Revel Restaurants Preview T By David J. Spatz

o the casual observer, chef and restaurateur Robert Wiedmaier is simply opening a branch of his popular Mussel bar in bethesda, Md. next month when revel debuts atlantic city’s first new casino in nine years. close, but not entirely accurate. think bigger, the chef says. “the Mussel bar [at revel] is gonna be on steroids,” he tells Atlantic City Weekly. “It isn’t going to be like the one we have in [bethesda]. It’s going to be a whole stimulation package when you go there.” Wiedmaier, who owns four restaurants in and around Washington, D.c., is just one of an all-star team of chefs revel has recruited to operate 14 food outlets in the $2.4 billion resort. he joined four of his culinary colleagues recently at a restaurant preview party presented by revel in New York city. the Mussel bar at revel will be the first dining room Wiedmaier’s opened outside his home base, and it will be like nothing he’s tackled in the past. entertainment will be a key ingredient in the restaurant, he explains, and the room will feature a live stage. beer will also hold a place of honor in the Mussel bar. “We have a beer wall that’s going to house 200 belgian beers,” he says. Not to worry, beer fans; american brands will also be offered. Wiedmaier, 51, exudes a vibrant and animated personality when talking about his newest challenge. he admitts he was initially skeptical about opening an atlantic city dining room when revel’s restaurant recruiters approached him four years ago. “I was like, ‘atlantic city? I haven’t been there in years,’” he says. but then he visited the town and saw that things had changed since his last visit. and when he saw the plans for revel, described by ceo Kevin DeSanctis as a luxury cruise ship that never leaves the dock, he quickly booked passage. Wiedmaier, whose father is from belgium, describes his newest restaurant as a “belgian roadhouse” where the food and entertainment — plus an open kitchen loaded with video cameras so guests can see chefs preparing their meals — combine to form a complete entertainment experience. although the menu offers nine different mussel dishes — the spicy thai curry mussels are Wiedmaier’s favorite — the room will offer everything from roasted whole sea bass to oysters to prime rib and porterhouse steak. Wiedmaier’s room won’t be the only place to grab a steak at revel. chef Marc Forgione, one of revel’s two tv food Network “Iron chefs” (Philly-based Jose Garces is the other) will be opening Like us:

american cut, which he described as his spin on a “classic steakhouse.” Just 33, forgione has helped open many restaurants since launching his kitchen career, but this will be his first venture into the gaming world. “I’ve never opened a restaurant inside of a casino or a resort that’s opening at the same time,” says forgione, the 2010 winner of the Next Iron Chef reality series. “It’s insane. I can’t even wrap my head around it.” Music will also be an important part of his dining room. the same DJ who programs the play lists for his New York city restaurant will create the soundtrack for his revel dining room. forgione is such a fan of classic rock that he’s expressed interest in trying his hand at being a radio DJ. the opportunity already awaits him in atlantic city. “We’d love to have Marc forgione as a guest DJ, and we’ve already extended him an invitation to sit in whenever he wants,” says Dave Coskey, president of longport Media, which owns five area radio stations, including classic rock legacy station WMGM 103.7. “Who knows where that could lead?” coskey adds. Meanwhile, chef Alain Allegretti, whose culinary career took root on the french riviera next to the Mediterranean sea, will add a fresh, healthy and flavorful flair to revel. his restaurant, azure, will specialize in seafood. Just don’t confuse his menu with “Mediterranean cuisine,” allegretti says. “I cannot stand that [phrase],” he says. “french riviera sounds much more sexy to me.” In spite of his french background and training, allegretti says guests won’t see fancy dishes whose names they can’t pronounce, let alone enjoy. “I don’t want people to be afraid of coming to my restaurant and think I’m a fancy fine-dining chef and think my restaurant is not for them,” the 42-year-old chef says. “My restaurant is for everyone.” Guests at azure will have a commanding view of the ocean and see where their dinner may have once been swimming, he adds. “You don’t see any cows from the window, that’s for sure,” he says with a laugh. n

This infectious and utterly hip new tune from the multi-talented multi-instrumentalist Tamara deMent (also a contributing writer for AC Weekly) not only shows off the Atlantic City-area resident’s skill as a singer and songwriter, but also her passion for creating and sculpting beauty. Just released, the song, which includes percussionist Michael Hoebler of Atlantic City and guitarist Mark DeVaul of Cape May Court House, is already on regular rotation on Stockton’s WLFR. The song, says deMent, “is the result of something truly organic. It was recorded at home on the fly with beautiful, vintage equipment. It’s harmonically simple, but features some interesting choices in instrumentation; violin, orchestra bells, and upright bass. I hope many people enjoy it.” For links and to listen to the song, visit —JS acweekly.com.

im Fowler, owner oF St. George’s Pub in Brigantine, and Jorge Penagos, his head chef, combine for more years working in the hospitality industry than the average life expectancy, and that’s a selling point Fowler seems most proud of. He’s been successful by recognizing quality, identifying what people want most, surrounding himself with talent and work ethics that meet his high standards, and giving back to a community that backs up his business ventures. Fowler’s history in hospitality is family rooted, and predates by a long stretch his building, managing, co-owning and owning outright St. George’s Pub, which debuted in 1991 and is among the longest-tenured residents — if not the longest — in the Brigantine towne Center. recently, when local banks balked at financing due to a down economy, and bureaucratic red tape threatened an expansion project that would double St. George’s seating capacity and give it a state-of-the-art kitchen, Fowler tracked down a friend in financing who helped get the $300,000 job done. A new menu was brought in by Penagos, a master chef by anyone’s standards who’s created the kind of delicacies you might not expect to find in such an unassuming establishment. lately St. George’s has also bolstered its entertainment slate. Currently a revolving list of the area’s top local entertainers performs in the main bar area every Friday night, starting with mellow classics around 6pm that blend well with the dinner crowd, then morphing into a more nightlife-ish feel later in the evening. last Friday (march 2) it was Jesse Boyington, a singer/acoustic guitarist who’s been popular in the area for over 30 years, and this Friday (march 9), songstress extraordinaire Patty Blee returns to perform in the town in which she was raised. “the entertainment has gotten better and better — it’s gone off the chart,” says Fowler, a charter-boat captain on the side whose fresh-caught tuna often ends up in Penagos’ culinary creations. “this Friday night is Patty Blee, a local girl from Brigantine who’s really made a name for herself [having just released her third CD, From the Inside] and has opened for some big-time headliners [among them martina mcBride, Pat Benatar, Boz Scaggs, Gregg Allman, Soozie tyrell and others]. Like us:

facebook.com/ACWeekly

Patty Blee we’re really looking forward to that, and we’ve got her booked for several other nights down the road along with Brian Smallwood [march 16], mike lupis [march 23] and Jeff Hornberger [march 30].” St. George’s does a Quizzo night every wednesday (starting 9pm), and while live music is currently contained mainly to Friday nights, that may be expanded to other nights during the busier summer months, or for certain special events. Fowler and his wife, Shirley, are actively involved in fishing tournaments that raise money for cancer research, such as the Greater Atlantic Bluefish tournament (celebrating 25 years on June 2), and the ladies invitational Bluefish tournament (28th year, June 16), the latter of which has seen Fowler’s 35-foot Carolina Classic Taildancer compete in every one of the first 27 tournaments. on Saturday, march 17, St. George’s will host a St. Patrick’s Day bash with live bagpipers, and on Saturday, march 31, a full band will be on hand to celebrate Brian Smallwood’s birthday. Performing in that group will be guitarist and longtime St. George’s pub manager Paul Strong, who says bringing regular live music back to the pub has been very well received so far. “we’ve had some really good crowds,” says Strong. “A few might have been here anyway, but it’s definitely helped to bring out some people who just enjoy live entertainment. it’s just been something nice to be able to provide for our clientele.” n

T

he World SerieS of Poker Circuit events are off to a good start at Caesars and may even be proving that other casino properties can compete with the Borgata at the poker table. The first event of the circuit was held March 1 — a $300 + $45 No limit tournament that attracted 667 players and posted a prize pool of $194,097. That’s on par with last year’s opener and while not as impressive as some stops on the circuit, for a Thursday in early March, it was a decent field. Michael McGuinness, of Toms river, won the event. McGuinness has a few cashes on his record over the last 10 years or so (including an about $20k cash at the harrah’s resort circuit events in december 2010), but this $39,790 win is by far his best to date. Most notable about the win — aside from the fact that McGuinness fought his way back from being short-stacked at the final table — was that McGuinness played a quiet man’s game at a boisterous final table that saw a lot of conversation, jokes, and reportedly, more than a little drinking. But McGuinness, a 43-year-old retired police officer, kept his head down, plowed through the field and ended up with just under $40k. There’s probably a lesson there. event two of the circuit events put up an even more impressive start. Again a $300 + $45 No limit tournament, but with a better friday start date, the event drew 887 players, which may turn out to be the biggest field of the entire circuit events. The winner was Sarah dygert, a 23-yearold software developer from Alfred, N.Y., who won $50,333. it’s always great to see a female player break through and dygert did it in dominant fashion, holding a chip lead through the final tables and finishing on top after a 16-hour session. Still, dygert didn’t come from nowhere. Though only a “part-time” player, she had a pretty successful online career and has better than $100,000 in live tournament winnings. So all in all, that was a nice start to the circuit events. Then came Sunday. The circuit events presented a $500 + $55 event that attracted about 253 players. for that kind of a buy-in, that’s not bad. At the same time, the Borgata presentLike us:

ed a $1,500 + $150, $500,000 guaranteed deepstack tournament. That’s a big buy-in and it drew 308 players. But that didn’t cover the casino’s guarantee, and the Borgata had to kick in close to $40k. The numbers weren’t exactly off for Borgata — in fact, a deepstack they offered last March matched the turnout exactly — but you have to figure the Borgata likes to cover its guarantees without having to kick in cash. So did the circuit make a difference? Was the chilly late-winter weather a factor? did Borgata simply set the guarantee too high? (Many of their deepstack events are guaranteed for $300k.) Who can say? But we do know one thing. There was plenty of action to choose from for your typical A.C. grinder last weekend. This weekend is no different as the WSoP Circuit offers up a $1,000 + $80 No limit tournament on friday (March 9) and starts its $1,500 + $100 championship event on Saturday (March 10). The championship event has two opening sessions at 11am and 7pm under the double play system (those busting out in the first session can re-buy in the second session). in some other news, Atlantic City’s badbeat jackpots continue to pay out some big bucks. The harrah’s combined bad-beat jackpot hit Saturday (March 3) morning for $281,037. That’s less than a month since it last hit for $291,000 The minimum hand for the jackpot was set at four sevens (harrah’s lowers the minimum a notch every Wednesday if there has been no hits). Names weren’t released, but the winning bad-beat hand (meaning it actually lost) was quad nines, which fell to a spade straight flush, which ran eight to the queen. The bad-beat winner received $84,774, the hand winner won $56,673 and 297 players at Caesars entertainment properties (Caesars, harrah’s, Bally’s, Showboat) won $470 each. There was also a bad-beat jackpot hit at the Taj Mahal on leap Year day, feb. 29. The jackpot hit for better than $151,000. david Nicholas, of Whiting N.J., won $75,840.50 when his four jacks lost to franklin Cedero’s four aces. The remaining six players at the table won $6,320. on feb. 26, two bad-beat jackpot hits at the Borgata paid out more than $636,000. n

Gigantic portions, impressive variety and cool 24-hour vibe at new Sammy D’s. By Frank Gabriel

facile little handle with which to pop off the spicy meat. call it Buffalo wings for dummies, this technique alleviates the inherent messiness of that latter-day american obsession. another of the chef’s faves — denoted on the menu by his amusing caricature — chicken parm a la mama Demarco, arrived on a plate the size of a small wheelbarrow. oK, so we exaggerate a bit. But not much. The pounded cutlet of poultry was indeed the size of a catcher’s mitt, but one helluva lot more tender. In fact, cutting into the firm, white meat, we couldn’t help but marvel at the attention to detail given this fairly typical Ital-amer item.

as an aside, one Italian dude to another, if you’re gonna name a dish after your momma it better be this good. or else you’re in trouble when you get home. Uniformly flat, the meat had been well handled so that the flesh was never torn. The breast, layered with cheese, was supple enough to eliminate the need for a knife. a nice turban of linguine and two thick slices of garlic bread completed the entrée. my choice, bistro standard steak frites, brought a nicely butchered cut of beef, marbled but devoid of any extraneous fat. Thin-cut fries, made in house judging from their irregular shapes and sizes, were crisp and piled high. covered with what

the menu described as an aioli — essentially mediterranean garlic mayo — the blend ate more like a light cheese sauce. from a separate list of seven items under the label “sammy’s Wok shop” we selected vegetable lo mein as one side dish. The abundant portion of springy noodles, julienned carrots, peppers and mushrooms was tasty and healthful, but would have benefited from the addition of bit more brown sauce. our other option, pretzel-crusted mac and cheese, was just superb. crunchy atop, its inner folds contained perfectly chewy pasta swimming in divine béchamel. Those pretzels added more than just texture; their salt helped balance the natural dairy sweetness. Which brings us to dessert. here, there are two options, “Big cakes” or “Little Pies.” from the latter, we opted for a smith Island cake, loaded with peanut butter and chocolate easily portioned enough for two very hungry people. The former, intentionally mischaracterized, were not so “little” at all. Instead, both Boston and banana cream versions arrived in their own personal baking dishes, three inches or so thick with mountains of fresh whipped cream. We can’t close without telling you how much we enjoyed the overall feeling and vibe here. Described on harrah’s Web site as a “retro coffee shop on steroids” sammy D’s is fun, extremely well managed and capable of producing head-turning plates of food. a welcome addition to atlantic city’s dining scene. n

am Demarco, chef of harrah’s new 24-hour eatery sammy D’s, doesn’t seem to want anyone leaving his restaurant hungry. Judging from the sheer volume of food his high-energy concept churned out during a recent visit, no one ever will. start with this, the room itself is equally huge, with space for over four hundred. It stretches to include a bar and lounge, several separate dining sections and a really happening-looking lunch counter on the farthest wall. arcing around the exterior of harrah’s Pool complex, sammy D’s fits perfectly with the overall motif of casual relaxation. The menu, like everything else here, is bigger than life. With separate lists for breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner and late night, variety rules. We began with two chef’s signature apps, recommended by our server. Philly cheesesteak dumplings were five outsized (surprise) half-moons of neatly folded chinese-style pastry. Their exteriors were just a bit browned, from the heat of a sauté pan, and darned inviting. once opened an alluring mix of beef and provolone cheese appeared. We loved the restraint shown too. excessive cheese would have resulted in a gooey, sticky mess. Instead, the dumpling itself, firmly constructed yet tender, stood out. Plated atop kicky sriracha ketchup and tiny rounds of hot pepper, this is a starter worth hanging your toque on. our other choice, lollipop Buffalo wings, brought a baker’s dozen chicken drums. The twist here is that the top of the bone was cleaned — “frenched” were these lamb chops — providing a neat,

Jazz @ the Point Festival

Now in its 15th year, the multi-day fest attracts some of the biggest names in the genre, and raises thousands of dollars for Somers Point public schools. By Ray Schweibert

edication to his craft earned Mulgrew Miller the opportunity to perform at a young age under some of the greatest and most influential jazz musicians in history. now Miller is the mentor and, as one of the genre’s most respected and sought-after jazz pianists, is helping to pave the way for younger musicians in both the classroom and professional settings. the Mulgrew Miller trio is one of this year’s headlining acts at the 15th annual somers Point Jazz society Jazz @ the Point festival, which runs thursday through sunday, March 8-11. Miller’s trio performs two sets (8 and 10pm) friday, March 9, in the banquet room of sandi Pointe coastal Bistro (see sidebar for details). Miller got his start as a young gospel-rooted pianist from Mississippi who was recruited into the venerable duke ellington orchestra in 1977 in new York city — at a time when he was even younger than either of the two rising stars rounding out his trio, camdenborn drummer rodney Green and chicago-born bassist ivan taylor. “if you want to know the truth, i’m now older than their parents,” Miller tells Atlantic City Weekly during a recent phone conversation. “We’ve been together about six years. they were young guys on the new York city music scene and — as was the case with me and the ellington orchestra — you hear about young musicians and often times someone is referred to you. ivan, my bass player, was recommended by another young friend, and rodney, my drummer, i met when he was still in his teens. he was at the Mid-atlantic Jazz festival and he won some sort of contest for high school students.” Miller last remembers performing in the somers Point area as a 22-year-old with the ellington orchestra, which brought him in when Bill easley, a multi-reed instrumentalist whom Miller met in Memphis, tenn., recommended him. Miller would later perform with another jazz luminary, drummer art Like us:

Miller responded in kind by mentoring young jazz musicians as the director of jazz studies at William Paterson University, a title he currently holds along with an honorary doctorate degree from Lafayette college in his now hometown of easton, Pa. “[Blakey]’s a true legend,” says Miller. “he was one of the most important and influential jazz drummers ever, and he and [the Messengers] went on to produce many other influential jazz musicians over time.”

guitarist sheryl Bailey and her quartet, tenor saxophonist Walt Weiskopf and his sextet, and drummer tim horner and his quintet. “[Miller]’s been on the wish list for several years,” says Lekan. “i’m just thrilled he’ll be here. We’re all thrilled. We think we have just an incredible lineup this year.” saturday night the modern jazz organ trio three Blind Mice (Victor north on sax, Lucas Brown on organ and Wayne smith on drums) will bring a Philadelphia flair to the festival, and Lekan says it’s always a priority to blend a local influence with new acts from other areas into the festival. drummer Keith hollis grew up in atlantic city and leads a quartet at Gregory’s restaurant on friday night, and horner is a longtime drummer from new York city who will perform at Gregory’s sunday afternoon. “[horner]’s been one of the most in-demand drummers in new York for over 20 years and just came out with his first cd [The Places We Feel Free] as a leader,” says Lekan, who notes that the pianist in horner’s quintet, Jim ridl, is also a member of the antfarm Quartet, in which Lekan plays bass. “and Jimmy cobb [of cobb’s Mob, a quartet performing saturday night at sandi Pointe] is the drummer who played with Miles as a pianist complementing Blakey’s davis, John coltrane and cannonball drums, Miller says that the relationship adderley from 1957 to 1963. that’s pretty between the two instruments is a special significant. and he’s still going strong.” one in jazz. Danny Eyer, the Geator and Herb “Bubba” Birch in Florida

O

nce again, greetings and salutations. and without a doubt, the most exciting event of the year so far was Boardwalk Live weekend at the seminole Hard rock in Florida with yours truly, the geator, the Bubba Mac Band, Pinky Kravitz, dave & tina, and the folks from WtKU and WOnd when we took our entire act to the sunny lands along with Frankie Valli & the Four seasons. People are still talking about the excitement that they heard over the airwaves up this way. so many people to thank for this event, but especially dave coskey and Longport Media for bringing all the magic that happened locally this way. Besides dancing, the geator had the privilege of introducing Frankie for his 50th anniversary celebration on stage at the Hard rock Live. and a special thank you to Jim allen, Bernie dillon, terri Lutz, and all the folks from the Hard rock. now let’s ask the geator.

Geator on ‘The Monkees’ Prayer.” Just can’t get that song out of my mind. — Neal Bracken, Lansdale, Pa. according to gloria’s son, who became a dJ and now has his own group, Will to Power: “My mother got married in 1958 to al rosenberg. the comedian don rickles brought my father from Manhattan to Philly to watch my mother perform. she did a few radio jingles but no recording or big performances after 1959. she passed away in december 2001.” gloria also had a daughter, diane, who came to see me last week at the seminole Hard rock in Florida. Geator, who sings that song “You Will Never Get Away” that you play on your radio show? Sounds like a girl group. — John Becker, North Cape May

interesting question. the artist is credited as cholli Maye. in actuality the song was written and produced by charlie calello, who was a member of Frankie Valli’s original group, the Four Lovers, and went on to produce and arrange Hey, Jerry, have you ever been on the show many of the Four seasons’ hits. also the Monkees? The Somers Point Jazz Society 2012 Jazz @ the Point Festival

Like so many commendable creations, the Somers Point Jazz Society (SPJS) is an entity that was spawned sort of by accident, according to the organization’s president, Nick regine, as was the festival that hatched it and is now overseen by it, the Jazz @ the Point Festival. “When I was director of Community Education and recreation in Somers Point, part of my job responsibilities was to act as the fund-development officer for the local Foundation for Education,” says regine. “At that point the Foundation was just beginning and was heavily involved in special-event fund-raising, golf tournaments, dinner dances, etc. “I wanted to try something different and set out to create a Chili and Blues Festival. The manufacturer of Beano was in Egg harbor Township, and I thought it would be a natural to convince them to be the corporate sponsor of this event.” The gas-relief king was counted in, but, due to a misquote from a company representative, for not nearly as much as regine first thought. “This caused me to switch gears,” he says. “I had a few close friends who were jazz musicians, so I approached them with an idea of doing a one-day jazz festival.” In the mid-1990s the first Somers Point Jazz Festival was born. It was moderately successful at first, but regine found the need to form a focus group to steer its future course when popularity somewhat atrophied. It would eventually morph into a three-night, 10-event festival, and in 2004, when regine was readying to retire from the Foundation and the newly formed non-profit organization Somers Point Jazz Society was launched, the festival really began to find its legs. Over the years the festival, now spanning four days, has raised over $25,000 for the Somers Point School District’s arts and music programs. The SPJS itself has expanded from one festival to at least 30 events throughout the year, and has been the key driving force behind the revitalization of the jazz scene in southern New Jersey. Along with the great live entertainment, this year’s Jazz @ the Point Festival will also include an art exhibit and sale at Sandi Point Coastal Bistro. Artwork by Carole Zerbe and Jeff Schwachter (AC Weekly’s editor) will all focus on jazz-related themes and figures. — RS

Hoopin’ at the Hall

Ranked in the Top 25 in the nation, Temple is No. 1 seed in A-10 tournament By Lori Hoffman

Men’s

Basketball tournament takes place at Boardwalk hall for a sixth and final year March 9-11. the tournament is moving to the Barclays center in Brooklyn, the new home for the new Jersey nets, next year. With this being the last hurrah for March Madness at Boardwalk hall, it is fitting that temple University is back as the no. 1 seed. the Owls, ranked in the top 25 in both the AP (21) and esPn/coaches Poll (24), have had a good run in Atlantic city, winning the A-10 tournament three out of the last four years. this year the team added its first outright A-10 regular season title since 1990, and Fran Dunphy was named A-10 coach of the Year for the second time in the last three seasons. For most of those years, their chief rival has been the X-factor known as the Xavier Musketeers, but after a blazing 8-0 start, including a win over — and brawl with — cincinnati (which included suspensions), the X-Men quickly left the top 25, never to return. the team also snapped a streak of five straight A-10 regular-season titles, but they did finish third in the league, good for a first round bye in the tournament. in a year when parity has made the A-10 a league where even the best teams had to fight and claw for each victory, the other teams earning a first round bye are st. louis and the on-the-rise Bonnies of st. Bonaventure. Parity, ironically, could be a factor in limiting the A-10 entrants in the ncAA tournament. temple doesn’t need the automatic bid the winner of the A-10 tournament receives. st. louis should also earn a ncAA berth; the team will have a 25-win season with a victory over lasalle Friday at Boardwalk hall. it would be the team’s first trip to the ncAA tournament since 1999. Xavier’s inconsistent play has put them just outside “bubble” status, so the team’s mindset should be that it must win the A-10 to guarantee a return trip to the ncAA tourney. For the rest of the league, the only way in is by winning it all in Atlantic city. in the first round games tuesday, UMass defeated Duquesne 92-83; st. Joseph’s topped charlotte 80-64; lasalle beat Richmond 80-72 and Dayton defeated George Washington 67-50. those games set up the opening round games Friday in Atlantic city. temple plays UMass at noon, st. Bonaventure faces st. Joe’s at 2:30pm, lasalle plays st. louis at 6:30pm and the nightcap features fierce Ohio-based rivals Xavier vs. Dayton at 9pm. Like us:

(1) Temple Owls Philadelphia, Pa. Conference (Overall) Record: 13-3 (24-6) Coach: Fran Dunphy Projected starters: Ramone Moore, Juan Fernandez, Khalif Wyatt, Rahir Hollis-Jefferson, Micheal Eric. Fran Dunphy’s squad has been at or near the top of the A-10 all season, including winning 11 conference games in a row. The team is on both the aP and ESPN/coaches Top 25 Poll (21/24). Temple is led by its trio of guards — ramone Moore (17.9ppg), Khalif Wyatt (17.4) and Juan Fernandez (11.1). Moore is tied with Andrew Nicholson of St. Bonaventure as the a-10’s top scorers. The Owls got a big boost when big man Micheal Eric returned from injury to join Rahir Hollis-Jefferson as an imposing front court presence (both average 9.1ppg; Eric averages 8.9 rebounds). Temple has a victory over Duke on its resume. (2) St. Louis Billikens St. Louis, Mo. Conference (Overall) Record: 12-4 (24-6) Coach: Rick Majerus Projected starters: Mike McCall, Jr., Brian Conklin, Kwamain Mitchell, Dwayne Evans, Rob Loe. Former legendary Utah coach Rick Majerus is at the helm in St. Louis and earned his 500th win this season, his fifth with the Billikens. St. Louis leads the A-10 in defense, holding teams to 56.4ppg, good enough to be in the top 10 in the nation. The Billikens have balanced scoring with a deep bench featuring Cody Ellis (10.8ppg) and Jordair Jett. The team is lead by senior forward Brain conklin (14ppg) and junior point guard Kwamain Mitchell (12ppgp). The Billikens were ranked in the aP Top 25 at one point in the season. The team beat Xavier twice and lost to Temple by five 72-67 in their only meeting. (3) Xavier Musketeers Cincinnati, Ohio Conference (Overall) Record: 10-6 (19-11) Coach: Chris Mack Projected starters: Tu holloway, Kenny Frease, Mark Lyons, Dezmine Wells, Andre Walker. The X-men hope to make it seven straight 20-win seasons with at least one win in the A-10 tournament. After a hot start and ranking in the AP and ESPN/coaches Top 10, the team took a dive and struggled to reach the top half of the A-10 in a league that played a lot tougher this year. Thanks to the play of guards Tu holloway (16.4ppg) and mark Lyons (15.9ppg), the steady presence of senior center Kenny Frease and the emergence of exciting rookie guard/forward Dezmine Wells (10.2ppg), the X-men could still be a major X-factor in the tournament. (4) St. Bonaventure St. Bonaventure, N.Y. Conference (Overall) 10-6 (17-11) Coach: Mark Schmidt

Projected starters: andrew Nicholson, Demitrius Conger, Da’Quan Cook, Matthew Wright, Charton Kloof In five years as head coach, mark Schmidt has taken his team from A-10 doormat to a team earning a first round bye this season. The Bonnies are led by a-10 Player of the Year andrew Nicholson, who leads the league in scoring (17.9ppg) and is also second in the league in rebounding (8.3rpg). The Bonnies lead the league in rebounding margin and are second to St. Louis in defense, holding teams to 64.4 points per game.

(5) St. Joseph’s Hawks Philadelphia, Pa. Conference (Overall) Record: 9-7 (20-9) Coach: Phil Martelli Projected starters: Langston Galloway, Carl Jones, Halil Kanacevic, C.J. Aiken, Daryus Quarles Phil Martelli’s squad improved dramatically from last year, but still had an up and down season which happens with a team loaded with underclassmen. However they had to feel great about upsetting Temple and halting the Owls 11-game winning streak. The hawks are a balanced scoring team led by guards Carl Jones (16.3ppg) and Langston Galloway (15.9ppg). Halil Kanacevic pulls down 8.1rpg and Ronald Roberts earned A-10 Sixth Man of the Year honors. (11.1ppg, 6rpg). The a-10 Defensive Player of the year is c.J. Aiken, who led the league in blocked shots with 3.7 per game. (6) Dayton Flyers Dayton, Ohio Conference (Overall) Record: 9-7 (20-11) Coach: Ryan “Archie” Miller Projected starters: Kevin Dillard, Chris Johnson, Matt Kavanaugh, Paul Williams, Devin Oliver. The Flyers, under first year head coach archie miller (brother of former Xavier and current Arizona coach Sean Miller), have had an up and down season in a league that has shown a major improvement in skill level across the board. The Flyers still like to run and pop the 3-pointer and are led by point guard Kevin Dillard, who is second in the league in assists (5.9apg) and leads the team in scoring (12.9ppg). Senior forward Chris Johnson (12.1ppg) is another major contributor. The Flyers have a deep bench led by 3-point sniper Luke Fabrizius and senior guard Josh Parker. (7) La Salle Explorers Philadelphia, Pa. Conference (Overall) Record: 9-7 (21-11) Coach: Dr. John Giannini Projected starters: Earl Pettis, Ramon Galloway, Jerrell Wright, Earl Pettis, Tyreek Duren. The Explorers have climbed from the bottom to the middle of the A-10 pack this season with its first 20-win season in 20 years. The team features a four guard starting line-up with Earl Pettis (15.2ppg) and league-leading 3-point shooter

Temple’s Lavoy Allen scores at 2009 tourney. Ramon Galloway (14.3ppg). LaSalle leads the a-10 in 3-point percentage at 40 percent. The team’s starting five all average double figures. They figure to give St. Louis a battle in the first round. (8) University of Massachusetts Minutemen Amherst, Mass. Conference (Overall) Record: 9-7 (21-10) Coach: Derek Kellogg Projected starters: Chaz Williams, Raphiael Putney, Freddie Riley, Sampson Carter, Terrell Vinson. UMass is led by guard Chaz Williams (16.1ppg), who is seventh in the a-10 in scoring. The team has depth off the bench and is second in the league in scoring (75.7ppg) behind Temple. This team could be a spoiler with victories over St. Louis and Xavier. Temple had to stave off a furious comeback in its 90-88 victory over the Minutemen. n
