‘The Way We Were’ Exhibit Ventnor Coffee’s Music at Arts Garage By Jeff Schwachter Showdown By Ray Schweibert
F
ebruary is a busy month for Ralph Hunter, one of the foremost historians on Atlantic City’s — and the country’s — African-American history. Getting up at 3am to drive to a school in Delaware to speak to children there for a Black History Month presentation, or going all around the state with his traveling exhibits that tell the story of African-American history in the resort and how important blacks were in developing Atlantic City as well as figuring out how to sustain themselves in their own neighborhood, with its own shops, clubs, markets, professionals, entrepreneurs, barbers, fire and police, and economy. “The Way We Were” is Hunter’s new exhibit (sponsored by Comcast/NBC Universal) at the Atlantic City annex of the African-American Heritage Museum, located at the Noyes Arts Garage of Stockton College on Mississippi Avenue. As well as setting up an extraordinary exhibit featuring a number of artifacts (an old A.C. Electric sign featuring a character in black face, the fire helmet of the first black firefighter in the city, a bass fiddle that belonged to the city’s Phillip J. Epps Jr., a well-known black doctor’s house-call kit, the doors and famous neon sign of the Club Harlem), photos (entertainers such as Chris Columbo, entrepreneurs such as Sarah Spencer Washington, the city’s black churches and rooming houses) and other ephemera, Hunter, the museum’s president and founder, spent a lot of time setting up the large space to tell a story: the story of Atlantic City, the story of African-Americans in Atlantic City and the city’s Northside and the A.C. icons from the 1930s and 1940s who Hunter hopes will not only never be forgotten, but will inspire visitors to the exhibit ($3 adults / $2 students and seniors; free Wednesdays and for military).

uriya S.A. Raheem was born and raised in the Northside of Atlantic City, the inspiration for her book, Growing Up in the Other Atlantic City: Wash’s and the Northside. This important history of the Atlantic City enclave expresses the migration, motives, achievements, contributions and impacts that black families made on Atlantic City prior to the dawn of the casino era. Raheem’s reconstruction of the Northside history will take the stage at Stockton’s Experimental Theatre (Feb. 12-16) in honor of Black History Month. Pamela Hendrick, theatre professor, and Stockton’s theatre students, in collaboration with Raheem, have fashioned a different method of exposure to publicize this vital, edifying history of Atlantic City: visual arts. Hendrick explains, “I am very interested in bringing personal accounts of history to the stage. I am especially interested in sharing histories that are in danger of being lost. Turiya Raheem’s story of life in Atlantic City’s African American community from the 1920s-’70s paints a picture of a vibrant, high-functioning, close-knit community — a community that supported and shared in the success of Atlantic City as a thriving resort.” Hendrick and Raheem have been working very closely on this project since its birth to produce and convey the story of one Atlantic City family that fought against the odds to succeed. “It is absolutely amazing to see my written words coming to life on stage,” says Raheem. “After all, this is not only my story, but my family and community’s, as well. It’s all very close to my heart and Pam has kept much of the dialogue from the book.” Visit stockton.edu/pac for show times and prices.

hen Christine and Michael Einwechter overhauled every inch of what had been an auto-glass store, unveiling Ventnor Coffee (ventnorcoffee.com) on North Dorset Avenue in August 2013, their intention of course was to provide the downbeach community with select coffees, teas, lattes, homemade muffins, biscottis and pastries in a relaxed and inviting atmosphere. What they also had in mind was fostering an interest in the local arts, and offering poets, painters, singers and songwriters a venue in which to express themselves artistically. The couple has done a ton of special events in their first few months in business, and regularly host free live-music events on weekends like Teen Karaoke Friday and Open Mike Saturday. “The idea behind [teen karaoke] was to give local middle- and high-school kids something to do, some place to go other than hanging out where they might get into trouble, and to become musically inspired.” says Michael Einwechter, “because in the winter at the shore, there’s really not a whole lot for kids to do. And we have bands coming from all over [for open-mike Saturday]. Other musicians have been spreading the word about how nice a place this is to play their music in.” Ventnor Coffee’s most ambitious undertaking to date will run from Feb. 22 through April 12. The Ventnor Coffee Music Showdown, presented by 100.7 FM WZXL, is a competition open to all bands and musicians in genres that include rock, folk, reggae, hip-hop, country, jazz, blues and others. The winning three bands/musicians, as determined by a panel of judges, will have the chance to win cash prizes ($500 to the winner), eight hours of recording time at Nashville North Studios of Linwood, and headline gigs at the famed Stone Pony of Asbury Park and Margaritaville in A.C. There is no fee to sign up or participate, but there are cutoff dates for entries. Visit ventnorcoffee.com/musiccompetition-2014 for all the details. Margaritaville will be the host of the Ventnor Coffee Music Showdown Awards show on April 12, starting at 1pm — and they will be offering three of the best acts a gig at the resort, according to Einwechter. Recently, after designating a space and constructing a seven-by-12-foot stage for live performances, Ventnor Coffee came under the scrutiny of the building department of the city’s zoning board. A meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 19 (6:30pm), at Ventnor City Hall to determine if the shop can operate as-is or be forced to seek a “change of use” variance from the city. “We’ve had music since we started [about six months ago] and only built this beautiful stage to make musicians feel more comfortable,” says Einwechter, who is also director of the Ventnor Tourism Board that promotes all the beach town has to offer year-round. “Music is only part of our business. It’s an accessory. We don’t charge for tickets, we don’t charge community organizations to have their events here, people come in and want to just sit and read and we don’t charge for that. So basically all we’re going for is interpretation of the definition of a coffee shop.” Ventnor Coffee can appeal any denial by the city if its interpretation is that live music is inappropriate for that zone, but Einwechter hopes it does not come to that. He has had several local musicians rally behind him for support, and a few days prior to the zoning-board hearing (Sunday, Feb. 16) many artists/musicians will perform at the shop throughout the day starting 9am. Among them is singer/ songwriter (and AC Weekly editor) Jeff Schwachter (noon2pm), Bob Sterling (2-4pm), the Bubba Mac Blues Band (4-6pm), and others. see more online @

Sociable Vagabond
The recently revamped neighborhood haunt not only sports a killer craft beer and comfort food menu, but also entertainment most nights of the week. By Ray Schweibert • feedback@acweekly.com
O
ld friends will reminisce of neighborhood taverns that had a folksy downhome feel, while young friends might wonder what their ultimate local niche would be like if they had the resources and wherewithal to create one. Somewhere in between, Tom Harris and Elvis Cadavid, friends, lifelong Ventnor Heights residents and seasoned veterans of the hospitality industry, designed the kind of place that would likely satisfy both sides in the Vagabond Kitchen & Tap House. Shortly after Sandy ravaged it, Harris and Cadavid bought Vagabond from the prior owners, whom they also worked for, and revitalized it in every way imaginable. From pristine landscaping and expanded outdoor seating, to an aired-out interior affording a better view of Lakes Bay across West End Avenue, Vagabond has the clean and comfortable setting everyone wishes they could maintain in their own abode (but seldom ever do).
Another linchpin to Vagabond’s prior and current success is its extensive craft beer selection. Current ownership expanded what was already one of the area’s best beer lineups, now offering up to 14 taps including some that remain a constant (Yards Brawler and Philly Pale Ale, Breckenridge Vanilla Porter, Stone Arrogant Bastard, Cape May Honey Porter and IPA, Allagash Black and White) and others on a revolving “on deck” circle like, recently, Smutty Nose Pure Bliss and Short Batch #25, and two coffee stouts — Flying Dog Kujo and Terrapin Wak-NBak — that will kick your ass if you’re not careful (8.9 and 9.4 abv, respectively). Entertainment-wise, Vagabond does Quizzo every Tuesday (8-11pm) and will be awarding $500 in prizes to the topthree teams at the end of February. Every Wednesday it’s karaoke with veteran host Frank “Frankie Showboat” Formica from 9pm-1am.
“That’s been really successful so far,” says Harris. “We’ll put the song lyrics on the screen [a huge flat-screen TV in the bar] and a lot of people love it and have a lot of fun with it.” There is live music every Friday night, lately featuring talented singer/acoustic guitarist Mike Crosson and also having recently featured artists like the Dan Burke Trio and the youth group Either Way. Every Saturday night DJ Hype turns the venue into a nightclub of sorts following the peak dining hours. “On March 5 we’re doing a special event with Paul Castro [a resident DJ at MIXX nightclub who sometimes partners with DJ Hype at Borgata] and we expect a huge crowd for that,” says Harris. “Two days later [Friday, March 7] Dr. Mazz [Anthony Masciarelli, a Cape Regional physician who, when not practicing medicine, performs in the duet ‘Michaels and Mazz’ with singer Debra Michaels] is coming back. His first performance here was our biggest night ever. It was like he brought in the entire hospital with him. The vibe was incredible. We were talking about it for months. “At one point Dr. Mazz [see drmazz.com] got the entire bar dancing [to an upbeat tune] and then goes into a slow song where suddenly every couple in the place is slow dancing. It was awesome. Everybody had such a good time.” Other special events on the horizon

Vagabond Tap Room 672 N Trenton Ave., Chelsea Heights, A.C. 350-6721 vagabondac.com
EVENT INFO include “tap takeovers” where breweries run specials on their wares through Vagabond’s taps, and “beer dinners” like a fixed-price, four-course pairing it recently did with Troegs Brewing. Vagabond also established the “9th Period Happy Hour” from 3-6pm daily as a sort of toast to the local teachers in the area, but open to anyone. It includes $5 specials on Skyy vodka drinks and Rex Goliath wines, beer specials, and half-priced appetizers (including such items as tequila shrimp bangers, crab bread, calamari, steamers, mussels and more). “We’ve been in the restaurant business all our lives [Harris worked for nine years at Borgata, and for five years under Vagabond’s former owner, Kyle Williams, at Hard Rock Café] but many of the people we didn’t really know too well in this area we’ve now become really good friends with — locals from Chelsea Heights, Ventnor Heights and nearby. Some are coming in four days a week. We’ve established a really good relationship with a lot of people in the area and are really happy with how things are working out.” Vagabond’s hours are 11am-1am Sunday through Thursday, and until 3am Friday and Saturday. ■ see more online @

You played an Italian song recently along with an English version by maybe Al Martino with the lyrics “You’ll hear our song and feel me near you.” Can you please give me the title? I loved the Italian version. — Karen M., Horsham, Pa.
I can’t believe what an illustrious life you’ve had-and still have! I remember The Monkees episode “Some Like It Lukewarm” — I wrote about it in my Courier-Post column when the re-runs were On Demand and it was great. If I’m not mistaken, weren’t you the only guest star that appeared as himself? Thanks again for a truly sensational read. — Your friend, Frank Halperin, N.J.

The recordings you heard were “Our Concerto” by Al Martino on the 20th Century label, and “Il Nostro Concerto” on the Jamie label by Umberto Bindi. You might remember the English version of another song by Umberto Bindi, “Il Mio Mondo” — it became a No. 1 hit for Cilla Black in 1964 when it was called “You’re My World.”
Absolutely right. The character I played originally was called “Mr. Arnold,” but when I ended up ad libbing so many of my lines and playing an exaggerated version of myself, they decided to bill me as the Geator. Thanks to our expert Geatorette in Maryland, Erin Burns, for remembering the name of the original character. n
You’re absolutely correct. Joey grew up in South Philadelphia and emceed the local Variety Club telethons. At that time he was doing his nightly ABC talk show opposite Johnny Carson, and I was doing my fiveday-a-week show, Jerry’s Place, on ABC’s Channel 6. The telethon’s broadcast was sponsored by Channel 6 ABC and I co-hosted a segment with local artists where Joey was the master of ceremonies.

Apparently Spike’s budget was just too high, and when he couldn’t get financing for it, the James Brown estate reached out to Mick Jagger, who agreed to come on as co-producer. nce again, greetings and salutations. And a tremendous thanks to all who made our 29th show at the Kimmel Center, “Great voices of the ’60s,” another smashing success. Unforgettable performances from Bobby Rydell, Jay Siegel & the Tokens, Pat Upton, Eddie Holman, Gary U.S. Bonds, and Jay Black — and of course Low Cut Connie were absolutely amazing and the perfect opening to the show. These kids represent the next generation that love our music and are destined to stardom. My pal Seymour Stein, who gave Madonna, the Talking Heads, k.d. lang, and the Pretenders their first recording contracts, predicts that these guys are headed for stardom. To all, and to our wonderful audience, a tremendous thanks. And remember the next concert on April 19 will be a doo-wop reunion of the great harmony groups who’ve been with us in the past. Stay tuned for details. By the way, starting with this column, look for “Ask the Geator” to run once a month. And we’ll go back to once a week at the beginning of the summer season. Now, time for your questions.

detail, especially since Tim Mahoney, who played bass guitar right handed, taught himself to play as a lefty in order to more accurately portray McCartney. The Mahoney Brothers, it seemed, were becoming as much actors as they were musicians, especially after Brian and Tim Mahoney passed an audition to become replacements for members of the original Broadway cast of Beatlemania. But the show closed before the brothers could get their break on the Great White Way. Great Adventure didn’t waste any time resigning the band, this time to a five-year gig where they sang for an estimated three million people during their 1979-1984 run. In 1985, the band was asked to reprise their Beatles set as the featured act in a young production show called Legends In Concert, which was beginning to make some noise on the Atlantic City casino showroom circuit. The Mahoney Brothers became the first Beatles tribute band to join the Legends cast and spent six months anchoring the show at Caesars Atlantic City and drawing the best audience response in the show, even surpassing that of the Elvis Presley look- and sound alike who – by Legends law – had to close every show. But the Mahoney Brothers aren’t monodimensional musicians and singers who can mimic the music of one band. They still consider themselves a cover band and have created other shows, including Jukebox Heroes Live! — which features the music of artists like Willie Nelson, The Everly Brothers, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly, Neil Diamond and more. Sure, Paul McCartney performs about eight to 10 Beatles songs in his live show, and his band is so well-versed in Beatles songs that they nail the music and vocals mostly with spot-on accuracy. But P-Mac’s only played Atlantic City once, a 2002 one-night-stand at Boardwalk Hall. And at 12,500 seats, the room may be too small for his big price tag. And yes, when Ringo Starr tours with his All-Starr Band (he’s due to play Caesars on June 21), he sings his few Beatles hits. But it isn’t the same, even though he’s backed by world-class musicians. Since the chances of a reunion of the original Beatles ended on Dec. 8, 1980 — the night Mark David Chapman pumped four bullets into John Lennon — seeing bands like The Mahoney Brothers (or some of the other Beatles tribute acts that occasionally play Atlantic City) is about as close as anyone will get to the real thing. ■

ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY • FEBRUARY 6 - 12, 2014
half-century ago this weekend, four mop-topped kids from the hardscrabble, working-class city of Liverpool, England went on American television for the first time and changed the course of rock ‘n roll. Sunday, Feb. 9, marks the 50th anniversary of The Beatles’ first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. Considering Atlantic City does have a somewhat tenuous history with the band — they appeared at the former Convention Hall (now Boardwalk Hall) in 1964, and two Beatles, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, have performed here as solo artists — it’s something of a surprise that only one casino is marking the occasion by booking a Beatles tribute band this weekend. Call it coincidence by location, but the longrunning New Jersey cover band known as the Mahoney Brothers will present their tribute show Long Live The Beatles Saturday, Feb. 8, in Resorts’ Superstar Theater, which is just steps down the street from what Atlantic City Beatles fans considered hallowed ground in late August 1964. Resorts is just a guitar pick toss from the vacant lot that was once the site of the Lafayette Hotel, where the Fab Four camped out before their Boardwalk gig. It was purely an accident that the Mahoney Brothers even found the niche that has become an anchor of their career as cover artists. In the mid-1970s, brothers Brian and Tim Mahoney, plus a couple of childhood friends, formed a cover band and began working the New Jersey bar and nightclub circuit. One night in 1977, though, a bar owner threw them a challenge. Could the Mahoneys, he asked, devote an entire set to just one artist instead of performing the music of various popular bands and solo singers, which was how they typically performed? The guys grabbed some black turtlenecks to create the look of the Meet the Beatles album cover and gave it their best shot. So what if they hadn’t mastered enough Beatles songs to fill an entire set, so they performed “Ticket To Ride” three times. The audience response to their send-up of the Beatles was so overwhelming that the band began learning more songs, the club booked them back for several more performances that month and the show Long Live the Beatles was born. Less than a year later, the Mahoney Brothers sold out 10,000 seats at Six Flags Great Adventure, which attracted the attention of the producers of the Broadway show Beatlemania. What impressed them most about the Mahoneys was their attention to

Mr. Smith Goes to Stockton
Guitarist G.E. Smith plays rare solo show Feb. 8 at Stockton PAC. The longtime ‘SNL’ bandleader and touring guitarist for Bob Dylan chats about his five decades in music. By Jeff Schwachter • feedback@acweekly.com “I’m just a kid from Pennsylvania and how would I dare do this? But there I was.” Below, Smith talks about his roots and his subsequent musical journey. You were born in Pennsylvania and you started playing pretty young. I got my guitar when I was four. I wouldn’t say I really started playing until I was seven. There was an Irish girl who was probably about 13 or 14 who was in town that summer and she showed me some chords and taught me a few songs. So, that’s when I’d say I really started playing.
G
eorge Edward Smith, known by his stage name G.E. Smith, refers to himself in humble terms. “I’m just a kid from Pennsylvania,” Smith, born in Stroudsburg, Pa., in 1952, tells Atlantic City Weekly during a recent phone call from his home on Long Island. “And I got really lucky.” Surely luck plays a part in nearly every success story in the ultra competitive entertainment business, but Smith’s five decades as a professional musician begs the question: What’s luck got to do with it? Among the guitarist and musical director’s many achievements — which has garnered him enormous respect throughout the industry — are playing guitar with fellow Pennsylvania band Hall & Oates during the pop outfit’s peak years in the late 1970s and early 1980s, serving as one of the most memorable guitarists and musical directors on NBC’s Saturday Night Live, performing in the “house band” at 1985’s Live Aid (in Philly), touring with Bob Dylan for a few years (essentially helping to kick off Dylan’s so-called “Never Ending Tour,” which has yet to end, in 1988), being asked to lead the charge as musical director for The 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration for Bob Dylan staged at Madison Square Garden in 1992 (which is being re-released as an expanded CD and DVD/Blu-Ray March 4 with a slew of bonus features, including interviews with Smith), touring with Roger Waters in recent years for The Wall Live, and having Fender honor him with his own signature Telecaster in 2007. Smith, who performs solo at Stockton College in Galloway on Saturday, Feb. 8, started out supporting himself playing guitar early on, performing in different bands in the Poconos and Connecticut in the 1970s, touring with Dan Hartman in 1977, and then hooking up with Gilda Radner in 1979 in New York for her Gilda Live Broadway show (the two later married) in which he was the guitarist. He’s been in New York ever since (although he just moved out of the city with his family to Long Island).

Was there music in your family? Not at all. I just loved it. When I got that guitar when I was four, I laid it on the ground outside in the backyard in the summer and I would slap the low E string and I would watch it vibrate. Something about that vibration just fascinated me. At some point, it clicked in my brain that the vibration made the noise that made the sound. It was like the whole physical world clicked for me. ... I was like, ‘OK I got it — the edges of buildings and that plane in the sky is actually higher than I am.’ It was a big moment. A girlfriend of your uncle bought you a Martin? She got me a little Mahogany Martin guitar 0017. It’s a guitar that they have made since back in the 1800s. That was great, having a decent guitar at seven. A few years later, my mom helped me get a used Telecaster from the same year I’m born. We didn’t know that at the time. We just knew it was a guitar we could afford. And here we are. I just played a gig the other night using that guitar. Now you have a Fender Telecaster named for you. Would you have ever thought growing up you’d have one of the greatest electric guitars named and modeled after you? That is quite an honor. I never would’ve imagined that. I’ve been so lucky. A lot of my career has been pure luck. You meet somebody and then through them you meet somebody else. That’s the way my career has always gone. It’s always been about chance meetings. How did you meet fellow Pennsylvanians, Daryl Hall and John Oates? I met Daryl and John through the drummer who was then in [a band I had played with] Desmond Child and Rouge, Eddie Zyne. Eddie would play drums with Hall and Oates earlier like in the mid -’70s. He was with Desmond and I did the tour with him and I think he went to visit Daryl and John at a recording session one night and they said we need a guitar player and
that led to six years with them. They were sort of in a little bit of a slump and then they starting cranking out the hits and MTV came along and they were ready. We were making videos and getting ready for it. Tommy Mottola, who was their manager at the time, was very aware of that and knew what MTV was going to mean and what it did mean at that time. It was [an important time in] the music industry. That was probably the biggest thing in your career at that point. People started recognizing you from the videos and shows like you said, which eventually lead to another Philadelphia experience — Live Aid. We had worked constantly from the middle of ’79 until the spring of ’85, but that Live Aid show came up and they said we’ve got to do this. Farm Aid was that summer too and we also did that. The Live Aid show was amazing and it turned out that we were the house band for those who didn’t have their own people to back them up. We backed Mick Jagger and Tina Turner and a few others. Did you know what the performers were going to be playing for the most part? Yeah. We were there a few days ahead of time. We rehearsed and tried to make it sound as good as we all could. It all came together really nice. I was starting to get a reputation as a guy who could put together a band quickly for someone and do that. I still do that kind of stuff and I’ve always enjoyed that. Was Live Aid the first time you fell under that situation? I wouldn’t say it was the first time, but it was the one that would get noticed most. This led to you becoming the musical director and guitarist for the Saturday Night Live house band the same year? Yes. Howard Shore — who was the original music director on Saturday Night Live when they first started — and I had gotten to be very good friends around the time I had gotten to be friends with Gilda and everybody on the show: Dan Aykroyd, Billy Murray, and Lorne [Michaels]. They were Gilda’s friends and we hung out together. I got to be really good friends with Howard who left Saturday Night Live in 1980 [and then started a successful] career doing film score music. So, he said to use G.E. because he’s there. So, it just happened that because I knew these guys it was much easier for them to just use me than to go auditioning people. I could do it and they knew that they could be friends with me. So, there I was. I was very lucky. You then soon became Dylan’s road band guitarist. That was while I was doing SNL. As you can imagine, there was a lot of frantic airplane travel. I’d be in Brazil and have to be back for SNL and then have to go back the next day.

Stuff like that.
What was your reaction when you actually got the call for Dylan? I was thrilled because I was a huge Dylan fan from the first album. His first album came out [in 1962] and he’s a few years older than me, but basically he wasn’t that much older than me with an acoustic guitar and that’s who I was at that time. I was kind of folky. I loved that record. I still do songs from that record. Playing with Bob was great. Any memorable moments from working with him? Endless. One of the great ones we played in London. Whenever Bob would play, musicians would come. It was packed that night with world-known musicians. There was a point in the show, it was an electric show, it was just Bob and I with acoustic guitars and it was nice because he could do anything he wanted. We wouldn’t even have to talk about it. He knew any song, whether I have ever heard it or not, that I would just follow. I’m just kind of filling it in. There’s a lot of that on his records. The way the stage would be set up was there was just one spotlight and I’m off to his right on the edge of the spotlight so that my face isn’t in the spotlight, but my hands and the guitar are. We were doing “Mr. Tambourine Man” and when he gets to that one line, “Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free” it just hit me like, ‘What are you doing here doing this? I’m just a kid from Pennsylvania and how would I dare do this?’ But there I was. Did you ever tell him that? That you couldn’t believe that you were there? I think I might’ve told him that. Bob doesn’t like being praised. He treated me like almost anyone I’ve ever worked with has treated me: with great respect, kindness, and generosity. Roger Waters and Bob and Mick Jagger, they’ve all been great. You hear stories about them, but not from me. They were great. In the fall of ’92 in October they did that 30-year anniversary thing and I was the director for that and that was fantastic. To get to play with all of these people like Eric Clapton, Lou Reed, and George Harrison on Bob’s songs. Dylan has been touring every year since 1988. Is the road where you think Bob is most comfortable? Not staying at home and writing as much as before and performing? Bob loves the road. He loves to play. I don’t want to speak for him because I certainly don’t take care of his mind, but I do know that he loves to play. He enjoys getting out there and rockin’ and rollin’. Is there anything you have on your list that you’d still like to accomplish as a guitarist? I’ve been really lucky and got to do a lot of things. I’ve always thought that I’d make a great rhythm guitar player for Neil Young. I got to play with Neil a few times. I always wanted to tour with him and be his second guitar player because I love the way he plays guitar. ■ (Read more from this interview online at acweekly.com) see more online @

Valentine’s Day means romance at the multiplex By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com
H
ollywood moguls always hope Valentine’s Day means an opportunity to encourage couples to hit the multiplex as part of their holiday celebration. Jason Reitman’s latest movie, Labor Day, viewed at the Toronto Film Festival, has a rather unlikely premise — but I liked it. Kate Winslet stars as Adele, an emotionally withdrawn recluse whose 13-year-old son Henry (Gattin Griffin) tries to protect her. During a rare trip to town for school supplies they are approached by a man, Frank (Josh Brolin), who turns out to be an escaped felon who needs a place to lay low. He forces his way into their lives and the longer he stays the less menacing he becomes. He repairs things, cooks for them and by the time he gathers the ingredients for a peach pie we are in full blown sexual expression via pastry with a gooey bowl of peaches being jointly massaged by Adele and Frank. Yes, it is silly and frankly unbelievable considering her frail emotional state, but the performances are so touching, I went with it. Arriving next week just in time for Valentie’s Day weekend is Winter’s Tale, a romantic tale that spans 100 years and includes Lucifer’s henchman (Russell Crowe) trying to break up a star-crossed couple played by Colin Farrell and Jessica Brown Findlay (Downton Abbey). However, if you looking for something right now to slip into your DVR or order from Netflix, here are a few selections. The Notebook (2004) — An obvious choice but it really does deliver a powerful romantic vibe as we watch the ups and downs of a poor boy and a rich girl (Ryan Gosling, Rachel McAdams). Still the best of the Nicolas Sparks adaptations, from director Nick Cassavetes. Notting Hill (1999) — Julia Roberts is at her most luminous and vulnerable as a movie star who meets a quiet British bookstore owner (Hugh Grant) and sparks
Sleepless in Seattle (1993) — Everybody is sleepless in Seattle after the 2014 Super Bowl win. This romantic dramedy is one of the best romantic films ever with Tom Hanks heartbreaking as a widower with a young son who is trying to find him a new love by calling a late night talk show. Meg Ryan hears the boy and his father on the radio and the quest for a hook-up begins. Directed by Nora Ephron with a nod to An Affair to Remember. An Affair to Remember (1957) — More than 50 years after it was first released, this romantic drama starring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr is still a crowd pleaser as one of the best tearjerkers in movie history, hence its being referenced in Sleepless in Seattle. Bell, Book and Candle (1958) — This is my go to romantic comedy since it has an offbeat premise and director Richard Quine is a master of the genre. Kim Novak, a witch, decides to bewitch her neighbor (James Stewart) as a prank, but when she really begins to fall for him, she will lose her powers. Two great movie stars surrounded by a fabulous supporting cast (Jack Lemmon, Ernie Kovacs, Elsa Lanchester, Janice Rule, Hermione Gingold) deliver a wonderful lesson in true romance. ■

What’s Shakin’? Bacon Week!

The Trop’s second annual event promises heapin’ helpings of the porky goodness. By Frank Gabriel • feedback@acweekly.com

FEBRUARY 6 - 12, 2014 • ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY
I
ngeniously filling Atlantic City’s midwinter doldrums between the three-day weekends celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King and Presidents Day, the Tropicana has created a holiday worthy of culinary elation: Bacon Week. This year’s second annual event promises more doses of porky goodness than you could possibly imagine, as chefs and retailers alike combine to offer up a diverse selection of bacon-related food, beverage and specialties. Scheduled Sunday through Saturday, Feb. 9-15, Bacon Week participants include the Trop’s nearly two dozen denizens throughout the property. No small degree of creativity has been shown in terms of theme ingredient utilization, menus read like a weeklong, multioutlet version of Iron Chef or Chopped. From our perspective, here are some highlights, followed by a listing of other bacony pleasures planned by Tropicana and associated entities. Start at one of our favorite new restaurants, Casa Taco and Tequila, with bacon churros, bacon jalapeno corn bread, chicken bacon cheese steak tacos with a side of charros beans, and a smoky anejo Siembre Azul margarita with brown sugar and bacon rim. For sheer heft, a pair of massive BLTs from Hooters — theirs featuring a halfpound of bacon — and Seaside Café, with a full pound, should nicely satisfy those craving sizeable sandwich fare. Broadway Burger Bar plans both a stuffed bacon-wrapped burger plus daily bacon burger menu additions, along with baconinfused bourbon.
Super 1lb. BLT available at Seaside Café
Cuba Libre, one of Atlantic City’s most underrated restaurants, plans to present tocinillos; bacon-wrapped Medjool dates filled with parmesan cheese. Finally, check out the retro sweets from Bacon Bites; including bacon-infused Oreos, Devil Dogs, Yodels, Ring Dings and Twinkies plus chocolate-covered bacon, peanut butter bacon and bacon brownies. Other intriguing desserts will abound, including a maple bacon fritter from Mrs. Fields, bacon chocolate lava cake from The Bar at Fin and a bacon bourbon glazed Guinness sundae from Irish eatery Ri Ra. Additional options include: Firewaters — the Baconator, a bacon beer cocktail featuring Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier, an imported German smoked
brew. Ri Ra — bacon infused vodka Rumba Lounge and Tango’s — bacon
infused bourbon cocktails Create a Cone — bacon milkshakes A Dam Good Deli — bacon bonanza sub (ham, prosciutto, bacon and provolone.) A Dam Good Sports Bar — fried baconwrapped jalapeno shrimp tossed in buffalo sauce; bacon and sausage pinwheel burger with grilled onion, roasted peppers and provolone. Carmine’s — pomodoro, made-to-order fresh plum tomato sauce with white wine, prosciutto, garlic and herbs over choice of pasta, chicken or veal saltimbocca, topped with a spinach marsala sauce or carbonara, a classic, creamy-cheesy sauce with the fla-

The Trop also has a Bacon Week hotel package including overnight accommodations and a $20 drink credit at Tango’s or Rumba available Feb. 9-13 for $65 or Friday, Feb. 14, for $189. Call 1-800-345-6787 and use booking code TBACON2. Rates do not include tax and occupancy fees. ■ see more online @

The rock outfit from Mississippi brings intimate, acoustic Basement Songs tour to Borgata. By Ed Condran • feedback@acweekly.com

hen something works, just go with it. That’s 3 Doors Down’s philosophy. After playing an acoustic show last year in Nashville, the concert went so well that the band decided to go for an unplugged tour. “It was awesome,” guitarist Chris Henderson tells Atlantic City Weekly while calling from Tulsa. “There was great interaction between the crowd and the band in Nashville. Everything flowed. Nothing was scripted. We had people hollering back and forth. There were no bells and whistles. It was just organic. It was so inspired and in the moment that we decided to do a whole acoustic tour.” 3 Doors Down, which hails from Escatawpa, Mississippi, will break it down unplugged Friday, Feb. 7, at the Borgata’s Music Box in Atlantic City. “Fans are surprised how intimate the set up is,” Henderson says of the show. “They can get really close. There’s no barricade. During a recent show, I was looking at some Instagram shots from fans and they were right in my face. It was awesome. We’re all on the same level. I love that the barriers are knocked down. That’s a great way to perform. You make that connection.”
facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly
“It’s fun to watch bands play a song that’s been deconstructed. It’s easy for us because our songs are written on acoustic guitar.” When the band announced the tour, Henderson’s mind raced back 20-years ago when MTV’s Unplugged was one of the hottest series on the music network. “Nothing beats Nirvana’s Unplugged,” Henderson says. “That was just flat out amazing. There was no other band like them. Their songs could work in any form. They were that good. That show was great, but the Kiss Unplugged was awesome too. It’s fun to watch bands play a song that’s been deconstructed. It’s easy for us because our songs are written on acoustic guitar.” Expect the hits, such as “Kryptonite,” “When I’m Gone” and “Here Without You” during the band’s Basement Songs tour. “If I saw my favorite band and they didn’t play my favorite songs, I would be pretty angry,” Henderson says. “You can count on us to play the favorites. I don’t know how to do it any other way.”
3 Doors Down, which also includes vocalist Brad Arnold, bassist Justin Biltonen, guitarist Chet Roberts and drummer Greg Upchurch, doesn’t have any new tunes to play, but Henderson says the band is headed back into the studio soon. “We’re going to work on a new album as soon as we’re done with this tour,” Henderson says. “The new songs are in their infancy. We’re in no rush. The songs get done when they’re done.” Henderson, whose band plays Atlantic City often, hopes the weather will be nice enough so he can jog on the Atlantic City Boardwalk. “Who knows how things will go since this has been a weird winter,” Henderson says. “I remember the last time we were in New Jersey, I was jogging in Asbury Park. I couldn’t run on the boardwalk because of the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy. I’m hoping that I’ll be more successful when it comes to outdoor adventures this time in New Jersey.

“It didn’t work out well last time, but I’m hoping it’ll be good weather. We love playing Jersey because the fans are always so into it.” Don’t expect Henderson to spend any time in the casinos gambling. “That’s just not me,” Henderson says. “There’s a reason the casinos look the way they look. The house wins and that’s fine. That’s the way it is. Obviously there are a lot of people that are fine with that. They come out to the casinos and I’m sure a lot of those people come out to shows and see bands like us.” Perhaps Henderson will have a chance to try some fine dining in Atlantic City in lieu of a gambling experience. “That’s more of my thing,” Henderson says. “I know Atlantic City has a lot of cool restaurants and clubs. That would be great if I could check some of that out. But the coolest thing for me would be running on that Boardwalk and looking out at the ocean. It’s a shame that it won’t be summer or even spring when we’re there but as long as it’s dry and not too cold, that would be good for me. “That Boardwalk is amazing. It’s long and there are things to do and it’s cool for people watching. But before I get too far, it’s mostly about the show and we’re going to do our best. Atlantic City has always been really good to us. The fans there are very enthusiastic. It’s always been a great time for us there.” ■ see more online @
Red Line Classic Charity Hockey Game Sunday, Feb. 9, 3pm, Boardwalk Hall How Much: $20, $50, $100
EVENT INFO Rick Tocchet, who played 18 years in the NHL, including 10 years with the Flyers, is currently a pre and post-game analyst for the Flyers on Comcast SportsNet. He gave Atlantic City Weekly the lowdown on his participation in the Red Line Classic. Luckily for Tocchet, he had a chance to get in some extra ice time. “I don’t skate as much as I used to,” explains Tocchet, “but I just did a hockey fantasy camp at Maryland University and played five or six games in four days. This is not for keeps but you still want to have a competitive game. Some of the guys can really play [like] Mark Recchi, who is just a year or two removed from the league.” So who is he looking forward to seeing on the ice? “Mark Howe is one of my favorite players of all time. I’ve played a lot with Brian Propp so just seeing them on the ice will be a thrill for me. Kenny Daneyko from the New Jersey Devils, we used to go at it pretty hard but I know him off the ice and he’s a great guy.” Knowing Flyers fans, I expect the former Devils’ enforcer to hear some friendly boos at Boardwalk Hall on Sunday. ■

ome might argue that the Philadelphia Flyers’ biggest rival is the Pittsburgh Penguins, while some would counter that the New Jersey Devils take the mosthated-opponent crown. That said, when former players from both the Flyers and Devils take to the ice at Boardwalk Hall on Sunday, Feb, 9 in the Red Line Classic, the rivalry will be all in fun as the teams are playing in the game to benefit two important charities. Proceeds from this game will benefit All Hands Working and the Barkann Family Healing Hearts Foundation. Featured stars for the main event are Mark Recchi, Rick Tocchet, Joe Watson, Brian Propp, Todd Fedoruk, Bob Kelly, Brian Boucher and Mark Howe for the Flyers’ Orange Team and Jim Dowd, Ken Daneyko, Bruce Driver, Grant Marshall, Randy Velischek, Jaroslav Modry and actor Alan Thicke (yes, Robin Thicke’s dad) for the Devil’s White Team.
