Who Let the Dogs Out — Easter weekend got off to a fashionable start Saturday, April 19, with the annual Woofin’ Paws Pet Parade and Fashion Show at Carey Stadium in Ocean City. It was a beautiful sunny day and the dogs were on their best behavior, although the puggle (top left) kept trying to shake off his top hat. Categories included best bonnet, best dressed, best pet and human look-alike, intelligent pet tricks, best swimsuit and best superhero. Don’t tug on superdog’s cape. The $5 entrance fees raised money for the Humane Society of Ocean City, a no-kill shelter. Photos by Donald Kravitz.

N
ow that he’s relinquished The Tonight Show to Jimmy Fallon, don’t be surprised if Jay Leno makes a move to a cable network. But also don’t be surprised if his next show doesn’t have a comedy monologue based on current events, or interviews with movie stars plugging their new motion picture. Musing out loud to 60 Minutes correspondent Steve Kroft just two weeks before leaving The Tonight Show, Leno said he could see himself doing something with, say, The History Channel. And in a follow-up email exchange with The Boston Globe, the comedian and passionate automobile buff — his collection of classic cars is said to be worth about $50 million — hinted he might expand his Jay Leno’s Garage Web shows into something more substantial. But he ruled out jumping back into the late-night talk show wars. “Will I do another late night show to go against [Fallon, David Letterman or Jimmy Kimmel]? No. …You can’t recreate what we had at The Tonight Show. That was a 22-year moment in time,” he told 60 Minutes. “It was fantastic. And I loved it.” After a two-decade run as Johnny Carson’s successor, Leno didn’t even take a day off to reflect in the personal satisfaction of a job well done. The night after signing off The Tonight Show, Leno did what he’s been doing for more than 40 years, ever since the days when he went on the road with two strippers who strapped their prop — a giant champagne glass — to the top of their Volkswagen: Leno did a comedy gig, only this time he flew to the one-night-stand in Florida on NBC’s corporate jet. Back on the road this weekend, Leno returns to Atlantic City to play a one-night stand Friday, April 25, at Caesars Circus Maximus Theater. On two occasions separated by about 20 years, Leno told me he always considered himself a comedian first and a TV performer second. Without comedy, he said, he’d have never earned his spot as Carson’s replacement. Leno is no stranger to Atlantic City. His first appearance here was during the summer of 1979, when the new casino on the block was owned by the same people who owned Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. At first, they didn’t use the Caesars name locally; the property was known as the Boardwalk Regency, and it had just broken Resorts’ yearlong monopoly as the only game in town. Leno, with a couple of
Tonight Show appearances under his belt, was opening for the musical duo Seals & Crofts, whose hit singles included songs like “Summer Breeze” and “Diamond Girl.” They were performing in the “bowling alley,” which is what we called the narrow, low-ceilinged, 466-seat Cabaret Theater at the casino. I reviewed the show and gave Leno a far better grade than Seals & Crofts, mainly because it took them 45 minutes to finally begin singing, thereby wasting Leno’s killerfunny 30-minute opening set. Leno and I were introduced after the show, and he said he wanted to take a walk on the Boardwalk and grab a hot dog. We ended up at the now-defunct Dipstix, where I introduced him to the artery-clogging joys of a corn batter dipped-and-fried hot dog on a stick. What’s remarkable about Leno, especially compared to other comedians who started out as opening acts and then found huge success on television (hello, Jerry Seinfeld and Garry Shandling), is how little Leno has changed over the past 30 years. He’s still the same unassuming guy he was when I met him in 1979: still loves putting on the jeans and denim shirts after the shows; still would rather have a hot dog instead of a filet mignon; still loves his cars. The only difference is that instead of dreaming about owning a one-of-a-kind car, he can buy as many as he wants. One of the most fascinating things he told me — other than the fact that he doesn’t have a manager or an agent — was about five years ago, when we were taping a TV show at Harrah’s Resort. Leno told me he banked every paycheck he received from NBC. Every single penny. He didn’t have a stock portfolio, didn’t invest his money in real estate, didn’t buy bonds. Cash. In the bank. Didn’t even have a mortgage on the modest home where he and Mavis, his wife of 33 years, live, because he refused to buy a house until he could pay cash for it. Said it was something his father taught him as a kid: Don’t buy something unless you have the money to pay for it. Leno, who’ll turn 64 on April 28, lived off the money he made doing stand-up. During the 22 years he hosted the top-rated late night show, he commanded top dollar for his live gigs, especially when he played casinos. “So when I leave The Tonight Show, I should have a pretty nice little nest egg built up,” Leno said very matter-of-factly. His net worth is estimated at between $350-$400 million. That’s some nest egg. ■

D Austin’s life revolves around his throat — both as a professional chef and as the the frontman of his own blues band. So when esophageal cancer threatened to not only stop him from doing what he loved best, but maybe even end his life, he poured the same sort of passion he had for living into fighting the dreaded disease. Today, the score is Austin one, cancer none. “I’ve had two clean scans — the cancer’s been eliminated, now it’s just a matter of getting my strength back,” says Austin, who underwent six weeks of chemo treatments and a 12-hour operation at Philly’s Jefferson Hospital since being diagnosed in December. Back on the path to good health, Austin’s immediate mission is to help thank the Jefferson staff — particularly oncologists Dr. Nancy Lewis and Dr. Ernest Rosado — for their exceptional care, and to get his own finances back in order. Co-pays, a lengthy hospital stay and medical leave from work made things tough for his family financially, including his wife Tracey and their 10-year-old son David. The Tropicana jumped on board and brought along numerous property affiliates to help host the inaugural Don’t Back Down to Cancer benefit. The gala takes place Sunday, 5-9pm, at the Trop’s unrivaled retro nightclub Boogie Nights. “We’re putting a benefit together for the Family Medical Fund [dont-back-down-tocancer.ticketleap.com] and I also wanted to give back to Jefferson in some respect, so $10 from every ticket from this event goes to the Jefferson Foundation [connect.jefferson. edu],” says Austin. “They’re amazing people at Jefferson — extremely well organized. There’s tons going on at once and a lot of communication needed from office to office and case to case, and it’s incredible how well they coordinate those things. “It made me appreciate what they do, and being an advocate for the cure has become an important thing for me. Giving people a heads-up to what they’re in for if they find themselves dealing with a similar situation;raising awareness that acid reflux is a primary cause of this type of cancer;stressing the importance of having a routine endoscopy done — these are things I want to help others understand.” The event intersperses live music into a cooking presentation that shows how to prepare the finished dishes at several culinary stations. Marvelous
Ms. Madigan ‘So what if I thought Jon Bon Jovi was dead? He’s not.’ By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com
K
athleen Madigan makes people laugh 300 dates a year — an insanely busy schedule. Chatting this week with Atlantic City Weekly,, Madigan revealed a treasured Lewis Black story, her favorite current news event and just how much she misses Jay Leno. You had a new streaming special on Netflix added in September, Kathleen Madigan Again.. Is streaming the next big market for comedy? It’s a million times better for us. When I did a special for HBO or Showtime, they would tell me the premiere date, then [couldn’t tell me when else it would be on or how many times]. My mom would call and tell me it was on, but I don’t think my mom should be in charge of that. With Netflix, I can say it’s always on. Promotion for everybody these days involves social media. How much are you into that side of the business? I love Twitter, because it limits everybody to 140 characters and you don’t have to decide if you’re my “friend.” With Twitter I’m really involved. I love it and people are funny. Lewis Black argues with me saying, “But it’s not verified.” “I don’t care, Lew. So what if I thought Jon Bon Jovi was dead for a day. He’s not dead. So now it’s good news.” Do you have a favorite Lewis Black story? We were in Afghanistan, and you have to wear the flak jacket all the time and the helmet. It is so heavy. He puts it on and his glasses are always dirty; he always looks semi-homeless. I tell him, “You look like an adult with special needs.” He goes, “This is why I come here to encourage people and keep the troops happy: They fight for people like me who are completely incapable of doing this.” “Lewis, if we had a whole army of you and me, we would win every war. If we came over a mountaintop they would just start laughing and then we could kill them.” You’ve done The Tonight Show 25 times. Do you miss Jay Leno? I do. I got real sad the last time I did [the show with him], and I went to the final taping. I worked with Jay a million times just in clubs. He’s a great guy, like an older
brother who never gets emotionally involved with things. It’s just business. He got so emotional during that last taping, and I was very sad — it was like watching a cat cry. I do miss him. It felt like home appearing with him. Has there been anything in the news lately that caught your attention as good comedy material? I’ve really talked a lot about the Malaysian airplane. My entire life I assumed that when all of us got on a plane that was going over water, that somebody smarter than us on land knew where we were at all times. And guess what? They don’t. They [warn you] about fires, water landings, mountain crashes, but they never say, “In the event that we go missing . . .” ■

APRIL 24 - MAY 1, 2014 • ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY
By Ed Condran • feedback@acweekly.com
I
t was as though the ’80s had never ended — baroque tunes, outrageous costumes, acrobatic dancers and plumes of smoke filling Philadelphia’s Mann Center one gloriously over-the-top evening last September, as fans of the candy-colored decade danced happily to the band that, with apologies to New Order and Depeche Mode, was arguably the UK’s best single dance-pop act of the generation: The Pet Shop Boys. Their show — which comes to Revel’s Ovation Hall on Friday — is huge, ornate and at times spectacular. In contrast, vocalist Neil Tennant describes it with pure English understatement: “We try to have fun with a big production,” he says. “We try to complement the songs with some good visuals.” It’s a smart approach. When you get right down to it, the Pet Shop Boys — Tennant and his partner in sonic crime, keyboard-
facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly
ist Chris Lowe — are basically two guys in their late 50s with a synthesizer. So playing up the visual experience goes a long way in energizing such familiar hits as “West End Girls,” “Rent” and “Domino Dancing.” “We know the fans want to hear those hits,” Tennant says, “and we comply. We enjoy playing those old songs.” There’s also a batch of great new songs from their 2013 album, Electric, which didn’t get the critical attention it deserved. But then, that’s the way of things: The Pet Shop Boys have been ahead of their time for years. And what strikes people is just how well their songs continue to hold up a generation after they were penned. One big reason: Tennant’s whimsical lyrics can always be counted on to turn a frown to a smile. Is there a funnier ’80s pop song not written by the Smiths than “Opportunities (Let’s Make Lots of Money?)”
“I’ve always enjoyed writing humorous lyrics — or enjoyed trying to write them,” Tennant says. “It’s not easy.” It’s not surprising that the Pet Shop Boys have influenced any number of significant recording artists. Chris Martin of Coldplay and Brandon Flowers of the Killers have each noted the impact the group had on them in their formative days. “There really was no (act) like them when they formed,” Flowers says. “I’m a big fan.” Perhaps a more surprising fan: Axl Rose, who admitted that Guns N’ Roses took a page out of the Pet Shop Boys playbook when making the lush “November Rain.” After selling 50 million albums and garnering six Grammy nominations, Tennant says, “We’re proud of what we’ve been able to achieve. It’s been beyond what I thought was possible.” Not bad for a former music journalist,
either: Before hitting it big, Tennant was a scribe for Smash Hits magazine in the early ’80s. “We were all so obsessed with pop music,” he recalls. “It was a great time for music: People didn’t follow trends. The music that was created and the fashion that was created was weird. People made their own music—and they made their own clothes.” Fellow ’80s pop icon Adam Ant agrees. “Some people don’t remember how creative the ’80s were,” Ant says. “I did my own thing, and so did so many different bands. You look at the Pet Shop Boys — nobody was like the Pet Shop Boys. That’s still true.” Indeed. In today’s producer-centric era in which trends are chased and live performers are typically on the milquetoast side, the Pet Shop Boys remain refreshingly original: Each new album moves in a different direction, and their shows are as exuberantly colorful as the songs. ■ see more online @

Caesars’ Palace Court isn’t any typical casino all-you-can-eat — it’s got panache. By Frank Gabriel• feedback@acweekly.com

n the interest of complete disclosure, we have a confession to start this week’s column. I’m really not a buffet kind of guy. While no one appreciates the concept of food in mass quantities better than I, most buffets I’ve encountered have meant four things: lengthy, serpentine lines; mediocre steam-table offerings; poor service; and a dismal atmosphere. Good news, then: Caesar’s Palace Court, which opened in November, doesn’t just dispel those preconceived notions — it shatters them. That starts with the ambience. Walking into the 500-plus-seat facility on Good Friday, we were immediately struck by the wide, bright and lively space; with vivid hues of orange and soft yellow, the Palace Court’s decor is inviting and spacious. From a conceptual point of view, the room is thoughtfully designed to avoid having long queues of hungry patrons stuck waiting for food. In fact, it’s rather more like a series of separate buffets — each channeling a particular identity and style of cuisine. As a result, despite massive size, the Palace Court comes across as almost intimate and possesses a fine, uninterrupted flow, making this a new sort of dining paradigm: a boutique buffet. We began our meal at the seafood and sushi station. Here patrons encounter raw oysters and clams on the half shell, cool little shore-inspired mini buckets of steamed clams or mussels, fried shrimp, u-peel steamed shrimp, fabulous tuna salad, whole fillets of roasted salmon and much more. To the far left, chefs prepped a trio of different sushi rolls; spicy tuna, vegetable and a visually striking square-shaped fish cake. We especially enjoyed the evident freshness. This was all a la minute cuisine,
being accomplished throughout the evening’s service. Our next stop was a casual section serving wings, sliders and pizza. The chicken was juicy and plump, clearly cut from whole birds, doused with an above-average version of New York State’s legendary sauce and finished with a good aromatic toss of crumbled bleu. The sliders were one of the evening’s few disappoints, as the burger was a little too long under a heat lamp and needful of a softer, less crusty roll. Individual cuts of flat iron steak, wisely portioned at about six
ounces each, suffered no such issues. These lovely little cuts of tender beef were seared to an appealing medium-rare and presented atop a warm grill for added authenticity. Although we didn’t sample the pizza, our dining partner, an inveterate pie-eater, found hers to be better than most local products. She also relished several items from the Asian/Mediterranean station, most notable a beef, pepper, pineapple stirfry, spicy shrimp salad and fusilli pasta in red clam sauce. Worth noting is how well attended cus-

tomers are by servers at Palace Court. In addition to acquainting us with the various entities involved, ours provided beverages — with backups since the room was quite busy, a nice touch — dutifully cleared plates, replaced silver and detailed their unique, self-serve wine bar available for a small, additional fee. Now, let’s get back to the food, shall we? Next up on our agenda was a carving station with cut-to-order roast beef, whole breasts of turkey and gargantuan rounds of smoked sausage. The golden-brown poultry really stood out as succulent and moist, and rotisserie ovens just behind the line constantly churning out more of everything. Fans of vegetables need not despair; various salads are included at each different service outlet. And then there is a simply amazing array of desserts. Directed by talented Caesars executive pastry chef Deb Pellegrino, this collection looks more like a movie set or museum piece than any other buffet we’ve seen. It’s also strategically placed smack dab in the middle of the arching room, a glass rear wall showcasing glimpses of midtown A.C. From this dazzling display we sampled mini crème brulee, chocolate hazelnut cake and chocolate espresso bars. The latter, looking like an uptown take on a Kit Kat bar, delivered mouth-tingling doses of cacao and equally intense coffee essences. Our partner went for marvelous, ethereal, coconut-custard apple crumb cake and another loaded with multiple layers of chocolate. She also couldn’t resist their soft-serve ice cream and frozen yogurt bar, accented by a colorful selection of add-ins to create one-of-a-kind sundaes. In a town where casual-upscale dining has become the new norm, the Palace Buffet more than exceeds expectations. ■

Sci-fi Stew
Transcendence borrows from many sources, but fails to find its own voice. By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com

Castor, the foremost expert on the development of Artificial Intelligence, a sentient machine that feels human emotions and understands how to learn and grow. When he lectures about his obsession, he hypothesizes that a computer can eventually be designed to offer more knowledge than the entire history of the human race — and he announces it like his audience should be thrilled at the prospect of what he calls transcendence. It’s no wonder that a group of anti-technology terrorists (who dress like the wacko terrorists from 12 Monkeys) are trying to stop him. When the group succeeds in shooting Will it is with a radiation-laced bullet that will kill him in a few weeks. This sends his scientific partner and wife Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) into an emotional tailspin. Another scientist friend, Max (Paul Bettany) tries to help her move on but she comes up with the grief-stricken idea of putting her husband’s brainwaves into their

the human element doesn’t add up to the computer bytes.
Bears
Bears is the latest Earth Day release from Disneynature, following Earth, Oceans, African Cats and Chimpanzee. If you’re a nature movie fan you will certainly enjoy seeing the incredible cinematography of these magnificent creatures in the wild as captured by directors Alastair Fothergill and Keith Scholey. Former narrators of the films have included Pierce Brosnan, Patrick Stewart and Samuel L. Jackson. For this outing they went the folksy route with John C. Reilly, perhaps because bears, even their cubs, are not as adorable as baby chimpanzees or cheetah cubs. I suspect Monkey Kingdom, next year’s chapter in the series, will be more engaging. n

ovies steal from other movies. It’s the nature of the art form, taking ideas developed from a previous piece of celluloid and adding a different slant. Genre films are particularly guilty of this technique, from action pictures and science fiction to romantic comedies and raunchy teenage coming-of-age flicks. If the thievery creates a more engaging take on a theme, all is forgiven. Alien, for example, was essentially a 1950s style monster movie blasted into outer space. Johnny Depp, whose film career has been the ultimate rollercoaster ride (mostly down when he isn’t wearing a pirate hat), stars in Transcendence, a movie that borrows ideas from so many sci-fi sources it ultimately turns into a messy cinematic stew that fails to deliver its own unique flavor. Featuring the directorial debut of cinematographer Wally Pfister (The Dark Knight Rises, Inception), Depp stars as scientist Will
A.I. prototype computer, and he decides to help her. Before long Will is the ghost in the machine, craving more and more power and building his own army of enhanced human beings to carry out what his machine-fueled mind perceives as the necessary and benign takeover of the planet. While it sounds intriguing, the manifestation of this theme on screen comes off lackluster and becomes a parlor game of “How many previous sci-fi references are there?” There’s A.I., Source Code, the Data-centric episodes of Star Trek Next Generation, I, Robot, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Frankenstein, Her, the current TV series Revolution and The Forbin Project just off the top of my head. While Pfister’s visuals are engaging, the screenplay by Jack Paglen is a cobbled together mess as noted. As for the acting, since Depp is mostly seen as a talking head, he isn’t exactly riveting. Hall and Bettany, limited by the material do strive to bring some emotion into the story and manage to succeed occasionally. Also on hand in a minor supporting role is Morgan Freeman, who is lucky his screen time is limited. Transcendence is the type of movie that will turn up in my Netflix streaming cue in six months with the suggestion that I will like it based on the titles and actors I’ve previously liked. Sorry, Netflix, sometimes
