greg Kinnear co-stars as rookie coach Dick Vermeil. 7. M*A*S*H (1970) Robert Altman’s amazing movie about doctors in a war zone makes this list for one of the craziest football games in the history of the movies featuring low down dirty play between the MASH unit doctors and their army opponents. 6. Rudy (1993) This one is totally sentimental, but it gets a pass because it is based on the true story of an underdog kid, Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger (fabulous Sean Astin),
facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly
with no size or talent, determined to make the Notre Dame football against all odds. 5. Remember the Titans (2000) Based on a true story, Denzel Washington is great as the tough minded coach brought in to help a newly integrated high school team finding its footing on and off the field in 1971. There’s also a nice turn by Will Patton. 4. The Longest Yard (1974) Forget the 2005 remake. This is the movie that delivers the laughs and the pain starring Burt Reynolds as Paul “Wrecking” Crewe, the leader of a group of convicts who take on their prison guards in an amazing gridiron showdown. 3. The Replacements (2000) Another film with a great underdog vibe and a ton of laughs starring Gene Hackman as a coach pulled from retirement to make a team out of a bunch of substitute players during a strike. His QB is Shane Falco (Keanu Reeves) who helps bring the misfits together. 2. Brian’s Song (1971) If you want to see a room of grown men cry, put this in your DVD player. It’s always on the top of best sports movies on merit, based on the true story about Chicago Bear Brian Piccolo and his battle with cancer, starring James Caan and Billy Dee Williams. 1. North Dallas Forty (1979) From the moment we see Nick Nolte as a veteran football player grimacing with pain when he gets up in the morning, we understand that this movie is as much about the physical and emotional pain of professional football as it is an entertaining and cynical look at professional athletes. n see more online @

Janelle Monáe Goes ‘Electric’ Expect the unexpected as the impressive singer-songwriter takes the stage at Borgata Jan. 31. By Ed Condran • feedback@acweekly.com

JAN. 30 - FEB. 5, 2014 • ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY
T
he Electric Lady is an apt title for Janelle Monáe’s second album. Monáe, who barely hits the fivefoot mark, is diminutive, but as an entertainer she’s larger than life. When Cee-Lo Green was a no-show at a South By Southwest event in 2011, the then underheralded Monáe made the crowd forget about him by rendering a dazzling performance. Monáe can move, engage the audience and above everything else sing like a bird. “I was born to perform,” Monáe tells Atlantic City Weekly. “When I grew up [in Kansas] I did everything I was supposed to do. I did well in school. I did what I had to do around the house and I focused on music.” It’s all worked out well for Monáe, 27, who landed on the map two years ago with her major-label debut The ArchAndroid. That project is a quirky futuristic offering, which takes place in the 28th century. “I can’t say what inspired it,” Monáe says while calling from Houston. “That’s my little secret.” Monáe is back with the bigger, bolder The Electric Lady, released on P. Diddy’s Bad Boy label. But the music impresario isn’t meddling with her projects.. “He’s supportive, which is great but he is hands off,” Monáe says. “That’s the way it has to be. I have to be independent when it comes to creativity. I facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly
“I try to live not only in the present, but particularly in the future. That’s where it’s all at.” don’t understand how anyone can operate without autonomy. I need complete control. Artists with complete control shouldn’t be rare. It’s important to have control for those who are creative.” The Electric Lady, which will be showcased Friday, Jan. 31, at the Borgata, is full of soulful, passionate, stylish pop rock. “I’m trying to take music as far as I can,” Monáe says. “You got to give it all that you got.” Monáe had some key assists throughout Electric Lady from some iconic figures such as Prince and Erykah Badu. The former helps knock the sensual “Give ‘Em What They Love” out of the park. “I’ve always been a huge Prince fan,” Monáe says. “I aspire to be an envelope pusher like him and like David Bowie. Those are artists who change the face of music. Esperanza Spalding, Solange and Miguel also joined Monáe in the studio. “It’s great to have support like I have,”
Monáe says. “I’m very fortunate.” Highlights include the Jackson 5-esque “Can’t Live Without Your Love” and “Q.U.E.E.N.,” a duet with Badu. “You can go back and make forward sounding music,” Monáe says. “You need to know your history and bask in it.” Monáe’s future is incredibly bright. “I’m hopeful as I look ahead,” Monáe says. “I want to raise the bar. I want to be like how Michael Jackson was or how Bruno Mars is. Bruno Mars is one talented singer.” The same can be said for Monáe, who is one of those rare artists who possesses plenty of style and substance. “I try so hard every time I’m in the studio and on stage,” Monáe says. “That’s all you can do.” Monáe believes it was her destiny to sing. “I didn’t find music,” Monáe said. “Music found me. I didn’t search for it. We’ve been together ever since I was a child. There’s not a day that goes by when I don’t sing or write music. I just have that compulsion. The inspiration
is always there and I’m incredibly fortunate that music is my life. I could be doing so many different things. But this is how it turned out for me. It’s been amazing.” The unpredictable Monáe won’t discuss when she was first moved to become a musician. “That memory has been erased from my mind,” Monáe says. “I can’t go back there. I try to live not only in the present, but particularly in the future. That’s where it’s all at.” Monáe believes music takes her fans to another level. “There’s no doubt about that,” Monáe says. “Music can get you high.” And she tries to connect directly with the crowd at every show. “I think that’s so important,” Monáe says. “There shouldn’t be a disconnect. I’m all about a connection. I want my songs to be their drug of choice. I would love it if my songs helped them become euphoric. One of my core values is creating quality performance. When you go onstage, there is a certain standard you have to meet.” And who else meets that standard? “Prince to the 10th power,” Monáe exclaims. “He’s just amazing. Bruno Mars is great. He plays instruments. He has a great voice and he dances. And let’s not forget Stevie Wonder. Those are some of the entertainers who raise the bar to a certain level. I’m just trying my best to play at that level. I want to make the best songs that I can and put on the best shows possible. That’s my responsibility as a recording artist and performer.” When you break down Monáe’s vast arsenal of skills, it’s difficult not to see Broadway as a possibility. But don’t tell Monáe she should be on the Great White Way. “You don’t have to go to Broadway to bring theater to the stage,” Monáe insists. “I’m a writer and performer. I can do what I want and I’m doing it. I don’t have to do what I do on Broadway. There are people out there that are dying to do Broadway and are so suited for Broadway. I wish them the best. I don’t want to do Broadway right now. I’m focused on what I want to do and I love doing it.” ■ see more online @

Teddy Geiger chats about his singer-songwriter tour with Ryan Cabrera and Tyler Hilton, which stops at Stockton Jan. 31. By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com

“The female fans get all excited to have all three of us at one time.” Underage Thinking in 2006 featuring his engaging vocals and surprisingly sophisticated lyrics. He also found a few acting roles along the way in the feature film The Rocker, the cult TV series Love Monkey and in an episode of Royal Pains. This past year Geiger self-produced and released his album The Last Fears, blending pop, a dash of electronica and a hint of country. He also had recent collaborations with Tiësto (as the vocalist on the dance hit “Love & Run”) and One Direction (he co-wrote their track “Little Black Dress”). From the road, Geiger, now 25, spoke with Atlantic City Weekly about the tour, his
new album and his big break on reality TV. This tour came about, explains Geiger, because, “We are represented by the same booking agent so they proposed the idea. I’d done some touring with Tyler before. Actually my first tour ever was with Hillary Duff. Tyler and I both had opening spots on that tour and I feel like I learned the ropes from him. We got along really well and then I met Ryan and he’s awesome.” Since the three had a teen following in their early days, “The female fans get all excited to have all three of us at one time. Right now we are on a little run touring a bunch of colleges. It’s cool because a lot of

n the mid-2000s, the rock/pop side of the music business was in a singersongwriter mode and three of the more popular breakout stars of this era were Ryan Cabrera, Teddy Geiger and Tyler Hilton. For the past couple of years when they could arrange their schedules, the three singers have been touring together singing their big hits: Ryan Cabrera’s “On The Way Down,” “True,” “Shine On”; Teddy Geiger’s “For You I Will (Confidence),” “These Walls” and Tyler Hilton’s “Glad” and “Missing You.” Geiger, born in Buffalo and raised in Rochester, N.Y., began writing songs when he was just 10 years old and got his first big break when he was a finalist on the VH1 reality TV series In Search of the New Partridge Family in 2004. This led to the then 16-year-old’s acclaimed debut album
those girls, when my first record came out, they were in middle school and getting into high school and now they are in college.” Geiger’s self-released current album, The Last Fears, is available on iTunes. The iTunes route seems to be the standard modus operandi for independent artists in the Internet-driven world of modern music. “You have a lot more freedom to self produce and the cost is much lower,” says Geiger. “Growing up I wanted to be a writer and producer; that’s always been something that I worked on since I was 11 and got my first four-track recorder, then Pro Tools and a laptop and I ended up building a studio in my basement.” Geiger explains that he first got interested in music by listening to the alternative rock stations in Rochester and hearing bands such as Weezer and Ben Folds Five. “Those were the two big ones,” he says. “Also, when I was a kid my grandfather showed me how to play [piano] and I took [professional] lessons. I never really stuck to the lesson plan but I learned the basics. I loved to sit at the piano and play for hours, not really playing anything but making things up. Then I started writing music when I was 10 or 11.” Talking about his TV reality launch, Geiger remembers: “That was crazy. I had been starting to play shows, and doing more and more recording and school was becoming less important to me. I’d stay up late [working on music] and be exhausted at school and my mom knew she had to figure something out. Then she saw an ad on VH1 for In Search of the Partridge Family.” As a finalist on the show, Geiger traveled to Los Angeles, which provided an invaluable boot camp with an acting teacher and a singing coach. “It was a great experience learning about the business.” ■
