he influence of the Irish culture on American soil is vast thanks to the many immigrants who came to America looking for a new life. Celtic Nights, being presented at Richard Stockton College on Wednesday, March 6, features a group of touring Irish musicians and singers who draw from the history and folklore of Ireland and her Celtic cousins, bringing the audience to the world of a people leaving and arriving, their lives spent in a world of ships, trains and planes, coaches and horses, searching for a place better than Ireland or half as good. The cast of three male vocalists and three female singers, along with six of Ireland’s most talented international dancers and two fine musicians will envelope the stage with the sounds of Celtic music old and new. The influence of the old music on what became American sounds — bluegrass, Appalachian, country and western or the great songs and ballads from Shenandoah to the songs of The American Civil War — will also be a part of the Celtic Nights experience. The artists from Celtic Nights will meet with the audience during and after the performance. 7:30pm. $40 orchestra, $25 mezzanine, $5 senior discount, $10 for children (with adult ticket) 652-9000. stockton.edu/pac

The song “Somewhere,” recorded 45 years ago by Jimi Hendrix and unearthed for the new People, Hell & Angels Hendrix album, hit No. 1 on the Billboard charts upon its release in mid-February. The song, created during Hendrix’s first studio session in America, features Buddy Miles on drums and Stephen Stills on bass. The song was tucked away, as with the 11 other studio recordings on this fantastic new release, the overall sound quality of which is incredible. Although the previously unreleased completed tracks were recording during various sessions and with a variety of players towards the end of Hendrix’s life (and all-too-short musical career), there is a cohesion to the album and the producers obviously worked diligently to make this album sound like a “new” and “whole” record. Although some of these songs have been heard before via other sessions/performances, this is an album for Hendrix newbies and long-time fans alike. (Even die-hard Hendrix fans most likely haven’t heard some of this material.) — JS

Review: The Who

Feb. 22: Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City By Jeff Schwachter

T

wo hours before the sold-out crowd at Atlantic City’s historic Boardwalk Hall even heard one of the Who’s many well-known classics (including “Who Are You,” “Behind Blue Eyes,” “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” “Baba O’Reilly”) Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey and the eight other band members on stage had re-created – with passion – the band’s 1973 album and rock opera Quadrophenia. In front of a submarine backdrop, with giant recreations of windows looking out at the sea showing a concert-length montage of cool early B&W images of the Who, mixed in with classic concert footage (including crowd-pleasing extended solos by late original members John Entwistle and Keith Moon, which the live band played along with on stage), photographs, live in-house footage and (lots of) ocean waves, the 10-piece Who ripped into Quadrophenia soon after the close of the opening band’s (Vintage Trouble) terrific set. Townshend, windmills and all, wailed on songs such as “I’m One” and “The Real Me” while a fit Daltrey — especially noticeable when he completely unbuttoned his white longsleeve button down shirt — hit all the right notes, giving a commanding vocal performance of the night’s highlight “Love Rain O’er Me,” which lit up the crowd. He also did some nice harmonica playing and his trademark microphone-cord whiparound tricks. Townshend, who also sang, made mention of Hurricane Sandy and also noted how legendary a venue Boardwalk Hall is in the history of rock. He seemed in great spirits and was obviously in his glory bringing back his 1973 opus to the stage 40 years after its release. When the Who announced the Quadrophenia and More Tour (live via the Internet in July 2012), it sparked excitement and surprise for many fans. As the crowd in Atlantic City showed, the album was an extraordinary choice of material for Townshend and Daltrey to choose to base a tour on. All of the selections were welcomed with open arms by the audience and as the several thousand fans sang along to every song, it was obvious that the Who — which now includes Ringo Starr’s son Zak Starkey on drums (doing a sublime and at times eerie tribute to Moon), Pino Palladino on bass, Pete’s brother Simon Townshend on guitar and vocals and several others, including a mini brass section — were having a blast. see more online @

Get your groove on for a good cause Friday night when the Alcove A Go Go rocks the Trop’s retro nightclub Boogie Nights. By Ray Schweibert • feedback@acweekly.com

very weekend baby boomers hark back to their more youthful years when they visit Boogie Nights — the Tropicana club that set the standard and repeatedly raises the bar on reliving the decades of the ’70s and ’80s. This Friday, March 1, youth will be served in a more philanthropic fashion, as Boogie Nights will play host to the Alcove A Go Go retro party to benefit the Alcove Center for Grieving Children and Families. “A few years ago my friend [and Atlantic City Weekly columnist] David Spatz introduced me to the Alcove Center and explained to me what they do,” says Dave Pena, creator and operator of Boogie Nights. “I thought it was a wonderful and important cause, and provides a much-needed service to children and grieving families during difficult times. “When David and I were taping the Boogie Nights reality series [a four-part series that aired last summer on Spatz’s NBC-TV 40 version of Curtain Call] he said that Boogie Nights at the Tropicana would be a perfect place to hold an Alcove fundraiser. We are super excited and honored to be the host venue, and are planning to throw one big party. We want everyone to have a blast and help the Alcove raise money.” In a down economy, the need for monetary support is more difficult to come by and more important than ever according to Mindy Shemtov, director and co-founder of the center in 2001. She knew the need for bereavement support in southern New Jersey was great since her days as supervisor of the sexual assault program at the Atlantic County Women’s Center. Just how great the need came as somewhat of a shock when the center opened and quickly branched into a network of outreach programs, in-house counseling and professional services supported by plenty of volunteer assistance. No one at the Northfield-based Alcove Center — a large majority of whom are children grieving the untimely death of a parent or primary caregiver — is ever turned away, despite the non-profit organization subsisting entirely on donations, corporate or foundation grants, and fundraisers like the Alcove A Go Go. “Since we’re not government supported, we have to raise every penny ourselves to keep this organization afloat so that we can be here for the children and their families,” says Shemtov who, along with retired Alcove co-founder Pat Smith, holds a Masters of Social Work degree. “That’s why these fundraisers are so important, so that we’re able to be here for everybody who needs us. And this one at Boogie Nights guarantees to be so much fun.”

facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly

The party is set for 6:30-9pm. Four children who have been a part of the Alcove Center’s programming have put together short testimonials that, in their own words, explain why the center’s future survival is so crucial. “They were taped making their little speeches and we’ll play the tape at the event, so that people can really get a flavor for how important it is that we are here for them,” says Shemtov. The party is scheduled for 6:30-9pm. A $75-per-person donation (group rates include four tickets for $240 or 10 for $500) will get partygoers passed hors d’oeuvres, complimentary beer and wine throughout the evening, a silent auction and raffle prizes, and a live auction featuring four signed prints of iconic figures from the rock ‘n’ roll world — including Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, Jon Bon Jovi and Donna Summer — taken and donated by the preeminent rock photographer of the last 40 years, Mark Weiss (visit markweissgallery.com). “Boogie Nights has been a popular choice for fundraising and group events since it opened last May,” says Tropicana general manager Steve Callender. “The ’70s and ’80s theme provides a fun light-hearted atmosphere, which will be the perfect backdrop for this event.” The event will be broadcast live on KOOL 98.3 FM radio. To purchase tickets, visit the Alcove Center’s Web site at thealcove.org or call 484-1133 ■

Road Warrior Bolton Back in Atlantic City By David J. Spatz • feedback@acweekly.com

W

ith a string of top-10 singles that spun off a series of platinum-selling albums, there’s no denying that Michael Bolton’s diet of mostly power ballads and Motown covers has paid off handsomely. His success has earned him the right to go out on stage each night and serenade his audience with nothing but his own big hits. And it isn’t very likely he’d hear any complaints from his loyal legion of fans, who have been snapping up his albums and packing his concerts for more than a quarter-century. Bolton turned 60 earlier this week, but the only midlife crisis he seemed to be experiencing is which new project to tackle first. “It’s both exciting and [I’m] in a state of denial,” he told the York, Pa., Daily Record recently. Bolton celebrated his actual birthday on the road, a place that’s been both comfortable and familiar to him since the late 1970s. “That is really exciting to me,” he said. “Touring is my primary love.” Just because he’s entering his sixth decade doesn’t mean Bolton is showing any signs of slowing down. In January, he released his autobiography The Soul of It All: My Music, My Life. A few weeks later, he debuted his 21st studio album, Ain’t No Mountain High Enough: A Tribute to Hitsville U.S.A., which pays tribute to the music of Motown and the influential stars it’s produced. “Almost every artist I know has visited that body of work,” he said of the Detroit-based sound that produced artists like Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder and the late Marvin Gaye and also helped break down racial barriers in America. “They brought music that united the youth of America,” he added. “You would see shows like American Bandstand [have] mixed audiences for the first time. What’s not lost on me was that part of our history and the cultural statement that was made.” Expect to hear some cuts from the new album when Bolton returns to Harrah’s Resort for a one-night-stand Saturday, March 2, along with many of the songs that were hits for both Bolton and artists he’s written for over the years. What you won’t hear are songs he performed when he was still known by his birth name, Michael Bolotin, and was fronting the hard rock band Blackjack and opening for the likes of Ozzy Osboune and Peter Frampton in the late 1970s. But even that wasn’t his entry into the recording business. He released his first album as a solo artist in 1975. The self-titled collection of songs didn’t exactly rock the charts. He released two albums with Blackjack in 1979 and 1980, and while the LPs didn’t exactly burn up the charts, they gave Bolton plenty of exposure as a songwriter. Either by

Michael Botlon

Bolton spent his 60th birthday on the road earlier this month. himself or in collaboration with fellow band member Bruce Kulick — now a member of Grand Funk Railroad and a former member of KISS — Bolton wrote all 10 tracks on the band’s debut album. Bolton gained major recognition as a songwriter when Laura Branigan sang his song “How Am I Supposed To Live Without You” to the top of the adult contemporary list in 1983. By the end of the ’80s, Bolton had emerged as a sought-after pop composer and began performing a combination of both original material and covers of classics, like his take on Otis Redding’s “[Sittin’ On] The Dock of the Bay.” Several years later, his searing and soulful interpretation of the Percy Sledge anthem “When A Man Loves a Woman” earned him his first of his two Grammy awards. In addition to always being on the prowl for new material — or old material that he can adapt into a new sound — Bolton enjoys collaborating with an interesting crosssection of musicians and singers. Over the years, he’s written for, recorded or performed with artists ranging from opera greats like Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo, Ray Charles, Céline Dion, BB King and Wynonna Judd. Now Bolton has his sights set on teaming with The Roots. Bolton was supposed to perform a song or two with the band when he appeared on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon a few weeks ago. Instead, Bolton and The Roots hit it off so well he ended up sitting in with them through the entire TV show. “I’ve been wanting to go and do anything with those guys,” Bolton said of the Philadelphia-based band. “We’re talking about doing some recording.” ■

his Saturday, March 2, the Atlantic City Weekly Health, Wellness and Fitness Expo returns to the Hamilton Mall from 10am to 5pm. The expo is free and open to the public. ew bands in the modern rock scene have the kind of enduring legacy that Deftones have cultivated over the past 17 years. Touring in support of its new album ‘Koi No Yokan,’ it is the most mature and cohesive record the band has ever recorded. This album is a woven tapestry that takes the most stirring elements of the band’s previous work and breathes into it new life and urgency that begs to be listened to as a complete piece. Each track flows into the next like a river — crashing, falling, rushing, cascading and slowing at a pace that lends itself to its neighboring tracks and compliments them naturally. — Craig Billow

Gospel musical ‘When the Child Cries’ being presented as a Hurricane Sandy benefit at Resorts By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com

facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly

Leroy A. “Lee” Harris

‘When the Child Cries’ will make history as the first gospel musical to be presented at a casino in Atlantic City. Harris, a retired U.S. Marine officer who also served in the Navy and was a boxing trainer at one point in his career, has been producing his show continuously for the last three years. “I am so amazed, humbled, and encouraged by the national attention that we are experiencing and the messages of encouragement from clergy, legendary gospel greats, the thousands of people who have come out to see the production, and those who have reached out to me through the

social media. “I am bringing the full play to Atlantic City to also show that the destination is OK. The Boardwalk and the city have recovered from Sandy and we will bring visitors in to see for themselves. It’s an outstanding opportunity to raise funds for those in the region that are still recuperating and need the additional funding to get back on their feet. Many people surrounding the casinos are still living in horrible conditions. It is our duty to try to help them.”

Everyone can contribute to this cause either by attending the show or even if you can’t make it to the show, you can donate a ticket that will be given to a Hurricane Sandy victim. Purchase a ticket via Ticketmaster then call 856-562-0964 and give the confirmation receipt number you are given so that that ticket can be assigned to a Hurricane Sandy victim. The five-act play is being presented at the beginning of Women’s History Month. The play originated from Lee’s award winning poem on family and social issues facing young mothers. The show is about salvation and is filled with inspirational gospel singers and songs. ■ see more online @

onths after Hurricane Sandy hit our region, many people are still suffering from the effects. Some displaced families are still living in hotel rooms without a permanent home and the money to help them is running low. Seeing this tragedy unfolding on a news report, Glassboro, N.J., resident Leroy A. “Lee” Harris wanted to help by presenting his acclaimed gospel musical, When the Child Cries, as a benefit. After contacting Atlantic City Mayor Lorenzo Langford, and working with an area church group, When the Child Cries will make history as the first gospel musical to be presented in any casino in A.C. when it is performed at Resorts Friday and Saturday, March 1-2. Proceeds from the two performances will go directly to the American Red Cross Superstorm Sandy Relief Fund. Harris’ production company is financing the event and Resorts is donating the use of the Superstar Theater. “I was watching the news showing this lady with four kids whose FEMA money was running out so they had to leave their motel and had nowhere to go,” Harris tells AC Weekly. “And I remembered Springsteen and Bon Jovi getting together [for a Superstorm Sandy benefit] and thought about doing my show to help. “So I called the mayor’s office and told him I wanted to do this, that I didn’t want any city resources, I just wanted help contacting the proper organizations. The mayor’s office got me in contact with the Red Cross and they were happy to accept my donation and I was also put in contact with the Atlantic City Alliance, representatives from Resorts and a local church group that represents 60 churches in the area. The churches are going to participate in the event. We use real pastors in the play in the last act and many of them will be onstage.”

nce again, greetings and salutations. And we’re about to fling into spring. Would you believe that March is here? And to kick it off, yours truly and the Geator Gold guys and gals are heading south for our annual Philly-Jersey Shore get-together at the Seminole Hard Rock in Hollywood, Fla. It’s next Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, March 7-9. And not only the Geator but my good friend Pinky Kravitz and the Longport Media guys and gals will be joining us. So if you want to rock the boat, get afloat and make it to the Florida coast. But now, in honor of the Oscars, we’ve got a few movie questions — so let’s ask the Geator. Read an article about some of the new members of the Motion Picture Academy (Tom Berenger, Terrence Malick, Stephen King, Matthew McConaughy). What does it take to become a member of the Academy and who gets to go to the Oscars? — Barry, Ventnor City Membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is just like the Friars Club (of which yours truly is a member). It’s invitation only — your membership must be proposed by a current member of the Academy. All Oscar nominees are automatically considered for membership, but not all are approved by the Academy’s Board of Governors for membership. And any member can buy a ticket to the Academy Awards show, but tickets are tightly controlled and end up going to the current nominees, their guests, and highly placed Hollywood executives. What happened with the movie biography

The memorial/Monkees convention will take place in N.J. of Liberace? You reported on it a while ago and we thought it would be out by now. Thanks! — The Glassboro girls You’re talking about Behind the Candelabra, an HBO movie starring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, with Debbie Reynolds as Liberace’s mom and a score by Marvin Hamlisch. Filming had to be delayed in 2010 while Michael Douglas underwent treatment for cancer, but according to HBO, it will be out in the next couple of months. And speaking of HBO, their drama about the murder trial of Phil Spector starring Al Pacino and Helen Mirren premieres March 24. I was just watching The Monkees on TV. We were wondering, are the rest of band members still alive? — Marian Palma Wilson, Somers Point Peter Tork, Mickey Dolenz and Mike Nesmith are all alive and well [band member Davy Jones passed away Feb. 29, 2012] and still very active on tour, in the studio and behind the camera, and recently completed their first U.S. tour since 1971. And this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, March 1-3, Peter and Mickey, along with David Cassidy and many other artists, will be appearing along with yours truly at the first Davy Jones Memorial Monkees Convention, and it’s right here in the Garden State. For tickets and info, call 1-866-MONKEES or visit monkeeconvention.com. ■

2013 Atlantic City Restaurant Week Nearly 80 restaurants in Atlantic County are offering dining deals for the fifth annual culinary bonanza March 3-9. By Frank Gabriel • feedback@acweekly.com

32

FEBRUARY 28 - MARCH 6, 2013 • ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY

T

he 2013 edition of Atlantic City’s Restaurant Week (March 3-9), celebrating its wood anniversary at five years, is singular for several reasons. This year 79 restaurants throughout Atlantic County — not just Atlantic City — will participate, offering a three-course evening meal for $33.13. Thirty-four of those eateries also serve similar lunches for $15.13. There are quite a few new spots to explore — most notably many of Revel’s food providers — and we love the creativity being shown by chefs. The most significant difference this year remains our regional restaurant industry’s continued recovery from October’s Sandy-related chaos. For many operators, Restaurant Week provides an initial opportunity to begin rebooting their businesses. That sense of urgency is further heightened by the fact that Easter — one of the most popular days of the year for dining out — falls early this year, on Sunday, March 31. So in essence, the catalyst to Atlantic City’s tourist season — at least where restaurants are concerned — begins during Atlantic City Restaurant Week, slated this year for March 3-9. For complete info, particularly for restaurant business hours, we encourage you to check out Web site acrestaurantweek.com, provided by the Atlantic City Convention & Visitors Bureau. This year’s list of recommendations begins with lunch at Margate’s Bocca. Opened last fall, we’ve been extremely pleased during multiple visits with all aspects of this enterprise. Try a starter

facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly

The most significant difference this year remains our regional restaurant industry’s continued recovery from Sandy. of coal-fired Thai chile wings, then big plates like ricotta ravioli in sirloin/short rib Bolognese sauce or a black and blue certified Angus beef burger topped with gorgonzola candied walnut slaw on a brioche bun. A couple more worthy spots are a few miles to the north, Girasole at the base of the Ocean Club Condos, and Harry’s Bar and Grill at Bally’s (both in Atlantic City). Each presents a superb daytime locale. Girasole’s bright room elevated just above bustling Pacific Avenue and Harry’s gazing from one of the Boardwalk’s coolest spots, the elegant Dennis Hotel Courtyard. For sheer variety, Girasole’s bill of fare stands out. Choose from almost a dozen appetizers like pasta fagioli, calamari baked in tomato sauce, or a trio each of carpaccios and pizzas. Ten entrees include beef braciola, fritto misto or a choice of multiple pastas. We especially like the sound of rigatoni Girasole, a take on classic amatriciana, with pancetta, onions, pecorino, fresh grape tomato and chiles or bow-tie pasta with smoked salmon, light tomato sauce and a touch of cream. Harry’s is strategically positioned just a few hundred yards away from the beach and ocean. Sample a trio of oysters, clam

chowder or house salad and then move on to a traditional Jersey shore favorite, the chicken salad and fried oyster platter. Other options include an arugula salad with grilled salmon or an excellent pulled pork sandwich with onion straws, slaw and fries. Two other fine A.C. lunching spots are mainstays the Knife and Fork and Atlantic City Bar & Grill. At the former, a midday meal will only be served once — Friday, March 8. There is something very magical about dining here during daylight. Shafts of sun break through the lounge’s antique glass windows, reminding one of Atlantic City long ago. Food does that heritage justice, soups like corn-andcrab chowder or Tuscan three-bean soup, or salad featuring shrimp, bacon, gorgonzola, onion and house steak sauce. Large plates offer a shrimp-chorizo jambalaya, sliced filet mignon with arugula, cherry tomatoes, shaved parmesan and citrus vinaigrette or spice-rubbed salmon sided by roasted corn salsa and tomatillo relish. At A.C. Bar & Grill, start with either lobster bisque or Maryland crab soup and then sample a most unusual combination, their signature fish wrap. It features grilled sea bass, sauteed spinach, red onions and toma-

toes in chipotle sauce served with sweet potato fries. Down Pacific Avenue, Showboat’s Crossroads at the House of Blues — conceptualized by Nuevo Latino guru and Food Network talking head, Aaron Sanchez — looks to have a great menu. Start with HOB salad, field greens, grape tomatoes, crumbled feta and pecans, at lunch or dinner. Evening entrees of chipotle-glazed citrus chicken and creamed-corn succotash, southern shrimp-and-grits or chili braised short ribs paired with andouille corn pudding reiterate the restaurant’s culinary point of view. One of our favorite regional desserts, their sticky toffee pudding, is available lunch and dinner. At Revel’s Central Michel Richard, commence your “dejeuner” (midday meal) at this bistro with French onion soup, mixed green salad or an authentic Parisian specialty, bacon and onion tart. Move on to lemony chicken schnitzel, mussels in white wine and garlic or the egg-battered-andgrilled sandwich, Croque Madame. At dinner, apps like mussel chowder, iceberg and bleu cheese salad or mushroom pearl risotto are exceptional. Main courses include pecan-crusted salmon, butternut squash and Brussels sprouts, hangar steak au poivre with onion carbonara and rotisserie chicken accompanied by roasted potatoes. And do not miss Michel’s chocolate bar dessert. Evening casino opportunities are highlighted by a chance to check out A.C.’s newest and already one of its most accomplished steak houses, Robert’s at the Taj Mahal. Sleek and urbane, the New York City transplant opened last autumn to rave reviews and chef Will Savarese’s cuisine is seriously polished. Their Restaurant Week menu, brief at only six items, remains thoughtful. Apps are a chilled spring pea soup with lobster salmon sausage or young spinach ricotta ravioli in citrus brown butter and toasted walnuts. Entrees offer herb and caper crusted salmon, braised endive, fingerling potatoes, spinach and sauce verjus or dry aged N.Y. strip with rosti potato and Robert’s signature sauce. Desserts, spectacular on two earlier visits, are chocolate pudding with vanilla bean whipped cream and chocolate tuile or a vanilla bean panna cotta with roasted pineapple carpaccio and raspberry tuile. At Borgata’s Izakaya, one of A.C.’s most theatrical venues, Michael Schulson’s charges will present starters chicken robatayaki, with sage and spicy mustard, a gingerdressed Japanese green salad with carrot and radish, pork buns, lettuce, spicy sauce and pickled cucumber or a spicy tuna cracker with scallion, jalapeno and nori. Main courses like sweet crispy shrimp, glazed Atlantic salmon, Peking duck breast with hoisin caramel, scallion and pickled cucumber or a sushi roll sampler — crispy lobster, dragon, crab California, shrimp tempura, salmon avocado — all demonstrate the broad, multifaceted skill sets of this eatery’s CONTINUED ON PG. 34

>> CONTINUED FROM PG. 32 diverse stations. Sage restaurant in Ventnor is one of Absecon Island’s best BYOBs, where chef/ owner Lisa Savage channels a creative Restaurant Week lineup. Begin with crispy fried artichoke hearts, tempura oysters on seaweed salad, garlic shrimp and chorizo or the Sage Salad (spring mix, feta, pignoli nuts, balsamic vinaigrette) Entrees include jumbo pan-seared scallops atop sautéed Brussels sprout shavings and shitake mushrooms in an apple cider reduction with truffled potato croquettes, half a roasted duck in sun-dried cherry sauce with chive mashed potatoes or maple-glazed pork chop, red cabbage and apple agrodolce plus cheddar mashed potatoes. We can’t think of many areas more affected by Sandy than the Amherst Avenue strip of restaurants and nightclubs in Margate. Check out Sofia for upscale Greek fare, a bit of an anomaly locally. Dinner features genuine ethnic specialties like spanakopita, made of spinach, leek and feta pie baked in phyllo; filet Athena, braised beef medallions with mushrooms and caramelized onions, fingerling potatoes and Brussels sprouts; yiouvetsi, braised lamb shank with orzo, spinach, lamb demi, char-grilled fillet of bream sided by rice pilafi, horta greens and “latholemono” (aromatics); or seafood plaki, Chilean sea bass, jumbo shrimp, kalamata olives, feta cheese, potatoes, baked in ouzo tomato sauce in a terracotta pot. There are so many other exciting options, but we’ll use our remaining space to acknowledge some individual dishes that caught our eye. Interview with Miss America CEO Art McMaster By Donald B. Kravitz • feedback@acweekly.com

door of the MAO headquarters. “Sam Haskell [chairman of the MAO board] flew in [from out of state] for the meeting and we sat around with her for an hour or two and talked about the pageant and bringing it back [to Atlantic City], said McMaster. “At that point we laid it out as to what we thought it would take to bring the pageant back here. We told her, ‘if they would like to submit a proposal we would be open to that.’ We were very honest with her and we said we are happy in Las Vegas, they treat us very well, but at the same time this had been our home and if you would like to submit a proposal then we would consider coming home. And from that point, it just took off. When I asked McMaster how the MAO board responded to the idea of returning to AC, McMaster replied, You know, like any board, they knew we had an existing contract with Las Vegas who wanted to extend the contract, but at the same time Atlantic City came in with a proposal and the board felt they had a fiduciary responsibility to consider all proposals. In addition, McMaster said, “The one thing we and the board were not going to do is leverage one against the other. We were looking at both sites as stand alone proposals. The board really did look at those proposals independently. Now that the decision has been made for the pageant to return to Atlantic City, what does the organization see as the most important issues that it needs to resolve? “Well, foremost is locking in the date, said McMaster, whose spokesperson, as of

ith the recent announcement that the Miss America Pageant and Parade is returning to Atlantic City in September, I wanted to find out what lies ahead for the “new Miss America Pageant. On Tuesday, Feb. 19, the Miss America Organization, stationed in Linwood, Atlantic County, opened its doors to me so I could interview Art McMaster, president and CEO of the organization. The decision to have the pageant return to Atlantic City was not an easy choice and until the week before Christmas 2012, it was not even a consideration. “I was at our company Christmas luncheon on Friday, Dec. 21, when my cell phone went off and it was the lieutenant governor and secretary of state of New Jersey Kim Guadagno, said McMaster. “That is how this move started. The lieutenant governor said, ‘Art, I hope you don’t mind but I tracked your number down and I understand your contract is up in Las Vegas and you’re getting ready to renew and we would like to compete for that, so before you sign we would like to make an offer if you are OK with that.’ McMaster, who was caught off guard, said he replied, “If you look at the calendar, next week is Christmas week and the day after [is] New Year’s [and then] we all leave for the pageant, so this is awful fast. The lieutenant governor then asked if “we were in the office next week and I replied we are for three days, recalled McMaster. “To which she commented, ‘I’ll be there.’ According to McMaster, it was Dec. 27, 2012, when Guadagno’s car rolled up to the

Art McMaster

Feb. 27, said there is no date to announce yet other than it will be in September. “And then we have to lock in the hotels. The pageant will draw thousands of people from all over the country as we now have 53 contestants. Those thousands of people will be coming to town looking for rooms. With regard to when the dates will be locked in, McMaster said, “We will have it locked in by the end of February 2013. Much of the success of the Miss America Pageant while it was held in A.C. had a lot to do with the large number of volunteers that participated as members of the Press Committee, hostesses or chaperons and in many other positions. Does McMaster anticipate reaching out to the volunteers and getting them involved once again? “The answer to that question about will we need volunteers again, absolutely, positively yes! said McMaster.

41

“However, will it be exactly as it was before? I don’t think so. I think this will give us an opportunity as it did when we went to Las Vegas to examine and rethink how we did our operation. When we were here we had many groups who had been doing their thing for many years. When we got to Vegas we did not have those groups and we had to start from ground zero. We were in a new city, new venue and [with] new volunteers. I think we learned a lot and I am sure we are going to apply what we learned there to how we operate in Atlantic City. Obviously we will have to adjust how we did business in Las Vegas here in Atlantic City as Atlantic City is so much bigger and, yes, we will need volunteers and we will find a middle of the road between Las Vegas and the way we used to do business in A.C.â€? The dates, said McMaster, are being determined by the MAO, ABC and the City of Atlantic City. “It’s a three way arrangement,â€? said McMaster. “We all have to agree on the date. We are looking toward the first half of September as the date for the pageant.â€? McMaster did apprise me, however, of a very interesting fact. “I am not so sure the pageant will even be on Saturday night anymore,â€? he said. “ABC has Saturday night football so it may not even be on Saturday night.â€? Could it be held on Sunday evening? “We do not know, we will see,â€? said McMaster. “Maybe Friday night, maybe Sunday night. In any event ABC promised us an answer by the end of February.â€? Little Saigon a Story of Success Lien Pham epitomizes the adage that through hard work and dedication, anyone can live the American dream. Pham immigrated to the United States shortly after the end of the Vietnam War in the 1970s, taking up the trade of casino dealer when gambling was legalized in Atlantic City in 1978. On the advice of friends impressed by her cooking skills. Pham opened Little Saigon on a corner of Artic Avenue in A.C. in 1990, and the small restaurant earned the muchdeserved reputation as a gem among specialized, ethnic dining establishments. Blending Vietnamese and Chinese influence, Little Saigon offers the freshest appetizers, soups, noodle dishes and entrees (including vegetarian choices along with chicken, beef, pork and seafood) in the city. Pham personally selects

the meats, poultry, seafood and vegetables used in the preparation of all menu offerings, which are always cooked to order. The prestigious Zagat survey gave Little Saigon its highest rating, five stars, and service has been hailed as quick and friendly in a dining room that seats about 40 people. So if you have a hankering for authentic Asian cuisine, visit Little Saigon at the site and hours listed below.

Feel the ‘Burn’

T

A heartfelt documentary about Detroit firefighters plays locally for limited time; plus an Oscars recap. By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com

FEBRUARY 28 - MARCH 6, 2013 • ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY

A

fter watching the documentary Burn, about firefighters in Detroit, I imagined what those firefighters must feel if they’ve watched the NBC series Chicago Fire, with its pristine fire trucks and state-of-the-art equipment. The real deal firemen in Detroit are faced with one of the highest arson rates in the world and 80,000 abandoned structures that are essentially fires waiting to happen. And they must face the alarm bell with old, worn out equipment, held together with “bubble gum” as one firemen calls it in an impoverished city that another fireman notes, “Looks like it was hit by Katrina but without the hurricane.” Los Angeles, a city of 4 million people, sees 11 structure fires per day. Detroit, with 713,000 residents, has 30 structure fires a day and 95 percent of them are caused by arson. That so many of the fires are arson begs the question: Why do these firefighters put their lives on the line, especially when you factor in mediocre pay (and despite being in a union, no raises the past decade), old equipment and the dangers inherent in the job? What you find out is that they love their work despite the obstacles and the understanding that things aren’t getting better and aren’t likely to change. What you take away from Burn as you hear the heartbreaking stories of paralyzed former fireman Doogie Milewski, and

facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly

The real deal firemen in Detroit are faced with one of the highest arson rates in the world and 80,000 abandoned structures that are essentially fires waiting to happen. 33-year veteran Dave Parnell, who loses the love of his life just as he is ready to retire, is that they can’t imagine doing anything else. We also learn that the Detroit Fire Department is unique in that instead of fighting a fire from the outside in, they fight fires from the inside out. They kick down the front door and go barreling in. They do this to save time, despite being so much more dangerous. Fighting a typical house fire from the outside takes about three hours. An interior attack can knock down the same fire in about 45 minutes. With the number of fire calls they get, the DFD need to be ready to roll again as quickly as possible. The conclusion one makes is that these guys are crazy, the kind of crazy — a combination of fearlessness, compassion and determination — that makes this world a better place and is exceedingly rare in today’s “me-first” world.

Winner of the audience award at the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival, Burn was produced and directed by Tom Putnam and Brenna Sanchez, with actor and star of Rescue Me, Denis Leary, as an executive producer. Burn has been traveling around the country with a portion of the tickets sales going to the Leary Firefighters Foundation to purchase much-needed gear for the Detroit firefighters. The film will play at the Towne 16 on March 4-5 at 7:30pm. Tickets are $15 purchased on-line (detroitfirefilm.org/events/) and $20 at the door. n

OSCARS WRAP-UP

here was some history made at the 2013 Academy Awards and if Captain Kirk comes back from the future with an Oscar headline regarding host Seth MacFarlane, it will read: “He didn’t suck.” This was an Oscar evening that passed the good vibrations around in an appropriate manner. Argo won best picture to help Ben Affleck feel better for not being nominated for best director. Daniel Day-Lewis was the history maker, becoming the first actor to win three best actor Academy Awards for his performance in Lincoln. Jennifer Lawrence won best actress for Silver Linings Playbook and tripped on her long dress. Christoph Waltz was shocked (and so was everyone else) when he won for supporting actor over frontrunners Tommy Lee Jones and Robert De Niro, and Anne Hathaway said her dream came true when she won best supporting actor. Argo and Les Misérables with three awards each, and Life of Pi with four, were the big winners in total awards. Pi rightly won for its innovative visual style, winning for best director (Ang Lee), for cinematography, visual effects and film score. Lincoln, leading the nominations with 12, only took home one, for production design. Also in the category of a mild surprise, an elated Quentin Tarantino took the best original screenplay win for Django Unchained. On a night when Oscar saluted music in the movies and the 50th anniversary of James Bond, the performance highlights were Dame Shirley Bassey belting out the theme from Goldfinger, and Barbra Streisand remembering the late Marvin Hamlisch with a heartfelt rendition of “The Way We Were” during the “In Memoriam” sequence. As for MacFarlane, he didn’t hit a home run, but it was a solid double in the gap. He was the smart ass we expected, but at least the jokes were funny. I enjoyed “Captain Kirk” (William Shatner) telling MacFarlane he ruined the Oscars — with the future headlines to prove it — to kick off the evening. As for the rest of the show, it was nice to find out that Channing Tatum can dance with his clothes on as he did a Dancing With the Stars audition with Charlize Theron. There were a few technical glitches (when you can’t hear Adele sing over the orchestra it is a sound mixing problem), and the Jaws-theme to hurry up the speeches was only funny the first few times. As Oscar shows go it was fine, but not outstanding. (For a complete list of winners go to atlanticcityweekly.com) n see more online @
