‘Legends’ Lives On Striving to embody the spirit and energy of some of the most renowned performers ever, the long-running Legends in Concert show at Bally’s Atlantic City is not just an impersonating act but more of a tribute and homage to the best of the best. For those who have seen the real deal, Legends rekindles some of those classic concert memories. For those who wish they lived in a different era, Legends might provide a brief outlet of fulfillment — especially for Elvis, Sinatra and Ray Charles fans. From its start as a limited six-week performance at Las Vegas’ Imperial Palace hotel in 1983 — to now almost 30 years later — the Legends show has been entertaining the masses throughout the world and at various locations in the United States such as Waikiki, Myrtle Beach, and here in Atlantic City. Owned and operated by Onstage Entertainment, Legends has been the longest running independently owned show in Las Vegas and atlantic city. This season’s lineup includes Elvis Presley, ray charles, Liza minnelli, the Blues Brothers and Tina Turner. The performers not only look like the stars themselves, but dress, act, move and even speak as if they are whom they’re paying tribute to. “after having toured alongside the real deal, I wouldn’t be involved with Legends if it weren’t close to the real deal and didn’t touch memories in my heart of how great these legends truly were,” says Mark Kogan of Legends in Concert, who has worked tours with the real Elvis, charles and Bob Dylan. Two giant screens bookend the sides of the stage where actual footage of the original performers is streamed while the show takes place. The performers are often wearing exactly or similar clothes to the real artists in the footage as well as moving their bodies and singing in sync as if the audience is watching the concert live. And in a sense, they kind of are. (See ticket info on p. 28 and more from this interview at acweekly.com.) — Josh Kinney

Although the Chieftans celebrate their 50th anniversary this year with a phenomenal new album (Voice of Ages) boasting guest stars such as Mick Jagger, The Decemberists and Van Morrison, one of Ireland’s other premier bands, Clannad, celebrates its 40-year career with a new 2-CD retrospective. The Essential Clannad may be less essential than actually listening to all of the band’s tremendous albums individually, but it does give a good sense of the band’s mellow, Gaelic-flavored pop. Through 30 tracks, steeped in traditional Irish folk — specifically from the Donegal region — the Grammy-winning quintet’s Celtic songs flow seamlessly (including tracks from its early 1980s albums through the late ‘90s recordings) to paint a vivid picture of the isolated Irish countryside. After 14 years, Clannad will tour and release a new album this fall. — Jeff Schwachter

dinner hours wane thursdays, and tailors his sets around the crowd’s temperament. if it seems laid back, he may lean more toward mellow rock classics. if it’s more upbeat — as it was last thursday, March 8, when a convention was in town — he’ll go in that direction. “on thursday a PBa [Police Benevolent association] convention was here and it was packed right off the bat,” says eric. “i started doing a bunch of irish tunes like ‘drunken sailor’ and others, and some members of the military came up and made a request for ‘the wild Rover.’ so i started playing it and they actually got up and started singing along with me. that was cool, and one of the policemen from Monmouth county was a big Bruce springsteen fan, and after he heard me do a few springsteen songs he asked if i’d be interested in playing in his wedding, which was also cool.” eric is a twotime finalist in Billboard magazine’s songwriting contests (in 1991 and 1994), and will occasionally mix in an original or two he penned. Prior to retiring from lifeguarding, craine and his acBP cronies had a ritual involving the irish Pub — which this July will celebrate the 25th anniversary of its tour de shore, a 65-mile bike ride (from the Philadelphia irish Pub to the a.c. irish Pub) that has raised over $2 million for various children’s charities. “when i was still on the beach, we used to hang out at the pub for a while, ride the jitney down to Jackson avenue and then thumb it to washington avenue and go to Maloney’s [a hallowed Margate hangout that closed in 2005],” says craine. “well, one night we got a little too raucous — it was when the song ‘Kung Fu Fighting’ was popular and we were all out practicing our Kung Fu fighting — and the bouncers at Maloney’s decided to give us the door. so where did we end up? Back at the irish Pub.” n

tlantic city showcased its irish spirit last saturday (March 10) in the 27th annual st. Patrick’s day Parade, but had you turned right off the Boardwalk at st. James Place, about a halfmile into the parade route, you’d have come across an establishment that probably emulates the flavor of ireland better than anything else in the city. the irish Pub is at the base of an old (circa 1905) Victorian-style hotel building, and has been run by dick and cathy Burke since 1972. entering during daylight hours may require an adjustment to the change in light, or lack thereof, but once done you’ll see that this is no cookie-cutter pub replica. the dark-grained wood interior and old-a.c. memorabilia makes for a warm, welcoming feel. it is a place with authentic charm that’s been sought out by locals and regular resort guests for decades. and whether it’s a reasonably priced meal or just a place to hang out and enjoy some spirits — including harp, Irish Pub’s float at the A.C. Bass, Killian’s, St. Patricks Day Parade yuengling and Murphy’s irish stout on tap — the pub will probably fit the bill. lifelong atlantic city resident and 25-year a.c. Beach Patrol member Jim “the singing lifeguard” craine has plenty of fond memories of the irish Pub. “we had lifeguard meetings there and we’d meet after lifeguard races and stuff, we had steel Pier reunions there,” says craine. “it’s a great place to go any time of the year, especially at christmas time. cathy decorates the place up so beautifully. and when you’re short on cash that’s the place to be, because they always have specials and the food’s outstanding.” the pub does a daily “Poor Richard special” ($3.50 lunch, $8 dinner), and on Friday nights has a 5-8pm happy hour offering $2.50 domestic draft pints and $3 appetizers. “the portions are huge and the prices are really reasonable,” says Glen eric, a singer/acoustic guitarist who performs at the pub every thursday night. “i mean, it’s not four-star dining, but it’s not supposed to be. it serves its purpose.” eric, whose influences include Bruce springsteen, Bob dylan, Paul simon and neil young, starts performing when the

More Orion Acts Announced I By David J. Spatz
f you were thinking about avoiding bader field in atlantic City the weekend of June 23-24 because you’re just not a fan of heavy metal music, you may want to reconsider your decision.
Last week, Metallica, the enduing metal band, announced more additions to the lineup for its first-ever, years-in-the-making orion Music + More festival. and not all of the 29 acts scheduled are metal bands. far from it. while the media may be branding orion a heavy metal marathon, Metallica is looking — and booking — with a broader audience in mind. Musical styles that will be represented include everything from brassy new orleans jazz to soul, punk, country, psychedelic and even comedy with a heavy metal twist. “we’ve had the idea of doing our own lifestyle festival with lots of diverse music and fun and games for years,” Metallica drummer and founding member Lars Ulrich said on the band’s web site. “finally this year all the practical ducks lined up in a row, and we are beyond psyched to bring orion to our fans, friends and the curious.” the curious and musically open minded who buy passes to the two-day event shouldn’t be disappointed. in addition to bands from a variety of genres such as Arctic Monkeys, Avenged Sevenfold, Modest Mouse, The Gaslight Anthem and F**ked Up, orion Music + More will include bands and solo artists who hardly fit the metal mold. the different musical genres represented at the festival reflect the diverse musical interests of the members of Metallica, the band said. Metallica got serious about planning the festival in December after its weeklong 30th anniversary celebration of the band’s debut at the fillmore in San francisco. Metallica and the promoter of the festival, Starr Hill Presents, have also made orion Music + More fairly affordable to the masses, too. a two-day “early bird” pass purchased now is $150. Do the math; with 29 acts already scheduled (and the possibility of more), that works out to around $5 per band). for those who consider money no object, ViP passes are available for $750. for that price, perks include unlimited access to a private lounge, space on a viewing platform with premium sight lines of the main stage, beer, wine and other beverages and catered food all day. here’s a preview of a few of the festival’s recently-added acts: Eric Church - about 10 years ago, this country music singer-songwriter, who makes his atlantic City headliner debut Saturday (March 17) at trump taj Mahal, was on the verge of quitting music, getting married and joining the corporate world. but music was more powerful than love, so he broke off his engagement and — bankrolled by his father for six months — moved to nashville to chase his dream. his debut LP Sinners Like Me spun off four top 20 singles, and his third studio LP Chief, released last year, not only hit the Like us:
facebook.com/ACWeekly
top of the country chart but also produced his first no. 1 single, “Drink in My hand.” Gary Clark Jr. - inspired by traditional blues artists like John Lee Hooker, T-Bone Walker and Lightnin’ Hopkins, but with a singularly distinctive sound, Clark’s guitar style has often been compared to that of Jimi Hendrix. he’s considered one of the leaders of the rock scene in austin, texas, and while he blends a variety of musical genres like rock, soul, blues, he has a broad and independent music streak that puts him in a category all by himself and makes him impossible to label as one particular kind of musician. Soul Rebels - this eight-man new orleans-based band of brass musicians was once referred to by the Village Voice as the “missing link between Public Enemy and Louis Armstrong.” their music celebrates the sounds synonymous with the Crescent City, but don’t mistake them for a cover band. they’ve taken both modern and classic new orleans jazz and infused it with r&b, funk, hip-hop and rap and even added vocals. “Most of our original [songs] have vocals,” group co-founder Lumar Leblanc said. “you wouldn’t have done that in a traditional brass band.” Jim Breuer’s Heavy Metal Comedy Tour - it’s no joke. then again, it is. the Saturday Night Live alum, who’s still trying to live down the “goat boy” character he created on the show, is serious about his music and is a big fan of heavy metal. his heavy metal show combines stand-up comedy with impressions of heavy metal singers and bands singing children’s songs (like Ozzy Osborne doing “London bridge is falling Down”). Roky Erickson - at 65, he might be the patriarch of orion Music + More. for sure he’s the most tortured soul in the lineup. he gained cult-hero status because throughout his troubled life, he’s made more headliners for his behavior and his mental problems than he has for his psychedelic music. a founding member of the band 13th Floor Elevators, he was busted in 1969 for possession of a single joint, copped an insanity plea and spent more than three years in a mental hospital. ten years after he was released, he signed an affidavit stating that a Martian had taken residence in his body, and he gradually disappeared from the music scene. by the end of the 1980s, he was little more than an obscure answer to a trivia question. but with the help of his brother, he began turning his life around and returned to music and in 2010 released his first album of all-original material in 14 years. n

ne of the selling points for the World series of poker Circuit events, which just finished up its latest stop at Caesars Atlantic City, is the chance to watch rising poker stars make a name for themselves. that was certainly true of Atlantic City based Dwyte pilgrim, who cut his teeth on the circuit just a couple of years ago (and played in this year’s Caesars events). this year’s Caesars circuit championship winner is ryan eriquezzo, a 27-year-old from Danbury Conn., who wins $191,194 in the $1,500 buy-in tournament. And like pilgrim, eriquezzo is another rising Atlantic City-based star. Well Atlantic City and Connecticut anyway. the win takes him over $600,000 in live tournament winnings and the vast majority of his cashes have come either in Atlantic City (at the Borgata mostly) or foxwoods in Connecticuit. still, his most notable tournament finish, other than this circuit win, was a 131st place finish at the 2010 Wsop Main event.
now that might all sound like a great career is underway, but eriquezzo is actually coming off a pretty bad year at the tables. the Wsop in its event coverage uses the poker term “variance,” which is just another way of saying sometimes you lose — a lot. But a nearly $200K win can really turn the variance around. “no doubt, this was the biggest win of my life,” eriquezzo told the Wsop after his win. “this was as tough a table as i’ve played and i could not be happier.” in the end he had outlasted a field of 635, a record for the Caesars circuit championship. eriquezzo came down to a heads-up contest with no. 2 finisher David Zeitlin, who has more than $1.3 million in tournament wins himself. Zeitlin, 38, from Brooklyn, is also a regular around town and has quite a few Atlantic City cashes on his record. though Zeitlin was short-stacked to eriquezzo at the start, it took more than an hour for a final hand to emerge. eriquezzo

rivered a king for a pair, beating Zeitlin’s pair of deuces and sending him to the rail — though with better than $118,000 for the second-place finish. though Atlantic City’s Wsop circuit stops aren’t one of the major draws on the circuit, this year’s events had a respectable turnout averaging more than 400 players for the 12 events. the largest turnout came in event 2, a $300 buy-in no limit event that attracted 887 players. the opening event also attracted more than 600 players. the circuit events also name a best allaround player, which went to Brandon Croft of sumter, south Carolina. Croft won two events (and was awarded two Wsop Circuit rings) and more than $60,000. the one other big cash on his record was a $40,000 win at the 2009 Caesars circuit events. Atlantic City’s own Chris reslock, who is sort of an omaha guru, had three cashes in the circuit events and had two final tables appearances. he had a second-place finish in omaha high-low, just missing out on a fifth lifetime circuit gold ring. in some other news, supporters of internet gaming in new Jersey got some good news Monday when a seton hall law professor told a state Assembly panel that he feels a public referendum wouldn’t be needed for the state to go ahead with a
plan to locate internet gaming in Atlantic City. John Wefing told the panel that he believes locating computer servers for internet gambling in the city would meet the state constitution’s provisions that allow for gambling only in Atlantic City. A bill to allow intra-state internet gambling — which usually means poker — to state residents was passed by the state legislature last year, but was vetoed by governor Christie who was worried that it would not be allowed under the state constitution. on Monday, Christie said he could conceivably sign a bill approving internet gambling without a referendum, as long as the state Attorney general’s office and other legal authorities he has consulted say it would be oK, according to CBs news. the issue is on the front burner again as nevada legislators seem close to approving their own plan for internet gambling. “it’s extremely important we get going now, so as to be able to compete with other states for online gaming and generate those revenues for our casinos,” said state sen. raymond lesniak, the main sponsor of the plan. A vote on new legislation could be held in the next few weeks, officials said. n

issed the st. Patty’s day Parade in a.C. on March 10? Not to fret, there’s lots more happening to celebrate this — the real st. Patrick’s day weekend. the new kid on the block (until Revel opens next month), Golden Nugget, is hosting a “Wear Green, Win Green” party on st. Patrick’s day (saturday, March 17) at the Live Bar. it will feature a Naughty Leprechaun Contest, live music by local favorite rockers seven stone, and dJ Michael James spinning hits between live sets. there will be a $500 grand prize for the sexiest green outfit, and Jameson drink specials will be the order of the night. the cover is $10 and doors open 9pm. What’s being called “atlantic City’s Official irish Festival” will happen saturday in Resorts Ballroom, with live entertainment, irish food and green beer. the fun starts at noon and goes to 7pm, and admission is free with a star Card ($5 without one). JoJo and scotty of 103.7 WMGM’s The Morning Edge will host the party. the festival will feature award-winning Celtic band Mythica, which will play three sets throughout the day. dubbed “Celtic fusionists,” Mythica (Melissa Cox, Matt smith, erin Flynn, tim Kelly and Michele McCann) fuses irish and scottish instruments like the mandolin, fiddle, bass and woodwinds with other influences and genres including hawaiian and south american surf rock to produce a completely unique sound. the band has played in atlantic City in the past, but will be making its Resorts debut. “We love playing in atlantic City,” says lead singer Cox. “the lively and fun atmosphere connects us and our music to the audience, and everybody has a great time.”
Seven Stone plays the Golden Nugget’s Live Bar on March 17 to warm up for the event, hit Resorts’ Night Fever dance club Friday night, March 16, for its irish Weekend Kick-off Party starting 9pm. Wear green and between 9-11pm admission is free. the Rí Rá Irish Pub in the Quarter at Tropicana is teaming up with the st. Baldrick’s Foundation for the sixth year to present “shave the Way to Conquer Kids’ Cancer.” the clippers will come out at noon saturday, compliments of the salon at tropicana, and spectators are welcome and encouraged to make donations to individuals or team shave-ees. all proceeds benefit the volunteer-driven st. Baldrick’s Foundation, which researches childhood cancer cures and helps prolong the lives of survivers. the Rí Rá will also host a great live music slate and a traditional irish menu. Live music starts thursday, March 15, with eleven eleven (starting 11pm) followed by the Riley Brothers from ireland on Friday (11pm) and saturday
(11am and 4pm). saturday’s entertainment will also include irish dancers at 3pm and the Rogues at 10pm. sunday morning at the Ri Ra will feature a “hangover Brunch” starting 10am. Other local hot spots hosting special st. Patrick’s day events include the East Bay Crab & Grille (6701 Black horse Pike in eht) on Friday night with dJ Bill and karaoke 6-11pm, a free hot-n-cold buffet, the tullamore dew Girls from 6-8pm, irish dancers, free giveaways and lots of food and drink specials. Cellar 32 in Brigantine (32nd st. and Revere Blvd.) will have a party with live music by John Bewley and drink specials including $10 irish trash cans, $4 irish car bombs, $5 irish martinis and $4 Guinness pints. also in Brigantine, St. George’s Pub (4282 harbor Beach Blvd.) will host a party from 6-11pm featuring bagpiper Michael F. Bell, drink specials and authentic fare like
corned beef and cabbage, bangers and mash, shepherd’s pie, and irish lamb stew in a bread bowl. Skelly’s Hi Point Pub (5 N. shore Rd.) in absecon will have bagpipers and karaoke, plus a special irish menu. Maynard’s Cafe (9306 amherst ave.) in Margate will have live music all day, plus food and drink specials. McGettigan’s 19th Hole in Galloway (500 s. New york Rd.) will feature the live music of Jamie and the Quietman from 2-6pm, the Baloney Brothers from 7-11pm, plus $4 shots and $5 pints. if parades are what inspire you and you missed atlantic City’s, two are taking place down in Cape May County on saturday and both are free to the public. the North Wildwood Parade starts at noon at City hall (901 atlantic ave.) with North Wildwood Police dept. leading the way followed by the V.F.W. Post 5941 Color Guard and other marchers. Music will be provided by the atlantic City Pipe and drum, the duffy string Band, the Gloucester City string Band, and school bands from Wildwood high school and the Margaret Mace school. the Sea Isle City Parade starts 3:30pm at 93rd street in townsend inlet and continues along Landis avenue to 63rd street in sea isle City. it will include live music by members of the atlantic City Fire department sandpiper Pipe Band, beauty queens, scout troops, antique vehicles, fire engines, ambulances and floats, as will a variety of mascots, including McGruff the Crime dog and eddie the eagle from the Cape May County sheriff’s department. Call your municipal offices, or see ads in this edition of Atlantic City Weekly for more st. Patrick’s day events. n

Great American Chicken Company, the ‘Home of the Deep-fried Pickle,’ opens at corner of 8th Street and Ocean Avenue. By Frank Gabriel
these crisp, habit-forming little nuggets get served with a spicy, house-made dijonnaise that is an ideal compliment for their kicky flavor. Like most other formulas here, it’s been worked, worried and fussed over. for another example, take the housemade cole slaw. it’s a hybrid of the two dressings —mayo or vinegar based — with which almost all slaws are tossed. Pirone calls his tangy blend “the best of both worlds” and says that it includes both mayo and vinegar, along with lemon, garlic, pepper, onion, celery, white cabbage and carrots. it’s available as one of three sides for chicken dinners, others being smashed potatoes and BBQ baked beans. these platters are available in increments of six, eight, 12 and 16 pieces, along New: crispy fried in Ocean City with traditional buttermilk biscuits. despite being a recent arrival to the more than a few options. ocean city area, Pirone seems intent on Like a variety of wraps — shrimp and becoming a fixture here. clam strip Po’ Boys among them — plus Unlike most local food businesses, he’ll Buffalo wings, shrimp and a “classic Philly- be open seven days a week throughout style” rib-eye cheesesteak. the year. from-scratch soups, like new england for a guy who admits that “cooking clam chowder, cream of broccoli and a pota- has been in my blood forever,” he seems to bean with bacon, which Pirone credits to thrilled to allow that “we’ve been very well “a 25-year-old recipe from my grandfather, accepted by ocean city.” are also available daily. in a town that bills itself as “America’s no matter what, you must sample the Greatest family resort,” GAcc is about as deep-fried pickles. family- oriented as possible. this Midwestern and southern delicacy, Wife christine and the couple’s 15-yearvirtually unheard of locally, is another of old son Anthony also work here partGAcc’s signature items. time. so much that Pirone has the slogan in fact, long-time friend and employee “home of the deep-fried pickle” emblazoned Alexis Byrne is the only person involved near the top of his printed bill of fare. not named Pirone. n phoTo bY CrAIg bILLoW

Terrific movies with an Irish brogue for a St. Patrick’s Day marathon By Lori Hoffman
W
hile i’m of German and Polish descent, i’ve always been fascinated by the irish culture, including the delightful lilt of an irish brogue, irish music and the history of the country, including “the Troubles” in northern ireland. With St. Patrick’s day coming up this weekend, i’ve put together a list of my favorite movies with an irish theme or locale. This list includes dramas, comedies, a drama with music, a movie with Sean Connery singing and, of course, the most popular irish-themed movie in american film history. in alphabetical order, here is a list of 11 movies that will help you feel both the luck of the irish and the sorrow of the irish. (dVr alert: Shake Hands With the Devil at 2:15pm and Young Cassidy at 6pm will be shown on Turner Classic movies on march 17.)
Cal (1984) A romantic melodrama set against the backdrop of the politically charged era of the Troubles. John Lynch stars as a man who is a reluctant member of the Ira involved in the killing of a policeman. he then falls in love with marcella (helen mirren) the widow of said policeman. The cast also includes ray mcanally and Donal mccann and features a fabulous soundtrack by mark Knopfler and was directed by Pat O’Connor.
The Commitments (1991) a delightful comedy-drama with music from alan Parker (Fame, Midnight Express, Evita, Pink Floyd The Wall) about a group of young Dubliners who have fallen in love with american soul music and decide to form the hardest-working band in Ireland. The soundtrack was more popular in America than the film.
Darby O’Gill and the Little People (1959) This isn’t really a great movie, but it’s priceless for introducing us to Scotsman Sean connery as a singing Irishman. Plus, I had to include one movie with leprechauns and a pot o’gold didn’t I?
Intermission (2003)

an Irish film in the style of robert altman featuring dozens of characters whose relationships are spun together in ways one doesn’t expect, or as the description on imdb.com notes: “a variety of losers in Dublin have harrowingly farcical intersecting stories of love, greed and violence.” The incredible cast includes colin Farrell, Kelly macdonald (Boardwalk Empire), cillian murphy and Colm Meaney. The Magdalene Sisters (2002) actor Peter mullan turned writer-director for this harrowing drama based on the true story of the magdalene Sisters, nuns who took “wayward Irish girls,” some pregnant, some just considered sluts, and turn them into slave labor for the order’s lucrative laundry service. and this wasn’t a turn of the century drama, we are talking the mid-1960s when this physical and mental abuse took place.
The Quiet Man (1952) Director John Ford paid tribute to his Irish roots with the help of John Wayne, maureen O’hara, Victor mcLaglen and Barry Fitzgerald in one of the best films ever made. I don’t have to tell you about the plot or the greatest bare-knuckles fight ever put on film.
The Secret of Roan Inish (1994) Director John Sayles (Lone Star, Eight Men Out) wrote and directed this Irish fairy tale about a small fishing village in Donegal, Ireland where legend has it that there are Selkies, seals who can turn into humans.
Shake Hands With the Devil (1959) James cagney stars in this 1920s-era drama about an american (Don murray) caught up in the violence of the Ira. With Dana Wynter, Glynis Johns and a very young richard harris.
The Snapper (2003) Stephen Frears directs this hilarious drama about an Irish family that is thrown into an uproar when 20-year-old Sharon gets knocked up and refuses to name the father. With colm meaney as the father of the clan.
Waking Ned Devine (1998) another hilarious movie about a small village in Ireland where the titled character drops dead after learning he’s won the Irish lottery. The town conspires to keep his death a secret so they can collect the money. With Ian Bannen, David Kelly and Fionnula Flanagan.
HEADLINERS
Young Cassidy (1965)
