For the Players: Borgata Hosts WPT TV World Championship
B
orgata’s Spring Poker Open, which began April 8 and runs through April 26, has always been a major event in the East Coast poker season — but this year it has added a prestigious bauble to its crown. The World Poker Tour World Championship Double Play Event, April 21-26, with a hefty $5 million guaranteed prize pool and a $15,000 + $400 entry fee, will be filmed as the WPT’s TV World Championship Event. Borgata is taking this prize away from Las Vegas, which has always before hosted it throughout the event’s 10-year history. The entire main event is being filmed for a three-part episodic season finale of Season 12: World Poker Tour on FOX Sports Net. The final table, which is when play narrows down to the final six players, will take place on April 26 with audience seating open to the public. The switch to Borgata was made in part because of the success of WPT events at the casino. Of all the World Poker Tour events since it first started over 10 years ago, three of the top events and six of the top seven events — as it relates to number of entrants — took place at Borgata. It’s an open event, so anyone who pays a $15,000 buy-in can participate. / By Lori Hoffman

For the Music Lovers: A.C. All Stars Kick Off Brigantine Concert Series
T
he recently announced 2014 Brigantine Concert Series, which gets into full swing during the summer with three live-music events in each of July and August, kicks things off Thursday, April 10, with area favorites Jim “The Singing Lifeguard” Craine and his Atlantic City All Stars. It will be the first of 13 free family friendly musical events this year. “It’s an honor to be kicking off Brigantine’s annual concert series,” says Craine, whose All Star Band will be performing the songs of legends like Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darin, Al Jolson, Dean Martin, Tony Bennett, Neil Diamond and others. All shows start 7pm at the Brigantine North School Auditorium — with the exception of Fourth of July weekend, when the Original Hobo Band of Pitman, N.J. (established 1946) plays the 15th Street Recreational Complex (6pm Sat., July 5), and the Jack Melton Band plays the Brigantine Beach Community Center on July 24. On the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend (May 24), the acclaimed Atlantic Brass Band performs at the North School. Other shows include the Bob Ferris Big Band (June 19 and Aug. 31), the Bubba Mac Blues Band (July 17), the South Jersey Wind Ensemble (Aug. 11) and the Tri-County Symphonic Band (Aug. 24). witnessed the success of the Backyard Bar when I opened [its forerunner] in Costa Rica 22 years ago. So we fully expect these two venues to truly take the Dusk Complex experience to a new level.” The Retro’s concept, says Millstein, will have an ’80s vibe and feature throwback music, era-apropos staff outfits, and dancers and disco balls to transport guests back to that groovy era. Retro’s nine big-screen HDTVs also play clips of movies from that time period along with band staples like Duran Duran, Flock of Seagulls, Blondie, Journey and others. Millstein’s original Backyard Bar in Playa Hermosa, Costa Rica, combines “all the luster of a tropical getaway with the vibe of a locals hangout.” The new Backyard here in A.C. takes that template and outfits it with three big-screen HDTVs, a premium DJ booth and a marquee frozen-drink bar. It’s open daily during warmer days from noon to 10pm during the week, and noon to 3am on weekends, and is accessible through the Dusk Complex or from the Boardwalk at Arkansas Avenue. The Dusk Complex is open every Tuesday (Industry Night with DJ Sat-One), Friday and Saturday from 10pm-4am. This Friday and Saturday, April 11-12, Dusk will serve as the official after-party to the eXXXotica Expo (ac.exxxoticaexpo.com), billed as “the largest event in the U.S.A. dedicated to love and sex.” Hosting the parties will be Teagan Presley and Evan Stone on Friday, and Tori Black, Allie Haze and Ron Jeremy on Saturday. ■

n 2009 a multi-tiered, 10,000-squarefoot nightclub called Dusk was unveiled at Caesars to much fanfare, and justifiably so. The club was cuttingedge in all regards, right down to restrooms decked out with such TLC they’d have caused Felix Unger to tear up. Dubbed “The Evolution of Nightlife,” Dusk supplemented its centrally located Funktion One surround-sound system with some of the best DJ talent worldwide, which remains the case at the club today. Five years after opening, though, ownership saw the need to evolve Dusk’s opulence in a way that would keep interest piqued on all of Atlantic City’s sometimes fickle nightlife fronts. Now Dusk has launched two new venues within the complex designed to appeal to a wider audience: Retro’s, which takes over the second-floor space previously known as the 21 Bar; and the Backyard Bar, a Caribbeaninspired indoor/outdoor venue previously called the Boardwalk Beer Garden. The rest of the complex remains largely unchanged, with 30 VIP bottle-service tables lining the fringe of a vast dance floor, and a music format that’s progressive yet still recognizable to those who may not be devotees of the techno or EDM scene. Hip-hop and party mash-ups blare to a spinning array of LED lights computer-synced to the music. “The popularity of Dusk has spawned us to rebrand the concepts of 21 Bar and the Boardwalk Beer Garden and take those prime locations into a new direction,” says Dusk co-owner Eric Millstein, “one which plays off of themes enticing to not only the Caesars costumer, but the Atlantic City visitor overall. We have seen a trend in nostalgia-style bars, and I have personally

most influential musical artists of the 20th Century. “I cherished the friendship so much that I made it very clear to him that that’s what it was really all about for me,” Valli said. “I wasn’t expecting him to call and get me a job somewhere or put me in a movie or do any of that. I said, I just want to be friends with you like this, and that’s the way we were.” Valli, whose life with the Four Seasons was well-chronicled in the smash Broadway musical Jersey Boys, said the stage show grew out of what was initially supposed to be a TV movie-of-the-week. The play dramatizes some of the non-music events that shaped the lives of Valli and the original Four Seasons, which included Bob Gaudio, who wrote songs, played keyboards and went on to become successful record producer. Valli may have been the voice of the Four Seasons, but Gaudio was its musical soul. Before they committed to the Broadway project, Valli and Gaudio had a heart-to-heart chat to decide if they really wanted some of their secrets laid bare. Two members of the original Four Seasons had prison records. Valli himself was no choir boy, having run afoul of the law as a teenager when he was busted for breaking and entering and served five years of probation. All of that was kept hidden from the public when the Four Seasons began producing one hit after another, including five number one singles and 15 Top-10 tunes between 1962 and 1975. The record label feared slumping sales if that news was ever made public. “[Gaudio] and I sat and looked at each other and he said to me, ‘Are you sure you want to do this?’ I said, ‘Yeah, why?’ He said, ‘Because if we do this, we’re going to have to tell the truth,’” Valli recalled. “I said, ‘At this point in time in our lives, does it really matter? Look at the world and look at where we are. Today the way things are, you have to get arrested in order to become successful.’ So we went straight ahead.” In addition to his music, Valli has also done some small acting roles, including seven appearances as a mobster on HBO’s The Sopranos. Valli played Rusty Millio, a member of one of Tony Soprano’s rival mob families. Valli’s character, like many on the series, met an inglorious end when he was rubbed out by hit men hired by Soprano. “I am so happy that [series creator] David Chase gave me the opportunity to do The Sopranos and created a role for me… [because] it was a highlight in my life,” he said. ■

is 80th birthday is right around the corner, and it’s been decades since his songs made any meaningful noise on the pop music charts. Still, audiences can’t seem to take their eyes and ears off of original Jersey boy Frankie Valli, who returns to Borgata’s Music Box this weekend for what is likely to be — if history is a barometer — another pair of sold-out shows. Valli has been filling the 1,000-seat room and hitting the gambling sweet spot by pulling in the right casino demographic ever since he began performing there five years ago. As a result, the falsetto-voiced lead singer of The Four Seasons has been rewarded with something that’s about as rare in Atlantic City as a $2 blackjack table on a Saturday night — a multi-year, multipleplay performing contract. Valli had performed at a charity benefit sponsored by Sinatra’s mother and Ol’ Blue Eyes sent word that he wanted to meet Valli. They hooked up at Sinatra pal Jilly Rizzo’s restaurant and lounge in New York, shared a dinner and drinks and quickly became pals. “I cherish the memory of being a friend of Frank Sinatra on a friendship level to the point where we really hung out,” Valli recalled. “We worked in Vegas, we’d talk on the phone, and if I wasn’t doing anything, I’d fly out and I spent time in Palm Springs at his house on a level the way friends would be, not with a whole crowd of people. It was Frank and Jilly and myself.” Valli also said he never pestered Sinatra for career advice or guidance, nor did he want the powerful entertainer to use his connections to get him a gig. He thinks that may be a reason why they were able to create a bond: Valli didn’t have an ulterior motive behind his friendship with one of the

f all the Avengers in Marvel’s universe, Captain America is the hero who wants to avoid the cynicism that the other superheroes embrace including Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Thor. For some, this makes him a little perfect and slightly dull. But me, I’m glad he strives to hold onto his “Greatest Generation” World War II honor despite the ugliness he finds surrounding him, especially in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Considerably darker than the original Captain America flick and following the Cap’s appearance in The Avengers, The Winter Soldier should be subtitled “Trust No One.” The organizational umbrella of the superheroes, S.H.I.E.L.D., seems to be rotten to the core, and part of that darkness is connected to Steve Rogers’ World War II past. When his boss Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) is targeted for assassination, Captain America joins forces with fellow Avenger the Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and newly minted sidekick the Falcon (Anthony Mackie) to bring down the latest threat to liberty. Since that threat comes from within an organization he’s sworn to support, Captain America must face the realization that his belief in honesty and integrity will be tested. In fact it could get him killed when he must defeat The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), an old friend whose memory has been wiped clean and replaced with a lethal-weapon mindset. The veteran Avengers writing team of Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely (Captain America: The First Avenger and Thor: The Dark World) provide a story with grit, and directors Anthony and Joe Russo (Community, You, Me and Dupree), while not obvious choices to helm a superhero movie, do a terrific job with the action sequences as well as the character details you would

expect them to nail. The addition of Anthony Mackie to this superhero realm certainly ups the quality level. Mackie, one of the best character actors around (The Hurt Locker, Half Nelson, The Adjustment Bureau), plays Sam Wilson, a retired air-combat officer who shares Rogers’ noble values. Add in his droll wit and his ability to swoop and soar as the Falcon, and he makes a delightful new member of the team. Johansson’s Black Widow, meanwhile, seems to have softened emotionally a bit from her previous Marvel appearances; maybe it’s the Captain’s goodness rubbing off on her. When it comes time to kick ass, though, she doesn’t hesitate. When Captain America has his ultimate showdown with the barely human Winter Soldier, Rogers’ humanity does make him hesitate. If he didn’t, he wouldn’t be the Captain. Stan, as his nemesis, does a nice job of allowing the memories of his former self come through the coldness of his ruthless super soldier facade. Chris Evans does a splendid job in the title role; it’s a shame that, since his character is more straightforward and less complex on the surface, he doesn’t get the acclaim earned by other Marvel stars, in particular Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man. Consider this my opportunity to help correct that perception. Proving his mettle in a story with a darker tone, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is an excellent chapter in the Marvel canon. ■

The Garden State Film Festival enjoys a successful debut in A.C.. By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com
A
tlantic City seriously rolled out the red carpet for the Garden State Film Festival’s big debut year, bringing in such stars as Ed Asner, Diane Ladd, Laura Dern, Bebe Neuwirth and Margate-born screenwriter Scott Neustadter. Spanning 184 films from 16 countries, the festival kicked off with a gala screening at Boardwalk Hall of the 1926 silent film The Black Pirate, accompanied by live music from Dr. Steven Ball on the Adrian Phillips Ballroom’s Kimball Organ. The event benefited the Historic Organ Restoration Committee’s efforts to preserve and restore the Kimball Organ as well as the Midmer-Losh Pipe Organ, the largest pipe organ in the world. Dr. Ball was the pied piper of the night — literally — as he played the Kimball; it was like being in a moment of living history. The movie wasn’t bad either: With Ball presenting a score he composed with a little help from some of the original orchestrations, it was easy to sail back in time to the high seas and watch one of the first great movie action heroes, Douglas Fairbanks, do what he does best. My taste of the festival’s offerings included A Fragile Trust, Samantha Grant’s relentless documentary about disgraced former New York Times reporter Jayson Blair. After viewing countless interviews with Blair, the young writer who fabricated his stories for years, I was both shocked and relieved. My take from the film is that he was never really interested in his job, he just wanted to be famous — and in today’s modern world, being infamous works just as well. Grant’s straightforward method of hanging Blair out to dry was simple: All she had to do was put him in front of the camera, and, for once, he did do the work, calmly discussing his faking of stories, his drug and alcohol issues and his wish that his superiors had figured out what he was doing sooner — all recalled with an amazing lack of remorse. In another screening, it was fun to revisit Atlantic City historian Vicki Gold Levi’s 1993 documentary/love letter to the town, Boardwalk Ballyhoo. Back then, Atlantic City was still rolling in the good times as the only east coast gambling mecca; it was a sharp contrast to our current economic downturn. Still, it made a welcome reminder of how our town has bounced back from adversity in the past. The highlight of the shorts program was the delightful animated short Listening is an Act of Love. StoryCorps, a company that asks everyday people to sit down together and talk about their lives together, brought some of their best storytellers to the filmmakers, the Rauch Brothers. Six of these recordings were turned into sweet, tender animated vignettes, ranging from a gay man and his loving mother to a woman who has total short-term memory loss and the faithful boyfriend who helps her cope. The result was an enchanting 20 minutes of life lessons. ■

It’s A Wrap
ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY • APRIL 10 - 16, 2014
he sweet science returns to Atlantic City on promoter for years, I had no choice but to be around it. My Saturday, April 12, when Peltz Boxing Promotions parents didn’t want me to fight but I asked and begged to and Bally’s bring a competitive night of fights to try and they [let me], and I never turned back.” Lamanna has made Atlantic City a second home, scoring the casino’s Grand Ballroom. The night’s main event pits the talented Jason Sosa, seven of his 13 victories within an A.C. ring. Each time out 11-1-3 (7 KOs), of Camden, against Michael “Lefty” he looks to improve on his last outing. “Fight night you’ll see me making the proper adjustBrooks, 10-1-1 (2 KOs), of Long Island, in a scheduled 10-round junior lightweight attraction. Meanwhile, the ments to get a victory — I will utilize smart boxing,” he middleweight co-feature spotlights a hometown fighter: says. Regarding future opponents, Lamanna seems open to Millville’s own Thomas “Cornflake” Lamanna, 13-0 (7 KOs), who looks to remain unbeaten when he takes on all comers. “When I reach that level where it’s for world titles and Ahsandi “Mr. Brixx” Gibbs, 10-3 (4 KOs), a native New big paydays, it really don’t matter,” he says. “But a dream Yorker who now resides in Tampa. Fight promoter J. Russell Peltz, a World and fight would be with Mayweather for obvious reasons ... International Boxing Hall of Fame inductee with a 40-year seven figures.” Lamanna laughs after that response, knowing that, career to his name, has worked with the very best talents that have stepped into the ring. Along the way, he’s developed a reputation for spotting championship-quality fighters early. Peltz sees a very competitive main event: “I think Sosa is one of the hottest prospects in the world at 130 pounds, and he has developed into a world-class puncher. He has knocked out his last six opponents, and the last two were with body shots. Having said that, he could have problems with Brooks, who is a smart lefty and can give Sosa difficult angles and tie him up on the inside. It’s a battle between Sosa’s power and Brooks’ boxing ability.” Both Sosa and Brooks know the importance of this fight. The winner moves one step closer to a title shot while the loser’s Thomas “Cornflake” Lamanna enters Saturday’s match at Bally’s unbeaten. (Photo: Krystle Clear Productions) chances take a serious hit. “It’s my biggest fight yet,” says the 26-year-old Sosa. “I’ve trained hard like I always with only four fights left on his Showtime contract, do; I have the best trainer in Raul Rivas. I also have all my Mayweather will probably will be long gone if Lamanna boxing brothers in the gym that had put all the hard work is fortunate enough to remain on the rise and get a title in with me in training camp. I’m more than focused for this shot. Realistically, he knows that he must keep winning to fight and looking forward to have a blast in the ring with remain a part of that future landscape. Peltz has promoted other fights for Lamanna and Michael Brooks. I thank him for taking the fight. I believe knows the kid well, but sees a real challenge for him come it’s going to be a fun and good night of boxing.” Brooks, also 26, says matter-of-factly: “I expect Sosa to Saturday night and knows Lamanna sees it that way too. “Lamanna figures to be in the toughest fight of his career, come in 100 percent and to come forward. I’m prepared for even though Gibbs has not fought in three years and lost this and ready to take him down to the fullest.” his last three fights [after a 10-0 start],” says Peltz. “All three bouts were against world-class opposition, however. IN THE NIGHT’S co-feature bout, Lamanna has established himself as a definite crowd pleaser. Having grown I think Lamanna is better than people give him credit for, up not far from A.C. in Millville, he consistently brings a and we’re going to find out about him in this fight.” Seven bouts are scheduled on the night, with the huge following with him to cheer their favorite fighter on. It’s that roar of the crowd he witnessed as a spectator growing up first slated to begin 7:30pm. Tickets are $50 and $75, in the fight-rich A.C. area, and his family background in the and can be purchased by callin Peltz Boxing at 215765-0922, Ticketmaster at 1-800-736-1420, or going to sport, that lured him into the ring himself. “What gave me the boxing bug is the fact that I was Peltzboxing.com or Ticketmaster.com. Fans can also log born into it,” says Lamanna. “My dad being a manager and onto GoFightlive.tv to watch action live online. ■

C
anadian actor Charles Ross was a university acting student looking for summer employment when he decided to put his nerd side to work. The result was a lucrative 14-year career as the writer and star of two unforgettable oneman stage shows devoted to his love of two epic sagas he’d grown up with: Star Wars and the The Lord of the Rings. The initial idea was so simple as to seem almost laughable: Ross would condense the complete plot of the classic Star Wars trilogy into a furiously-paced hour-long performance. No props, no costumes — just Ross himself, on stage, delivering all the iconic lines while manically switching between voice impressions of Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Princess Leia, C-3PO and 40 more characters. It was ridiculous geekiness. And it was really, really funny. Audiences loved it, and before long, Ross found himself touring the world. Four successful years later, he decided it was time to bring sci-fi and fantasy lovers something new — so he yielded to the inevitable and gave the same one-man treatment to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Ross will be having a busy week when he arrives in our area for a double-header. On Thursday, April 17, he’ll perform his One Man Lord of the Rings Trilogy at Harrah’s Resort, and on Saturday, April 19, he’ll perform his One Man Star Wars Trilogy at Stockton College’s Performing Arts Center. The Harrah’s gig was booked first, Ross says, and a few weeks later, as he looked for a nearby venue for a second performance, the Stockton opportunity presented itself. It’s not the first time he’s done both Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings in quick succession. “I’ve done the shows back to back in the same day,” he says. “It is a bit odd, having over 100 characters rattling around in your brain. But it helps me retool and keep it fresh [doing both shows]. It’s a nice change to switch it up.” He doesn’t find going from a casino audience to a college audience the same weekend much of a stretch: “Casinos seem to be more family friendly these days.” Speaking of audiences, one of Ross’ more memorable performances of the One Man Lord of the Rings Trilogy involved a special guest in the audience. “I was told there was somebody special in the audience,” he recalls, “and they asked me if I wanted to know who it was. I said I didn’t, and then my agent told me that Gandalf [Ian McKellen] had come to see the show. I thought the show went rather well, and McKellen hung around afterwards and told me he loved the show. Later he asked me to lunch on the set of the movie he was working on.” While his shows are usually presented as originally written, Ross has sometimes been known to improvise. “If a cell phone goes off,” he says, “I’ll react to that.” And yes, he does have the occasional heckler: “But they are usually not too mean, unless they are totally drunk or something.” He finds that people aren’t nearly as mean to him in person as they are on the Internet. “After I was on The Conan O’Brien Show,” he says, “I got some mean comments, taking shots at me. It’s the anonymity of the Internet [that people can hide behind].” This will be Ross’ first trip to Atlantic City, and he’s looking forward to it. “I’ve lived most of my life on the western coast of Canada,” he says, “but I spent four years on the eastern coast, and the Atlantic Ocean is different. I’m looking forward to seeing the Atlantic Ocean, and I know Atlantic City is a fun town.” ■

ach and every spring and summer season, the Borgata manages to develop, nurture and craft exciting new food concepts with which to tantalize local diners and regional visitors alike. Last August it was an innovative “popup” opening of chef Geoffrey Zakarian’s southern New Jersey outpost of his theatrically oriented NYC eatery, Lambs Club. The one-weekend-only run produced a menu of marvels: appetizers of foie gras terrine and a truly spectacular heirloom tomato and lobster salad, plus enticing entrees like rib eye of lamb, Creekstone Farms delmonico steak and a Chatham salt cod risotto. It was a brief, shining appearance that served to focus a level of culinary attention — and respect — needful and deserved for Atlantic City. . This year will see Borgata kick off the summer dining season in a similar fashion with the anticipated grand opening of the Borgata Baking Company on Friday, May 23. Located in the space that formerly housed Roma, adjacent to Starbucks in the Retail Piazza, the Borgata Baking Company will be under the capable direction of renowned executive pastry chef Thaddeus DuBois. Formerly employed in D.C. as executive pastry chef during the second term of George W. Bush’s presidency, DuBois’ ambitious bill of fare reflects those heady credentials. “Thaddeus is probably the most skilled executive pastry chef in the city,” says Joe Lupo, Borgata’s senior vice president of operations. “It’s been an honor to have him help us open and then return after his stint in the White House.” Developed in concert with Borgata executive chef Thomas Biglan, the new venture resulted, according to Lupo, because “we
Chef Thaddeus Dubois will head the Borgata Baking Company. wanted to create something that spoke to our customer base which we didn’t currently provide.” The emphasis will be grab-and-go, with limited seating, designed to allow a facile flow of foot traffic through that corner of the property. Among the pastry items DuBois plans include traditional classics like Napoleons, cheesecake and éclairs — but other, more creative concoctions are anticipated, too: cake pops, whoopie pies,
cupcakes-in-a-jar and French macaroons. Accompanying those pastries will be highend Illy coffee, warm breakfast pastries and sandwiches. Savory counterparts like chili — served in a jar like cupcakes, but with layers of corn bread instead — plus carved sandwiches of turkey, ham and cheese on small, sliced Pullman loaves of bread and a Philly cheesesteak croissant are also on the menu. The creation of those lunch and dinner

options, says Becky Schultz, Borgata’s vice president of food and beverage, “is something that he [DuBois] is really excited about, and he’s also stepping out of his comfort zone with some of the more savory items. The pastry and dessert end is just going to be a home run.” A final sweet element completing the bill of fare will be gelato. Schultz mentions that customers should expect a variety of fresh juice blends and other food designed for health-conscious individuals, including gluten and sugar-free pastry and gelato. Once completed, the overall renovation and reconfiguring of the space will amount to more than a $1.5 million investment, indicative of both the new outlet’s permanence and management’s confidence in DuBois’ leadership. In support of the debut, DuBois will be taking over a floral display located in the middle of the Piazza from Friday, May 9, through the end of May. There he will design his own magical, Willy Wonkaesque land of candy called “The Sweet and Whacky Edible Contraption,” replete with nine-foot tall chocolate sculptures and candy flowers. As for the bakery itself, the schedule is 24 hours on Fridays and Saturdays, and from 7am-2am Sunday through Thursdays. Borgata further plans a promotion where visitors may enter to win one of more than 500 rewards — including a Grand Prize of $1,000 bonus slot dollars — by purchasing a box of DuBois’ French macaroons during opening weekend. “Food and beverage have been a pivotal part of our success,” says Lupo. “This facilitated one of the few needs we felt Borgata had from a culinary standpoint.” ■
