Super Bowl Suds, Grub and Specials

Even though legalized sports betting has a few major hurdles to pass before it ever gets ratified in Atlantic City, there are always plenty of spots in the casinos (and region) to catch the big game. While the Borgata’s offering Super Bowl speciality cocktails all week through Sunday at its Long Bar, B Bar and Gypsy Bar — including the Manning Special for Giants fans and the Brady Bomb (pictured) for Patriots fans, among other creative concoctions (see recipes online at acweekly. com) — other casino restaurants, bars and lounges will be catering to Super Bowl viewers too. As an example, the new Harry’s at bally’s, with its nine big-screen TVs at the bar, will be adding two more in its dining room, as well as a large projector screen for the game. There will also be drinks and apps specials. Caesars’ Toga bar and bally’s popular Mountain bar will also offer Super Bowl drink and grub specials. Additionally, look through the pages of this issue for more area Super Bowl Sunday party specials. While your own living room or neighborhood bar may be a nice comfy spot to watch the Giants lose to the Patriots (sorry, Giants fans), there’s a little extra excitement watching the big game at a casino. Even without legalized sports betting yet. — JS

When fundraising functions exceed all expectations from year to year, even in a down economy, it’s a sure sign an organization has been effective in spreading the word about the importance of assisting others in times of need. That’s certainly the case with Jewish Family Service of Atlantic & Cape May Counties (JFS), which will be hosting a glamorous cocktail party called “Diamonds for a Cause” for the fifth year Thursday, feb. 9, at Caesars’ luxurious Diamond Lounge. “Last year we raised the bar with an exclusive venue, delectable cuisine and lavish prizes, [and] this year’s cocktail party should exceed all expectations thanks to our amazing partnerships with both Caesars entertainment and Tiffany & Co,” says andrea Steinberg, executive director of JFS, an organization that provides varied services for over 3,000 people annually. The party takes place 6-8pm and all proceeds benefit JfS’s children and family services. Tickets are $100 per person, and in addition to a surprise signature drink, compliments of Zyr vodka, the event will feature a craft beer tasting with several of the finest American and imported brews. Diamond raffle entries can be purchased for $100 each, or two for $150, and the grand-prize winner will receive a stunning pair of Tiffany & Co. round brilliant diamond circlet studs in a platinum setting, and a private “breakfast at Tiffany” with guests of their choosing. Additional prize drawings will include a Las Vegas getaway, an atlantic City dine-around (dinner for two at Mia, Scarduzio’s, Dos Caminos, Luke Palladino and The reserve at bally’s), and a day at the spa VIP weekend at Harrah’s compliments of Caesars Entertainment. You need not be present to win. The Margate-based JfS is a non-profit, multi-service agency that provides a wide variety of services to children, families and seniors. Each year its “Diamonds for a Cause” event brings more than 200 of the area’s most influential community leaders together for a good cause. Call 822-1108 or visit jfsatlantic.org for more. — Ray Schweibert

Leonard Cohen has been a poet, a ladies man, a devoted monk, a novelist, a Canadian and European superstar, and all of that, including his life devoted to the craft of songwriting, inspires his first new studio album in eight years. Like Bob Dylan’s 1997 Grammy Album of the Year Time Out of Mind, Cohen’s new Old Ideas deals with getting old (Cohen’s now 77), the struggle of existence, love, lust and, of course, spirituality —all with a sly sense of humor, which bobs and weaves throughout the 10 masterful new songs. Unlike Cohen’s great but too synthy Dear Heather (2004) and Ten New Songs (2001), Old Ideas features more live and acoustic instruments, including banjo, violin, piano, and Cohen’s unique flamenco style guitar. All the “old ideas” here are majestic ones. — Jeff Schwachter

riends since their college days in the mid-1970s, ed Vezinho and Jim Ward hatched the idea for a monthly big-band night in somers Point based on the success of a similar concept in their hometown of syracuse, n.Y. “Jimmy got the idea from a band that does one Wednesday a month in syracuse, where we’re from, and we thought we’d try to make it happen here,” says Vezinho, a woodwind specialist and co-leader with trumpeter Ward of the 16-piece ed Vezinho/ Jim Ward Big Band. nick regine, president of the somers Point Jazz society (sPJs), recommended as a venue sandi Pointe coastal Bistro, where the sPJs has hosted several events since owners dan and sandi Anderson took over what was Mac’s restaurant in 2009. Big Band Monday began in August 2010, often packing sandi Pointe’s spacious banquet room from 7-10pm on the first Monday of each month. “We haven’t had a disappointing month yet, and dan and sandi have been fantastic,” says Vezinho. “they’ve gone above and beyond anything we could ask them to do, and the audience has been terrific. it’s been a lot of fun. We couldn’t do it without the support of the community and without the help of dan and sandi. they’ve really championed the cause of jazz music in the somers Point community.” the sPJs co-sponsors the event and bankrolls the cost of a special guest joining the big band each month, supplemented by a $5 per-person cover at the door. this Monday, Feb. 6, the special guest will be trumpeter Matt gallagher doing a tribute to the late Maynard Ferguson. “that should be a lot of fun,” says Vezinho. “Matt’s a real great trumpet player, and we have some pretty decent trumpet players ourselves [four]. i told Matt it’s going to be like a trumpet orgy.” the true litmus test of Big Band Monday was when it coincided with inclement weather, but the difference in attendance when that occurred was negligible. “We had a couple of bad weather months where the numbers were down a little bit, but i don’t think we’ve done a Monday night where there’s been less than 125 people in that room,” says dan Anderson. “We look forward to it each month. i mean, i really get excited when i know the big band’s coming.

i would challenge anyone, anywhere to give me a better five-dollar value.” Vezinho and Michael Pedicin (tenor saxophonist and the special guest March 5) both teach music at rowan and stockton colleges, respectively, and several of their students have been attending Big Band Mondays to make for a nice mix of age groups. “When we started this i thought ‘let’s give it a shot and see how it rolls,’” says Anderson. “We’ll give it a couple of months and see if it takes off. Well, the first two months we did it — August and september [2010] — we packed the house, and we kept it going every Monday after that. every month we filled the room. it’s incredible. to be honest with you i thought the novelty of it would die down and wear off, and the count would drop little by little, but it’s been just the opposite.” Vezinho says the best-attended Big Band Monday thus far was a tribute to baritone saxophone player stan Weiss, who performed for years with Vezinho/Ward Big Band before passing away in January 2011. Jazz vocalist Joanna Pascale also drew a huge crowd last summer, and returns for another Big Band engagement on Monday, May 7. “We’re really looking forward to having her return,” says Vezinho. “it’s been a great run so far,” says sPJs artistic director and acoustic bassist tim lekan, who recently kicked off his third annual tuesday night Jazz series at sandi Pointe (every tuesday, 8-10:30pm, through May). “sometimes it’s a lot of work but it’s very gratifying to see how things have evolved here. there’s a lot of people who are very, very appreciative of what’s taking place, and you get a true sense of how music really impacts people’s lives in a positive way.” n

gomes was wearing right off her wrist without her knowledge. wallach didn’t know it, but he was auditioning for Dennis gomes, who was so impressed he literally hired him on the spot. ten days later, wallach made his debut in Capriccio. since then, he’s spent every weekend working dinner service and sunday brunch in Capriccio and occasionally wandering into gallagher’s, the steak house down the hall. wallach came by his magic career in a time-honored fashion. as a kid, he got a parttime job in a magic store when he was just 12, and began working neighborhood shows and parties for kids a few years younger. he even wrangled an appearance on the old Bozo The Clown tV show. he continued to study magic and mind reading and dabbled in it on a part-time basis after graduating Penn state. Between his occasional gigs, he had day jobs ranging from working in the mailroom at the Philadelphia Inquirer to selling encyclopedias to owning his own window cleaning business. he found himself temporarily out of work when there was a strike at the Inquirer. when the strike was settled, he had landed a premium booking for his magic show, which he would have had to cancel in order to return to his job at the paper. if he didn’t cancel the gig, he’d lose his job at the Inquirer. “it was a big roll of the dice for me, but i went with the [magic] show,” wallach recalls. “i did the show, and just kept on going.” he worked on a luxury yacht in Florida for a time — where he once made a 40-carat diamond disappear (and, fortunately for him, reappear) — and then landed a series of industrial gigs for companies like sony, McDonald’s, Delta airlines and Club Med. he even worked a few high-roller parties for atlantic City casinos and dreamed of landing a more permanent gig there. “i once breeched the security of every casino in atlantic City trying to get to meet the entertainment directors,” he says proudly. wallach isn’t sure where the restaurant gig at resorts will take him. there’s already talk of creating a more permanent show for him in the casino, but he doesn’t want to give up the personal touch of working one-on-one with the restaurant guests. “i know how to do it, and i’m very good at it,” he said. “i rarely get rejected. i’ve done it thousands of times. if i occasionally do have a problem, chances are alcohol is involved. But i know how to handle [drunks], too.” n

ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY • FEBRUARY 2 - 8, 2012

here are two things you need to bring if you’re planning on catching magician and mentalist Steve Wallach’s act in atlantic City. the first is an open mind, a willingness to suspend belief and logic. the second is an appetite for fine italian food. you won’t find wallach in resorts Casino hotel’s 1,400-seat superstar theater. nor will you find him 13 stories above the Boardwalk in the more intimate, 350-seat screening room. Don’t bother looking for him in a lounge, either. if you want to see wallach, you’ll need to make weekend dinner reservations in Capriccio, the gourmet italian restaurant that’s anchored the dining level at resorts since atlantic City’s first casino opened in May 1978. wallach is a strolling entertainer wandering from table to table, introducing himself to complete strangers and deftly weaving his magic, illusion and mind-reading skills for unsuspecting guests. “there’s a delicacy to performing for people who are waiting for their dinner, but once i can get that first effect in, i can usually win them over,” says wallach, who’s performed professionally throughout the united states and France for 27 of his 51 years. wallach’s skills are, quite simply, nothing short of confounding. he’s an absolute master of slight of hand, doing card tricks that defy any logical explanation. he turns $20 bills into $100s and keeps the secret service at bay by turning them back to the double-sawbuck. he asks guests to jot down their thoughts on a small piece of paper, tears up the paper without looking at it and then accurately guesses what was written. and when you ask him, out of complete bewilderment, how he does it, he answers with the quip and timing of a great comedian. “Can you keep a secret?” he asks, usually getting an affirmative nod from his subject? “well, so can i.” how wallach landed his current gig at resorts is almost as magical as the tricks he performs. he was at a Philadelphia restaurant on a saturday night in mid-December waiting to perform at a private party. the party was running late, so wallach was waiting in the main dining room when he overheard someone at a nearby table mentioning playing card suits. they were playing his song. out of curiosity, he sauntered over to the table of strangers, who turned out to be resorts president and Ceo Dennis Gomes, his wife, Barbara, and some friends. wallach couldn’t help himself. having no idea he was talking to the co-owner of an atlantic City casino, he launched into his usual tableside spiel and began doing his card tricks and mind reading. then, just for some extra giggles, he lifted the watch Barbara

t’s been a good run for the borgata Winter open, which has pumped some much-needed life into a bleak January in atlantic City. the first event of the open drew 1,873, a record for a borgata tournament. the open’s big event, its $3,300 + $200 Championship event, has come in at 733 players and a total buy-in of $2,422,000. the tournament carries a $2 million prize-pool guarantee and even after the dealer’s vig of three percent and two $5,000 bonuses for early chip leaders, that guarantee has been easily met. that’s actually a little better than last year’s championship event, which drew 718 players. of course with that high a buyin, it’s amazing that the casino can draw that many players at all. the field will play down to a final table on friday, feb. 3, and then a winner. the top prize is $542,771. as for big-name pros, the casino has drawn most of the east Coast regulars that call the borgata their home base. Players like steve dannenman, John racener and Josh brikis, to name only a few. one guy having a great Winter open is Will “the thrill” fialla, who has been playing steadily in most events. he’s already won the opening event and $165,000 and has been cashing on several more. he could end up winning the borgata’s leader-board promotion, which tracks players’ action throughout the tournament. the winner gets a seat at the borgata spring open Championship in april. With about $3 million in lifetime cashes, however, fialla hardly needs it, but a win is a win. the point is that the borgata’s events, with the slight exception of the borgata open in september, which is part of the World Poker tour, continues to be a regional force. Looking at the players lists for the tournaments, the vast majority are from new Jersey, Pennsylvania and new York with a healthy representation of players from east Coast states from Massachusetts to Maryland. and you have to expect that. With the constant spread of casino gambling, it’s hard to imagine a January event drawing players from around the country. for example, the WsoP circuit events had a competing event at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas this month. It should be noted that the borgata Winter open outdrew that Like us:

facebook.com/ACWeekly

tournament by a lot, but clearly there’s a lot of choices for players. and don’t forget that the superstars of poker are in australia for the aussie Millions. so for a fairly rich regional east Coast event, the Winter open is doing just fine. In some other news, the golden nugget poker room is up and running and has settled into a schedule of four daily tournaments. the casino has an elegant 20-table room, which while small, does round out the poker experience in the marina district, with all three marina casinos now offering poker. the nugget offers a very early (or late depending on your point of view) tournament at 4am, so it’ll be interesting to see if that draws. tournaments are also offered at 10am, 4pm and 10pm. all are $68 + $12 buy-ins, which puts them in a nice midrange of action more affordable than both harrah’s and borgata. We also have a hit to report: the Caesars entertainment Combined bad-beat jackpot. the hit came on Jan. 19 and was good for $307,482. In this case, quad fours was tripped up by quad eights. the hand loser (or bad-beat winner) received $93,313 while the winner of the hand received $62,565. the jackpot also paid $1,068 to 142 players in the four Caesars rooms. this was the 20th time the combined jackpot has hit since it was introduced in august 2010. that shakes out to a hit every month and a half or so. When the combined jackpot was first introduced, there was some hope — especially with its high initial minimum hand of quad queens — that it would lead to some record jackpots. but that hasn’t really worked out as the jackpot just keeps hitting. and finally, it was interesting to hear that baccarat is now one of the most dominant table games in Las Vegas, even out-drawing blackjack. In atlantic City, the game makes much less. the reason is that baccarat has always been a whale’s game and draws big money, especially from asian players as of late. atlantic City has never drawn high rollers the way Vegas can. sad, but it also means there is room for growth. n

ometimes in life, a long and circuitous route proves to ultimately be the best course. such is the case for restaurateurs Kevin du and wife tracy Chan of somers Point’s Bay avenue sushi. together for 20-plus years, the couple emigrated from southern China — specifically guangdong for du and tiny resort island macau for Chan — landing in of all places, minnesota in 1990. in case you are wondering, an uncle of du’s was already situated there, operating a Chinese restaurant. after six years the pair moved east, to the new York City borough of Queens. simultaneously, du’s culinary odyssey continued. apprenticing for respected manhattan sushi purveyors, he was now firmly entrenched on a career path as a Japanese chef. a year later they were afforded an opportunity to establish an eatery in another cold climate, south Burlington, Vermont, on the shores of lake Champlain. after working there for “a few years,” Chan explains that they returned to new York until 2005. it was the arrival of somers Point’s shop-Rite which spurred the couple to once again relocate. Contracted to manage the facility’s sushi bar, they arrived locally in ’06. during that time, du and Chan developed close, almost familial relations with many customers. she repeatedly refers to them in hushed, grateful tones, allowing that: “a lot of our old customers are returning and telling their friends.” While important for any business, this

is particularly crucial to an ethnic restaurant opened in the off-season of a resort area. since launching just three months ago, they appear to have successfully built a steady trade. this became obvious on the late afternoon we met with Chan, when our interview was repeatedly interrupted by a series of walk-ins continuing to stream through the doors, well past normal lunch hours. nice problem to have. the tidy space — converted from a taco shop — is blessed with soothing dark blue and silver tones. a white tile floor sparkles so bright that it virtually acts as a mirror. the couple spent several years searching out a location for their own venture,

and have indeed created a serene dining space. if you’re a real food fan, ask to sit in the left rear section. Here you’ll be afforded a peek at the kitchen staff, through a screened service portal, as they prepare your meal. With nicely spaced tables for 30 and a lovely six-seat sushi bar, the immaculate room provides intimate, romantic little spots for dining and decompression. asked about her husband’s best creations, tracy mentions the chef’s special roll, spicy crab topped with spicy tuna and the house special roll, oven baked lobster tail, mozzarella cheese, panko with a mayo-based sauce. We also liked the sound of an almond tempura roll, smoked salmon with tama-

go (a Japanese omelet enhanced with soy, sugar and sometimes mirin, sweet sake) plus avocado caviars. What looked just as appealing were a pair of blackboard specials on this day. specifically, the fantasy roll, salmon, tuna, white fish, avocado and cucumber inside a white sea weed nori. or a tuna sasa appetizer, fish blended with jalapeno and tomato, served in a cucumber cup. Chan says that the overall cuisine has been tweaked somewhat to accommodate the dining tastes of the american public, just as happened with italian-american fare in decades prior. “Very traditional Japanese style is not completely accepted by many americans,” she says. Which doesn’t prevent them from venturing out towards fishmongering’s fringes. Recent evening specials have included species not yet common on local menus. like aji, a prized Japanese jack mackerel that often sells at prices approaching that of sushi-grade tuna. or imported Japanese red snapper, costing double that of its atlantic ocean cousins. But the new restaurant’s stock-in-trade are its Kitchen entrees, platters served with miso soup, green salad and rice. the 10 proteins from which to choose stretch from the standards, various teriyakis and tempuras, to the unusual, eel don, barbequed strips over a bed of rice. for a couple who have traveled halfway around the world to ply their trade, that only seems to make sense. n

An American classic returns to Atlantic City following another No. 1 album

and she creates a new day. With each day she does something different. She’s really very talented.” Bennett picked all of the songs for Duets II, and his son Danny chose the artists. “A lot of [the artists] I never knew about because I like listening to classical music and jazz. So the contemporary stuff doesn’t move me so much. But I was very impressed when I finally met the group that he chose for me. They were all, [even] more so than on the first Duets album ... very prepared and they knew everything that they had to do.” All American songbook classics, the songs on Duets II do not sound contrived or overrehearsed. Rather, on a song like “One for My Baby (And One More For The Road),” Bennett and John Mayer joke around like old chums with some sweet improvisation going on between the two artists. On his duet with Willie Nelson, “The Sunny Side of the Street,” the pair breathes a whole new life into the timeless song. For the Johnny Green tune “Body & Soul,” Bennett sang with the late Amy Winehouse. He later called her one of the most focused and professional artists that he’s ever collaborated with. (His favorite collaborator of all time? When pressed he names New Jersey’s own Count Basie.) “[Winehouse] was a great jazz singer,” says Bennett. “You know it’s not easy to sing jazz. It’s not like someone can wake up one morning and say, ‘Well I’m gonna be

a singer, but I’m gonna sing jazz.’ You’ve either got that gift or you don’t have it. It’s not something you could learn; it’s something that you’re just blessed with. That feeling of syncopating, you know, turning phrases and soul, and concept, and certain tempos that are just right. It’s a thing if you know how to do it you can do it just like on my [duet with Mayer]. He’s a great blues singer, you know, people don’t realize how really good he is, he’s got a great range and he can sing in his normal key but then go way down into bass notes and everything, he’s got a great range, a vocal range. He knows how to sing the blues.” Danny Bennett supervised the filming of all of the stunning recording sessions for Duets II; some of which can be seen online as individual videos. The sessions were done in studios all over the world, with a crack band backing Bennett and his partners in song. Bennett recorded his duet with Winehouse in London at Abbey Road Studios. He recalls meeting Winehouse’s boyfriend and father while he was performing in London. “They came with me,” he says. “I was doing two evenings at Royal Albert Hall and one for a lot of young people in Britain in this swinging club that all the young people go to in London. They were there every night, and ... she told me many years later, after she received her first Grammy — I was the first one that announced her when she won the award — and she said

publicly, you know, on interviews, she said, ‘It wasn’t that I won the Grammy, but it was that Tony Bennett announced it.’ She was a big fan, you know, and so we got along well. But I was really trying to tell her to slow down with the drugs. I told her, ‘It’s gonna kill you if you don’t stop.’ But I didn’t really get the chance to really tell her and sit down with her and explain why. “She was completely sober when we did the two days with her on the album,” adds Bennett. “It wasn’t the drugs as much as the liquor that killed her. She just overdid it. She didn’t have to, you know, she’s a natural great jazz singer. She was as good as Ella Fitzgerald or Billie Holiday or Dinah Washington. She was as good as any of them. And very huge in Europe, by the way. Much bigger in Europe than the United States.” Bennett’s been “very huge” around the world for more than seven decades and even with his latest album’s success, he isn’t thinking about taking a rest. He paints every day, and is already embarking on another Duets album, this time with Latin music performers. “I’m doing another one, but it’s the last one I’m doing, and that’s for the whole international Spanish community. Whether it’s Spain, whether it’s South America, whether it’s Mexico, for every Latin person, [any] person that speaks Spanish. I’m singing with all the greatest singers in those countries, and so they’ll be doing the songs that I made famous throughout the years, and interpret them in the Spanish language. I’ll be singing in English and they’ll be singing in [Spanish].” Bennett says the album should be completed in 2012. “I think it’s gonna be done this year sometime, but I don’t know when it will be released. It will be the next album I believe I will be doing.” The iconic singer who also has a new 73-CD box set out, his first-ever “complete career-spanning deluxe box set,” chronicling his amazingly successful career through the decades, is looking forward to returning to Atlantic City for his show at Caesars on Saturday, Feb. 4. It’s a town he’s been performing in since the 1950s. “Every time I’ve ever played there we’ve been sold out,” he says. “In fact, the whole Philadelphia area has been beautiful to me right through the years. They’ve always accepted me and we’ve had a great time performing for them.” n

ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY • february 2 - 8, 2012

isten to Tony Bennett’s 1959 album Blue Velvet and then listen to his latest CD, last September’s Duets II, and it’s difficult to distinguish between the young Tony (born Anthony Dominick Benedetto on Aug 3, 1926, in New York, N.Y.) and the elder Tony, now 85. Not only is it astonishing that he’s been singing since the 1940s — starting in the military in WWII as his autobiography describes in great detail — but the iconic singer’s voice has remained as cool, refined and downright elegant over all those wonderful years. And they have been wonderful if you ask him. “I am very fortunate, you know,” Bennett says during a recent phone interview from his New York home with Atlantic City Weekly. “I’m really blessed with a lot of luck, you know, and [I’m] in top health and I really I love it because I made a commitment to myself to never retire, because I have a lot to learn yet. I’m 85 and I’m studying sculpturing now for the first time, studying music. So I’m still doing a lot of studying.” Bennett still does a lot of recording and performing as well. “And I like it, I like my life,” he says. “I love being alive and the gift of being alive. It’s a great gift and everybody should feel that way.” Last August Bennett spent his 85th birthday week in a New York City studio with Lady Gaga, where the odd couple hit it off and recorded a steaming version of “The Lady Is a Tramp.” Lady Gaga, as well as 16 other artists — from John Mayer, Michael Bublé, Norah Jones, Aretha Franklin, Willie Nelson, Carrie Underwood, Mariah Carey and k.d. lang to Josh Groban, Natalie Cole, Sheryl Crow, Andrea Bocelli, Faith Hill, Alejandro Sanz and the late Amy Winehouse — sang a song with Bennett for the album, which went to No. 1 on the Billboard charts. (His first Duets album, a little tamer, reached No. 3 on the Billboard charts when it was released in 2006.) “My gosh, to be 85 and go number one on Billboard,” Bennett says, “I told everybody, I said, ‘it’s never going to happen again I don’t think.’” Bennett says that working with Gaga was a treat. “She’s fabulous. She’s one of the best performers I’ve ever met. And so intelligent, so creative. A very talented singer, and a terrific piano [player], and she dances great

We cover things like ‘tips from a Pro’ on maintaining both gas and diesel engines, ‘don’t Be Fuelish’ about prepping your boat for economy and performance, basic fiberglass repair and maintenance, how to protect your boat from the elements, things like that. Atlantic City Boat Show

Expanded to include all types of watercraft and a myriad of accessories and activities, the 33rd annual indoor boat show is stressing education. By Ray Schweibert

ith leisure-time dollars under stress, making sure major purchases are the right ones for your budget is crucial in this economy. that’s become the mantra of this winter’s annual indoor boat show, underway for the 33rd year at the atlantic City Convention Center now through sunday, Feb. 5. “the economy affected the boating industry, but we’ve been seeing some recovery,” says show manager Jon Pritko. “this year we’re really focused on education. We believe that an educated boater is someone who’s going to find it more enjoyable and stay in the boating industry for a long time. “Buying a boat can be a big undertaking, especially if you’re a first-time owner who doesn’t really know a whole lot about what to do once you’re out there. it’s not like driving a car off the lot and into your garage — there’s a lot of things to consider when you’re buying a boat, and that’s a huge part of what this show is all about.” in years past the show was limited to powerboats, but this year’s will include sailboats, kayaks and all facets of the growing paddle-sport industry. there will be seminars from experts in the boating and fishing worlds, and a special section called Welcome to the Water designed to educate the novice boater. “We call it Boating 101,” says Pritko. “it’s a bunch of entry-level subjects like the rules of the water, what role the marine police play, how to purchase the right boat for what you want to use it for. it’s a Q&a where people can go to get answers. it’s really cool because we have
