his calendar year, 2013, marks the Year of the Snake for the Asian Lunar New Year, and Caesars Entertainment is celebrating with an array of exciting activities. Saturday, Feb. 16 (2pm), kicks off the string of events with the Lunar New Year Parade on the Boardwalk, which will march from in front of Showboat down the Boardwalk to the sixth floor Atrium in Bally’s. The annual parade will include lion and dragon dancers, marching bands, and accustomed dress performers. Following the parade, Caesars, Bally’s and Showboat will each feature unique dining and entertainment options. Bally’s Grand Ballroom will house a traditional Chinese Market Place showcasing over 25 vendor booths with food, beverages, and merchandise available for purchase from 4pm to midnight. Meanwhile, a craft fair will be held at Showboat from 3-7pm. Liu Jun and Zhang Di are set to perform at the Celebrating Year of the Snake Concert at Caesars’ Circus Maximus Theater Saturday, Feb. 16, at 10pm, and Sunday, Feb. 17, at 2am. Buddakan inside the Pier Shops at Caesars will also have specials all weekend in relation to the Lunar New Year celebration. For more information visit tzhTotalRewardsAC.com.
Following the devastating aftermath of the late October Hurricane (Superstorm) Sandy, several efforts were made to assist the many affected by the storm, which tore up the Jersey Shore, parts of New York and other areas along the East Coast. One particular standout fundraiser was the 12-12-12 Concert, held at Madison Square Garden and featuring an all-star line-up, including Bruce Springsteen, Roger Waters, Bon Jovi, Eric Clapton, the Rolling Stones and more. While the concert itself raised money for Sandy victims, sales of the album, through the Robin Hood Relief Fund, is still raising funds for those still recovering from Sandy. Great tunes for a worthy cause. — Jeff Schwachter

ypically resort venues that host live music several nights a week throughout the summer months scale back significantly during winter, or even eliminate live entertainment entirely. Golden Nugget feels the crunch like everybody else in the off-season, but opted instead to tweak the design and entertainment format of the intimate Rush Lounge with positive results, as well as bring in a slew of proven winners at least three nights per week to the rock room now known as the Live Bar (formerly The Wave during much of its Trump Marina days). This particular week that number is four nights, as the Nugget is hosting a 10-band, three-room music extravaganza called the ShoreBets Showcase on Sunday, Feb. 17, starting 7pm (details below). “I’ve been booking acts there almost since the changeover [from Trump Marina to Golden Nugget, which began in May 2011],” says Don Kreutzer, who schedules many of the acts at Rush Lounge and the Live Bar, often in conjunction with Dan Mulhern Entertainment or Anderson Entertainment Management (AEMApollo). “I’ve had a real good relationship with the original Nugget [and longtime Trump Marina] entertainment manager, Blair Harris, who is a good friend, and have a good working relationship with Kevin Scull, another friend and the [Golden Nugget] food-and-beverage director. “[Rush Lounge] was originally created to use one- to three-piece groups, and they changed it in May of last year to now accommodate five- to six-piece groups on stage Friday and Saturday [and the talented and versatile Dane Anthony band Thursdays starting 8pm],” says Kreutzer, who is also the leader of Cheers the Band that is scheduled to perform March 16 in Eden Lounge, across the street at the Nugget’s marina-district neighbor Harrah’s. “Then of course the Live Bar is more of a rock program on Saturday nights, where the crowds have been getting better and better.” Live Bar has also been packing them in Thursday nights with the B Street Band (8pm), widely considered the best Bruce Springsteen tribute group there is. On Saturday, Feb. 16 (10pm), a newly formed foursome called Alien Arcade takes the Live Bar stage, and has been hailed as a super group of sorts comprised of musicians from some of the top bands on the Philly club scene and surrounding region. “The guitar player [Jordan Demarest] and bass player [Joe Berndt] are from The Next, the drummer [Anthony Baker] is from Crystal Roxx, and the front man [Paul Mullay] is from Steamroller Picnic — they are all considered very heavy hitters on the rock/nightclub circuit in the Philadelphia area,” says Kreutzer. “Anthony Baker is the band’s manager [and coowner of AEM-Apollo with Frank Annunziata], and his father, Freddy Baker, was simply the biggest manager of cover rock groups in the Philadelphia area for many years.”
facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly
Alien Arcade
There is more to Alien Arcade than merely exceptional musicians too, as the band is striving to escalate the club-band experience with some cutting-edge technology. “We went out and invested in LED video walls and all kinds of intelligent lighting,” says Baker, “and it’s all programmed into a ‘quick track’ where all the lights are in perfect timing with everything else. It’s pretty wild. We wanted to bring in more of a concert setting to the venue rather than just coming in, playing three sets of material at a club and leaving. We wanted to play more of what’s out there — Bruno Mars, Maroon Five, Cold Play — a lot of the cool pop stuff you just heard on the Grammys without going too far out there.” Veteran rockers Seven Stone play Live Bar the following Saturday, Feb. 23, and several talented ensembles will be at Rush Lounge throughout the rest of February, among them a sensational R&B cover group called All Souled Out on Friday, Feb. 22 (10pm). “We’re in our off-season right now but the attendance at Rush has been much better than it had been previously,” says Scull. “We changed from a single, duo or trio [format] to a five-piece band three nights a week that has absolutely served to push business in that room. There’s a lot more energy in Rush Lounge now.” ■

ome actors spend a lifetime searching without success for that one break that will catapult them onto a Broadway stage. In just the last couple of years, Jackie Evancho has made a habit out of turning down such golden career opportunities. Nothing personal, said the pre-teen singing prodigy whose angelic, classical-crossover voice stunned both the audience and the judges on the 2010 season of the NBC talent showcase America’s Got Talent. She just doesn’t feel like changing the way she sings. During an October chat with public television station WQED in her hometown of Pittsburgh, Evancho said she’s not interested in the legitimate stage if it means having to sing “differently,” or in the time-honored tradition of “belting” out Broadway show tunes. That’s not the sound that brought her to the dance and propelled her to a second-place finish on AGT and also lifted her from complete anonymity to concert hall headliner in less than a year. Best of all, Evancho’s heavenly voice — AGT judge Piers Morgan wondered aloud on the show if she was 30, not 10 — “has matured a lot” in the 30 months since she first appeared on the TV series, she told the Star-Ledger of Newark last June. Home-schooled by her mother and taking classes online when she isn’t performing, Evancho, who turns 13 in April, is back on the road now touring major venues in support of her fourth album, Songs From the Silver Screen. Her road trip stops at Revel’s Ovation Hall on Saturday, Feb. 16, for a one-night stand, where she’ll become the youngest headliner ever to fly solo on the Boardwalk during the casino era. Evancho understands she must make sacrifices in order to indulge her passion for singing, and one of them is the ability to attend public junior high school while simultaneously trying to juggle an adult career. “I miss my friends in public school but it’s kind of a part of something that you have to give up,” Evancho said. “I’d rather perform than go to public school.” Ever since she began performing publicly, her parents — Mike and Lisa Evancho— have been abundantly careful to make sure their preciously talented daughter is doing what she wants to do and to make sure everyone understands Jackie is making the decisions, not her parents, managers or agents. “What I want for Jackie is what Jackie wants for Jackie,” said Mike Evancho, adding that he and his wife are constantly asking Jackie if she’s sure she really wants a career before she’s a teenager. Mike Evancho said he gets very nervous
Jackie Evancho
Evancho’s voice has matured a lot over the past 30 months. watching his daughter perform live because he realizes “the moment she walks on the stage, as a parent you lose control.” He felt far less nervous last year when his daughter made her motion picture acting debut. Typical of her career so far, she started out at the top; in her first film role, she plays Robert Redford’s daughter in the movie The Company You Keep. When Evancho isn’t on the road or in a recording studio or a Hollywood sound stage, she becomes a normal 12-year-old or about as a normal as a 12-year-old can be when they have hit albums, top-grossing concert tours and debut movie roles opposite a screen legend. Nearly three years removed from America’s Got Talent, Evancho said she and her dad still tune into the series. She considers Sharon Osbourne “really nice” and called new AGT judge Howard Stern “a great judge,” even though he didn’t pass judgment on her performances. She was too busy blowing away judge Howie Mandel, who was smitten with her talent. Evancho has enjoyed a rather busy last couple of years. Not long after winning AGT in 2010, she was singing for President Barack Obama at a Christmas tree lighting ceremony. She also performed with Broadway chanteuse and British stage goddess Sarah Brightman and Susan Boyle, the anonymous amateur singer who rocketed to international stardom after being introduced on Britain’s Got Talent. The sky is quite literally the limit for Evancho, whose career options are spreading out before her. She considers her voice a “God-given” talent and accepts her preternatural talent as a gift. She seems comfortable in her 12-year-old skin and is already looking at the future. “I can’t wait to see what’s in store for me,” she said. ■

O
nce again, greetings and salutations, and a happy Valentine’s Day to one and all. Give your sweetheart a big hug and remember, every day is Valentine’s Day when you’re with the one that you love. Enough said — but before we get to your questions, looking forward to Geator and the gang from KOOL 98.3 heading on down to the big Jersey shore/Philly reunion March 7, 8 and 9 at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood, Florida. Listen to WTKU for more details. Now let’s ask the Geator. I have two daughters, 14 and 15, who listen to you on the radio and love your show! Do you remember Hart Models? We danced on your show in Philadelphia and at Memories years ago. — Andrea Hartley, Lehigh Valley Sure do — you girls were hot and very hip! And now I know why your two daughters love the music. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. I saw the movie Winchester ’73 on TV the other day. I remember you once talked about it in this column. I thought I saw Tony Curtis in one of the scenes. Can you confirm if that was him? — Marvelous Marvin via Facebook

Yep, that was Tony Curtis playing a young soldier. At the time (1950) he was under contract to Universal as a bit player before he hit the big time. I am a “yon baby teen,” being born in the mid-1950s. I admire how you just plunged ahead in life ever since you were a young
I know why your daughters love music. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. teenager to follow your dreams. I was hoping you’d have info on your friendship with Rollye James, whom I greatly admired when she was broadcasting in this area. — John R., Philadelphia In my opinion Rollye James is one of the unsung heroes on talk radio. She is knowledgeable, feisty, speaks what’s on her mind regardless of the consequences, and truly represents the freedom that radio used to have. Who are the Sweet Inspirations, the group you said backed up Aretha on “Till You Come Back To Me”? — R. Steel, Philadelphia The original Sweet Inspirations were Cissy Houston (Whitney’s mother), and Dionne and Dee Dee Warwick, whose mom was Cissy’s sister, Lee Warwick. Later members were Doris Troy (“Just One Look”), Estelle Brown, Sylvia Shernwell and Myrna Smith. The group really added the extra soul on Aretha’s historic recordings with Atlantic. You also heard them backing up Wilson Pickett, Jerry Butler, Van Morrison on “Brown Eyed Girl,” the Bee Gees on “To Love Somebody” and also on Dusty Springfield’s album Dusty in Memphis. n

L
ouis Prima Jr. carries on the legacy of his father, Louis Prima, who was known as the original “King of Swing.” Prima Jr. brings his famous father’s music to life with his trumpet, offering up jazz and swing along with his band, The Witnesses (featuring Sarah Spiegel), that will make you want to dance in the aisles. He reminds fans of his father the only way he knows how — to jump, jive and wail. — Lori Hoffman

When the Harrah’s-sited seafood specialist McCormick & Schmick’s was purchased by Landry’s Restaurants, the first step was giving it a fresh new look. By Frank Gabriel • feedback@acweekly.com

arrah’s seafood specialist McCormick & Schmick’s — owned by Landry’s Inc., the parent company of neighboring Golden Nugget — has recently completed a major renovation of their dining area. During a phone interview, Landry’s brand manager Matt Corbin tells Atlantic City Weekly that the remodel is a spillover of that casino acquisition. “I believe the motive was that we took over the Golden Nugget [and] we didn’t want McCormick & Schmick’s to be immediately outdated,” he says, adding that the forward-thinking corporate mindset was to “get that location up to the new entire package.” The results at the restaurant were subtle, but immediate. A glass partition near the center was removed, resulting in an open, flowing room. Carpeting, chairs and tables were also replaced. Green curtains surrounding many booths were replaced by those in a warm, shimmering shade of brown. Although seating numbers weren’t altered, the effect is still one of creating additional space. The culinary emphasis remains seafood, which was the culinary direction taken during a recent dining review. As a starter, the buttermilk fried oysters brought four medium sized bivalves gently breaded, with the delicate batter providing just enough crunch and “oomph” to compliment their natural juices. Making the dish really shine was a kicky horseradish slaw, atop of which the oysters were angled. The blend appeared to be made from freshly grated root combined with traditional slaw, rather than a pre-prepared horseradish sauce as seasoning. Paired with those briny oysters, this unconventional garnish merrily danced, awakening our palate. My partner’s choice, lump crab tower,
A glass partition near the center was removed, resulting in an open, flowing room. Carpeting, chairs and tables were also replaced. brought a disc of clean, pure white meat, mounted atop consecutive layers of diced mango and avocado. Plating was vivid and colorful. Separate pools of pureed avocado and mango surrounded the crab, although a rather heavy-handed orange vinaigrette drizzled around them was one element we felt the dish might have benefited without. Otherwise, the seafood was portioned generously, the crab blend itself nearly two inches tall, and that textural pairing of crustacean alongside pastel-shaded tropical fruits proved nicely executed, with chunks of the trio comparable in size and shape. My entrée, herb crusted halibut, reiterated how simply prepared, highest-quality
fish will always remain fashionable. In case you missed it, the operative phrase was “highest quality fish.” Halibut, the world’s largest flatfish, is often mishandled by overly ambitious chefs. This rectangular cut, surgically filleted, was close to eight ounces. It mercifully wasn’t dressed up like some ostentatious weekend visitor to an AC nightclub. Instead, a beautiful, truly complimentary herbal blend was the sole adornment provided. And all it needed. As was the case for that horseradish slaw, what really tickled our fancy were the finishing touches, particularly a mash-up of green and wax beans, along with strips
of carrot cut in the shape called “baton” by French chefs. Slightly wider than a julienne, they arrived identically sized to the beans. The veggie combo — a pretty green, white and orange — were cooked until just soft, retaining natural snap and vigor. Wedges of rosemary and garlic tinged roasted potatoes completed the proceedings. What we liked best about this was symmetry — each third presented without hype or fanfare, honoring and respecting top-notch initial products. One of the bill of fare’s most expensive items is the Maine lobster mac-and-cheese, and for good reason. It arrived as the better part of an entire lobster, posed head-on in shell, atop tubular pasta, rigatoni-sized, tossed in a rich, creamy sauce. That béchamel was further amplified by addition of wild mushrooms, brie and truffle oil. Those glamorous bit players each added their own separate personalities, offering earthy perfume and a lovely, round flavor. Chunks of lobster were found in the bowl, claw and tail, for which proper extraction tools were provided. Completed via a toss of breadcrumbs on top, this hefty plate was more than we could finish and made for a fine following-day lunch. Desserts proved surprisingly profound. Upside-down apple pie, riffing on classic tarte tatin, delivered an amber wedge wider than a deck of cards. Its crust, adorned by candied walnuts, arrived ladled with warm caramel sauce and sided by a spoonful of cinnamon ice cream. My choice, the “Chocolate Bag,” brought a square shell of thick, dark chocolate, formed inside a plastic mold and piped with white chocolate mousse, fresh berries and whipped cream. Fillings consumed, we were left with a chunk of dense, cacao-laden chocolate that had served as the base for our final bites of the evening. ■

The One, the Only, the Original! Since Walt Gauta opened his first establishment in Somers Point in 1989, Walt’s Original Primo Pizza has expanded to include five locations in Atlantic and Cape May counties, each serving up slices of award-winning pizza and other tasty fare. Of course they’re best known for their delectable pies, but the extensive menu also features such favorites as strombolis, calzones, burgers, wings, subs, salads, rolls and wraps — all made with the freshest ingredients and pairing perfectly with such side orders as pizza fries, cheesy or spicy curly fries, onion rings, mozzarella sticks, poppers, chicken fingers, garlic knots or fried mushrooms. Group trays are also available for larger parties, and most locations offer take-out and delivery. Service extends beyond good food, as Walt’s Original Primo Pizza has been actively involved in such community-
minded functions as Somers Point’s Bayfest and Good Ole Days festival, the Somers Point Jazz Concert Series, local sports leagues, and several school programs like the Somers Point School District’s Foundation for Education. So while pizza may be Walt’s specialty, it is only part of what the company has become well known for. Be sure to stop by and experience all that Walt’s has to offer!
Walt’s Original Primo Pizza Locations at 35 Shore Rd. in Somers Point (927-4464); 5107 English Creek Rd. in EHT (601-9990); the Ocean City Boardwalk between 8th & 9th streets (525-0022, seasonal); and at Harrah’s (441-5056) and Bally’s (236-6470) food courts. The Problem Is Back
Unbeaten WBC lightweight champion Adrien “The Problem” Broner returns to Boardwalk Hall to face once-beaten Gavin Rees By Rob Scott • feedback@acweekly.com
S
peed, power and flamboyancy is what every observer has seen of Adrien Broner thus far in his relatively short boxing career. This past November, Atlantic City played host to Broner when he faced Antonio Demarco for Demarco’s WBC world lightweight championship at Boardwalk Hall. When the smoke all cleared, everyone in attendance left the arena satisfied — except perhaps Demarco who left a former champion, losing by eighth-round technical knockout. Known as “The Problem,” Broner, (25-0, 21 knockouts), brings his brand of boxing excitement back to Boardwalk Hall this Saturday, Feb. 16, where he looks to again bring problems to his opponent in the first defense of his newly acquired world title against Gavin Rees, 37-1-1 (18 KOs), from Newbridge, Wales, United Kingdom. Rees, who briefly held the WBA 140pound title but lost it in his first defense, made the decision to move down to the lightweight division, where he won the European

“I’m just blessed with the best of both worlds. I’ve got the speed and I’ve got power.” and British lightweight belts on the way and earned the shot at Broner’s world strap. “I was never a 140 [pound] fighter, but going down to 135 I’ve seen no titles being offered,” says Rees. “They offered the 140 so I obviously took it. I won that title [then] defended it and lost it. I liked the party life so I didn’t train [and] didn’t really like boxing at the time, so I knuckled down after I lost and I came down to 135 and I won at the next level.” When asked if he thought he could stack up against Broner’s ability, especially after seeing how easily the 23-year-old Cincinnati, Ohio, native took apart Demarco (who was considered one of the very best in the divi-
sion) Rees replied, “Yeah, of course, I’m a fighter. I’m a real fighter. I’ll go in there to fight anybody. I know he’s a great fighter [but] I’m going over there to give the fight of my life and I know it’ll be one hell of a fight. So, I’m fully confident. I’ve got a game plan, so we’ll see on the night what happens.” From Broner’s standpoint, things won’t change from his previous 25 outings. Never at a loss for words, Broner stated, “Listen, with Adrien Broner anything is possible. I don’t get hit that much. I don’t. I’m just being honest, I don’t get hit that much and my fights don’t last that long. I’m not saying that I’m coming in looking for a knockout, but I’m just blessed with the best
of both worlds. I’ve got the speed and I’ve got power in both hands, so it only takes one mistake.” A two-time and two-division world champion, Broner further stated “[On] February 16 I want Gavin, Gavin, Gavin. Like I said, I really don’t know this guy. I just want him to bring his A game because if you want to get things just right you have to bring nothing but you’re A game, so I just hope he’s ready and I hope he is in shape because it’s going to be a long night.” Ring Notes: In what was to be the cofeature for the evening, Jonathan Banks (29-1-1, 19 KOs) was to defend his NABO and WBC heavyweight belts against former champion Seth Mitchell (25-1-1, 19 KOs), but the match-up had to be postponed because of a broken thumb suffered by Banks while training. The anticipated match-up was a return of their bout that also took place in November in the very same Boardwalk Hall ring as Broner-Demarco. Banks, an underdog going into the bout, won by secondround KO, but will be out of the ring for at least six to eight weeks. At this writing, no date has been set for these two heavyweight to get back in the ring. Mitchell has since been propositioned to take place in other match-ups, most notably against upcoming heavyweight Bryan Jennings. If he does take an interim matchup, Banks has stated that he will gladly take on the winner once he has healed from his injuries. The postponement doesn’t put too much of a damper on a solid boxing card, with undercard match-ups pitting a decent super middleweight bout between tough Australian Sakio Bika (31-5-2, 21 KOs) against Serbian born Nikola Sjekloca (25-0, 7 KOs). Also Philadelphia’s own Demetrius Hopkins (322-1, 12 KOs) challenges Cayman Island native Charles Whitaker (39-13-2, 23 KOs) for his USBA junior middleweight championship, and in an interesting bout, former WBO interim lightweight champion Vincente Escobedo (26-4, 15 KOs) faces Bahamian native Edner Cherry (30-6-2, 16 KOs). The eight-bout card is brought to you by Golden Boy Promotions, R&R Promotions, and is sponsored by Caesars Atlantic City and Corona with the Broner-Rees bout being televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing beginning starting 10:30pm. Doors open at Boardwalk Hall at 5:30pm with the first bout to start at 6pm. ■ see more online @

Chevrolet and Christie finished in second and third, respectively. Ford’s problems were just beginning. The future auto magnate was relying on the winnings from the race to help pay for his bills during his stay in Cape May. Looking to make some quick cash, Ford scrambled to find a buyer for his touring car. As Russell Roberts and Richard Youmans note in their book, Down The Jersey Shore, Ford found a willing buyer in Dan Focer, an engineer on the Reading Railroad. Unfortunately, Focer was on a train that was leaving the station in the resort when Ford was trying to complete the transaction. Ford, though, was able to put his fondness for racing to good use and hand completed the sale for $400 while running alongside the train. The deal paid additional dividends for Focer, who became the owner of a Ford dealership. Ford eventually got over his disappointment with losing the race. The Model T, which made its debut three years later, changed the transportation habits and the way of life for Americans forever. It became the dominant vehicle on American roads for nearly 20 years. As for the Jersey Shore, Ford would return again under happier circumstances. In the summer of 1907, Ford vacationed with Clara, his wife, and their son Edsel in Atlantic City. Ford, then 43, was photographed turning a cartwheel on the beach near the edge of the ocean for his family. It was visual proof that he had rebounded from the disappointment he had felt in Cape May two summers earlier. n see more online @

utomotive pioneer Henry Ford relished competition, be it on a personal or professional level. Even in his 70s, he enjoyed challenging friends to footraces, often coming out on top against younger rivals. He was an avid proponent of the benefits of daily exercise. “Personally, I believe in movement. I don’t stay in one place very long,” Ford told Psychology magazine in a 1923 interview. The same philosophy applied to his motor vehicles, which led Ford to the Jersey Shore on a slightly rainy day in late August 1905. A few weeks past his 42nd birthday, the Michigan native had traveled to the beachfront in Cape May for a visit that was strictly business. Ford and three fellow car enthusiasts, including future automaker Louis Chevrolet, would compete for bragging rights by racing their cars along a stretch of sand. The novelty of the automobile, the horseless carriage, had captured the public’s attention around the world in the first decade of the 20th century. The Cape May Automobile Club sponsored races on the beach between Madison Avenue and Sewell’s Point, an area that was also known as “Poverty Beach.” The firmness of the sand made it a selling point for racing and the backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean lent a visual appeal that could not be found inland. On Aug. 25, Ford and Chevrolet would be joined by fellow racer A.L. Campbell and Walter Christie, a New Jersey native from New Milford, Bergen County. Ford had shipped his Beach Skimmer, a higher-powered version of his Model K automobile, by rail to Cape May and brought a crew to work on his car. The automaker made the Stockton Hotel his headquarters for his stay. Chevrolet, a native of Switzerland, drove a Fiat, while Campbell got behind the wheel of a Red Flyer. Christie drove a Blue Flyer. People flocked to the beach to witness the spectacle of speed on the sand. One estimate placed the crowd at 20,000. By comparison, the city’s population was listed as 2,257 in the 1900 Census. The race itself was short and dramatic, with the beach and the ocean each playing a role in the outcome. Ford jumped into the early lead, according to newspaper accounts of the race, but suffered a setback when a wave from the Atlantic struck the Beach Skimmer. Chevrolet was quick to take advantage of his rival’s misfortune and passed Ford. When Chevrolet looked back to check on the rest of the field, however, he ran into a soft spot on the sand, spoiling his chances for victory. For Ford, the Beach Skimmer turned into a Beach Bummer on this day. He finished the

What Will Cee Lo Do?
Enigmatic singer-songwriter Cee Lo Green, who visits Harrah’s Event Center on Saturday, Feb. 16, can be as charismatic as he is unconventional. By: Ed Condran • feedback@acweekly.com

Things might be a little weird for Green right now but the reality is that he puts together some great shows when the conditions are right for him. He has a great pop touch. Just check out “Forget You,” the relentlessly catchy single that pushed him into another echelon and tax bracket. Even his cover choices are stellar. Green delivers a terrific version of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’.” Who knows what he’ll do in Atlantic City? Everything that Green has touched ends up different from the rest, particularly the critically acclaimed Gnarls Barkley, the offbeat pop-rock neo-soul act, which winks at former NBA legend Charles Barkley. Gnarls Barkley is left of center but the public bought it. You don’t have to be mainstream and predictable to sell.
Once upon a time, rockers, rappers, blues artists and funk masters were out of control. Green has more in common with the shamanistic Jim Morrison than the rapper Common. He is a deep, complex dude in an era filled with sheep. “I’m bored to tears by so much of what I see today,” Public Image Lmtd. and Sex Pistols vocalist John Lydon was quoted as saying. “What is there to like right now? I know exactly what I’ll get when I go to a show. But there are a few exceptions who break the rules or make their own rules. There are a few exceptional writers and performers out there and that’s who I want to see more of. I want to see performers willing to take a risk and perhaps, most importantly, not care of what the public, critics or anyone thinks. How great it would be if

ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY • FEBRUARY 14 - 20, 2013
ou never know what you’ll get from Cee Lo Green, which is one of the many reasons he is different than most of his peers in the world of music. When Green was slated to perform at the South By Southwest Music and Media Conference three years ago, he didn’t make it and at the last minute was replaced by Janelle Monae, who can do no wrong. Just ask Grammy winner (for best new artist) Fun. Green, who will perform Saturday, Feb. 16, at Harrah’s Event Center, was booed at the Coachella festival in 2011 and at Lollapalooza that same year after hitting the stage late and performing a brief set, which he said wasn’t his fault. Not many artists get booed these days. That’s unusual and so is Green, who isn’t talking at the moment but that makes sense. A concert promoter recently accused Green of trying to swindle him out of $250,000, and he allegedly sexually assaulted a woman last summer. So it makes sense for Green to keep it quiet, but even when things are good the singer-songwriter is typically on the down-low.
someone went up on stage with their own convictions and they didn’t care about being booed. They just did what they wanted to do. There’s not enough people like that out there today.” Lydon could have been talking about a maverick like Green, who follows his own agenda. He doesn’t pay attention to anything but his craft. It’s about his albums and his concerts and nothing more — except for his gig on the NBC show The Voice. How does a guy who does just what he wants score the song of the summer of 2010, which was the smash hit “Forget You”? The tune emanated from cars, stores and is featured at ballparks. Gwyneth Paltrow covered it during a Glee performance. It’s a fun, feel-good song. “Anytime you have some success, that’s a good thing,” Green said during a 2011 interview. “You never take that for granted. You have to appreciate it. You look at a lot of recording artists and their success was so fleeting. Anytime it works out for you, you have to hold on to that time because it goes quickly.” Who can say if Green will craft another hit? All he can do is continue to make new music. It was improbable that Green would land where he did, considering his luckless childhood. While growing up in Georgia, the son of two ministers, Green had a tough path. His father died when he was two years old and his mother was paralyzed after a car accident. “Life wasn’t always so easy for me,” Green said. “I had faced some adversity when I was a kid but you have to do your best to overcome things.” It helped that his childhood friend was Andre 3000, who went on to form Outkast. The two-like minded creative minds had music on the brain. “It was good having a friend like him,” Green said. “We were on the same wavelength.” Green’s shows are an interesting amalgam of the catchy and the out there. His stage duds are typically on the unusual side and his banter is as unpredictable as his manner on stage. There is no one like Green, who can be as charismatic as anyone on the current circuit. It is probably best to catch Green at his own show as opposed to a festival. Who knows what will go down when Green hits the stage? Each of his concerts is different than the last. Green is an original, which is uncommon these days. ■

wo-time Grammy nominee Eric Prydz is a Swedish DJ and producer who has made quite a name for himself in the popular world of Electronic Dance Music (EDM). Months before his 37th birthday, Prydz’s resume looks like that of someone three times his age. Along with his Grammy nominations — he lost out to Skrillex in the Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical category for his remix of the M83 track “Midnight City” this past Sunday, Feb. 10 — Prydz makes music under an assortment of monikers (including Eric Prydz, Pryda and Cirez D.), operates several recording labels, including Pryda, and hosts a widely successful podcast called “Epic Radio.” Putting aside his long-time fear of flying, Prydz has recently relocated from Europe to Los Angeles. After a successful U.S. tour in 2012, Prydz recently announced his first U.S. residency (called “Black Dice,” which will include a slate of shows at Wynn in Las Vegas). Before that he comes to Atlantic City for an appearance at HQ Nightclub at Revel on Friday, Feb. 15. It’s a show that promises to deliver a little something different than the typical EDM show as Prydz is known to “build a mood” with his music, “controlling a crowd” without relying on the typical “easy” hit tracks and using his skills as a studio producer to create something whole and unique. Although Prydz has toured the States a few times before, this will be his first appearance in Atlantic City. He took some time to chat with AC Weekly. Some of your songs have no names, I think I read a quote from you saying: “Just listen to it and enjoy.” Song titles have never been important to me. I make so much music all the time, and obviously when I’m working on a track I have a project name for it, you need one so you can keep it organized. Tracks like —
Do you work from scraps of paper or ideas that might come to you as you’re working or traveling? Sometimes. The music I make is all based around melody and [grooves] and tension, there aren’t really words and such. But it happens sometimes where I get this melody idea in my head and I just record it on my iPhone. There are a lot of clicks and hums from me on my voice memos (laughs). Speaking of this, I have this recurring dream that I’m in a situation and I come up with this melody and it blows me and everyone else away. This is the best piece of music ever written, and I always wake up, and I can’t remember the f***ing melody (laughs).
“It happens sometimes where I get this melody idea in my head and I just record it on my iPhone.” there’s one off my recent Eric Prydz Presents Pryda album called “Agag,” which is one of the names; it was basically me just throwing my fists at the [computer] keyboard because I was upset about something and it wrote in “Agag” so that became the project name for the track, which then, because it was there for so long, when I finally got to release the track, it felt strange to call it anything else, so that’s what it was. Another time I was at IKEA and we had this new release off of one of my labels, Pryda, and my manager was calling on the phone to tell me, “Eric, we desperately need a title for this track,” and I’m standing there in the line and they have these big boxes of the small white candles, and they were called Glimmer. So I said: “Glimmer.” It
was the first thing I saw [and] that’s how it happens sometimes. I think it gets a bit pretentious sometimes when people put a little bit too much effort in the track title. “Epic Radio,” how and where do you create those podcasts? Up until now, we’ve been doing it from the road because I’ve been touring so much. I have a portable studio that I can take out in a hotel room or the tour bus or even at a club. With today’s technology it’s really easy, to be honest. So yeah, it’s all done on the road. I’m very rarely in the studio, only when I have tracks I feel need special attention, but usually I’m on the tour bus with a laptop and headphones.
Will you sometimes be inspired to start working on a track from a train ride for instance, just from seeing something out the window? Well yeah, when I was in Europe, going show to show I would use the train system there because it’s so easy to get around. You can just sit there and looking out the window you’re in the Swiss Alps and a few hours later you’re on the Spanish countryside. It’s super inspiring. A lot of the music I make on trains they are almost like a journey within themselves. I think the environment where I make music colors it a lot. Have you ever started a track and finished it on the same journey? Yes, many times. The whole thing, ready to go. It could take one or two hours, it could take 10 months. Sometimes you’re lucky and everything just comes natural. For me, I always work on maybe five to 10 tracks at the same time. I feel it’s very refreshing to work on something for maybe 15 minutes and then I switch to something else and I can come back to it with fresh ears. ■

star movies with the exception of his Oceans Eleven films. Side Effects’ milieu about the exploding pharmaceutical industry propaganda that bombards us with competing drug ads designed to make us go running to our docs for the latest super drug is the “drug war” that affects us much more than the war on illegal drugs. That said, Side Effects uses this drug war as a clever background for a tale that makes an effective red herring out of the big pharmacy plotline and fools us into expecting one sort of movie that becomes something quite different. Tatum’s role is itself a red herring, and that is all I will say on the subject. Law is the hero of the story, and the fact that our hero is happily taking money from a drug company to steer his patients into a drug trial for profit is more than a little irritating. We have to root for this guy? Well, yes, we do and that’s another neat twist in Soderbergh’s pretzel logic plot. Law pulls off the task of being a doctor with questionable scruples and Mara, best known for her role in the American version of Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, plays her passive victim nicely. Also along with the ride is Catherine Zeta-Jones downplaying her glamorous side as a psychiatrist who knows a lot more that she is willing to reveal. Director Soderbergh has declared that Side Effects will be his last theatrical feature. He says he will concentrate on TV work and perhaps direct-to-streaming formats. If he sticks to his plan, Side Effects is a not a bad way to go out on the big screen. ■

m I the only one who feels sorrier for the dog than the dog’s owner in the popular drug commercial for an antidepressive? In the happy ending the owner feels well enough to play with her pooch. What does this have to do with a movie review you ask? My guess is that director Steven Soderbergh and his screenwriter Scott Z. Burns (Contagion, Bourne Ultimatum) were inspired to create Side Effects based on their fascination/revulsion with all the drug commercials on TV. These commercials are forced to explain all the possible side effects — anti-depression drugs can make you depressed for example — leading the viewer to wonder why any sane doctor would subscribe any of these medications that sound so dangerous despite the lovely images of happy, cured people. Soderbergh has created a delightfully twisted, low-key thriller that starts out as a cautionary tale about big pharma and doctors who are beholden to drug companies to hawk their newest cure-all miracle pills, then it makes a fast cut and leaps into a completely different rabbit hole. Jude Law stars as Dr. Jonathan Banks, a psychiatrist who begins to treat Emily Taylor (Rooney Mara), the depressed wife of Martin Taylor (Channing Tatum). She has reason to be depressed since her husband just spent four years in a jail for insider trading which destroyed their life. Dr. Banks tries to help Emily with various drugs, but the Taylors continue to spin out of control dealing with mental instability and before long something happens that brings the police into the story. To explain how and why would spoil the surprise, and the lovely shift that takes place as Dr. Banks sees his own family life begin to unravel because he has been duped into becoming a pawn in a game he must now fight to win against mounting odds. Soderbergh’s films tend to create tension in environments that are tethered to real life concerns. His movies don’t feel like big
