Cape May Green Festival By Christina Rodriguez

G

o Green Saturday, April 13, at the Cape May City Green Festival. This festival takes place rain or shine at the new Cape May Convention Center from 10am until 4pm. The theme of the festival is “Cape May - Home of the World Series of Birding.” Cape May is known for its bird observatories, nature centers, and wetlands allowing visitors to observe the natural beauty of the region’s seashore wildlife. To stress the importance of ecotourism, the city has been practicing and promoting sustainability because “maintaining the natural environment is critical for an ecotourism industry.” Cape May is a statewide leader in sustainability and won the Champion Award from Sustainable Jersey in 2011 and 2012. The city has also achieved the highly regarded Silver Certification from Sustainable Jersey in each of the past two years. At the festival there will be displays provided by several environmental groups with events planned throughout the day, including the Turtle singer to entertain the children in the morning, live music, an eco-friendly fashion show, and games for the kids. For more information about the Cape May City Green Festival visit capemaycity.org.

Looking for depressing music to be depressed along with? Birthdays is the real deal. The second release from 24-year-old Londoner Keaton Henson features sparse electric guitar and the quivering cry of Henson’s bone-chilling vocals over 10 impressive tracks. Haunting, beautiful and for the most brutally honest, Henson’s songs carry the authenticity and starkness of Nick Drake’s music with trembling vocals that somewhat mirror Will Oldham (on a bad day). Every song on Birthdays is a jewel, even if loaded with torment, gloom and descents into a deep darkness. Hey, lighten up, kid. You got decades to be down. How about a children’s album for your next project? — Jeff Schwachter

Enriching Lives 5K Run/ Walk in Atlantic City By Casey Harper

S

eashore Gardens Living Center and the MAPS Foundation have teamed up again to support a pair of worthy causes with the Third Annual Enriching Lives 5K Run/Walk pegged for Sunday, April 14 on the Atlantic City Boardwalk. Now in its third year, the race, which benefits those affected with Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Multiple Sclerosis, raises awareness for such diseases, and assists in enriching the lives of the local elderly community. Each year the race has drawn in more participants. “The enthusiasm and support we continually receive from our sponsors, community and entrants is so inspiring,” says said Janice Cambron, executive director of Seashore Gardens Living Center and V.P. of the MAPS Foundation. “Many have commented that the scenic course along the world-famous A.C. Boardwalk is one of the best to participate on.” The race will be led by honorary race director and WOND radio personality Barbara Altman, joined by V.P. of Seashore Gardens Living Center and elder care attorney Michael Weinraub, both of whom are runners. Racers are encouraged to pre-register by Sunday, April 7, at active.com or seashoregardens.org (for $25), while registration past that date, including the day of the event, is $30. Registration opens at 7:15am with the race beginning at 9am outside of Resorts Casino Hotel (North Carolina Avenue and the Boardwalk). Awards will be given to the top finisher in each of the respective categories, including Top 3 overall, male and female, interval age ranges, wheelchair, tortoise award, top fundraising team, and largest team. Additional sponsors are welcome to join Resorts Casino Hotel and Longport Media in supporting this cause — contact Sharon D’Angio at dangios@seashoregardens. org for more information. Enjoy the spring weather, take in the beautiful beach atmosphere, and contribute towards enhancement of our local elderly community. see more online @

Enhanced Social Life

Revel’s entertainment nucleus, The Social, has bolstered its spring scheduling with a variety of new entertainment. By Ray Schweibert • feedback@acweekly.com

L

eading into the summer debut of its long-awaited HQ Beach Club, Revel is also elevating its spring entertainment slate, particularly at the property’s two-level entertainment centerpiece called The Social. Thursday, Sunday and Monday nights will see new entertainment options, including a Comedy Social series starting April 4 that will showcase some of the biggest and best comics in the business in an intimate setting. The series will run every Thursday (9pm, $20) through June 27, and is booked by Rich Miller, the younger brother of acclaimed comedian and political satirist Dennis Miller (who performs in A.C. May 24 with fellow former Saturday Night Live cast members Dana Carvey and Kevin Nealon). Additionally, The Social will host a Revel’s Got Talent showcase every Sunday from April 7-June 30 with weekly cash prizes and grand prizes (held June 30 and July 7 for professional and amateur winners) totaling $15,000. Every Monday (7pm) it’s Binglo at The Social — a sort of glow-in-the-dark bingo game that’s open to all Revel card holders (ages 21 and over) and designed as a “ladies night out,” with hot guys calling numbers and checking cards, and weekly prizes totaling $2,500. Acts booked for Comedy Social through April include Alonzo Bodden (April 4), Nick DiPaolo (April 11), Dan Soder (April 18) and Rachel Feinstein (April 25). Opening acts will feature Pat House, Chip Chantry, Doogie Horner and Pat Barker — all standouts from the Philly comedy scene where Rich Miller routinely books talent at Sansome Street’s Helium Comedy Club (owned by Cherry Hill’s Marc Grossman, who also owns Helium clubs in Buffalo, N.Y., and Portland, Oregon.) “I think it’s going to be a good night of comedy,” says Miller, owner of the Cap City Comedy Club in Austin, Texas, and a comedy booking agent since 1987. “All of these people have solid credits — Comedy Central, late-night kind of stuff — just good, solid comedians who are very funny. “The response so far in reaching out to the talent is insanely positive. Everybody loves it. And Thursday nights is a nice touch also because it still gives them the weekend if they want to work a road gig around the region … I’ve spoken with the people who run [The Social] and they seem to be straight shooters, so I think it’s going to be a good time. The comedians are certainly looking forward to it.” Miller says The Social will be configured to accommodate about 300 guests, making for the perfect-sized room to take in a headline comedy act.

facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly

Alonzo Bodden April 4

“Comedy was never meant to be played in the mega-rooms, you lose all the personal feel and charm of what that medium is all about,” adds Miller “Nothing beats seeing a comedian in a 200-, 300-seat room.” Visit revelresorts.com/comedysocial for more info. Structured similarly to the popular network television shows that feature singers, dancers, magicians, comedians and more, Revel’s Got Talent (revelresorts.com/revelsgottalent) was the brainchild of Revel senior vice president of marketing Darlene Monzo. It will be hosted by Maria Laina of Center Stage Entertainment, which is co-organizing the competition with Revel. “The Social is the perfect room to present a show like this,” says Laina. “It has an amazing stage for the contestants to showcase their talents and plenty of room for all the participants’ families and fans to watch. It’s a room that reminds me of Las Vegas — large enough to organize an elaborate performance but intimate enough to make a connection with the audience.” Laina’s responsibilities will include not only hosting the competition from the stage, but from behind the scenes as well. “Just like a hostess throwing a house party, I’m there to make sure my guests are comfortable,” she says. “For many contestants this is their stage debut, and you’d be surprised by how many talk themselves out of performing at the last minute. I’m there to give them that final push they need to overcome their nerves — and find their inner super star! “No two performers are ever the same, which is why I tailor each introduction to the individual,” adds Laina. “I spend the week leading up to the competition interviewing contestants and finding out what it is that makes them tick. After all, this is their moment in the spotlight and each contestant should feel like the headliner.” ■ see more online @

Short’s Career Stacked By David J. Spatz • feedback@acweekly.com

funny thing happened to Martin Short en route to his goal of becoming a social worker. He figured he’d be more successful helping people laugh their troubles away instead of trying to solve them. But even social work was a second choice to his initial career goal. “I was going to be a doctor, so I went into pre-med for two years,” he tells Atlantic City Weekly. “And then it occurred to me that I really didn’t want to be a doctor, I was just a fan of the TV show Quincy, and that’s not enough to get you there. So then I switched to social work.” Short was already at a career crossroads when he graduated McMaster University in his hometown of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Throughout his college years, he’d been performing in school plays and musicals, and the prospect of a career in the entertainment world was intriguing. But because he lived 40 miles outside of Toronto, he figured his prospects for getting discovered were slim. His college buddy, comic-in-waiting Eugene Levy, who himself was considering a career in show business, convinced Short to take a year-long break after graduation to see if he had the chops to make it in acting or comedy. “I thought that made sense, because you

don’t want to look in the mirror at 50 and say ‘maybe I should have tried acting,’” he says during a recent chat from his Los Angeles home. “It’s better to be looking in the mirror at 50 and say ‘maybe I should have tried acting, and you can say ‘wait, I did try acting. Remember? It didn’t work out.’” Because he was skilled at writing and performing comedy, he hooked up with the legendary comedy launching pad known as SCTV, where he began developing characters (like Ed Grimley) and honing his skills as an impressionist and sketch player. That training ground led him to NBC’s Saturday Night Live, a show that — like Short — was also at something of a crossroads in its 10-year-history. The show had suffered the losses of cast members Eddie Murphy and Joe Piscopo. To make matters more challenging, the creator and long-time executive producer of SNL, Lorne Michaels, had taken a leave from the series and placed the show in the hands of SNL co-creator Dick Ebersol, who was better known for producing television sports. “[NBC was] threatening to cancel the show after [Murphy and Piscopo] had left,” Short, 63, recalls. “So [Ebersol] called it the George Steinbrenner year, where he made a one-

year contract with Billy Crystal, Harry Schearer, Christopher Guest, Rich Hall and me to try this out [because] we were all pretty strong writers-performers.” The move from SCTV to SNL was a good one for Short. His versatility shined through, and his motion picture and television career began to soar. In 1986, he co-starred with Steve Martin and Chevy Chase in the comedy The Three Amigos, a movie that did so well that the three main characters became one with pop-movie culture. Short, who brings his stand-up comedy to Borgata’s Music Box Friday, April 5, for a onenight stand, hasn’t limited himself to comedy. He’s become comfortable taking on dramatic roles in films and television. And the experience he gained in his college productions helped him feel right at home on the legitimate stage. He’s performed on Broadway several times and has two Tony Awards to his credit. Short admits that Broadway is probably the ultimate challenge — and goal — for an actor, be it comedy, drama or music. Even though he’d been a professional actor for 20 years, his Broadway debut in 1993 was a pivotal moment in his career. “[Broadway] was the most exciting thing you could do because ... I had started off doing all these shows, but I’d never done them on Broadway,” he says. “It’s true about what they

Martin Short

say, if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere. It’s so symbolic, opening night on Broadway, your name is up there on that marquee. [I] don’t think you want to end your career by saying I should have done it but didn’t.” Short, however, always balanced his career with his family life, which forced him to turn down one of the theater’s great comic roles. When Mel Brooks was casting The Producers for Broadway, he originally wanted Short to play the accountant character, Leo Bloom, in the New York production. “I had three children, 15, 12 and 9, and this was not the time you leave for a year-and-a-half and go off and do a Broadway show,” he says. “That’s not what you do when you want to have and raise children, so it wasn’t realistic.” Short eventually did play the role when the show pitched its tent in L.A. after becoming a huge hit in New York with Matthew Broderick playing the role of Bloom. n

Sal’s Café and Coal-Fired Pizza takes over vacant Groveland Plaza restaurant space in Somers Point; the results are super. By Frank Gabriel • feedback@acweekly.com

ne of the most significant differences between today’s Atlantic City region and its precursors is our ongoing, rapid diversification of ethnic cultures. Nowhere is that more notable than in the restaurant and food industries, where waves of Latinos, Asians and eastern Europeans have become among the leading players. Should you doubt my words, just try finding an eatery without a Mexican cook or a server from Bulgaria or Romania locally. Sal’s Café, located in Fitzpatrick’s Jewish Deli’s former space on New Road in Groveland Plaza in Somers Point, presents the dining public with yet another new set of immigrants fervently pursuing their own personal vision of the American Dream; the Pira family, from Kosovo, Albania. To fully understand their journey, a bit of history is helpful. Strategically situated just above Albania proper — north of Greece and 100 miles from Italy’s boot heel — the Kosovo region has been a hotbed of religious and sectarian unrest for more than 500 years. Uncle and nephew Sal and Blair Pira fled Kosovo amid a spate of violence that occurred near the end of the last century. This was to be the final battleground of a notoriously brutal Yugoslavian civil war, pitting Eastern Orthodox Serbs against the largely Muslim populations in nearby Bosnia and Croatia. With family already established here in southern New Jersey, Sal gained employment in restaurants immediately. Finding kitchen work to be his life’s calling, he purchased Margate’s well-established Pierre’s Pizza eight years ago. This, in a roundabout fashion, led to the creation of the recently opened Sal’s. In Somers Point purchasing prosciutto for

“The room itself is now completely unlike the prior format.” that business, he happened upon signage advertising the empty restaurant facility late last year. “I liked the location,” says Sal, who, with Blair, quickly moved to close on the vacant property. After several months of renovation — including flying in a painter cousin from Switzerland to customize paint and walls — they opened over the 2012 holidays. The room itself is now completely unlike the prior format at Fitzpatrick’s, with an open dining space for close to 100 patrons on one side and a counter fronting ovens opposite. While the hook here is certainly coal-fired

pizza, Sal’s, unlike a recently opened pair of upstart A.C.-area coal-based ventures — Margate’s Bocca and Northfield’s Carluccio’s (both fantastic) — is also a full service restaurant offering three meals daily. This was nicely illustrated for us during a recent morning visit, when we sampled an expertly prepared “Shakshuka Jewish” omelet, loaded with tomatoes, roasted red peppers, zucchini, onions, minced garlic and eggplant. They have created other unusual omelet varieties, including a Reuben (corned beef, sauerkraut, Russian dressing and Swiss cheese) the “Ocean” (crabmeat, shrimp, spinach and Swiss) and a “Hawaiian” (ham,

609-927-8700 Open daily from 6:30am-11pm bacon, pineapple and mozzarella). Sal’s casual bill of fare is voluminous, with regular and coal-fired pies, stromboli, calzones, steaks, hot or cold subs, salads, wraps and burgers. A list of more than three dozen dinner entrées, combining chicken, veal or seafood over pasta, demonstrate that Sal’s Café is intent on being much more than another upscale pizza joint. The owner’s recommendations include chicken bruschetta — a lightly breaded breast topped with the traditional tomato condiment, oven baked with provolone and finished with a rosa sauce; chicken alla Pierre — breast meat sautéed with artichoke hearts, black olives and roasted red peppers in white wine; veal Oscar — sautéed medallions with fresh spinach and crabmeat in a cognac demi-glace and seafood pescatore — shrimp, calamari, baby clams, mussels and crabmeat in extra virgin olive oil, garlic and herbs in a choice of either white or red sauces. Specialty pizzas are fired for less than two minutes in the nearly 1,000 degree custom oven. That tile covered dome, which cost over $50,000 to install, brings together unique combinations such as the “Italian,” with hot capicola, salami, sweet peppers, onions and fresh mozzarella; the “Cosmopolitan,” a blend of portabella mushrooms, shrimp, roasted peppers, garlic, mozz and marinated tomatoes, or the signature “Sal’s Special,” topped by mozz, eggplant, artichokes, roasted peppers, chicken, portabella mushrooms and garlic. Gluten-free pasta is available here upon request, and the Piras have also crafted an in-house pizza dough formula largely derived from rice flour as well. ■ see more online @

Coal-Fired is Carluccio’s Specialty Combining the extensive business rapport and culinary capabilities of owner Carlo Citera and executive chef Michael Laurenza would almost certainly result in a sure-fire winning combination, and Carluccio’s Coal Fired Pizza of Northfield is tangible proof. “[Citera] has a very unique style and has been in the restaurant business for years, and his executive chef [Laurenza] is incredible and brings with him a lot of expertise,” says Carluccio’s Chris Fahy. “The quality of the food and the quality of the preparation is outstanding. I’ve been in the industry about 15 years and I’ve never seen an establishment as consistently busy from when you open the door to when you close the door at night. It’s a good problem to have.” Carluccio’s has a special catering menu and delivery is available throughout Northfield, Linwood and Somers Point. Its

regular menu is family affordable and includes some savory items providing a unique taste experience. “The buffalo wings are amazing,” says Fahy. “We actually cook them in the coal-fire oven that we have for the pizza. I love buffalo wings and can probably eat a hundred, but after trying these I don’t think I can eat another regular buffalo wing again.”

Sat., April 6, 8pm Borgata Event Center, Atlantic City • $46.50

EVENT INFO And then he invited me to open for him a number of times out on the road, so when I did that, he had had his TV show for about a year. And then I opened for him again after his TV show had been out for about five years. The difference in his level of stardom was through the roof. That first year the show hadn’t really taken off, and then he became a superstar. But it was very thrilling. That was my first experience performing in a theater — opening for him — and that gave me the drive to want to do that myself. It was like wow, if I can get a handful of people together in a place like this that want to watch my comedy this could be the life.

Brian Regan’s Never-Ending Tour Over the past decade or so the stand-up has gone from clubs to sold-out theaters. He returns to Atlantic City’s Borgata April 6. By Jeff Schwachter • feedback@acweekly.com

A

lthough comedian Brian Regan’s life has gone through some major changes over the past few years, including a divorce, some things in the popular comic’s life are just not going to change anytime soon. For one, we know he’ll be doing stand-up and writing new material until he no longer can, which should be a long, long way off. We also know he’ll continue to be huge in the state of Utah — where he recently set a ticket-selling record during a 10-show stand in Salt Lake City — and that he’ll be returning to the Borgata in Atlantic City, where he has done his show exclusively for about the past decade when in town. Regan, reached by phone in late March, discusses why he hates Wikipedia, how Jerry Seinfeld helped his career and his favorite apps.

Well... you got divorced, um, how else have you been? [Laughs] I didn’t mean to start the interview with a big bucket of cold water. Things are good, things are very good. You’re coming to Atlantic City in April. Are you doing a tour, or just a set of shows? I don’t know how tour is defined, but you know

Where do you live these days? Well, according to Wikipedia I live up in the North Pole. I grew up in Miami, Florida, but I’m in Las Vegas now. I’ve lived in Miami, I lived in Ohio for college, I lived in New York City, I lived in LA, and now I live in Las Vegas. I had been doing comedy on the road for a few years, but then I moved to New York to try and make some more headway and it was a really good move for me. I don’t know if I would be doing what I’m doing now if I hadn’t moved to New York. New York taught me the difference between just getting laughs and getting laughs that are kind of unique to your own personality. [In the 1980s] I realized that it was kind of hard to make headway in New York unless you were your own animal. Also, I went out on the road a lot more than other comedians in New York did, so I kind of tried to develop this act that worked out on the road but was also interesting and unique enough for New York, so I had the best of both worlds. I was reading on Wikipedia that you were in Boston over the past year. Did you make it to Fenway? No, I did not make it out to Fenway. I would love to see a game there though. I went to Fenway Park years ago when I was performing in Boston in the daytime just to see the stadium, but just walked around it on the outside. It was the most pathetic fan experience. I was on my tippy toes trying to see grass inside the stadium, I’m like, why don’t I have the courage to just walk up and ask someone if they would let me in? I’m just not that kind of person.

Are you a Florida baseball fan? I grew up in Miami, and the Marlins didn’t really come into play until after my childhood. I’m not a big baseball fan; I’m more of a venue fan. I like going to stadiums just because I like to experience the venue — look at the stadium, look at how it’s built, look at how close people are or far away from the field. It’s fun to go to a baseball game, it’s fun to go to a football game, it’s fun to do stuff like that. But I don’t even usually know what’s going on in the game. Do you have any apps? I have laughingly few apps. My 14-year-old son has put every app that I have on my iPhone on there for me. Every time he looks at it he laughs out loud saying, “Daddy, you only have two pages of apps.” I’m like: “How many are you supposed to have?” Then he shows me his and he’s just whipping through page after page — [I’m like] what are these things? I don’t have that many things that I want to do. He got me an Angry Birds app; he likes to play that. I’ve been playing that for about two weeks and feeling incredibly lame and guilty about my place on this planet that I’m sitting there trying to destroy pigs with birds on a slingshot. I have a New York Times app. Why am I not sitting here reading the New York Times instead of trying to kill little green pigs? No wonder we’re degenerating as a society. You were fortunate to open up for Seinfeld a number of times early in your career. That was a long time ago. We met each other before he had his television show at Catch a Rising Star in New York City. He hosted a stand-up comedy special on Showtime and asked if I wanted to be one of the comedians and I was incredibly flattered by that, a big thing for me.

Has your process of writing your new material changed over the past 15 years now that you’ve been doing a lot more shows and touring?. Well, there are different aspects to writing a bit. The first thing is the original inspiration. And I don’t know how that happens, if I were trying to teach someone how to do it, I don’t know how it happens. You just see something and boom, something happens in your head and [you think] “Hey, that’s funny.” It’s either funny the way it is or you twist it a little bit in your head. You think, “Hey, if I exaggerate this or change the circumstances, would this be a funny thing?” That’s the original inspiration, and once you have that you learn from experience how to write something that’s fairly tight. That’s the second level of writing: crafting it out a little bit. The third is hitting the stage and having the tape recorder up there. To me there is something beautifully simplistic about being on stage. Your comedy instincts kind of take over, and to survive, to get your laughs on stage, you quickly discern between clever and funny. When you’re at a keyboard, or a legal pad, the cocky ego part goes: “look how clever I am, look at all this clever, clever stuff I’m writing!” But when you’re on stage, clever doesn’t necessarily translate to funny. So you’re on stage and you have a room full of people saying “look how clever he is,” and nobody is laughing. So inside, your brain just goes: “Say this NOW!” You’ve been in Atlantic City at the Borgata, I think exclusively, for the past seven or eight years. You must enjoy the venue. Well, people might be interested to know that backstage they just have these big giant mirrors just filled with lines of cocaine, I guess it’s for whoever the entertainer is that week [laughs]. No, you know, the first time I performed there it was in the Music Box, and then since then it has just been the larger room [the Event Center]. I know there are some comedians who prefer the Music Box because of the intimacy factor, and I can see that, but I’m OK playing larger places where people are further away in the corners. I’m kind of high energy and I can pull the people in, and it’s a fun challenge for me and I enjoy doing it. ■

usually a band goes out and it’s a thing — they’re going to go out for eight or nine months. For me, I started my tour in 1984, so this is like the neverending tour, there’s no end to it.

That’s a dream come true, especially in Utah. I just read about the 10-night stand you played there last year where you are immensely popular. You broke a state record or something? It was at the big theater there and we were able to do two weeks worth of shows, five shows each week. And it was certainly different from what I usually do. But if anyone likes what I do, I’m honored by that. ... I go back there every two years. Usually my rotation is a year and a half for a place, but I try to hold off in Salt Lake City because I’m fortunate to have kind of an avid fan base there, so I want to make sure the material is pretty close to turned over — so I give it a twoyear break.

ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY • APRIL 4 - 10, 2013

So you’re not 55 years old? I refuse to go to Wikipedia because I think that their information is all wrong. A friend went on there and the first three things about me were wrong. They got my age wrong, they got my birthday wrong, they got my marital status wrong — 0 for 3! I’ve been divorced a couple years now, [but] it says Brian Regan, 55 — I’m really 54 — born October 2 — it’s actually June 2 — and then they talk about my ex-wife. I’m like, how can anyone trust anything on Wikipedia if I’m going to my Web page and the first three things I’m reading are incorrect? I just laugh, but I refuse to use it as a source because of that. Everybody who knows me knows it’s a pet peeve of mine. People will say look it up through Wikipedia, and I will not.

E

ight years ago Atlantic City’s stranglehold on the East Coast gaming market was still pretty intact, and the economy still strong, so any sense of urgency to diversify the resort’s entertainment options had yet to fully materialize. In that regard the Atlantic City Beer (& Music) Festival was sort of ahead of its time, and now plenty of people would find it hard to imagine what early spring in Atlantic City would be like without it. This Friday and Saturday, over 20,000 beer-and-music lovers will descend on the A.C. Convention Center for the eighth annual festival, which event organizer Jon Henderson keeps tweaking, expanding and improving from year to year with what seems like an all-consuming obsession. Each of the three festival sessions now has its own headline music act, culinary options have it looking like a mini Restaurant Week pared down to two days and one roof, and craft breweries are coming from every corner of the country to take part in it. Over 90 breweries, many bringing varied samplings of their libations, have made A.C.’s “Celebration of the Suds” one of the largest beer festivals in the country. “As a consumer and a beer lover you always want to try something new, something different, something that you might not get in a bar,” says Henderson, who created a YouTube video to encapsulate what the festival is all about. “We like to do that with our breweries. We like to ask hey, what’s new, what’s different, what’s coming out, what can they discover? Our beer festival has always been an opportunity

Eight years ago, the Atlantic City Beer (& Music) Festival was sort of ahead of its time, and now plenty of people would find it hard to imagine what early spring in Atlantic City would be like without it. for discovery, and we want to give you that much more to discover. “Unlike a lot of other festivals, we require the brew masters and the breweries to be present. And the breweries, with the addition of the music and seeing 20,000 customers in 2012, they’re blown away by what we’ve provided and put together in the last eight years.” Music has always been a key component to the festival, but in years past there was usually just one major headliner during the premier session Saturday night (last year it was punk-rock legend Marky Ramone). This year each session has two original-music bands opening for a different headliner, including the high-energy, New Jersey-based band Bouncing Souls on Friday night (9:30pm), the “countryfed punkabilly” trio Rev. Horton Heat on Saturday afternoon (2:30pm), and the sensational multi-instrumental fusion group Rusted Root on Saturday night (8:30pm). For the past three years, the presenting sponsor of the music lineup has been South

Jersey rock station 100.7 WZXL. “For us, it’s the biggest event of the year,” says WZXL program director Steve Raymond. “We’ve been lucky enough to collaborate with mastermind Jon Henderson on creative ways to make the already successful event bigger and better … WZXL has certainly supported Jon’s choice of bands booked for the event by promoting them on air and interviewing several of them so that the listeners could get to know the different kinds of live bands featured at the event.” Among the festival’s plethora of amenities is the WZXL Listener Lounge, which this year features a Backyard BBQ theme complete with a fire pit and waterfall (courtesy of Bayview Garden and Nursery in Northfield), a putting green, shuffleboard and beer pong. It is open to all festival attendees. “We’ll also give the attendees a chance to meet and greet the bands as they come off stage,” says Shannon Wray, marketing and promotions director for WZXL’s parent company, Equity Communications.

mong the musical offerings at this year’s Celebration of the Suds is a five-man band out of Philadelphia called Belgrade that will open the second session on Saturday (12:15-1pm) with several songs from its soon-to-be-released, self-titled, fulllength CD produced by Rainbo Records of California. Featuring guitarist Matt Hanemann, vocalist/keyboardist Mike McNelis, bassist Derek Zglenski, guitarist Jason Bucci and drummer Jeff Meyers, Belgrade describes itself as “offering layers of cycling guitar, nimble bass lines, snappy dynamic drums and floating vocals — the sounds teeter from an understated warm twang to a groaning twisted reverb-fest.” “We’re all from in or around Philly and started the band about a yearand-a-half ago,” says Hanemann, of Warminster, Pa. “I’ve played in other bands in Atlantic City but this is the first show that Belgrade that has done there. We’re super excited, and not only to do the show but for the Beer Fest too. We’re all huge fans and connoisseurs of beer, so when we saw the list of all the brewers that are going to be there we became even more excited about making the trip. We’re planning on staying the whole weekend. “[The album] includes nine songs and some interludes,” says Hanemann. “Overall [the songwriting] is a very collaborative process with the whole band contributing a lot. We have several influences, and some have been the heavier, a little more aggressive bands, but I think the main mission with this band was to make it more song based and very melodic. “We’re really excited to sort of get into the mix with the Beer Fest bands, because every band seems like a completely different genre,” adds Hanemann. “I saw Rev. Horton Heat, who’s playing our Session Two, at the Trocadero [in Philly] back in like 1995 and it was a loud, rockabilly, flamethrowing show that’s a totally different sound from our show. But that’s what this [Beer Fest] is all about.” see more online @

ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY • APRIL 4 - 10, 2013

mong the more than 90 breweries participating in this year’s Celebration of the Suds is Twin Lakes Brewery, located in the heart of the Brandywine Valley in Greenville, Delaware. The home base is appropriately named, as Twin Lakes — which will bring its Greenville Pale Ale and seasonal brands to the A.C. Beer Fest — is about as greenenergy conscious and adherent to a centuries-old brewing process as any craft brewer out there. “We only use 100 percent whole flower hops, never any preservatives or DE [diatomite pellets] filters, and our water comes from the Washington Well, which is this natural feeding spring that comes right up out of the ground from a deeprock aquifer,” says Sam Hobbs, who created Twin Lakes Brewery in 2006 with Matt Day. “We put it in at 30 degrees, below freezing, so it’s cold packed, and then it’s shipped cold and fresh to our distributors. When you think of Twin Lakes, think of the Jersey corn and the Jersey tomatoes that you guys are so famous for. “Once in a while, after hard day’s work I’ll ask myself do I want that couple of glasses of water I should have been having all day, or do I want a beer?” says Hobbs. “Well, they both should almost be interchangeable as far as how health benefits apply, and a couple hundred years ago, they were. That’s what we strive for.” Twin Lakes Brewery is a four-person staff operating a 26-barrel, stem-fired, solar powered and gravity fed brewery that produces “unfiltered, unpasteurized,

all-natural living beer” on Twin Lakes Farm, which was established in 1826. An arrangement with Kramer Beverage Co. of Hammonton will now make Twin Lakes available in the South Jersey area — including at the A.C. Beer Fest — thereby expanding what had been a somewhat limited distribution area. “We’ve always maintained a 100-mile distribution area,” says Hobbs, “which for some breweries would be handicapping their profitablility, but fortunately for us that 100 miles is pretty big. We’re so excited that Kramer has picked us up.”

played with G.I. Joe action figures with my brothers as a kid but that, apparently, does not mean I am part of the target audience for the supremely silly movies made based on the action figures and later the animated TV series. Since I missed the original G.I. Joe movie, The Rise of Cobra, this review will not be about how G.I. Joe: Retaliation compares to the original. As a stand-alone film, Retaliation is a mindless collection of actionset pieces, only one of which is visually interesting, a ninja battle that takes place with trapeze artists/soldiers flying across the face of a mountain. That splendid bit of action aside, the rest of the film features some of the worst handto-hand combat 3D scenes ever perpetrated on movie patrons. The film was not originally filmed for 3D so it was converted. The action style these days that features quick cuts and close-ups of an arm here and a flying kick there does not adapt well for 3D. It is hard enough to get a feel for the action with the use of close-ups; you are never quite sure who’s fighting whom and the 3D technology just makes it worse. Many of the fight scenes are murky in 3D and led to an occasion bout of motion sickness. Now, as you might guess, there are actors involved in this action. Dwayne Johnson and Bruce Willis, two action-film icons, turn up to provide the bare minimum — performances that should be in the hall of shame under the category “Best example of going through the motions for a paycheck.” Channing Tatum seems to have a bit more fun as the returning G.I. Joe leader Duke, but that’s probably because he gets to bail from this dreck when his character gets killed. Oh. Sorry. Guess I should have said “spoiler alert” before that. Thank goodness the summer will arrive

soon with a few action movies that hopefully will provide real popcorn fun rather than leave us with a taste of burnt popcorn.

G.I. Joe: Retalitation Directed by Jon Chu • Rated PG13

Just Say ‘No’ No is a film from Chile — based on a true story — about an advertising executive (played by Gael Garcia Bernal) who is hired to create the political advertising campaign to convince the people to vote against dictator Augusto Pinochet. In 1988, caving in to pressure from the international community, General Augusto Pinochet presented a national referendum on a proposal to extend the dictator’s presidency for another eight years. And while most everyone figured the vote would be rigged anyway, the team of TV experts on the “no” side used their allotted 15 minutes of airtime a day in hilarious, effective ways. The film is loaded with unexpected humor as we watch the use of slick advertising tricks to topple a dictator like he was a tube of bad toothpaste. Directed by Pablo Larrain, as the finale of his Pinochet years trilogy (Tony Manero, Post Mortem), No is both engaging and hilarious despite its serious topic. n
