ALBUM WEEK of the

Stockton Summer Concert Series Moves to Mainland By Ray Schweibert

T

he fit seems as perfect as the acts are diverse. Richard Stockton College of NJ’s summer concert series, now in its 14th year, will bring three nationally renowned headline acts to the Atlantic County Institute of Technology (ACIT)’s new state-of-the-art, 974-seat performing arts center. The series will begin with The Lettermen (“Turn Around, Look at Me,” “Theme From A Summer Place” and others) on Monday, July 21. On Monday, July 28, it’s Micky Dolenz, representing one-quarter of the TV pop band The Monkees. The series wraps up with Dickey Betts & Great Southern on Monday, Aug. 4. Betts is a founding member of the Allman Brothers Band who penned such hits as “Ramblin’ Man,” “Blue Sky,” “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” and “Jessica.” “If you look at the demographics of the three acts, they are very different,” says Stockton marketing director Suzé DiPietro. “We wanted to make sure we have something for everybody and to appeal to as many of the constituents out there as possible.” “This is an exciting time here,” says Dr. Phil Guenther, superintendent of ACIT. “We’re thrilled to have such legendary performers come to our school and be part of the opening of our performing-arts center. ... Our partnership with Stockton is one that is longstanding. They’ve helped us develop curriculums that provide a link to higher education for our students. And now this theater allows us to give our students who are in the performing arts academy some real-life experiences in hospitality and maybe even more, as we work through the details of putting on these great performances.” Tickets to all events are $37 and may be ordered online at stockton.edu/pac or by calling the Stockton box office at 652-9000. Box office hours are Monday through Thursday, 10am-2pm, at the Stockton PAC, and 90 minutes before each performance at ACIT. Parking is free. Show times are 8pm.

Mr. Mature America Pageant in Ocean City By Lori Hoffman

P

ageants are dominated by the ladies, but the City of Ocean City has decided to change that perception with the first pageant in the known universe that honors men of a certain age. Are you a male 60 or older and willing to entertain and educate a friendly audience? Then the Mr. Mature America Pageant Wants You! It’s free to enter with prizes for winners and T-shirts for all contestants. To be a contestant in this historic pageant and perhaps become the world’s first Mr. Mature America, call 525-9300 during working hours, in the evening 364-4010 or email msoifer@hotmail.com. The pageant takes place at the Ocean City Music Pier, Moorlyn Terr. and the Boardwalk, Ocean City on Saturday, March 22, at 7pm. Tickets are. $10, with proceeds benefitting the Ocean City Food Cupboard and the Philippine Relief Fund. Arrive early and enjoy the music of the Bubba Mac Blues Band at 6:30pm. The format of Mr. Mature America will be a traditional one, with an opening number followed by each contestant introducing himself sporting a classic bathing suit. A talent, poise and question session will follow. Instead of a pre-pageant interview, all contestants will take the microphone and discuss the topic “I Remember When,” expressing their experiences on how it felt to grow up in their particular era. The pageant format will welcome the talents of singers, instrumentalists, hobbyists and story tellers. There will be a number of hilarious group routines and special guests. At the same time, the pageant is designed to emphasize the contributions of senior citizens, many of whom are still working and retirees who constitute a huge volunteer resource for local organizations including the city.

The War on Drugs ‘Lost in the Dream’ (Secretly Canadian) hilly’s the War on Drugs may have lost founding member Kurt Vile a few years back, but the atmospheric band’s new album Lost in the Dream is the band’s best set yet. Even better than 2011’s outstanding and acclaimed Slave Ambient. Chief songwriter Adam Granduciel has penned a collection of songs that could be considered extensions of the classic-rock works of Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen with the stripped-down pieces sharing a “blue-collar” / fighting for the working class theme. The simple chord structures lay behind plenty of sonic surprises built in, which show the band’s Sonic Youth influence, for example. The opener “Under Pressure” could have been a radio hit in the 1980s, while the beautiful “An Ocean Between the Waves” cements Granduciel among today’s most compelling and sensitive songwriters. While the band was on tour in 2012 it started working on the 10 songs presented here; they all fit together perfectly ala a jigsaw puzzle of dreams, frustrations, late-night blues and killer production. — Jeff Schwachter

Travel Channel Names Atlantic City for ‘Best Beach Boardwalk ’ By Jeff Schwachter

C

atching up on some great news for Atlantic City from a couple weeks back. The Travel Channel’s Annual Best Beach Awards of 2014 has crowned Atlantic City as having the “Best Beach Boardwalk” in the world. That’s right — the world. A.C. was chosen among such popular world-wide destinations as Jamaica, Fiji, the British Virgin Islands, Brazil, Iceland, California’s Malibu Beach and Florida’s Clearwater Beach. “Still standing after Superstorm Sandy, there’s never been a better time to visit the Atlantic City Boardwalk, America’s first boardwalk and the home of Miss America,” said the Travel Channel’s Senior Interactive Producer Sara Gilliam in a press statement regarding Atlantic City’s historic wooden thoroughfare. The CRDA and its Tourism District / Special Improvement District and Convention Center Division points out that Atlantic City’s Boardwalk features “four miles of sun and fun just steps away from free, clean sandy beaches. Thanks to an expanded Ambassador program, visitors to the city will be treated to a safe, informative and pleasurable experience. Visitors will also find an eclectic mix of amenities and activities along the Boardwalk from bicycle rentals, free volleyball courts and miniature golf to world-class casino hotels, dining, shopping and entertainment. More than 50 convenient and handicapped-accessible walkways and ramps lead to the beach where several beach bars, such as the new Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville and LandShark Bar & Grill, are a popular summertime hang out. On a nightly basis, free 3D light and sound shows defy one’s imagination on the façade of Historic Boardwalk Hall while many styles of live entertainment may be enjoyed at several public venues up and down the Boardwalk.” Earlier in February, Atlantic City was named the fourth “Most Romantic City in the USA” by OpenTable.com. The city is currently nominated in a poll to select New Jersey’s Top 10 Beaches for eco-tourism, family vacations and day trips. You can vote for Atlantic City at njtoptenbeaches.org. see more online @

I

n my 21 years of critiquing beer, I’ve seen monumental changes in the industry, in addition to intense growth. In 1993, there were about 500 American breweries operational, the largest number since World War II. Today, that number is approaching 3,000 with several hundred additional applications on record. Recognize that most breweries are very small, in terms of volume. That also indicates distribution normally is limited to a relatively narrow radius surrounding the site. For that reason, the opportunity to try different beers is reduced, unless one travels near those breweries. Even those companies that distribute to multiple states are restrained. There are beers I can get in Pennsylvania, for example, that aren’t sold here… and vice versa. Let’s travel back a couple of decades to explore regional beer selections. Boston Beer (Samuel Adams) was groundbreaking. The company, started around 1984, struck it rich with their flagship flavor, Boston Lager. Frankly, it was so different from all other beers likely to be found at a pub or restaurant, that I initially had difficulty accepting it. Yes, it was a lager, but just about every other beer on tap was a lager. The difference was in flavor. Boston Lager seemed so distinct that I questioned its public acceptance. As it turns out, that should not have been a concern. Boston Lager has become a star and the company wavers back and forth with Yuengling for the title of largest Americanowned brewery. Recognizing the importance of the Sam Adams brand, along with other major players in the industry, such as Sierra Nevada, Anchor, Brooklyn and a few others, people were on the lookout for new flavors. The new breed of American brewers looked to the locations around the world for guidance and they found it in places such as Belgium, England, Germany and the Czech Republic, among others. These creative men and women analyzed the styles that made these locals noteworthy and, in the true American tradition, added their own signature to those beverages. For so many years, India Pale Ales moved to the forefront of the list, attracting the attention of millions of enthusiasts. Surveys continue to suggest this type of beer, characterized by a distinct bitterness because of an intense hop presence, remains the flavor of choice. Recent years have seen new varieties of

facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly

beer developed. You can research them via several sources, including the Beer Judge Certification Program, the Brewers Association, Beer Advocate and others. The approved list continues to evolve. You’ll note references to not only a beer’s flavor, but also how it is made, the color, ingredients and other factors. In its purest state, beer consists of only four ingredients, grain (generally barley), yeast, hops and water. Yet, the manipulation of these, coupled with the addition of adjuncts, has made this a complex refreshment, to the point that I become astounded with each new wrinkle that is introduced to the brewing process. People like myself regularly are asked to identify the next big trend in the beer trade and we often base our answers on drinkers’ preferences and the thoughts of those employed by breweries. A friend, New York-based journalist Peter LaFrance, very recently chatted with both brewers and company representatives to get their slant on where the industry may be heading over the next year or so. Responses were varied, but notable. Here is what some of Peter learned. “Session beers will be hot.” (Session beers are flavorful, but low alcohol beverages, favored by those who are drinking at a pub, but want to be certain they remain under the alcohol consumption limit when driving). “America’s love affair with hops will lessen as people seek more balance in their choices.” “I expect to see more light fruit beers, especially during summer months.” “More breweries will add ciders to their portfolios.” And finally, one person, the head of brewing operations of a recognizable company added a general prediction: “There will be a slowdown, if not a total shutdown, of new craft breweries coming online. There just isn’t enough of everything, demand, shelf space, human resources, money, etc., to keep opening small breweries.” That final statement may have validity. The growth in the beer business is overwhelming. How long can it last? Regardless, if you are a lover of beer, this is your time to explore and experiment. Because of the flood of breweries and the new, unusual flavors they produce, take the time to try them and, hopefully, add to your palate. You don’t eat the same foods every day, why drink the same beer? ■

ore than 30 years ago, when I was just getting my feet wet as a television host, David Brenner — the Philly bornand-bred comedian who died of cancer last week at age 78 — sued me. We stayed pals anyway. As the entertainment columnist and critic for The Press of Atlantic City at the time, I’d been a guest on many TV shows, so being in front of the camera wasn’t new. But now I was asking the questions instead of answering them. I’d been hired to co-host my first show, Nightlife, which was airing statewide on the old Cable Television Network of New Jersey, better known as CTN. The show originated from Atlantic City and was sponsored by the Sands Hotel & Casino. My co-host was former Miss New Jersey Lynn Hackerman Weidner, whose husband, Bill, was president of the Sands. The show featured mostly interviews with celebrities performing around town, but primarily the ones playing the Sands’ Copa Room. Brenner, who had an exclusive contract with the Sands, was a guest on one of our early shows. But that wasn’t why he sued. After a couple of years, the show was canceled — one of the occupational hazards of television. I moved on to another show on CTN and put Nightlife behind me. Or so I thought. One day in 1986, I received a subpoena from a law firm from northern New Jersey informing me that I was named in a lawsuit by King World, the syndication giant whose shows then included TV’s two most popular and widely-viewed programs: The Oprah Winfrey Show and Wheel of Fortune. Turns out that King World was syndicating the latest entry in the late-night talk show war, which was dominated by Johnny Carson’s The Tonight Show and, in distant second place, The Late Show starring Joan Rivers, who, ironically, had just finished a very successful comedy tour with ... David Brenner. So why was our little former show — the key word here is former — being sued by King World? King World was getting ready to launch a 30-minute, late-night talk show called (drum roll please) ... Nightlife. And David Brenner was the host. As part of their due diligence, one of King World’s attorneys discovered that there already was a show using the name Nightlife. And that was a problem — for us, not for them. Seems that the geniuses that hired me to cohost Nightlife never bothered to trademark the name of the show. Therefore, our Nightlife was infringing on their trademark, because King

World had taken the trouble of trademarking the name. Long story short, the suit was withdrawn once it was discovered that our show had been off the air for a couple of years. But the producers received a stern warning that if they wanted to resurrect the show, they’d better find a new name. (Even if they had decided to relaunch the show, I probably wouldn’t have worked with them. Not after they accidentally erased two shows that we’d shot with stars that rarely did local TV — Harry Belafonte and Kris Kristofferson.) Naturally, Brenner knew nothing about the suit. But I made sure to tell him the next time he played Atlantic City. We both had a good laugh about it, especially when I reminded him that our Nightlife lasted for two years, which was one year longer than his Nightlife. That’s one of my many David Brenner stories. Another was far more serious than a silly lawsuit. For years, Brenner waged a legal battle to gain full custody of his young son Cole. It was about as bitter a fight as you can imagine, with all sorts of salacious things about both sides surfacing in the media, most of them unfounded. It took several years, but during the summer of 1992 Brenner prevailed and won full custody of his son. He picked up Cole at summer camp and drove straight to Atlantic City to play a gig at the Claridge Casino Hotel. I invited Brenner on our TV show, which was airing on CTN and was called The David Spatz Show (figuring no one could sue me over using that name, unless I wanted to sue myself). Since Brenner was a pal, he immediately agreed. We talked about comedy, of course, but then the topic shifted to his custody battle. Brenner opened up about how much he loved and missed Cole, who was standing just off camera. Then he motioned for Cole to sit down next to him, and his son squeezed between us. I haven’t seen that show in 20 years, but I distinctly remember Cole Brenner wearing a black T-shirt with a skull and crossbones. It was a funny moment between father and son, but it was also incredibly poignant. I remember hoping I’d keep my emotions in check. I was the father of two young kids at the time, and I couldn’t imagine losing custody of them for a few minutes, let alone several years. David Brenner may have been one of the most influential comedians of his time. He made observational comedy an art form, and without him paving the way, guys like Jerry Seinfeld and Richard Lewis may have never gotten the breaks that made them stars. Sadly, Atlantic City’s casinos stopped playing Brenner a while ago on the very wrong assumption that his best years — and his audience — had passed him by. If you saw him on TV or in Vegas in recent years, that was obviously not the case. n

We are so proud of you for all you have set out to do and for all you have accomplished. We are so lucky to have you in our family.

It’s incredible being selected as one of this year’s Top 40 Under 40 because it goes hand in hand with what my personal and business missions are all about — positive change for our community,” says 10th annual Top 40 under 40 honoree Alexandra Conover, owner and founder of Grace & Glory Yoga in Northfield. “All of the honorees are helping our community to progress, and I am honored to be included as one of them.” This year marks 10 years that the Greater Jaycess and Atlantic City Weekly have partnered to honor 40 of the brightest, communityoriented and inspring young leaders in the Atlantic City region. And it’s a great group of individuals, all deserving of the recognition they’ve earned through hard work, volunteerism, entrepreneurship and other oustanding achievements within our area. The Jaycees and AC Weekly have now honored 400 individuals since the project started in 2005. This year’s group of honorees will be celebrated at one of the year’s biggest parties, taking place at MIXX at Borgata on Friday, March 21. AC Weekly — as we do each year — reached out to this year’s Top 40 Under 40 (see our March 6 issue online at acweekly.com to read about each of this year’s honorees) to ask what it means to be honored by and within their community.

facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly

“It is truly an honor to be recognized along with such accomplished individuals from our area,” says John DeRichie, a project architect at SOSH Architects. “It’s admirable to see these young entrepreneurs find success within their respective professions while still finding the time to give back to their communities. I’m proud to be a part of the Top 40 Under 40 family.” Aubrey Gerhardt, founder of the South Jersey Poets Collective, which holds open poetry nights the fourth Wednesday of each month at Atlantic City’s Dante Hall, says: “After two years of providing free poetry nights open to the entire community at Dante Hall in Atlantic City on a monthly basis, I’m so excited that more people are starting to take notice. The poet in me is almost as stoked as the librarian in me. The public library has become a vibrant place of knowledge, entertainment and possibility that plays an integral role in the development of our communities. I’m thrilled to have this opportunity to refresh the public’s perceptions of libraries and poetry, and to remind everyone that reading is sexy. Thank you to Atlantic City Weekly and to the Jaycees for shedding light on the efforts being made in our neighborhoods to make South Jersey a special place to live. I encourage all of your readers to attend SJ Poets’ next “World Above: Free Poetry Night” at Dante Hall on March 26 at 7pm, and to revisit the local library!” Stephen Del Monte, founder of CONTINUED ON PG. 22

DelMoSports, says he was surprised at being honored. “Truthfully, I was surprised,” says Del Monte. “As far as I’m concerned, South Jersey is a hub for bright, young entrepreneurs, and to be recognized with 39 other incredibly talented individuals is a humbling experience.” Jaime Angelini, the director of consumer services for the Mental Health Association in Atlantic County says she’s honored to be a part of the 10th annual group. “I was very surprised to learn that I had been selected to join this year’s Top 40 Under 40,” says Angelini. “It’s truly an honor. I am in such good company and excited to be part of the 10-year anniversary.” Jerry Eisenband, the regional public relations manager for Caesars Entertainment, says: “To be given such a prestigious honor by Atlantic City Weekly and the Greater Atlantic City Jaycees is, in a single word, overwhelming. The fact that my name appears next to the likes of such dedicated community contributors as Erika Moore and Joe Muldoon, as well as the rest of my fellow Top 40 Under 40 recipients, is quite a lot to take in. This city has given me more than I ever could have imagined when I arrived almost three and a half years ago — within its beautiful beaches I found my wife, my career, and cultivated lifelong friendships. Atlantic City is a special destination, one that I will always consider home.”

Meanwhile, both Moore and Muldoon say they feel honored to have been chosen with the other honorees. “It is truly an honor to be selected with such a diverse group of professionals,” says Erika Moore, CRM manager for the Eastern Division of Caesars Entertainment and the program director of Youth Exposure. “I didn’t expect to be honored at all, but it is nice when someone else thinks you should. I think the honor will expand my opportunities going forward and create new ones [and] I am extremely excited to see everyone at the MIXX in addition to being honored in the presence of my family and friends.” Joe Muldoon, who is the executive chef and owner of Roberta’s by Joe Muldoon in Northfield, adds: “It feels incredible to be a part of this distinguished list of people, especially in the area that I have chosen to build my career and try to make a name for myself. In the food and beverage industry alone, anytime I can be on the same list as Chef Michael Williams and Chef Anthony Amoroso, I’ll gladly welcome it with open arms. I do realize I have much work to do to reach their magnitude of success, but I feel that this will be a great start. “Being honored this year has confirmed

the notion that I must give back to the community. I had first conceived this thought after “Operation Holiday Cheer” when Roberta’s and Longport Media hosted a dinner for 50 recruits from the U.S. Coast Guard this past Christmas. I couldn’t believe how many people I did or didn’t know that called and offered to volunteer their help for this event. When I think of some of the other events that I have been a part of where chefs get together to raise money for foundations and scholarships, I realize that they were some of the best experiences of my life that not only influenced me as a young chef, but raised money for great causes too. In return, that notion I think will change my life and career for the better.” Tom Morgan, morning radio show host on SoJO 104.9, says he is humbled to be a part of this year’s Top 40. “I’m very humbled,” says Morgan, whose family will be coming in from Virginia for the event at MIXX. “I hosted the award ceremony last year, and I made it my goal to be a part of the Top 40 Under 40 someday. I didn’t expect it to happen the following year. The reality won’t set until Friday night at the Borgata. “One thing that will never change is my humility. My first program director in Knoxville, Tenn., taught me the importance to stay humble in this business, and if you do that, you will go far. If you told me 10 years ago that I would be hosting a morning show in Atlantic City, I would have laughed. I’m very blessed. However, in regards to a sense of volunteerism and community, this award will motivate me to do more. I look at the 39 other proud recipients, and I ask myself: ‘Why am I not doing THAT?’ There’s so much more to do, and I hope to be a part of it.” Mia Chiarella, founder of A Gift from Gia and an executive chef at Gia Restaurant says: “I am so honored to be nominated and accepted into Atlantic City Weekly’s Top 40 Under 40. It is amazing to be among the best of the best in Atlantic County and I am most grateful. I couldn’t be more thankful to be a part of such a wonderful event.” Ocean City’s Michael J. Hartman, founding artisitic director fo the Greater Ocean City Theatre Company, has similar sentiments. “The party is going to be an absolute blast! I imagine the energy will be high because everyone honored will be surrounded by the special people from their lives who want to celebrate the accomplishments of their top 40 Under 40 honoree.

>> CONTINUED FROM PG. 22 Bring all of that energy together and MIXX is going to be the place to be!” Hartman also feels proud to be among this year’s distinguished group of people. “It truly is such an honor to be included on a list that highlights the many aspects that make the Greater Atlantic City region so special and unique. After reading over the accomplishments of my fellow honorees and past recipients I can’t help to feel a sense of pride to be among such brilliant people.” Glenn Robbins, principal at the Northfield Community Middle School, says: “Being nominated for the Top 40 Under 40 is truly an honor. I am fortunate to work at the Northfield Community School where my superintendent, fellow principal, staff, students and parents support my goals in making NCS truly one of the best schools in the state.” Nick Sena, Stockton College’s Leadership Annual Giving coordinator says he was excited as soon as he found out he had been selected. “When I learned I was being recognized as part of the 40 Under 40, I immediately felt excited, honored and proud,” he says. “Graduating from Stockton, working at the college and remaining heavily involved in Habitat for Humanity Atlantic County may be the reasons I am part of this dynamic group of leaders, however, my family, friends and colleagues who have helped me get to where I am today deserve the credit. I wear this badge of pride to recognize and thank them. Congratulations to all fellow recipients this year and I will use the recognition as motivation to continue making a positive impact.” Angela Lang-Brindisi, another honoree passionate about her community, says the honor is special for a very personal reason. “The Top 40 award was a great way to welcome me back to Atlantic County, after spending three years in New York City,” says Lang-Brindisi, a Conflict Law Guardian for Atlantic County. “I was honored to receive the award and I hope it brings attention to the amazing non-profit wildlife rehabiliation centers I support — the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine and Wild Bird Fund in New York City. I am pleased that the award also brought a smile to my mother’s face, who was recently diagnosed with cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy.” Justin Tinel, co-founder of Ground Swell, says he is grateful for the support he’s received along the path he has chosen for his career. “I’m honored to have been named one of Atlantic City Weekly’s Top 40 Under 40 of 2014! I would like to extend a special thanks to all my friends, family, co-workers, colleagues, and everyone who has supported me. Your support is truly appreciated.” Dawn Konrady, the director of the Child Welfare Education Institute at Stockton College, says she also thankful for being honored and the support she has received since. “It feels great to be a Top 40 Under 40, especially during the 10th anniversary year of it,” she says. “The outpouring of congratulations and support has been much appreciated and heart warming. I’ve gotten e-mails or calls from people who I haven’t spoken to in a while who just wanted to say congrats and that they were so proud to see everything that I’ve accomplished thus far. It’s also been great for my parents because many of their friends have done the same to them, so it shows them that they’ve done a pretty good job raising me.” Konrady, like many of the honorees didn’t expect the recognition. “I didn’t expect to be honored in this capacity because I just go about my business and do my work,” she says. “I work hard and those who need to know what I do or are on the receiving end of my work know that as well. I am not one of those individuals who needs major recognition or acknowledgment because I always know that I’m doing my best and giving my all. Though, at the end of the day, it is always nice to know that someone else out there has paid attention to what you’ve been doing and think that you’re worth receiving this type of award. “I am very excited about the party on the 21st at MIXX. I have heard great things about the event in general. I’ve never been to one, so I’m looking forward to a great night and celebrating all our accomplishments with the 39 other people who have been chosen.” Charles Weeks Jr., a certified financial planner and founder and president of Barrister Wealth Management, LCC, agrees: “I am flattered to be chosen for AC Weekly’s Top 40 Under 40, especially when you look at the accomplishments of my fellow honorees. A recognition like this serves as a reminder that hard work, dedication and perseverance does pay off.” Rebecca C. Lafferty, an attorney at Cooper Levenson, says she was quite a bit surprised to find out she had been selected to a part of this year’s Top 40. “I was very surprised when I received the phone call that I was chosen as one of the Top 40 Under 40 honorees,” she says. “Receiving this award motivates me to want to continue to volunteer as much of my spare time as possible to assisting community organizations and causes, as well as expanding the scope of my volunteer activities. “It is an honor to be recognized among such a successful and talented group of individuals.” Nathan Morell, whose wife Kristin is also a 2014 Top 40 Under 40 honoree says “it feels great to be recognized for

I knew going into the field that the financial and mass media recognition would be limited and I was cool with that, because that is not what it is about. “My hope is that this award brings attention to the great work being done at Stockton’s Wellness Center as well as to the amazing job Active Minds is doing on campus to reduce mental-health stigma and suicide.” David Pringle, an SSS counselor at Atlantic Cape Community College’s Counseling & Support Services, says he was overwhelmed when he first heard that he was selected as a a Top 40 Under 40 honoree. “I sat in the car for a few minutes with cough medicine for my wife thinking to myself, ‘I think they have the wrong person; I will double check on Monday.’ Once I confirmed that this it was real, I was overwhelmingly amazed to know that the work I do is being recognized by members of the community I serve in. I am deeply humbled and grateful to those that nominated me and extend my deepest heartfelt thanks to my wife, family and everyone that has contributed to my life personally and professionally.” Pringle’s colleague at Atlantic-Cape, Joy A. Jones, says how thankful she is for her support base and the honor. “The honor of Top 40 Under 40 reminds me of how fortunate I am to be supported by my colleagues, friends, family, and community. I am so thankful for my Atlantic Cape Community College family, and I am thankful for my husband, Keith Carmack, and his support. The two best things that have ever happened to me are being hired by Atlantic Cape and marrying Keith, and the Top 40 Under 40 honor is a product of these previous two accomplishments.” Jones’ family is also coming in from out of state for the party at Borgata. “I am so excited to attend the party on March 21 at the MIXX,” she says. “My parents are coming from Kentucky to visit and keep our baby so my husband and I can enjoy the night with some great friends and fellow Top 40ers.” Randee Rosenfeld, owner of Photography By Randee, says: “It is a great honor to have been nominated as part of the 10th annual Top 40 Under 40. I work hard everyday to achieve the goals I set; from a college internship at Walt Disney World, Orlando, to owning a successful local photography studio. I so happy that my accomplishments have been recognized within our community.” Lee Sanchez, director of food & beverage at Harrah’s Resort Atlantic City says he shares the honor with his family and team at work. “It is a honor to be recognized by Atlantic City Weekly alongside so many great people,” he says. “My achievements would CONTINUED ON PG. 28

not be possible if it was not for the hard work and dedication of my team, the mentorship of so many great leaders in my life and, of course, the support of my family. Ventnor’s Tara Van Ness, founder of the Bright Light Yoga Project and an instructor and studio manager at Grace & Glory Yoga says she is proud of her community. “It’s exciting to honored among a group of such inspiring individuals doing such good work for the community,” she says. “I love the passion and energy that we all bring to South Jersey and it makes me feel so fortunate to call this place my home.” Town Hall ventures Founder & CEO Bruce Weekes says the honor is a blessing. “I felt extremely humbled and honored to be recognized as one of the region’s Top 40 Under 40,” says Weekes. “To join such a rich heritage of young dynamic leaders is truly a blessing. As the leader of start-up company, I spend a lot of time chartering the strategic direction of my firm, so it’s nice to take a moment to actually reflect on everything we’ve accomplished thus far.” Nicholas Palmisano, partner and co-

founder of 11th Floor Creative Group, also brings up his hard work with regard to the company he and his business partner founded in Atlantic City. “I feel honored to be chosen as one of the Top 40 Under 40,” he says. “I and my business partner Brendan Jerome have been working very hard over the past seven years to build a company that we could both be proud of, so to receive recognition for that work is very fulfilling. Also, to be counted among such a great group of people, which includes not only this year’s winners, but all the past year’s winners is very humbling. “I didn’t expect to be honored for the Top 40 Under 40 this year,” he adds. “It was something that I have aspired to since attending the 2009 Top 40 party, so to actually achieve the honor now is really remarkable. [The] party at MIXX is going to be a great time. I already got to speak with several other Top 40 honorees at the Seaview event last Tuesday, so I am looking forward to meeting the rest on Friday. Plus, it’s a good reason to celebrate not only the honorees, but also the future of Atlantic City.” ■

Buttermilk bleu cheese dressing, Buffalo sauce and celery garnish adorned. Crunchy, mildly spicy and with plenty of umami tingle delivered via Roquefort and bleu, this is an item management should consider adding to the regular menu. I followed with an outsized filet cheese steak ciabatta; tender, grilled filet tips, exotic mushrooms, onions and melted provolone on a crisp baguette, with crisp waffle fries. The freshly-baked bread was stuffed with probably close to half-pound of tender, seared beef cubes, an upscale take on Philly’s traditional favorite. moisture for a mountain of creamy polenta and baby beans serving as foundation. Probably one of the best overall dishes we’ve sampled in 2014. Both desserts were also outstanding, beginning with butterscotch pie, golden and decadent, ladled with warm chocolate sauce. But my partner’s Red Velvet waffles closed like a great relief pitcher striking out the side in the 9th. A pair of lovely crimson mini-waffles, tilted sideways on popcorn and buttermilk ice creams with chocolate malt sauce. ‘Nuff said? My next excursion was shorter, just across the bridge from Ocean City to Margate’s Bocca. This seashore Italian concept has become one of our preferred casual haunts. My lunch app, Buffalo chicken rangoons, were three crispy wonton skins stuffed with blended chicken breast, buffalo sauce, Roquefort, mozzarella and

ur 2014 Restaurant Week got off to a slow start, thanks to another howling snowstorm, this one arriving Sunday, March 2. Wednesday, once flakes cleared, we headed out for the first time. The chosen destination, the Atlantic City Country Club, was unique since we never actually dined here, only attended functions. Our intrepidness was rewarded on this frosty evening with one of the best R.W. experiences ever. It began with a quiet, half-filled dining space — surprising since the parking was packed from an event in another roomand immediate, superb service. A pair of veteran ladies worked together, one doubling quite effectively as bartender. The space itself, clubby and wood-toned, couldn’t have been more hospitable. Food began with an exceptional piece of pork belly. Advertised as slow-roasted, its fatty exterior beautifully caramelized, the would-be bacon sat on a scallion pancake with hoisin BBQ sauce plus a tangy scoop of Napa cabbage salad alongside. My dining partner went a simpler, no less engaging route, opting for one of chef Ed Daggers signature items, shrimp and crawfish gumbo. Authentically presented on rice, this southern classic was a steamy salvo aimed directly at the heart of our seemingly endless winter. I chose a grilled duck breast entrée, fanned slices of succulent, mid-rare bird accessorized by a dynamic savory sauté of apples, dried apricots, mission figs and caramelized onions. An earthy Armagnac pan reduction provided just the right

patrons were similarly queued up in the bar and lounge. Lunch here is more than a repast, it’s an official happening. After a brief wait, we ascended several twisty flights of stairs to the rarified air of their third floor wine cellar dining room. The angled space, once apartments of former owners the Latz family, offers an unapologetic dose of genuine Atlantic City nostalgia, lovingly updated. We began with two comforting bowls of soup, mine a rugged, rustic bean blend and my companion’s their famed crab and corn chowder. Following were a pair of authentic Jersey shore specialties; a lusty crab cake sandwich with remoulade and local flounder-based fish and chips, elevated by pairing with smashed fingerlings. A pretty dessert trio sampler; mini banana cream tart, cheesecake and a square of fudge-like chocolate ganache, demonstrated the kitchen’s versatility. Our final adventure was a trip to Luke Palladino’s Seasonal Italian Cuisine in Linwood’s charming, park-like Central Square. The evening’s featured soup a steamy, bright pink beet blend finished with a scoop of wilted cabbage and golden raisins, delighted our companion. My app, crostini, were two bias-cut slices of crusty bread topped with chick pea puree, roasted peppers and arugula. Golden tilefish, a species underrepresented hereabouts, brought a clean, tasty fillet perched on cannolini bean puree, twin stripes of pesto and more golden raisins. Spaghetti alla vongole arrived as a dozen quality littlenecks scattered atop a turban of pasta. Whole cherry tomatoes, garlic, parsley and basil all nicely played supporting roles. Both seafood and spaghetti were a bit dry, diminishing an otherwise above-average plate. While we don’t condone pasta swimming in sauce, this would have benefitted from an extra few ounces of clam liquor. n

Peace, Love & Classic Rock

Flash back to what was arguably the most influential decade in music history, as the Sixties Rock Experience visits Golden Nugget for two shows Saturday night, March. 22. By Ray Schweibert • feedback@acweekly.com

T

through its growing pains a little bit. When you’re carrying a cast of 13 to 15 people there are ever-changing movable parts that have to be fine-tuned and sometimes replaced to get where you want to be with a production, and the people who are with the cast now are just absolutely phenomenal. They’re really, really talented.” Sixties music legends celebrated in the show include Mick Jagger, Robert Plant, Joe Cocker, Ian Anderson (of Jethro Tull), Feliz Cavalieri (The Rascals), Justin Hayward (Moody Blues), Lulu and Dusty Springfield rounding out the Brits; and Jim Morrison (pictured), Linda Ronstadt and Grace Slick rounding out the Yanks. “We’ve got a couple of people in the show who have gone over and beyond to duplicate the look, not just imitate the voice,” says Weinlein. “They really took it to another level. [The show] doesn’t have that polished feel that you get when you’re seeing something like Legends in Concert, which is fantastic but where everything is perfectly synchronized or choreographed with dancers and what not — this is meant to be in the raw format of a live concert and how it was to see a show back then with all the moving parts involved. “As far as the music itself goes, we try to replicate songs note for note and have people hear the music of that era as they’d have heard it when they were driving in their cars playing the radio, or listening to their eight-track player if they had one of those [laughs]. That’s the duplication we strive for — not from a live album or a song with extended guitar solos or jam sessions. We want them to identify with the same sounds as they could identify with back then. There’s basically one backing band

through all the acts with different people picking up different instruments.” The Sixties Rock Experience centers mainly on the lead singers or front people for certain legendary groups. In past shows John Lennon was paid tribute to during certain notable dates in history, but otherwise The Beatles — the preeminent name among British Invasion bands — come as a complete set in the Sixties Rock Experience, or not at all. “The only reason we don’t do The Beatles has nothing to do with being against The Beatles in any way, shape or form,” says Weinlein. “They’re one of the greatest groups of all time, hands down, unquestionably, but there’s so many Beatles tribute groups out there and to actually do The Beatles, you have to do all four people. We have, in certain shows, done tributes to John Lennon for his birthday, or even the anniversary of his death, but this show is geared more toward that individual artist or legendary performer as people remember seeing them and hearing them as far as wardrobe, sound, hair — everything. It’s total embodiment of the artist that they’re impersonating. I mean, there’s a lot of people who can impersonate artists vocally very well. This show is all about taking on the entire character of the legend and the icon that they’re doing, and wanting to present that to the audience as the audience may have remembered seeing that person 40 or 50 years ago.” “All the cast members are really up for this Atlantic City gig, and in fact a lot have been putting posts on Facebook and social media about how excited they are about it,” says Tommy Love, who plays the part

This is as close to a recreation of that Swinging Sixties music scene as you will come.

ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY • MARCH 20 - 26, 2014

urbulent times and dissension from traditional American values are, for better or worse, symbolic of the decade of the 1960s, and in no way has that been manifested better than in the music of that revolutionary period of history. On Saturday night at The Showroom at Golden Nugget, producer/director/entrepreneur (and former professional football player) Gary Weinlein returns to Atlantic City with the latest version of his Sixties Rock Experience, which is heavily centered on the “British Invasion” in its current incarnation and the 50th anniversary of that musical cultural phenomenon. Two shows are scheduled for 7pm and 10pm at The Showroom, and all ages are welcome. A cast of 14, including seven exceptionally talented singers and a seven-piece band liberally sprinkled with multi-instrumentalists comprise the show, including several new performers Weinlein sought out in his eternal quest to make the final product as good as it can be. And anyone fortunate enough to have caught the last version of the Sixties Rock Experience when it was in town, including those who may have lived through that tumultuous time themselves, will likely tell you that this is as close to a recreation of that Swinging Sixties music scene as you will come, from the sounds to the sets to the look of each performer. “This is going to be awesome,” says Weinlein. “We just had our full dress rehearsal last night. There’s a few new singers in the show and a couple of new acts, and everything’s just phenomenal. The caliber of front people has definitely gone up a notch. Not that the talent wasn’t very good before, but the show keeps on getting better and I’d like to think it’s coming to its full circle. I’m really going to start pressing this year to get us a spot on Broadway. That’s been the goal for four years. “When you start a project it has to go

of Mick Jagger, having formerly fronted a Stones’ tribute group called Exile on River Street in his upstate New York hometown. “They’ve been working on their parts, their hair, their wardrobe, accessories, attitude — they’re putting their all into it, and that’s the way it’s got to be, otherwise there’s no sense in doing it. I’m a real big stickler for making it look and sound just like the real thing, and we have a lot of talented singers in this troupe that we didn’t have last year. We have a couple of different people and you’re definitely going to dig them. They sing their ass off. “This is a performance in raw form,” adds Love. “And let’s not sugarcoat something — a lot of bands in the ’60s were high when they performed, and some of their performances were great because of it. Nobody wants to admit that but it’s true, and that’s why so many legendary performances who came out of the ‘60s would sing the way they feel. Now our cast isn’t on drugs [laughs] but you’re going to get that sort of feeling of being back in those days during the psychedelic era when we’re performing.” One newcomer in particular who has bowled over Weinlein and Love with her ability is Jenna DeBrino, who at 27 years old is already a veteran of nearly two decades in show business, having started singing in front of crowds at age eight. “The cast overall, as I said, is phenomenal, but this girl who’s going to be doing Linda Ronstadt [as well as two other acts], has already been been back and fourth to California from having done some country festivals out there [having won contests for country radio potentate WGNA out of Albany that earned her opening spots for country legends] and previously worked with Randy Jackson [of American Idol fame, and during a Cerebral Palsy Telethon when she was 17] who called her an incredible raw talent who was going to make serious headway in the music industry some day. She’s our newest member and I feel very fortunate to have her as part of the show. She’s the type of person who is really psyched to be doing the show and to embody the character and the artists that she’ll be doing. How she can change her voice inflection and her look — she’s a find and a half. All the front people are. I’m really proud of the lineup we’ve assembled.” “Learning the songs and the material and certain voice inflections of all three artists [Ronstadt, Lulu and Dusty Springfield] is one part of it, but I really concentrate on the characters and what I have to do and how I have to act to portray that character, and to jump into that state of mind,” says DeBrino, who will visit A.C. for the first time Saturday. “It works out great. I feel fortunate to be part of a cast of so many talented singers and a band is just incredible. I’m really looking forward to Atlantic City.” ■

Fans pay for movie based on hit TV series By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com

W

hen the Kristen Bell starring TV series about a teenage private eye, Veronica Mars, went off the air six years ago, its most passionate fans, known as “Marshmallows” begged for a movie version. Well it turns out they put their money where their mouths were. Part of the new wave of filmmaking financing, Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas and Bell solicited funds from fans via the internet start-up Kickstarter and with the fans kicking in $20 here and $100 there, the Mars’ creative team were given two million in 10 hours in April 2013. That was enough to get the project into production. Eventually 91,585 Mars’ contributors donated a total of $5,702,153. Kickstarter is not the only new wave filmmaking aspect of Veronica Mars, the movie. It was released on VOD (video on demand) last Friday, the same day it arrived in limited release (291 screens) in theaters. According to the box office Web site Box Office Mojo, the film earned $1.99 million. This figure does not include the VOD fees, but Mojo concluded that, “This is an interesting experiment, and should prove to be modestly successful for those involved.” That would be the filmmakers and distributor getting any profits; the fans got digital copies, T-shirts and other thankyou gifts for their investment. Veronica Mars represents my first VOD review, since the film was not released in theaters locally. Did the fans get their money’s worth? My first inclination is to agree with Mojo and call the Veronica Mars movie “modestly successful” on an artistic level. While I would never categorize myself as a “Marshmallow,” I did watch the series on a regular basis and the Veronica Mars movie plays like a more complex extension of the TV series. It is nine years later in the rich and still corrupt ’burb of Neptune, Calif. Veronica Mars (Bell) is living in New York having

facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly

just become a licensed attorney. She is interviewing for jobs, including a firm run by Gayle Buckley (Jamie Lee Curtis). While Neptune is far away, it is soon in the national headlines as an old classmate-turned-pop-star has been murdered and the main suspect is Veronica’s old flame Logan (Jason Dohring). He asks Veronica for help and soon Mars is ducking calls from Buckley and diving back into full detective mode to solve the case, while hooking up with old buds like Wallace (Percy Daggs III), Mac (Tina Majorino) and Weevil (Francis Capra), looking in on her dad Keith (Enrico Colantoni), and confronting one of Neptune’s super bitches, Madison (Amanda Noret). As with most solid private eye tales, the mystery reaches back into the past for clues to the current case. Newcomers to the VM world include the current idiotic Neptune sheriff (played by Jerry O’Connell) and an extended cameo by James Franco as himself that is rather hilarious and involves an embarrassing internet video. Bell slips back into her Veronica character with ease, and while newbies to the franchise might wonder what the fuss was all about, the “Marshmallows” are happy that their favorite sassy Nancy Drew clone is back in town and kicking ass, with a little financial help from them. ■
