ALBUM WEEK of the

Atlantic City Antiques Show @ the Taj by Ray Schweibert

I

t’s back — bigger and better than ever, March 8-9. Thousands of casual shoppers and serious collectors will be attending the Atlantic City Antiques Show at the Trump Taj Mahal’s Etess Arena in what is being billed as one of the nation’s most exciting antiques events of the year. The Atlantic City Boardwalk has stood as a symbol of the rich history and culture of America for over a century, and there is perhaps no better place to showcase much of the history and heritage of not only of the country, but the world. Over 200 exceptional antiques dealers will be exhibiting at the show. Upon first entering the Etess Arena, guests will be greeted by a special world-class exhibit of antique toys presented by Bertoia Auctions. This exhibit is being personally curated by Jeanne Bertoia, former president of the Antique Toy Collectors Club of America and one of the country’s foremost authorities on antique toys. She will offer a once-ina-lifetime opportunity for guests see the rarest and most valuable antique toys still in existence today. Attendees will also be drawn to the expansive galleries showcasing the finest antique furniture, fine art, crystal and jeweled perfume bottles, antique pottery, historic-to-contemporary decorative works, and more. Show hours are Saturday, March 8, from 10am-6pm (early buying available Sat., 9-10am), and Sunday, March 9, from 11am-5pm. Call 973927-2794 or visit jmkshows.com for more.

t may be too cold to don your Daisy Dukes, but Dukes of Hazzard fans and classic car enthusiasts will have a chance to sit in the 1969 Dodge Charger made famous from the iconic 1980s TV show as the General Lee car will be parked in The Chelsea hotel lobby from Friday, Feb. 28 (from 1pm) through Sunday, March 2 (at 8:30am). The car will be roped off, but folks will be able to take photos of it. In addition, for $15 you can have your picture in the General Lee taken on your camera or phone from 5-7pm on Friday and Saturday night. There is a $5 discount for all Chelsea guests. Although this particular General Lee car did not appear in any of the Dukes of Hazzard TV episodes, it has been signed by all of the TV series’ surviving cast, as well as some of the stunt team members and members of the H&H body shop crew that did all the paint and bodywork in the first five episodes of the show, which were filmed in Georgia. It also has the correct color paint from the TV series as well as correct pushbar, CB radio, antenna and interior color, and has been used in personal appearances by members of the cast. As part of this General Lee AC event at The Chelsea, participants can enjoy 10 percent off dinner at the posh hotel’s Dining on the Fifth (excludes alcohol, tax, and gratuity and cannot be combined with other promotions).

Neneh Cherry ‘Blank Project’ (Smalltown Supersound) Following The Cherry Project,, her phenomenal 2012 collaboration with a Scandinavian saxophone trio, Neneh Cherry (stepdaughter of late jazzman Don Cherry, and of 1980s hit “Buffalo Stance” fame) is back with her first solo album in more than 15 years, Blank Project. The soonto-turn 50 year old may have called the album as such because it’s so hard to define. Electronica, jazz, spoken word, hip-hop, R&B and avant-garde fuse together on an album of personal and uncensored subject matter, yet full of hooks and catchy rhythms. Cherry hasn’t lost any of the grit or glory that has made her one of the most remarkable and interesting artists on the planet. Her lyrics, stark and confessional, blend perfectly with her unusual vocals, which are equally inspired by Billie Holiday and rap stylings. The title track is a catchy, drum-heavy cut, with Cherry spitting out lyrics like a master rapper. The production (courtesy of electronica’s Four Tet) is stellar and the instrumentation (Cherry is backed by British space-jazz duo RocketNumberNine) is extraordinary. Swedish pop singer Robyn appears on the crunchy “Out of the Black,” which features some nasty distorted synths, while the seven-minute-plus closer “Everything” feels like a Prince outtake (one of his many good ones). As Cherry sings the song’s hook “good things come to those who wait,” the album closes with a couple reminders: that in this hyperspeed age of Twitter, there is still room for patience, even if it takes 16 years between records; and that an album is still the true currency of the singer-songwriter (rather than a spattering of quickly released singles) even if you have to carve out an hour of time to listen to it. Cherry’s Blank Project certainly deserves your time. — Jeff Schwachter

Alcove a Go Go at Boogie Nights @ the Trop By Ray Schweibert

C

ome party for a good cause, as the third annual Alcove a Go Go returns to Tropicana’s Boogie Nights nightclub on Friday, March 7, from 6:30-9:30pm. All proceeds benefit The Alcove Center for Grieving Children and Families, located at 376 Tilton Road in Northfield. The night will include a silent auction, gifts, raffles, a cash bar, food and, of course, lots of dancing to your favorite hits. Prizes will be awarded for best disco attire. KOOL 98.3 FM will be broadcasting the festivities live. Tickets are $75 per person, $240 for four tickets or $500 for 10 tickets. Go to thealcove.org or call 484-1133. The Alcove Center for Grieving Children and families provides bereavement support services for the Southern New Jersey area. Following the death of a loved one, many times the surviving adult is overwhelmed with grief, making it difficult to provide sufficient support to help their child(ren) deal with the death. This often leaves the child to face their loss and pain alone. The Alcove provides peer support groups for children ages 3 to 18, and adult-group support for their surviving parent, grandparent or guardian. see more online @

The Beer Buzz By Ray Schweibert • feeback@acweekly.com

A

tlantic City Country Club has epitomized the rich history of the South Jersey seashore area in many ways and for many years. Recently, and just in time for Restaurant Week, management revamped the bar at the club’s circa 1897 Tap Room Bar & Grille in custom cherry wood, and buoyed its beer lineup to include, among others, Blue Moon Belgian White, Leinenkugel Canoe Paddler, Magic Hat #9, Guinness, Stella Artois, Heineken, Sam Adams and Yuengling lagers. “Our redoing the bar was part of our reintroducing the club atmosphere to the community,” says ACCC membership and golf sales manager Ron Ralston. “The Tap Room has old ship-deck flooring and a nostalgic feel, and has been ranked among the top-50 19th holes [clubhouse tap rooms] in the world. We wanted to keep the old look and nostalgia of the bar top, but we upgraded it and made it look new with a custom cherry-wood top and a Chicago rail. We had a five-tap system that was on top of the bar, and we moved that to the back and added five more taps for a total of 10.” State-of-the-art chilling and gas-mixing tap systems, with a staff specially trained to prop-

erly use them, were added to keep the brews chilled at precisely 37 degrees and served with the perfect pour. A.C. Country Club executive chef Ed Daggers says that a special beer dinner is on tap following Restaurant Week, and some beer-infused fare is on the horizon for lunch and dinner specials. “We’ll be featuring each of our new beers paired with a dish [for the beer dinner] and we’re also planning on adding some different things to the menu to run on special, like Guinness-braised short ribs, maybe a Blue Moon beer-battered shrimp, fish or local seafood in season,” says Daggers, ACCC’s execu-

tive chef since 2007. “Once golf season gets going we’ll probably be doing a lot of things like hot dogs and knockwurst braised in beer, maybe a Magic Hat cheese sauce to go with fries, that sort of thing.” During Restaurant Week (March 2-7), the Tap Room will be open every day for lunch and dinner, and have a 4-7pm Happy hour with $3 domestic beers, $5 Guinnesses (or a $9 Guinness-and-Jameson “car bomb” combo) and other drink specials, plus plenty of $5 bar bites and appetizers. Visit accountryclub.com. *** The Continental at The Pier Shops at Caesars is hosting a Yards Brewery Beer Dinner on Friday, Feb. 28, starting 7pm. The event is $50 per person and will include a four-course dinner with beer pairings for each course. The special guest will be brewmaster/owner/co-founder Tom Kehoe of the Philadelphia-based Yards Brewery, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. The beers will include Yards Brawler, Rye IPA, Poor Richards Tavern Spruce, and Chocolate Love Stout. Reservations are limited. Call 6748300 or visit continentalac.com. *** The Pinelands Brewing Company will officially become South Jersey’s newest craft brewery when it hosts a grand-opening ceremony Saturday, March 1, from noon-5pm. Considered a nano-brewery (producing four

barrels or less per batch), Pinelands (140 7th Ave. in Little Egg Harbor) will make about six different handcrafted ales. Under the direction of founder/brewmaster Jason Chapman, an avid home brewer since 2000, the team also includes fellow South Jersey natives and Richard Stockton College graduates Nick Brown, Luke McCooley, Sean Collins and John Kugler. Pinelands Brewing intends to use fresh, locally sourced ingredients and water from the Kirkwood-Cohansey Aquifer, renowned for producing the best drinking water on the planet. “From our heritage to our beers to our equipment, Pinelands Brewing Company has a unique story, and our story has everything to do with our surroundings,” says Chapman. “Pristine, natural and timeless — we think it’s important to keep Pinelands at the center of all that we do.” Pinelands beers on tap will include Masons Wheat (an American whitbier), Evan John Porter (a robust porter infused with vanilla), Evergreen IPA (an American-style IPA, named after the 20-plus species of evergreens found in the Pine Barrens), Great Bay IPA (a malty red India Pale Ale), Pitch Pine Ale (a pale ale with a leaf-hop flavor, named after the most prominent tree in the Pinelands), and Cannonball Stout (a black American stout made with five malts and dark-roasted grain). However, last summer, after Revel emerged from a pre-packaged bankruptcy, The Social began showing signs of life. Management installed a cirque-style revue show and a mind-reader act, both of which met with positive critical and audience response. It also introduced a weekly comedy night in the laugh-friendly room, which continues today. The shows aren’t free, but at least it offers Revel’s guests entertainment during the long stretches that Ovation Hall — Revel’s gem of a 5,000-seat event venue — is dark. Now, Revel is upping the ante in The Social. In addition to signing the popular casino lounge band Don’t Call Me Francis to a “residency” gig for five free shows in the room through October, the casino has booked a mélange of musical acts. Blues guitarist and singer Johnny Winter kicks things off with a March 7 show, followed by the Bruce Springsteen tribute group known as the B Street Band on March 14 and the heavy metal band Queensrÿche on March 15. Singer and songwriter Edwin McCain, whose hits include “I’ll Be” and “I Could Not Ask For More,” is set for March 29. Other acts scheduled for The Social include the Canadian indie rock band Walk Off The Earth on May 23 (check out their low-budget viral videos on YouTube), reggae god Bob Marley’s band The Wailers, along with the fusion band Rusted Root, on May 24 and southern swamp rock and soul man JJ Grey and his band Mofro on May 31. Meanwhile, Revel is been beefing up its Ovation Hall lineup that — like the Social — features acts that wander across the entertainment spectrum. Oscar-winning actor and Grammy-winning comedian and recording artist Jamie Foxx shows off both sides of his artistic personality on March 7, with legendary and soulful Aretha Franklin commanding some respect on March 15. Comedian, actress and author Whoopi Goldberg cracks wise on the Ovation Hall stage on April 5, followed on April 12 by Don Omar, one of reggaeton’s most popular performers. The British electronic duo Pet Shop Boys bring its unique sound to the big room on April 25. Singer and recording artist (and well-proven casino draw) Julio Iglesias is set for May 3, followed by the hard rock band Alice in Chains on May 9 and comedy legend Bill Cosby on May 17. International recording artist Morrissey is schedule for June 6 and the long-running rock band Live has been booked for June 20. Additionally, Ovation Hall will play host to a pair of shows with international appeal. Greek music sensations Nikos Oikonomopoulos and Eleni Foureira are scheduled for March 22, while Bollywood star Atif Aslam will perform March 29. ■

peculation continues to swirl around the future of the Revel Casino Hotel. Virtually every day, a new scenario about the fate of the beleaguered property — the rumor du jour, if you will — begins making the rounds. That Revel is for sale is not a matter of conjecture. The company acknowledged late last year that selling the $2.4 billion resort is an option as it struggles to find market share in a market that’s been down on its luck for the past six years. Two companies with local ties have looked at the property closely: Hard Rock International, which owns several successful Florida casinos and the worldwide restaurant chain, and whose CEO is Northfield native and Mainland Regional High School alumni Jim Allen, is one. Caesars Entertainment, which already owns four Atlantic City casinos, is another. Although no one in an official capacity will confirm it, representatives of various gaming companies — some of whom once held key positions at several Atlantic City casinos — have been spotted touring the property, kicking the tires and trying to decide whether to make a run for the massive building that some touted as Atlantic City’s saving grace as it prepared to open two years ago. Would-be buyers, according to those in the know, agree that any new owner would have to seriously shuffle the deck to make the property more guest-friendly. But while they point out the perceived flaws in the building — it’s way too big, the casino was poorly designed, etc. — many seem to forget or simply choose to ignore one of the property’s bright spots, which is hiding in plain sight in the middle of the casino. Borrowing a concept introduced during his days at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut, Revel developer and former CEO Kevin DeSanctis included a showroom open to the casino floor. The 400-seater, known as The Social, was going to feature a kaleidoscope of entertainment throughout the day and night. Like the Wolf Den at Mohegan Sun, The Social would feature “name” entertainers that guests could enjoy for free — no tickets, no cover charge, no drink minimum. By day, The Social wouldn’t sit empty waiting for the evening crowd. Daytime visitors would be offered a broad array of celebrated personalities: popular TV chefs and celebrity cooks, best-selling authors, self-help gurus and the like. Revel planned to use The Social to bring people onto the casino floor for an event hoping they’d stay afterwards and contribute to the casino drop. But as Revel opened and reality set in — Revel wasn’t drawing the crowds and the gamblers everyone expected — things became decidedly anti-Social. With the exception of some lounge acts and a DJ, the room never lived up to its billing or its potential.

Bally’s Revival

The longtime annual winnings leader among Caesars Entertainment’s four Atlantic City properties looks to regain that distinction with millions of dollars in renovations. By Ray Schweibert • feedback@acweekly.com

C

aesars Entertainment’s Atlantic City interests have already grabbed a lot of headlines in 2014 with real-estate acquisitions, industry analysts weighing in on what the company might be interested in procuring, and speculation on what assets it might consider unloading on the heels of last October’s sale of the Claridge. One certainty is that the company clearly continues to be energetic in its investment in the resort town. Last summer ground was broken and construction begun for a $126 million meeting-and-conference center at its marina-district property, Harrah’s, which will be the largest venue of its kind in the Northeast when finished. More recently it made a multi-million-dollar investment in Bally’s — A.C.’s second oldest casinohotel behind Resorts, famously sited at Park Place and the Boardwalk — which comes about six years after a $60 million

total-room renovation of Bally’s historic annex, the Dennis Tower. Bally’s was long Atlantic City’s top-grossing casino, and held down the number-two spot for four years following the Borgata’s taking over the top tier in 2005. Since then, though, its fortunes have waned. In an effort to reverse the trend, Bally’s embarked on a four-month, $5.6 million casino-floor renovation project that was officially unveiled in a gala celebration Sunday, Feb. 16. Additionally, Bally’s sunk $1.2 million into a new 42-table, state-of-the-art, World Series of Poker (WSOP)-branded poker room and expanded amenities in its Wild Wild West casino. The overhaul includes a new entertainment stage for bands and live-performances, referred to as the Party Pit, and the reopening of the casino’s previously closed Pacific Avenue entrance. The

Party Pit features a newly created stage area and floor space that is positioned directly across from the Mountain Bar, home to Bally’s 24/7 Happy hour. It will host regularly scheduled live music by many of the area’s best-known cover bands. Wild Wild West will also make tableside food service available to poker players. “The Wild Wild West provides locals and visitors alike with a truly unique experience of branded entertainment, gaming, and unparalleled excitement, so with these latest additions the property can now lay claim to a top-notch poker room and a game-changing party pit,” says Kevin Ortzman, senior vice president and general manager of Bally’s, Caesars and Showboat A.C. “We believe this development will forever evolve the face of poker in Atlantic City and expand our ability to provide guests with the highest quality of gaming

and live entertainment opportunities available.” Renovations to Bally’s gaming floor include all new carpeting, designated walkways and mirrored trim; a completely reconfigured casino-floor layout; gaming pits adorning the pathways to generate more on-floor action and excitement; stateof-the-art custom slot signage and slot machines positioned in new color-coded locations; and plush new chairs at slots and table games. “These renovations will provide us with the opportunity to elevate our guests’ entire experience to unprecedented levels, thereby enhancing the allurement and essence of this true Atlantic City landmark,” said Ortzman. Bally’s internal team formulated the conceptual work of casino floor, while the architecture and design specifics were carried out by the Las Vegas-based Friedmutter Group Architecture & Design Studios. E-Gads of Las Vegas, a 35-year veteran of fabrication and electronics in the gaming industry, was responsible for the slot-area signage. “They started [renovations] in October and put over five-and-a-half million dollars into everything from carpets to painting to furniture, they repositioned the whole floor,” says noted game-show host, author and motivational speaker Todd Newton, who emceed Bally’s Grand Re-Opening Sweepstakes on Feb. 16. “You’ll notice that the pathways have been cleared and widened so that it’s just a smoother transition and a more comfortable environment and more modern atmosphere. “I know the folks behind Bally’s and I know their visions and desires to make it as great for their patrons as possible,” adds Newton. “It’s a whole new vibe, a whole new energy there. They’re taking things in a new direction while being very conscious of the fact that a lot of their guests just love the lure and the tradition that is Bally’s. They’re walking it in that perfect fashion that only Bally’s AC can.” ■ see more online @

Snack foods can be healthy with smart choices

M

than other high-calorie foods. Many fruits and vegetables are packed with vitamins and other nutrients, which are needed to keep a body healthy. Many also make good sources of fiber, which can help you feel satiated longer between meals. * Choose foods with healthy fats. Not all fats are bad. Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats lower total cholesterol and bad cholesterol in the blood. Sources of good fats include nuts, olive oil, avocado, salmon, soy, and sunflower oil. Skip foods that have high levels of saturated fats, which are mainly found in animal products. Trans fats are perhaps the worst fats to eat, as they are produced by hydrogenation to give them a longer shelf life. Avoid foods that contain hydrogenized oils. * Opt for snacks that mimic the texture of unhealthy snacks. Sometimes you may crave something crunchy or a particular comfort food. Choose a crunchy whole grain cereal over potato chips. If you desire a cool, creamy treat, frozen yogurt has much fewer calories than ice cream. * Pack on the lean protein. Lean sources of protein, such as slices of turkey, egg whites and soybeans, will fill you up and keep you feeling full longer than many carbohydrates. A snack of sushi can fill you up quickly. One piece of aCalifornia roll is just 30 calories and has less than a gram of fat. * Keep healthy snacks handy. Always have a bag of healthy snacks handy in the event you get hungry. This way you avoid a trip through the drive-thru or a pit stop for a doughnut or another snack. ■. CONTINUED ON NEXT PG.

edical professionals often warn that snack foods can be unhealthy, upsetting dieting plans and causing a person to consume more calories than is recommended. While a number of snack foods, particularly snacks that are laden with saturated fats, sodium and many calories, can be detrimental to your health, there are plenty of healthy snacks available to men and women who know where to look. Self magazine reports Americans consume 26 percent of their calories at times other than breakfast, lunch and dinner. Many fitness plans actually recommend regular snacking as part of a “grazing” mentality. Grazing, or eating several small meals per day rather than three large ones, can help keep metabolism primed and ready to burn calories. Grazing also enables a person to avoid overeating at any particular meal. But grazing on the wrong foods can be counterproductive. That’s why selecting the right snacks is important. * Aim for snacks that are 100 calories or less. One-hundred calorie snacks can help you fill you up and stave off hunger pangs. While there are plenty of prepackaged 100-calorie snacks available, you can easily make your own snack packs by being conscious of nutrition labels. Measure serving sizes of healthy foods into separate containers so you’re less likely to eat more than is necessary. * Fill up on fruits and vegetables. Produce can make a healthy snack because it is generally low in calories, which means portion sizes will be larger

When fellow diners order potentially fattening appetizers, ask to have a side salad with low-fat dressing on the side instead. * Leave a little behind on your plate. Restaurant portions can be substantial, so don’t feel as if you need to finish your entire meal. You can always ask the waiter to pack up what you have left behind, or, when ordering, ask if the restaurant offers smaller portions at lower prices. * Skip the dips and dressings. Many condiments can add unwanted calories to a meal, making even a healthy entree a calorie-laden meal that’s best avoided. For example, a salad covered in creamy Caesar salad dressing can take away from the overall nutritive value of the salad. Don’t be afraid to ask for substitutions or simply ask to have dressings put on the side so if you must indulge you can do so without going overboard. * Eat in the hours leading up to your dinner. Low-fat snacks eaten throughout the day will reduce the likelihood that you will overeat at the dinner table. Drink a tall glass of water and enjoy some low-calorie fruit so you won’t be famished once you arrive at the restaurant. * Avoid buffet-style restaurants. ining out at a restaurant is a treat for many people, while for others it’s a way of life. On-the-go professionals often find that dining out is simply more convenient than cooking at home. However, large portion sizes and dishes that tend to contain a lot of sodium and fat can make dining out less healthy than eating at home, which is a concern for those men and women who want to shed a few pounds. But dining out does not have to be done at the expense of your waistline. The following are a few ways dieters can still enjoy their favorite restaurants without having to worry about their weight. * Order foods that are broiled, boiled or roasted. Foods that are broiled, boiled or roasted tend to be healthier than foods cooked in other ways. When ordering your meal, ask that oils be used sparingly if not removed completely. The basics of boosting metabolism M

en and women looking to shed a few pounds and keep those pounds off often look for ways to boost their metabolisms. Some may not know just what metabolism means, and though it is a complicated combination of processes, metabolism is perhaps best explained as the sum of those processes, each of which is instituted to convert food into energy. So it’s no surprise that so many people, especially men and women whose metabolisms have begun to slow down, want to boost their metabolism and turn that food into energy more quickly. Though metabolism is a collection of complicated processes, boosting metabolism can be rather easy. The following are a handful of ways to do so, which can help men and women reach their fitness goals. * Eat the right foods and eat more often. Many adults have been turned on to the concept of grazing, an approach to diet wherein adherents eat small portions of food every two to three hours instead of the more traditional three square meals per day. But grazing is only effective when men and women eat the right foods. Each small meal should still have nutritional value just as if it were a large meal. When eating smaller meals, include healthy sources of protein and fiber. Vegetables tend to be especially beneficial because they are high in fiber, a nondigestible carbohydrate that is hard for the body to break down. As the body works hard to break down fiber, it’s burning energy and boosting its metabolism along the way. Fish is another potentially beneficial food for those looking to boost their metabolisms, as studies have shown that

the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oils increase the levels of fat-burning enzymes in the body while decreasing the body’s level offat-storage enzymes. Eating more often benefits the body because doing so stimulates metabolism, reassuring the body that food will be coming on a regular basis. When meals are skipped or there are long intervals between meals, the body reacts as if it might run out of food and begins to store fat. * Add some lean muscle. Lean muscle can boost metabolism, so a workout dominated by cardiovascular exercise won’t have as positive an impact on metabolism as one that includes a combination of weight training and aerobic exercise. When muscles are worked hard, the body needs to work hard to recover and rebuild those muscles, burning more calories and boosting metabolism as a result. * Don’t believe everything you read or hear. Suggestions abound as to ways to significantly improve metabolism. Unfortunately, many of these suggestions boost metabolism but not enough to help people lose weight, which is the ultimate goal of many people looking to boost their metabolisms. For example, green tea has its proponents who feel it can have a significant impact on metabolism thanks to EGCG, a compound found in the tea that has been proven to elevate metabolism. However, the impact of EGCG on boosting metabolism is negligible, and therefore won’t make much of an impact on a person’s weight. The same can be said about capsaicin, an active component found in chili peppers that some feel boosts metabolism enough to promote weight loss. Though capsaicin can boost metabolism slightly, studies have shown that influence is not significant enough to affect a person’s weight. * Don’t get too comfortable. Modern technology may be a reason why waist sizes are getting bigger. Heating and cooling systems may be must-have items, but when the body is too comfortable, it burns less energy to stay warm in the winter or comfortably cool in the summer. A study from the National Institute of Health Clinical Center found that people who slept in a room kept at 66 F burned 7 percent more calories than those who slept in a room at 75 F. Sleeping in a cooler room may just be the easiest way for men and women to boost their metabolisms. Boosting metabolism and shedding extra pounds is a goal for many men and women. But while metabolism is a complex set of processes, the various ways to effectively boost that metabolism can be quite simple. n

AC Restaurant Week ’14

Seven days of specials from lunches to suppers in and around the Atlantic City area March 2-8

28

FEB. 27 - MARCH 5, 2014 • ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY

H

aving enduring the most harrowing winter in 20 years, Atlantic City’s upcoming Restaurant Week serves as a most appealing reminder that the promise of spring remains only a few short weeks away. With 83 eateries involved regionally, this sixth annual event, Sunday, March 2, through Saturday, March 8, offers a virtual cornucopia of dining alternatives. Whether tastes run toward casual or fine, ethnic or traditional, there is literally something — more accurately multiple somethings — for everyone. The format remains simple; three-course, prix-fixe menus for lunch at $15.14 and dinner for $33.14. This concept is a win for all involved. Adventurous patrons are provided access to unfamiliar places at almost painless price points. Kitchens get a chance to demonstrate creativity, often test-marketing potential new menu items. The economic trickle-down benefits are undeniable, as Atlantic City Restaurant Week brings badly needed late-winter foot traffic and generates significant residual public relations value for the resort. So, after extensive thought and consideration, here are our suggestions for 2014.

Lunch

It seems appropriate to commence with A.C.’s most iconic restaurant, the Knife and Fork. Lunch here is a one-off deal, served Friday only and from past experience, will fill quickly. Newly installed chef Jim Huntzinger plans selections honoring tradition, like their venerable corn and crab chowder with jalapeno cream, crab cakes and elevated fish and chips starring beer battered flounder accompanied by smashed fingerlings. Sliced filet mignon salad with arugula, grape tomatoes, shaved parm and citrus vinaigrette provides a fine option for carnivores. Pacific Avenue-fronting Italian gem Girasole possesses chic, sun-dappled interiors and one

facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly

of the most extensive midday food listings. Starters range from Caesar salad to a pair of carpaccios — beef and tuna — and pizzas of margherita and fra diavolo persuasion. Big plates include house-made pastas like tagliatelle with Bolognese sauce, spaghetti carbonara, farfalle with smoked salmon in tomato blush and rigatoni Girasole, a cool riff on traditional Roman sauce amatriciana. One of the mainland’s prettiest spots, The Inn at Sugar Hill in Mays Landing, overlooks a scenic watery locale. Tempting you on a brief ride west are lunch entrees the likes of walnutcrusted salmon with basil butter and lemon vinaigrette, meatloaf — featuring beef sourced from Colorado’s Myers Ranch — and mushroom gravy, pan-seared crab cake with roasted tomato remoulade or a dynamic arugula salad tossed with agave nectar roasted pear, dried cherries, crushed walnuts, goat cheese and a chipotle-pomegranate vinaigrette. New to Linwood’s Central Square, multibranded chef Luke Palladino’s Seasonal Italian Cooking delights with high-profile fare. Begin with hearty Umbrian heirloom bean soup, sweet and sour butternut squash with toasted garlic, vinegar and mint or marinated beets, tarragon and pistachio. Then select from a chef’s daily pasta — which should make for really brilliant stuff — or a choice from among three paninis plus their whole wheat strozzapreti pasta with broccoli rabe, roasted grape tomatoes and garlic. Another elegant mainland facility, Galloway Township’s Ram’s Head Inn, proposes lunch apps of house-smoked salmon, lobster bisque and spaetzle — delightful German-style pasta, underrepresented in southern New Jersey — with sage butter sauce. Then choose from among lobster ravioli, capon chicken stuffed with risotto and a wild mushroom sauce, their signature copper kettle chicken pot pie or pork tenderloin with Brussels sprouts, cranberries, bacon and sweet and sour glaze. The most exotic collection of midday dining arrives courtesy of Borgata’s Noodles of the World. An anomaly during Restaurant Week, NOW only presents a lunch menu, with no evening option. Anticipate traditional edamame, Korean specialty kimchi (potent pickled Napa cabbage with garlic and chiles) chicken satay, hot and sour or vegetable soup apps. Then explore a bit further with items like Hong Kong beef fried rice, kimchi fried rice, pork lo mein or chicken pad Thai. Similarly only serving during lunch hours, Bill’s Burger Bar at Harrah’s has a most unusual patty preparation, Kobe burger with brie, apple butter, caramelized onion and sautéed spinach.

Dinner

If you have not yet visited Iron Chef Marc

By Frank Gabriel

Forgione’s thoroughly modern new-age steak house, American Cut at Revel, here’s an ideal opportunity, with smart starts like tuna tartare with miso dashi, calamansi lime and American caviar, OG 1924 Caesar salad or Schaller and Weber bacon accompanied by the house’s MF steak sauce and black onion. Choose big plates from among a ten ounce filet, Bell and Evans chicken under a brick or Dad’s planked salmon (honoring Forgione’s chef father, Larry, a famed NYC restaurateur.) Each is accompanied by a choice of three sides; carrot glazed carrots, wood fired cream spinach or potato puree “Robuchon.” Galloway Township’s Assaggio! warrants a trip to Atlantic County’s northern outskirts for items like pan-seared scallops wrapped in prosciutto with orange and fig marmalade, broccoli raab sautéed with sweet sausage and classic eggplant rolletini. Four planned entrees are pasta Assaggio, a sampler trio of styles, broiled flounder stuffed with spinach, shrimp and mozzarella, chicken Marlee encrusted with mushrooms and seasoned bread crumbs in Dijon Alfredo sauce or veal Pantano, breaded cutlet topped with arugula, tomato and roasted pepper salad. Another Revel outlet, Robert Wiedemaier’s Mussel Bar and Grill, evidences admirable vision and an inspired bill of fare starting with choices of wild gulf shrimp bisque, a complex roasted beet salad accented by sheep milk feta, candied walnuts and maple bacon vinaigrette, Caesar salad or ½ lb. of Blue Bay mussels in white wine. Larger plates really dazzle: pan-roasted “Everything” salmon, aided by Benton’s bacon boursin, Brussels puree and fried Brussel sprouts, cave-aged Gruyere mussels, fingerlings, pancetta and gremolata, herb-roasted natural chicken, Gruyere polenta, horseradish farmer’s cheese, shaved radish and mushroom cream. But for our money, Dean’s famous Kobe beef burger is the wise play; topped with smoked mozz, balsamic-tossed arugula and BBQ tomato jam on a house-made Brioche bun. Newly expanded and repositioned, Nero’s Chop House and Sushi Bar at Caesar’s showcases the skills of veteran A.C. culinary figure Keith Mitchell. Each item on their bill of fare represents classic Continental cuisine from his contemporary point-of-view. Sample Nero’s chop salad; tomatoes, cucumbers, olives, peppers, feta cheese and red wine vinaigrette, escargot crostini in Burgundy wine with triple cream brie, herb pesto and Pernod or crab and shrimp Louis, Gulf crab and shrimp, creamy Louis dressing, butter lettuce and homemade oyster crackers. Show-stopping entrees begin with a pretzel-crusted local flounder, mashed potatoes and mustard buerre blanc, grilled filet mignon sided by roasted asparagus, crispy fingerling potatoes and port wine sauce and a fabulous-sounding petite mixed grill composed of Kobe rib cap, Cape May scallop and Gulf

shrimp with an autumn grain salad. Cozy and historic, the Grill Room at Seaview Resort in Galloway serves upscale pub fare in a clubby, convivial atmosphere. Their presentations properly reflect that environment. Start with soup — either chowder or tomato — or a pair of salads, watermelon with arugula and goat cheese or Caesar. Entrees are led by a hefty 16-ounce rib eye — the very best cut of steak, for our money — with charred tomato, roasted long hots and fingerlings and Seaview scallops, sided by succotash, corn, mushrooms, tomatoes, poblano peppers and green beans with a tomato vinaigrette. Atlantic City’s best views come gratis at The Pier Shops at Caesars’ Continental restaurant. Portioned for sharing, their plates are consistently full of whimsy and stylish technique. General manager Jonathan Karp — himself a top-notch chef — is one of the region’s most professional, affable restaurant folk. Visit during Restaurant Week and you’ll enjoy a choice of apps that include Thai chicken skewers, crispy Brussels sprouts or fish taco apps. We’d implore you towards the chicken and waffle entrée with applewood-smoked bacon gravy, but you also can’t go wrong with seared tuna, flat iron steak, BBQ salmon or pad Thai. Don’t miss the house-made beignet dessert, a classic New Orleans treat, served with berries and elderberry honey dip.

Desserts

Golden Nugget’s seafood anchor the Chart House closes out its menu with a truly decadent sweet, their mini lava cake. Rich chocolate enrobes a molten center rich with Godiva liqueur. Served warm, a Heath Bar crunch and vanilla ice cream accompany this house signature, one of A.C. most elegant desserts. Tropicana’s entry in the seafood category, Fin, plates a trio of treats. Headed by their own cacao-infused specialty, chocolate jubilation cake they also present Meyer lemon cheesecake and Tahitian vanilla crème brulee. Margate bastion Tomatoe’s may be known as the area’s finest sushi purveyor — for good reason — but the divine desserts of co-owner Karen Rone have concluded many great meals for us. Her offerings are a banana spice cake with vanilla-scented cream cheese frosting and Lemoncello gelato, derived from potent Italian liqueur infused with citrus. Finally, another local landmark, Northfield’s A.C. Country Club Tap Room Bar and Grill, convenes a trio of unusual endings: Chef Ed Daggers’ butterscotch pie with warm chocolate sauce, mile high coconut cream pie with mango sauce and the single most wildly inventive closing concoction we saw on any R.W. menu, red velvet waffles, popcorn and buttermilk ice creams finished by chocolate malt sauce. 86th Oscars: Predictions ‘12 Years A Slave,’ ‘Gravity’ head the field in a tight race. By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com

T

his year’s Academy Awards actually have some suspense as not every major award is a mortal lock and the Best Picture race is truely up in the air. What we do know is that 12 Years A Slave and Gravity are the two films likely to take home the most gold, with American Hustle in the bronze position. Here are my predictions and preferences for the major categories, plus my quick picks for the rest of the awards. The Academy Awards will be broadcast on Sunday, March 2 (7pm red carpet, 8pm awards), on ABC with popular Ellen DeGeneres back for a second stint as host. Best Supporting Actor Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips) Bradley Cooper (American Hustle) Michael Fassbender (12 Years a Slave) Jonah Hill (The Wolf of Wall Street) Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club) Prediction: Jared Leto Preference: Michael Fassbender — Leto is amazing and has won most of the pre-Oscar awards in this category. Fassbender was brilliant and didn’t hold back in presenting pure evil as a psychotic slaveowner. Best Supporting Actress Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine) Jennifer Lawrence (American Hustle) Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave) Julia Roberts (August: Osage County) June Squibb (Nebraska) Prediction: Lupita Nyong’o Preference: Lupita Nyong’o — Newcomer Nyong’o has become a multiple award winner and an instant fashion icon giving her the biggest buzz. Also, she deserves the award for her brilliant performance. The only other possibility is Hollywood’s new “it” girl, Jennifer Lawrence.

Best Actor Christian Bale (American Hustle) Bruce Dern (Nebraska) Royal Albert’s Palace Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf of Wall On the Boardwalk at Trump Taj Mahal. Street) 449-9200. Fine Indian cuisine. Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Sultan’s Feast Club) Buffet features black angus steaks Prediction: Matthew McConaughey grilled to order and more. Preference: Chiwetel Ejiofor — There is a sense that 12 Years A Slave is too brutal, Spice Road which has hurt Ejiofor’s chances and veteran Selection of eateries including Go, Maharaj Express, Plate American Cafe, McConaughey has won most of the awards so far. DiCaprio really wants to win and is the Panda Express, White House Subs, upset choice. Sbarro and Starbucks. n

facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly

Best Actress Amy Adams (American Hustle) Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine) Sandra Bullock (Gravity) Judi Dench (Philomena) Meryl Streep (August: Osage County) Prediction: Cate Blanchett Preference: Cate Blanchett — The Woody Allen controversy has given Blanchett a sympathy vote, not that she needed it for her amazing performance. If Bullock or Dench were to win, I would also be satisfied. Best Director American Hustle (David O. Russell) Gravity (Alfonso Cuarón) Nebraska (Alexander Payne) 12 Years a Slave (Steve McQueen) The Wolf of Wall Street (Martin Scorsese) Prediction: Alfonso Cuarón Preference: Alfonso Cuarón — The directors guild has already chosen Cuarón for their award. He invented a new way of filmmaking that makes outer space look real. Combine innovation with a brilliant film and he is the one totally mortal lock of the evening. Best Motion Picture American Hustle Captain Phillips Dallas Buyers Club Gravity Her Nebraska Philomena 12 Years a Slave The Wolf of Wall Street Prediction: Gravity Preference: 12 Years A Slave, Gravity tie. These two movies are both so different but both are unforgettable in their own way, and in my dream world they tie for the big prize. 12 Years A Slave has allegedly turned voters off because of the brutality, but if you are going to tell the truth about our country’s shameful past, you have to be brutal. American Hustle might sneak in if the votes are split. Everything Else Here are my choices for the rest of the awards: adapted screenplay, 12 Years A Slave; original screenplay, Nebraska; animated feature, Frozen; production design, 12 Years A Slave; cinematography, Gravity; costume design, American Hustle; documentary feature, 20 Feet From Stardom; documentary short, The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life; film editing, Gravity; foreign language film, The Missing Picture (Cambodia); makeup, Dallas Buyers Club; original film score, Gravity; original song, “Happy” from Despicable Me 2; animated short, Mr. Hublot; live action short, Helium; sound editing, Captain Phillips; sound mixing, Gravity; visual effects, Gravity. ■ see more online @

Get Down with Robin Thicke The smooth and suave performer appears at Borgata just as he’s hitting his groove. By Ed Condran • feedback@acweekly.com

P

“Sometimes it’s best to work for something for years and reach that reward later.” father’s old, unlamented sitcom. But unlike many kids who grew up in Hollywood, Thicke is the genuine article. “I grew up on soul music,” Thicke said. “My mother always loved vocalists like Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder. I always listened to that and I just loved it from early on.” Thicke gets it. He has the moves and the smarts to take it to another level and he’s been wise enough to use everyone’s favorite producer Pharrell Williams since 2006. His tunes set the mood, his videos are salacious and his stage presence smacks of action not witnessed since a generation ago. The sixth time is the charm for Thicke. His latest album is his most complete offering and it’s been embraced by the masses. The only surprising thing is that it’s taken

this long for Thicke to break big. He was slated to play Philly’s intimate World Cafe Live only two years ago. Due to last-minute illness, however, the show was scrapped. Good luck catching Thicke at a cozy venue again. It was only a matter of time for Thicke to breathe such rarified air. Interscope CEO Jimmy Iovine was taken aback when he heard Thicke’s voice when the future pop star was only 16. There was a huge buzz surrounding his 2003 debut album, Beautiful World. He had the voice, the songs, the production and the promotion, but like many releases that appeared set to reach the stratosphere, the album tanked. Even though the masses didn’t latch on, those in the industry, such as the afore-

EVENT INFO mentioned Williams, realized that Thicke possesses a special gift. His follow-up album, The Evolution of Robin Thicke, went platinum, buoyed by the ballad “Lost Without U.” The next three releases, however, failed to reach the gold standard. But everything has changed with Blurred Lines. For one thing, Thicke opened up and decided to work with some producers who possess the Midas touch. Williams, Will.i.am, Dr. Luke and Timbaland helped Thicke reach another echelon. That goes for sonic and commercial appeal. “Sometimes it’s best to work for something for years and reach that reward later,” Thicke said. Thicke makes like a contemporary Marvin Gaye as Blurred Lines is full of sexy, smart songs, which are at their best when Thicke is most commanding. The line “you know you want it,” which is sprinkled throughout “Blurred Lines,” was from the mind of Williams. Although the song has created some controversy as it has irked women who cry that the phrase screams rape, Thicke isn’t about rape. Thicke seemes to be simply bucking the politically correct world, which is suffocating entertainment. He’s gone out on a limb in pop music and it’s been a generation since that’s been the norm — that’s likely part of his success today. Aside from that, Thicke is a dynamic, natural entertainer, who is just hitting his groove. Perhaps his wife should reconsider leaving the smooth and suave singer, who is one of pop music’s most charismatic performers. Sure, that’s probably by default as there aren’t many fascinating, unpredictable figures behind the microphone these days. But Thicke and his one-time stage mate Miley Cyrus are among the few. Hopefully Thicke will continue to take chances and work with some of the smartest hit-makers in the business. ■

rior to hitting the stage at the Q 102/I Heart Radio event at the Wells Fargo Center two months ago, Robin Thicke was smiling. He had every reason to be grinning from ear to ear. Thicke, who possesses a mane that lives up to his last name, is finally emerging as a star. The nattily attired singer has eclipsed his father’s fame. “It’s really crazy how things are going,” Thicke told this writer. “Things are going really well.” “Blurred Lines,” his smash hit, makes it crystal clear. Thicke is a bonafide sensation with no ceiling. Yes, the word is out that Thicke and his wife Paula Patton have split. But Thicke will not be without female companionship for long. Girls swooned when Thicke turned the concert, which also featured such heavy hitters as Pitbull and Jason DeRulo, into overdrive. The women shrieked when Thicke turned it up with his slinky R&B sounds. “This is my style of music,” Thicke said. “It’s not as if I decided to go this direction because I saw a hole in the market. I’ve always loved it.” Thicke’s passion is evident. The tall, slim singer will showcase tracks from his latest and sixth album, which is also dubbed Blurred Lines, Sunday, March 3, and at the Borgata in Atlantic City. Thicke, 36, who is the son of actors Alan Thicke of Growing Pains fame and Gloria Loring, isn’t the first successful recording artist to come from privilege. Members of the Strokes, Vampire Weekend and a number of other Thicke’s contemporaries were born to prosperous families. But there’s no pretense or drama with Thicke. When Miley Cyrus shocked the world while twerking during a Video Music Award performance with Thicke, he appeared as surprised as the MTV audience. There’s something about him as wholesome as his
