PINKY’S CORNER

Christie, Don’t Renege on VLTs By Pinky Kravitz

G

OVERNOR CHRISTIE, PLEASE DO NOT RENEGE on your promise of no video lottery terminals (VLTs) in New Jersey. You made that promise on my radio show the day before the election and several other times when we spoke over the election process. If you had only said it once voters may have felt you were just trying to get votes, but you said it several times and many of the folks in this area took you at your word and voted for you. VLTs are an important issue to the casino industry and those of us who depend upon the industry for our livelihood. I urge you to reestablish yourself and live up to the promise that you have made to those who know the negative effect the VLTs will have on Atlantic City.

MGM and Pinnacle

The latest announcement regarding casino corporations leaving Atlantic City was made on Monday, Feb. 8, when MGM Mirage confirmed plans to sell its stake in the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in Atlantic City. A story in the Las Vegas Sun, by Steve Green, stated the following: “This is done in order to settle an investigation by New Jersey regulators into the suitability of its partner in the Chinese region of Macau. The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement found Pansy Ho to be unsuitable because of alleged organized crime ties with her father, Chinese casino operator Stanley Ho. The New Jersey agency recommended MGM Mirage disassociate itself from Pansy Ho if it wanted to continue operating in New Jersey. That could have required MGM Mirage to sell its stake in the MGM Grand Macau in the world’s largest gambling market. Nevada regulators earlier approved MGM Mirage’s arrangement with Pansy Ho. Las Vegas-based MGM Mirage could have fought the New Jersey recommendation by taking the issue to hearings before the New Jersey Casino Control Commission, but instead has decided to leave the New Jersey market. Boyd Gaming Corp. of Las Vegas, MGM Mirage’s partner in the Borgata, would be a likely buyer of its partner’s stake, but has declined comment on the issue. Regarding that issue, MGM Mirage stated in a release that it “is currently involved in constructive settlement discussions with the DGE (Division of Gaming Enforcement), which had centered on the company placing 50 percent of its ownership interest in the Borgata, and related leased land in Atlantic City, into a divestiture trust for which MGM Mirage would be the sole economic beneficiary. While no definitive settlement with the DGE has been reached, the company has asked its lenders to consent to the trust agreement. Any settlement is subject to both the DGE and Casino Control Commission (CCC) approval. “We disagree with the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement’s recommendation to the CCC concerning our Macau partner, but pursuing a settlement with the DGE presents the best course of action for our company and its shareholders, MGM Mirage chairman and CEO Jim Murren said in the statement. “We would like to put this matter behind us and move forward with comJoin us on Facebook:

facebook.com/ACWeekly

pelling growth opportunities we have in Macau. It is sad news for those of us who anticipated that MGM Mirage, which had architectural plans and a model to build a magnificent casino complex adjacent to the Borgata, would eventually become a part of the casino industry in Atlantic City. It is easy to understand MGM Mirage’s decision between Atlantic City and Macau. Hopefully, the Boyd Corporation will pick up the 50 percent owned by MGM Mirage. Pinnacle Entertainment announced last week that it is looking to sell the land it had purchased for the development of a casino-hotel complex. I learned of this news from a regular listener of my radio show. He sent me the following e-mail with his view of the announcement. “While I am expecting them to take a hit on it, it really does not matter to them since they purchased the property with insurance proceeds related to their casino boat that was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. I noted that they previously wrote down the value of the land by $160 million, but I would be extremely surprised if they could even get $160 million at this point [an article indicated Pinnacle initially bought the property for $270 million]. I thought the purchase price was $320 million, which is why it surprises me that they have completely abandoned the project. We all know it was former Pinnacle CEO Dan Lee’s vision to build it, and new management is shaking up many of the things that he was putting together while at Pinnacle. Lee at least wanted to sit on the property until the economy got better and the A.C. gaming market stabilized. They would have been able to do so since they do not have any debt obligations on the property. They are only really paying taxes on the land at this point. Regardless, I expect this land to sell for substantially less than what they paid.

Tennis Anyone?

The inaugural Caesars Tennis Classic will take place at A.C.’s historic Boardwalk Hall on Saturday, April 10, at 7:30pm. The event will consist of a legendary field of former U.S. Open champions, including Ivan Lendl, Mats Wilander, Andy Roddick, Marat Safin and others. Tickets are on sale at Ticketmaster and the Boardwalk Hall box office. Prices start at $25. Caesars will host pre- and post-tournament events including the must-see Tennis Village in the Palladium Ballroom with appearances by the tennis greats. The village will be open to the general public, free of charge, as part of Caesars Tennis Classic. Venus Williams will host the event. n

The Borgata’s two entertainment venues — the roughly 3,000-seat Event Center and 1,000-seat Music Box — were ranked among the top 100 of their respective size categories worldwide by Pollstar, the premier publication and news-source for the concert industry. The list is based on ticket sales reported to Pollstar between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31 of the past year. It was the fourth straight year both Borgata theaters made the list. “We could not be more pleased to have both of our entertainment venues on Pollstar’s lists,” says Borgata senior vice president Joe Lupo in a media release. “Over the last six years Borgata has been host to the biggest names in entertainment. We would not have been able to bring such highcaliber entertainment to Atlantic City without the help of our friends at [concert promoter] Live Nation, who have played an integral role in positioning Borgata as one of the country’s leading entertainment destinations.” In 2009, the Music Box hosted such sought-after headliners as David Cook, the Roots, Jewel, Roger Daltrey, Tracey Morgan, Chelsea Handler and Kathy Griffin. The Event Center hosted 17 of the Top 100 concert tours of 2009, including Mariah Carey, Robin Williams, Stevie Wonder, Katy Perry, John Legend, No Doubt, Depeche Mode, Blink 182, Mötley Crüe, Il Divo, New Kids on the Block, Kid Rock and (almost) Lady Gaga. — Ray Schweibert

Since late December, Atlantic City’s long promised scenic and unique event space at the top of The Pier Shops at Caesars, One Atlantic, has been open and slowly making an impact on the city. Billed as ideal for weddings with it sweeping views of the ocean, the space is already hosting events such as the Pearls for a Cause benefit, presented by Jewish Family Services on Feb. 4. The facility offers large spaces with floor to ceiling windows with views of the city’s skyline as well as the Boardwalk, and also offers a 2,500 square-foot garden terrace (presumably for less snowier times of the year). And though it just opened, more than 20 weddings have already been booked at the space, which offers full wedding planning and catering specialties. But the views still set the space apart and One Atlantic is already a jewel in the resort’s event venues. For information visit oneatlanticevents.com. — Mike Pritchard

Devil Wears Prada (seen above) opened for Killswitch Engage at the House of Blues last Friday night. Crowds braved the severe storm.

Q: How was the show? Tori Budesa Manahawkin, N.J. A: The show was a knockout! Literally for some people down in the mosh pit. But from the balcony I had a great time and a great view of the band!

Elise Branciforti Linwood, N.J. A: I’m strictly a pop song lover and even have a Britney Spears tattoo, but with ear plugs and bubble gum vodka, I had a killer-switch time! Get it? Killswitch, killer-switch..?

Brian Stokes Barnegat Light, N.J. A: Seeing two of my favorite bands on the same night is worth sliding on ice the whole way home!

CCORDING TO ONLINE SOURCES, the Saturday Evening Post is credited with popularizing the term “happy hour” after U.S. Navy men coined it as a slang expression while imbibing during breaks on the high seas. It later became a more mainstream term when bars began offering drink specials at times when people needed it most — after a tough day at the office — eventually adding discounted or complimentary appetizers or “bar bites” as a deterrent to alcohol overindulgence. During the 1980s the popularity of the happy hour (nearly always longer than a single hour) really took off, and in the Atlantic City area almost every establishment with a liquor license offers some enticement akin to one. In some cases it’s just a single day (such as Izakaya Mondays at Borgata, Two-for-Tuesdays at the Library III in EHT, or Three Olives Thursdays at the Melting Pot at A.C. Outlets – The Walk), and in most cases it’s just on weekdays or when business is typically not as brisk. Others offer a happy hour seven days a week, and some run more than one per day. Among the latter group are the Ducktown Tavern at Atlantic and Georgia avenues (11am-1pm, 4-7pm and 3-5am), the Chelsea Pub on Morris Avenue by the Tropicana (11:30am-1pm and 4-6pm), and the Bayside Tavern on Albany Avenue (11am-1pm, 4-8pm and 35am), all of which are open 24/7 in A.C. Harrah’s Resort in A.C.’s marina district recently started a property-wide happy hour from 4-7pm daily that features $5 drink specials and bar-menu specials. The Pier Shops at Caesars has something similar. Game On! sports bar’s No Shower Happy Hour is 3-7pm daily except Saturday, and includes $2 beer specials, $4 margaritas, and $5 bar bites and premium cocktails. Phillips Seafood has a $4 Happy Hour (4-7pm at the bar only) with premium cocktails, beer, wine and appetizers like crab-cake sliders, shrimp and calamari at $4 each. Trinity Irish Pub’s Half-Pint Happy Hour has $2 Irish drafts and domestic bottles and $3 mini-pub-grub deals from 4-7pm weekdays. Sonsie’s offering 15 percent off its bar menu, $5 Three Olives vodka drinks, $2 beer and $3 wine specials, and right across The Pier’s rotunda at Souzai is the Inside-Out Happy Hour (9-11pm daily, 8-11pm Sunday) featuring specials on sushi, sake and cocktails. At the Tropicana, Cuba Libre’s Late

Night Latin Happy Hour has discounted drinks and appetizers every weekday from 5-7pm, including several of its select rum cocktails for $4. Firewaters has a 4-7pm happy hour featuring $2 industry shots specials on Tuesdays, $3 Red Stripe beers and $5 Caribbean shots on Wednesdays. The Palm restaurant’s Prime Time Happy Hour is 5-7pm weekdays and includes $3.50 specials on appetizer items that would ordinarily sell for up to $12. The Borgata’s Seablue Social Hour is 5-7pm Wednesday through Sunday in the restaurant’s lounge, and includes such delicacies as ahi tuna tartare and rock shrimp lettuce cups for $6 apiece, and about a dozen types of martinis/cosmopolitans/ mojitos for $8 each. At the Chelsea Hotel in A.C., Teplitzky’s Lounge has a 4-7pm daily happy hour with $4 drink specials, $2 domestic beers, $1 off mixed drinks, half-off all items on a new appetizer menu and free parking. Happy-hour deals are by no means limited to Atlantic City. A bit north in Brigantine, St. George’s Pub on Harbor Beach Boulevard has 5-7pm daily specials with a free buffet spread on Fridays. Downbeach in Margate, Tomatoe’s does a 5-6:30pm daily happy hour and every Monday and Wednesday, from 9pmmidnight, has half-priced plates of sushi during what it dubs Rock-n-Roll Sushi. Also on Amherst Avenue, Sofia has a daily happy hour from 4-7pm with reduced drink prices, including half-priced appetizers Monday through Friday from 4-6pm and an extended happy hour (till 10pm) on “live jazz” Wednesdays. Several mainland establishments run exceptional happy-hour specials, among them JD’s Pub in the Smithville Town Center (3-6:30pm daily, with $1 domestic drafts and $2 imports during Thirsty Thursdays); the Atlantic City Country Club on Leo Fraser Drive in Northfield (half-priced draft beers, martinis and a culinary bar menu from 4-6pm); La Hacienda on S. New York Road in Galloway (beer specials and half-priced appetizers weekdays, 4-7pm); and the Crab Trap in Somers Point (Recession Buster Happy Hour 47pm, with $2 drafts, $2.50 bottled beer and $3 wines). members come and go over the years, Yes seemed to benefit from the turnover of musicians, says Squire, who will lead his band onto the stage of the Tropicana on Friday, Feb. 12. “I’d rather think the reason why Yes has been around so long is that we have, from time to time, had personnel changes,” he explains. “The incoming new members brought in new ideas and so it kind of refreshed the whole, and the whole sound.” Which is probably very important to a band that was literally making up progressive rock — or art-rock, as it was also called — as they went along. Progressive rock, as invented by Yes, tended to blend symphonic sounds with traditional rock elements. Songs were longer than typical rock tunes, and the lyrics to the songs were often abstract. Because prog-rock also relied on protracted instrumentals that often showcased a musician’s talent, it’s no surprise that many members of Yes left the band to pursue solo careers. Although Squire was renowned for his melodiclike approach to playing bass guitar, he’s only released one solo album, Fish Out of Water, in 1975. Squire has never performed any of that solo work live, but he’s hoping that will change later this year when he tours with former Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett, with whom he collaborated on a new album. “I’ve worked with a lot of people during my career, but I guess I always kept my concentration on Yes, which is probably why I only did the one solo album,” he says. Squire is often amazed at the longevity of Yes and the loyalty of its fans. When he started the band, he had no clue they’d still be working four decades later. “When the Beatles broke up, I remember thinking, ‘Boy, they had six years, it would be great if Yes could have a sixyear career,’ ” he says with a laugh. Yes performs at the Tropicana Friday at 9pm. Tickets are $35, $45, $55 and $75, available through ticketmaster.com n

HRIS SQUIRE ISN’T GETTING his hopes up just yet. But the only original member still working with the 1960s rock band Yes admits it’s probably just a matter of time before his long-running group is finally voted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The hall’s perceived bias against progressive rock bands will ease somewhat later this year when the band Genesis is inducted into the ranks of legendary artists who left their imprint on the musical landscape. “People used to ask me why we’re not in [the hall of fame], and I’d remind them that neither is Genesis, neither is Jethro Tull, neither is Emerson, Lake & Palmer,” Squire says. “It turns out there’s a whole block of prog-rock bands that have been ignored.” Not that the hall of fame would ever admit it, but Squire says the rumor that’s circulated for years is that hall co-founder Jann Wenner, the publisher of Rolling Stone magazine, isn’t a fan of progressive rock, hence the slight. “But the good news is that they’re putting Genesis in this year, so there might be hope for us,” Squire adds, with one tiny caveat. “Even though it should be the other way around.” If album and concert ticket sales were the only criteria used to pick new inductees to the hall, then Yes would have earned its place years ago. The band has sold tens of millions of copies of the 19 studio albums, nine live recordings, 15 compilation albums and 32 singles since Yes was formed in England more than 42 years ago. Its 1971 album Fragile, which contained the monster hit single “Roundabout,” was the first of the band’s seven platinum recordings. And when it came to touring in the mid1970s, Yes was among the small handful of artists who could fill 100,000-seat stadiums. If the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame decides to induct Yes, one of the dilemmas will be choosing which members get in. Squire, who’s been playing bass with the group since it was formed in 1968, says there’s been a revolving door of members over the past four decades. “Some guys left to do [solo] projects or work with other bands and some left and came back,” he says during a phone call from his Arizona home. “I guess maybe they’ll just have to induct everyone, even the new guys.” Unlike other bands that have seen

HE BORGATA WINTER OPEN managed to crown a winner Friday, Feb. 5, in its main event just as a massive snowstorm started to hit the area. Poker pro Jeff Madsen generated some heat just in the nick of time and won the main event’s $625,006 top prize. “It feels good,” Madsen tells the Borgata’s poker blog after beating Sirous Jamshidi (Broomall, Pa.) heads-up to take the title. “It takes a while for it to set in, but in a few days I’ll look back on it. It was a really good tournament.” Madsen was the tournament’s chip leader after day two and among the chip leaders throughout the tournament. Jamshidi was the chip leader going into the final day. The two ended up playing the final hands for more than an hour heads-up. Finally, with about 10 big blinds left, Jamshidi went all in for about $1.9 million in tournament chips with queen, deuce of spades. Madsen called with king of hearts, 10 of diamonds. The board came out jack of diamonds, seven of hearts, six of clubs, king of diamonds, five of clubs, giving Madsen a pair of kings and the win. Madsen, a two time bracelet winner at the WSOP now has more than $3 million in tournament cashes. “I’ve had success in the past,” Madsen says, “but it feels good to get these big wins and to continue to prove myself in the poker world.” Jamshidi collected $367,794 while third place went to pro Tom Marchese. Poker pro Matt Matros came in 10th with a $31,876 finish. It wasn’t a bad representation of pros at the $3,300 buy-in tournament that started with 766 players. Some other notables seen at the tables included Dan Shak, who just had a $1.2 million cash at the $100,000 Challenge at the 2010 Aussie Millions in Melbourne, and Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps who competed in an earlier event. In some charity news, the Atlantic Riding Center for the Handicapped will be hosting a Texas Hold‘em Poker Tournament Friday, Feb. 26, at 7pm at the E.H.T Elks Lodge, (1815 Somers Point/Mays Landing Rd. E.H.T). First prize is a $500 gift card, 2nd prize $300 gift card, 3rd and 4th Prizes are $100 gift cards. Registration is $50 before Feb.

Holiday of Romance By Whitney Ullman

L

OVE IS IN THE AIR THIS WEEK as we approach one of the most romantic days of the year, Valentine’s Day. For the majority of couples, this is the one time a year when women get treated like the princesses they are, and men get to experience a little extra romance — if you know what I mean. But seriously, this day isn’t always about love, romance and pure happiness. For those who are single and lonely, this can be one of the most dreaded days of the year. It’s almost like it’s rubbed in your face that no one is giving you one of those chalky, nasty-tasting hearts that say “Be My Valentine.” And you know what? Who wants one anyway! I say, if you are in love and you’re happy then good for you. Enjoy the day, because it is meant for lovers. And if you are single, then you know what? Enjoy the day too! You know why? Because you aren’t the only one out

Who wants one of those chalky, nasty tasting hearts anyway? there. Many people are in the same boat and it takes a lot of patience and persistence to find the right person. Believe me there is nothing wrong with that. So take that day to celebrate yourself, and I have just the right place. Some of you may have watched the reality show Tough Love on VHI with hosts Steve and Joann Ward. Maybe I shouldn’t admit this, but I love that show. I love learning about the dynamics of people, especially women, when it comes to dating. When I found out that the pair was coming to town (at various Harrah’s Entertainment properties in Atlantic City Feb. 13-14) I couldn’t wait to share that information with you. On Saturday night, Feb. 13, the Wards are going to be hosting a “Speed Dating” event at Dusk nightclub at Caesars. Then on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, they will host a “Crash Course in Love.” The latter will be a series of interactive seminars and dating games on relationships, love and finding that special someone. It will be held inside the Harrah’s Concert Venue. There will

Sound Literary Advice

On Valentine’s Day I am sure you will be receiving a sweet poem or some kind words from a loved one. But how would you like to learn about getting your great words published? It just so happens that right here in Atlantic County we have a multi-talented woman who is not only a professional poker player and a winner from Wheel of Fortune, but is also a well known literary agent and published author. Sheree Bykofsky has written, co-authored and edited more than two dozen books and she is going to share publishing secrets with you at her one-of-a-kind workshop called “Spend a Day with a Literary Agent.” You will learn many things including the difference between a query letter, a pitch and a proposal; how to locate and work with the right agent; how to craft an effective book proposal; and even the difference between placing, publishing and marketing fiction and non-fiction. You can turn your writing dreams into a reality by joining Sheree on Sunday, Feb. 21, from 10am-5pm at Megan’s, located at Boardwalk and Indiana Avenue in A.C. Lunch and refreshments will be included. Admission is $120 through Feb. 18 and $180 thereafter. E-mail her at shereebee@ aol.com, or send a check or money order payable to Sheree Bykofsky Associates, Inc., P.O. Box 706, Brigantine, NJ 08203. The first 10 paid registrants will get a free copy of Sheree’s bestselling book, The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Getting Published. See you there! n

Table for Two?

Romantic dining spots dot the Atlantic City region By Frank Gabriel

H

AS THERE EVER BEEN A WINTER where the warming sparkle of a little romance would be more welcome than the tumultuous first months of 2010? Towards that end, we offer the following in hope of helping direct Cupid’s arrows, aiming first at the taste buds and palate. Let’s begin off the beaten path in northern Atlantic county’s Joseph’s Restaurant at The Tuscany House (72 North Bremen Ave., Egg Harbor City.) Part of the Renault Winery complex, this gorgeous facility is for our money just about the closest facsimile this region offers to supping in an authentic Italian villa. Soaring archways, a tinkling piano, soft, warm tones and fresh floral arrays all conspire to create an atmosphere of pleasant escape from the harsh realities of this brutal winter. We’ve visited here on several occasions in the last year and half. Food was the real revelation, superbly executed, regional cuisine from the heart of Jersey’s pinelands. Another popular destination eatery for both locals and visitors alike is Absecon’s sprawling Ram’s Head Inn (9 West White Horse Pike.) Always respected for formal continental cuisine, The Ram’s Head has of late expanded their menu — and relaxed the dress code — to accommodate a growing, more casually oriented customer base. It’s also one of the premier venues for private events, especially weddings, we know of in southern New Jersey. If Italian is indeed the language of love, then nearby Galloway Township’s

Tre Figlio (500 West White Horse Pike, Galloway Township) whispers softly to that dreamy soul. Casual elegance is the watchword at this landmark, operated with class and graciousness by the Cordivari family. Any of the multiple, fresh pastas are always worthy, but we’d direct you to the luscious lobster ravioli for a truly sexy Valentine’s Day meal. Moving east, another restaurant whose spacious, multi-room décor seems ideally suited for private liaisons is Margate’s Sofia (9314 Amherst Ave.) With a Greek-influenced menu derived from the background of its owners, Sofia manages to include a wide diversity of items on the bill of fare. In addition, they will also be offering a Valentine’s Day weekend Sweetheart Menu at a very

reasonable $69 for two persons. What could possibly be more romantic than a place largely managed by talented women? Such is the case with Atlantic City’s Girasole (3108 Pacific Ave.) Located in a corner space on the ground floor of the Ocean Club Condominiums, Girasole is the sister business of longtime local and Philly-based clothiers Eleganza. Family-owned and operated, the restaurant —whose kitchen is collectively run by a trio of ladies, Rosalba Morici and sisters-in-law Rosario and Maria Iovino — has been a favorite of discriminating customers since opening in 1992. Should you opt to visit on a bitter cold evening, we’d encourage asking in advance for a table near their warm, welcoming wood burning oven, detailed

with artwork representative of Girasole’s Italian namesake, the sunflower. Traversing the coastline into Cape May County, a pair of restaurants have consistently delivered fine meals in settings quite conducive to affairs of the heart. The first, Sea Isle City’s earnest Irish steakhouse O’Donnell’s Pour House (3907 Landis Ave.) is a little hidden gem with an inviting, open kitchen plus boisterous pub scene. Don’t let that fool you. The culinary chops executed here are more akin to what one expects from fine dining. Fantastic fried calamari, one of the best at the shore, is plated with a tempting sweet and sour sauce. Braised lamb stew, hearty and aromatic, includes a variety of root veggies and an authentic house specialty, Colcannon potatoes, the traditional Emerald Isle preparation of mashed spuds with cabbage. On the mainland, husband and wife team Rei Prabakar and Karen Nelson continue to successfully operate their unique combination of a private home attached to an intimate gourmet restaurant. That one-of-akind venture, Karen and Rei’s (1882 Route 9, Clermont) has garnered well-deserved acclaim from publications statewide. Nelson, the chef, creates copious, seasonal dishes heavily tilting to local ingredients and flavors, served up in a sunlit, country-inn ambiance. Please note: We strongly encourage you to contact restaurants in advance to confirm days and hours of operation as well as Valentine’s specials. n E-mail Frank Gabriel at fgabriel@acweekly.com see more online @

AC Weekly’s Valentine’s Day story winner has a message for everyone By Mike Pritchard

W

H E N W E A S KE D F O R V A L E N T I N E ’ S D AY stories from readers to highlight the holiday (and to give out some pretty cool prizes along with the Trump Taj Mahal in our Valentine’s contest) we expected to hear stories ranging from the comical to the sincere and heartfelt. We weren’t disappointed. With more than 40 entries we heard about new romances, lasting romances, exciting and passionate loves and had a fair share of laughs and warm feelings of sincere affection. But in the end we’re suckers for past loves; those memories that light the corners of all our hearts. But when those past loves come back together, often after decades of life, and turn memories into a new reality, well, we get a little choked up. So our winner is James Verlander of Willingboro who got a second chance at love both literally and figuratively after his wife passed away. Verlander wins a $100 gift certificate to Il Mulino Trattoria at the Trump Taj Mahal; a bottle of Piper Heidsieck Champagne ($200); a dozen red roses from Dutch Holland with floral greens and rhinestone centers ($90); and an overnight stay at the Taj ($400). We hope that gives Verlander a Valentine’s Day that suits his “new adventure” and reminds all of us that while love may slip into the past, it never really fades away. [Editor’s Note: This entry has been modified for space and clarity.]

I failed to tell you that the first evening we met we were as excited as two teenagers on a first date, and to make matters worse, the engine in my practically new vehicle blew up. I think the engine was as excited as we were. But despite all that on Valentine’s Day, when I went to pick her up I had some beautiful roses and was anxious for a new page in my life to begin. At 66 and 70 years old, respectively, you may have thought we would settle, but we were like teenagers on their first date. There was a glow around us and it seemed as though everyone had their eyes on us. We had a lovely early dinner, after which we visited a couple of casinos to kill time while waiting for the show. We covered most of Atlantic City on that day, our day, and everywhere we went it seemed as though we were in the spotlight and all eyes were on us.

“To tell my Valentine’s Day story I have to go back in time a little. I will begin by stating that after the passing of my wife, my life was rather dull and I was slowly just existing; not really living. After about two years of being lonesome, something inside of me kept driving me to attempt to re-establish a friendship with an old girlfriend of 50 years ago. So for a period of maybe six months I made it a point to drive past this person’s home several times a week hoping to get a glimpse of her. After months of drive-bys, I finally got up enough nerve to stop by her home and place a note with my phone number on her front door. I had given up on hearing anything when about the 5th of February 2009, I received a call and that turned out to be the start of something great. We conversed and agreed to meet for dinner the following Tuesday, Feb. 10. You should keep in mind now that we were a couple meeting after not seeing each other for more than 50 years, but I think we both knew that this was the start of something. We saw each other every day that week before Valentine’s Day, but I knew I had to do something special for that day. I knew she wanted to see the Commodores who were appearing in Atlantic City, but I could not get tickets. I tried also to reserve dinner reservations, but everything was booked. Desperation caused me to make early dinner reservations, but still no show tickets. To my surprise my date managed to get tickets. She still won’t reveal how she did it, but she did.

After a great show, (we had second row seats) we continued to paint the town red, not wanting the evening to end. That day may not sound special to anyone else, but to us it was a new beginning — the new beginning of a new life; a life we had a chance to share together 50 years ago, but didn’t. As we prepare to celebrate one year of our newfound friendship and relationship, we would convey one thought to anyone who may read this. Don’t ever give up on a dream. Don’t ever think you’re too old to find love. Sometimes you’ll find that all you are looking for is something or someone from your past. Perhaps when you knew each other before you weren’t ready for each other, but now you are. My partner and I can’t wait for tomorrow to come because every day is a new adventure.” n see more online @

Rufus Wainwright Where: Borgata - The Music Box, Atlantic City When: Sunday, Feb. 14, 8pm How Much: $65

By Ed Condran

‘I love [pop-rock], I love opera, I love music.’

R

F E B R U A R Y 1 1 , 2 0 1 0 / A C W E E K LY. C O M

UFUS W AINWRIG H T ’S H EA R T broke three weeks ago when his mother, Kate McGarrigle, succumbed to cancer. Wainwright cancelled an Australian tour to be with his mother during her last days, but is back on the road performing and will visit the Borgata’s Music Box on Valentine’s Day — Sunday, Feb. 14, at 8pm. “I love to perform,” Wainwright tells Atlantic City Weekly. “It’s in my blood. That’s what people in my family have always done.” Musical tradition is all Wainwright has known ever since he was a tyke. McGarrigle was a venerable folk singer who often performed with her sister Anna. Wainwright’s father, Loudon Wainwright III, and sisters Martha Wainwright and Lucy Wainwright Roche, all sing for their supper. “I follow in that troubadour tradition,” Wainwright says. “You look at it and that’s the story of my father, my mother and my sisters. That’s just the way it is with us.” Wainwright’s opera Prima Donna will debut in London in April. In the meantime, Wainwright is back in his familiar role as singer-songwriter. “I like doing different things,” Wainwright says. “I can do more than one thing. I’m like my friend David Byrne — we like to do

40

facebook.com/ACWeekly

different things. I don’t know how recording artists do the same thing every time. I love [pop-rock], I love opera, I love music.” Wainwright is a natural born entertainer who doesn’t know how to deliver a milquetoast performance. He’s always in the moment. Each show is different from the next. “I think that’s part of the reason people come out to see me again and again,” he says. “They get a real show. There aren’t enough people giving fans a dramatic and thrilling night out. When I perform in front of a live audience, part of the fun is that it can all come crumbling down at any moment. It’s fun to see a show like that. That’s what I see when I see the Scissor Sisters or Sandra Bernhard.” The cerebral Wainwright isn’t a megastar, but much like his parents he has a strong enough fan base that he’ll have no problem being a lifelong musician. “I can’t think of anything that I love more than this,” Wainwright says. “I can’t imagine what else I would do. Fortunately I don’t have to think about that.” Leonard Cohen’s beloved “Hallelujah” has been covered by many artists, including Justin Timberlake. One of the most popular versions of the song is delivered by Wainwright though. “Leonard Cohen said he liked my ver-

sion the best out of all the versions, and that’s great since there have been a lot of versions,” Wainwright says. “That’s something I’m very proud of.” Wainwright nails the cover, but he’s an accomplished songwriter in his own right. He writes in a personal manner that almost seems as if he is communicating with his family — particularly his father — through song. “My dad did that,” Wainwright says. “He dealt with his family through song. He had a song for everyone in our family and the various situations we’ve been in. My mother did the same thing. That’s just what we do. We write, sing and perform. “You learn about us that way. It isn’t easy getting to know my father. My dad is a very complicated man; brutally honest and at the same time severely hidden, like most fathers.” One of Wainwright’s best songs, “Dinner at Eight,” was inspired by his father. “We had done a [photo] shoot with Rolling Stone and afterward I told him that he must be happy that I got him in the magazine after so many years. That set things off. He threatened to kill me. I wrote it as a type of an attack, but years later I realized that it’s a love song.” Wainwright, an openly gay performer, has suffered through drug problems, and

when he believed that he needed a stern figure to help him, he called his dad. “I thought about going to my father,” he says. “It was either my father or rehab. I needed someone to yell at me and my father is perfect for that. But I ended up in rehab. I needed help. I thought, ‘Who could help me out?’ I thought gay, songwriter, drug addict — that narrowed the field. I thought of Elton John. I’d sung with him and so I called him and he was incredible. He completely related to where I was and helped me go to where I needed to go. It was difficult. It [crystal meth] helped me escape. For gay men, all of the anxiety of sex and fears of disease go away, and you go off and just have lost weekends. But I needed to stop that and get my life together and I did it. I lived to tell the story.” Expect Wainwright to tell stories, sing pop-rock, opera and whatever else strikes his fancy for many years. “I’m very fortunate that I get to do what I love,” he says. “How many people get to do that? I don’t think many get to have such a life. But that’s been the story for me and my family. I just plan to do this for as long as I can. I can’t imagine what else I would do. I think I was made to sing and perform.” n see more online @

Romance in the Air

The A.C. region offers a host of deals and shows to make Valentine’s Day special By Michael Pritchard

I

It should be noted that several A.C. casinos offer romantic getaway packages not specifically tied to Valentine’s Day throughout the winter season. Several of the casino’s dining rooms will be offering Valentine’s Day specials as well. For instance, Sonsie, at The Pier at Caesars, is hosting a romantic for-two menu and McCormick & Schmick’s at Harrah’s Resort is offering “Valentine’s Concierge Service.” Additionally, many non-casino restaurants in and outside of Atlantic City are offering Valentine’s dinner deals. See the ads throughout this week’s paper for information.

Special Events

For room deals, the Tropicana is offering a Valentine’s Escape on Valentine’s night only. The overnight getaway experience is custom-made for two people. The package includes accommodations and two tickets to see Crocodile Rock. All hotel guests also receive a complimentary box of chocolates on Valentine’s Day. The package is priced at $249 plus taxes per couple. Visit Tropicana.net. The Borgata offers a “sip, shop and smooch” package on Feb. 14 that includes an overnight stay in a finely appointed classic room with champagne and chocolate covered strawberries. It includes a $50 credit for breakfast-in-bed, and $50 certificate to La Perla or Hugo Boss. The price is $479. The casino is also offering a singles spa package for the weekend. Visit theborgata.com. The Atlantic City Hilton offers a Valentine’s package which includes a one-night, ocean view deluxe room, a $100 gourmet dining credit (choice of Oaks or Patsy’s), chocolates and porcelain rose gift, continental breakfast for two, and spa access for two for $369. Bally’s offered a special Valentine’s package that included tickets to see Air Supply, performing Valentine’s night, but was filled up by press time. Check Ballys.com for any last-minute openings. Trump Taj Mahal’s “Do Not Disturb” Valentine’s Day Package runs from Friday to Sunday (Feb. 12-14). Putrid ‘Paris’

Travolta shoots up the City of Lights; sappy love story topples ‘Avatar’ By Lori Hoffman

T

HE COMBINATION OF SUPER Bowl weekend and a sappy but effective love story finally toppled Avatar from the top of the box office. Dear John, a love story that provides the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq as part of the background, took home more than $30.5 million to Avatar’s $22.9 million, ending James Cameron’s historic sevenweek run at the top of the box office. It was brilliant counter-programming, since the largest audience ever for the Super Bowl on Sunday subtracted more from Avatar’s till than Dear John’s. I don’t usually report on box office results, but it is hard to ignore the fact that Avatar has sunk Titanic as the biggest U.S. and international box-office hit in the history of cinema, at $2.2 billion. Now, after that commercial break, it is back to my normal job of film critic. Since John Travolta has his guns blazing all over Paris, it is my turn to shoot back at the stupidly titled From Paris with Love. This is a movie you’ll love if you think American secret agents are gun-crazy psychopaths who delight in shooting up everything that moves in Paris. bunch of French policemen have to die because Wax doesn’t want to take the time to warn them about a bomb, oh well. Remember that insane villain Travolta played in John Woo’s Broken Arrow? His Charlie Wax makes his Major Deakins look like a rank amateur when it comes to manufacturing mayhem. Besides the ugly American ambiance that makes the film unbearable, the clichés employed nearly equal Wax’s body count by the time the film thankfully ends.

filmmakers Luc Besson (he wrote the story) and Pierre Morel make a much better team when they are making purely French action films like the brilliant parkour-infused District B13. When Besson and Morel try to make their concept of an American action film in a European setting, they tend to go ballastic. Their earlier collaboration Taken is a perfect example, although the serious performance by Liam Neeson as an ex-agent searching for his kidnapped daughter gave the film more gravitas. It was still ridiculous, but Neeson gave it more emotional weight than perhaps it deserved. With his story in From Paris with Love, Besson ignores reality and common sense, creating a ludicrous plot that barely provides an excuse for John Travolta to do very bad things in Paris in the name of working for the good guys. The other good guy who gets sucked into this nasty buddy movie storyline is Jonathan Rhys Meyers. Meyers is James Reece, the personal aide to the U.S. Ambassador in Paris who moonlights as a low level C.I.A. operative. He wants to get promoted to full spy status, and his chance comes when he is assigned to drive agent Charlie Wax (Travolta) around town while he takes care of his C.I.A. assignment. That assignment appears to be killing as many drug dealers and terrorists as possible. And if, in the course of the day, a

Notebook, Message in a Bottle and Nights in Rodanthe. Joining that list is Dear John, a sappy, cliché-riddled but well made romantic drama thanks to the skill of Swedish director Lasse Halström (My Life As A Dog, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, The Cider House Rules). He manages to cut the sentimentality a little bit, although it is an uphill battle when you have lovers separated by war, followed by 9/11, followed by more time apart. Not to mention a nice slice of autism and obsessivecompulsive disorder on the side to bring on the waterworks. Look, these true-romance movies are not my cup of tea (except for the Tarantinowritten True Romance). However, show me an animal in peril and I’m bawling in the first five minutes. Confession aside, Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried are a beautiful couple and I’m glad this film managed to show the war in the Middle East without killing the box office. The twist that explains why she sends her true love the ultimate “Dear John” letter is pretty weak, but if you like heartstringtugging love stories, Dear John is all that with attractive lead performers. n
