PINKY’S CORNER

No 200-Room Casinos By Pinky Kravitz

S

EVERAL MONTHS AGO, I WAS ASKED TO meet with Curtis Bashaw at his Chelsea Hotel. I went to the meeting wondering what he wanted to talk about. He stated he felt that something needed to be done to boost the number of people coming into the city and that he believed that smaller hotels, such as his 300-room property, would help to achieve that if they had a small casino on the premises. I listened to his pitch and told him I didn’t agree with him. I told him that his proposition would be unfair to the current facilities that all had to build a minimum 500-room hotel with amenities such as a theater, restaurants and retail units. Their investments ranged from $500,000 to more than $2 billion. We finished our talk and left with our difference of opinion. A few months later, State Sen. Jim Whelan, while on his monthly visit to my radio show, brought up a proposal of having 200-room casinos in Atlantic City. He stated that this would help to infuse more business into Atlantic City, as the new 200-room casinos would help to stimulate business on the Boardwalk as well as bring additional casino revenue to the state. At that time, I expressed my opposition to this proposal. I felt that it would provide competition to our present casinos and that that was the last thing they need at this particular time. We had a few calls from listeners, both pro and con, and we finished the interview and departed with our opposing beliefs intact. Obviously the idea has taken legs, as last Monday, March 22, Whelan introduced a bill that would permit four 200-room hotels to have 20,000-square-foot casinos. In a story in Sunday’s edition of our local daily newspaper, Whelan said the reason for this bill was that we have too many plots of derelict and abandoned land on the Boardwalk and that we need to find a way to fill in those gaps. It is interesting to note that the bill includes the possibility of existing non-casino hotels being converted into small gaming halls. Among them is the Chelsea Hotel which, by the way, is not on the Boardwalk, is already built, and would not be filling any derelict or abandoned land. According to the article, Mark Juliano, CEO of Trump Properties, said, “I think the whole thing is ludicrous. You want to have a Las Vegas strip or downtown Las Vegas? Downtown Las Vegas is what we are morphing into and that’s not good. He continued by stating that Atlantic City is already struggling against casinos in Pennsylvania and elsewhere, and that new, smaller casinos along the Boardwalk would simply intensify the competition. “One thing we don’t need right now is additional casino space, said Juliano. The story also noted that Whelan doubted existing casinos would be hurt by his proposal. He said, “Status quo cannot continue. If we do not make change, we will continue to slide backwards. The bill further states that a 200-room hotel would have 20,000 square feet of gaming space, or could start with 30,000 square feet of gaming space and 200 rooms, but would need to expand Join us on Facebook:

facebook.com/ACWeekly

to 500 rooms within five years. They would pay five percent of gross receipts into a special fund. The money would be used to help them finance their expansion. If they do not expand, the money would be used to fund public improvements in Atlantic City or help existing casinos finance upgrades with low-interest loans. People have expressed concern about how Revel’s forthcoming hotel-casino would affect the casinos that are currently having financial problems. Similarly, how would the four 200-room casinos affect the ailing casinos? If one is located at Albany Avenue and another on Chelsea Avenue, it is my belief they would have a negative effect on the Hilton and the Tropicana.

Notes of Interest

For the third consecutive weekend, the Jersey Shore towns were loaded with people and cash registers were ringing. From the sub shops to the gourmet restaurants and everything in between, business was booming. In Atlantic City, it was a combination of the Carrie Underwood concert on Friday night, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade on the Boardwalk on Saturday, the Beer Festival at the Convention Center on Saturday and Sunday, and the desire of people to take advantage of the first weekend of 70-degree temperatures. There was much concern about how the Caesars Tennis Classic would do. I am happy to inform you that most of the high-priced seats have been sold. And most of the purchasers are from out of the area. The folks who are promoting the Classic are selling most of their tickets to people in northern New Jersey, New York and Philadelphia. This speaks well for the event, as these folks will be coming to town and more than likely staying overnight. If it is as successful as anticipated, we may look forward to it happening again next year. The Atlantic City Airshow, which last year drew a record crowd of 700,000 spectators, will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 25. The Greater Atlantic City Regional Chamber of Commerce is endeavoring to increase the attraction for this midweek event. As many of you know, Tuesday, the day before the show, is the practice day and almost all of those participating will be flying the course throughout the day. This is quite an attraction in itself and it needs to be publicized. Hopefully the Chamber will be able to put together a free musical attraction on the beach for Tuesday evening that will entice people to come into the city and spend the night. Not only will they see the aircraft flying for two days, they will also have the opportunity to enjoy exciting free entertainment. I urge you to make your room reservations early. n

Cape Hosts Singer-Songwriter Fest

It hasn’t received a ton of hype, but for the third year in a row, Cape May will become the epicenter of the East Coast singer-songwriter universe this weekend (March 26 & 27) at the Singer-Songwriter Conference of Cape May. Featured will be more than 125 acts, headliners Steve Forbert and Nicole Atkins (pictured) as well as diverse music business panels, workshops, mentoring sessions and musical keynotes spread over two days. According to organizers of the event, “Over 70 music industry professionals will participate as speakers and mentors at the conference. The concerts (free and open to the public) will be presented at various Cape May venues during the two weekend evenings. Registration is required to attend the daytime conference sessions and panels. Insulin Support Fund Telethon Saturday

Anyone who loves Atlantic City usually develops a strong sense of nostalgia for the resort in the days before casino gambling, even if they weren’t actually there at the time. One pre-casino city tradition that lasted well into the early days of gambling and carved a special niche in people’s hearts was the annual March of Dimes Telethon. Each winter, a city facing its own serious problems came together to support a worthy cause and showcase the talent and energy that was still holding on in the resort. The telethon became one of the most successful in the country, collecting more than 100 percent of its total pledges. Well, the telethon lives again in spirit this Saturday (March 27) when a telethon is held for the Insulin Support Diabetes Fund. The telethon, which will be shown on Comcast Channel 2 (10am-10pm) will feature youth talent in the morning, gospel music in the afternoon, and casino and other local professional talent during the evening. The fund is administered by AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center and provides insulin and other diabetic related supplies to the people in the greater Atlantic City area who either do not have insurance or cannot afford the life-sustaining drug on their own. The fund was founded by the late Soundra Usry-Hollingsworth and Perry T. Helfant, both legendary community leaders in the resort. The telethon can be attended live in the East Tower Ballroom at Trump Plaza. Acts scheduled to perform include Beth Tinnon, Melissa Marshall, Billy Walton, 120, AC Weekly’s Jeff Schwachter and Ken Jeremiah. ing fans one person at a time. Currently they are marketing and promoting their new single “Just Rock” on radio and with regional showcases. Niko tells Atlantic City Weekly that 120 will never disregard the importance of hard work. “That’s how we came up with the name 120,” Niko says. “While most successful people give 100 percent, we knew we would be successful if we worked harder and gave 120 percent.” So on Wednesday, April 7, I want you to join me by watching 120 perform on the longest running show on BET’s network, 106th and Park. I want you to cheer them on. I want you to log on to BET. com and vote for 120. I’ll be watching and voting because they are from New Jersey, they are talented, and they work. On a related note, the late Soundra Usry-Hollingsworth was perhaps the most prominent voice and face of color in Atlantic City. I first met her singing with the Atlantic City High School Choir my senior year at the annual Insulin Support Fund Diabetes Telethon. Now I am blessed and honored to be making an appearance on this year’s telethon (see p. 8) and I will actually get an opportunity to speak about Mrs. UsryHollingsworth (and ironically introduce 120). I humbly ask you to tune in watch and make a donation. The telethon will air live from Trump Plaza on Saturday, March 27, from 10am to 10pm on Comcast channel 2 in Atlantic City. n

T WAS SIX YEARS AGO. I WAS out at an Atlantic City open mike. Someone in the crowd was handing out CDs and telling people about the music he made. Finally he came to me and I was expecting to hear the same old story: “I’m a local artist. We all got to support local talent from Jersey! I make that real hip-hop from the streets!” I hear this same thing three or four times a night almost every time I go out. So, I was pleasantly surprised when Niko handed me a CD on this night and explained to me that he was on his way to a performance at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio. That young man was Niko Morton, and from the moment I first spoke with him I knew he was going to be special. Niko was one of the first of several South Jersey artists I have met over the past five years who are talented without a doubt and have a special work ethic. However, these performers are also devoted to their craft and to the business side of the music industry. These artists are willing to improve what they do and earn respect with music lovers. Fast forward to today and Niko, along with Baby Boy and Tarius, are collectively known as 120 and they are one of the area’s hardest working recording groups. What has changed, however, is that 120 is now known throughout the Atlantic City region, Philadelphia and New York. The reason is because they are as devoted to their music as they were when I first met Niko five years ago. As talent goes 120 is blessed. It’s a group that does some rap, some dance, but has mastered the art of soul singing and performance. All three members have distinguished voices and styles. Niko is perhaps the most outgoing and brings professional showmanship to the stage. Baby Boy is by no means last or least. His voice is as strong as anyone who has ever sung in church. He brings Sunday morning soul to this R&B group and, without a microphone, will make you stop in your tracks and applaud when he delivers notes so high Shaq would have to get on his tippy toes to reach them. While being regarded as one of best unsigned groups on the East Coast may be new, the members still enjoy mak-

Groovy Tuesdays

Jazz musicians are jammin’ and talkin’ shop every Tuesday evening in Somers Point By Ray Schweibert

P

ERHAPS THE NEXT-COOLEST component to a recently established Tuesday evening jazz series — second only behind the music itself — is the fact that those in attendance are given the opportunity to learn from the experience. Musicians set up shop in the Sandi Pointe Coastal Bistro banquet room, often performing original material and sharing concepts and music ideology with audience members. “We’ve had a lot of good feedback, a lot of people calling — it’s really starting to grow,” says Sandi Pointe co-owner Dan Anderson. “It’s kind of an exciting concept. I don’t know of anybody who’s doing anything similar, [a format] in which you can actually talk and interact with the artists. It’s really kind of neat to see.” Considering how influential the learning process has been in Tim Lekan’s own musical evolution, it sort of makes sense that he was largely responsible for putting the idea in motion at Sandi Pointe. Lekan backs up each weekly performer on acoustic bass along with drummer Bob Shomo, and both are part of the George Mesterhazy Trio that played in the series in late February. The two also constitute half of the Antfarm Quartet (along with pianist Jim Ridl and vocalist Paul Jost), which is scheduled to play at Sandi Pointe on April 27. “My older brother studied jazz guitar, and my younger brother has a master’s [degree] in music and plays jazz saxophone,” says Lekan. “They had more of an interest in jazz [early on], but being around them and listening to records with them, all the great artists began to have an influence on me.” Lekan played electric bass in a band he joined at the University of Dayton, then toured around performing largely pop and dance music on the club and casino circuit after receiving his degree, and after moving to the southern New Jersey area in the mid-1980s. “In the course of touring I met tons of great bands and musicians — musicians with a lot of formal training — and that sort of served as a wakeup call for me to get serious,” says Lekan, the artistic director for the Somers Point Jazz Society. “A lot of the musicians I played with knew jazz and I didn’t really have a handle on how to play that, so I studied it and the more I learned the more my interest kept growing. There are a lot of great musicians in this area that

I’ve been able to learn from.” And it isn’t just the seasoned jazz musicians or the captivated crowd members who benefit from the Tuesday evening series. On April 13, Lekan will introduce Young Musicians Night, featuring a trio of locals — guitarist Adam Shaber, drummer Dave Palermo and bassist Sandy Eldred — doing an opening set, and the St. Augustine Prep band doing a second set. “I kind of had it in the back of my mind that I wanted to bring some of the younger musicians in to give them the opportunity to play before an audience, and it’s kind of funny how it all worked out,” says Lekan. “Steve Giordano was booked to play April 13 but he had a conflict, so we rescheduled him to May 4. A few minutes later I got an e-mail from [St. Augustine Prep music director] Mary Lou Newnam, a tenor saxophonist who I’m friends with, saying she’d really like to bring in her big band from the Prep and asked me what I thought. I told her it was perfect timing — how about April 13?” Many are hoping the Tuesday evening series sparks the same kind of rampant live-music interest that was sort of Somers Point’s calling card for decades. “I’m fairly new here,” says Anderson, who’s originally from Pittsburgh, Pa., “but there’s something about this town. I know it was a haven for live music for years. “I don’t know whether this is a passing of the torch, but there seems to be that same type of mentality that live music is still alive here, which is nice to see. We inherited some karaoke [when Dan and Sandi Anderson took over the establishment late last year], but I just wanted to go to that live-music format. To me there’s nothing better than live music — hearing someone tickle the piano keys or playing some acoustic jazz. It just seems to brings a little more life into the place.” ■

CURTAIN CALL

Let ‘em Eat Cake By David J. Spatz

C

OMPARED TO A DEMANDING, high-maintenance bridezilla — or, worse yet, the mother of the bridezilla — creating a huge cake for a casino celebration is ... well, it’s a piece of cake for Buddy Valastro. Being asked to bake a cake to mark the 30th anniversary of Bally’s Atlantic City didn’t present a major challenge to the star of the cable television reality series Cake Boss on the TLC network. “To tell you the truth, [baking a cake] for a casino is pretty easy,” he said. “You just take all the different games, you think of the bright lights, think of all the fun stuff that I like to do in a casino, and it becomes a lot easier to make a cake. This kind of project is a little easier [than a wedding cake] in a sense from a visual viewpoint, because you have a lot to work with.” Valastro, whose family-owned Carlo’s Bakery has been feeding hungry patrons in Hoboken for 100 years, will unveil his oversized creation and offer samples of his bakery’s cupcakes to the public Saturday, March 27, beginning at 3pm in the casino’s sixth-floor atrium, where he’ll also autograph copies of his book and pose for pictures. Since thousands of people pass through the casino on a daily basis, the cake won’t be your standard-sized cake for 200 wedding guests. Valastro still wasn’t sure of the exact dimensions, he told me during a chat last week as he drove to work. “I would say the cake is probably going to be from five- to seven-feet tall and at least two- to three-feet wide,” he guesstimated. Dealing with the casino after he was commissioned to bake the king-sized cake was far less taxing or stressful than working with a nervous bride, he admitted with a laugh. “They were really easy customers,” he said of the casino executives. “They basically said, ‘We know what you do, we trust you, here’s our theme, just go with it.’ So I kind of laid out two options for them, and they opted to go with a more gaming and casinostyle cake. The other option was that I was going to do a replica of the building.” Because of the various, unscripted minidramas that develop during the television series — coupled with Valastro’s occasional impatience, short-temper and family feuds — Cake Boss has attracted healthy ratings and reviews. TLC recently ordered a third season of the show, most of which is taped at the popular bakery, which produces thousands of pastries

and customized cakes each week. Valastro, 32, is a fourth-generation baker who started working at his father’s side when he was still a kid. When Valastro was 17, he dropped out of high school after the death of his father and mentor to work in the bakery full time. Valastro had tried several times to develop a television show based on the bakery before TLC approached him and said they wanted to create “a cake show,” he explained. The master baker agreed, and Cake Boss was born. “They were looking for cake show, and I said I had a great idea for one, and it was kind of like a perfect marriage,” he said. “I would watch other shows and there was nothing like what we do. It just clicked and simply happened at the right place at the time.” Valastro gives all the credit for his success to his late father. “Make no mistake, if my dad was still around, he would be the ‘cake boss,’ not me,” he said. Buddy “Cake Boss” Valastro will appear in the 6th floor atrium at Bally’s Atlantic City Saturday at 3pm. Admission is free. Idol Gossip: Sources have confirmed to AC Weekly that former West Wing star Jimmy Smits will film scenes for the pilot of an NBC legal drama at Resorts Atlantic City early next month. Two scenes will be filmed on the casino floor and others will be set in a casino suite, in the hotel lobby and in the valet parking area. Smits will play the youngest member of the Supreme Court who is asked to break a 4-4 tie on a death penalty case. The show, tentatively titled Justice, was steered to Atlantic City by the Atlantic City Convention & Visitors Authority, which was a coup in itself because much of the show is being shot in Philadelphia. Justice is being produced by Conoco, a production company owned by former Tonight Show host Conan O’Brien. Incidentally, O’Brien’s comedy tour, which rolls into Borgata May 30, sold out so quickly that a second show was added the same night. n

NYONE WHO PLAYS IN A friendly private poker game will appreciate a deal being offered by the Tropicana that allows you and seven to 10 guests to play on your own table with a private dealer. No matter how friendly your game gets, someone always has to collect, shuffle and then deal the cards. As the night goes on it gets to be a real job. But if you’ve ever seen the classic poker film The Cincinnati Kid, you may have imagined Joan Blondell, a.k.a. Lady Fingers, showing up as your own private dealer. Well, first you may imagine Ann Margret and Tuesday Weld at the game, but then definitely you want Lady Fingers to handle the dealing. While some poker rooms in Atlantic City are willing to accommodate a private game, the Tropicana is offering a special deal for friends to have their own private party and table. “When you bring your game to the Tropicana Poker Club, you’ll get VIP treatment at a table reserved just for you and your friends, family members or business associates,” says Scott Griffin, Trop poker manager. “Because it’s a private game, you can change the game type and limits every 30 minutes.” The deal includes complimentary beverages from the Tropicana’s servers. While sandwiches are available tableside, you are also welcome to bring your own game night fuel from Corky’s, Hooters or any of the Tropicana’s renowned eateries. “Best of all, you have the benefit of your own ‘user-friendly’ dealer [probably not Joan Blondell], who will go at your pace and answer all of your questions about game rules, strategy and proper poker etiquette,” Griffin adds. “It’s the best introduction to casino poker in Atlantic City.” Private tables require a minimum of eight attendees, and can accommodate up to 11 of your friends in total. All private games are subject to a standard collection fee of 10 percent of each hand, up to $4. Groups of 10 or more may choose a flat charge of $5 per player, every 30 minutes instead. For reservations or more information, contact the Tropicana Poker Manager’s office toll-free at 1-800-843-8767, extension 4546. Members of your group must be 21 or older to play. Women, the Time Is Ripe! By Whitney Ullman

S

PRING IS HERE AND YOU CAN tell by the way that everyone has been in a better mood lately. People want to shop, eat and just be chilling out in the sun. We all want to take advantage and enjoy this great weather, but business still needs to go on. And because we are in better spirits during this time of year, this is a great time to start actively networking and building your businesses. The great thing is that because it is spring, you have the opportunity to work hard now so you can enjoy your summer months and have your business work for you. One great opportunity coming up is an exclusive evening at Mia’s Restaurant at Caesars with Sandra Yancey, the president and founder of the e-Women Network. Not only will you get one-onone time with her, but you will get to socialize, network and build relationships with other great people in the area. This is also one of the few e-Women events where husbands/boyfriends/significant others are welcome to come. If you want to stay in Atlantic City after the event, Bally’s is offering a reduced room rate. This way, you can also wake up the next day and attend the more formal luncheon where Yancey will be giving a presentation. Yancey is a networking expert who teaches others how to create relationships that harness great dividends. Starting with just 20 women in her personal database in 2000, she has grown her e-Women organization to now have 113 chapters throughout the United States and Canada and a database of over 500,000 women business owners and professionals. I was recognized last year as an emerging leader, the only one from New Jersey and one of 11 out of the United States and Canada. I have to say that this is an organization that you should take seriously. Women in business: Make every effort to attend the meetings — especially because we are lucky enough to have Marilyn Kleinberg as our local leader. I know that getting out and networking is no easy task; it takes time, knowledge and patience. But you have to start somewhere and why not start on the night of April 8 for this event? For more information you can contact Kleinberg at marilynkleinberg@ewomennetwork.com or 601-1333.

While we are on the subject of women’s groups, there is also the New Jersey Association of Women Business Owners. The Atlantic-Cape May Chapter meets every third Tuesday at the Greate Bay Country Club in Somers Point from 5:308:30pm. You can get more information at atlanticcapemaynjawbo.org. I want to thank NJAWBO for recognizing me at their annual Women in Leadership Symposium event a few weeks ago at the PNC Center. There are some great women leaders and NJAWBO helped give me my start in the women-in-business networking field. Their motto is “Empower. Engage. Energize.” and that’s the feeling you’ll get when you attend their meetings. There is another great women’s group called the South Jersey Womens Network. I love these ladies. We meet every Wednesday morning at the Shore Diner. We are only allowed to have one person from each line of work, so if you have something unique to bring to the table, feel free to check us out. The group’s motto is “For the cost of breakfast, you have hired an entire network to be your sales force.” So make sure to check out the Web site at sjwn.net. On a side note, I’ve been meaning to tell you about the fabulous Restaurant Gala put on recently by Atlantic Cape Community College. It’s a great annual event because everyone is dressed up, music keeps the party going and, best of all, you get to enjoy as many food samplings that you want. I have to tell you that although I didn’t try everything, I did try a lot and my absolute favorite was the “Manna Dip,” which was created by Manna in Margate, and made with braised short ribs, wild mushrooms, and topped with truffle oil on a brioche roll. Manna’s tagline is “feed your body, nourish your soul.” A good motto for this time of year! n

The Hard Rock Café in Atlantic City has been showcasing the talent of local musicians to benefit national charities in March. On Friday, March 26, at 9pm, as a part of its annual “March On Stage” event, the venue presents the jam band 3 Noodle Stew. Hard Rock locations both in the U.S. and overseas have been taking part by presenting a variety of acts, including both local performers and widely known superstars all month. The shows are free and open to all ages, with March On Stage pins on sale and 15 percent of all proceeds going to Musicians On Call — an organization whose goal is to bring live and recorded music to the bedsides of patients in healthcare facilities. The mission statement of Musicians On Call emphasizes the therapeutic effect of music for patients, families and caregivers alike. The A.C. Hard Rock, along with radio stations 102.7 JSE and 103.7 The Shark, are presenting the performance by the native New Jersey band 3 Noodle Stew. Hailing from Burlington County, 3 Noodle Stew has been performing together since 1997. The band consists of Fred “Chooch” Pasqua (bass/sax/vocals), Jeff Stoltz (keyboard/vocals), Dan Jacoby (guitar/bass/vocals) and James “Phattq” Rabic (drums). The group likens itself to acts such as Phish and the Grateful Dead. It also recently released a new album, Blueprint Blues, in November 2009, and is currently planning on returning to the studio this year to record new songs for another album. For more info, go to the band’s Web site myspace. com/3noodlestew or visit hardrock.com — Jon Heacock

Openly gay comic brings heralded comedy to Taj Mahal Saturday By Kelley Anne Essinger

S

UZANNE WESTENHOEFER, the first openly lesbian comic ever to appear on television, has been presenting gay material in mainstream clubs and proudly performing within the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community since entering the world of comedy on a dare in 1990. She went on to become the first openly gay comic to host her own HBO comedy special in 1994, which earned her a Cable Ace Award nomination, and is now beginning her 20th year of hysterical gaiety while enjoying her well-earned status at the forefront of the lesbian comedy scene. Along with starring in Comedy Central specials throughout the years, Westenhoefer has had a starring role in the Web series We Have To Stop Now. Her numerous DVDs include Nothing in My Closet But My Clothes, I’m Not Cindy Brady, Guaranteed Fresh, Live from the Village and A Bottom on Top. Westenhoefer spoke with Atlantic City Weekly a few weeks prior to her performance inside the Xanadu Theater at the Trump Taj Mahal this Saturday, March 27.

I heard you entered the world of comedy on a dare. What made you do it? I was a bartender in Secaucus, N.J., and it was one of those things where everybody would say, “You’re so funny, you should be a comedian.” From there it became, “What, are you afraid to try it?” And then I was sort of like, “Well, no, I’m openly gay.” It was 1990, I was young and back then there weren’t really gay comics in the straight world, you know what I mean? [But] it was one of those things where finally, ultimately, some friends and people who were regulars said, “Don’t be a sissy — do it.” And that’s exactly what happened. I just kind of went, “Oh, OK, I’ll try it.” At what point in your life did you start to realize you were funny? You know, never. I didn’t think that I was like George Carlin funny or falldown Stooges’ brother funny. I never thought of that. I just thought I had a smart answer for everything, and it was certainly something I got into trouble for as a kid. It certainly got me into a few arguments or got people to go, “Hey!” Then when you start doing it on stage it’s

Join us on Facebook:

Why did you choose to incorporate your lesbian lifestyle into your material? Because I’d been an activist already for so long right when I came out. I came out in college and the thought of being on stage and being funny and telling stories and being truthful and not saying it — that was impossible, which was half the reason I never tried it in the first place. It was only once I was like, “Alright, I’m just gonna go and I’m gonna be open,” that I could do it. I could not have done it and pretended to be something other than what I was. I would have had nothing to say then for sure.

Have you gotten any backlash from the gay or straight community? I think the straight community, especially in the first 10 years that I was doing standup, was really uncomfortable, and they still can be. But obviously that’s changing. It’s changing like hourly. It’s awesome. And it was supposed to be. It’s perfect. n see more online @

so different. Everybody expects it, they need it, they want it, they support it, and you’re like, “Wow, this is awesome.”

I heard you sometimes perform unscripted. How does that work? Do you tell yourself anything to get motivated before going on-stage? It’s sort of what I do most the time. It’s kind of, I always say, extemporaneous. Some of it is stuff I’ve said before, some of it’s stuff I’ve never said. Some of it’s stuff I may have said last night, some of it’s stuff I said five years ago and never even thought about. There’s not an order. The audience and I sort of dictate it with what they’re responding to, what’s going on in the world, what’s going on in my life, what’s going on in the theater, what’s going on with all of us right then. This is a sort of guarded secret [but before going on stage] I say, “I have nothing to say to these people” over and over in my head, and then I have a billion things to say and it’s hard to shut up. I do not know why.

Spring Dining Dish Scrumptious grub awaits food fans in the coming weeks and months By Frank Gabriel

T

HERE IS NO MORE TELLING indicator of spring’s arrival hereabouts than the opening of new businesses, especially in food service sectors. In spite of a still-moribund economy, the Atlantic City region continues to percolate with activity. Here are a few of the 2010 season’s most hotly anticipated arrivals. Chido Burrito, Northfield: Located on Tilton Road at the site long occupied by Stewart’s Root Beer, Chido Burrito is the first independent venture owned and operated by local developer Terence Gallagher, along with partner Steve Marchel. Formerly manager at Margate’s Sailfish Café, Gallagher has added jazzy, colorful, surf-oriented decor throughout in addition to completely remodeling both the dining area and kitchen. Many recipes arrive with big-league pedigrees, having been formulated by chefs at Margate fave Steve and Cookie’s. Brisket and pork shoulder, standard-bearers for the emergent “low and slow” cooking movement, will be prepared in-house daily. Chido opened earlier this week. Redding’s Southern Cuisine: Atlantic City: A terribly ambitious new enterprise in one of Atlantic City’s neediest sections, this marks the local debut of nationally-known Chef Carl S. Redding. The former Marine, employed for nearly a decade by the Reverend Al Sharpton, previously ran restaurants in Harlem, midtown Manhattan and Connecticut’s Foxwoods casino. Redding’s list of former customers and associates reads like a Who’s Who of modern American clout:

Kelsey & Kim’s Southern Café, Atlantic City: Spotting a trend here? Thank us. We asked for more BBQ in our ‘Wish List’ column of early January, and apparently someone was listening. K&K’s will replace longtime Inlet eatery

Chido Burrito’s surf-inspired decor is well done and creates the classic ‘California Mexican stand’ atmosphere.

Oprah Winfrey, Bill and Hillary Clinton, George W. Bush and the late Michael Jackson, all prominently pictured on his Web site. (www.reddingsrestaurant. com.) Among an extensive list of awards, Redding was selected by the New York Daily News as “The #1 Person to Watch in the New Millenium” in 2000 at the age of only 36. His luscious-sounding menu crosses multiple genres, from traditional soul food to unique items like the decadent delight fried chicken and waffles. Serving as general manager will be veteran nightclub and restaurant entrepreneur Ralph Fiocchi, scion of a well-connected Vineland-area farm family. Expect Redding’s to open by Mother’s Day at 1545 Pacific Ave. Expect to see lines, long lines, waiting to get in and grub.

Corbin’s in a corner spot on the farthest northeastern edges of Absecon Island. Look for them to open by early April at Melrose and New Hampshire avenues. The owners already successfully manage a well-regarded restaurant in Pleasantville (52 North Main St.) Loyal fans rave about southern staples like pulled pork, fried chicken, mac and cheese, and greens. We’ve been negligent in not sampling their wares and plan to remedy that quickly. Like the man says: It’s a dirty job but someone has to do it. Kitaro, Ventnor: Named for a Grammy award-winning Japanese musician/composer, this planned Asian/ French fusion restaurant is set to open at the spot that previously housed The Nostalgia Room (5214 Atlantic Ave.). Good news — they’ve completely gutted the tired-looking interiors. A small sushi station has been created, along with

other design elements — like a faux bamboo room divider — reflecting their new theme and menu. A Pan-Asian motif is reinforced by Kitaro’s two key staffers. General Manager Ta Tuan, a Vietnamese native, tells us that the chef will be an experienced Japanese culinarian from Manhattan named Sochi. They expect to begin operating mid-April. R.I. Café, Ocean City: The nebulous name doesn’t tell the story; this is one of the best new Chinese — or Asian, for that matter — restaurants to open locally in the last two decades. New owners have transformed the former home of Island Shore II (ironically, the original still exists offshore, in Marmora) and offer a menu that leans heavily on exotic, spicier cuisine. On a recent visit (14th Street between Asbury and Central avenues), we sampled a dozen scintillating Szechwan wontons. The delicate, gently folded pastries were filled with a soft meat and veggie mix and coated by a piquant, Thai-style peanut sauce. Luke Palladino, Northfield: Perhaps the most intriguing of this season’s stories-to-still-be-told is that of the Borgata’s former wunderkind chef (Specchio, Ombra, Risi Bisi). According to signage onsite, Palladino plans to open soon in a tiny facility near the intersection of Route 9 and Tilton Road, which was formerly called Kenny’s Kitchen. Very little additional information was available as of press time, but watch this column for an update soon. n E-mail Frank Gabriel at fgabriel@acweekly.com

After performing more than a year straight at the Comedy Stop, magician Paul Kozak has found a home in Atlantic City. By Michael Pritchard

S

ETTLED COMFORTABLY INTO A nice little bungalow on the bay side of Margate, magician Paul Kozak lives surrounded by a celebration of the art that has kept him on the move for most of his life. Every table and shelf in every nook and cranny is taken over by sculpture, paintings, and other pieces of artwork. One wall of his living room is given over completely to books, his “magic library,” he says.

“The tricks are in here,” the 55-year-old Kozak says with a sly smile. Awards for his magic line the bookshelf, including three Merlin Awards, kind of an Oscar of magic. They were earned in a long career on the road as both magician and comic at comedy clubs around the country and a recent six-year stint in Las Vegas. It’s a peaceful, contemplative place where Kozak, a man who has played for royalty

(Prince Charles and Princess Diana), worked with nearly every well-known stand-up and appeared on every late-night TV talk show (except Letterman, so you know what we think of him), can discover new outlets for his restless creativity. “I do oil paintings and I play the cello,” he says. “But that’s something that settling down

has afforded me. You can’t have much of a life when you live in hotel rooms.” If this sounds like a nice shore retirement, well, it’s not even close. Kozak packs way too much energy and enthusiasm into his large frame to ever sit still. And when he takes the stage nightly — and that’s seven days a week folks — for the dinner show at The Comedy Stop, well, let’s just say there are no AARP cards evident in his future. He comes out shooting fire from his hands, literally,

“This is the family friendly version,” he says to the audience. “Sometimes there aren’t any children, then you get a very different show.” Kozak will spend the next hour flirting with the females in the audience (also bringing several on stage). He’ll make things, like say, bowling balls, appear out of nowhere, pull dry sand out of a bowl of water and pretty much leave everybody feeling they were part of the show. It’s not just the performance of a sea-

of work, but I also have total creative control. I don’t do the same show every night. After all these years, I’m a totally improvisational performer. One of the first things I do on stage is ask if anybody has seen me before and when. Then I know what not to repeat and where to go with the show.” Still, he admits that after living in Las Vegas, Scottsdale and Los Angeles, respectively, the New Jersey winters “kicked my ass,” he says. “I started on Christmas and

know me. I’m involved with the community and a lot of them have also seen my show. When I drive down Ventnor Avenue to get to work, people wave at me. Trust me, you don’t get that in Vegas.” But then there are a lot of things Kozak loves about his new home. There are the backyard barbecues with his friends from the Comedy Stop to his painting, photography (“I paint too slowly to do landscapes, so I have to take a picture”), to the cello. He also does charity work,

‘I have total creative control. I don’t do the same show every night. After all these years, I’m a totally improvisational performer.’

while confetti-ing the children in the audience and quickly making a point to make eye contact with everyone there. The last bit isn’t standard, but on a Thursday night in mid-March, well before Atlantic City’s busy time of year, the audience numbers only 24 people. “Wow,” Kozak says of the applause as he takes the stage. “You sound like 25 people. Thank you.” Though used to playing to hundreds, if not thousands in Vegas — and in fairness, also in a summertime Atlantic City — Kozak is undaunted by the small crowd. “I like small audiences sometimes,” he says later. “It gives you a chance to be very intimate. One time in January, I came out and there were only two people — a couple. But as luck would have it, it was their 47th wedding anniversary. It was wonderful and I worked very hard to make it a special night for them,” These 24 will get the same treatment. Kozak starts off by playing to the kids in the audience, bringing them up on stage, wowing them with slight of hand.

soned performer who knows how to be on stage. The stage is his and has been since he signed a five-year contract to appear nightly at The Comedy Stop starting Christmas 2008. Now, with nearly 500 performances, Kozak has experienced the highs of an A.C. summer and the lows of two shore winters. And he wouldn’t have it any other way. “I’m in a great position,” he says. “I’m a headliner with my own show in Atlantic City. This really is the zenith of my career. But I was worried when I agreed to do a regular show in Vegas and come off the road, that it would become a job. And at first it did. But I just had to change my mind set. The way I look at it, I’m in the World Series or the Super Bowl every night. Whether there’s six people in the audience or 76, I’m going to give it my best.” The stint in Vegas was as part of six magicians appearing in The World’s Greatest Magic Show at the Greek Isle Casino. In Atlantic City, however, Kozak is a one-man show. “When I was in Vegas there were a producer and a director,” he says. “Here, I’m my own producer. So that is a lot

my first month my heating bill was like $700. I just couldn’t get warm.” “But we’ve been tracking my audience numbers and even though it’s the slow time of year, my numbers are up. When you consider the weather lately and the recession, I’ve really been doing very well.” And like it or not, with four years left on his contract, he now is knee-deep in Atlantic City’s efforts to revitalize itself in the face of growing competition. “I think that’s what Atlantic City needs,” he says. “A lot of people have told me that we need more acts like mine that are on early in the week. Just because it’s slower in the middle of the week, there are still people here in town. Entertainment is the one thing Atlantic City has over other markets.” And there is another thing — intimacy, from the small early week audiences to being part of a new community. “They say Vegas is a small town,” he says. “But this is even smaller. And it can be hard to meet people here. But after a year here the neighbors are getting to

is celebrating nine years of sobriety and surviving four previous marriages. But if Margate is too slow for him, you’d never guess it. “One of my first headlining gigs in my career came at the Comedy Stop from Bob Kephart,” he says. “Thanks to Bob, I skipped a whole step in a comedian’s career. I went from emcee to headliner and never had to work as a middle act. And the first press I ever got came from The Whoot!. My first radio interview was with Pinky Kravitz. So in a way I’ve come full circle and come back to where I started.” And it looks like this time, Kozak may have gotten sand in his shoes. He is in the process of buying his Margate home, rather than renting. The home worked out well since all his [stuff] fit inside perfectly. It’s not the home of someone planning to leave. “I think the sand in the shoes has already happened to me,” he says. “My friend [comedian] George Wallace does a little video interview I use to open my show. He calls me the new Mr. Atlantic City. That’s what I’d love to be.” n see more online @

HEN THE MAHONEY BROTHERS WERE growing up in Hamilton, N.J., near Trenton, they didn’t dream of being musical impersonators. However, 25-plus years into their musical journey, Tim, Brian and Mike Mahoney, and their “fourth brother, Jay Swanson, have made a career out of recreating the sights and sounds of the Beatles, Beach Boys, Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Neil Diamond, and other recording artists from the era when records ruled the radio. Since 1987, the Mahoney Brothers have collected their musical impressions together in their show Jukebox Heroes. The brothers are back in town at Trump Plaza this weekend, March 26-28. In a chat with Tim Mahoney, I found out how their long and winding road led them to put on mop-top wigs and, in his case, learn to play the guitar left-handed. When asked how musically inclined brothers become tribute artists? Mahoney tells me, “We have done our

‘I was young and stupid. I don’t think I would be that ambitious now. It was a lot of work.’ own music. We have released a couple of country CDs as the Mahoney Brothers Band overseas and we’ve gotten airplay in 20 different countries. “When we were starting out, performing cover tunes to get work, people kept coming up to us and saying, ‘You sound just like the jukebox.’ As young guys, we thought that everybody sounded like the records. That’s how we learned the songs. Over time, people would say, you should do a whole set of Beatles [songs] and that’s really how the whole thing started. We got to the point where we could make a living doing impersonations so it took us off in that direction. As for which parts of the show are most popular, Mahoney says, “Elvis always kills them. My brother Mike does a terrific job. He was reluctant to do it because of the stereotypical Elvis impersonator, but he did such a great job that my other brother Brian and I said we really have to put this in the show. We just played in the Poconos and he did four songs and got two standing ovations. Mahoney adds, “Of course, the Beatles are popular. All ages love the Beatles, and Neil Diamond — they probably are the three biggest acts for fans. Mahoney plays Paul McCartney and even though he is right handed, he decided to learn to play the

bass guitar left handed. “I was young and stupid, he laughs. “I don’t think I would be that ambitious now. It was a lot of work. Mahoney also does Neil Diamond. “Most of the acts we do are based on which of us vocally sounds most like the character and then we build around that, we go for the costumes and the wigs, he says. Neil Diamond was added by audience demand. Several years back they were doing their show and a bunch of people at the post-concert “meet and greet came up and said, “We were sure you were going to do Neil Diamond, says Mahoney, whose first reaction was, “That’s an odd thing to say. Later, after looking at some Neil Diamond concert shots, he could see that there was a facial similarity. “I worked backwards on that character, he says. “I can look like him, now I have to work on the vocals. As for his favorite impersonation, Mahoney says, “Jerry Lee Lewis. He is so over the top and flamboyant. When it comes to sitting back and watching, he enjoys watching brother Mike do Elvis. “He doesn’t do it like a spoof, he says. “He does it like you are watching Elvis live. Two minutes later he is back on stage as Ringo and the audience has no clue it’s the same guy. n see more online @

The Bounty Hunter

Atlantic City’s ‘Bounty’ The town looks great in an otherwise weak rom-com By Lori Hoffman

B

EFORE WE BEGIN OUR REVIEWS, allow me a mini-rant. Too many movies these days have crappy dialogue, bad photography and stories that have little connection to the way real people act and talk. In addition, product placement is so up front, it can overwhelm whatever story has been cobbled together from spare parts stolen from the other cookie-cutter flicks that came before the latest “wait-for-the-video” extravaganza. Yes, The Bounty Hunter falls smack dab into the middle of my rant. While damning with very faint praise, I will concede that it is better than Gerard Butler’s previous rom-com, last summer’s horrible The Ugly Truth. The Bounty Hunter isn’t quite as ugly as that, but it doesn’t provide one original moment or one moment between the two protagonists that rings true. The movie follows the standard romcom template that opposites attract and then the love gets explosive and out of The Bounty Hunter HHHH Directed by Andy Tennant; rated PG13 Repo Men HHHH Directed by Miguel Sapochnik; rated R

control. Milo Boyd (Butler), a former NYC cop turned bounty hunter, is overjoyed when he learns that his ex-wife, reporter Nicole Hurley (Jennifer Aniston), has skipped bail. There is nothing like being able to legally take your wife to jail to ease the pain of the break-up. Not that the plot is worth recounting, but Nicole is working on a story that has a killer on her trail. Milo figures out that Nicole is headed to Atlantic City after a trip to the racetrack, but of course he thinks her story about being in danger is just a ploy. Milo shouldn’t be visiting A.C. right now since he owes money to a local bookie, Irene (Cathy Moriarity). There are bookies in Atlantic City? Say it ain’t so. The movie breaks out the usual clichés of the genre, which are supposed to be spiced up by the side action of comic thugs and a serious killer on their trail. There is absolutely no chemistry on screen between Butler and Aniston, and the movie is utterly forgettable.

Bounty of A.C. Shots

Beyond the actual movie, it was fun to see Atlantic City on film again, including an AC Weekly box in one scene. I did like that the location scout for the movie must have shown director Andy Tennant the

old advertisement for Irene’s Gifts. Long before the casinos, Irene’s was the place you shopped for T-shirts and beach gear and all the other sundries. The director put the Irene’s ad in the movie and made the name of the bookie Irene. There are also nice shots of the Boardwalk, scenes at the Taj and shots of the Borgata. The Borgata, by the way, paid plenty for those taxi shots that feature an ad for the Borgata. Product placement doesn’t come cheap. I won’t even bitch too much about having a bicycle taxi on the Boardwalk instead of a rolling chair. The scene doesn’t work unless it is a bike so I won’t quibble.

Healthcare Gone Bad Forget about death panels, the future of healthcare, if it is run by companies that are willing to kill patients for profit, is the premise of the bloody awful (and I
