Since creating the 2002 lo-fi masterpiece Toothbrush, Philadelphia’s Dr. Dog has gone on to become one of coolest and most revered new bands in the world. An updated (harder rocking) yet not overly-produced sound pervades on the band’s new release, Be The Void, which features 12 songs of “gloriously ramshackle rock ‘n’ roll reveries,” as aptly described by the band’s record label since 2010, Anti-Records. A new drummer Erick Slick and electronics-percussionist-guitarist Dimitri Manos have been added to the mix, helping to turn up the notch a bit on the band’s emotive tunes. Be the Void may not be as memorable as some of the band’s earlier releases (before the guys suddenly became fan and media darlings), but the passion is still evident in the music, which, while based on classic-rock and folk-rock ideas, is some of the most inventive out there. In a nutshell, Dr. Dog’s new sound is less the Band and more the Rolling Stones. —Jeff Schwachter

an’t make it to either of the Boss’ gigs in Philly next month? Show a little faith, there’s magic in the night this Saturday (feb. 11) as the original Bruce Springsteen tribute band (and the longest-running tribute act on the planet) will appear at the tropicana’s Grand exhibition Center starting 9pm. the B Street Band was founded by vocalist/keyboardist Will forte and the band’s original drummer, the late Bob “Chip” Chipak, as Backstreets in asbury Park during the heyday of that shore town’s bustling music scene in 1980. the band has since performed between 175 and 200 shows annually throughout the northeast region, including at n.J. Gov. Chris Christie’s inauguration, and recently on the southern college campuses of Duke and South Carolina. the trop show marks one of many the B Street Band has done in the a.C. area over the years, including a string of eight straight years at the Deck at Golden nugget (formerly trump marina) every thursday night during the summer. “originally we came out of Pennsylvania as a band called Star, but we moved to asbury Park in 1978 when that music scene was really cranking,” says forte, who’s joined on stage by lead guitarist/vocalist Steve Baranian, guitarist/lead vocalist Glenn Stuart, bassist Steve Lopresto, saxophonist Steve myers and drummer Steve Pozzelanti. “We were one of the out-of-state bands that had a following along the Jersey shore, and since we were all fans of Springsteen we always did a medley of maybe five or six of his songs each night. “at that time i noticed there was a real fever for his music, and while [the audiences] seemed to like our band in general, they were really waiting for us to play Springsteen’s stuff. So i made a decision. Beatlemania was popular at the time, and there was a Doors act around, so i had the idea to do just Springsteen music. there was a real yearning for it at that time, and i thought it might be a way to branch off and do something that wasn’t being done all over the place by other bands.” forte says there was some ambivalence as to whether the switch in formats would fly. one of the initial glitches was that since Springsteen is so revered in that part of northern new Jersey (if not yet globally), his legions of fans did not initially take to their idol being imitated. “the [eminent asbury Park nightclub] Stone Pony didn’t want to hire us at first,” Like us:

facebook.com/ACWeekly

says forte. “We actually wound up doing our grand opening at a place called Park Place, about a block away from the Stone Pony. “We were kind of outsiders, and i don’t think some people took kindly to us doing Springsteen music, because he was their boy, per se. But what we did to win over their approval was show them we weren’t doing some cheesy version, or one in which we came across as too full of ourselves. What we did as musicians was add our own interpretation of Bruce’s music. our lead singer Glenn has a persona similar to Springsteen in that they’re both outgoing and like to interact with audiences, but that’s Glenn being Glenn, not someone acting like Bruce.” forte says that the B Street Band never shows up with a regimented set list from night to night, instead improvising each performance. “Jersey people wouldn’t go see an elvis act in Vegas more than once or twice, but our people have followed us for 30 years,” he says. “to keep them coming out as fans, you can’t be doing the same old thing time after time. We never know what the first song’s going to be until we hit our first chord, and we don’t stop in between songs. We’ll run off five or six songs in a row and just let it take us where it takes us.” Since Springsteen’s music continues to transcend generations, B Street’s fan base is equally age-varied, as evidenced by the more than 200 college campuses its played. Several former and current e Street Band (Springsteen’s main touring band) members have joined B Street on stage, among them Stevie Van Zandt, Vini “mad Dog” Lopez, max Weinberg and the late Clarence Clemons. “We’re doing three shows for the Springsteen exhibition in Philly [called From Asbury Park to the Promised Land: The Life and Music of Bruce Springsteen], we’re doing the pre- and post-party shows at the new Xfinity Center [in conjunction with the Boss’ march 28-29 Philly shows], and the trop gig is new for us that we’re really excited about,” says forte. “to be invited to do things like this is a real honor. Some people told us that this tribute-band thing wouldn’t work. after 32 years, i think we proved them wrong.” n

t face value, atlantic city’s entertainment schedule for late winter and into the spring looks surprisingly light. nothing bombastic, no big surprises, no market debuts, pretty much an entertaining collection of the usual suspects. But there’s a wild card buying into the game that could shake things up. However, like a poker player sitting down at the table for the first time, the new kid is playing it close to the vest and isn’t tipping its hand. not yet, anyway. like virtually everything else connected with the property — except for maybe its restaurant lineup — the folks at Revel aren’t ready to reveal any of the acts and attractions booked into Ovation Hall, the multi-purpose room that will be capable of seating up to 5,500 guests for concerts, sporting and special events. One thing you can pretty much take to the bank, though: When Revel president and ceO Kevin DeSanctis said atlantic city’s first new casino in nearly nine years will be looking to book the biggest acts, he isn’t bluffing. “clearly we want to go after the type of artist that can draw 5,500 people, and when you get into that genre ... there’s probably only about 20 acts that can do that,” he said during a late December interview. He said Revel would try to book acts that “will attract a different type of visitor” to atlantic city. “i think [our entertainment schedule] will have some dimension to it,” he added. But that’s as close as he came to revealing any details about Revel’s entertainment schedule. that hasn’t stopped the rumor mill from spinning like a top, though. although Revel is still sticking to a midMay opening of the $2.4 billion destination resort — indeed, a countdown clock on its Web site indicates how many days until the property opens — there’s still speculation the property could open as soon as March. so it’s unlikely that any major shows have been booked prior to May. But sources inside the entertainment community are pointing to either May 19 or 26 as a likely date for a major show to christen the city’s newest entertainment venue. One act that has been mentioned for a

possible Revel date is the band Maroon 5. Revel reportedly outbid another atlantic city casino to book the popular pop rock band, but it’s unlikely they’ll actually christen the new showroom. Revel drew the inspiration for the biggest of its two major entertainment venues by looking at existing rooms and picking the best of the best as a model. “When we went out and decided what we wanted to build from a theater perspective, we looked around the country, found the one we liked the best and said we need one of those,” Desanctis said. “Our theater is very dynamic.” Once Revel is up and running, it also has plans to complete a smaller venue seating between 800 and 1,000 guests. While Ovation Hall can Maroon 5 accommodate up to 5,500 guests, it can be configured to seat between 2,500 and 3,000 people. elsewhere in atlantic city, Borgata and the House of Blues at showboat continue to have the busiest entertainment programs. Between its event center and Music Box showrooms, Borgata will present a mix of artists ranging from modern (Saw Doctors, Tiesto and Florence & The Machine) to longtime atlantic city staples (Liza Minnelli, Joan Rivers). the Music Hall at the House of Blues is offering a mix of established rockers (Guns N’ Roses, War) with alternative acts (Dropkick Murphys, Chevelle). caesars atlantic city is booking a mix of classic artists (Chicago, Smokey Robinson) and acts who are on a fasttrack to achieve that status (Ms. Lauryn Hill, Alison Krauss & Union Station). caesars is also presenting Van Halen at Boardwalk Hall on March 24. to see updated entertainment schedule for all atlantic city casinos, see p.40 or visit acweekly.com. n

Poker Lowdown News on tournaments and other action in area casino poker rooms by Mike Pritchard

P

oker players spend a lot of time at tournaments just hoping to cash and get a taste of the prize money. sure, they dream of hitting big money, but usually just making it past the bubble and getting even a small pay day is enough. and that surely was the live-tournament history of 29-year-old Josh Mancuso of new orleans, better known for online play, until winning this year’s Borgata Winter open Championship feb. 3. dating back to 2008, Mancuso had amassed about $150,000 in live tournament winnings. His biggest cash was for about $42,000 at the 2010 Wsop championship, where he finished 260th. that’s a sweet pay off to be sure, but most of his other hits have been for small payouts of a few thousand dollars. It’s at the Borgata where Mancuso finally breaks out and takes home a massive live tournament cash of $542,771. the four-year pro has also had some big online cashes (more than $900,000 in total), but for live tournaments, the championship more than triples his total cash winnings. “It definitely wasn’t easy. I had to run good and hit hands at the right times,” Mancuso told the Borgata tournament blog. “It validates my online results,” Mancuso says. “Many players haven’t made the transition to live play, so to win a live main event is great.” second place went to Jeff papola of new york, a Wsop bracelet holder, who wins $315,837. In fact, for all the regional success of the Borgata opens and the local players that make good, the Winter open sported a pretty impressive final table stacked with some big-time pros. the final 10 also featured two-time Wsop bracelet holder Brock parker, who finished 7th, and steve dannenmann, the 2005 Wsop main-event runner-up among others. the Borgata’s next major event is its spring poker open: april 4-20. In some other news, two new bills introduced in the new Jersey state legislature designed to help keep atlantic City competitive with other casino markets have cleared the state senate gaming committee. one allows for gamblers to use electronic devices to gamble within a casino. It’s not to be confused with online gaming, but would permit authorized games on approved devices within a casino property. Like us:

1 14 4

las Vegas has had this option since 2005, allowing players to make bets from throughout a property, with the exception of their rooms. the Casino association of new Jersey is pushing for the bill, which it compares to recent moves to expand gaming beyond casino confines, such as in the Quarter at tropicana and the pool at Harrah’s. state sen. Jim Whelan, chair of the gaming committee, said the move is “an attempt to recognize we have a generation of young adults who are used to getting their recreation and communications from the palm of their hand.” officials from the division of Gaming enforcement say they feel that the plan could be properly regulated and, most importantly, kept from potential underage gamblers. another bill would allow non-gaming development projects in the resort’s new tourism district tax credits with a $20 million credit against state taxes over 10 years if the project costs at least $20 million and creates at least 100 jobs. Both bills now go to the senate for a vote. We also have a bad-beat jackpot hit to report, which we’re always glad to do. the trump taj Mahal bad-beat jackpot hit for $291,904 friday, feb. 3, at about 3pm. the players involved don’t want to go public, but the hand is a great reminder of the lessons of Honeymoon in Vegas (not a poker movie, but containing a great poker scene) that no straight flush is unbeatable. Well, except for the royal flush, but whatever. anyway, one player had the six and seven of clubs and the other the jack and queen of clubs. so, of course, the flop was eight, nine, 10 of clubs. the guy with the low-end straight flush, the hand loser, won the bad beat and $145,952 for staying in with a suited six, seven. He may have been the big blind, of course, but it seems to bear out another lesson from a truly great poker movie, The Cincinnati Kid. as edward G. robinson says in the flick, sometimes it comes down to “making the wrong move — at the right time.” and finally, the Golden nugget has announced a new 2012 poker player of the year tournament on July 4 at its Vegas casino. satellites are scheduled for other nugget properties, including its new atlantic City room, but no dates have been announced. n

tockton college deems itself as new Jersey’s distinctive public college, but with other college’s competing for the same students, what will entice prospective young scholars when deciding which college to attend in new Jersey? stockton is one of the most affordable schools within the state, and with the new spring semester already here, stockton can add a bit more culture to its resume. the success of the new college campus center, which opened in the spring of 2011, revamped the look and feel of the campus when it debuted. stockton keeps coming out with new and innovative ways to give the students the education and experience that they would expect from their college. A new Art gallery is a testament to the promise that stockton will live up to the hype of being a distinctive college. the current art gallery exhibition that’s running through Feb. 22 is part of the college’s yearlong celebration of its 40th anniversary. the new bi-level gallery is located adjacent to the Performing Arts center and covers two levels. the gallery’s inaugural exhibition, “new Work by the Visual Arts Faculty,” will cover the first level, while “david Ahlsted: Recent Paintings” can be viewed on the second floor.

Stockton’s new two-floor Art Gallery Ahlsted’s past four murals, new Jersey Pine Barrens: spring, summer, Fall Winter are permanent fixtures within the campus center. current visual arts faculty including marilyn Brent, Alfonso corpus, Frank kallop, michael mcgarvey, Jedediah morfit, Hannah Ueno and Wendel White will also add their own works to the gallery. the lower and upper gallery contains approximately 2,250 square feet, and fea-

tures a floor cutout overlooking the lower gallery. this amount of space gives both current and future artists enough room to showcase their work. the gallery is free and open to the public, and the hours of operation can be found on stockton’s Web site (stockton.edu). stockton President Herman J. saatkamp Jr. is confident that this art gallery will not only make the school more aesthetically inviting, but also give the students,

specifically those involved directly in the arts, an opportunity to fully appreciate the program. “For our students enrolled in programs involving the arts, the facility provides an opportunity to explore ideas and concepts in the visual arts in a manner we previously could not,” saatkamp tells Atlantic City Weekly. “It also supports our new Bachelor of Fine Arts degree program. For our liberal arts students who may have limited access to art on our campus, or museums in the area, this facility fills the void.” stockton has recently introduced a new Bachelor of the Fine Arts degree, which allows students to pick a specific type of media to focus on, making it more personalized to fit that student’s needs. this is on top of the existing Bachelor of Arts degree, which concentrates on either art history or interdisciplinary studio art. the gallery is symbolic of the overall quality that stockton offers, and ensures that the expansion of the campus — which may even include a facility in Atlantic city — will be successful in its attempt to draw the attention towards the college that it truly deserves. n

Big Things Brewing at Tun

The Tun Tavern intends to add such fare as beer-based onion soup, fish and chips, barbecued ribs, pulled pork and more to its menu, as well as some new home brews.

Check out the Tun’s new menu items sweet round flavor.” he also hopes to rely on “more local flavor” for the food side of the operation in general. this includes both “more slow roasts and braises” and creating additional sauces from the proprietary list of beers and ales. A couple of those items appear to have already found their way onto the tun’s menu for Atlantic city’s upcoming restaurant Week (March 4-10). ribs, in the form of a half rack basted in ale-infused chipotle barbecue sauce, will be offered at dinner. Pulled pork, in a sandwich form, is among the lunch selections. in the meantime, Kelly is already well into the planning process for his next batches of

seasonal brews. coming soon to the tun are heffeweisssen, and unfiltered summery wheat with a slightly cloudy appearance, along with a spring/summer Maibock gold lager, possessing higher alcohol content (8-9 percent) and a “malty-sweet” essence. tun customers should also expect to see Kellerbier, which Kelly describes as “a lager that is not fully lagered,” and a Farmhouse iPA. in case you are wondering what exactly the acronym iPA stands for, it means india Pale Ale. the professorial Kelly explains that during the heyday of the British empire, casked ales shipped on long sea voyages to the remotest parts of the globe — like india — required special prepa-

ration and precautions. specifically, these ales were treated with additional hops, a natural preservative and when paired with alcohol an antimicrobial agent, to ensure their continued drinkability. Kelly utilizes a variety of those hops — the female flowering plant top of the humulus lupulus species — including traditional “noble” strains native to central europe like saaz, hallertau and tettenang. From the United states, he purchases additional hops native to the Pacific northwest, like cascade and simcoe. he explains that these tend to impart a more citric flavor profile. in coordination with the annual Atlantic city Beer and Music Festival March 30-31 — dubbed the “celebration of the suds” — the tun will be offering one home brewer the opportunity of a lifetime. the winner of a competition judged during the event will be given the chance to have their beer or ale professionally brewed by Kelly on premise at the tun (last year’s winners, two members of a local organization called the Barely legal homebrewers authored Belgian tripel, a strong pale ale). clark also has something special planned, the installation of a smoker outside building, planned to make its debut on May 19. he even hopes to employ the decorative oak casks — originally used for aging rum and currently scattered throughout the restaurant — as fuel for that new device. n

s the AtlAntic city region’s first, and still only, full-scale brewpub and restaurant, the tun tavern has always managed to nicely incorporate those house-made beverages into its bill of fare. Brewmaster tim Kelly elaborates on this process, saying “i’m generally here as a resource for chefs. i’m an ingredient.” Kelly, a Marlton native with a background in physics, previously worked at Drexel University in the Department of Material sciences. he became enamored with the home-brewing movement while attending grad school at the University of Vermont, calling that time “an incredible experience.” the wry Kelly has been with the tun for five years, prior to that he also worked at cherry hill’s highly regarded Flying Fish Brewery for two years. the tun’s kitchen has undergone a transition over the last six months and is now under the direction of local chef Jon clark. An egg harbor township native, clark graduated from Atlantic cape community college’s school of culinary Arts in 2003 and has already completed stints working at two highly regarded facilities — renault Winery and the ram’s head inn. the soft-spoken 28-year-old old talked candidly with us about his plans for a menu revision, adding items like beer-based onion soup, fish and chips, barbecued ribs, pulled pork and a beer mac-n-cheese in the not-too-distant future. each would utilize Kelly’s creations, most often the tun lite, which clark fancies for cooking thanks to “a

Tourism District Master Plan Approved The CRDA board unanimously approved a 300-page document that outlines a redevelopment strategy for Atlantic City that includes short-term, mid-term and long-term goals. Mayor and City Council support the plan, which will be detailed in a public forum March 26. By Ray Schweibert

location and world-class resorts, and introduces new concepts that stimulate pedestrian foot traffic throughout the district,” says CRDA executive director John Palmieri. “We look forward to bringing all the elements together to create a new visitor experience in Atlantic City … No one expects this to be easy, but now we have a plan to provide direction.” Assisting the CRDA in fulfilling the master plan objectives is the newly created, non-profit entity Atlantic City Alliance (ACA), which has been given a $30 million marketing budget. The Atlantic City Convention and Visitors Authority (ACCVA), which had been solely in charge of marketing the city on a much smaller budget in the past, is now part of the CRDA and is supported by a membership of nearly 400 local businesses involved in the hospitality industry. The CRDA will present the master plan to the public on Monday, March 26, at noon, during a special Metropolitan Business & Citizens Association (MBCA) luncheon at Resorts’ Superstar Theater. The event will likely coincide with a new

logo and branding of Atlantic City shaping up under the direction of the ACA’s Liza Cartmell. Tickets are $40 ($50 for non-MBCA members) and are available at mbcanj.com. Reservations are required. Palmieri will be the keynote speaker of the event, dubbed “A New Day for a Great City.” The master plan addresses short-term objectives to transform the Boardwalk, Atlantic and Pacific avenues, and several cross-streets into a lively, walkable destination with shopping, entertainment, dining and nightlife venues. Mid-term objectives include the redevelopment of mid-town to create concepts such as an artists’ district and entertainment complex (including a concept conceived in the recent past called AC Live! — the fourth phase of Tanger Outlets - The Walk), invigorating Gardner’s Basin and reestablishing direct access from the Boardwalk to Gardner’s Basin, and revitalizing Kentucky Avenue with a focus on music, history and paying homage to a nightlife-and-entertainment district that made the area a tourism des-

tination within itself. Long-term objectives include the creation of a mixed-use residential and commercial area at Bader Field while continuing to use the facility for music events and festivals in the interim (thus far, five major events are scheduled to take place at Bader Field this summer, also incorporating Sandcastle Stadium). Long-term plans also call for development of new gaming and non-gaming activities in the Marina District along with a network of pedestrian and bicycle paths to connect the Marina District properties (Harrah’s, Borgata, Golden Nugget and Farley State Marina). “A successful, vibrant Atlantic City is vital to the economic growth of both the regional and state economies,” says Gov. Christie in an Associated Press article. “Exactly one year to the day of signing landmark legislation that established the Atlantic City Tourism District, we now have an ambitious, visionary road map that will transform Atlantic City and lead its comeback.” Among the key issues in the Feb. 1 meeting was a three-year, $102 million Steel Pier renovation plan. By this summer it is anticipated that the Steel Pier will offer a beer garden, several new rides and games, and spruced up building facades. Steel Pier ownership, which was in attendance during the master plan hearing, mentioned that it intends to bring back Atlantic City’s famed Diving Horse attraction, which began in the 1920s and ended in 1978 (returning for a special two-month run in summer 1993). The attraction involved specially trained horses diving into a pool of water from a 30-foot platform with girls on their back. Activist groups like PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), the Humane Society of the U.S. and the Animal Protection League of New Jersey have already begun to express their disapproval. Greater Atlantic City Chamber of Commerce president Joseph Kelly notes that the master plan is appropriately considering a mixed focus on gaming and non-gaming businesses, and the need for Atlantic City to “diversify its product” in the face of ever-increasing gaming activity elsewhere. n

ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY • february 9 - 15, 2012

TLANTIC CITY — One year to the date Gov. Chris Christie signed landmark legislation designed to revitalize Atlantic City and set the surrounding region on a new course for economic growth, the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA) adopted the Atlantic City Tourism District Master Plan in a special meeting at the A.C. Convention Center on Feb. 1. The 15 CRDA board members in attendance (two could not attend) voted their support of the plan, including Atlantic City Mayor Lorenzo Langford. An estimated 300 residents, business owners and city stakeholders attended the two-hour meeting, which was also broadcast live on WOND 1400 radio. The master plan was in the works for several months after the governor mandated that the state-run CRDA oversee the redevelopment and revitalization of what would be called the Tourism District — a 1,700acre area encompassing the casinos, the Boardwalk, shopping and dining districts and Bader Field. In addition to sprucing up existing amenities, the master plan’s goals are to increase entertainment and recreational offerings and make visitors feel safe when they visit the resort. Through a newly created Web site, RevitalizeAC.com, and four public meetings held in January, the CRDA garnered input from residents, business owners and anyone with a genuine interest in offering constructive comment. Over 1,600 people responded to the Web site’s online survey, and the CRDA hired international real-estate planner Jones Lang LaSalle, the urban planning firm Jerde Partnership, and locally based engineering and law offices to assist in putting the master plan together. It was announced during the Feb. 1 meeting that the entire master plan will be made available in PDF format on the CRDA’s main Web site (njcrda.com). “This is a landmark day for Atlantic City, and CRDA is excited to be at the helm of this redevelopment undertaking,” says CRDA board chairman James Kehoe. “This plan creates an innovative model that integrates Atlantic City’s seaside

A Grammy for Atlantic City? Stories behind the GRAMMY nominated soundtrack of HBO’s ‘Boardwalk Empire’ By Jeff Schwachter

ll of the attention and press Atlantic City has reaped from the overwhelming success of the HBO series Boardwalk Empire, the second season of which ended last December, may pay off even more after this Sunday’s GRAMMY Awards ceremony (airing live on CBS, Feb. 12, 8pm). The series, set in Prohibition-era Atlantic City, has won multiple awards since it debuted in September 2010, and its soundtrack — Boardwalk Empire: Vol. 1, Music from the HBO Original Series — released in September 2011 on Elektra Records, has been nominated for a GRAMMY for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media. As many fans of the show will tell you, the 1920s music that appears on the show — and its soundtrack — is a very important and prized part of Boardwalk Empire. There are so many talented folks behind the music on the show — including the artists of the period such as Sophie Tucker (played by Kathy Brier) and Eddie Cantor (Stephen DeRosa) who both got a big lift in their legendary careers by starting out in Atlantic City — that the show’s creator Terry Winter, executive producer Martin Scorsese and soundtrack producers Stewart Lerman, Kevin Weaver and Randall Poster are just a few of them. The soundtrack, which includes contemporary versions of 16 songs that were around in the early ‘20s, includes performances as heard in the series. Tunes sung by Leon Redbone (“Shiek of Araby”), Regina Spektor (“My Man”), Loudon Wainwright III (“Carrickfergus”) and Catherine Russell (“Crazy Blues”) are just a sampling of the tracks on the album, which also heavily features New York’s Vince Giordano and The Nighthawks backing most of the artists and performing period instrumentals. You could say there were a lot of cooks in the kitchen with regard to the show’s music, but that’s likely why it’s so extraordinary. As the riveting season one finale ended in 2010, the last song heard was a song selected by Winter himself. “Life Is a Funny Proposition After All,” penned by George M. Cohan, also closes the soundtrack. “I was just floating around on the Internet and, you know, YouTube is just an enormous resource for this type of stuff — you just type in ‘1920s music’ or anything like that and things just keep popping up. And then one thing leads to another. You’ll see Eddie Cantor and then he’s referring to George Cohan. And you just click and listen and, you know, just thank God people just upload all this stuff.” Once Winter heard the obscure Cohan song he knew it was the song to close season one. “I said, ‘God, I’d love to do a closing montage with this song,’ and it just worked great. Really poignant and incredible lyrics ... very deep in terms of its message and the words are just really powerful.” Although Cantor didn’t sing or record the

Kathy Brier as Sophie Tucker song (which actor-singer DeRosa does as Cantor on the show) as far as we know, Winter wanted him to sing it on the show. “Well, we love Stephen and we love that character and yeah, we don’t know if he ever recorded it [but] he may have very well performed it. And Stephen did such a great rendition of it. Really beautiful. “You can take those licenses and liberties and as long as it’s not anachronistic or the song wasn’t written for five more years, you know, I’ll do it.” DeRosa tells Atlantic City Weekly that his poignant performance was a last-minute decision. “I got a phone call near the end of the [first] season and they said Eddie is going to be in the final episode, and I’m like, ‘Amazing! Can’t wait.’ And then they said, ‘Terry found a song that we’re figuring out and we want you to do, but we don’t know how we want you to do it.’ “So then I get this material and I want to do it the way Eddie would have done it, and I want to do it the way it would have been done at Babette’s [club] at midnight — a kind of ‘Old Lange Syne’ kind of feeling. And at the same time, my first instinct was to go to the sad place because we had talked about that, but that’s not what the ‘20s were about and it certainly wasn’t what Eddie was about.” The song, says DeRosa, was “about irony. It was about, ‘Yeah, things are crazy and fucked up, but we are still hopeful about the future. We have to make peace with it.’ When I got that song I was like, ‘Terry, where the hell did you find this?’ And Terry said, ‘I just knew I wanted to find a song to close out season one and I just looked around and said there it was, that’s my song.’” Another stand-out song and performance

from the show is “Some of These Days,” which was one of the iconic Sophie Tucker’s biggest hits. Singer-actress Kathy Brier portrays Tucker on the show in season one, when the song first appears. As the actual Cantor recalls in his 1963 memoir As I Remember Them, “Sophie Tucker will always remain grateful to Atlantic City. It was there, 57 years ago, that for the first time in her life she received top billing, and she’s had top billing ever since. Her output of adrenaline every day could take care of all the needs of a wholesale drug firm.” Brier says that the role fit her like a glove. “Sophie Tucker and Eddie Cantor were the premier entertainers of their time period and they sang everything, really. It’s been a joy to [play] her,” she says. Brier remembers the initial audition process as being “swift and a whirlwind.” “I think the first time, I had a day to prepare the music [for the audition]. I mean, I knew who Sophie Tucker was, but I didn’t understand the scope of her reach in terms of entertainment. “So when I got the audition it was like a cram session. I knew that they wanted her to kind of be as close historically to her as possible in terms of her sound and everything, so I got the audition one day and was called back in the next. Then I recorded ‘Some of These Days’ and ‘Don’t Put a Tax on the Beautiful Girls’ the day after that. So it was like in a span of two-and-a-half days that I had to perfect those two songs.” Brier’s third song on the soundtrack (she has the most songs aside from Giordano and his band on the album) appeared in the second season’s first episode, “21.”

“The last song I sang [in May 2011, while she was pregnant], ‘After You Get What You Want (You Don’t Want It),’ I didn’t have much time before recording it either. Actually, it was originally supposed to be sung by three chorus girls and I guess for whatever reason [the producers] decided that it wasn’t working out. So they called and were like, ‘Can you come in tomorrow and do this?’ And I was like, ‘OK!’ Brier would love to do more as Sophie Tucker, saying that “she is such a character that it makes it even more fun” to play her. “When you find a character like this that fits you like a glove, it’s kind of a shame not to take it and run with it, especially when you have the backing of a show like Boardwalk Empire. So one of my goals was to create some kind of show around her, but now with the baby, that kind of flew out the window, but hopefully it will happen; I just don’t know if or when.” Like DeRosa, Brier — ironically both have appeared on episodes of Law & Order SVU — also envisions a show where the pair sing as Tucker and Cantor. “Stephen and I would love to do a show together where we just do songs [of Eddie Cantor and Sophie Tucker], and Vince said he would be willing to play with his band. We were thinking of possibly doing it at Feinstein’s [in Manhattan], because it’s just such fun music. And it’s some of the best music ever written.” Although Brier doesn’t appear on screen in season two — DeRosa only appears in one episode in the second season when he visits his pregnant friend Lucy Danziger (Paz de la Huerta) in Ocean City where a Victrola record player from Prohibition agent Nelson Van Alden (Michael Shannon) turns out to save her and her unborn child’s lives — she hopes that because Atlantic City was so important to Tucker’s career, that she’ll be back at some point on the show. “I keep hoping for season three!” she says. “But you do hear me over the opening montage [of season two’s premiere], so it was a pretty good spot even though I wasn’t [on screen]. When they called they were like, ‘You know, you’re not on camera [for the song], is that OK?’ And I said absolutely. I love the show and the music and I just love singing with the band. I mean the band is amazing.” The “band” is Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks, an 11-piece musical encyclopedia, which performs music of the 1920s and ‘30s at New York’s Sofia’s Restaurant every Monday and Tuesday (221 W. 46th Street, 212-719-5799) and which has been hailed by the New York Times as “an erupting wellspring of euphoria.” Giordano, who is represented in the Atlantic City region by Zippy Productions of Cape May, says he’s had a ball working on Boardwalk Empire and would love to bring his band to Atlantic City. No brainer, right? “Vince Giordano has the ability to write, arrange and play music from another era and essentially have our contemporary ears acknowledge this music in the realm of the intention it was written,” says Jeff Morgan of Zippy Productions. “He has a true gift.” Giordano has been so busy with Boardwalk Empire over the past few years that he has cut

hile i was recovering from surgery last month, several oscar contenders opened. here are some quick opinions on those films and what chance they might have when the oscars are handed out feb. 26. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is a film whose academy award nominations have me scratching my head. This film has earned mixed reviews on merit, directed by stephen Daldry (The Hours, The Reader), with a screenplay by eric roth, author of the criminally over praised screenplay for Forrest Gump. like Gump, this movie is a cloying collection of vignettes. it is another post-9/11 movie that doesn’t quite deliver the goods, leaving the field wide open for the definitive 9/11 movie that one hopes will arrive eventually. Beyond the confusing, hard to remember title (based on the book by the same name), Extremely Loud feels uncomfortably forced as it tells us the story of a young boy whose father (played by Tom hanks) was killed in the Twin Towers and whose grief takes the form of a quest he believes his father designed for him. with a mother (sandra Bullock) who is living in the fog of her grief, oskar shell (Thomas horn) is determined to find the lock that fits the key he found in his father’s belongings. he maps out his quest and hides it from his mother, who appears to be oblivious to the saturday trips he takes to find the answer that will somehow makes his father’s death serve a purpose. while there are nice performances from viola Davis and Jeffrey wright as two of the people oskar meets, and an oscarnominated turn by max von sydow as his grandmother’s silent tenant, the movie falls short of engaging us fully in this quest. Part of the problem is that oskar is annoying and lacks compassion for anyone but himself. while it was nice to find out that oskar’s mom wasn’t as clueless as she appeared, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is yet another disappointing attempt to wrap our collective psyche around the events of 9/11.

Streep As ‘The Iron Lady’

meryl streep earned her 17th oscar nomination playing the former prime minister of great Britain, margaret Thatcher, in The Iron Lady, directed by Phyllida lloyd (Mamma

Bullock, Horn in ‘Loud’ Mia!). This is a by-the-book-biography that is more interested in showing Thatcher as a woman suffering from dementia than as the iron-willed conservative leader of a nation for 11 years. it’s an odd choice since Thatcher remains the only female prime minister in the history of her country. we see only glimpses of that leader. instead, much of the screen time features this world leader chatting with her dead husband (Jim Broadbent). That said, streep once again shows her ability to climb inside a character. and while she has to be considered one of the frontrunners for best actress, i think viola Davis edges her out because The Help is a better movie.

A Manly Close

The film Albert Nobbs is a project very dear to glenn close’s heart since she played it on stage 30 years ago, co-wrote the screenplay and is one of the film’s producers. she is terrific in the title role as a woman who pretends to be a man in order to find work in 19th century ireland. Janet mcTeer, a fellow oscar nominee for supporting actress, is also excellent as another woman passing as a man. Beyond those performances, however, the film is a bit on the dull side. n Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close HH Directed by stephen Daldry; rated Pg13 The Iron Lady HH Directed by Phyllida lloyd; rated Pg-13
