ave you ever wondered what a $100 burger tastes like? Well, you’ll get your chance at three of Caesars Entertainment’s Atlantic City properties in May, also recognized as National Hamburger Month. The $100 burger, dubbed “The Carving Board Burger,” serves two-four people and includes 40 ounces of Kobe beef, layered with garlic, roasted prime rib topped with Reserve’s port wine braised short ribs, herbed Lardo toasted Italian focaccia, pickled tomatoes, gorgonzola dolce fonduta and a balsamic syrup. The gargantuan burger will be available May 1-31 at the Preview Bar at Bally’s. But that’s not all folks. At the cafes at Bally’s (6ix: A Bistro), Caesars (Café Roma) and the House of Blues at Showboat (Crossroads) other meaty creations ($15.99 each) will be available for this culinary occasion throughout the month, including the national award winning TD’s Best Burger (ground rib eye, American cheese, black pepper bacon and maple Bourbon sauce); The Hangover Burger ( char-broiled ground sirloin topped with fried egg, American cheese, tomato and home fried potatoes); the Pizzaiola Burger (mozzarella, Rajas and marinara sauce); the Grilled Pineapple & Feta Burger ( with Chardonnay Jelly); The Brisket & Short Rib Burger and the smokey (and a bit spicy) Moroccan Harissa Manchego Cheese Burger. The chefs at Caesars Entertainment’s restaurants have had a ball coming up with special burgers for the month, just as they had on certain national food holidays during the past couple months (including a special pancake week in March, where nine different types of outrageous but delicious pancakes were offered; a potato chip day and popcorn day earlier this year, and an April slate of food specials that has so far been linked to Peanut Butter & Jelly Day, National Pecan Day, and on April 26, National Pretzel Day. Lou DiMinio, director of restaurant operations for Bally’s, Showboat and Caesars, says he and his team have enjoyed creating creative menus for the national food holidays. Right now, he says, they are planning for summer specials. “As we discuss what’s coming up,” says DiMinio, we pull out holiday documents and we sit around and choose which ones we are going to jump all over.” As far as Hamburger Month goes, DiMinio says all the creations are unique, but that one in particular is his favorite. “I’m partial to the Hangover Burger,” he says. “But the national winner [the TD’s Best Burger] is by far the one we get the most feedback on for any burger we have ever had on a menu.” DiMinio says he allows his chefs and their teams to go nuts, turning them loose to “do what they can do. They came up with some really interesting burgers. It’s going to be a really good time.” For more information about the food offerings visit caesarsac.com.

Epic/Legacy has finally reisssued the highly influential and long out-of-print 1974 album Inspiration Information by psychedelic soul man Shuggie Otis. The April release also comes with a second disc featuring a previously unreleased collection of songs — Wings of Love — recorded by the son of R&B pioneer Johnny Otis between 1975-2000. The reissue of Inspiration features four bonus tracks and was restored with Shuggie personally supervising. Otis has come out of seclusion in recent years for rare appearances and a return to the stage, but he’s been considered a genius and a master guitarist by his peers for years. Not only has he played with folks such as Frank Zappa, Chico Hamilton, Ettta James and Mos Def, but many artists have sampled his music, including OutKast (“Ms. Jackson”), Beyoncé (“Gift from Virgo”) and Digable Planets (“For Corners”). The “Shuggie Otis Rite Tour” continues in North America through the end of April. He also has a date scheduled in Philly in August. — JS
Popovich Comedy Pet Theater at Stockton By Lori Hoffman

rained house cats? Seriously? Trained dogs are one thing, but Gregory Popovich’s Popovich Comedy Pet Theater features 15 cats, 10 dogs, some geese and a few humans doing acrobatic feats and classic clown antics in a family-oriented blend of comedy and juggling skills. This must see family show is coming to Richard Stockton College on Thursday, April 25, 7pm. Tickets are $35 orchestra, $20 mezzanine, $5 senior discount, $10 for children (with adult ticket). All of the feline and canine performers were strays rescued from animal shelters. Where the humans came from is unknown. Not only do the animals work with Popovich in individual stunts, but they work in teams, dogs and cats together, and if you get tired of the animal athletics, Popovich shows that he is well trained as well in the skills of juggling and balancing along with a few of his human pals. This long time Las Vegas show will be a treat for everyone in the family. For more info or to order tickets call 652-9000 or online at stockton.edu/pac.

Life in the Laugh Lane
Atlantic City casinos have long fostered the idea that laughter is the best medicine, and the best bang for the buck, all year long. By Ray Schweibert • feedback@acweekly.com
Y
ears ago Atlantic City was regarded as a sort of proving ground for entertainment genres like jazz music and live theater, with those garnering raves reviews in the resort town often getting their cracks on the bigger stages of New York City. Where stand-up comedy applies, NYC venues like the Gotham Comedy Club, Carolines on Broadway, Dangerfield’s and the Laugh Factory are still the standards by which stand-ups gauge their status on the rungs of the comedy ladder. But A.C. takes backstage to no one in terms of the top-shelf comedy talent it now brings in, and not just during the peak tourist season but all year long. Just peruse the pages of this publication (Wanda Sykes, George Lopez, Tim Allen, Seth Myers, Kevin James, Jerry Seinfeld and Jay Leno coming to Borgata; Kathleen Madigan, Ron White, Jeff Foxworthy and Don Rickles to the Taj; Dana Carvey, Kevin Nealon and Dennis Miller to the Trop) for proof of that. A.C. also has a couple of venues that have been, and continue to be, the lighted stages for those still on their way up the comedy ladder, both of which will be celebrating milestone birthdays this year. Bob Kephart’s Comedy Stop at the Tropicana turns 30 and is currently the longest-running entertainment venue in the resort, and the Borgata Comedy Club turns 10 in August. Like the Comedy Stop, the Borgata Comedy Club also hosts daily stand-up routines unless its showroom, the Music Box, is booked for headline acts. Lately Revel has gotten into the mainsteam comedy act, and if its initial couple of Thursday night shows at The Social are any indication, the weekly series is likely to be a third purveyor of wisecracks for a while. The series kicked off April 4 with headliner Alonzo Bodden (grand prize winner of the season three reality TV series Last Comic Standing), and last Thursday, April 11, veteran funnyman Nick DiPaolo cracked up a packed house at The Social. The series continues with Dan Soder (April 18) and Rachel Feinstein (April 25), and is booked all five Thursdays in May, each with two regional acts opening for a headliner (see schedule at acweekly.com). The history of the Borgata Comedy Club is as interesting as the man who created it, the late Ray Garvey. Throughout his 53 years Garvey was at times a heavyweight Golden Gloves semifinalist, a cop and PAL organizer, a nightclub owner in his hometown of Brooklyn, a garbage man, bouncer and part-time character actor with bit parts in 13 Woody Allen films, among others. Experiences like these, pared with a gregarious personality and sensational sense of humor, left him well connected, and he

The late Ray Garvey
A.C. takes backstage to no one in terms of the top-shelf comedy talent it brings in. was introduced to the Borgata’s original CEO, Larry Mullin, at the wedding of Jamie Lynn Sigler, who played Meadow Soprano in the long-running HBO hit The Sopranos (fellow Brooklynites Steve “Bobby Bacala” Schirippa, and Tony “Paulie Walnuts” Sirico, were Garvey’s close friends). Mullin and Garvey hit it off and, learning of his background in comedy, Mullin pitched the idea of starting a comedy club in Atlantic City. “I came down from Brooklyn a couple weeks later to put a proposal together, and it took off like a rocket ship to Mars,” Garvey told Atlantic City Weekly in 2007. Garvey, who lived by the adage “If you can’t laugh you ain’t living,” succumbed to a long battle with cancer on April 20, 2010, and the Borgata launched a special tribute to him in August of that year called “An Evening of Comedy.” Hosted by Schirripa — a talented stand-up comedian in his own right — and featuring about a dozen headline comics doing eight- to 10-minute sets, the event has been held every summer since, with proceeds benefiting NYC’s Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in Garvey’s honor. “The relationship Borgata fostered over the many years with Ray to help develop the long-running and successful Comedy Club each night was a testament to the hard work and effort Ray contributed,” said Borgata senior vice president of operations Joe Lupo just prior to the inaugural fundraiser. “He developed many friends over those years at Borgata, and we all miss him very much.” USA Today once named the Borgata Comedy Club one of the “10 Great Places To Sit Down and Watch Stand-Up” in the country ■ see more online @

Bob Kephart
“We sold out four shows and we never looked back.” Lewis Black and Drew Carey worked on their material and built their reputations. After 20 years in his original location, the Trop began building The Quarter in 2001, and Kephart wanted in. The casino carved out a spot in the expansion, and Kephart went into the hole for nearly $3 million to build a 300-seat club and added a full bar and a kitchen. “It was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down,” he recalls. “Basically, the little room, because it ran so effectively financially, allowed me to go to the next step and do the big room. I had a chance which very few people get ... to build a comedy club with proper sight lines, proper lighting, [and a] proper stage. It was probably one of the best times in my life.” Kephart relies on a stable of about 150 comedians who rotate in and out of the club on a regular basis. He adds about five new names a year, and he no longer accepts unsolicited DVDs for comedians looking to crack the lineup. Instead, the comedy impresario relies on his regular performers to make recommendations. “If anybody in my current stable wants to recommend somebody, I take that recommendation very seriously,” he explains. Next, Kephart will ask the newcomer to send him an Internet link where he can see the performer. “And if we like it up to that point, we invite them to Atlantic City to come and do a guest spot in front of the actual audience they’re going to be performing for,” he says. “That is really the key to getting into my room.” Kephart says the Comedy Stop “is one of the hardest rooms in the country” in which comedians will ever work, especially when it comes to the audience, which expects to see a quality show each night. “We’ve trained our customers to only accept good stuff,” he adds, “so you can’t just come in here and do a breezy set and expect to get by.” n

he moment Bob Kephart stepped into the small, non-descript room tucked away at the street level in the Tropicana, he wasn’t fooling around. He knew he was looking at the future of comedy in Atlantic City. Kephart didn’t see the piles of luggage strewn around the room waiting to be claimed by guests. In his mind’s eye, he saw a stage, a room filled with tables and chairs and a capacity crowd of 175 people laughing nonstop at a three-ring comedy circus. It was 1983, five years into the casino era, and A.C. was still feeling its way around the block as it established itself as the newest entertainment capitol on the East Coast. The Tropicana had been open for about two years, and it was looking for a way to turn some under-utilized space in its North Tower into a revenue producer. The luggage storage room was briefly known as the PHD-1 lounge, a distinction that had nothing to do with a degree of academic achievement and everything to do with the invasive Personal History Disclosure form potential casino employees had to complete when applying for a gaming license. Kephart, who had come to A.C. from Philadelphia in 1978 to run several non-casino nightclubs, decided the room was perfect for the first full-time casino comedy club. “So we started in December 1983, with just two nights, Friday and Saturday,” Kephart tells Atlantic City Weekly. “We sold out four shows and we never looked back.” Today, 30 years later, the Comedy Stop had grown and moved into more spacious quarters. Kephart remains at the helm of Atlantic City’s original laughing academy, having vanquished, on more than one occasion, pedigree names like Catch a Rising Star and An Evening at The Improv, both of which tried and failed to steal business and comedians away from his operation. Today, the Comedy Stop Café and Cabaret, located in the Trop’s retail, dining and entertainment annex known as The Quarter, is still the flagship of the city’s casino comedy scene. Borgata has a nightly comedy show in its Music Box, and Revel is experimenting with a midweek comedy show one-off in its venue know as The Social. Kephart said he’s fended off the competition by presenting a show in which all three comedians have the chops to be headliners. Audiences don’t have to fidget through an opener who’s just getting started, and a middle act who’s gaining experience. “I think the show should start the moment the curtain opens. You shouldn’t have to wait 40 minutes to be entertained.” During its early years, the Comedy Stop was the spot where up-and-comers like Tim Allen, Rosie O’Donnell, Ray Romano,

Jose Garces’ Distrito Cantina brings his Philly-based Guapos Tacos food truck concept to Revel By Frank Gabriel • feedback@acweekly.com

ne of the most glaring regional casualties of our economic recession endured during the last few years has been Atlantic City’s selection of latenight dining. While longtime local standouts like A.C. Bar and Grill, Ducktown Tavern and Tony’s Baltimore Grill still continue to serve up plentiful grub well through the wee hours of the morning, the casino industry has scaled back on its late-night offerings. We’ve taken notice of this personally during several overnights in the resort this past winter. In a locale that — to borrow the words of another Jersey-born Frank — literally “never sleeps,” it’s a bit of a disheartening phenomenon. Directly bucking that trend is the Revelbased, Jose Garces-conceived, Distrito Cantina. One of a trio of his eateries within the resort — others being the authentic, upscale Andulusian tapas bar Amada (225-9900; more on them later in this feature) and classic American tavern concept Village Whiskey (225-9880) — Garces’ Distrito Cantina is actually sort of hybrid, with counter space providing a lively margarita bar and victuals served up from within a customized, stationary food truck modeled after Garces’ highly-successful Philadelphiabased Guapos Tacos vehicle. The truck itself is wildly colorful, decorated with thousands of vintage soda caps. Its location, permanently posted up just steps from Ovation Hall, allows concert and event revelers easy access to world-class casual cuisine. The bar serves up more than 60 varieties of tequila — suddenly the trendiest of all distilled spirits — including a signature “Jefe” (or “Chef”) margarita featuring Don Julio resposado, Combier (the world’s first Triple Sec, conceived by Frenchman Jean-

Foods presented are classic Mexican street fare, elevated via Garces’ Iron Chef skill set — stuff like to-order guacamole with mashed avocado, jalapeno, cotija cheese and house-made tortilla chips; pozole, the traditional Latino family soup of corn hominy, made chic by the addition of little neck clams, chorizo and red chile; carnitas, pulled pork with black beans and pineapple salsa and esquites, a Northern Mexican specialty composed of toasted sweet corn blended with queso fresco and chipotle. The best part of Distrito Cantina’s concept
just might be its late-night accessibility. Currently open some Thursdays — when significant events are taking place within the resort — Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, the eatery operates until at least midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, often staying open till 2am. Once the summer season rolls forward, they anticipate serving food daily until midnight, later on the weekends. Garces’ mothership restaurant at Revel, Amada, has a major event of its own taking place this very week, on Thursday night, April 18. That evening, the chef will present a

multi-course repast celebrating the publication of his second cookbook, The Latin Road Home. Priced at $110 per person (inclusive of tax and gratiuity) guests can anticipate sampling items from each of the book’s five geographically-based chapters: Ecuador (Garces’ family background) Spain, Cuba, Mexico and Peru. The menu will include tiradito de lubina; black sea bass ceviche with yuzu (Peru); pan de yuca, yuca bread with queso fresco, served with guava-chile butter (Ecuador); crema de quinoa de zuleta, a quinoa chowder with sweet corn (Ecuador); enchilada de langosta, lobster in spicy tomato sauce (Cuba); carne asada a la Tampiquena con arroz rojo y refritos, grilled marinated skirt steak with red rice and refried beans (Mexico) and crema de Catalana, chocolate custard with vanilla berries (Spain.) The book itself chronicles the story of Garces life’s journey through food, beginning with those South American roots and detailing various steps along the path of his career. Guests at the event will also receive a copy of the book itself. Like most great cooks, Garces readily acknowledges the crucial role his grandmother and mother played in teaching him traditional Ecuadorian food preparation techniques during his youth. For those who haven’t visited Amada itself, the evening provides a great opportunity to sample some of Garces’ most revered family fare. The dining space at Amada — dramatically shaded in black and grey with orange Spanish tiles, fronting the Atlantic Ocean — is gorgeously lit by walls filled with hundreds of twinkling candles. It’s undeniably sexy, a great date-night choice, but also warm and welcoming. An absolutely fitting milieu for Garces’ extraordinary package of talents. n

EVENT INFO but the thrill of it is the performance. So you can’t really write it. You can write it as best as you can. You get it to the best place, but then you still don’t know until you perform it for people. So I find that I can write more easily [now], but I throw out more. So the net result is about the same. It’s still hard to come up with two minutes of good stuff that you’re happy to do. But I forgot some of the joy of it. You know when you have a new bit, or new idea, and you say something to a friend you go, “Oh, that’s funny, I cant wait to try it.” You can’t wait to get on stage that night and you look forward to it. It’s like a kid with a new toy; you can’t wait to break it out again.
Mad About Comedy
Paul Reiser wanted a new start. So he went back to where his career began: stand-up comedy. He performs at Borgata April 20. By Jeff Schwachter • feedback@acweekly.com
A
lthough comedian Paul Reiser grew up in New York, as a child his family never traveled down to Atlantic City. “We never did that,” he says. “We weren’t the Atlantic City goers. We would go down to the East River so you [wouldn’t] have to pack.” Reiser, 56, best known for his many film roles and his successful sitcom Mad About You (1992-99), in which he co-starred with Helen Hunt, started out as a stand-up comic in the Big Apple in the late 1970s/early ’80s, before landing a role in the film Diner, which led to several other film parts (Beverly Hills Cop, Aliens, The Marrying Man) and a heralded stand-up comedy career. Taking a break from stand-up for several years — penning three acclaimed books while working on other projects — Reiser decided about a year-and-a-half ago to get back to his roots and return to the stage. Now that he’s lived in California longer than he’s lived on the East Coast (“which is crazy,” he says), Reiser is excited about his Atlantic City date. “I’m looking forward to being in Atlantic City,” he says, “where Jay Leno said: the ocean is on the correct side.” Reiser’s current string of weekend stand-up shows brings him to the Borgata’s Music Box on Saturday, April 20. It will be his first time in roughly three decades performing stand-up in the casino resort. “I haven’t been in Atlantic City in years,” he says during a phone call from Los Angeles, where he lives with his wife and two children. “I was there 30 years ago opening for Melissa Manchester. I think I was there in the late ’80s at Caesars.” Below are excerpts from Reiser’s interview with Atlantic City Weekly. Among other topics, he talks about his return to stand-up, the
facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly
“The world has changed, but the art of standup is exactly the same. It’s so low tech. There’s nothing you can do that’s technological.” thrill of performing live and how audiences haven’t changed over the past 30 years. When did you start your current return to stand-up? I just started six months ago. About a year and a half ago I just went up from scratch. I always wanted to get back, but somehow I kept putting it off. I didn’t want to start doing the old act; I wanted a new start. One night I was hosting a charity event, which is not the same as really doing a show, but you are telling a few jokes. And it was such a good audience and I had such a good time. I got off stage and I thought, “What am I crazy? Why aren’t I doing this? This is fun!” So I just went down to the clubs out here in L.A. and I said, “Can I come down and do five, maybe 15 minutes worth [of stand-up]?” So for about a year I would come down unannounced and go on for a couple of minutes. Then after a while I said let’s try it. Why did you stop doing stand-up? I did a special in like 1990 or ’91 for HBO. Then Mad About You started and I kind of put stand-up on the back burner. I got busy with other stuff. There is a really nice feeling now at this point that when I go out [on stage] I figure someone is coming to see me; they know me. There is this feeling of getting together with old friends. I always felt it interesting to have these great friends that
I’ve known [for so long]. The truth is you can always go a year or 15 months without getting together because we live in different cities, but the minute you get together it’s right where you left off. I kind of feel like that with the audience. ... And you’re just picking up the conversation a little deeper down the road. We are all older and, you know, life changes. Fifty is not the same as being 20. Being married 20-something years is totally different than being newlyweds; it’s all different. So there is always something to talk about. Has your material evolved over the six months that you’ve been back out there? Yeah, it’s always a work in progress. It’s an illusive holy grail. You always want to get it right and you never do. It’s never quite clearcut. People ask me if comedy has changed and it really hasn’t. The world has changed, but the art of stand-up is exactly the same. It’s so low tech. There’s nothing you can do that’s technological. You can’t speed it up, you can’t accelerate the process. You just have to sit with the pencil and come up with a joke, go tell it many nights in a row and after enough nights it will get better. What was it like preparing for your return to stand-up? It’s an interesting observation because I think after all the writing I know how to edit better. So, on one hand, you want to edit it,
So things like that can come up during the tour? Oh yeah. You’re always writing new stuff and there’s always something you’re looking forward to. What can people expect at the Borgata show? I seem to be drawn to the same interests — relationships and marriage and kids and getting older. There’s a vantage point that you have from your 50s where you can see your 20s and you can unfortunately see your 80s. So you see which way it’s going. My stand-up is where I started and my new thoughts came out of that. [With] the books, [the] shows, and now stand-up again, its always been the same line. If anybody knows me from the books or from Mad About You, nobody’s going to come away and say, “Wow, that’s not what I expected at all.” Hopefully it’s like, “Oh yeah, that’s exactly what I thought it would be.” It’s surprising to me the people who know the show and say, “Oh, I never knew you did stand-up.” Getting on the stage at the charity event, did you immediately feel comfortable back on the mike? I’ve done that over the years. Every once in a while I get on the stage and host a thing and that was the extent of my performing. It was just [that night I was] particularly on. Suddenly that fire of being funny on stage I forgot. It’s different than being funny on TV. The other thing that’s great about stand-up is that it’s just immediate. You say something and they laugh. You don’t have to sell it, you don’t have to have a meeting about it, you don’t need 12 more to put them in a cast, you don’t have focus groups — you just tell the joke. When it’s going well you get funnier because they’re enjoying you more. Obviously it’s tough if they’re not enjoying it, but yeah it was just something I had forgotten — about the thrill of performing. I have been traveling more now than I even did when I started out. I’m going out every weekend. And I’m all over the country and it’s been really interesting to see that it’s not that different. There’s really not a difference to me in the audiences from Lexington to Houston to Tulsa to Seattle to Florida. I’m like, “I’m not changing my act.” I don’t have 20 minutes of southern jokes or northwest jokes. People are the same pretty much wherever you go. ■ see more online @

EVENT INFO that were ahead of me — Lewis Black, Ron White, Roseanne ... she was already famous on TV and I watched her from afar. Lew and Ron were in the clubs. I like people with a strong point of view. There are plenty of good comedians out there but frankly, they are kind of forgettable. They get the job done but when you leave, is there one thing I can tell you they said? Probably not, but Maria Bamford or Judy Gold or Lewis Black, I can tell you all kinds of things they said because it was memorable to me. Some female comics do female-centric material but you don’t. Was that a conscious choice or did it just evolve? It wasn’t a conscious choice. I talk about the things that interest me, period. The topic of men and women and I’m a woman so here is my side, I think it has been so overdone, it’s time to move on. I feel that way about any minority comic. You should move to the next level [beyond the stereotypes]. Isn’t there something new to say?
Accidental Comic
Kathleen Madigan never planned a life in comedy but loves the road, performing for our troops and casino gigs like this Saturday at the Taj. By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com

APRIL 18 - 24, 2013 • ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY
L
ike many comedians, Kathleen Madigan is a road warrior. As she has noted in the past about playing 300 nights on the road, “We don’t get time off like a band. Our tours never end.” Her 25 years on the road have included several tours of duty entertaining the troops overseas with Ron White, comedy specials, such as her 2011 special Gone Madigan on Showtime and CMT, and other shows on HBO and Comedy Central. She’s been a regular on the talk-show circuit from Leno to Letterman and treasures the freedom her lifestyle affords her, which is one reason she is wary of settling down doing a TV show. A regular headliner in Atlantic City the past few years, Madigan chatted with AC Weekly via phone at the un-Hollywood-like hour of 6:45am Pacific time. You have been playing Atlantic City pretty regularly. How are the audiences here? I think people who like my act are gamblers and drinkers anyway. If that’s your idea of fun, which it is mine — drinking and gambling and laughing, not that one should brag about that I guess. A casino is just like a little slice of heaven to me. I hope heaven is a casino and I hope I have unlimited hours at the dollar video poker machine. You’ve performed for the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. What was that like? Were you scared? I wasn’t scared until one time in Kabul
facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly
“I hope heaven is a casino and I hope I have unlimited hours at the dollar video poker machine.” [Afghanistan] the base got mortared while I was onstage. Sirens are going off and I’m saying, “Where are we going to go?” We’re in a tent with a fake stage. You’d have to run to another building and is that safe? A lot of thoughts go through your head and the soldiers are saying, “Oh, just ignore it, it happens all the time.” So I did. They truly are the best crowds on earth because they are so excited that someone showed up. If you’re in Atlantic City there is plenty to do. If you’re in Kabul, you don’t have any choices. When we show up to do a show they are extra, extra, extra appreciative of the effort. How did you get started in stand-up and what was that one moment when you realized you could make people laugh and do this for a living? I didn’t have a moment like that, or if I did I wasn’t paying attention. There was a club near the bar that I worked that had an open mike night. My friends and I just did it for fun then I kept doing it and I thought maybe I can make money doing this. It was sort of an accident; it wasn’t like I had a game plan. I’ve never had a plan, really. I
still don’t. So far, it’s been fine without one. I think plans are overrated, but if you say that you sound like a lazy jackass. How can you plan when you have a job that changes every five seconds? It’s chaos, which I like. Being a comic is a tough job. Has 25 years on the road taken its toll? I still like the road. I mean the actual act of flying sucks. It’s completely ludicrous. Now we can bring knives on again but not my shampoo? Who’s making these rules? I can really get my Irish up when it’s stuff that is so nonsensical. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone through [airport security] with a mini bottle of hairspray and a lighter. You know what I could do with hairspray and a lighter? I do, because I did it when I was 13 with my brothers. Wow. Blowtorch! That part sucks, but I like going to different towns. I still think it’s a great job. You said you got into the business by accident, but are their comedians that have influenced you? Once I got into it, I really liked the ones
What is your process for working on new material? I don’t have a process. I just live. I get up and do what I’m supposed to do. I do watch a lot of news, but I would do that anyway. I watch a lot of sports and I hang out with my family and friends and stuff just happens. I don’t sit down and write jokes. I’ll see something and think something and then I write it on a bar napkin in my purse — and I have an abundant amount of bar napkins. You play golf. How is your game these days? Terrible because I’ve been in nothing but cold places. Playing is easier when you’re an opening act or a middle act and you drive to gigs. Once you are taking planes it’s just another bag you have to take with you. It makes me look forward to retirement. I can have a dog and golf. Your bio says you’re not interested in doing a sitcom or acting, but wouldn’t it be nice to have a steady gig and stay home? The whole idea of a steady thing literally sends me into a panic. I went to ABC about a year and a half ago. They invited me so I agreed to go over and talk to them. About 10 minutes into the meeting, they are pitching a show that sounds like The View with another twist and this woman says, “Every day we could do something.” And I say, “Every day?” And she says, “yes.” So I said, “Honestly, I’m not going to waste any more of your time. I can give you a list of people that would want this job, but I am not your lady.” There is no price for freedom to me ... well, there is a price but so far no one is willing to pay it. ■ see more online @

Summer Laughs Since this issue of Atlantic City Weekly is devoted to comedy (did you notice?) here are a few quick picks for comedy movies coming out this summer. The Hangover Part III — The finale will hopefully make us forget the mediocre middle movie in the series. (May 24) The Internship — Wedding Crashers co-stars Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson reunite as out-of-work friends who decide to take on the highly competitive world of Google internships. (June 7) This Is The End — Seth Rogen (who cowrote and co-directs), James Franco, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson and Jay Baruchel play themselves (but as bigger assholes) in this comedy about the impending end of the world. (June 12) The Heat — Gender bending cop comedy in which Sandra Bullock (the uptight FBI agent) and Melissa McCarthy (the Boston street cop) take roles usually assigned to men. (June 28) n

was for white players only. And, while one might argue that Robinson is portrayed as a little too flawless, that is the nature of most screen biographies. This film reminds us that how we feel about our sports figures mirrors how we feel about our nation. In this post-war era change was needed and Robinson delivered that change by being both a great ballplayer and a great man.

ven the most casual of baseball fans is aware of Jack Roosevelt Robinson, the first African American to play in Major League Baseball in the modern era. His courage as he faced the most infective racism daily is the central theme in 42, a bythe-book movie biography that leans toward the uplifting aspect of this ugly period in history. Trailblazer that he was, Robinson would not have stayed in baseball if he didn’t belong there on merit. Covering a two year period that included his minor league career and his first year in the National League as the Brooklyn Dodgers first baseman, Robinson (36-yearold newcomer Chadwick Boseman) is told by Brooklyn GM Branch Rickey (Harrison Ford as a grumpy old man with a soft side) that is looking for someone who has the guts not to fight back when faced with racial taunts. Robinson’s abilities and his courage made his less enthusiastic teammates change their minds — and the ones that didn’t got traded to the baseball equivalent of Siberia, Pittsburgh. Boseman is fabulous at conveying the rage he kept in check and thankfully he looks like a ballplayer, and Ford has a blast as the man who decided to blow up the gentleman’s agreement that baseball
