ednesday, March 19, is a huge day for Ventnor’s Michael Einwechter and his wife Christine Pagano, owners of Ventnor Coffee in Ventnor Heights. The date marks a month since the city’s Zoning Board held a hearing regarding the young business owners’ coffee shop, which opened in August 2013. However, earlier this year, Ventnor Coffee, which hosts live music, poetry readings, adult and teen classes (as most coffee houses do) was ordered by the city to define what a “coffee house” is exactly as Ventnor has never had one in its borders and its officials say they were unaware that it would include more than selling hot beverages. The owners of the comfortable and classy operation have had to prepare their definition of what a coffee house is and will present it to the Zoning Board on March 19 at 6:30pm at the Ventnor Elementary School on Lafayette Avenue, which holds about 500 people. The java house owners were issued a violation by the city for hosting live music earlier this year, but have been allowed to continue since the Feb. 19 meeting. More than 300 people passed through the rustic coffee house this past Saturday (March 8) as the shop continued its Music Showdown contest for local musicians, which is slated to run through April 12. Still, although supporters of the coffee house — especially nearby businesses, which have seen a boom in business since the coffee house has been hosting the Showdown — are many, especially in the community of Ventnor Heights, the coffee-house owners have incurred a lot of unexpected expenses and legal fees all of a sudden in their first year of operation. Supporters of local live music, local businesses, small businesses or a couple of young Ventnor residents trying to live the American Dream, are encouraged to “just show up to the March 19 meeting,” says Einwechter, and show your support.

Woo ‘When the Past Arrives’ (Drag City)

B

rothers Mark and Clive Ives (Woo) make music as one writer describes “like ... for a housewife sent home from the psychiatrist with about a million prescriptions.” A new set of airy, un-released Woo songs from the 1970s and ‘80s, When the Past Arrives, a follow-up to the ambient-music duo’s re-released 1989 collection It’s Cosy Inside, makes this crystalline clear and will be released on Drag City/Yoga Records March 18. Brian Eno, Animal Collective and dentist-office music fans alike will gush over the comforting sonic tapestries constructed on songs such as the Hawaiiantinged “Satya,” the cello-infused “1001 Decisions,” the pulsating ooze of “First Night Nerves” and, well, every other track on this perfectly blissful album. Great for a sleep aid, a long drive (while the sun’s still up) or a day at the office, When the Past Arrives and the work that went into compiling this meditative (check out “Om Shanti”) and cozy (“Teddy Bears”) collection culled mainly from late-night sessions was well worth the wait. — Jeff Schwachter

77th Maxwell Awards Move to Revel March 14 By Ray Schweibert

T

he Philadelphia-based Maxwell Football Club, the oldest club of its kind in the nation, has held its annual awards presentation in Atlantic City for the last 10 years. This year the gala switches sites to Revel’s Ovation Hall on Friday, March 14. Tickets are $300 per person but are listed on the club’s Web site (maxwellfootballclub.org) as sold out. However, there will be a red-carpet arrival and meet-and-greet photo opportunity for fans prior to the gala, starting 6pm Friday outside Ovation Hall. Many of the biggest names in the NFL and major-college player and coaching ranks will be in attendance. Established by former NFL commissioner Bert Bell in 1935 to promote excellence at all levels of football, with a focus on player and coach development, safety and wellness, the MFC’s 55th annual Bert Bell Award for Professional Player of the Year will go to Peyton Manning of the Denver Broncos. The winner of the 25th annual Greasy Neale Professional Coach of the Year Award goes to Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly. Other awards to be presented at Revel include the Maxwell Award for Outstanding Collegiate Player of the Year (A.J. McCarron of Alabama), the Chuck Bednarik Award for Collegiate Defensive Player of the Year (Aaron Donald of Pittsburgh), the MFC Collegiate Coach of the Year Award (David Cutcliffe of Duke), the Brian Westbrook Tri-State Player of the Year (Rondell White of West Chester University), and the MFC Tri-State Coach of the Year (Bill Zwaan of West Chester University). This year’s gala will also include an award to Mike Ditka, Pro Football Hall of Fame coach and ESPN analyst, who will receive the MFC Broadcaster of the Year Award. The organization’s president is Ron Jaworski, the longtime ESPN analyst and former 17-year NFL quarterback (including 10 with the Eagles, 1977-’86), who helped pace Philly to its first Super Bowl appearance in 1980. see more online @

or some, Saturday afternoon’s St. Patrick’s Day parade and Running of the Leprechauns pub crawl later that night is simply not enough to salute the life of Ireland’s most revered saint. For this reason the Tropicana has forged a weeklong series of events celebrating St. Patrick dubbed Whiskey Week. It starts Sunday, March 16, with the RiRa Irish Pub’s Polar Plunge at 9am. Sean Patrick of 103.7 WMGM radio will serve as host, and RiRa will provide plungers with hot cider, a hot breakfast sandwich, and a complimentary towel or long sleeve T-shirt. At noon, RiRa will have $5 whiskey specials on Powers, Jameson, The Knot or Irish Mist, and a live performance by the Reilly Brothers. Guests can purchase raffle tickets to win a RiRa gift card. Proceeds benefit the Community FoodBank of New Jersey. Those $5 specials last all week at RiRa, as do a series of four-whiskey flights priced from $14, and specialty dishes like whiskey-glazed salmon with side dishes for $15. Other events include a Jameson whiskey tasting at Chickie’s & Pete’s on Tuesday, March 18, and again on Friday, March 21. It features a sampling of three styles of Jameson whiskey and an assortment of light bites for $20 per person. Similar offerings are happening Wednesday at Chickie’s & Pete’s with samplings of Laphroaig Scotch, and on Thursday with different styles of Jim Beam bourbon. All are priced at $20 and run from 7-9pm. On Thursday, March 20, Carmine’s Whiskey Cocktail Hour will start 6pm in The Quarter. A $15 fee includes a selection of whiskey drinks paired with appetizers. Then on Friday, March 21, it’s “Bourbons, Whiskey & Ryes, Oh My!” at Broadway Burger Bar from 6-11pm. The event will showcase some of the finest single-barrel and small-batch products from the Pa.-based Michter’s, the nation’s oldest distillery. A $30 admission includes five samplings paired with a specially crafted food and desert menu. The evening will also include prizes and giveaways, including a 750-milliliter bottle of guests’ choice of spirits from Michter’s lineup. Other property-wide Whiskey Week specials include a Jack Daniels steak fajita dinner at A Dam Good Sports Bar ($12); a 15 percent discount on any whiskey purchase at A Time For Wine; $12.50 Sinatra’s Iced Tea made with Rittenhouse rye whiskey, a $13 Very Italian Manhattan made with Maker’s Mark bourbon, or a $13.50 Jack’s Lemonade at Carmine’s; $5 Fireball shots, $6 Jack Daniels cocktails or a $12 Jack Daniels BBQ pulled pork torta with drunken beans at Casa Taco & Tequila Bar; a complimentary Hooters shot glass with purchase of a Fireball shot ($7, limit one shot glass per guest), $9 Calendar Girl Coffee (including Jameson and Baileys

Curtain Call >>

Orlando at 70 By David J. Spatz • feedback@acweekly.com

A

s Tony Orlando contemplates a milestone birthday that’s fast approaching, he looks back on his 54-year entertainment career with a sense of pride, accomplishment and self-satisfaction. His achievements are as broad as they are diverse. His first hit record (“Halfway to Paradise”) came in 1961, when he was just 16. By the time he was 20, the British music invasion led by the Beatles made him the youngest oldie but goodie in the business, so he began working behind the scenes in the record business before returning to the spotlight nearly a decade later and recording a series of Top 10 songs, including one of the most covered tunes of all time (“Tie A Yellow Ribbon.”) He’s performed for every American president since Richard Nixon; had a hit TV variety series; was a semi-regular on the 1980s sitcom The Cosby Show; starred in motion pictures (most recently with Adam Sandler in That’s My Boy); was featured in several made-for-TV movies; had two starring turns on Broadway; performed for American troops in war zones; spent 30 years as a host of Jerry Lewis’ annual Labor Day telethon for muscular dystrophy; and headlined regularly for 20 years — and once had his own theater — in

Branson, Mo., where he still makes his home. So as his 70th birthday approaches on Apr. 3, is there anything left on Orlando’s show business bucket list? Turns out there is. “I want to sign a five-year contract with Caesars Palace in Las Vegas when I’m 95, just like George Burns did,” Orlando says during a phone call from a casino in northern California, where he was performing last week. Orlando counted the late and legendary comedian — who died in 1996 shortly after turning 100 — among his friends. He recalled a conversation he had with Burns, who really did sign a five-year deal with the iconic Las Vegas casino when he was 95. “He said, ‘If I do good, they’re going to extend my stay,’” Orlando says, dissolving into laughter at the happy memory. “That’s what I want. That’s the only thing on my bucket list.” Orlando, who returns to Atlantic City for a one-night-stand Saturday (March 15) in Borgata’s Event Center, says his career was never built on a carefully crafted plan or strategy. Instead, every success he’s had has simply been the culmination of his boyhood dreams about being in show business when he was growing up on the streets of New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen. “I’ve never lost the ability to dream about

the next thing in this business,” he says. “So it’s not a matter of what I’m going to do next, it’s a matter of continuing to do what I’ve been doing since I was 16, and just live it like a dream.” As a kid singing on the street corner or tenement roof tops, Orlando dreamed about working with the giants of the business. His career as a performer was just beginning to flourish in the early 1960s. But the train jumped the tracks in 1964, when the Beatles led the British invasion of America and its popular music stars. So Orlando made a smooth and easy segue into the business end of music, becoming general manager of Columbia Records and later going on to run April-Blackwood Records, the publishing arm of CBS. Orlando helped guide the early careers of artists like Carole King, James Taylor and Barry Manilow, among others. Occasionally during his days as a recording industry executive, Orlando would go into a studio to record demos so composers would have an idea how a particular tune sounded. Without his knowledge, one demo, called “Knock Three Times,” was released under the group name Dawn and became a hit. Without meaning to, Orlando found himself back in the spotlight. It’s a place where he’s very comfortable. Orlando has been performing as a solo artist since he and Dawn (Telma Hopkins and Joyce Vincent-Wilson) went their separate ways in the late 1970s, although they have occasionally reunited over the last 35 years

facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly

for a brief tour and some recording projects. Through the years, Orlando built a reputation for leaving nothing on the table during his live shows. In concert, he usually gets the hit songs out of the way early in the show to keep fans from yelling for them. Then he proceeds to put on a full-fledged variety revue by featuring his six-piece band, The Lefty Brothers, and letting them show off their individual skills. Orlando, who hasn’t had a hit song for three decades, continues to defy the notion that a performer is only as big as his or her last hit record. He rarely plays to an empty seat, especially in Atlantic City, where he’s been headlining for more than 35 years. Not bad for a guy whose career has been built on some crazy dreams. “The dream just goes on,” he says. “To think that I was able to live out those dreams and get to know all of my idols. To work with [Frank] Sinatra, work with Dean [Martin], work with Sammy [Davis Jr.] and Jackie Gleason, to meet and work with the Beatles during their early years — and work for all of those presidents. Not bad for a kid with an eighth-grade education.” Orlando doesn’t question how or why he’s been so fortunate in an unforgiving business that often doesn’t give some people 54 weeks of success, let alone 54 years. “The older I get, the more I realize that I’m still that kid on the [tenement] roof dreaming of going further,” he says. “The only time that dream will die will be when [God] takes me home.” n

ince opening in July 2008 as Atlantic City’s first “boutique” non-casino property, The Chelsea hotel has also cultivated a serious culinary reputation for itself. From that time through to the current regime of food-and-beverage director Megan McNulty and chef Jaime Quintana, the facility earned a solid niche amongst food folk in the highly competitive restaurant market that is Atlantic City. We visited recently, to sample their repositioned Dining on the Fifth space — once steak house Chelsea Prime — and the ground-level, all-day gem Teplitzky’s. Our evening on the Fifth began with an appetizer trio of mini crab cakes. Three perfectly formed, round nuggets of mostly lump crab nicely pan-browned and arranged on a wide plate dotted with orange aioli. Cuban pork tacos, like the cakes, brought a portion of three. Soft mini tortillas overflowed with warm, mildly seasoned pork. A diced mango salsa accompanied, adding color and creating a nice compliment to the savory meat. Both plates ably performed the most essential purpose of apps, igniting appetites in anticipation of what follows. Like our favorite item of this night, surprisingly, a chopped salad. Despite depths of winter outside, this bowl was loaded with summery goodness; crisp romaine, corn, sliced red pepper and onion, tiny cuts of haricot verts and scads of creamy, luscious avocado. All would have been fine solo, with the avocado’s natural moisture as dressing, but the provided Green Goddess tossed throughout was an enchanting, herbaceous stroke of genius. My entrée, pistachio crusted tuna with sautéed white beans, roasted peppers and lemon oil drizzle, arrived in seven thick

Dining on the Fifth at The Chelsea hotel slices, beautifully fanned across half of the plate. The remaining portion was ladled with a soft, aromatic blend of sautéed bean mixture drizzled with lemon oil. We greatly enjoyed the presentation and quality of fish, but felt a bit too much garlic undermined the pistachio’s delicate contribution. My dining partner opted for another seafood, seared scallops over Arborio rice and asparagus. Four discs of creamy mollusks were presented atop risotto, dotted with the aristocratic green vegetable, a sure portent of spring’s imminent arrival. Desserts brought a cookie trio; chocolate chip, oatmeal and sugar served warm in a

M y chocolate Kahlua c a k e , rich and dense, delivered potent, not-so-sweet notes defining the real nature of cacao, given an extra oomph via the lively coffee essence of that Mexican liqueur. Throughout our meal, we couldn’t help but notice a distinct change in the overall personality evident at the establishment as well. What once was a retro supper club now pulses a younger, hipper vibe, with a clientele largely composed of sharp 20- to 40-somethings.

Ambiance however, remains majestic; Chelsea’s Fifth Floor provides an unobstructed, panoramic view of the beach and blue Atlantic below. The aforementioned demographic shift was equally apparent the next morning at Teplitzky’s. An all-day eatery, customers are afforded a choice of multiple locales. Fronting Chelsea and Pacific Avenues is their primary, L-shaped area, a glorious, diner-esque homage to A.C.’s distant past, complete with full bar and counter seating. Just beyond that sits a smaller, circular room near the outdoor pool, where we happily ensconced. Pretty and intimate, this space was sun-filled, warm and welcoming. Once here, yours truly gamely attempted to take on their notorious “Big Teplitzky” challenge. Finished in 30 minutes or less, one achieves gastronomic immortality. Consisting of four full pounds of food, we were successful consuming five of six eggs (we chose poached), all six pieces of bacon, four of six pieces of pork roll, two of four turkey sausage links, two of four massive pancakes, two of four thick-cut pieces of Challah French toast, two of four pieces of rye toast, half the hash browns (prodigiously portioned) plus juice and coffee. Close to three-quarters of the victuals, but no Big Teplitzky T-shirt for us, at least this time. Our sensible companion decided upon Mascarpone-stuffed French toast, ladled with vibrant berry compote. Similarly composed from golden Challah, this peasant specialty was elevated by sweet Italian cream cheese, smoother and lighter than domestic products. In our Wish List column of early 2014, we pleaded for a signature brunch spot in Atlantic City. Teplitzky’s, with a wideranging, high-quality bill of fare, more than meets that request. n

Disco Queen

Going back where she started from, Maxine Nightingale continues her acclaimed ‘Disco Lady’ show at Resorts through April 27 By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com

M

Disco Lady is a simple show with prerecorded music, four dancers, a video screen and Nightingale in the middle. There is nothing extravagant about it except for Nightingale’s musical talent and her joy in sharing her love of life with the audience. It is that palpable joy that makes Disco Lady a fun night out as Nightingale presents such disco era classics as her own hits plus “I Love the Nightlife,” a Miami Sound Machine medley that includes “Rhythm Is Gonna Get You” and “Turn the Beat Around” and a tribute to Donna Summer that features “On the Radio,” “Hot Stuff” and “Bad Girls.” And, while most of us have hated this snow-filled winter, it has provided a nice change of pace for Ms. Nightingale as she disclosed in a chat with Atlantic City Weekly.

“I’m enjoying it,” admits Nightingale with a laugh. “I live in L.A. and when it is 80 degrees at Christmas you get a little annoyed. Walking the Boardwalk is fun for me. I know you guys didn’t like it, but I enjoyed walking the Boardwalk in the snow. That’s right up there with experiences. Growing up in Wembley [an area of Northwest London] I could never have imagined spending a winter walking the beach in Atlantic City with crunchy snow.” Nightingale had the concept for Disco Lady brewing for some time but when she broached the subject with potential investors they weren’t interested. “I do loads of one-nighters around the country and I’ve seen a lot of the disco stars come out and do a couple of songs and I thought, ‘Surely we can do something a bit more exciting than this.’ I did a few shows with Nile Rodgers and Chic and it came to me that

“I’m playful on stage. If a silly joke comes into my head I just say it. That is my personality. I like to have fun with life.”

axine Nightingale has been atop the musical world and seen it come crashing down without warning. But no matter what the circumstances, she kept a cheery outlook and remained optimistic. That is how the 1970s disco queen from England, best known for her hit songs “Lead Me On” and “Right Back Where We Started From,” managed to survive the ups and downs of being a disco star. It was an era that was embraced by many for its upbeat vibe, fueled by the soundtrack from Saturday Night Fever and the disco divas of the era, led by Donna Summer. It was also a period that came crashing down a few years later. However, as happens for so many musical styles, dance music is once again leading the pop charts. As part of that current wave, Nightingale has settled into a nice groove as the star of a show she designed called Disco Lady Starring Maxine Nightingale, now playing at Resorts. Even before the show officially opened in late February, it was extended twice with additional shows, showing that audiences were anxious to relive their disco dreams.

we could do a show with the best music of the era. “I wanted to do a show that incorporated the best hits of the era and my own hit songs and began shopping it around” with, she admits, “No reaction. ‘Yeah. Sounds nice.’” However, moving the timeline a few years forward to a one-night gig with Thelma Houston and Evelyn Champagne King in Atlantic City in 2012, and with the help of a booking agent, Nightingale put in motion the show that is now bringing out disco fans dancing in the aisles at Resorts’ Superstar Theater. “So I have my dancers and my sequined costumes. My husband created all the musical tracks. Sometimes it amazes me because it turned out just the way I wanted it to. It’s working very well and audiences love it. “I’m playful on stage. If a silly joke comes into my head I just say it. That is my personality. I like to have fun with life.” What might be surprising about the success of Disco Lady as a nostalgia show is that there was a major backlash against the music in the early ’80s. It didn’t as much fade away as it was murdered by the anti-disco movement. “When I think back to the beginning of the ’80s I think of only one word: desert,” remembers Nightingale. “It was a desert. The seventies style of music and production got smoother and smoother and smoother. It was really great until finally it was too smooth and then punk and all the other [styles of music] came along and broke it into pieces, and we were left washed up on the beach. It was scary but it was a period that allowed me to find myself as a singer.” She performed with a jazz trio among other jobs in the post-disco period. Then as the 1990s progressed came the calls again for Maxine Nightingale, the disco diva. She realized that disco was really back after a concert with the mid-2000s with Chic at the Hollywood Bowl, which seats 25,000. “The place was packed with babies, drag queens, old people like me and everybody in between. They knew all the words and were dancing in disco costumes. The ’80s were a really difficult time and bewildering for those of us who came from the music of the ’70s, but my gosh it came roaring back. I’m in my sixties and I’m still in my heels and I’m still doing it. “You have to persist in finding the joy in life and you have to keep fit. My life consists of dancing, singing, vocalizing, sleeping, reading and cooking. There is no more time for partying. I party onstage for an hour.” ■
