Mummers at Boardwalk Hall Feb. 25

‘Chimes of Freedom:

The Songs of Bob Dylan’ (Amnesty Intl.)

New year’s celebrations may have already passed, but the party isn’t over yet for the Philadelphia Mummers who are coming to atlantic City to recreate the splendor of New year’s Day. In the more than century-long tradition, the Mummers have continued to enthrall crowds of fans by ringing in the New year like only they can with their glitzy costumes, intricate live music, and elaborate props strutted down the streets of brotherly Love. (The New year’s Day parade is the oldest folk parade in the nation.) In addition to their involvement in the parade, the Mummers String bands perform year-round at many different venues around the world. The annual Show of Shows, an event that brings a slice of the festivities to atlantic City, returns again this year to boardwalk Hall on Saturday, feb. 25, and features the String band association’s 16 bands including this year’s winner, and first-time champ, Woodland. Since it debuted back in the 1930s, the Show of Shows was held in Philadelphia at the old Convention Hall and later the Spectrum until its move to atlantic City seven years ago where it hoped to reach a new audience. The event also allows an extra minute or so of performance time compared to New year’s Day for each of the bands, which is a significant amount of time by Mummers’ standards. unlike previous years when there were two shows, there will only be a single performance this year at 2pm. See p. 27 for ticket information. — Daniel Aupperle

When Bob Dylan’s camp gave Amnesty International 400 songs from the 71-year-old singer-songwriter’s repertoire, those involved likely didn’t dream that the outcome could be as stellar as the just-released 4-CD set Chimes of Freedom: The Songs of Bob Dylan. With proceeds from sales of the specially priced album going to aiding AI, the organization was able to entice dozens (and dozens) of top-shelf artists — from Adele, Lucinda Williams and Ke$ha to Elvis Costello, Bad Religion and Sting — to record a Dylan tune for the cause. Sure, some of the usual suspects appear — such as “Like a Rolling Stone” (Seal & Jeff Beck) and “Blowin’ in the Wind” (Ziggy Marley) — but a majority of the songs aren’t “greatest hits” and that’s what makes this project so cool. “Abandoned Love” (Paul Rodgers w/ Nils Lofgren), “Property of Jesus” (Sinéad O’Connor), “Political World” (Carolina Chocolate Drops) and Miley Cyrus’ take on Dylan’s 1974 gem “You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go” are just a few of the many highlights inside this impressive set. —Jeff Schwachter

nowing that exceptional

ability is not always enough, and that everyone needs an occasional nudge to achieve that ultimate goal, online promotional potentate Reverbnation and the globally recognized hard Rock international have teamed up to give local musicians the chance of a lifetime. in January hundreds of musicians registered (free) to compete in a series of battle-of-the-bands competitions hosted by 87 participating hard Rock cafés around the world. the field was first narrowed by fan voting on a specially created Facebook page. Dubbed “hard Rock Rising,” the a.c. hard Rock has 12 bands/solo artists competing on four Friday nights, 9pm-1am, starting Feb. 24. Ultimately the field is whittled to three finalists worldwide, with the grand prize being an allexpense paid trip to london for the 7th annual Hard Rock Calling music festival July 13-15. the winning band/artist will be on the bill with this year’s headliner — Bruce Springsteen and the e Street Band. the runner-up and third-place winners will get $5,000 and $2,500, respectively. “From day one here at Reverb we’ve been all about the artist, and opportunities like hard Rock Rising extend that mission exponentially,” says Mike Doernberg, Reverbnation ceo and co-founder. one of the bands performing in a.c. is the south Jersey-based foursome Forsaken entity, comprised of vocalist/keyboardist lana Foster, guitarist Joey “Jt” trantas, bassist Vince Foster and drummer Dan “Mazz” Mazurek. trantas and Mazurek have performed together for years, joining the Fosters in January 2011 when the couple relocated from Michigan. “we hit it off with them right from our first practice together,” says trantas, who connected with the Fosters through the internet. “Vince and lana had a more orchestrated feel to their music and me and Mazz were from the heavier side of things, so we started to rewrite our songs to fit both styles. ... we’re looking [to the a.c. gig] as a great opportunity for exposure, which is what every band is striving for. in this industry it’s hard for local original bands to get noticed and further their careers, so an opportunity like this means a lot to us.” the northeast philly-based tried & true made the initial cut when their song “tonic & gin” was among the most downloaded on the hard Rock Facebook page. they’ll likely perform that song and other originals from a cD they produced called trials & Tribulations, but the quintet is still working on the 20-minute set list for its first-ever a.c. appearance. “we’re real excited to be playing in atlantic city,” says bassist/vocalist Joe Bojko, who’s joined by lead vocalist Ricky Sides, drummer larry iaccio, guitarist John Breslin and multiinstrumentalist Damien turchi. “You really get into the atmosphere that surrounds you [at hard Rock cafés]. we can’t wait. this gig, along with

Platinum Mustache one coming up at the wells Fargo center in June [prior to a philadelphia Soul arena football game] will be among the best shows we’ve ever performed.” the six-man south Jersey band Kid Felix will also be making its a.c. debut, and will be performing its original numbers “lost at Sea,” “Unglued,” “class action,” “Satisfaction” and “once Upon a genghis Khan.” the band includes lead vocalist Jake Falana, lead guitarist John ambrutis, rhythm guitarist Brett hagan, bassist Julian Ungerer, keyboardist Ken Baxter and drummer John Szachewicz. Solo artist priscilla paige, from levittown, pa., is a singer/songwriter/acoustic guitarist whose song “lost in the Rhythm” was the top votegetter in the initial elimination phase. one of her songs was chosen as part of the new DirectV series Gone Until December, which debuts this summer. “i’m absolutely looking forward to performing and sharing the stage with many other talented bands,” says paige. “i love performing, and have devoted most of my time into my music and getting my name out there.” also competing is the five-man band platinum Mustache — a merger of a south Jersey-based R&B/soul group fronted by vocalist aaron Bliss, and a rock/hip-hop band from harlem, new York, fronted by powda Valdez. currently based in philly, the group also includes bassist carter Fox, drummer asher Murray and lead guitarist nick Seditious. they play a fusion of rock, soul, pop, hip-hop and funk. “we are a truly unique band that has a style and sound all our own,” says Bliss. “we’re currently working with David ivory, a grammywinning producer and engineer, and just released our single ‘Situations’ on the indie label Flexitone Records.” other bands competing are alpha centura, Jae, citadel, Rachel ann, eoS, Katy Vona, and haze po. is bid to become president

of Haiti was derailed by a residency requirement before it ever got off the ground. but hip-hop artist and musician Wyclef Jean still wants to have a say in shaping the future of his birthplace two years after the impoverished caribbean nation was torn apart by a catastrophic earthquake. only now, instead of using the ballot box, he’ll do it with his voice and his music. “As far as Haiti, the next thing where i can be beneficial is if i can focus on a Wyclef Jean school of the arts,” the singer, guitarist and former member of The Fugees said. After a January 2010 earthquake laid waste to the country and killed more than a quartermillion people, Jean said the tiny nation on the island of Hispaniola was left with a “youthful” population. one of the reasons he wanted to become the president of Haiti was to help young people recover from the disaster. “i ran for president because politically i feel that when it comes to legislation and policy, [America] has a lot of weak policies towards Haiti,” said Jean, who moved to the United states from Haiti when he was nine. “We were in a situation where over 51 percent of the population is a youth population, and i felt it was important they are included in what would be the reconstruction of the country, which would be an opportunity for job creation.” Jean said one of his idols throughout his professional career has been nigerian musician and political rights activist Fela Kuti, whose life has been chronicled in the broadway play Fela!, which was nominated for 11 tony Awards last year. Just as Kuti used his music to call attention to various civil and human rights causes in Africa, Jean hopes his music can rally support for Haiti. “right now, it’s important for me to focus on the art side of what i do,” he said before a recent Atlantic city performance at the pool After dark at Harrah’s resort. After filing papers in August 2010 to run for president, the Haitian provisional electoral council rejected his bid because he didn’t live in Haiti for five years prior to the november 2010 presidential election. Jean accepted the council’s ruling. He said he supports the country’s current president, Joseph Michel Martelly, a former musician who performed under the stage name of Sweet Micky. Jean said he’d continue to remain a good will “ambassador-at-large” for Haiti and will “always do my part.” meanwhile, just hours before he took the stage at the pool, Jean was rocked by news of the death of his friend, singer Whitney Houston. “it’s one of the saddest days for me and my family,” he said. Like us:

facebook.com/ACWeekly

but he was determined to do his set and didn’t want anyone “to feel blue.” He opened his show by asking for a moment of silence, then played a track that he produced and Houston recorded as a tribute following the death of reggae singer Dennis Brown. “[Houston’s death] really hit me hard because i know what she sounds like,” he said. “i know what her comedy voice sounds like, i know what it sounds like when she’s singing in the studio, or when she’s playing around saying my name. i got a chance to be with Whitney a few times in the studio [and] outside the studio. Whenever i saw her, she was always just so warm.” Jean said it wasn’t going to be easy for him to entertain several thousand people at Harrah’s resort so soon after Houston’s death. “For us entertainers, the hardest thing is to lose one of us and then we still have to go out on stage and give it our all,” he said quietly. ever since the Fugees split and Jean launched his solo career, he’s been a fairly frequent performer in Atlantic city. much of what he knows about the town came from reading old books, and whenever he’s scheduled to perform here, he fantasizes about “being one of those real sharp jazz guys, those bebop guys. “i love Atlantic city,” he said, describing the town as “a joint.” He meant that in a positive way. “the people in Atlantic city are very sharp, and for me, as a musician, it’s a very lively place for me, it’s very creative for me,” he said. “When i perform in Atlantic city, it’s different from other places. it’s like all walks of life come to see me, and it’s very cool.” As someone who was in the forefront of hip-hop music when the Fugees were formed in the early 1990s, Jean is pleased with the way the art form has progressed over the past 20 years. people are beginning to understand that hip-hop artists aren’t mono-dimensional artists, which was one of his goals when he first began recording. “my whole thing was the elevation of production [in the studio],” he explained. “i didn’t want people to think that just because we were hip-hoppers, that we didn’t know anything about rock or about country or even about mozart. i think the upcoming [hip-hop] producers today define a lot of that. As long as long as you’re creative, there are places where the music is definitely going to keep going.” n

Most poker room managers say they start seeing a real increase in play when a jackpot climbs to $400,000. some would put it even lower, say $250,000. on the other hand, for some purists, the whole concept remains a pain. bad-beat chasers, as they are called, have a tendency to throw conventional strategy to the wind and stay with hands they’d never ordinarily play. after all, the winner of the full borgata badbeat jackpot, as it stands right now, will make about $225,000. that’s worth riding out a pair of deuces any day. Meanwhile, borgata, which is already the city’s dominant poker room, will continue to ride this wave until the big one hits and brings in a lot of players who usually play other rooms. that’s kind of the point of the bad-beat jackpot promotion in the first place. by the way, the $50,000 hit tuesday was the 100th time the borgata’s bad beat has hit, though there have been a lot more small hits than full hits. in this case, Robert addeo (Philadelphia) had quad fours, which didn’t hold up against Frank Maione (egg harbor township) and his four queens. addeo won the jackpot for $20,000 while Maione won the hand and an additional $10,000. seven remaining players at the table evenly split the remaining $20,000. Meanwhile, early reviews from the golden nugget’s big poker room grand opening promotion last weekend are pretty good. although the casino’s 20-table room opened in December, the nugget gave it a big push last weekend scheduling some special tournament action and promotions. since the golden nugget — the former trump Marina — is in the city’s marina section, it competes directly with two of the city’s most successful rooms in the borgata and harrah’s Resort. according to published reports, however, Keith Richman, the nugget’s poker room manager, says the casino isn’t looking to take on the city’s big dogs. instead, the casino is trying to create a cozy, upscale atmosphere focusing on small tournaments and intimate play. Richman told reporters “we want to be the friendliest joint in town.” one thing that the nugget hasn’t announced is a bad-beat jackpot. Might be worth looking into. n

t’s been a long while since an atlantic city bad-beat jackpot has gotten really huge and taken a run at the record jackpot of $672,000 set in June 2010. so it was pretty exciting when the borgata bad-beat jackpot blasted past $600,000 — $610,000 to be precise — this President’s Day weekend. it appears to be the first time an atlantic city jackpot has topped $600K in nearly a year. except it didn’t last. tuesday morning, the borgata’s small badbeat jackpot hit for $50,000, knocking the total jackpot down to $560,000. not that that’s chump change or anything, but it essentially shaved off the same $50K the jackpot picked up over the holiday weekend as players mobbed the casino. every table in the spacious borgata room was reportedly filled as players chased the jackpot. it’s pretty simple. the more players playing, the more money goes into the progressive bad-beat jackpot, which is fueled by a rake of cash games. it creates the bad-beat mania casinos see as their jackpot climbs. still, borgata’s unique system of splitting the jackpot between small and full hits has always stopped the casino from getting into record numbers. Under the system, any player that is beaten with a minimum hand of quad deuces to quad nines wins the small jackpot. that jackpot is about 25 percent of the total jackpot, but tops out at $50,000. in this case, the small bad beat has been at $50,000 for a couple of months. to win the full jackpot, a player must have quad 10s as the minimum. For the last month, as the total borgata badbeat jackpot has been rising above $400,000, the small bad beat has been hitting. in fact it’s hit three times since mid-January. if you put that $150,000 back onto the total jackpot, there would be a new record of more than $700,000. but, without the small bad beat, the minimum hand for that for jackpot would be ridiculously high. the borgata can only set the minimum at quad 10s because there is a small bad-beat option. so what’s it all mean? well, that it’s tough for the borgata to break bad-beat jackpot records. it’s previous record for total jackpot paid was $465,000. but while records are fun to talk about, no player currently chasing the $560,000 really cares. it’s plenty high enough.

oseph Muldoon, the 20something whiz kid chef installed at Bally’s elegant supper club the Reserve just over two years ago, will never be accused of taking his charges lightly. In fact, during a recent visit, Muldoon displayed an intensity of purpose and game face worthy of a Cold War CIA operative. he authored a sampling menu, both of current Reserve favorites and a couple experimental additions that was thoughtful, articulate and full of drama. this began with his duo of grilled meats, a bold statement for an opening course. Mine, a lollipop lamb chop, was finished with a ladling of bright green jade pesto. slightly different from the standard basil-only preparation, this one added a pleasant contrast of cilantro along with tangy ginger. okinawan mashed sweet potatoes, one of our very favorite items on this night, helped prop up the meaty, mid-rare chop for presentation. deep, dark crimson and flavored with honey, this exotic starch — imported from hawaii — proved well worth the extra trouble. the other half of our duo was a baconcrusted venison chop with grilled swiss chard, cranberry and pinot noir reduction. the meat, rich in nature and cut thicker than my lamb, had been seared to a lovely medium, chard, crisp and nutlike in taste, helped by adding a surprising level of textural complexity. three basic elements, each brilliantly displayed, formed a lobster and roasted red beet salad with frisee. Yeah, we know what you’re thinking. Virtually

The Reserve: Bally’s elegant supper club every restaurant has a beet salad on its bill of fare by now. not like this one, trust me. the poached crustacean had been just barely cooked, rendering an almost-sashimi feel. this gentle, knowing approach allowed the sweet, ample meat’s natural oceanic tones to whisper softly. A citrusy crème fraiche dressing added just the lift and heft necessary to compliment the delightfully bitter, crisp frisee. orange segments and preserved lemon were deployed as acidic garnishes for this stellar salad course. Another of the evening’s real treats, olive oil and duck fat poached filet mignon, arrived next. delivered sliced, the meat was fork-tender, rosy pink in hue. Muldoon explained that this cook-

ing technique, taking nearly six hours to accomplish at very low heat was “virtually a sous-vide,” referring to the trendy technique of slowly poaching meat in vacuum-sealed plastic bags. sherry-glazed cippolini onions, golden raisins, crushed candied walnuts and veal stock combined to formulate a sweet, lush condiment, meshing well with the yielding filet. next, a fish course brought caramelized pear-basted halibut. the cube of flatfish was tilted atop a duck confit and butternut squash risotto. Roasted yellow oyster mushrooms, fragrant with woodsy thyme, crowned the regal halibut. A simple, direct sauce of pumpkin oil and brown butter added

moisture and sheen. one of those additions, surf and turf, paired broiled buffalo rib eye with headon fresh Maine shrimp tossed in a blackberry barbeque sauce. the buffalo, perhaps nature’s most perfect protein, was appropriately served rare. It was piled high with phenomenally fresh medium shrimp tossed in a sweet/ spicy/fruity mixture, which Muldoon labeled “a sort of take on mole.” We loved the chef’s decision to leave the shrimp heads — and all their inherent liquid — intact for us to enjoy. More of that crunchy chard and a toss of ariel (baby bell peppers) finished off this ambitious entrée. Closing our meal on a light, elegant note, Muldoon presented a velvety blueberry soup. We greatly admired this dual use of berries, black and savory with the prior plating, then blue and sweet for dessert. he told us this soup will definitely be added to the dessert list over the course of the next few months, as local Jersey blueberries begin to come back into season. the refined blend, strained until smooth, was augmented by a spoonful of house-made limoncello sorbet plus a swirl of crème anglaise. Muldoon went on to inform us of some exciting news as well. Acclaimed harrah’s pastry chef deborah pellegrino will begin providing the Reserve with her world-class dessert creations in the very near future. Which should only serve to elevate one of Atlantic City’s true hidden culinary treasures even further. n

Neil Moffitt on Revel and Atlantic City Angel Management Group has redefined Las Vegas nightlife, now it’s getting into the A.C. action. By Jeff Schwachter

What was your initial reaction to Atlantic City when you first came? i think that it’s more that we’ve been looking at the project that we’re working on specifically and i felt that Revel, the standalone project, [is] a game-changer for that market. i think that similarly to how people look to las Vegas when the Mirage was built, i think that, you know, it steps into a new realm and i believe is going to bring a lot of new people to the market. obviously we’re a las Vegas company so i compare the two and i think it has the opportunity to really find Atlantic City because when i first went there, it was a little bit of a culture shock coming from las Vegas, as you can imagine. But then when i actually spent some time there and spent some time in competitors’ casinos, i was pleasantly surprised and i feel that being involved in Revel is a very exciting piece of history for Atlantic City and i think will change how people look and perceive the market. Do you see the potential in Atlantic City to become a nightlife mecca ala Vegas? Well, i don’t think Vegas redefined the wheel. i think that what happened with Vegas was that, you know, a whole new audience and demographic started attending las Vegas. People forget that 10 years ago there was very little nightlife in this market and that has changed significantly and has now probably become the nightlife, food and beverage center of the world really. People come from all over the world now to get inspiration from las Vegas. We have some of the most powerful nightlife companies here and probably the most powerful offerings here and now you get people from Dubai and Asia and europe coming here to get inspiration. Do you anticipate Revel attracting people from beyond the immediate region? i think that other people or other competitors in the Atlantic City market sort of dipped their toe in the water to bring people from other east Like us:

eil Moffitt’s Angel MAnAgeMent group has become one of the biggest success stories in the entertainment and business world. the United Kingdom-born Moffitt, who is the company’s Ceo and founder, has been working in the entertainment industry since the early 1990s. since then he has accomplished more than most people could in several lifetimes. the man who UK’s Billboard magazine named one of the “top five most influential people in British music,” and who has turned the las Vegas strip’s nightlife scene into the extraordinary success it is today, has been paying visits to Atlantic City — he has projects cooking all over the world — over the past year or so. Why? Because Revel Ceo Kevin Desanctis wanted Moffitt’s Angel Management group to be a big part of the resort complex, which is slated to open this spring. Moffitt, who says he hopes to open all of AMg’s venues inside Revel at the same time, “slightly later” than April 2, spoke to Atlantic City Weekly from las Vegas during a recent phone call. (See more from this interview at acweekly.com)

Angel Management Group founder and CEO Neil Moffitt Coast markets to Atlantic City and they had that market for a little while i think. ... everything about Revel — if you took Revel and put it in the middle of the [las Vegas] strip and said, ‘oK, how well are you going to do to?’ — it would compete with, you know, the monsters that sit on the strip. it would complete with Wynn, it would compete with the Bellagio, it would compete with CityCenter and Cosmo on a level playing field. so what i think Revel has done is, they’ve really given people the choice. Do you want to sit on a plane for six hours and fly to las Vegas for two nights or would you just want to go down the road and have the same experience? i think from what i have seen in the market, unless i’ve missed something, Revel has really given the customer the choice [and] i think that’s where they stand out from everybody else; they have delivered a facility that within contains that true resort las Vegas feeling, and i think that can only direct people out of their homes. And people will judge the product when they get there and see it and try it. But i think, along with everybody else that’s involved in the project, i think that people are very confident that people will see it as a true alternative and the market leader in the northeast. Have you ever been approached about other projects or different projects in the Northeast and what made Atlantic City and Revel specifically so attractive for you to finally pull the trigger? We have been approached to do things in the northeast [United states] and we didn’t find anything that was attractive to us. And what attracted me to Revel was the project itself. i feel that Kevin Desanctis is probably one of the most highly-respected people in gaming and i believe that he understands what’s required to be a market leader. i mean the guy opened the Mirage so he’s been at that cutting edge before. i think he

understood the northeast and he understood that he wasn’t just trying to manage the customer base that already exists. Desanctis was being very ambitious in reaching out to a whole new audience and creating a product that’s never been seen before and i believe in Kevin and i believe in Revel and therefore i believe that we’re going to be greatly successful. And i also felt that they have a true las Vegas mentality by trying not to just put a Band-Aid on something. they’ve master planned the whole project and brought some very good operators in as partners and everybody is pushing in the same direction and it’s not only just great nightlife there, you know, there’s fantastic restauranteurs who are going in there. so i think the ingredients are something that we would have been foolish to turn down. You talked about having the vibe of Vegas in Revel. What are some of those characteristics for people who have never experienced Vegas before? Well, if you take similarities, the way that they’ve designed the casino, you know, the casino is designed for nonstop action. the one thing that i felt was lacking in Atlantic City was, you know it was weird to me — it was extremely busy at 10pm and completely empty at 2am. the restaurants were all closed. the nightclubs are only open two nights a week. Yet the casino floor seemed relatively busy. i never understood that. i think that what was [the Revel] vision — 24/7 action, whether it be a huge concert in the concert hall, which is probably one of the most amazing halls i’ve been in a long time, whether it be a party going on at the beach, whether it be a nightclub, whether it be the late-night restaurant offerings, whether it be a burlesque show, it’s just rather, you know, there’s a lot of razzmatazz in that hotel. there’s a lot of sizzle and there’s a lot of 24/7 going to be going on there, whether it be during the day or during the night. they’re look-

ing to offer entertainment 24 hours a day and i don’t see any of their competitors in the market doing the same at this point in time. Maybe they’ll change and evolve, but at this point in time i think Revel are the only people out there that are going to deliver that and that’s the same thing we can get at Vegas. Vegas is a Disneyland for adults. i think that Revel is on a par with all of them here, so it’s an exciting time for the city. You operate 15 nightlife properties in Vegas. How many properties will AMG operate in Revel? We are keeping that under the hat at the moment, but we have several offerings in Revel that we will be operating and not only will we be operating those venues, we are also looking to do various large-scale events in and around the hotel. The Atlantic Ocean is quite an asset for Revel as well. What are your thoughts on having the ocean rather than the desert as an environment to work in? It’s quite a different canvas. Yes, i think that i remember Kevin telling me that when they designed the hotel, the whole idea of the design of the hotel was that you were to enter a resort and forget where you are. everything focuses on the ocean. there’s no view of Atlantic City or any surrounding areas. everything focuses toward the ocean. Why wouldn’t you do that? it’s really the shot, right? i was there last summer and the sun was shining and i was walking around and i remember just looking out the window and what he predicted was true — you just become lost, as in lost in where you are. they were very clever with the architecture; it’s very timeless and when you’re in there it’s very timeless. taking that view as your centerpiece, money can’t buy that view, and the way that they designed it with the elevated casino floor, it’s beautiful. so yes, it’s very different than looking out at the dirt. In relation to your Vegas club Godskitchen, and the nightlife scene that has emerged over the past decade with DJs being the stars of the show, will that theme prevail in your venues inside Revel? i think that, obviously, my beginnings were in the [DJ] genre of music, so therefore i’m pretty knowledgeable of it and have a really good understanding of that music. Right now at this moment in time it seems to be on a crest of a wave in the United states and it’s something that we may capitalize on, but we don’t fundamentally build our business off of the back of one genre of music. ... i think what we try and do is cover all spectrums of entertainment whether it be celebrity driven, whether it be a, you know, Rihanna or Puffy or a Jennifer lopez, or whether it be a David guetta or tiesto or swedish House Mafia. We try and program our venues to make more than one demographic happy and not just go down one route, which is hot today and gone tomorrow. We’re a little bit more diverse than most, because i always want to try and be ‘what’s going to be the new hot thing?’ What’s hot today is old news tomorrow. n

When an overflow crowd paid homage to brock during funeral services a few days later, one reverend called the late educator a “moral and intellectual giant.” timing is a tricky taskmaster — it took abraham Lincoln years to shape his antislavery stance. Integration of atlantic city schools, district-wide, would have to wait for a few decades after the “delegation” marched into mayor bader’s office. the antithesis of a firebrand, John robert paul brock had a keen eye for community welfare. the bank that he established and helped make solvent was the Great bay building and Loan association. In today’s parched lending/mortgage climate, we could use an institution like that. n

Well, obviously we’ve got a lot of friends in Philadelphia, in Jersey and new York, you know, d.c. and baltimore and that whole area, so we knew we wanted the event to be on the east coast. and we knew we wanted this event to be kind of central to that northeastern pocket up where you guys are. a lot of the things we do, we kind of look at it as we have so many friends in europe and canada and all over the States and you guys are kind of in the middle, so if you’re coming over from europe you can fly into Philadelphia, you can fly into new York. if people want to come down from toronto and Montreal and Quebec and such it’s not too far. [atlantic city’s] location was really central. ... [We] thought it would be good to be close to infrastructure so the fans do have the backbone of a place like atlantic city at their disposal. An old-school Metallica fan maybe wouldn’t expect to see you tour with bands like Gaslight Anthem and Modest Mouse. What made you go in that direction since the line-up is not typically what we would expect? We’ve been playing festivals in europe since basically the mid-’80s and so most of these festivals [have] really, really varied line-ups on it. ...the first festival we ever played was in europe in 1986. eric clapton and Phil collins were [among] the three headline bands so it’s always been about variety and it’s always been about diversity and kind of a musical experience that

other stuff and we’re still trying to figure all of that out because we [have] a very vivid imagination, but we also want to make sure it’s not too over the top. You know like: “Go and surf with kirk after rob trujillo in a giant wave pool!” We’ll take it one step at a time, but it’s going to be a bunch of really fun stuff.

Can we really expect to hear ride the lightning in its entirety? Well, that’s certainly what’s planned. We’ve played seven of those eight songs so i think the odds of it happening in the entirely are pretty good. the eighth song that we haven’t played is not because it’s too difficult to play so i think that the chances of all eight songs happening are pretty strong. there’s a lot that can happen between now and June 23, but we’ll see what happens. i say the odds are pretty good.

couple of days we start frantically trying to figure it all out, you know, and i think that kind of energy is always more fun when it’s a little more compulsive and a little more spontaneous and a little more momentary. ... i’m sure there will be plenty of special moments. there will certainly be special people there and usually in the wake of special people follow special moments.

Could Orion become an annual event? if enough people show up and enough people give a shit and enough people have a good time then obviously we would love to do it every year. these types of things have a tendency to take a few years to get off the ground, you know, and with anything you go out there, you have fun with it, you do the best you can, and then you do better the second year. i think it looks promising. We’ve got a lot cool bands, a lot of cool lifestyle things we’re gonna do and i think it should have the potential to be something that happens every year.

The Orion Festival is said to feature a lifestyle element. Could you tell us more about that? People that know about the members of Metallica kind of know our passions. We’re very into different members going to different things, but obviously if i say people are into cars or people are into surfing or people are into films or art or whatever, i mean, the idea is that there’s kind of an element to Metallica members that we’ll share. it’s a different experience so you can go in and kind of experience

How’s your tennis game these days? My game is not good enough! What we should do is put a tennis court on this festival and maybe some people can go over and give me some tennis lessons. i don’t play as much as i should, but i definitely try to and i try to do as much as i can. it just doesn’t quite work out, but i’ll bring my tennis racket to atlantic city and if anybody wants to hit some balls they can find me behind the third empty hangar over there. n

Lars Ulrich: Atlantic City fest is ‘about variety.’ offers a different kind of thing for the fans, where it becomes kind of that people of all different ilks and passions kind of get together and experience lots of stuff that’s different. ... that was kind of the spirit of what we wanted to do, that type of thing together instead of you know, here’s Metallica with, you know, nine hardcore norwegian metal bands, which may be cool in a different scenario, but this type of thing we wanted to do was more about variety and giving people a sense of discovery — where people might walk away and think something’s really cool. Recently, you have taken the stage with guests; could the Atlantic City crowd expect any surprises to show up at the June festival? i would hope so. i mean, listen, these types of things are things we kind of have the tendency to do by the seat of our pants. it’s February and we’re four months away so probably the last

How difficult is it to juggle all of your musical obligations? it’s not easy. guns tends to book a lot of things fairly last minute. i’ll have solo stuff booked and i’ll have to cancel it.

One album in 14 years isn’t much of an output. Any chance that Guns N’ Roses will put out anything since Chinese Democracy finally was released? i really hope so. i would like to put out more than one album in 14 years. But people don’t know how much trouble we had with interscope [Records]. they didn’t make it easy on us. But there’s a good chance something will be out. We’re writing and axl really likes some of the stuff [guitarist] DJ [ashba] has come up with. guns has a future and i think it includes an album. i’m fine with playing the old guns songs i had nothing to do with when they were recorded. The long and winding show: Axl & Co. live

‘I think there is a much better chance that there will be another Guns N’ Roses album than there will ever be a Replacements reunion.’ PHoto: Steven CoHen

not at all. We just walked away from i’m all about Chinese Democracy, too, but it. i want new guns n’ Roses songs. What’s Axl Rose really like? First of all, axl Rose is part of a dying breed, a real rock star. there just aren’t rock stars anymore. He’s a really good guy, great to work with. if that wasn’t so i wouldn’t be working with him for the last 14 years. When we last spoke a decade ago, you told me that there was an 80-percent chance that the Replacements would never reunite and if you did, it would be only for the money. Is that still true? [Laughs] i think it’s less than a 20-percent chance we’ll get back together. i think there is a much better chance that there will be another guns n’ Roses album than there will ever be a Replacements reunion.

What if Coachella offered the Replacements $5 million, which they dangled in front of the Smiths, to reunite? We would have to consider it. i don’t know if we’d do it. But it’s not like we’re on bad terms. every couple of years we talk about what it would take for us to come back, but we’re not doing it. Music culture has chanced a great deal since you were with the Replacements. It appears that most fledgling artists are desperate for wealth and fame and the Replacements were the antithesis of that. i would agree with that.

brass ring, I don’t know what does. yeah, we didn’t go for the brass ring, but we didn’t think it was reachable anyway. I always thought I missed the mythic great Replacements show since the Mats were often a drunken mass, which angrily stopped midway through songs. But I realized years after you called it a day that those were the great shows since each show was different. It was happening in front of everyone. We were genuine and Paul is like no one else. it was great to be in a band with him. When Chinese Democracy was just some Flying Dutchman of a project, did your old pal Westerberg ever call you to see what was going on? He called and joked and said, “maybe i should produce the album.” He didn’t. He won’t produce the next guns album either. i’m looking forward to the next album. it’s a good time to be in guns n’ Roses.

You’re squeezing in a date at Philly’s MilkBoy following the Atlantic City Guns N’ Roses date. [Wednesday, Feb. 29, at MilkBoy, 1100 Chestnut St., Philadelphia. $10; 9pm.] yes. i’m really looking forward to It’s all over the Mats lyrics, such as “I that. i’m only going to be on for about Don’t Know.” You could almost see Paul 35 minutes. it’s a Pete Donnelly [nRBQ, Westerberg sneering as he sings: “one foot Figgs, Soul asylum, graham Parker] in the door/ the other one in the gutter/the show and it’ll be fun. i just don’t know But it’s not as if you had an ugly break- sweet smell that you adore/I think I’d rather exactly what i’ll do yet. i’m just glad i smother.” If that doesn’t say I’ll pass on the have the chance to do it. n up.

Is there a backup for you with Guns N’ Roses? i’m not going to miss anything with guns since it’s been my main gig for the last 14 years, but if i had to miss, the person i could call is [original guns n’ Roses bassist] Duff [mckagan]. He would do it and the old fans would get a kick out of it. But i’m good with all the guns dates.

Guns N’ Roses

Guns N’ Roses to rock Atlantic City Feb. 24 at House of Blues. Bassist Tommy Stinson talks new GNR album, his old band the Replacements and what Axl Rose is really like.

ommy StinSon iS aSking Some questions about the fashionable Paleo diet since he’s hoping for some extra energy. that’s understandable since the guns n’ Roses bassist is working around the clock. When the former member of the seminal 1980s alt-rockers the Replacements isn’t on the road with guns n’ Roses, Stinson is working on solo material or touring with Soul asylum. at the moment he is caring for his four-year old, who has walking pneumonia. “there is so little time for everything,” Stinson tells Atlantic City Weekly while calling from his home in new york’s Hudson Valley. “i need more energy.” the busy performer talks about axl Rose, the future of guns n’ Roses — which just finished off a five-night new york City run and will perform Friday, Feb. 24, at the House of Blues in atlantic City — and why a Replacements reunion is unlikely.

his year’s Oscar shOwdOwn Best Actress

is about the roots of filmmaking history from its very beginnings — Martin scorsese’s Hugo — to the stylish era of 1920s silent movies (The Artist). Hugo will likely win minor Oscars, while The Artist and The Descendants will be battling it out for the biggest prizes on Oscar night. after adding five movies to the best picture category two years ago, then deciding that 10 might be too many, there is now a complicated mathematical formula to determine the amount of nominees. This year there are nine films up for best picture. here are my predictions and preferences for the major categories, plus my quick picks for the rest of the awards. The academy awards will be broadcast on sunday, Feb. 26, 8pm, on aBc with popular Oscar host Billy crystal back in charge of keeping the show lively.

o Glenn close Albert Nobbs o Viola davis, The Help o rooney Mara, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo o Meryl streep, The Iron Lady o Michelle williams, My Week With Marilyn

Best Supporting Actor o Kenneth Branagh, My Week With Marilyn o Jonah hill, Moneyball o christopher Plummer, Beginners o nick nolte, Warriors o Max von sydow, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close Prediction: Christopher Plummer Preference: christopher Plummer — This is a mortal lock, with the much respected Plummer killing it in a showy role of a man who finds out he is dying and comes out as gay to his son. Veteran nolte also has a lot of support, but not enough to topple Plummer.

Prediction: Michel Hazanavicius Preference: alexander Payne — hazanavicius won the directors Guild award, which pretty much locks up the Oscar victory, although there is still a slight chance that Payne pulls off the upset.

Best Supporting Actress o Bérénice Bejo, The Artist o Jessica chastain, The Help o Melissa Mccarthy, Bridesmaids o Janet McTeer, Albert Nobbs o Octavia spencer, The Help Prediction: Octavia Spencer Preference: Octavia spencer — spencer has been doing small roles for years but when a breakout role came along, she was marvelous as the southern maid with attitude in The Help. it would be a total shock if anyone else won. Best Actor o demián Bichir, A Better Life o George clooney, The Descendants o Jean dujardin, The Artist o Gary Oldman, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy o Brad Pitt, Moneyball Prediction: George Clooney Preference: George clooney — clooney might never be better as a husband and father in crisis in alexander Payne’s superb dramedy. however, there has been a late rush of support for The Artist and the touching and funny performance by Jean dujardin. This category will be a suspenseful highlight of Oscar night. Like us:

facebook.com/ACWeekly

Prediction: Viola Davis Preference: Viola davis — normally one might predict that streep is due since she hasn’t won since 1983 despite her record-shattering 17 acting nominations, but davis’ saG win suggests she is still the frontrunner. as an aside, the only performer nominated two years in a row in any acting category is Michelle williams. Best Director o Michel hazanavicius, The Artist o alexander Payne, The Descendants o Martin scorsese, Hugo o woody allen, Midnight in Paris o Terrence Malick, The Tree of Life

Best Motion Picture o The Artist o The Decendants o Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close o The Help o Hugo o Midnight in Paris o Moneyball o The Tree of Life o War Horse Prediction: The Artist Preference: The Descendants — i loved both these movies but give the edge to The Descendants for the emotional connections as well as a witty screenplay and brilliant performances. however, if The Artist wins, and the buzz is pointing in that direction, i will be satisfied that an excellent film has taken home the prize. Hugo has the most nominations, but will only win for some of the lesser categories. Everything Else here are my choices for the rest of the awards: adapted screenplay, The Descendants; original screenplay, The Artist; animated feature, Rango; art direction, The Artist; cinematography, Hugo; costume design, Jane Eyre; documentary feature, Pina; documentary short, Incident in New Baghdad; film editing, The Artist; foreign language film, A Separation (iran); makeup, Albert Nobbs; original film score, The Artist; original song, “Man or Muppet” from The Muppets; animated short, La Luna; live action short, Time Freak; sound editing, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo; sound mixing, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo; visual effects, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. n
