rels), blancos (bottled within two months of distillation), and mescals and sotols — like tequila distilled from the agave plant, but each with a regionalized Mexican distinction. “All of the staff at Gypsy Bar is certified by the Tequila Regulatory Council,” says Lupo. “They are extremely knowledgeable and happy to teach our guests about the many different types and brands of tequila. “We have an extensive tequila list with descriptions about each beverage to further inform the customers about what makes each unique. If you are new to Gypsy I would recommend trying a flight [$20], which consists of three one-ounce snifters of premium tequilas for you to compare and enjoy.” Gypsy Bar also offers an extensive list of margaritas, mojitos, sangrias and signature drinks. Among the most popular, says Lupo, are the Pomegranate Margarita (Siembra Azule reposado, Grand Marnier, fresh lime and pomegranate juices) and the Cougarita (the house margarita made with Jose Cuervo Silver tequila, Cointreau, a special homemade sour mix, and agave syrup). Most cocktails are $9 but one — the Agave Suave — is made with El Tesoro Paradiso tequila, Grand Marnier 100-Year and fresh lime juice for $60, which, according to the menu, is “worth every penny.” The Gypsy Bar also has its own brand of pineapple-infused tequila ($9) and recently introduced its own infusion of jalapeño tequila, which can be served as a shot or in Gypsy Bar’s newest concoction, the Spicy Margarita. There are also eight bottled beers and 10 draft beers (“cervezas”) on tap, including Yuengling Lager, Stella Artois, Bass, Heineken, Guinness, Blue Moon, Blue Point, Sierra Nevada, Michelob Ultra and Gypsy’s specialty craft beer of the month. Gypsy Bar’s springtime schedule is Wednesday and Sunday 6pm-1am, Friday and Saturday 6pm-3am, and Thursday 6pm2am. There is no regular food service, but a special menu is available for larger groups that reserve Gypsy Bar for private parties. Visit theborgata.com/nightlife/bars. ■

ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY • MARCH 27 - APRIL 2, 2014

or over a decade now, Borgata has done a commendable job keeping its clientele happy with a variety of entertainment options, from A-list DJs at MIXX and mur.mur nightclubs to headliners that span the gamut in the Event Center and the more intimate Music Box. Another entertainment component that frequently sees long lines waiting to gain entry is the Gypsy Bar, fronted by huge ornate iron doors and sited right at the foot of the elevators leading up to the Event Center. And it isn’t unheard of to occasionally have headline acts head over to the Gypsy Bar after their shows and join in the festivities. “Gypsy Bar has been an invaluable nightlife option since Borgata’s inception in 2003,” says Borgata senior vice president of operations Joe Lupo. “Because we do not require a cover charge, the bar presents a sense of inclusion to anyone who is looking to enjoy an array of live music in a fun, casual atmosphere. “It’s the ideal bar of choice for concert goers to either pre-game with their friends before a show in the Music Box or Event Center, or to keep the night going after a headlining act,” adds Lupo. “We have seen numerous entertainers such as Jimmy Fallon, Weezer, Vince Neil, Dave Navarro, the Beach Boys and Il Divo spontaneously jump up on stage and interact with the band and their fans. You never know who you may run into on any given night.” The Borgata seeks out the best bands in South Jersey and beyond to perform five nights per week at Gypsy Bar (Wednesday through Sunday) free of charge, including a regular Philly quintet called The Loop on Thursday (9pm) and two bands every Friday and Saturday night starting 7 and 11pm. The majority of Gypsy Bar bands take a fairy conventional approach to their look and musical repertoire, but occasionally one shows up with a quirky kind of vibe, like a quartet from North Jersey that’s been around for over 20 years — The Nerds — who perform there Friday night, March 29, starting 11pm. The Nerds blend a highenergy sound with a comedic twist, each looking as exceedingly intellectual and socially awkward as the band’s name might imply. “Twenty years and still going strong, like the Energizer Bunny — or more like the deadly bunny guarding the cave in Monty Python’s Holy Grail,” say The Nerds on their Web site (the-nerds.com). The Gypsy Bar also features one of the best tequila selections this side of Tijuana, with over 100 brands available ranging from $8 to $75 (Patron Gran Burdeos) per serving. The tequila menu is distinguished by anejos (aged at least one year and best served straight), reposados (aged two to 12 months in oak bar-

outh Jersey middleweight Ismael Garcia of Vineland will put his unbeaten record on the line (5-0-1, 3 knockouts) when he faces fellow unbeaten DuShane Crooks (6-0, 4 KOs) of Brooklyn in what is part of a talentladen boxing undercard at Boardwalk Hall’s Adrian Phillips Ballroom Saturday night, March 29. The main event will be televised live on HBO After Dark and pits another pair of unbeatens, WBO light-heavyweight champion Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev (23-0-1, 21 KOs) against formidable challenger Cedric Agnew (26-0, 13 KOs). The Russian-born Kovalev fights out of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Agnew fights out of Chicago. Doors open 6:30pm. The live telecast starts 10pm. Also topping a stacked undercard is light-heavyweight contender Lionell Thompson (15-2, 9 KOs), a former five-time Golden Gloves champion from New York state, and Radivje Kalajdzic (14-0, 10 KOs), in a 10-round bout. Kalajdzic is from Bosnia and now fights out of Florida, having knocked out his last three quality opponents (combined record 53-262) in the first round. Thompson is ranked No. 8 by the WBA. A potentially exciting eight-round junior middleweight match will see Wilky Campfort (16-1, 9 KOs) return to Atlantic City when he takes on Khurshid Abdullaev (6-0-1, 3 KOs). In his last fight at Resorts, Campfort fought a toeto-toe brawl against Atlantic City’s DeCarlo Perez (11-4, 4 KOs) to gut out an eight-round split decision. Tickets are $26 to $152. ALBUM WEEK

erhaps we are seeing the first concrete evidence that online gaming is revitalizing the A.C. economic landscape. Tropicana Entertainment Inc. has announced a proposed series of renovation projects at the Tropicana Casino & Resort totaling approximately $35 million. The proposed capital investments include improvements to the property’s Boardwalk façade, the addition of retail areas and a new fitness center, and North Tower hotel room renovations. Commencement of the projects is contingent upon a number of factors including approvals from the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority and the New Jersey Economic Development Authority. If approved, construction is anticipated to start in the third quarter of 2014 with an expected completion date by the end of 2015. The biggest undertaking in the proposed plan would be a complete renovation of the casino’s Boardwalk façade boasting a fully choreographed high-energy interactive light and sound show via 20-foot-high light bollards and nine LED screens. The light show would run nightly at timed intervals. The North and South hotel towers would be illuminated by color-changing lights. Additionally, three new retailers would be added to round off Tropicana’s Boardwalk offerings. The final component of the façade renovation would be the extension of FIN’s dining room. The new architecture and roof would refresh FIN’s look, matching the Havana theme of The Quarter. The upgrades would include a new state-of-the-art, two-story fitness club, located on Brighton Avenue adjacent to Blue Mercury Spa. “We are excited about the prospect of creating and investing in these innovative renovations,” says Tony Rodio, the Trop’s president and CEO. “The new Boardwalk façade and interactive light and sound show would extend the excitement and fun guests experience inside Tropicana A.C. to guests outside on the Boardwalk.”

Denney and the Jets ‘Mexican Coke’ (Burger/Limited Fanfare Records))

W

ith a similar sounding name (inspired by Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention’s 1968 faux doo-wop album Cruisin’ with Reuben & the Jets?? Referencing Elton John’s tune “Benny & the Jets”?) as well as a page out of the Rolling Stones’ blues/ sleaze/country-rock, sexually explicit and drug-induced period (from about Beggar’s Banquet and — especially — Sticky Fingers off and on up to Tattoo You’s “Waiting on a Friend”) Denney & the Jets’ debut album, Mexican Coke, is one of the most genuinely rocking albums to come out this year. Nashville native Chris Denney sings of sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll like no other act since the Stones, and his countrified vocal inflections are reminiscent of Mick Jagger doing his best southern honkin’ with an extra dose of vulnerability tossed in. Recorded and mixed in only five days, Mexican Coke could have a huge summer following its release April 8 in the States. While the album explores “smoking’, drinkin’, cocaine, youth, rodeo clowns, fucking around, acquittal, the blues, family, being broke, pain pills, hangovers, strength, getting high, addiction, living and dying,” as stated so succinctly in the band’s bio, the music is raw, bluesy and fiery right from the opening bass line of the album’s first track “Water to Wine.” Meanwhile, a song such as “Darlin’” is a simple yet beautiful — with its perfectly placed organ — retrosounding ballad with a touch of Otis Redding and the Modern Lovers. The closing tracks are also mid-tempo country-rockers. Fans of 1960s garage bands as well as the Yardbirds, Kinks and the Black Keys will surely dig Mexican Coke, while Stones, The Band and countryrock fans will rejoice. The album’s being released on LP, CD and (even) cassette. — Jeff Schwachter

Starship Lands at Nugget By David J. Spatz

curtain call >>

n case you didn’t get the memo, Starship is back. More accurately, Starship featuring Mickey Thomas — one of two bands that can trace its musical DNA to original 1960s acid rockers Jefferson Airplane — is on the road again for all the reasons bands usually tour: to promote something new. In September, after several years and a bunch of false starts, Starship released the album Loveless Fascination. It’s the band’s first studio album since its 1989 release Love Among the Cannibals, Starship’s first album after original Jefferson Airplane co-founder Grace Slick left the group. (Several years earlier, another original Airplane pilot, Paul Kantner, left Starship. The lineup card for the bands spawned by Jefferson Airplane can be very confusing; to save space here, we recommend looking it up on either Google or wikipedia.org.) Thomas, Starship’s front man, says while the new disc may seem musically nostalgic, it’s anything but a romp in the way-back machine. “In some ways, this feels like a ’70s record,” Thomas says on the band’s Web site. “It’s organic, and there’s a real edge to it. We stopped and started this record so many times over the past years. But once we found the right guy and hit our stride, it all clicked.” The “right guy” was musician and producer Jeff Pilson, whose credits on bass include stints with Foreigner, Dio and the heavy metal band Dokken. Thomas, who first made his voice heard as lead singer on the Elvin Bishop Group’s 1975 hit “Fooled Around and Fell In Love,” said Pilson helped create the edge and provide the incentive for Thomas and Starship to finally complete the album. “Once he came in, we found our musical direction,” Thomas, 64, says. He helped us craft something classic, but with modern elements.” Like many albums, Loveless Fascination explores a theme familiar to many — relationships that don’t work out. Songs include titles that hearken back to and support the theme: “You Never Know,” “Nothing Can Keep Me From You” and “It’s Not the Same As Love.” “But that’s OK,” Thomas says, noting that Starship is hardly the first band to exploit that particular human condition. “The Eagles made quite a career out of that.” Starship — originally called Jefferson Starship, then simply Starship — had a tumultuous decade during the 1980s, which is when the band produced some of its biggest hits while Slick was sharing lead vocal

duties with Thomas. “Sara” and “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” were both monster hits. But the single that drew the most attention — and criticism — was 1985’s musically polarizing “We Built This City.” Critics reviled the song and claimed the band — which, as Jefferson Airplane, had iconic counter-culture hits in the late ’60s hits like “Somebody to Love,” “White Rabbit” and “Volunteers” — had sold out. In hindsight, Thomas understands why the band took a lot of heat for that particular song. “A lot of rock and roll bands were sort of catering more towards contemporary hits radio,” Thomas told the Web site Ultimate Classic Rock in September. “I think for a band like Starship ... the standards were so different for a band that emerged out of the ’60s from Jefferson Airplane. So people had a tendency to really romanticize that era and the whole counter-cultural and underground aspect of music in the ’60s. I think as I’ve said before that ‘We Built This City’ just kind of became the poster child of a whole trend of music that a lot of people didn’t care for, whether they were wrong or right.” Sounds like Thomas wishes the band never recorded that song and would toss it in the trash if given a second chance, right? No way. “Would I take it back? The first No. 1 single in the history of the band? That was an exciting time for us. We were digging that,” he says. “And the song, we accomplished exactly what we set out to accomplish. We thought, ‘We’re going to reinvent the band, this is the sound we’re going for and we’re going to use all of these new modern machines, techniques and recording processes and sounds to our advantage and have fun with it.’ It was like a whole new palette of colors to work with. So that’s what we set out to do and we did it.” Because Starship is promoting the new album, its audience can expect to hear at least three cuts from Loveless Fascination — perhaps even more — when the band performs Friday night, March 28, at the Golden Nugget Atlantic City. But Thomas knows audience really want to hear the band’s hits, so they’ll probably slide the new songs in and around the classics. “It’s tough, but a lot of times, it has to do with where you place the new songs in the set list,” he says. “I’ve found that you don’t want to come right out of the gate with one, but if you place them kind of early in the show, the audience is a little more responsive.” n

Hunger for ‘Divergent’ Shailene Woodley shines in mildly engaging YA start-up By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com

I

had the opportunity to see Shailene Woodley just as she was poised on the brink of stardom, co-starring with George Clooney in the Toronto Film Festival debut of The Descendents. At the press conference for the film she was comfortable in her surroundings, which including the massive crush of press attendees hanging on every word George Clooney had to say. She answered questions with a poise that suggested she could handle her own possible stardom down the road. Her performance in The Descendents suggesting that stardom would soon arrive. Since then she has earned rave reviews for her performance in The Spectacular Now and is currently the face of the latest Young Adult (YA) franchise, with the release of Divergent, the first of three Veronica Roth YA novels to be filmed. Divergent has numerous similarities to The Hunger Games, in particular a female teen protagonist facing a dystopian future where she is considered dangerous. The first impression left by the film is that Woodley’s star quality is the main attraction in a storyline that feels too much like a Hunger Games-lite rip-off. In Divergent the society isn’t as horrible as The Hunger Games; kids aren’t being sent off to be killed in a yearly ritual of punishment for a rebellion from decades earlier. Still, it is a world in a post-apocalypse landscape. In the former city of Chicago, people are strictly divided into factions: Abnegation, for the selfless; Amity, for the peaceful; Candor, for the honest; Dauntless, for the brave; and Erudite, for the intelligent. Each year, all sixteen-year-olds take an aptitude test that will tell them for which faction they are best suited. Beatrice (Woodley), a 16-year-old mem-

ber of Abnegation, is confused when her test results show that she is divergent, that she has the qualities of multiple factions. This makes her different and dangerous according to the laws of the society so she must hide her status. She joins Dauntless and begins her training to become a badass. From here the story is not as compelling as one would hope, although Woodley and Theo James as her instructor/hot guy to fall in love with try to keep us interested while Tris (her new nickname) tries to keep up with the bigger, strong recruits. The training is interspersed with a political battle as the Erudite leaders, in particular, Jeanine (Kate Winslet) are tired of a system in which the Abnegation crew are in charge because of their selfless natures. In other words, the system is perfect except when it interferes with one’s political desires. It makes one wonder why there isn’t a faction for Ambition, because it is certainly in play. The action sequences are solid and the acting ranges from excellent — Woodley, James, Winslet, Ashley Judd as Tris’ mom — to a waste of talent with the likes of Tony Goldwyn and Mekhi Phifer given little to do. Woodley, however, is strong enough for one to hope that the next chapter of the series will have more energy and flow than the debut effort. n

She joins Dauntless and begins her training to become a badass.

EVENT INFO Haggard is my absolute favorite. When I really decided I wanted to do this, it was during The Highwaymen tour. I was probably about 15; that’s when country became like rock ’n’ roll to me. I remember Johnny Cash and Kristofferson. It was nothing fancy they were doing but it was very hardcore. Selling music these days is so involved with social media. Do you do any of that or do you have people do it for you? I have people do it for me. I’ve never been on any of it. You’ve been to Atlantic City several times. Some people might be surprised that you have a strong following in the northeast. It used to be different [playing in traditional country cities vs. the northeast]. It seems like its pretty even now. I love going to the northeast and I hope it does snow again. I had my dog with me last time and I had never seen snow on a beach.

Bakersfield Balladeer

Gary Allan, a country artist true to his California roots of heartaches and honky-tonks, plays the House of Blues March 28 By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com

20

MARCH 27 - APRIL 2, 2014 • ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY

T

he traditional side of country music is hard to find these days. Country radio and country music charts are dominated by what I call the “backward baseball cap brigade,” a bunch of soundalike male singers whose love of rock and pop have flooded the country radio airwaves and made it a lot harder for traditional country to find a place at modern country radio stations. I can’t blame them for doing what’s popular these days, but I’m reserving my praise for true country artists who won’t turn their back on the roots of country music. One of the very best of these traditionalists, Gary Allan, headlines at the House of Blues this Friday. Allan, born in a musical family, was playing with his dad’s band in honky-tonks in and around La Mirada, Calif., north of Bakersfield, when he was 12 years old. A particular brand of country music, the Bakersfield sound has a raw edge and was forged by artists like Buck Owens and Merle Haggard as an alternative to the slick, string orchestra-dominated Nashville Sound that became popular in the late 1950s. Younger fans of the Bakersfield tradition, in particular Dwight Yoakam and Allan, have carried on the sound at a time when once again, Nashville has drifted away from tradition. That said, Gary Allan is just too good to be ignored with a distinctive, whiskey-soaked vocal style, nearly as many tattoos as Brian Setzer and the talent to move from a sexy love song like “Nothing On But the Radio” to a honey-tonk anthem in an instant. He is up for a major award at the ACM (Academy of

facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly

“I’m honored to be in the same sentence with those guys. They are my heroes — Buck Owens and Merle Haggard and Dwight Yoakam.” Country Music) awards show that takes place April 6. A song he co-wrote from his 2013 album Set You Free, “Every Storm (Runs Out of Rain),” is nominated for Song of the Year, his first nomination in that category. In an interview with Atlantic City Weekly, Allan talked about who inspired him, his love of performing and his desire to keep doing what he is doing for as long as he can. You once said you hoped you had a career like Willie Nelson, strong and steady and performing into your later years. Do you feel like you’ve accomplished that? I do. I’m well on my way, 20 years into it. Country music has had so many different phases, now it is in a pop/rock cycle. It must be tough for traditional artists like you to get airplay yet you had a top hit recently, “Every Storm (Runs Out of Rain),” that has been nominated for Song of the Year. It must be satisfying to have that recognition from your peers. It does feel good. And you’re right; it’s tough to get traditional stuff on right now. Our current single, “It Ain’t the Whiskey,” is

moving real slow, but I believe it’s a really strong song, but it is super traditional. You were born into this business, playing honky-tonks with your dad at a young age. I know artists hate labels but your music has been categorized in the Bakersfield tradition. How do you see your music and how do you define the Bakersfield sound? I’m honored to be in the same sentence with those guys. They are my heroes — Buck [Owens] and Merle [Haggard] and Dwight Yoakam. There is definitely a different flavor that comes out of there. For me the background wasn’t so much bluegrass, it was more like The Highwaymen [the super group with Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson] and more rock out in California. I cut my teeth on Buck Owens’ stuff so I think you can’t help but be influenced by it. I had a diverse following before I had a record contract that was made up of hardcore punks, bikers and ranch cowboy guys. It was very odd. Who are the other artists that inspired you? It sounds cliché but it is George Jones.

Have you started to gather material for your next album? I’ve mostly been writing, then I’ll demo everything up. I’m just finishing up about 30 songs that I’ve written in the past year. I’ll wear those out and see what I’ve got. I’m well on my way into another record. You put so much of yourself into your music, so much heartache and soul. There is something so specific about your voice. I’ve always been lyric driven. I like the story songs. I like the songs that make you laugh and make you cry, that piss you off. The people that I write with, I always make sure that we write about life. To me, that is what country music always was, Monday to Friday, and pop music is about what happens on the weekends. It’s got to be real. You did a little acting early in your career. I wonder have you seen the TV series Nashville? I haven’t seen it, but I heard there was a character that was kind of based on me. I have a clothing store in Nashville [The Label, an upscale men’s clothing boutique.] We dress the show but I haven’t watched it. I need to. You’ve done this for so long. Are you ever tired of it, going on the road? I love to go out on tour. I’ve known people you say they are glad they don’t have to play clubs anymore or tour as much. I get antsy, especially now that my kids are grown up. I sort of forced myself to be home more when they were younger but now they are all over 20 and I love to go. I don’t think I will ever get tired of that and I think that’s what I meant when I said I wanted to be like Willie Nelson. I want to constantly tour. I love playing for people. ■ see more online @

Harry’s Oyster Bar

The newest in the Dougherty family triumvirate of restaurants, Harry’s Oyster Bar harkens back to the days of A.C.’s affordable seafood eateries. By Frank Gabriel • feedback@acweekly.com

estled comfortably into the ground floor of Bally’s, Harry’s Oyster Bar and Seafood presents the kind of comfortable, casual Jersey shore eatery one might have encountered decades past. Frank Dougherty, co-owner and operator, describes Harry’s concept — opened in 2011— as “an affordable seafood house harkening back to golden days of Atlantic City.” Dougherty, along with wife/partner Maureen, has the unique distinction of running not one, but two separate centuryold restaurants here: his family’s original Dock’s Oyster House plus the grand dame of local dining, The Knife and Fork Inn. “Each one has its own format and following,” says Maureen. The Harry’s experience begins with a serpentine bar seating almost 50, enveloping a wide raw seafood station from where the house’s namesake mollusks are prepped to order. Expect upwards of a dozen varieties should you visit, including local Cape May Salts, New York Blue Points, Virginian Rappahannocks and Wianno’s from Massachusetts’ Cape Cod. Serious oyster fiends will be pleased to know that their “Buck a Shuck” dollar oyster promotion has now been extended and is available at the bar every weekday evening from 4 to 6:30pm, one of Atlantic City’s very finest food bargains. Count on them being the very freshest imaginable, thanks in large part to their popularity and critical mass; Harry’s averages almost a thousand a day in summer and Dock’s plated 45,000 last year. Beer, an ideal accompaniment to those bivalves, is similarly taken quite seriously at Harry’s. Current draught selections, rotated seasonally, offer up the likes of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Cape May

Large format beers present even greater scope, eldritch brews like Pinkus Organic Wheat, Saison Dupont Farmhouse Ale, Rodenbach Grand Cru, and legendary Canadian golden ale Unibroue’s La Fin Du Monde. Asked what changed most since opening three years ago and the pair quickly agree — the popularity of their seasonal, exterior dining space. “The only thing that we did underestimate was the popularity of outside,” says Frank. “By the second season we had exploded.” Fronting the pretty open real estate of the Dennis Courtyard, overlooking the Boardwalk and ocean, Harry’s nearly doubles in capacity when that al fresco section returns later this spring. Live music will also begin reappearing

once warmer weather arrives, weekends in May and then nightly performances beginning late June. The biggest news from Harry’s, however, is a change in the chef charged with overseeing their kitchen. Taking the reigns as of March 12 was local industry mainstay Greg Huntzinger, a 1981 Holy Spirit graduate. Now, if this all sounds a bit freakishly déjà vu to you, that’s because it should. Faithful readers of this column will recall earlier this year we reported on another Huntzinger, younger brother Jim, assuming comparable responsibilities at the Knife and Fork. Call it destiny, karma or sheer serendipity, there is an undeniably cool synergy to these scrupulous siblings — the culinary

609-431-0092 harrysoysterbar.com

equivalent of made men — joining forces with A.C.’s first family of restaurateurs. Asked about how the process of his hiring occurred, Greg tells us, “I was minding my own business and basically found out that Frank had asked Jim if he knew a chef. Jim told him that he only knew of one he could recommend and that was me. I met with Frank on two occasions and it was a done deal. It was enlightening.” Dougherty allows that once Greg landed he immediately began “experimenting with flat breads” topped with the likes of clams, shrimp or a traditional tomato and mozzarella blend. Other items customers might expect to see featured in the not-too-distant future are lobster mac-and-cheese, fried pickles, Cuban pork sandwich and a soup sampler. Also, look for Harry’s to offer an extensive Easter Brunch on Sunday, April 20. Later this year, Greg further hopes to target the outside bar with its own menu, possibly including items like a mahi quesadilla, crabs of some variety and a new recipe for housemade pulled pork shoulder. From this corner, we’re hoping he incorporates some of the Huntzinger family’s traditional German standards, especially the best potato pancakes we’ve ever sampled. Either way, a growing alliance between these two clans should produce memorable results for diners. ■

What has changed the most since opening three years ago? The popularity of their seasonal, exterior dining space, say the owners.

EVENT INFO

Jay Mohr: ‘I’m not going to ask you for canned goods or to make charitable contributions. I’m there to entertain you and take you away from the craziness that’s out there.’ By Ed Condran • feedback@acweekly.com stats, Mohr infuses comedy into sports.

“Hey, Bruce Springsteen, you’re a billionaire; you bring the canned goods!”

W

the lights. Mohr, a married father of two, might appear arrogant to some, but he’s a compassionate comic. The devout Roman Catholic helped Ralphie May when the portly comic was struggling. Over a decade ago, Mohr spotted May walking to a gig in Los Angeles. “He pulls over and talks to me and asks why I’m walking and I told him I had no other option,” May says. “Jay told me to get in his car and he made some calls and all of a sudden I’m opening for him. That was huge for me. Not many stand-ups will do something like that. It’s all about them. Jay has a big heart. He helped me a great deal. If it weren’t for his help, I don’t know if I would be where I am today, headlining theaters.” Mohr downplays his good deed: “It’s no big deal to do the right thing,” he says. “Maybe it doesn’t happen all the time in Hollywood, but that doesn’t mean that it shouldn’t happen.” A great reason to catch Mohr is for his impressions. Unlike some humorists, Mohr isn’t just doing lines from movies. “I think that’s cheating,” Mohr says. “That’s too easy. You need to take the next step.” Mohr doesn’t just do spot on-impressions of Al Pacino, Christopher Walken and Tracy Morgan, he does their voices in story. “I just have as much fun as I can up there,” Mohr says. “So just come out to the show and watch. I’ll do all of the heavy lifting. I’m not going to ask you for canned goods or to make charitable contributions. I won’t pontificate about what’s going on in the world. If I talk about what’s happening in the world you know I’m just going to make fun of it. I’m there to entertain you and take you away from the craziness that’s out there. We get enough news when we watch television. Come to a show and get taken away from all of that crap.” ■

hen Jay Mohr was growing up in the suburbs of New York City, the future comic-actor didn’t dream of being part of the cast of Saturday Night Live. Nor did Mohr fantasize about starring in movies or sitcoms. Mohr, 43, who was the first SNL cast member (‘93-’95) to write a tell-all book, starred in a pair of television shows (the brilliant 1999 Fox sitcom Action and the pedestrian 2008-2010 CBS sitcom Gary Unmarried) and made his initial splash in the hit 1996 film Jerry Maguire. But that

was not what he dreamed of while coming of age in Verona, New Jersey. “A friend of mine, Joel Martin, and I would sit in my dining room in 1982 and we would do sports reports,” Mohr tells Atlantic City Weekly. “We made believe that we were on television. That’s what I dreamed about doing, talking about sports for a living.” Mohr, who hosts Jay Mohr Sports on Fox Sports Radio everyday from 9am to noon (Pacific), is living the dream. “It’s awesome,” Mohr says while calling from his Los Angeles home. “I can actually pick up my child from preschool at 1pm and I get to talk about what I’m passionate about. I’ve been obsessed with sports my entire life. I think I offer a fresh view of sports.” While his peers attempt to dazzle with

“Why not play to my strength?” Mohr says. “I write a monologue every day at 4:30 in the morning. I have fun with it. I make people laugh. I guarantee you that [WFANAM’s] Mike Francesa isn’t making anybody laugh when he talks about the Yankees. I have freedom to say what I want.” Mohr also has plenty of freedom during the weekends. He has the opportunity to deliver stand-up, which is what he’ll do Friday, March 28, at the Borgata’s intimate Music Box in Atlantic City. “Atlantic City has always been good to me,” Mohr says. “The Jersey crowds are fantastic.” Mohr talks about everyday life in his act. “I just go on about the usual stuff that people can connect with who come out to shows. For instance, I think people can relate to what they go through when they go to shows. I hate going to concerts and having the lead singer talk to me. I hate hearing that I need to bring a bunch of canned goods to a show. ‘Hey, Bruce Springsteen, you’re a billionaire; you bring the canned goods! I just spent $1,100 for tickets to your show.’ And then there’s Pearl Jam. My wife and I were at one of their shows and after the second song [Pearl Jam vocalist] Eddie Vedder stops the show and says ‘Dick Cheney is a criminal.’ I said, ‘Eddie, you’re a criminal, you haven’t played “Jeremy” yet.’ Bono says, ‘Thanks for helping build 50 wells.’ Well, Bono I didn’t help with one well. Get back to me when the Los Angeles school system is fixed. I can’t stand that crap. Be like how old rock stars where. The Ramones only said, ‘1,2,3,4,’ and that was it. I bought a ticket to a show, just entertain me. And that’s the way I am. You come see me, you’re not going to get nonsense.” The freewheeling Mohr is loose under
