f you love our planet’s furry friends — or even animals with no hair at all — the place to be to enjoy all creatures great and small is at Ocean City’s annual ritual of spring, the Woofin’ Paws Pet Fashion Show. Decorated doggies and assorted pets, including a few patient cats, rabbits and even the occasional reptile (I remember a turtle one year) will compete in the Woofin’ Paws Pet Fashion Show set for Saturday, March 30, at Carey Stadium, 6th Street off the Boardwalk starting 11am, with registration beginning 10am. As is noted yearly in the press release from Ocean City’s wizard of events, Mark Soifer, “The event is open to any pet that will not eat another pet. We are pleased to report that in the long, colorful history of this competition this unspeakable calamity has never occurred.” Categories include best dressed, plus best bonnet, swim suit, cutest tail wagger, pet owner-look alike, intelligent pet tricks and most patriotic. There is a $5 entry fee that benefits the Ocean City Humane Society, a no kill shelter, named one of the finest of its size in the country. Spectators are free, but please drop something in the donation box in honor of all the pets we love. The event ends this year with a massive belly rub, as a thank you to all participants and in fond memory of the late Barclie, Ocean City’s legendary doggie, who was especially fond of the procedure.

series of qualifying battles has whittled an original field of a dozen bands down to three in Atlantic City’s version of the Hard Rock Café Global Battle of the Bands (GBB). The GBB features a series of competitions at 96 Hard Rock Cafés in over 30 countries around the world. Any band can compete, with the only requirement being that each band play live original compositions (no covers or pre-recorded music). Every year since it began in 2004, local and regional competitions give way to national and, finally, world finals in London, with the global-winning band going on a world tour and netting $100,000 worth of cash and band equipment. The runner-up and third place finishers earn lesser cash prizes. Atlantic City’s “Final GBB Battle” takes place 9pm Friday, March 29, at the Taj Mahal’s Hard Rock Café. The final three bands, as voted by a panel of judges, are the Creeptones (Carmine Stoppiello, Will Hernandez, Johnny Vines and Tom Cirillo), Young and Wise (Josh Wise, Tyler Young and Ken Young) and Cheezy and the Crackers (Cheezy McNasty, Randy Richardson, Ryan Monaghan, Mike Sarkady, DJ Barely Sober, Derek Flodmond and Dougie Neder). The event is free and open to the public. Visit hardrock.com for more.

For more than 10 years it seemed like a new David Bowie album was just not going to happen. Then, out of nowhere, comes The Next Day, the 66-year-old rock idol’s bleakest album ever. Like his hero Bob Dylan’s last album, Tempest, Tempest Bowie’s 24th album works with themes of death, brutality, history, war, murder and other scary monsters. Luckily, Bowie’s voice is in a lot better shape than Dylan’s these days and his melodies are sharper. The 14 new songs range in style, but are rock-based for the most part and some might say overly produced by Bowie and long-time cohort Tony Visconti. But with a fascinating — if not the strangest one ever released — album cover that symbolically erases his past, especially his 1977 masterwork “Heroes,” Bowie’s new album is a rewarding listen. Especially in the vintage-sounding “Valentine’s Day,” “The Stars (Are Out Tonight)” and “Dancing Out in Space.“ The Next Day is more than simply Bowie’s next album; it’s a small dark movie decades in the making — or unmaking. — Jeff Schwachter

Miss America ‘Has Been Here Before’ By Jeff Schwachter, Donald Kravitz

T

he Miss America Pageant will not be held on a Saturday this year, likely due to ABC running Saturday night football in September. On Wednesday, March 20, the date for the Miss America pageant, which is returning to Atlantic City this September, was finally announced. The pageant will be held Sunday night, Sept. 15, according to The Miss America Organization (MAO) and the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA), the Atlantic City Alliance (ACA) and the Atlantic City Convention & Visitors Authority (ACCVA). “Miss America’s return to her home in Atlantic City, New Jersey will be a 13-day event following Labor Day weekend and will include three nights of Preliminary Competitions that will take place on Sept. 10, 11 and 12 at Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall,” read the statement released Wednesday by the MAO. “This historic return to Atlantic City will be a monumental event complete with the much anticipated Miss America ‘Show Us Your Shoes Parade’ that will be held on the famed Atlantic City Boardwalk on Saturday, Sept. 14.” According to the MAO’s CEO Art McMaster, the pageant will air on ABC at 9pm Sept. 15. “We have not established a time just yet for the Boardwalk Parade, but it will be Saturday night for sure,” McMaster tells AC Weekly. “We are moving forward. We have selected the dates and we have been working with all the involved parties and have pinned down the following items; The Miss America family will be staying at all the areas hotels and we have nine hotels selected for the housing of the contestants.” McMaster adds that meetings will continue to plan for the September return, but that Atlantic City is not exactly new terrain for Miss America. “I want to remind you that we have been here before. Atlantic City is not a new area for Miss America so we have a good feel as to our needs. In related news, the reigning Miss America Mallory Hagan was in Atlantic City last week visiting Boardwalk Hall. (See more at acweekly.com) see more online @

his year we were all fooled into believing spring would arrive early, or at least on time, but sometimes getting fooled can be a good thing, as is the case Monday night at the Tropicana’s Comedy Stop Café. In conjunction with its 30th anniversary celebration this year, the Comedy Stop is reviving an amateur comedy night contest April 1 (April Fool’s Day) with the intention of crowning the Atlantic City area’s No. 1 Fool. The amateur-night format was a Comedy Stop staple back when owner Bob Kephart first created the club in a much smaller Trop venue dubbed “the dungeon” back in 1983 (it moved to a more spacious site in The Quarter in 2004). He has since opened another Comedy Stop in Las Vegas. “Back in the day we used to have our Comedy Showdowns [amateur shows in the dungeon],” Kephart tells AC Weekly by phone from his sailboat, Komedy III, in Florida. “We did those for about six years in a row and one of the people we discovered, in fact, was Ray Romano and several other talented people. But after a while is started to get a little old and we had some acts where the [joke] writing simply wasn’t that good, so we stopped it. “But this is our 30th anniversary and I wanted to bring some taste of that back, and I figured having it on April Fool’s Day would be a great thing.” About 15 amateur comedians registered to compete (the cutoff date was March 23) and on Saturday, March 30, a closed audition will be held from 1-4pm at the A.C. Comedy Stop. Those judged to be good enough to perform in the April 1 showdown will vie for the top prize of $300 cash, plus — and more importantly — the title of No. 1 Fool. The runner-up will get $200 and third place $100. “It will be me, my wife and the three comics who are going to headline that week [judging Saturday’s talent],” says Kephart. “We’ll base it on four or five different categories like personality, stage presence, quality of material, things like that, and they have to be amateurs. None of them can have worked and been paid for performing previously. After [the closed audition] we’ll decide whether we’re going to put them in front of paying customers or not, and everyone who makes the cut will be instructed to create an eight- to 10-minute TV-clean set.” The event emcee will be comedian and radio personality Scott Friedman of 100.7 WZXLFM radio (half of the Joe and Scott Morning Show weekdays 6-10am). “I helped [Friedman] jump-start his [comedy] career a little bit,” says Kephart. “He wasn’t really a comedian when he first started helping me out but he’s really fine-tuned some of his skills. Plus he’s a nice guy.” The Comedy Stop has a full kitchen open

daily from 5pm and during shows (9pm Sun.Thurs., and two shows Fri.-Sat., 9pm and 11:15pm), plus a complete selection of wine, beer, spirits and frozen specialty drinks. It has a daily Happy hour at the adjoining Cassie’s Bar every evening from 5:30-7pm. Starting Thursday, May 16, an all-new comedy magic show returns six days a week starting 6:30pm. Magician and Atlantic City native Joe Holiday will bring his internationally acclaimed, family friendly show to the A.C. Comedy Stop. Visit joeholiday.com. Besides Romano, other comedians who worked the Comedy Stop on their way up the ladder include Tim Allen, Lewis Black, Brett Butler, Drew Carey, Richard Jeni, Richard Lewis, Rosie O’Donnell, and the Margateraised, local-boy-made-good Butch Bradley. The comedian who literally got his stand-up start at the A.C. Comedy Stop, though, was Romano, who would go on to star in the multiple Emmy award-winning sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond. “I knew from the day I first heard [Romano] on stage — and he was very green at the time — that he was TV bound,” Kephart said prior to the Comedy Stop’s 25th anniversary show in 2008. “The biggest mistake I ever made in my career was having the opportunity to be his manager and letting it go. I was never a Hollywood guy, and management is not my area of expertise, but if I had done it I could’ve retired and we wouldn’t be having this show.” ■

tlantic City casino revenue dropped more than 12 percent in February compared to the same month last year. Revel, the $2.4 billion lifestyle and gaming resort that was supposed to kick-start Atlantic City’s road to financial recovery, filed for bankruptcy less than one year after it opened. And, due in large part to inaccurate reporting by television networks and news channels, there’s still a lingering perception throughout the country that Atlantic City’s Boardwalk was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. But Tony Rodio is the eternal optimist, a glass-half-full-kind of guy. Despite the ominous signs, Rodio actually sees a glimmer of hope in February’s casino gaming numbers. Rodio, president of the Casino Association of New Jersey and chief executive officer of the Tropicana Casino and Resort and its parent company, Tropicana Entertainment, said he sees signs that Atlantic City’s casinos are rebounding from the effects of the October storm. Even with three fewer days and weather that negatively impacted feeder markets in Philadelphia and New York, gaming revenue from the city’s 12 gaming halls in February was collectively up $7 million over January. “The signs that I’m seeing ... indicated that I think the momentum is moving in the right direction,” Rodio said during an interview from his Tropicana office. But as he travels around the country between the eight casinos owned or operated by Tropicana Entertainment, Rodio said he’s amazed to find people who still believe that Atlantic City was devastated by the storm. However, the numbers of those people are beginning to dwindle, he added. “I do think we are getting that perception behind us and beginning to see some positive improvement,” he said. A 30-year veteran of the casino industry, Rodio feels business will only increase now that federal disaster assistance funds are beginning to flow and construction to repair or rebuild infrastructures in areas severely impacted by the storm shift into high gear. He said a similar trend was observed in Louisiana and Mississippi in the wake of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. “There was actually a positive lift as the workers got back to work, and hopefully that’s what we’ll see [in Atlantic City] as we get into spring and summer,” he said. The key to Atlantic City’s economic recovery from the storm and the effects of regional competition isn’t to add more casinos or gaming floor space but to increase the number of diverse non-gaming attractions. That will continue to set the city apart from casinos and slot parlors in neighboring states that rely primarily on customers who live close by, the so-called “convenience” gamblers who once had to travel to Atlantic City to feed the slots

“We are beginning to see some positive improvement.” or sit down at a table game. Tropicana is doing its part by adding several new restaurants, including a branch of Chickie’s & Pete’s, the sports bar chain that’s expected to debut around Memorial Day. That’s the same target opening date as Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville brand at Resorts Casino Hotel, where the Landshark Bar & Grill will open on the beach on the 35th anniversary of the opening of Resorts, which was Atlantic City’s first casino. And further down the road — but still within sight — is the Bass Pro Shop, the ubersuccessful sporting goods superstore that will rise at Tanger Outlet’s The Walk in center city. Rodio said that one store will probably be responsible for bringing more new people to Atlantic City than any other non-gaming attraction or amenity. Fans of the store have been known to drive hundreds of miles just to shop at Bass Pro, which will result in more people spending a night or two in Atlantic City, not just a few hours. Rodio and his colleagues at Atlantic City’s other gaming halls understand that not everyone who visits the non-gaming attractions will automatically gamble while they’re in town. But some might find their way into a casino and drop $20, $50 or $100 at a slot machine or table game. “As long as we can get bodies into Atlantic City and ... get the bodies into the properties, you’re going to get ancillary gaming revenue,” he said. Rodio also noted that just seven years after Pennsylvania began offering slot machine parlors — and later added table games — gaming revenue in the Keystone State has already begun to fall over the last several months. Clearly, he said, that’s a sign that the same competitive pressure Pennsylvania placed on A.C. is now being felt in Pennsylvania from newly opened casinos in Ohio. n

nce again, greetings and salutations. And here we are, going into April, and the big question is: What about Memories? Well, you know we were slammed, and Memorial Day you will see a brand-new Memories — in look, in spirit, décor and excitement. Stay tuned and you will flip. The tradition will continue with a new summer coming our way. Now, let’s ask the Geator.

others, but they are not the right song. — Patricia Parker, Del.

Can you explain how special the Fifth Dimension was to the music scene, and who arranged Sammy’s version of “Up, Up and Away” that you often play on your show? — Vanessa, Ocean City

Have been a fan of yours for a long time. No one seems to know the name of the song that was always your theme song — not the Tom and Jerrio song or “The Discophonic Walk.” It was before then, and it was all instrumental, I believe played by sax. Thanks — Bill, Sewell, N.J. (formerly Fairmount, Phila.)

The Fifth Dimension were very special because they came along at a time when psychedelic and flower power were the rage. With their harmonies and the songs they chose, they made that style more acceptable to the general public. They also were instrumental in popularizing the songs of great artists like Laura Nyro, Burt Bacharach and Hal David, and Jimmy Webb, who wrote “Up Up and Away.” Sammy’s version, which I flipped over when I first heard it, was arranged by his musical director, George Rhodes — the first black musical director of a major network series (The Sammy Davis Jr. Show). Where can I find Crocodile Walk — the version played on your show? I’ve found

The reason you can’t find it is because it’s called “Alligator Walk.” It’s by the Mojo Blues Band, who are from Austria. If you go on line with the correct title and group, you will be able to find where you can purchase the CDs — in fact, I think they have an album by that name.

You’re thinking of “Jam Up” by Tommy Ridgley, on the Atlantic label. I also played, as an alternate theme, “Good Rocking” by Junior Walker. Jerry, I saw Dinah Washington at a club in the ’50s that I think was on Virginia Ave. Can’t remember the name of the club. Can you help me with that one? — Paul Sloan, N. Fort Myers, Fla. Sure can, but it was not on Virginia Avenue, it was on Pacific Avenue, and it was called the Black Orchid. Dinah was, for me, what Billie Holiday was to others. n

n the current world of bland, soundalike male country singers, the gritty traditional sound of Gary Allan stands out. Touring in support of his new album Set You Free, he began playing in his dad’s band from age 12, then hitting the honky-tonk circuit with his own band. Roman Grill Blossoms in Linwood

Roman Grill

Route 9, New Road, Central Square, Linwood 609-926-3030 BYOB

The owners of Northfield’s Rose’s Garden Grill branch out with new sit-down restaurant in Central Square.

inwood’s Central Square, after years of existing in a sort of culinary limbo, has seen a pair of exciting new restaurants emerge and blossom in the last six months. Roman Grill — along with nearby Chaba Thai— have combined to seriously elevate the food market in this upscale mainland shopping facility. Roman Grill owners Frank and Rose Trifiletti were recruited by Central Square management last May, after successfully making a name for themselves running a popular sandwich shop, Rose’s Garden Grill, in nearby Northfield. “They made me an offer I couldn’t refuse” is Frank’s tongue-in-cheek description of how Roman Grill came into existence. After committing to a lease in July, the couple spent months rehabbing a corner space near the back of Central Square before an autumnal opening. Results are instantly noticeable. Soft wood tones and a beckoning fireplace — still appealing given our lingering wintry conditions — help create a warm, casual atmosphere conducive to relaxed dining. Food is delivered via the talented hands and mind of Chef Geoff Johnson. The Barnegat native, who began his career on Long Beach Island, is most known for a highly regarded former restaurant, Cape May’s Copper Fish. Befitting that name, their bill of fare featured multiple species of exotic seafood, such as Australian barramundi, Alaskan steel head salmon and Brazilian pintado, a catfish relation. Johnson’s culinary point-of-view — “I don’t like to succumb to the norm” — will become more prominent with a new spring menu that is imminent. Specifically, he shares: “You’re gonna see the pacu ribs,” an Amazonian cousin of the piranha, as an appetizer.

“I don’t like to succumb to the norm.” We became acquainted with this species a few years back at Margate’s former seafood haven, Dune, and are thrilled to see another chef daring enough to include them. Expect the little fish, surprisingly meaty with clean, white flesh, to be doused in chipotle bar-be-que and served alongside a pineapple mango salsa. Another item diners should anticipate sampling soon are blueberry scallops, a signature item of the chef’s repertoire. Lightly seared, the mollusks will be plated with a blueberry/merlot sauce, reduced and thickened by honey. In general, Johnson plans “lighter fare and local products, not overpowered with sauces” replacing some of the more robust offerings

from Roman Grill’s winter menu. Serving as a vanguard example of that thinking is a recent weekend entrée addition, shrimp with spring edibles — sautéed shrimp tossed with edamame, shiitake mushrooms and baby Vidalia onions in a gentle white wine broth over “calice” pasta, an unusual, tulip-shaped variety discovered by Frank. Johnson has also made a concerted effort to keep most of his menu gluten-free, having become aware of the growing health issue from a devoted customer who followed him from Cape May to Linwood. When asked about that change of venue and how his food has been received thus far in Atlantic County, he allows, “Not a whole lot is different here. What I did in Cape May,

facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly

and I’m trying to do here, is various fish and shellfish, something they normally wouldn’t get.” Linwood’s well-heeled and educated customers seem ready and waiting for this; no less than a half dozen patrons stopped to earnestly congratulate Frank during a spontaneous, lunchtime interview with AC Weekly. Gregarious and comedic, he seems wellsuited for front-house duties. Which makes sense, considering that his resume includes time waitering at DiLullo Centro, a nowdefunct former Philly Italian favorite, and as a maitre d’ at Veterans Stadium’s in-house restaurant. But he credits wife Rose as being the true inspiration behind this latest venture. The couple met while working together at South Philly nightclub Egypt, where Rose was the head bartender. After stints at several other notable clubs, the couple went on to create Little Beef’s, a sandwich shop in Frank’s hometown of Glassboro. Relocating to the Jersey shore in 2004, they obtained a New Road strip mall spot that became Rose’s and have developed a sterling rep for quality midday eats. “Best sandwich this side of the Mississippi, my friend” is Frank’s description of the enterprise, which features colorful specialty sandwich names honoring regulars. Roman Grill, however, represents a milestone for the Trifilettis — a real sit-down, dinner restaurant. Frank explains the process leading to this development: “We thought we were going to move Rose’s into a larger space, but it’s so busy that we couldn’t close it. I want to take baby steps to meet the expectations of Rose’s customers.” n see more online @

For Easter Dinner or Any Time, Barrels Can’t Be Beat Many dining establishments have come and gone in Margate, and many more likely will, but the ones that survive and prosper are those that find the right combinations of friendly service, comfortable surroundings and, most of all, exceptional food. Barrels is all of that and more, arriving as a family-run restaurant in the downbeach community more than 25 years ago, and tracing its roots back to South Philadelphia in the 1930s and ’40s, when founders Jenny and Johnny Franco opened their first neighborhood restaurant. Barrels follows the Francos’ tradition, as everything is home cooked (under the guidance of Jenny and Johnny’s daughter, Rose Gualtieri, and her family) including an incredible selection of homemade soups, a recipe that earned

it the “Best Meatball” contest over 15 other entries at Tropicana contest, the best pizza you’ll fine anywhere in South Jersey, and host of entrees and house specialties that will make deciding what to have difficult. Barrels is the place to be if you enjoy dining out for Easter dinner, as there will be several tempting specials, in addition to their regular menu, including baby lamb chops; baked ham with pineapple; an Italian medley of cheese lasagna, chicken parmesan and cheese involtini in a Rosetta sauce; sauteed veal with spinach and mushrooms; and Sicilian blackened tuna. Barrels is open every day from 11am for lunch and dinner. Dinner is served from 4pm Saturday and Sunday.

Jim McGreevey’s New Life

Former New Jersey governor’s work with women in prison highlighted in new HBO documentary ‘Fall to Grace,’ debuting March 28 By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com

he last time most people saw former governor Jim McGreevey in public he was resigning from office in disgrace on August 12, 2004, declaring himself “a gay American.” After he walked away from life as a politician, he had to find a new direction for his life and the HBO documentary Fall to Grace, directed by Alexandra Pelosi, daughter of Nancy Pelosi, follows that journey. The film debuts on HBO March 28. McGreevey is now a spiritual advisor to women in prison, having spent three years attending the General Theological Seminary in New York City to earn his Master of Divinity degree. In the course of the documentary we see him at the Hudson County Jail and Newark’s Integrity Residential Housing talking with and praying with women inmates, most of them addicts, some former gang members, in the hopes of helping them transition back into their communities when they are released. McGreevey still has that easygoing charm that made him a successful politician. In the film, he sums up his current journey by saying, “No one should be defined by the nadir of their existence.” McGreevey took time from his busy new life to talk with Atlantic City Weekly about why he agreed to do the documentary and what he hopes to accomplish with his mentoring. In watching you talk about how your addiction was the fame of political life, were you at all concerned that doing this documentary would put you back in the public spotlight? It’s a fair question. When Alexandra first proposed the documentary, my partner and I thought it was better not to pursue it. I think what is most important is that throughout the documentary I worked to keep the focus on the women, to bring attention to their struggle and their lives. We took a group vote, the women and me, as to whether it was wise for us to continue.

facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly

You grew up in the Roman Catholic Church whose views on homosexuality are harsh. Yet you still retain your faith — how? For me, Jesus and the gospel message is about love and reaching out to all those on the margins of society. As a priest said to me, ‘Religion is what man does to God.’ Christianity or Judaism or Islam or Buddhism or whatever faith [you follow] is about yielding to our better angels. Religions are imperfect but that is separate and distinct from faith.

Former N.J. Gov. Jim McGreevey

“Addiction is a scourge that faces all people.” How did your life evolve into ministering for these women? Part of my seminary training was field education out in the community and clinical pastoral education, which is hospice and hospital care. For my field education I worked at a prison reentry program in Harlem. There was something special about it, something different and painful about men and women coming out of prison after long periods of incarceration. There must be great joy when you are successful in helping with the transition back into the world, but also there must be pain from the inevitable failures. Exactly. That tragically, is the nature of addiction. The goal is to understand the importance of treatment. Addiction is a disease and seventy percent of the people behind bars are clinically diagnosed as

addicts. Instead of just locking them up and having them playing cards and getting into fights, there is a much more profitable use of their time as well as public dollars: treat them for their addiction. It offers hope for a different way of life. There has been so much talk about gay teenagers and the abuse/cyber bullying aspect of their lives — what advice would give a gay teen? Or have you had the opportunity to talk with gay teenagers? Oh, yeah, I do it fairly regularly. The healthy place to be is in a place of honesty, authenticity and self-acceptance, but at the same time I recognize that isn’t always safe. I try not to be presumptuous and necessarily tell them to come out, but [help them] understand that being open and honest is personally and spiritually the healthiest place to be.

You joked in the documentary about being ‘good in the hood,’ comfortable in poor neighborhoods and in African-American communities. I’ve always been blessed to have support within the African-American community. Addiction is a scourge that faces all people regardless of race or socio-economic class and I’ve seen an increasing number of white women [in my work] that have become addicted to prescription drugs. We need to recognize that the scourge of addiction touches all families. When the devastation occurs, it leaves so much wreckage. Here’s my one political question. How do you think Chris Christie is doing? I’m personally very fond of the governor and particularly Mary Pat. I like to say he married way up. She’s so special. She cares about these issues. She’s been to Integrity Residential Housing to meet with the women. Clearly I’m a Democrat, baptized a Democrat and I’ll die a Democrat. On these issues, the governor has been extraordinary. He has a great sense of compassion and [understands] the need to provide treatment for addiction. ■ Fall to Grace Directed by Alexanda Pelosi Debuts on HBO East, Thursday, March 28, 8pm see more online @

VIPs in the House

Deftones frontman Chino Moreno stands in front of a sold-out crowd at the House of Blues

The House of Blues at Showboat’s Rock the Season VIP Season Pass is a deal that’s hard to pass up. By Jeff Schwachter • feedback@acweekly.com

O

some very avid concert-goers that will attend concerts, maybe two or three in a month, maybe six to eight in a three-month time span, so we felt it was very important to be able to put together a whole package to be able to encompass that experience, but also the things that are [included] inside the package we wanted to limit to a select few so they really feel like it’s a whole VIP experience.” A very limited amount of VIP Season Passes are available for the spring season, which runs April 1-June 30. The package not only includes a pair of GA tickets to any show at the House of Blues at Showboat that specific season (there’s no limit), but more. “These VIPs definitely do not have to wait in line,” says Davis. “As soon as they flash their season pass holder laminate they get to come straight to the front of the line and enter the venue. The purchaser will receive an official one-of-a-kind HOB memorabilia T-shirt, they get 15 concession vouchers to share with the person they bring with them to the concert, and they also get this really awesome refillable guitar cup that they can use as many times throughout one concert and every concert as long as they bring it back with them to whatever concert they attend.” The grass-roots marketing effort has paid off. Several of the spring-season passes have already sold and the promotion has caught the attention of the national House of Blues chain, the executives of whom are monitoring its success. The passes can be purchased via Ticketmaster and a link on the Caesars Web site. “They receive a really great package in the mail with all the attributes, a welcome letter

from myself and the team here, and a VIP laminate that they wear each time they come to the concert venue so they can access the VIP entry line,” adds Davis. “And all they have to do is go to the box office where their name is on a manifest and they come and pick up whatever tickets that they want throughout that season.” Although the concert line-up at the House of Blues at Showboat is always being updated, as of now, the announced shows for the Spring 2013 season include: Matt & Kim (4/5), Stone Sour (4/6), The Mavericks (4/19), Badfish (4/20), Three Days Grace (4/21), Pat Benatar (4/27), Shinedown & Bush (5/4), Avant & Carl Thomas with Special Guest CASE (5/5), Relient K & Hellogoodbye (5/11), Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes (5/24), Anthony Hamilton (6/7) and Billy Idol (6/8). It’s certainly a diverse line-up and Davis says that was a key factor in introducing the pass in the city. Not only because of the economic benefits, but to expose all the various music the House of Blues offers. “That was kind of the one the goals that we wanted to achieve with creating the season pass,” says Davis. “Because we program such a diverse amount of concerts here at the House of Blues, we wanted to make sure that whether you are a person that just loves hip-hop, rock, or what have you, you have an opportunity to see all the shows and you have the opportunity to be able to buy this in the beginning of the season banking on those shows that might sell out, such as a Morrissey or a Maroon 5 or a Billy Idol.” The season pass was an idea that came about in-house (pun intended) late in 2012. Davis and her colleagues worked diligently to kick off the

“This is a very unique opportunity for the House of Blues.”

ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY • MARCH 28 - APRIL 3, 2013

n a snowy day in early March Deftones’ bassist Sergio Vega and drummer Abe Cunningham are backstage at the House of Blues’ Music Hall. The pair is preparing for a sold-out show at the Atlantic City venue, a major piece of Showboat’s unique puzzle on the Atlantic City Boardwalk. “I know we played here at least three years ago,” says Vega, “it’s a great venue.” Despite the tough economy — locally and nationally — Deftones fans have gobbled up tickets weeks in advance, and there is a goodtime energy running throughout the property. This is not unusual for the House of Blues at Showboat, which offers a diverse slate of concerts nearly every weekend of the year, many of them that sell out. However, late last year, the team at Showboat (in tandem with executives at its parent company Caesars Entertainment, which also operates Bally’s, Caesars and Harrah’s Resort in town) came up with a new idea. Something that’s not available at any of the other casinos in town or at any of the other House of Blues’ venues throughout the country. The “Rock the Season! VIP Season Pass” is an Atlantic City invention and although the enticing promotion had a soft launch in January, the House of Blues has officially launched the deal for the year’s second season (April, May and June 2013). Candice Davis, the House of Blues’ director of entertainment and lifestyle marketing for the Atlantic City region, describes the promotion as “a very exclusive offer.” (Meaning: If you had the pass, which costs about $250 per season, for the year’s first season and didn’t have tickets to the sold-out Deftones show, but wanted to go, a pair of general admission tickets would be waiting for you at the box office.) “The season pass for the venue here at the House of Blues is … looked at as a VIP experience for the consumer,” says Davis. “We have

program this year. “This is a very unique opportunity for the House of Blues,” says Davis. “We are one of the only venues in the city to be able to [create] a season pass for concerts. [The] pass is a great deal, too. For what you would pay for four to six concerts in a three-month span, you have the opportunity to be able to see maybe 15 to 20 shows with the pass.” “We are very excited to be able to provide this experience for the customer and it is unique and one-of-a-kind to be able to come to our House of Blues, which is one of the best House of Blues on the East Coast. For several years we’ve been the No. 1 grossing House of Blues out of the whole brand.” Davis says more shows will be announced throughout this season as bookings are continuously being made for the venue. “This thing is ever changing,” says Jerry Eisenband, public relations manager for Caesars Entertainment. “So it’s one of those things that you want to take that gamble of getting the pass because you’re seeing this amazing myriad of shows that we have, and there are going to be more sensational ones added.” While the spring season VIP passes are on sale, Davis says by about mid June, passes for the third season will go on sale. “It’s a great season to be in because it’s right before the peak of the summer concert-touring season.” For a lot of acts, Davis adds, “When they have a choice to be able to play the Philly market they definitely feel like they’re at home here at our venue.” Cunningham and Vega certainly feel at home. “We had a day off yesterday so we stayed here,” says Vega. “I won $500 last night! And I had a great day off. We ate, kicked it and watched the snow today.” While the pair of musicians have had to tour the world more in lieu of selling records since the economy and record industry collapsed over the past five years, they see the value in a VIP season pass such as this one. “That’s pretty interesting,” says Vega. “These days, venues are trying crazy things to keep things going, but I didn’t know about this. That’s pretty interesting. And it makes sense, because it’s a different sort of [venue]; it’s a casino town and destination.” ■

‘Olympus Has Fallen’ lacks imagination plus Trop’s IMAX is back with digital upgrade. By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com

here are nearly as many clichés as bullets and bodies in Olympus Has Fallen, the first of two movies featuring a terrorist takeover of the White House scheduled for this year. Directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, Shooter), Olympus is the action movie equivalent of a Frankenstein monster assembled from other movies with the main template being Under Siege, plus a dollop of attitude from Die Hard and an overall blow-things-to-hell ambiance from almost any Michael Bay movie from the last decade. If it had come together in a marginally believable way, which would be difficult, considering the premise of the White House being vulnerable to an attack, it might have worked. However, it didn’t because the believability factor was constantly under siege, and despite the best efforts of a cast headed by Gerard Butler and Aaron Eckhart, the preposterous premise never gains traction. Butler plays Secret Service agent Mike Banning, the former head of White House security who is now stuck in the purgatory of a desk job at the Treasury. Eckhart is the president. When the attack on the White House begins (the bad guys are the North Koreans), magic Mike manages to run to the scene, elude the hail of bullets that is cutting down agents left and right and winds up as the last man standing in a body strewn White House. This is when the Under Siege vibe kicks in big time, because Mike is a Special Forces badass with a mean streak and like Steven Seagal’s Casey Ryback, he is the only hope to save the president. He even announces that to the acting president (Morgan Freeman) and the grumpy general (Robert Forster) on the other end of the satellite phone Mike took from the Oval Office safe.

The superior acting skill of Butler over Seagal is, unfortunately, made mute by the ridiculous premise, cliché-filled dialogue and the explosion overkill. Here’s hoping that White House Down, starring Channing Tatum, Jamie Foxx, Maggie Gyllenhaal and James Woods and directed by Roland Emmerich (Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow) has a better story on tap when it arrives in June. n

IMAX Goes Digital If you’ve been wondering why the IMAX Theatre at Tropicana was closed, it is because the theatre was being given major upgrades, including a digital projection system, enhanced surround sound with all new speakers, renovated seating and a new 55×75-foot silver screen designed to deliver superior visual impact and uniform brightness. The new digital audio system contains nXos, which helps deliver laser-aligned digital sound, and movie soundtracks are re-mastered specifically for the new audio system. The theatre had a grand reopening March 27, with G.I. Joe: Retaliation playing at 7 and 10pm before its official opening on March 28. The film stars D.J. Cotrona, Byung-hun Lee, Adrianne Palicki, Ray Park, Jonathan Pryce, RZA, Ray Stevenson, Channing Tatum with Bruce Willis and Dwayne Johnson.
