ou don’t normally expect many newsworthy revelations in the waning days of winter in a resort region, but the Atlantic City area has defied the normal state of early March with a quartet of announcements. We’ll start with an announcement that is normal for this time of year, the extension of Atlantic City Restaurant Week. This year, 25 restaurants have announced extending the Restaurant Week fixed price threecourse menu, which is $15.13 for lunch and $33.13 for dinner. Most are continuing the menu for a week, including The Reserve at Bally’s, Smithville Inn in Smithville, the Atlantic Grill at Caesars, the Palm at Tropicana and the Back Bay Ale House. Revel, despite its economic woes, has had a major success with its HQ Nightclub and now Angel Management Group and EMM Group will debut HQ Beach Club this May. The 45,000 square-foot beach club, located on the Boardwalk level of the resort, will feature multiple floors. Neil Moffitt, CEO of Angel Management, says, “HQ Beach Club [will] deliver the unique day-into-night experiences that we’ve envisioned for Revel since the beginning.” Last week it was also announced that the 40/40 Club, co-owned by Jay-Z, has given up its lease and has closed for good. The nightclub closed Oct. 27 to prepare for Hurricane Sandy and never reopened. The club made its A.C. debut at The Walk in October 2005. Finally, Pinnacle Entertainment has been trying to sell its prime real estate block bordered by Indiana Avenue, Pacific Avenue, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and the Boardwalk since 2010. In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the company said it had a buyer for the former site of the Sands Casino, with the price being $30.6 million. Pinnacle bought the property for $270 million. The site is currently being used for the ARTlantic public art display sponsored by the Atlantic City Alliance.

It’s always a treat when 63-year-old singer-songwriter and guitar wizard Richard Thompson releases a new batch of tunes. Sometimes lovely, sometimes cruel and cutting, sometimes at the same time, Thompson’s songs about love fill his new album, Electric. The creepy old man in the album’s opener “Stony Ground” may remind one of “Aqualung” and the opening riff to the tongue-in-cheek “Stuck on a Treadmill” may sound Zeppelin-esque, but Thompson’s killer melodies, exceptional lyricism and profound guitar playing are all his own. It’s special when you hear an instrument being played and you can tell from only a few notes who’s playing and this has always been the case with Thompson. Electric, recorded in Nashville at Buddy Miller’s home studio, is as consistent an album as you can get and one that should garner the Scottish music vet some more respect outside his cult followers and the NPR crowd. Standout tracks include the gorgeous “Salford Sunday,” the pulsating “Straight and Narrow,” the sparse “The Snow Goose” and the rockin’ “Good Things Happen to Bad People.” — Jeff Schwachter

St. Patty’s Bashes

One of the biggest party weekends of the year, A.C. does St. Patrick’s Day proud. By Ray Schweibert • feedback@acweekly.com

aith ‘n’ Begorrah, there will be lots of (sham)rockin’ and rollin’ before, during and after the annual St. Patrick’s Day Boardwalk parade Saturday, March 16 (1pm) this year, as Atlantic City heads into the holiday when everybody’s Irish. Below are a few ideas of where and when to have some fun this weekend. And remember, in the words of Sigmund Freud, “[The Irish] is one race of people for whom psychoanalysis is of no use whatsoever.” Revel has a property-wide pub crawl on Saturday (2-10pm) and Sunday (noon-8pm). With the purchase of a $49 wristband (at Revel’s box office or through Ticketmaster. com), revelers receive a St. Patrick’s Day themed cocktail, beer, treat or Voss bottled water at 10 participating restaurants and retailers. All crawlers will also receive complimentary admission to Ivan Kane’s Royal Jelly Burlesque Nightclub. Revel is also offering a special “crawl, sleep and eat” package. Caesars Entertainment properties are also on board for the holiday, as Mountain Bar at Bally’s Wild Wild West will have $2 Jameson shots and $3 Guinness drafts, the Toga Bar at Caesars and Backstage at Showboat will offer $5 Guinness pints and $6 Jameson specials. On Friday night, local favorite Seven Stone will perform at a pre-parade party at Golden Nugget’s Live Bar. There will be Jameson and select beer specials, and $500 in cash and prizes given out for the most festive Irish attire. The following night, and across the street at Borgata, the band Gypsy Wisdom will headline a party at the Gypsy Bar starting 9pm Saturday and will feature drink specials and giveaways. At the Ri Ra Irish Pub in the Tropicana Quarter, where “every day is St. Patrick’s Day,” live music will be going all weekend starting Thursday, March 14, with house band Eleven Eleven at 11pm. On Friday it’s Steamroller Picnic (11pm) and Saturday it’s Side Arm (11pm). On Sunday Ri Ra hosts its inaugural St. Paddy’s Day Plunge at 10am (to benefit Sandy relief efforts) followed by live music all day, including the Reilly Brothers at noon, Irish dancers and bagpipers, DJ Sparkles between sets, and the Galway Guild starting 9pm. The Reilly Brothers will also perform at Maynard’s in Margate on Saturday at 10pm and Sunday at 8:30pm. A party will be going all day both days at Maynard’s that also features Clancy’s Pistol at 5pm Saturday and Shamus 4pm Sunday. Also on Amherst Avenue in Margate, Sofia

restaurant will have a St. Pat’s celebration in its bar area on Sunday from 4-6pm with music, food and drink specials. Planet Rose Karaoke Lounge in the Trop Quarter will be featuring a Jameson shot and pint of Guinness (or your choice of beer) for a $10 combo price now through March 17. The Boneyard in A.C. will have live music all weekend, including the bands the Recovery, Circadian Frequency, Dupe DeVille and the Dirty Cut on Friday, and the Improbables, the Blessed Muthas, St. James & the Apostles and DJ G Force on Saturday. Music starts 8pm and the cover is $5. The Diving Horse Cabaret is hosting the DJ Diamond Kuts St. Patty’s Day Bash on Sunday, March 17, at 10pm. The cover is $15 in advance, and for VIP bottle service or to reserve space, call 374-6543. St. George’s Pub in Brigantine has weekend-long festivities planned, including the Nae Breeks Pipe and Drum Band at 4:30pm Saturday, the No Leaf Clover Bagpipers doing three sets Sunday starting 3pm, with DJ Deanna J spinning Irish songs between sets, Guinness and Jameson specials and lots of authentic Irish fare both days. At Clancy’s By the Bay in Somers Point, its second annual St. Pat’s Celebration will feature an Irish string band from 4:30-7:30pm and plenty of food and drink specials. Also in Somers Point Gregory’s Restaurant & Bar has a bountiful amount of Irish fare on tap the entire weekend, and its Half-&-Half Beer Float of Murphy’s Stout floated on any pint draft is $5.50. Further south in Cape May, the Boiler Room at Congress Hall (congresshall.com) will feature the renowned John Byrne Band on Saturday, March 16, from 9pm-1am. There will be no cover charge and plenty of St. Paddy’s Day food and drink specials. For more info, call 888-944-1816. North Wildwood will have its annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade at noon Saturday, and its annual Patrick’s Day Block Party (on Pacific Avenue between Spencer and Lincoln avenues) all day Saturday (till 11pm) and Sunday (10pm) featuring free live entertainment, vendors, games and family activities inside a large heated tent. The Tartan Terrors play at the Levoy Theater in Millville on Saturday night (8pm), March 16, behind the recent release of their 15-song CD Whiskey Before Breakfast. The band blends Irish music, comedy and dance, and features a two-time World Champion bagpiper, drums from around the world and a searing guitar player. Tickets are $25. See Levoy.net. ■

he Red Rocker says he’s losing his beachfront watering hole in Atlantic City. Sammy Hagar, whose famous name has lured guests to Sammy’s Beach Bar at Bally’s Atlantic City for the past three summers, won’t be back for a fourth season. The singer, songwriter and former lead singer of Van Halen says on his Web site that his company has been unable to reach an agreement with Caesars Entertainment, which owns Bally’s, to get the beach bar up and running this summer. “Following months of ongoing discussions, Sammy Hagar has regretfully been unable to come to terms with Caesars Entertainment on the rebuilding of the Sammy Beach Bar & Grill at Bally’s Atlantic City Hotel and Casino,” Hagar says in a statement posted on his Web site March 8. “Since opening in May 2010, the restaurant had been a popular Boardwalk destination until it was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. While Hagar continues to explore a new partnership in the region, he and his Hagar Family Foundation will remain committed to the Atlantic City community through which he has supported local children’s charities for the last several years.”

Hagar, however, may have over-exaggerated Sandy’s impact on the beach bar. The bar, which sits on the ocean side of the sand dune system that shielded most of Atlantic City’s Boardwalk from the storm’s catastrophic damage, did sustain some damage. But it wasn’t destroyed. However, there’s been no indication from Bally’s whether the beach bar will open this summer, with or without Hagar’s name. Although Caesars Entertainment has never announced it, several sources have confirmed the world’s largest gaming company is looking to sell two of its four Atlantic City properties — Bally’s and Showboat. Over the past couple of months, prospective purchasers have kicked the tires at both Boardwalk casino resorts. Bally’s has had a beach bar at its center Boardwalk location for years, but it wasn’t until 2010 that it partnered with Hagar to lend his name to the facility. The deal came about because of the friendship between Hagar and Don Marrandino, the Atlantic City native and former Las Vegas casino executive who returned to his hometown in 2009 to become president of the eastern division of Caesars Entertainment. Marrandino struck a licensing agreement

with his rock ‘n’ roll buddy to locate a branch of his Sammy Beach Bar brand at Bally’s. Marrandino left Caesars in December. Hagar never actually spent much time at the bar. He showed up about once a summer and never stayed very long, usually just long enough time to kibitz briefly with the staff and take a few pictures with guests. Even if Bally’s does open the beach bar this summer — with or without a famous name — Atlantic City will still be down one beach watering hole this summer. When it closed its beach bar last summer, Trump Entertainment said it was dismantling the largest in the city for good as it prepared to sell the center city casino hotel. Indeed, the company announced last month it had reached an agreement to sell the property to Cuban-American entrepreneur Alex Meruelo and his Meruelo Group, a diverse holding company whose assets include everything from construction companies to real estate to hospitality brands. That deal is expected to close no sooner than May 31, which wouldn’t give the new owner much time to get a beach bar up and running in time for the season. However, the city is gaining a new beach bar and then some. The Landshark Bar & Grill, which is part of Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville brand, is expected to open

on the beach at Resorts Casino Hotel over Memorial Day weekend. That facility will include both indoor and outdoor bars and multiple party pits and other attractions. *** Meanwhile, if there are any major music festivals coming to Atlantic City this summer, they’re still flying well under the radar. Last year at this time, promoters were already selling tickets and travel packages for Phish, which headlined at the former municipal airport last June 15-17. And plans had already been announced — and tickets were being sold — for metal music gods Metallica and their Orion Music + More lifestyle festival, which was held at Bader Field June 23-24. But so far, with the exception of a justannounced, one-day event June 1 that will pay tribute to Vietnam War-era veterans, there’s nothing on the Bader Field calendar that’s been confirmed for June through August. However, the promoter of “Life In Color,” the New Year’s Eve electronic dance music party at Bader Field, said he’s interested in bringing an even bigger EDM show to the field this summer, but nothing has been signed. n

Day Trips in Atlantic City Area From Smithville to Cape May and beyond, some day-trip tips as the weather gets warmer. By Amanda Hopkins • feedback@acweekly.com

ay trips provide an alternative to vacationing, and are perfect for families who don’t have the money, the resources, or the vacation time for a week away from home. Luckily, for those residing in Atlantic County and the surrounding areas, many day trips are just a hop, skip and a jump away, thanks to several forms of public transportation in the area. As the weather warms up, you may be planning to go on a day trip of your own. Here are some suggestions:

Delaware — Hop on the Cape MayLewes Ferry and find yourself in Delaware, where tons of tourist attractions await. The ferry allows riders to bring their vehicles or just bring themselves, and the ride takes just under 90 minutes. Once in Delaware, history buffs might enjoy stopping at Fort Delaware State Park where Confederate prisoners of war were housed in the 1800s, or at one of Delaware’s beaches. Delaware is home of Fenwick Island Beach, Dewey Beach, and Rehoboth Beach — just to name a few — so spend a couple hours of the trip enjoying the sun and sand. Close your trip with a stop at the Fenwick Island Lighthouse.

Smithville — Stop by Smithville for a fun day close to home. We recommend visiting the Shoppes in Smithville; it will keep you busy for hours. Mid-shopping, take a break for lunch at Fred and Ethel’s, a quant restaurant within the historic Smithville square. After, you may even choose to ride one of the paddleboats on the lake.

Cape May Co. Zoo

Pilesgrove — For a unique experience, take a trip to Pilesgrove. First, stop by the Cowtown Flea market, where hundreds of vendors have set up shop with merchandise as low as a few dollars. There is something for everyone at Cowtown, including movies, clothing, produce, and more. Before leaving, be sure to stop at the Amish vendor for a famous pretzel-dog. When the day turns to night, it is time for the Cowtown Rodeo (in season)! Located right next-door to the flea market, a traditional rodeo offers a true taste of the old Wild West. The rodeo begins in late May and runs until September; the show starts at 7:30pm. Pilesgrove is about one-hour from Mays Landing.

Many day trips from the Atlantic County area are just a hop, skip and a jump away. Cape May — Cape May is just a 30-40 minute drive from Atlantic City, which makes it a great place to day trip, especially if you have kids. With many attractions and shops, Cape May has something for everyone. One suggestion is to visit both the Cape May Zoo and Historic Cold Spring Village during the trip. The Cape May Zoo runs on donation only; admission is free, but it is suggested that guests donate a few dol-

lars. With several types of animals on site, it will take about an hour and a half to tour the zoo. After the zoo, it’s just a short ride to Cold Spring Village, where staff members reenact life during 1789-1840. A school, a bakery, and a gift shop are just some of the stops during the tour. Cold Spring also hosts different events during the year, which are worth checking out.

Philadelphia, Pa. — Getting to Philadelphia has never been so convenient. Many cringe at the mere thought of driving to Philadelphia and finding themselves in bumper-to-bumper traffic, but with a train station located in Egg Harbor City, Absecon and Atlantic City, Atlantic County locals and visitors to the area can get to the City of Brotherly Love stress-free in one hour. The train stations (30th Street Station or Market East) are located centrally to the best parts of Philadelphia. Get off at Market East and walk just a mile to reach the historic part of Philly, where visitors can see the Liberty Bell. A few more blocks away is South Street, which is infamous for its eateries and unique shops. Other hot spots include museums such as the Franklin Institute, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Eastern State Penitentiary. Martin’s love of music goes back to his earliest days as a comedian when he would use his banjo for humor in his act. The Rangers, who have performed at the Grand Ole Opry, released its first collaborative record with Martin, Rare Bird Alert, which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Bluegrass chart. Restaurant Week Redux

Back for a fifth year, Atlantic City’s Restaurant Week has not only been a boon for area eateries, but for businesses of all sorts during a sorely needed time. By Frank Gabriel • feedback@acweekly.com

he success of 2013’s Atlantic City Restaurant Week was made apparent to this writer during its first few

hours. Arriving Sunday, March 3 — sans reservation — at Margate landmark Steve and Cookie’s, we found ourselves turned away just past 6pm and told they wouldn’t have any availability for two hours. That sounds more like the calendar should read July or August, not a blustery Sunday on the first weekend of March. But such is the farreaching impact that this hugely successful promotion has generated. Despite that initial setback, we still managed to have a glorious, gastronomically sating week, which instead commenced a few blocks north at Ventnor’s Sage. From a diverse, creative menu of apps we chose crispy artichoke hearts and tempura oysters. Thin strips of Italy’s unofficial national vegetable were prodigious in portion and gently fried until just crusted, still tender, delightfully chewy. My oysters, five pretties presented in shells atop a worthwhile seaweed salad, proved a divine opening salvo. Following up with a vegetarian risotto entrée, loaded with strips of pepper, carrot and shredded Brussels sprouts — currently the trendiest veggie known to man — we enjoyed the light, fragrant rice of this northern Italian classic. My partner’s scallops, five in total, were ringed about a sauté of Brussels sprouts (see what I mean?) and shiitake mushrooms in an apple cider reduction, sided by truffled potato croquettes. Though the kitchen was out of several desserts by the time we finished, I thoroughly enjoyed a golden dome of luscious hazelnut panna cotta. The next stop on my tour was lunch at Margate’s Bocca, one of the brightest new

If you haven’t visited The Reserve at Bally’s you are missing out. eateries to appear locally in some time. While my lobster bisque and California chicken club were exemplary, staffers seemed to be having difficulty handling the additional midday rush generated by Restaurant Week. All things considered a nice problem to have, and again reiterating the impact of this event throughout our region. Remember, not only food providers benefit. Foot traffic generated by RW diners also generates an enormous amount of ancillary revenue, at precisely the time when many businesses are most in need. During our preview column two weeks ago we implored you to use the opportunity created by RW to visit the Taj Mahal’s

Robert’s Steak House. Keeping our own council, we supped there Tuesday, March 5. The glamorous room was nearly half full, nice for a weekday in early March. Both appetizers arrived as thoughtfully crafted pieces of culinary art. My spinach and ricotta ravioli — large, pliant squares of pasta bathed in a shiny brown butter sauce — were tossed with toasted walnuts. Chilled spring pea soup, a delicate pastel hue and seasonally on-point, was finished with a pale log of lobster salmon sausage topside. This was a brave plating, cold soup while still very much in the depths of winter, but it worked marvelously, providing a welcome hint of spring’s imminent arrival.

My New York strip steak, cut thinner than those from the regular menu, was still probably well over 12 ounces, lusty and beefy. The best part of dining at Robert’s is the overall experience; an amuse bouche of crostini starts the proceedings and a tart basil sorbet intermezzo precedes entrees. After two fabulous desserts, chocolate pudding and vanilla bean panna cotta, diners are further presented with a tiny box of chocolates to take home. We lunched Thursday at Carmine’s in The Quarter at Tropicana. We’ve come to really love this place, and their half-portion lunches are still larger than most places’ dinner plates. After apps of sausage-stuffed mushrooms and a huge grilled Portobello salad, we each finished half of two pasta mains, toting out enough rigatoni and ravioli for dinner. The highlight of our entire week was provided via Thursday’s dinner at Bally’s The Reserve. Seriously, folks, if you haven’t visited this blue and golden hued space, the domain of precocious young executive chef Joseph Muldoon, you are really missing out. Heady stuff like cream of cauliflower soup with poached bay scallops, an authentic “salade Nicoise” featuring herb-crusted tuna and an entrée of crab-stuffed Arctic flounder with piquillo pepper coulis demonstrate the remarkable chops in Muldoon’s arsenal. We rounded out our week with dinner at another quality BYOB, Somers Point’s Latz’s. A corn fritter app, served pancake style as two perfect discs, brilliantly paired with maple syrup provided in a small pitcher. My fat crab-cake entree, laden with jumbo lump chunks, was plated with sticky, warm slaw and a potato dumpling. Run-D.M.C. to rock the house for only the third time in a dozen years March 16 at Borgata. Interview with Rev. Run. By Jeff Schwachter • feedback@acweekly.com

EVENT INFO “Classic Run-D.M.C., lots of energy, and just D.M.C. and me being so on point that I think people are going to be like, ‘Wow! These guys haven’t skipped a beat,’” says Run. “That’s what happened at Made in America. We got great reviews, our picture in Rolling Stone — I was very grateful for all of that positive feedback. It leads us to believe that we know what we’re doing still!” Asked about one of the strongest tracks ever recorded — in any genre — dating back to the Run-D.M.C.’s self-titled 1984 release, “Rock Box,” Run recalls vividly how that song came about. “I remember it clearly,” says Run. “We went to the studio, just me and D alone, to put down this drum beat that D had in his mind that he couldn’t get rid of. [Run starts singing the iconic drumbeat.] He thought it was the best thing he ever heard when it came into his head. We went to rap over that — and kind of snuck into the studio early to get our thing going before Russell and Larry Smith were there, who were the producers, and Larry walks in, hears the beat and he pulls out this [synthesizer] type machine, that could play keyboards, and he just put down this bass line. [Run starts singing the riff that would become such an important part of the song.] And we all look at each other and we’re like, ‘That’s too soft.’ And Russell was like, ‘It just doesn’t have any balls to it.’ You know? It just like ruined our big, mean drumbeat. And we were all probably high and Larry gets mad and is like, ‘What are you crazy? It’s not soft!’ He turns

“But never say never ... to take a line from Justin Beiber.” Although Run-D.M.C. hasn’t performed live much at all since the murder of Mizell, Run has been to Atlantic City several times as a DJ, working with DJ Ruckus at Borgata. “Yeah, I’ve been there a lot,” says Simmons. “I run around DJing and it’s really fun. It’s really rewarding on so many levels. I started out as a DJ. I was a DJ for Kurtis Blow, I DJed in my attic. The DJ was everything. That’s why if you see Krush Groove the movie, when I say, ‘Now DJ Run’s my name.’ I was DJ Run, not just Run. Now I’m Rev. Run, but I’m also Run and DJ Run.” Over the past 10 years there has been a big rise in the DJ as an international star and the center of the show. It’s almost like it’s coming back to the 1970s and early ’80s when the “DJ was the thing.” “It’s coming full circle,” says Run. What does Run like about putting his DJ cap back on? “It’s fun,” he says without hesitation. “It surprises people when they see Ruckus scratching then he passes the turntable to me and I start scratching and then I get on the mike and then do more scratching. It’s just fun. It reminds me of being young. I just kill it. I love it. So, what can people expect at the RunD.M.C. show in Atlantic City at Borgata?

Then they got, I think it was Eddie Martinez, and they put all these real guitars down. And then we just made some craziness.” While Run-D.M.C. is ready to rock it out on stages, Run, who taught himself how to DJ in his attic in Queens, remembers how important those formative years were for him. “As a kid my brother [and his friends] used to go into the attic and they had this psychedelic room and I remember hearing [names such as] Gil Scott-Heron a lot. I had to be 10, 11, 12 years old. I remember this record they used to play all the time. [Run starts singing, searching for the melody]: ‘What ever happened to the voices?’ I don’t remember how it went, but they played it over and over. I don’t know what that song was, [but it had the lyric ‘Vietnam’ in it] — I feel like Googling it right now. Anyway, when they got older and moved on I DJed in that same attic. It became my attic. I had turntables and I was just working by myself." ■ see more online @

It is pretty weird watching Jay’s children DJ a Run-D.M.C. show, throwin’ on ‘Walk This Way’ — one of the guy’s names is DJ JamMaster Json and his other son is Dasmatic and they are really good.” One of the most important and respected rap groups of all-time, helping to fuse rock and rap together, using live instruments and barely sampling, focusing on albums rather than just singles and creating a whole new sound for the music, Run-D.M.C. hit at the perfect time to put rap on the mainstream map and expand both the reach and the breadth of the genre. As the All Music Guide’s Stephen Thomas Erlewine writes, “More than any other hiphop group, Run-D.M.C. [is] responsible for the sound and style of the [hip-hop] music.” Big props, yes, but Run-D.M.C. is a big act in the history of music. The Hollis, Queens (N.Y.) crew not only helped inspire countless musicians in the 1980s and beyond, but, along with contemporary acts such as LL Cool J, Kurtis Blow and the Beastie Boys, brought rap onto the mainstream charts and into the living rooms of suburbia. Here are a few more impressive RunD.M.C. stats: The group was the first in hiphop to have a gold album (Run–D.M.C., 1984) and be nominated for a Grammy. It was also the first rap group to earn a platinum record (King of Rock, 1985), to earn a multiplatinum certification (Raising Hell, 1986) to have videos on MTV, to appear on American Bandstand and the cover of Rolling Stone. Run–D.M.C. was named “The Greatest Hip Hop Group of All Time” by MTV.com in 2007 and “Greatest Hip Hop Artist of All Time” by VH1.

t’s been roughly 30 years since RunD.M.C.’s self-titled debut album came out on Profile Records. It’s also been about 12 years since the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-inducted rap group has begun playing in front of a live audience again. This hiatus is most likely linked to the shooting death of the group’s revered third member and DJ “Jam Master Jay” (Jason Mizell) back in 2002 inside a Queens, N.Y. recording studio. The first time Joseph “Run” Simmons and Darryl “D.M.C.” McDaniels got back together for a show was last September’s Made in America festival in Philadelphia. Run-D.M.C.’s March 16 show in Atlantic City at Borgata will only be the third time the group has performed in a dozen years (Run-D.M.C. also played the Fun Fun Fun Festival in Austin, Texas in November 2012) although Run has appeared as DJ Run at various clubs around the country in recent years. He’s also kept himself in the limelight with a popular MTV show, Run’s House, which aired from 2005-2009. On joining forces with D.M.C. again for the Made in America show Run tells Atlantic City Weekly it wasn’t difficult. “I got a call, D.M.C. said ‘yes’ and it was that simple.” Run says the group has a couple more engagements lined up, but don’t expect RunD.M.C. to release new tracks anytime soon. “But never say never,” says Run, “to take a line from Justin Beiber.” Run says it “came pretty quick” for he and D.M.C. to decide to go on with Run-D.M.C. last year for a few shows. “We just sort of let it be,” he says. “Because we don’t have our DJ, we actually bring Jay’s sons with us and they DJ sometimes

In 2009, Run–D.M.C. became just the second rap group to ever be inducted, after Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Run recalls working on that revolutionary first album in 1982, 1983. “You know some of the records came out first as singles. I think ‘Sucker MC’s,’ ‘It’s Like That’ — they came out as singles because there weren’t really rap albums before that album. So we added those singles to the album.” But at the time of recording those initial singles, the young members of Run-D.M.C. didn’t even know the extent of how far the singles would go. “We didn’t really know we were working on an album,” says Simmons. “But [the record company, Profile Records] asked [my brother] Russell [Simmons] for an album. And that was unheard of at the time.” At the time, Russell Simmons was an upand-coming hip-hop promoter in New York and would get his brother and Run-D.M.C. a record deal (before becoming a superstar entrepreneur, business magnate and entertainment mogul). “You can check the history books but I don’t think there was a rap album before Run-D.M.C. Grandmaster Flash may have had one, I’m not sure, but we were one of the first. I remember hearing we had the first rap album when I was younger, it may not be right, but I used to hear that a lot.” Run says the 30-year-old album still feels great to perform live. “It certainly rocked at Made in America [in Philadelphia, Sept. 2, 2012; Run-D.M.C.’s first concert in a dozen years]. It was great. We did everything; it was pretty amazing.”

ou can be sure of three things in life: death, taxes and an Elvis tribute as the finish at a Legends in Concert performance. However, surprise, surprise, with the recent return of Legends in Concert at Bally’s Atlantic City, Elvis has left the building. After taking the winter off, the show has returned with a line-up that features a finale with the Blues Brothers, and judging by the reaction on Sunday, March 10, the audience was quite satisfied with this change. But Elvis fans don’t worry. He will be back in May. That is the word from the manager of the Atlantic City Legends’ show, Mark Kogan. “There have been Legends’ shows without Elvis before,” explains Kogan. “It’s a way of introducing new people and also, the Blues Brothers (Eric Martin as Elwood, Carmen Romano as Jake) are such a strong act to close the show since they are so high spirited. People are enjoying the show in a different way. We found out in previous locations that we are okay without an Elvis, but to all the people that love Elvis, Elvis will be back in the building in May. “The goal always at a Legends’ show is that people come out of the show feeling good, that they have been touched by the music.” The current run of Legends was supposed to feature Coty Alexander as Madonna, as well as the Blues Brothers, Mitch Adams as Elton John, Terry Forsythe as Stevie Wonder and Stacy Whitton as Shania Twain. Explains Kogan, “We’re hoping to hear soon when she will be ready to join the show.” In her stead, the versatile Whitton is doing double duty. She is opening the show as Marilyn Monroe, and then returns right before the finale as Shania Twain. Kogan was delighted that she was willing — and able — to double her workload. “She’s done this in several locations in Branson, Mo, and other venues. This time it was because of illness but in other cases, it was because she is so versatile. She also does Katy Perry and Martina McBride. We were able to [adjust to Coty’s illness] thanks to Stacy’s abilities and plug in Marilyn, who is a fan favorite with a lot of people.” As for the summer run, “We’ll have an Elvis, returning favorite Tom Jones, Tina Turner, and a newer star, Katy Perry. We’re always looking for new superstar tribute artists.” He adds that most of the newer performers do their auditions in Las Vegas, but that one enterprising young lady came to Bally’s with an audition tape. “Rainere Martin, we sent the tape to Vegas, she auditioned there and wound up in the show here, doing Donna Summer.” ■

‘Legends in Concert’: A Review Just as the weather is finally warming up, Legends in Concert has returned to heat up the stage at Bally’s. Entertainment options have been particularly scarce this winter, so the return of the popular show, the longest running in the history of Atlantic City, is important since it offers solid midweek entertainment as well as weekend shows. And, while the focus is on the tribute artists who do all their own singing, let us not forget that Legends’ is the rare revue that has a live band, a foursome that keeps the music playing, along with six excellent dancers who contribute to the presentation. Opening the evening is “Miss Double Duty,” Stacy Whitton, as Marilyn Monroe. Her Monroe tribute included a few songs like “Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend,” and “I Wanna Be Loved

By You,” but is actually more of a comic tour-de-force. She goes into the audience and has the crowd laughing as she chatted with several gentlemen in the audience and their ladies, and then brought a lucky man on stage to have some fun with an on-the-lap rendition of “My Heart Belongs to Daddy.” Next up was Mitch Adams as Elton John. His resemblance to John is uncanny, including the singer’s cheeky smile and mannerisms. His tribute includes such classic EJ tunes as “Crocodile Rock,” “I’m Still Standing,” a medley of “Candle in the Wind”/“Can You Feel the Love” and “Saturday Night’s Alright (For Fighting).” Elton John paved the way but the energy level really jumped with the appearance of Terry Forsythe as Stevie Wonder. He elevated the night to another level with an incredible tribute to Wonder which began with “Sir Duke” and kept the dancing-in-theaisle vibe going with “Superstition” and “Sign, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours.” He slowed down for a medley of “You’re the Sunshine of My Life” and “My Cherie Amour” then ended his segment in full tilt R&B rock mode with a dynamic “Uptight (Everything’s All Right).” Next up was Stacy Whitton, Part II, as she did her scheduled Shania Twain tribute. Whitton’s Marilyn Monroe was a substitution for the ill Coty Alexander, who is scheduled to perform as Madonna when she is feeling better. Whitton rocks out as the country legend with “Man, I Feel Like A Woman,” “From This Moment” and “If You’re Not In It For Love.” The evening’s final performers were Eric Martin as Elwood, and Carmen Romano as Jake, the Blues Brothers, which, is in essence, a tribute to a tribute — a fictional tribute created in a sketch on Saturday Night Live featuring Dan Akyroyd and the late Jim Belushi that has maintained its appeal from its ’70s SNL origins through several movies and beyond. Martin and Romano not only sing, they dance with reckless abandon and Martin plays a mean harmonica as they blast the showroom with the Blues Brothers classics “Soul Man,” “Do You Love Me,” “Land of a 1000 Dances,” a tongue-incheek “Rawhide”/TV theme song medley and of course the big finish with “Shout.” — LH see more online @

EVENT INFO Having toured for most of the last 40 years, are you seeing more of a mix in terms of ages in the audience? Definitely, all kinds of ages. Occasionally I get e-mails or Facebook messages saying stuff like “I’m 15 and can’t get into your show, can you get me in backstage?” or things like that. Things like that happen. We get the original fans and because of the kind of music we play, and because some people just prefer to listen to classic rock rather than what’s current, we’re getting many younger fans too. I mean, if you like lead guitar you’re coming to the right place when you come to see us. If you prefer Katy Perry you’re not going to hear much [guitar riffs]. And that’s nothing disparaging against her, I think she’s great. Our music is just a different genre.

Are you and the band in the middle of a tour right now? We’re never in the middle of a tour. We do mostly weekend work. Occasionally we may go out for an extended period of time of maybe 10 days and could be off for two straight weeks. We basically give our management the

OK to book us from this period to that period, and pick and choose time off whenever we think we need it. In the meantime we do about 80 shows per year as opposed to the ’70s when we might have been doing over 200. Your Web site (blueoystercult.com) has the band doing a series of tour dates in Australia, and this will the first time the band has ever performed there. Why is that? We’re leaving around April 15 and we’ll be doing six shows in nine days. We just never really got a good offer to perform there in years past. It’s really just that simple. In the last two or three years we got a couple of good offers, and thought now was the time. There’s a Web site called Hot Rails to Hull (hotrails.co.uk). It’s a database of every BÖC gig anyone can remember, and it’s run by fans in England. It’s a really good site that contains articles from several of our ex crew members who have worked for us for many years. It’s kind of a fun site where anyone who has a leftover ticket stub from a show long ago, or interesting information from a past show, they can put it on there. Fans can actually post right to the site? I think they send it to a moderator and he decides if it’s worthy. Personnel-wise, the only difference I see with BÖC since you were last in Atlantic City (in 2009) is that Kasim Sulton took over on bass. How is he working out with the band? Well Kasim’s been with us about a yearand-a-half now and he’s an exceptional musician who was in the original Utopia with Todd Rundgren [of Upper Darby, Pa.], and for the last 10 years he was Meatloaf’s bass player.

I know BÖC would occasionally do shows under the name of its forerunner, Soft White Underbelly. Was that to sort of go incognito when being booked into smaller clubs or venues? Not really. Back in our heyday, when we were a coliseum band, we’d occasionally do an Underbelly show. It was sort of tongue-incheek. For instance there was a club on Long Island called My Father’s Place and it was pretty small — maybe 300 or 400 [capacity] — and we would go in there as Underbelly, but everyone would know. And for those who didn’t, the radio stations would say things like ‘and if you don’t know who Underbelly is’ and then they’d go into “[Don’t Fear The] Reaper.” I know you try to make each show different from any other, but do you still play all the songs you’re best known for? We play the obvious. I mean people come to a show and they expect certain things and we do it. We’re never not going to play the obvious. For the rest of the show, I write the set list maybe a halfhour before we go on. And we have to mix it up because we do several different kinds of shows. For instance, when we’re coming to your town [A.C.], people would not be coming to the show unless they know who we are and like what we do, so I can feel free to mix into the set list some more obscure songs. But if we’re playing a city festival or a state fair — which we do things like that in the summertime — there are going to be quite a few people who may not know us, or may only know two or three songs, so I keep it to the more obvious stuff.

This summer I noticed you’re doing some gigs with Deep Purple in France. We love Deep Purple. In fact we played with them in Tampa, I’d say it was ’72 or ’73, way back then. In the ’70s, of course, Deep Purple was probably the biggest band in the world. They were huge, playing strictly the biggest kind of gigs. And they still pull them in. That “more cowbell” skit that Saturday Night Live did (first airing April 2000) was a riot. Do you still have people mentioning that? Of course. You mention Blue Öyster Cult and the cowbell has to come up. And I guess that was good for us. We got a kick out of it and thought it was pretty funny. I mean, it wasn’t disparaging in any way to us. [Then SNL cast member] Will Ferrell wrote the sketch and if you go online you can find the original script. But if you watch the sketch there was so much ad-libbing going on, the script was just a framework. [Christopher Walken] threw in a few lines of his own and Will Ferrell and all the other guys just reacted. Like ‘Stick with me, you’re going to be wearing gold-plated diapers.’ ‘What does that mean?’ ‘I don’t know but he’s Bruce Dickinson.’ Yeah, that was listed as number-five on VH-1’s top-100 SNL skits ever.” What is the Columbia Albums Collection I read about on your Facebook page [14 of BÖC’s 20 studio albums were on the Columbia Records label)]? It’s been out a few months. It’s 17 discs and quite a nice package that was very well reviewed. It’s all the Columbia Records albums in a package, all with their own individual sleeves and original artwork, of course miniaturized because they’re CD-sized, and includes a disc of rarities, a disc of radio broadcasts, live shows, a 40-page booklet written by [guitarist/composer] Lenny Kaye and a link to a Web site with a code for more stuff. It’s a pretty definitive package from ’72 to about ’86 or ’87. ■ see more online @

redited as an originator of concert laser-light shows, and appealing to a broad fan base of metal heads, punk rockers, sci-fi buffs and now a sprawling array of age groups, Blue Öyster Cult has infiltrated a huge cross-section of society, and not just in America. Established in 1967 by students of Long Island’s Stony Brook College as Soft White Underbelly, the band morphed into Blue Öyster Cult in 1972 and went on to sell more than 24 million albums worldwide. The band toured intensely throughout the 1970s and ’80s and has performed more than 4,000 live shows worldwide. Lately, and by design, BÖC’s annual tour dates number much fewer than the 200-plus gigs it routinely did during its heyday. Appearing Saturday night, March 16, at Resort’s Superstar Theater (9pm), BÖC produced 20 studio albums including its fourth called Agents of Fortune that went platinum in 1976, and featured the band’s biggest hit single “[Don’t Fear] The Reaper.” Other songs that received, and still receive, major airplay include “Astronomy” from their third album Secret Treaties in 1974, “Godzilla” from their fifth album Spectres in 1977, and “Burnin’ for You” from their eighth album Fire of Unknown Origin in 1981. Secret, Spectres and Fire all went gold. Eric Bloom, lead vocalist/keyboardist/ rhythm guitarist for BÖC since the beginning, recently spoke with Atlantic City Weekly by phone. Bloom and sensational lead guitarist Buck Dharma, BÖC’s other original member, will be joined onstage by guitarist/keyboardist Richie Castellano, bassist Kasim Sulton and drummer Jules Radino.

our mindset regarding Oz the Great and Powerful is most likely shaped by your reaction to The Wizard of Oz, the film classic that was a staple on television for decades. Either you loved the original and were interested in exploring the wizard’s back-story, or you loved the original and were suspicious of any attempt to reboot a classic. Or perhaps you are a parent desperately seeking acceptable family entertainment in a barren movie landscape. My expectations were less than enthusiastic so my reaction was a surprise — I liked it a lot more than I anticipated, even if James Franco in the title role seems more like a stoner than a clever conman. Directed by Sam Raimi, Oz the Great and Powerful offers the same framing device as the original. The story starts in Kansas in black and white and the images come to vibrant, colorful life when it shifts to Oz. Oscar Diggs (Franco) is a small-time circus magician who seduces innocent farm girls with a line about his continued devotion to them, a line he seals with a music box. He’s a shallow, self-centered jerk and when a twister swoops down and takes Oscar and his hot-air balloon up, up and away to Oz, he figures he has hit the jackpot. He is found by the witch Theodora (Mila Kunis), who tells him the land of Oz has been expecting a great wizard to come and save them and become king. It’s a pretty sweet gig and Oscar figures he can pull off yet another con. However, it turns out that this land is really suffering from a serious case of sibling rivalry. Theodora’s bitter sister, the wicked witch Evanora (Rachel Weisz) wants total control and in this version of Oz her

She hates her good witch sister Glinda (Michelle Williams), and when Oscar realizes he is caught in the middle he has to choose sides — and make good use of his magic tricks in order to restore peace to the kingdom. That’s the moment when the movie caught my attention and delivered unexpected pleasures, watching Oscar take responsibility for his actions, joining forces with the good people of Oz — the Munchkins, the tinkers (including terrific Bill Cobbs as the master tinker with serious building skills), the farmers, and seamstresses — and coming up with the ultimate con to take down a couple of powerful witches. Oz the Great and Powerful ultimately blends together impressive special effects, a story about teamwork and the redemption of a man who finally strives for greatness into an effective family film. And although Franco is more convincing as a shallow conman than as the hero he becomes, it’s the ladies that rule Oz. Kunis and especially Weisz are delightfully convincing as evil witches with a capital “B,” and their antics provide the crackling energy in Oz. Oz the Great and Powerful might not be a classic film likely to endure for more that 70 years, but it works in 2013 quite nicely. n
