Anthem Approaches

photo booth will actually give you the option to directly upload your photos to Facebook.” Many of Anthem’s components are not only new to Atlantic City, but to any nightlife scene. “I think that what’s been forgotten about by a lot of people is that nightlife is supposed to be about the energy and the fun, and that’s what we want. Everything’s visually stimulating. Every hour on the hour the DJ’s going to play a set of actual anthems — songs that stand the test of time whether it be from the 1970s, ’80s, ‘90s or today. We’ll have musicians playing along with the DJs — mainly three- or maybe four-piece bands. The bands will play in the center of the room, which was completely gutted and re-done.” The pair basically started from scratch, reducing the former 32 Degrees down to its shell, relocating the DJ booth behind the bar, taking the two main walls back about three feet and relocating the bottle-service areas there, and incorporating part of the Quarter’s second-floor balcony into the club. “We’ll conjoin the lounge with the balcony to give guests a way to feel integrated with the Quarter instead of isolated from it,” says Tsikouras. “Sometimes bigger isn’t always the answer — this concept will allow us to maintain the personal attention we feel is key to being a success in this industry.” Anthem’s Industry Night will be Wednesday, and will not only cater to hospitality-industry personnel, but those in emergency response, law enforcement and the medical field. “Michael Wamsher [a 10-year A.C. Police Department veteran] died in a car crash on January 24, 2011, and he, Lambros and I were all very close,” says Kauffman. “He was always at the club, and we’re going to dedicate Wednesday nights to him. We’re going to have live bands, DJs, inexpensive drinks — $3 domestic beers, $4 wells, and we’re doing ‘beer service’ instead of bottle service. “We want people to have a really good time and still feel like they can come back the following weekend. We don’t want them to feel like they’ve spent so much money they can come back the next night or the following weekend.” Anthem will be open Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday from 10pm and Friday and Saturday from 8pm. n

EW AS BUSINESS PARTNERS BUT longtime nightlife-industry associates, Carrie Kauffman and Lambros Tsikouras know the trends destined to fizzle and those proven to endure. The adage “times are always changing” may ring true more than anything else in nightlife, and keeping options fresh is as crucial to success as making overpriced out of fashion in an economy that has seldom seen more people with less disposable income. Kauffman worked for Tsikouras when he owned the former Zoom Bar & Grill in Margate (now Sofia), and worked with him at 32 Degrees Luxe Lounge in the Quarter at Tropicana when they co-managed that property for about the last six years. When parent company (and Quarter neighbor) Cuba Libre opted to expand its restaurant/ rum bar operation and phase out of nightlife, it offered the two the chance to purchase the property and become business partners. “[Cuba Libre] didn’t want to be in nightlife anymore,” says Kauffman. “They just opened in Washington [DC] and Orlando and will soon be opening in Boston and Chicago, and really just wanted to get out of nightlife in general. So they offered [32 Degrees] to us and we just jumped on it.” A smallish but high-end lounge specializing in VIP bottle service, the A.C. 32 Degrees opened in Feb. 2005, shortly after the Quarter debuted. Kauffman and Tsikouras purchased it in late 2011 and immediately began a major renovation project, intending to open the new room as a sort of hybrid Las Vegas-style rock ‘n’ roll bar and Miamistyle dance club called Anthem. Completely retooled and expanded, the new club is set to open the second week in May. “I’ve known Lambros for 15 years and we wanted to partner up and do something together, our way,” says Kauffman. “I think that we both kind of felt like, at this point, pushing bottle service and the VIP status [in a down economy] needed a change, so we came up with the concept.” The pair employed SOSH Architects (creator of much of the interior at Borgata, Revel and others) to carry out their design idea. Among its most unique components is a photo booth with live feed that interacts with a 360-degree cylindrical screen visible not just throughout the lounge, but from other parts of the Quarter. “They’re called ring screens [and] they have double-sided visuals so the outside and the inside of the screen both show what’s being played on it,” says Kauffman. “We’re putting that in the center of the room and basically the DJ booth controls everything. We can do live video feeds from inside the photo booth, from any of the cameras inside of the club, we can play music videos, movies, show a lot of crazy graphics — whatever you want to do. We’ll have a million different options. The

In the past, the Borgata has tried to avoid the Easter weekend, but didn’t dodge it this year. Unfortunately, Sunday’s main event, a $260 + $40 semi turbo event, brought in only 193 players and Saturday’s Omaha Hi/lo tournament ($350 + $50) only drew 54. Still, you have to give the Borgata props for rolling out some variety for the weekend. And if you’re looking for a bargain to get a seat at that championship table, satellite qualifiers for the championship event begin Friday, April 13, with a $270 + $30 No Limit tournament at 3pm. One in 10 players will win a seat at the championship. Five qualifiers of varying buy-ins are then scheduled for Saturday, April 14, and Sunday, April 15, (the championship is a Double Play with two opening days April 15 and 16. Sunday winners play Monday). The least expensive is a $135 + $25 No Limit tournament Saturday at noon that gives a championship seat for every 20 players. Hey, who can resist a bargain? Last year’s Spring Open Champion made about $277,000. In some other news, New Jersey’s attempts to bring online gaming to the state took another step forward last week. But throughout the Legislature’s attempts, it’s been understood that federal law would only allow the bets to be placed in-state only by New Jersey residents. However, a bill currently working its way through the Legislature — it was approved April 4 by a state Senate Committee — would possibly allow betting to out-of-state residents and possibly even international bettors. The trick is that the bill leaves open the possibility if federal and state authorities agree it’s legal. “This is another step forward toward my goal of New Jersey becoming the Silicon Valley of Internet gaming, generating hundreds of millions in revenues for our casino industry, thousands of jobs for Atlantic City, and tens of millions of revenues for our Casino Revenue Fund to help seniors and the disabled,” said State Sen. Raymond Lesniak, a northern New Jersey Democrat who has been the bill’s most vocal supporter. But you have to wonder if the move won’t just cause the same delays and concerns that caused Gov. Chris Christie to veto a similar attempt to pass online gaming in the state last year. Christie had numerous concerns that the bill violated federal law. The new bill will now go to the State Senate for a vote. n

HE BORGATA SPRING POKER Open isn’t one of Borgata’s signature poker events like the Borgata Open in September, but the event is still pumping some needed life into the Atlantic City poker scene. The opening event of the tournament, which was actually a pretty steep buy-in of $500 + $60, drew a pretty impressive field of 1,041 last Wednesday. That’s not a record, but close to 1,000 players (some players bought in twice) turning up on Wednesday before a holiday weekend is nothing to sneeze at. They were rewarded with a total buy-in of $520,500, easily outdistancing the $300,000 prize pool guarantee for the tournament. Exactly 100 players got paid for the tournament. The winner was Brian Lemke of Norristown, Pa., who adds $111,076 to his already impressive record. Lemke has more than $1 million in live earnings and more than $400,000 online. Lemke is the holder of a WSOP bracelet and won $692,000 in a $5,000 No Limit Hold’Em tournament in 2009. While that was his biggest payday by far, Lemke has had some A.C. cashes before, including a first at a 2009 U.S. Poker Championship event at the Taj Mahal, good for $38,000. Combined with this win at the Borgata, two of his three career firsts have come in Atlantic City. Lemke enjoyed a pretty strong chip lead throughout most of the tournament (he was the Day 1 chip leader) and went into the final heads-up play with Joseph Daddario of Hauppauge, N.Y., with a six-to-one chip lead. Lemke’s win isn’t unusual as the Borgata’s regional opens usually bring out a lot of local pros. Guys like Dwyte Pilgrim, Mike Dentale, and Lee Childs are pretty much regulars at Borgata events these days and have been playing at the open. Still, the spring open is a good chance for budding pros and talented amateurs to get some experience without facing down too many big time players. And you can expect some big fields through this week counting down to the Open Championship ($2,500 + $200), which starts Sunday, April 15. The second event of the Open, a $300 + $50 + $100 Bounty tournament attracted 329 entries. After that, Easter, and also the lagging popularity of Omaha, held down the fields this weekend.

CURTAIN CALL
From Current to Classic A diversified slate of entertainment is heading Atlantic City’s way this spring and summer. By David J. Spatz
A
N ENTERTAINMENT CLASSIC never goes out of style — especially with casinos and the people they attract. That seems to be the booking strategy at several Atlantic City casinos as they scramble to complete their spring and summer lineups. What had already been shaping up to be a strong season for shows is now on the verge of becoming the biggest and most diverse collection of attractions the city has seen since the dice began rolling down the Boardwalk 34 years ago. Predictably, the new Revel and its biggest rival, Borgata, are in the forefront when it comes to landing the acts that fall under the contemporary and classic umbrellas. Revel seems to be following the entertainment model employed by Borgata when it entered the market nine years ago, opting for a lineup of mostly contemporary artists. And while Borgata is always on the hunt for today’s chart-toppers, it began adding classic artists to its roster several years ago and appears to be ramping it up further this spring and summer.
“The [new artists] can only take you so far when it comes to drawing [gamblers],” says one high-ranking casino executive, who isn’t affiliated with Revel and Borgata. “From a visibility standpoint, booking trendy artists will definitely put you on the map and get your [property] name out there. But [younger] artists tend to appeal to younger audiences, who may not be [gamblers]. When you get into the classic acts, you appeal to an older demographic that may be in a better position [to gamble].” In either case, though, Atlantic City is the biggest winner because a strong entertainment lineup sends a message that the resort has “something for everybody,” the casino official added. On the classic side, examples of Borgata’s entertainment strategy include the Beach Boys 50th anniversary tour with Brian Wilson on May 19. The casino has also snagged The Jacksons Unity Tour, a reunion of the surviving members of the Jackson 5. Three years after the death of Michael Jackson, brothers Jackie, Jermaine,
Marlon and Tito Jackson will hit the road for their first tour together since their 1974 Victory Tour. The Jacksons play a one-night stand in Borgata’s 2,200-seat Event Center on June 29, followed one night later by the legendary trio of Crosby, Stills & Nash. Borgata has also booked a triple-header featuring three acts that usually play big arenas. Styx, REO Speedwagon and Ted Nugent will work the casino’s big room on July 1, followed by James Taylor July 6-7. But the casino hasn’t turned its back on today’s popular attractions, either, scheduling Florence + The Machine for May 12 and Pitbull, one of today’s hottest DJs and producers, for May 25. Revel, meanwhile, has only announced a handful of acts for Ovation Hall so far, but they include some very bankable and contemporary bands like Maroon 5 and the Black Keys for May 18 and May 19 respectively, Beyoncé for its grand opening weekend May 25-27, Kid Rock on June 2, Sugarland on June 15 and Seal on July 20. Revel will also present the Summerland tour featuring Everclear, Sugar Ray, Gin Blossoms, Lit and Marcy’s Playground on July 27. (See more, p. 27) More bookings are expected to be announced throughout Atlantic City soon. *** Boogie Nights, the original retro dance club
that’s opening May 4 at the Tropicana, was hit by a graffiti artist last weekend. But instead of having the perpetrator taken into custody, Dave Pena, the creator and owner of the Boogie Nights brand, took pictures and gave the artist a pay check. The Philadelphia street artist TheAirRat spent nearly seven hours at the club, most of it on a step ladder and his face obscured by a breathing mask. Armed only with a dozen or so cans of spray paint, a good eye and a steady hand, TheAirRat freehanded the logo on a wall that’ll be the first thing guests see when they enter the club. “We want the Boogie Nights experience to begin the moment people enter the club,” says Pena. “TheAirRat’s work is well known throughout Philadelphia, and I thought he’d be the perfect guy to give the club an artistic touch that’s right out of the era our club pays tribute to. He did an amazing job.” n

The Smithville Inn has been a popular purveyor of fine food since the Colonial days By Frank Gabriel
W
We both went that route, with different choices. The Smithville salad began with field greens tossed with sun-dried cranberries, sliced pears and candied walnuts. Wide, thin shavings of Grana Padana cheese were arranged atop. That Italian product, aged a minimum of nine months by government order — just like its more renowned cousin, Parmigiano Reggiano — added a sense of earthiness to compliment other ingredients, bathed softly in balsamic vinaigrette. My wedge salad brought a deep v-cut of fresh, cold iceberg, rendered pancetta and scads of crumbled gorgonzola. A surprising, sweet roasted shallot vinai-
grette added a novel spin to this classic American creation. We love when chefs take a standard and revisit it as such, just as a different vocalist or band makes a song their own with a great cover. Osso bucco — “hollow bones” in Italian — is a main course we rarely order. These slowly braised veal shins are darned tricky to get just right. Too long on the heat and their tender meat turns to shredded mush, not enough and the cartilaginous nature of the cut renders it at best, unpleasant. This version was ideal, thoroughly cooked but still maintaining the integrity of young beef. Cross cut wide with only
an inch or so of bone peeking through it was mounted on a generous serving of saffron risotto. Four whole baby carrots, bronzed and caramelized, were angled in repose atop the veal. Upon delivery to the table, there is no mistaking that the Inn’s chicken pot pie is indeed the house signature entree. First, a real pie-sized dish nearly a foot wide arrives blanketed by a dome of golden pastry. Then, digging within, its filling of white meat chicken, huge dumplings, carrots and peas emerges. Veloute sauce, essentially béchamel made with stock rather than milk, cradles this symphony and binds everything together. Desserts, also presented by our server, offered half a dozen choices. The carrot cake — seven layers of deep, resonant flavor, chock full of raisins and walnuts — was so massive a construct we wonder why it didn’t require a building permit from Galloway Township. Each separate sheet of cake was sizeable enough to extract and eat individually, swiped with a bit of the cream cheese frosting. I chose to close with something lighter, lemon cake. Simple, good yellow cake infused with citrus essence, topped by a sweet, creamy white frosting. It’s quietly comforting to us that places like The Inn at Smithville — originally a Colonial stagecoach stop — continue to thrive locally. Ably managed by the Coppola family now for many years, this historic facility still beckons a hearty welcome to famished diners. n

ANDERING INTO THE Smithville Inn on a balmy weekday evening just prior to Easter was like unexpectedly running into an old, dear friend. Welcomed immediately by a smiling, attentive hostess, we were whisked to a fine table with a view of Lake Meone. Shortly after ordering, a country basket of various breads appeared. These were complimented by tableside servings of apple butter, cottage cheese and a sweet/ spicy corn salsa. We’ve said it before; tableside food delivery of this sort is one of our favorite culinary anachronisms. Our server, youthful and filled with enthusiasm, handled this opportunity for initial customer interaction like a pro. I began with firecracker shrimp, five crustaceans, curled and crunchy, battered with a barely-there wasabi tempura. They were plated on a rectangular vessel atop crispy wontons layered with seaweed. A stripe of orange sriracha — that addictive sauce of blistering Thai chiles and garlic — added color and heat to the proceedings. Good stuff. My companion’s blackened tuna bites were equally well presented. Seven small squares of barely-seared ahi, surrounded by garnishes: pickled ginger, seaweed salad and “cusabi” sauce (a pale green wasabi/cucumber blend.) The fish had been exposed to as little heat as possible, rendering flesh sashimi qualities. Its fatty, nutty essence paired especially well with the creamy cusabi. Another pleasant option afforded is the opportunity to “upgrade” house salads with those from the a la carte bill of fare.

nected to the band’s new, and more commercial-sounding music. A new — and more diverse — fan base, however, began to emerge, including fans overseas. “On our last record, when [the song] ‘Gives You Hell’ was blowing up, we went to all these places in like Southeast Asia where we’ve never been before, and some of the best shows we’ve ever had in our career were there,” says Kennerty. “I couldn’t even pinpoint on a map where these places were before. There’s this audience for us there, and it’s a great feeling.” But the members of the Rejects are aware that their ability to expand the band’s fan base comes with the prospect of losing old fans. Kennerty acknowledges that each new album has its own identity, and it can sometimes have a negative impact. “We’ve come to expect that we’re going to have just as much backlash along with people who like it,” he says. “With each record being so different from the previous, we’ve always had this funny thing of alienating previous fans, while picking up a lot of new fans.” The Rejects fans range anywhere from frat boys tapping kegs, to 15-year-old girls running around at Warped Tour with plastic barrettes in their hair, to their parents who
drop them off at the concert. Over the past 12 years, the band has mastered the craft of creating a catchy song that’s accessible to almost anyone who listens to pop or rock. (Even soft-rock fans dig a single such as “Gives You Hell.”) So what’s the solution to get the old fanbase back? The members of All-American Rejects hope, according to Kennerty, that over the years they’ve grown enough as artists to produce an album that fans of different genres can relate to. Kennerty also believes that the Rejects have avoided making the mistake that most bands do with a new album — making the same record twice. “Stylistically, it’s a little all over the place, but at the same time we’ve somehow made this cohesive record where it’s an album from start to finish, as opposed to just the 11 newest songs we wrote, [and] I’m really proud of that,” says Kennerty. So, perhaps the Rejects’ old fans will recognize the hard work and dedication that was put into Kids in the Street and welcome the band back into their iTunes libraries. When asked what the band would tell the disconnected fan in relation to buying the new album, Kennerty addresses them with a sincere response.
been more experienced studio-wise going in than ever before.” The album is about starting from the ground up, and the Rejects reminisce about the simplicity of life before fame as well as the pre-Digital Age when real albums were made. “We grew up as rock kids, and rock was an album genre,” he says. “I feel like we’ve made an album that demands being listened to as an album. I think that’s how I would tell people who listened in the past to approach it. I think that’s what people want; people want albums again, not just singles.” When the All-American Rejects play at the Borgata on April 13, Kennerty insists that fans can expect to hear everything that they originally fell in love with about the band. “It will be a good mix of all of the records,” he says. “We’ll be playing a good amount of the new stuff, just because it’s new and its fun, [and] we’re really proud of it. We’ve been fans ourselves, and we’ve seen bands that think they’re too good to play the songs that everyone wants to hear, and we hate that. So you can definitely expect to hear all the ones you want to hear. We don’t want to cheat anybody. We still enjoy it. As long as people are reacting to it, we don’t get sick of playing them because it’s fun.” n

“I would say that it’s probably our best record,” he says. “It encompasses all that’s good about our old stuff, but [it’s] still a new thing. We recorded a lot of the record live, and embraced a rawness that we never had before, and just created a mood on the record.” Kids in the Street is a chronicle of Ritter’s realization that he needed to clean house, put down the bottle of Jameson and return to his roots. Along with the help of Wheeler, he wrote the lyrics for the album. Kennerty believes that he brought something equally as important to this record. “I feel like my biggest contribution to the band comes from when there’s a skeleton of a song that Tyson and Nick have worked on, and then I can kind of bring a [new] perspective when they’re already kind of immersed and losing it,” he says. “I really feel like I was able to help step myself up more by having
ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY • APRIL 12 - 18, 2012
Y THE TIME A ROCK BAND’S fourth studio album is released most of its fans have grown up and traded in their skinny jeans for “mom” jeans. It won’t, however, be uncommon for the young AllAmerican Rejects fan to hear the band’s new album Kids in the Street blaring out of the minivan next to them at the red light. In a recent phone interview with AllAmerican Rejects guitarist Mike Kennerty, he addresses the Rejects’ fans, the new album — released March 27 on Interscope — and the tour, which will be making a stop in Atlantic City at the Borgata on Friday, April 13. All of the band’s original members — consisting of Tyson Ritter (vocals/bass,) Nick Wheeler (lead guitarist,) Kennerty (guitarist,) and Chris Gaylor (drums) — have remained since starting up in their hometown of Stillwater, OK, in 2000. The band came out with its first (self-titled) album in 2002, a live journal backed by guitars and catchy chorus riffs with honest, simple and callow songs filled with angst and a disenfranchised attitude. It was that pissed-off attitude that the band’s original fans connected with. With each subsequent album, the band has shifted its style while maintaining the ability to generate catchy pop rock songs. By the time 2005’s Move Along, the Rejects’ second album, came out, the alternative rock scene had fully shifted into “emo” mode. (Which, in the end, became the ugly, highly commercialized scorned stepchild of punk rock.) The All-American Rejects toured with bands like Fall Out Boy and Hawthorne Heights, and subsequently got lumped into the “emo” genre. Following the release of Move Along, and prior to the Rejects’ third record, When the World Comes Down, the emo scene began its decline. This is when the Rejects’ music style could have died out. The band, however, was committed to making sure that its music wasn’t tied down to any specific genre. So what if they wore skinny jeans and tight shirts? They didn’t let it define them. “We’ve always laughed all that stuff off,” Kennerty tells AC Weekly. “For our second record, My Chemical Romance and Fall Out Boy were big, and then we were considered an ‘emo’ band. And so we were just like, ‘whatever happens; if we’re making music and there’s another band that’s doing something popular, someone’s going to pin us like [that].” Once emo became mainstream, some of the band’s original fans began to stray, claiming that the Rejects “sold out.” Some felt discon-

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy
Where: Golden Nugget, Atlantic City When: Saturday, April 14, 8pm How much: $34.95 and $44.95
The swing-revival band has a loyal following and is well known for its strong, passionate performances. By Ed Condran

HERE ARE FEW CITIES THAT CAN hold a candle to Los Angeles when it comes to trendy. While living in the City of Angels during the mid-1990s, it was impossible to miss the revival of swing. A number of bands dominated the clubs, but no act connected with the retro-loving trend chasers like Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. The cats in the zoot suits, who spouted the long gone lingo from generations ago packed the happening hipster club The Derby to get a chance to catch the emerging, entertaining act deliver its energetic show. “We had so much fun back in those days,” Big Bad Voodoo Daddy vocalist Scotty Morris tells Atlantic City Weekly. “It was incredible watching how much the crowds grew. They were so into what we were doing.” Music fans embraced the world of cocktails and old-school dancing. BBVD followers lined around the block and would wait for hours to see their favorite band. “We were blown away by all of that,” says Morris. “We appreciated the attention and all of the enthusiasm. Any band would love that.” But the swing revival faded and so did many of the bands that were supported by Gen Xers back in the ’90s. The Squirrel Nut Zippers, the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies and other bands peaked and disappeared. However, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy never took a powder. The free-wheeling theatrical act out of yesteryear went national after appearing in the hit film Swingers, which featured Vince Vaughan and nailed the period when the lounge scene was tops. They were also featured on the film’s soundtrack. “That helped us so much,” says Morris. “We got so much exposure. We just wanted

es, including a pair of Christmas discs. The albums are all well-produced and feature strong, passionate performances. However, the best way to experience Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, which also includes pianist Joshua Levy, bassist Dirk Shumaker, saxophonists Karl Hunter and Andy Rowley, trumpeter Glen Marhevka and drummer Kurt Sodergren, is live. The band’s performances are typically carefree, celebratory and unpredictable. The band also connects with the crowd, which is an increasingly lost art today. “We try to have fun when we go out
‘The thing about that music was that it was great then and it was great now. It doesn’t matter when it was written. It still sounds so good and it’s fun stuff to play.’ to run with that and see where it would take us.” The Los Angeles-based band, which sold more than three million albums during the ’90s, played during Super Bowl XXXIII with Gloria Estefan and Stevie Wonder. “That was an amazing experience,” says Morris. “Something that is so unforgettable.” Even though swing is no longer the popular thing, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, which will perform Saturday, April 14, at the Golden Nugget in Atlantic City, continues to tour and make consistently potent albums. The band is obviously inspired by swing icons, such as Cab Calloway, who they paid tribute to with their terrific 2009 release, How Big Can You Get: The Music Of Cab Calloway. “There’s no one who did it like Cab Calloway,” Morris says. “He was just one of the all-time greats and it was a blast to
record his songs.” BBVD jumps, jives and wails through many of Calloway’s hits. The album, which was recorded with the approval of the Calloway family, includes such nuggets as “Calloway Boogie,” “The Call of The Jitterbug” and of course, the enduring smash “Minnie The Moocher.” “The thing about that music was that it was great then and it was great now,” says Morris. “It doesn’t matter when it was written. It still sounds so good and it’s fun stuff to play.” Fans should tip their fedora to BBVD since it appears that it’s all about longevity for the retro band, which has gone back to its underground roots. The band has been around for 22 years, although nearly two decades of that period was when the act was not the flavor of the month. But fans know what to expect from BBVD. The group delivers consistently solid albums. The act has six strong studio releas-
there, which isn’t hard for us,” says Morris. “Performing is something we’ve always enjoyed a great deal. It’s a great part of what we do. It helps that the people, who come out are always into the music and what we do when we’re onstage.” It has helped that Big Bad Voodoo Daddy has added some new wrinkles to make it interesting and challenging for the band. Over recent years, the group has played with a number of American symphony orchestras. BBVD has taken the stage with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Atlanta Symphony and the San Francisco Symphony. “It’s something different and it’s all been fun,” Morris says. “It helps if you do something a little different than you usually do. But that’s not saying that we don’t love what we typically do. We’re absolutely fine going up there and playing like we have for all of these years with just us. It’s all a good time as long as we’re on a stage performing. It never gets old. It’s just as satisfying now for us as it ever was.” n

Clutch Keeps it Comin’ Independently Maryland rockers forge ahead on their own in an age when record labels are less important to its success. By Jeff Schwachter
O
VER THE PAST 20-PLUS YEARS,
the Maryland band Clutch has achieved what most bands only dream of accomplishing. Following years of bouncing around the recording industry, signed to a myriad of labels such as Atlantic, Columbia and Elektra during the band’s first decade, Clutch’s blend of hard rock, blues, humor, and out-there lyrics — think Metallica meets ZZ Top meets Jon Spencer Blues Explosion in a southern juke joint — has garnered the band a worldwide fan base. It has also been successful as an indie band, following years of dealing with the record industry. In 2012, Clutch is hotter than ever as its former “contemporaries” such as Korn and the like have pretty fallen out of view/favor. What makes it even better for Clutch is that, today, its members (bassist Dan Maines, drummer Jean-Paul Gaster, guitarist Tim Sult, and vocalist/guitarist Neil Fallon) not only release albums on their own label (Weathermaker Music), but they own the rights to their three electrifying ’00s albums, 2004’s Blast Tyrant, 2005’s Robot Hive/Exodus and 2007’s stellar From Beale Street to Oblivion, all originally released on the DRT label. Along with putting out new records every year or so and touring, the band has re-released each of the aforementioned DRT albums on limited edition vinyl (and CD) to much success. Clutch is currently on tour — with Hellyeah — in support of the recent (and final) release from the trilogy, Blast Tyrant, a double-album 180+ gram expanded edition featuring acoustic bonus tracks and six posters. The band’s spring tour just kicked off and hits the House of Blues in Atlantic City on Saturday, April 14. It also has a new album in the works, and a new song — “Pigtown Blues” — will be released as a vinyl picture disc on April 24, the band’s first new material since 2009’s Strange Cousins From the West. Clutch guitarist Tim Sult spoke to Atlantic City Weekly as the band was prepping to hit the road.
What kind of music were they doing at the time? It was more punk rock, straightforward hardcore type of stuff. They never played any shows or anything, and then I joined the band and played with them for a couple of years. We never played any shows; the first Clutch show didn’t happen until 1991. So, it was probably about two or three years of just kind of playing together in basements, just trying to figure things out before we actually played a show. Our first show was in Washington, DC. Over the course of the past 20 years and over a dozen records, what’s changed the most about Clutch? Well, for us, over the years we’ve become more independent, I think. At this point, we’re pretty much doing everything on our own. Whereas at the beginning, we were really young — we were in our early 20s and it was just really a different time in music, where bands depended a little bit more on labels and stuff like that. Over the years we were able to break free of that. Like us:

is also pretty heavy as well. Zeppelin too. Oh, yeah. There’s definitely a lot of Sabbath in us, for sure, especially in our older stuff. When is the last time you were on the road? We did a couple of weeks’ worth of shows with Thin Lizzy in the U.K. and that was in January — February? How was that? Oh, it was awesome. Those guys sound great. I mean, it’s really obviously only two guys from the classic Thin Lizzy, and only one dude that’s been there the whole time. But still, they sounded absolutely amazing, and I love their songs.
Clutch returns to the Boardwalk April 14 You guys signed with Atlantic first? Originally when we signed, I’m pretty sure our first album, like the very early ones, say Atco East West on the back of them. And then they just changed the name over to East West. And then after that, we ended up on Atlantic. It was basically just a different floor of the same building. We were kind of the opposite of a normal band. We were on major labels early, and then we went independent afterwards. Obviously there’s been a lot of turmoil in the music business over the past 10-20 years. What factored into the band’s decision to go out on your own? It really just made the most sense. We weren’t making any money at all, selling albums with the last label that we were on. We were supposed to have a 50/50 deal with them, and it just really wasn’t happening. We eventually got the rights back to the three DRT albums, so that was a real blessing for us. And that factored into you re-releasing Blast Tyrant this year? Absolutely. I think Blast Tyrant was the last of the three of the DRT albums we re-issued. The new single, “Pig Town Blues,” that’s a picture disc vinyl? Yup, yup. So that’s going to be exclusively a vinyl release? Yeah, that one will definitely be exclusively vinyl. But that’s one of the ones, we recorded those two songs actually, pretty much during the same time we did the acoustic stuff, for the Blast Tyrant re-issue. So it’s kind of in the same vein of those two songs. And when was that? It was recorded over the course of 2011. Are you guys leaning a little more towards an acoustic vibe with your sound? Well, no. As far as the new stuff goes, the new stuff is definitely very, I don’t know, I would probably say it’s our most aggressive stuff to date. As
far as a full collection of songs that we have so far, we’ve probably got about 10 songs for the next album, and then, yeah, it’s definitely not leaning towards the acoustic sound at all. Now that you have your own label, would you say you don’t have to deal with all the bullshit and can take your time with the records and choose the songs, and not worry about the first single or stuff like that? I wouldn’t necessarily say that was the case. I mean, with Clutch, we never really had much artistic pressure on us, even when we were on major labels. That’s how we ended up with our album The Elephant Riders; it’s definitely a very, very strange record. I don’t know why they let us put it out, but they did and that’s awesome. Are you already cutting tracks for the new album? No, we’re still writing right now. We’re probably going to start recording — actually, we got preproduction scheduled for late July. So July, August we’ll be recording. Maybe by the end of the year it will be released? I’m not sure what the release date is going to be at this point. Late this year, early next year. There’s definitely a real blues flavor in your music. And you had talked about the guys in 12th grade kind of leaning more towards straight punk stuff. What inspired that blues ingredient into the sound and style in songs? Well, I think that’s really always been there with Clutch, back even to our second album. There’s an acoustic bluesy song on our second album. That element has been in there for a long time. I would say most of the blues songs that we do are kind of half cover songs. Do you guys dig listening to old blues records? Sure, definitely. The other guys in the band definitely listen to way more blues than I do. But, it’s pretty much the most fun kind of music to play in my opinion. I also hear a lot of the first Black Sabbath record, you know, the self-titled Black Sabbath album, when there was definitely a lot of blues-based stuff on there, which
So what do you have planned for this stretch of shows, in terms of sets? Do you guys devise those beforehand, or do you have it mapped out? You guys have a lot of material to pick from. Yeah, we’ve definitely got a lot of material. But, as far as the set list goes, we just make them right before the show. And they change frequently? Yup, we change them up every night. This tour coming up we’re probably going to play as much of the new stuff as we can. The material that would be on the new record? Yes, that’s pretty much what we’re looking at — trying to work out the new songs. That should be cool for the fans. Your last album was in 2009, Strange Cousins — Was it 2009? That was a long time ago. One review said, “ideal background music for driving a semi-truck through a swamp.” All right, I can live with that. America’s recent wars have been in some of the band’s material over the years. I listened to the new Blast Tyrant today and couldn’t believe that “Worm Drink” was written eight years ago. “Worm Drink,” yeah, that would have been 2004. Yup, eight years ago. So, can you believe that things have gotten worse, and wars are still going on, the stubbornness in D.C. still holding Americans back, seven, eight years later? Yup, doesn’t surprise me at all. I’m not sure, to tell you the truth, exactly what that song is about. I’m sure it’s about several things at the same time. But yeah, there’s definitely some war stuff going on. I haven’t listened to that song in forever; we haven’t played it live for a long time. That might be a good one to bring back.
HEADLINERS
Looking back over Clutch’s 20 years, any regrets or would you change anything? No, no regrets at all. I mean we’ve been able to keep this thing going for so long, and still going strong. People are still coming to the shows. It seems that more people know about us than ever. At this point, we could have a show anywhere in the world and somebody will show up. n

How did Clutch start out? We started out playing together pretty much right after high school. We started out in Gaithersburg, Maryland. The other guys in the band started playing together when they were in 12th grade; I was already out of school by then. But I eventually started playing with them.
