rom as far back as he can remember, Pennsylvania’s Scott Segelbaum has been passionate about rock and roll. The self-described “huge Beatles fan” is also a music-history junkie. One day in 1991, while living in Los Angeles, Segelbaum had an epiphany while looking at some of the drawings the late John Lennon had done. “And I realized,” he says, “this is really interesting because Jerry Garcia did artwork, Ronnie Wood does artwork. [So] I thought: Why don’t I do a rock and roll art show? And because I was in L.A., everyone lived there and all these rock stars started doing artwork for our show. We had an opening night party and Elton John, Stevie Nicks, Brian Wilson, Graham Nash, Robby Krieger — they all came out for the show, and that’s how this whole thing got started. The thing in question is a touring show and sale featuring artwork created by musicians, shots from esteemed rock photographers, concert posters, gold records and even playbills. Local classic rock station Kool 98.3 is presenting Segelbaum’s next show — being held inside an empty store inside the Hamilton Mall Friday, Feb. 8, to Sunday, Feb. 10. Enter the mall using the Ruby Tuesday side entrance this weekend (10am-9pm Fri. & Sat.; 11am-6pm Sun.) and you will soon discover an astonishing collection of about 200 framed pieces of art featuring musicians such as Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Jerry Garcia, Jimi Hendrix, Tony Bennett, Jon Anderson (of Yes), Ronnie Wood, Johnny Cash, Bon Jovi and more. You will also find rare concert posters and animation art. One of the coolest pieces in the show, which is always being modified as it travels from town to town, is an extremely rare, limited edition (nearly 300) lithograph print of a painting by Bob Dylan that has never been on exhibit in America before. Dylan also signed the framed print, which was a part of his recent “Drawn Blank” exhibit in Europe. Never-before-seen early Bon Jovi photos, original art by Yellow Submarine cartoonist Ron Campbell and works by the late Who bassist John Entwistle are also featured. Come to browse or to buy (everything is for sale); either way, this is a rare opportunity to see the works of or related to some of the biggest names in music all under roof. The show is free!

Atlantic City Beach Riders By Lori Hoffman

ne of the most striking moments in the movie The King of Marvin Gardens is a scene with Jack Nicholson and 1/16/13 1:59 PM Bruce Dern on horseback on the Atlantic City beach. Horseback rides on the beach were a long-standing tradition in Atlantic City that has come and gone in more recent times. However, after a five years of no equine opportunities, the tradition has returned thanks the Writers Alliance RD, a Native American company. The company is currently offering horseback rides from MLK Blvd. and the beach, and a pony ring on the Indiana Avenue beach, weather permitting of course. The rides are scheduled Wed.-Sun., 10am-4pm. It costs $25 for a half-hour trot from Schiff’s Central Pier and the Pier Shops at Caesars and $5 for a pony ride in the ring. The return of horseback riding is part of the Atlantic City Tourism District’s master plan to provide family friendly tourist attractions. The horseback riding is a winter attraction, offered late November through April 1.

esorts Casino Hotel was the first casino to open in Atlantic City because it was able to build on an existing structure, the elegant Haddon Hall. That turn-of-thecentury structure also made it ideal for the art deco, 1920s feel the late Dennis Gomes and co-owner Morris Bailey brought to Resorts when they purchased the property in December 2010 and re-branded it with a theme that tied into the hit HBO TV series Boardwalk Empire. Giannantonio also announced that the Margaritaville expansion of the casino was going smoothly and that Resorts would be opening a food court. “Our owners, Morris Bailey and Mohegan Sun, are working hard to create an atmosphere at Resorts that is going to be fun and exciting. hen Dweezil Zappa decided it was time to introduce a new generation to his father’s music and call it “Zappa Plays Zappa,” he didn’t realize the project would be so labor intensive. Guess he forgot that his father Frank Zappa’s career included more than 60 albums, each one seemingly more complicated than the last, and literally a thousand or more songs. “Back before I started this project [in 2006], I noticed a lot of people my age didn’t know about Frank’s music, so that was a big reason to try and expand the audience base and keep his musical legacy alive,” Zappa said during a November interview with the British music Web site getreadytorock.com. But it took a lot more than just learning a few songs like a cover band and going out and playing the music. Zappa, 43, said he needed to reexamine the music he’d grown up with in order to do justice to the compositions of his dad, who was considered a musical genius in some circles. “I had to make some technical adjustments, and it took about two years of study before I thought I could play this challenging music,” he said. “In some ways I did have to change radically. It really had more to do with certain parts, most obviously the solos. I’d be playing the parts pretty much as they were written down, but when I came to focusing on the solos I aimed to put my own spin on them — to try and evoke Frank’s playing, but to do more than merely copy a solo.” For decades, music theorists have discussed, dissected and analyzed Frank Zappa’s wide-ranging body of work that stretched from 1966, when he formed his first band, the Mothers of Invention, and released his debut (double) album Freak Out! (with opening track, “Hungry Freaks, Daddy”}, until 1993, when he died of prostate cancer at age 53, but not before releasing a modern classical album (The Yellow Shark). It’s been nearly seven years since Dweezil introduced “Zappa Plays Zappa,” and it’s turned out to be an ever-changing work in progress. Zappa wasn’t exaggerating when he said it can often take months for he and his band to learn one song and perform it just the way his dad did years earlier. “With Frank’s music we have actually learned 250 pieces since 2006, but that doesn’t mean we could just play them at the drop of a hat,” he explained. “Generally we go into a tour with between 30 and 40 songs that we can play.” During a Jan. 24 concert in Houston, Zappa offered up interpretations of 25 songs that included “Zomby Woof,” which his dad released 40 years ago; “Tryin’ To Grow a Chin” (1979), “Cosmic Debris” (1974) and

Zappa, who brings “Zappa Plays Zappa” to Harrah’s Resort on Friday (Feb. 8), said his goal is to stick to the original arrangements whenever possible. “That’s what we try and do as the aim is to preserve whichever version it is we are playing at the time. The aim is to present the music in just the same way as when you first heard it on the record,” he said. “Each song had a particular instrumentation which relates to a period of time and we try and get that authentic sound. But there are moments when we do improvise. One example would be ‘Bamboozled By Love,’ which originally was recorded as two different versions with two different tempos. So we might take the two different tempos and fuse them with one hybrid arrangement.” Dweezil Zappa’s career has included stints as a teenaged VJ on MTV (who got fired after he criticized the music channel on Howard Stern’s radio show), an actor, but mostly as a very talented musician who performs solo, with his band and often with other top artists. The impetus for launching “Zappa Plays Zappa” was very simple, he said. It’s all about preserving his father’s musical legacy to a generation that had never heard of Frank Zappa. “That was our goal right across the board,” he said. “When I started in 2006 [the audience] tended to be guys over 55 mainly. Sometimes they’d bring the kids or an occasional girlfriend but generally there were very few women. But now I notice we get college kids, which is what we aimed for [from the] start.” ■

f you haven’t had the time or money to put your Valentine’s Day plans into action, don’t worry. This Valentine’s Day, build a connection with that special someone by learning and trying new things together. Romance your sweetie with these cheap and unique date ideas in the area: Couples Cooking: Making a meal together can be a fun activity for couples to indulge in. Couples might prefer to pick up a cookbook and try out a new recipe at home, or opt to take a local cooking class to learn from the professionals. Many local eateries and cooking schools have cooking classes that available to the public. On Feb 14, Harrah’s Viking Cooking School is offering a Chocolate Lover’s Workshop from 11am to 2pm for $89, and The Sweet Life Bakery in Vineland is offering a “Couples Night” at 6pm for $30, where they will be teaching about and making aphrodisiac foods. Both offer classes regularly to the public, so check their Web sites for complete class schedules. In addition, every Friday at 6pm, the Atlantic City Country Club sponsors “Spectacular Cooking Demo Nights,” while Tony Boloney’s in Atlantic City offers a Pizza Making Class, open to the public from 9-11am for $60 every Saturday.

Valentine’s Vino: With several wineries in the area to choose from, taking a winery tour is not only cheap, but it’s also a convenient date idea. Balic Winery in Mays Landing, Renault Winery in Egg Harbor City, and Tomasello Winery in Galloway are all perfect for those interested in learning how wine is made. Cape May also has four wineries (The Cape May Winery and Vineyard, Willow Creek Winery, Turdo Vineyards, and Natali Vineyards). Typically, the winery tours are free and guests can do some wine sampling at the end of the tour. Couples can even center their evening around a central theme, such as a “Camp-in” complete with a tent set-up indoors, burgers and hot dogs for dinner, and S’mores for dessert. Another theme idea: Host a game night for two. In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, host your own version of Newlywed Game to see how much you know about one another. Later, learn a new card game together or have your sweetie teach you one you never played before, then turn up the heat with a game of strip poker. There is no limit to the creativity couples can have with this date idea. Get the Ball Rolling: When deciding what to do for Valentine’s Day, don’t overlook a favorite pastime. Bowling is a fun date idea for the young and old alike. Challenge each other in a one-on-one game of bowling at Strike Zone Lanes in Egg Harbor City, King Pin Bowling in Egg Harbor Township, or Di Donato’s Bowling Center in Hammonton. Prices are fair — $3 to $3.50 for a shoe rental and $2 to $5 per game depending on the facility and time of visit. Games go quick when playing with just two, so take your time. Visit on a weekday to avoid the younger (read: noisy) crowd and to get cheaper prices. Hit the Rinks: Bring out your inner child by visiting an ice-skating or roller-skating rink this Valentine’s Day. Try the Flyer’s Skate Zone in Atlantic City for ice skating. Or, if you prefer wheels to blades, head over to Young’s Skating Center in Mays Landing. Skate rentals cost between $2 and $4, depending on which skate you prefer, while admission can range from $5 to $10. Book It: Take advantage of discount travel Web sites — such as Travelocity, Orbitz, and Hotel Tonight — to find deals on one-night hotel stays. These sites feature hotel stays as low as $40 per night at well-known area locations such as Resorts, Caesars, and the Seaview Hotel and Golf Club. During the winter, casinos in Atlantic City offer low prices, so take advantage of it! While the destination may be close to home, you can still make it a fun escape. Meet at the hotel after work on Valentine’s Day and — voila! — a change of scenery can do wonders. Atlantic City, for example, offers everything you need for a romantic night, including room service, latenight eateries, plush hotel rooms with waterfront views, a plethora of fine-dining options, spas, clubs, and, perhaps best of all, no cleaning up (after the kids). These cheap date ideas work the whole year round, mind you. Make date nights part of your regular routine. Try writing date ideas on strips of paper and throwing them into a jar. Once per week, or once per month, select a “date” at random from the jar to keep the romance brewing in your relationship. ■

The sweeping ocean view and daring executive chef, Joseph Muldoon, combine to challenge preconceived notions associated with the steak house genre. A special Valentine’s Day menu demonstrates: apps include long-stem artichokes paired with Spanish navel orange jewels or a Maine lobster and frisee salad tossed with a crème fraiche citronette. With all the jaunty charm of an anachronistic roadhouse from another era, this second incarnation of icon Joe Italiano’s vision for Italian-American cookery entices travelers with the famous Black Horse Pike signage promising “World’s Best Spaghetti.” Trust me, that is not a vainglorious boast. In fact, they serve one of the sexiest plates of seafood and pasta on the planet — Uncle Nino, which is bursting with lobster, shrimp, Dungeness crab and clams in either red or white sauce. Authentic food of the Emerald Island — Colcannon Potatoes or Bangers and Mash — alongside diversity like a brilliant starter of smoked salmon pizza on grilled flat bread with dill aioli and reasonably-priced steak by the ounce. Don’t miss one of the dozen or so creative sauces for meat and seafood. A cozy booth on the elevated section opposite the sometimes-raucous bar makes for an ideal Valentine’s Day dinner spot. Anywhere on The Pier at Caesars. While retail here still struggles, food options seemed to have settled since the unexpected departure of sports bar Game On! and Gaelic pub The Trinity. Pared down to five operations — Souzai Sake and Sushi, Phillips Seafood, Piazzi di Giorgio plus Steven Starr’s duet of Buddakan and The Continental — the Pier still provides a variety of culinary options. The atmosphere — dangling high above the Ocean — is always dreamy night, day, rain, shine or this time of year, in the magic that is snow on the beach. ■

FEATURE >> from being a different movie? M: I think it’s different because it’s not a parody. It’s just a movie itself. All these people keep thinking it’s a parody; its not. It’s a romantic horror comedy with parody moments. It’s got some parody moments in it, but it’s really just familiar moments that we kind of flipped, but it’s not a parody. If you never saw a paranormal film this will [still] be enjoyable. It’s not a movie that you need a reference for you to enjoy it. Shawn and I were talking about you guys growing up. If it was a humorous household and if there was a lot of laughter around the dinner table. He said that it was a funny experience, do you remember the same? M: Oh, absolutely. There was a bunch of laughing. We laughed our whole childhood. That’s why we laugh till this day because we just love laughter. Marlon how long have you been doing stand-up comedy? M: Probably like [almost] three years now.

Are you on stage together when you do these duo stand-up shows? Shawn: No, we don’t go on stage together. It’s a tag team. One guy goes on and he does his set. Then the next guy comes after him and does his set. So there’s no time when you’ll be together for the show? S: We go pick our check up at the same time. Any memorable experiences from your days on In Living Color? S: The whole thing was a memorable experience. That was me and Marlon’s comedy college of everything we know. All the stuff we do today we learned from In Living Color. [It] taught us how to perform comedy. It taught us how to write. It taught us discipline. It taught us work ethics, and how serious the game of comedy really is. I think it was a wonderful experience and lots of fun. [We] laughed all day long. Do you still keep in touch with the non-family members from that show? S: I still talk to Tommy Davidson every now and then. When I see Jim Carey we always talk and have a good time — same for Jamie Foxx and David [Alan Grier]. And anybody else you saw on the show. It’s like If you went to school with somebody and you see one of your old classmates. What were your favorite TV shows growing up? S: I loved The Honeymooners and I Love Lucy and I used to watch Good Times, and The Jeffersons and Archie Bunker [All in the Family]. I used to also watch a lot of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis.

Abbott and Costello, they were great. All the great classic shows that were on back then Marlon and me kind of grew up on. We studied that when we were little. There are so many talented and funny members of your immediate family. Did you have a lot of humor in your household? At the dinner table, for instance, was it a laugh riot most of the time? S: Yeah, it was very funny. There were lots of laughs. We were always laughing. Despite our economic situation we found humor in it. Hello Marlon, where are you calling from? Marlon: I’m in D.C. Just went to the Inauguration. It was a good experience to be there and hear the speech live and feel the energy. It was beautiful to see all the people come out and rally behind the president. I wish we did that kind of thing everyday. I think we would get a lot more done. S: Did you look at Beyoncé’s butt while she was singing the National Anthem? M: I tried so hard but I couldn’t. I didn’t get a good view. I was so mad. S: You should have [taken] Bill Clinton’s seat; he got a good look at her ass. Marlon, you’ve been promoting your new film — M: Yeah, lately, I have been waking up very early [to promote] my movie. So I have been on the road for two months literally getting up at five o’clock in the morning everyday. I’ve been reading about how A Haunted House is unlike the Scary movies. How is it different — aside

Have you ever performed in Atlantic City before? S: I have — a long time ago at a Trump casino. Right when [the first] Scary Movie opened. Right when Trump’s hair looked exactly the way it does now. Have you ever been to Atlantic City before Marlon? M: I have. I actually went to see Shawn perform. Him and Damon — right Shawn? S: No, my show was just me. [Anyway], we haven’t spent a lot of time in Atlantic City, but we have been there. Your nephews Craig and Damien Dante have a new series called Second Generation Wayans on BET, which just debuted Jan. 15. M: Yeah, it put up 4.7 million viewers. Really successful. How did Craig and Damien take the success of the show’s debut? M: Like any other kid [would take] it — [they] went out, partied and drank enough to almost get arrested. How old are Craig and Damien? M: Craig is a couple of years younger than me. [As for] Damien, we don’t know the date [he was born]. When we found him he didn’t have a birth certificate. Have there ever been stand-up duos featuring brothers that do it the way you guys do it — one brother takes the stage then the other brother? M: I don’t know. Normally they do it together. As an audience member I would be like, ‘One of you needs to come out of there, I’m trying to hear the funnier one.’ Damon and Shawn did it before me and Shawn did it. S: Yeah, I used to open for Damon. ■

ver the past two years brothers Shawn and Marlon Wayans have taken their comedy show on the road, performing stand-up together all over the country — and soon the globe, as the pair heads to Australia in May and other countries following that. Some may know the Wayans Brothers from their eponymous TV sitcom, which aired from 1995-’99, and was the first TV series to debut on the WB network. Others may recall seeing the young brothers on the hilarious sketch-comedy TV show In Living Color, which aired on FOX from 1990-’94 and starred older Wayans brothers Keenan and Damon, in addition to future superstars Jim Carey, Tommy Davidson, Jamie Foxx, Rosie Perez and David Alan Grier. Since The Wayans Brothers went off the air — it still runs in syndication — the brothers have branched out into Hollywood, writing and starring in goofy yet hysterical movies such as White Chicks, Scary Movie (parts one and two) and the 1996 spoof Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood. While older brother Shawn, 42, has been taking it easy of late, “writing a new movie” and spending time with his own family in Los Angeles where he currently resides, Marlon, 40, also a California resident now — the Wayans were born and raised in New York — has a new film out, A Haunted House. The youngest of 10 siblings, Marlon says the new movie, which he helped write and produce and stars in, is not a parody in the sense that the Scary Movie pictures are, but more of a horror comedy poking fun at the “found footage” genre of filmmaking and the modern fascination with ghosts and paranormal activity. Shawn and Marlon, who will bring their standup comedy show to Atlantic City Feb. 9 at the intimate Borgata Music Box, spoke to AC Weekly the day after President Obama’s Inauguration for a second term. Shawn dialed in from California, while Marlon spoke from his hotel room in Washington D.C. where he attended the Jan. 21 Inauguration. (He was a little late for this interview and jumps on the call several minutes after Shawn.)

How do you like it? M: Best thing that’s ever happened to me. I feel like I’m growing. Getting better and a lot smarter about comedy. I understand it a lot better than I used to. You start taking your chances and you start being able to articulate thoughts and it’s just a beautiful thing.

The 34th annual show is in town now through Sunday, Feb. 10, and is 50 percent larger, encompassing about 374,000 square feet. According to show manager Jon Pritko, this year has an expanded lineup of boats (around 400, from 12 feet up to 48), its Marine Marketplace (all the latest electronics and boating accessories), workshops, seminars and family attractions. There will also be a giveaway drawing for a boat-motor-trailer package worth $41,000. For a complete list of special events, go to acboatshow.com and click the “Highlights” menu. “The focus is largely on education again but everything’s new — we have a whole new schedule of educational seminars this year,” says Pritko. “We’ve also added a lot of activities for kids that are free. We have our createa-boat where kids can make their own little creation by gluing stuff onto a wooden hull — a lot of family friendly activity. “The Miss Geico [world champion speedboat] is back, but this year it’s a different race boat [a 50-foot Victory catamaran that can hit 200mph], and they always bring a bunch of different toys with them too. Everything they do is extreme. over a four-stroke motor, or if you are using it in that application, that is why you might want a four-bladed prop in place of a three-bladed prop — that sort of thing.” Shapiro says the seminars tend to attract two types of attendees — those who enjoy doing their own maintenance and those who want to better educate themselves prior to bringing a boat to the shop for repair. “The do-it-yourselfers or ‘weekend warriors’ is one main group that finds the seminars useful,” he says. “The other main group is the people who really have no interest in working on their boats, but they want to have confidence when they show up at that boat-maintenance facility to say, ‘This is what I’ve experienced, I think this is the problem,’ and know that the maintenance person is going to see that they have some understanding or concept of what’s going on, and be less likely to try to pull something over on them, which is an unfortunate reality in a lot of industries. Obviously we try to showcase the best in our industry’s maintenance personnel. The core of Fred’s Shed is to give real advice — knowledgeable, historical advice without trying to sell you something.”

Toothy Twist to Boat Show A bad day at work for the average Joe might mean a chewing out by the boss for a careless mistake. But for Jeff Quattrocchi, a bad mistake could mean a chewing out of a much more serious sort. In fact in May 2010 Quattrocchi — host of the entertaining and educational Swampmaster Gator Show that is a new amenity to the A.C. Boat Show — nearly lost an arm when a miscalculation resulted in an aggressive alligator clamping down on his right biceps at a festival near Tampa, Florida. He fought himself free from the beast, but was put out of commission for several weeks and needed nearly 60 staples

Ari Shapiro co-hosts Fred’s Shed with certified boating technicians from the Annapolis School of Seamanship. “These are people who have years of experience in boating and boat maintenance,” says Shapiro. “The seminars cover fuel systems and overall maintenance for both gas and diesel, we’ll talk about propellers, marine electronics, water pumps, cooling systems ... everything. “Our last seminar of the weekend is an hour-and-a-half long seminar for the beginning boater that takes you from considering a boat through being comfortable with knowing what to look for — kind of your basic rules of the road, if you will. Generally all the seminars are designed to be a conversational style with Q&A moments. “We work for the [Long Island, NYC-based] National Marine Manufacturers Association, so we’re not there to endorse specific products,” he adds. “Instead, we might recommend that if you’re going to be using [a boat] in this application, this is why you might want a two-stroke

and stitches to fix his wounds. Such is the life of the traveling showman who deals with potentially deadly critters, something Quattrocchi has been doing for about 17 years. His Swampmaster show has the support of fish-and-game commissions nationwide, and is recognized as an effective, humane program designed to educate the public about the behaviors of the American alligator in an entertaining way. He often riles up the gators and puts them into attack mode before subduing them, but it is a far cry from what many may know as the circus sideshow called alligator wrestling. “It’s not man against beast, there’s no winner-loser, that’s exactly what it’s not,” Quattrocchi tells AC Weekly. “It’s more of a public-awareness show about alligators with a thrill show involved. I like to call it a skilled demonstration of alligator handling. “There’s a lot of smoke-and-mirrors with alligator wrestling, and that’s what we don’t do. I’m going to show you the natural aggressive behavior of an alligator, and clear up any misconceptions about them. If you ever come

to Florida you might run into one. There are about 1.5 million [wild] alligators in Florida, and we talk a little bit about why an alligator might attack a person.” Quattrocchi began his career as host of an alligator show at a south Florida theme park before learning to become a handler, and eventually becoming chief handler. He would typically do about 1,000 theme-park shows per year before hatching an idea to take the show on the road. “I watched the handling and decided to learn how to do it, made a couple of pretty bad mistakes starting out, but decided to keep doing it,” he says. “Pretty soon I was doing five shows a day, every day, for minimal pay and I thought ‘Hey, people are traveling down to Florida to see an alligator show, what if I brought the show [to them]?’ So I got an agent that did a lot of animal acts and I’ve been with the same agent ever since.” He now does about 300 shows per year at various festivals throughout the country. His appearances in Atlantic City (1pm, 3pm and 6pm Thursday through Saturday; and 11am, 1pm and 3pm Sunday) will be his first in the resort. And while many states also permit him to bring baby alligators along for spectators to touch or hold, New Jersey has a “no touch” rule for exotic animals in traveling shows. So the only contact will be Quattrocchi in a shallow pool with an eight-foot, 200-pound alligator that is not thrilled to be there. All the gators that are part of his shows were once “nuisance” alligators that threatened private property and were professionally trapped (as opposed to farm-raised gators that exist in Florida), and he never uses the same animal in more than 15 shows. “There’s a big difference between jumping on the back of an alligator that’s been handled 200 times compared to one that has never been handled,” he says. “It’s much more of an athletic event to jump on the back of one that’s never been handled. The gators I used will tear your head off. After about 15 shows, when I’m done with them in the show, I retire them to a pond and just let them hang out. So in that regard we’re on somewhat of an animal rescue.” Quattrocchi says he often has to clarify his disassociation from those in some reality TV shows that play up the “redneck” mystique. “People love that redneck stuff these days and hey, I’m a farm boy, I can go out in the woods and hang too,” he says. “But I live in the city [Naples, Florida] and need my amenities. Even when I was doing a show in Cleveland one time, somebody came up to me and said, ‘Hey, you don’t look like those swamp-people guys.’ I said thank you.” ■

hile admitting this is damning with faint praise, Sylvester Stallone delivers a better aging action hero in Bullet to the Head than Arnold Schwarzenegger did in Last Stand. Joining him in the Bullet over-the-hill gang is director Walter Hill, whose resume is dominated by tough guy movies, some of which he also wrote with his sparse style, including Hard Times, 48 Hrs., The Warriors, The Long Riders and Last Man Standing. Bullet to the Head, based on a graphic novel with a screenplay by Alexandro Camon, delivers some of the best hand-tohand and ax-to-ax combat scenes in recent cinematic history. Too many films today use a choppy ultra-close-up visual style for fight scenes that makes them hard to follow. In the big ax scene in Bullet to the Head, Stallone has a pretty amazing showdown with the primary thug, Keegan (Jason Momoa). The story that leads up to the final confrontation is pretty standard tough guy/action movie 101 stuff, including the fact that our mismatched heroes, killerfor-hire Jimmy “Bobo” Bonomo (Stallone) and smart-phone obsessed cop Taylor Kwon (Sung Kang of Fast & Furious fame) are both looking for justice for murdered partners. Bonomo doesn’t care how he gets his revenge, and Kwon wants to stay within the law, which provides a surprisingly effective comedic edge to the story. This isn’t a classic action film, but during a time of the year when film companies are
