he was LOL funny, Pinette’s career took off. He made regular appearances on The Tonight Show, which helped him land one of the plum gigs at the time for stand-up comedians: opening for Frank Sinatra. Warming up a crowd for Ol’ Blue Eyes and, later, for singers Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme, brought Pinette to Atlantic City on a regular basis in the early 1990s. Then comedian Howie Mandel became a Pinette fan and began featuring him during his comedy tour. Pinette quickly caught on to the differences between a Mandel audience and folks who came out to see Sinatra or Steve and Eydie. “You learn to leave some [profane] words out,” Pinette said. An impressionist with a talent for mimicking offbeat characters like the Munchkins from The Wizard of Oz and The Chipmunks (Alvin, Theodore and Simon), Pinette became a regular on television with comedy specials and sitcom appearances. Last year, he hosted the cable series All You Can Eat. But perhaps his biggest TV gig was also his shortest: a 30-second scene where his character was carjacked during the series finale of Seinfeld. Pinette was working with Mandel when we shot the TV show at the Sands. That Pinette had a food addiction became apparent the night before during dinner with Mandel and his crew in one of the casino’s gourmet dining room. Pinette started out with a huge bowl of blackbean soup with a huge dollop of sour cream. That was the healthy part. For an appetizer, he ordered a petite filet mignon stuffed with blue cheese and pan fried in butter. His entrée was a trencherman-sized hunk of prime rib, which Pinette picked up by the bone end and pretended was a microphone while delivering spontaneous comedy lines and emphasizing the punchlines by taking caveman bites out of the meat. As the tape was rolling in the food court the next afternoon, Pinette ordered two hot dogs and cheese fries and warmed up for that by first consuming several battered-dipped hot dogs on a stick. As we followed him from stall to stall, Pinette proved he was fearless when it came to approaching strangers. He spotted two guys sitting at a table, sat down with them and began helping himself to their ice cream sundaes. Then he spotted a sign announcing the Sands was building a new buffet. He began petting the sign and whispering to it in hushed tones. “Coming soon,” he mused. “That’s okay. I’ll wait.” ■

ore than 20 years ago, as his career and his weight were both ballooning, John Pinette said he wasn’t afraid that dieting would make him a less funny comedian. Pinette, whose act was heavily weighted with self-deprecating material about his girth and his love of food, said he’d simply switch the focus from being fat to losing weight. It came as a shock — but probably not a surprise — when Pinette died in a Pittsburgh hotel room earlier this month less than three weeks after turning 50. Although there was no autopsy, a medical examiner said Pinette was suffering from liver and heart disease and his personal physician signed off on the cause of death as a pulmonary embolism. Ironically, Pinette had shed almost 200 of his 400 pounds through an aggressive weight loss regimen, according to Larry Schapiro, who managed Pinette for the past 24 years. Last year, he interrupted a comedy tour to undergo treatment for a prescription drug addiction. “John had become a sober person,” Schapiro told the Pittsburgh Post Gazette after Pinette’s death. “The sadness of this entire event is that for the first time in his life he was healthy, he was alive. He’d just turned 50 and John was on top of his game.” The trimmed-down accountant-turnedcomedian was also developing an entirely new act consisting of material he first spoke of during an engagement at the old Sands Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City in August 1993: losing weight. His new show was going to be titled They Call Me Slim, according to Schapiro, who described its contents as “groundbreaking.” Pinette, who had become a regular in Borgata’s Music Box in recent years, graduated from the University of Massachusetts in 1986 with an accounting degree and began working in that field. It didn’t last long. During a hilarious, make-it-up-as-we-goalong television show shot at the Sands in 1993 — as he literally ate his way through almost every stand at the casino’s food court — Pinette said between bites that it only took him a few months to realize accounting wasn’t for him. A naturally funny guy with a knack for ad-lib humor, Pinette said he first regaled his accounting firm colleagues with his jokes. Convinced that being a comedian was better than crunching numbers, he signed up for an open-mike night at a comedy club and cooked the books in his favor by inviting his co-workers. Pinette said he worked around the stereotype that accountants don’t have senses of humor by getting them all drunk before the show. Partly because of his size but mostly because

Avicii, David Guetta, Tiësto, Cedric Gervais, Paul Oakenfold, Calvin Harris and other DJsturned-superstars-in-their-own-right have graced the HQ controls since electronic mixing and the computer-synched dance music craze began its ballistic upswing about a decade ago. All are regulars in the top nightclubs in the U.S. and worldwide, and all are likely to return to the turntables of the 40,000 square-foot HQ too, thanks in large part to Revel’s partnership from the outset with two giants in the nightlife industry — Las Vegas’ Angel Management Group and New York City’s EMM Group — each a multifaceted industry leader in entertainment and hospitality management. Atlantic City Weekly chatted with Matt Minichino, the director of operations for Angel Management Group’s East Coast division, about what’s exciting as HQ approaches its second birthday this summer. This July will mark two years since Revel launched HQ nightclub — how has the club stacked up against overall expectations since it debuted in 2012? HQ Nightclub has exceeded all expectations since opening, and we will continue to raise the bar in 2014. Additionally, HQ was recently recognized in the 2014 DJ Mag’s [djmag.com] Top 100 Nightclubs list, which is a first for any entertainment venue in Atlantic City.

What in particular sets HQ apart from other nightclubs in Atlantic City? HQ provides a worldclass nightlife experience with renowned electronic music talent. It was the first venture of its scale on the East Coast with its impeccable service and premium design, and is the destination of choice for club-goers looking for an unrivaled night out with the world’s best DJ talent.

This will be the second summer for HQ Beach Club (a 45,000-square foot outdoor pool area with a nightlife-ish vibe, slated to open for its second full summer Memorial Day weekend) — is there a lot of interaction or cross-promotion between the two venues in terms of how they appeal to Revel guests? The synergy that exists between HQ Nightclub and HQ Beach Club is like none other. They go hand and hand with making Revel a weekend-long destination property. The objective was to capture our customers through providing a day-life and nightlife experiences to keep them at Revel the entire weekend, and with the success seen by HQ Beach Club last year, I’m confident we achieved our goal. How have the crowds been at HQ Nightclub for your Industry Sunday nights? HQ Industry Sundays is the premier Industry party in Atlantic City with people traveling across the entire East Coast to join us. Some huge names in EDM and pop music have come through HQ, including Sultan & Ned Shepard [whom foremost EDM authority Beatport dubbed “the kings of the progressive scene”] this Friday [April 18], and Fergie [a northern Ireland potentate ranked among DJ Mag’s top-100 DJs seven straight years] on Saturday [April 19]. Are there any other upcoming artists you’re particularly proud of that guests can count on seeing in the coming weeks? We pride ourselves on having the best DJ roster on the East Coast that boasts some of the top artists in the world. This year we will welcome back some of the greats including Manufactured Superstars, Zedd, Chuckie, Sunnery James and Ryan Marciano, as well as some new talent that is sure to keep guests coming back weekend after weekend. ■

ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY • APRIL 17 - 24, 2014

How has Revel’s partnership with Angel Management and the EMM Group panned out since its inception? Has going this route rather than handling all nightlife operations in-house proved the right decision? We are extremely lucky to have partnered with these nightlife experts as they have developed aweinspiring concepts, and provide a wealth of industry knowledge and experience that has truly changed the way Atlantic City views day-life and nightlife.

Increasingly Famous Amos

Amos Lee appears April 18 at the Borgata, 1 Borgata Way, Atlantic City. Tickets are $35 and $39.50. Show time is 9pm. For more information, call 317-1000.

EVENT INFO

The stars of today’s folk and pop world have started lining up to record music with Amos Lee, who’ll perform Friday at the Borgata. By Ed Condran • feedback@acweekly.com

A

mos Lee lives in Philadelphia’s Art Museum area, but he’s a Jersey guy at heart. And though he grew up in Cherry Hill, his fondest memories are of time spent at the Jersey shore. “I used to look forward to it every year,” he says. “I remember going to the Brigantine castle and it was amazing. It was scary, fun and just a blast. We, my family, weren’t fancy people — we would hang out at the Wildwood boardwalk. I loved the rides — I can still see it and smell it.”

facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly

The mellow singer-songwriter is now enjoying the ride as a recording artist, which will take him back to New Jersey. Lee will perform Friday at the Borgata Music Box. “I have a huge soft spot for Atlantic City,” he says, “since it’s right next to Brigantine. I had some family that lived there back in the day.” Lee laughs while recalling his childhood — and chuckles more when, during a chat, he’s told that curly-haired smooth jazz star Kenny G recently admitted he doesn’t

listen to new music. Lee says he can’t imagine living in that sort of sonic vacuum: “That wouldn’t work for me. I need to hear new music. I have to hear it since it inspires me. When I hear great new music, and I think we’re living during a period of really great new music, I’m moved to write. It doesn’t matter what the genre is — if I like it, it can inspire me to craft a song.” Lee’s latest album, Mountains of Sorrow, Rivers of Song, features an amalgam of rich, warm country and folk. “I didn’t aim to record a particular style of song this time out,” he says. “I just went with what moved me. My mind is completely open. I’m not afraid of any style of music.” That fearlessness has led to distinctive, provocative and heavy tunes; each cut includes at least a shard of visceral reality. “I think songs should come from a place,” he says. “I think if you’re moved by something that happened — to you or somebody [else] — you can bring something to the table that has lots of heart and emotion.” The Mountains of Sorrow sessions marked the first time that Lee recorded an album with his touring band. “It was a great experience,” he says. “We spent most of 2011 touring together and we developed this bond. We have this camaraderie and we understand each other so well, so why not bring it to the studio?” His regular side players weren’t the only ones at the mic, though: Bluegrass star Alison Krauss and folk troubadour Patty Griffin both joined Lee in the studio. “After doing so much by myself, it was about time I reached out to like-minded musicians,” he says, “and it was a blast. I had the most fun I’ve ever had as a recording artist. Patty and Alison have incredible voices, and they are just — well, authentic.” Thanks to a burgeoning audience, Lee has graduated from clubs to theaters. “I owe everything to my fans,” he says. “They let me know how much they appreciate my music. The thing that blows me away is that they tell me they tell friends about my music and they’ve really helped expand my base. It’s cool playing larger venues — but I’m just as home playing someone’s living room. It’s just about playing. I remember what it was like starting out and playing open mike nights, and nobody cared about my music. Nobody wanted to interview me, and there were no fans. But I look back at that and appreciate it. I could have stopped — but I kept going, and now I have this incredible career.” He sees his future as wide open: “Who knows what I’ll do next? I try to do something different with each project. Who knows what space I’ll be in? Maybe I’ll hear some wild style of music, and it will impact me, and I’ll make a very different album. The possibilities are endless, and that’s part of what I love about being a recording artist: Nobody can stop you from expressing yourself. That’s so whether you’re playing arenas or a tiny club.” In either sort of venue, Lee’s a charismatic entertainer, adept at connecting with fans from the stage. “It’s the greatest experience,” he says. “How cool is it that this is my job? I get to make music and go out on stage and just do my thing. I love playing live — that’s where it all happens. That’s when things get really interesting.” ■

Vagabond Vittles

Vagabond Kitchen and Tap House 672 North Trenton Ave., West Atlantic City vagabondac.com 350-6721

Gourmet tavern fare may sound like a misnomer, but if the term exists you’ll find it at this revitalized Chelsea Heights landmark. By Frank Gabriel• feedback@acweekly.com

“W

e want to be as different as humanly possible.” Those words, spoken by Elvis Cadavid, copartner with Tom Harris in Atlantic City’s Vagabond Kitchen and Tap House, do seem to nicely define this venture that the two made their very own. The recent passing of a one-year anniversary in business on March 22 serves as clear indication that Cadavid and Harris have successfully shepherded the venerable Chelsea Heights corner property through a long, arduous post-Sandy recovery process. Old-timers will originally remember the restaurant as Teddy’s West End Lounge. The middle-aged might recall it best as Jonathan’s West End. Either way, the pretty locale was deserving of a proper resurrection. The facility now boasts a wide, friendly central taproom featuring water views on two sides plus a trio of smaller, more intimate seating areas, all swathed in an appealing shade of pale olive. A variety of Atlantic City and Philadelphia memorabilia, much of it sports-oriented, lines those walls. Among the region’s preeminent sources of unique brews, Harris describes Vagabond’s concept as “specializing in craft beer.” Fittingly, multiple blackboards in that main space tout their latest divergent, globetrotting selections. About 14 draughts are currently available in an oft-changing menu, among the current ones being Allagash Black, Breckinridge Vanilla Porter, Sly Fox Royal Weisse, Weyerbacher Merry Monks ale, and a pair from nearby Cape May Brewery, their IPA and honey porter. Gleaning ideas from chef John Kunicki

and sous chef Tino Guzman, Cadavid calls the Vagabond menu “high end bar food.” Among its most popular items is an appetizer of tequila shrimp bangers in sweet chili/mayo sauce; a cold sandwich of turkey, Granny Smith apple and brie with sweet smokey pepper jam on walnut raisin bread; and a hot sandwich, the Three Way, composed of brisket, pulled pork, maplepeppered bacon with a North Carolina-style cilantro lime slaw on a brioche bun. We liked the sound of a spicy Californian burger — with avocado, bacon, bibb lettuce

and grilled red onion on brioche — as well as the “hot mess mushroom burger,” topped with shiitakes and cremini, demi glace and smoked gouda on sourdough bread. That “hot mess” theme also extends to dinner, as a recent Friday night special — New York strip hot mess — was layered with melted provolone and served alongside mashed garlic potatoes. The biggest change customers can anticipate soon at Vagabond will be the addition of breakfast, anticipated to debut Friday, April 23. True to Cadavid’s earlier words,

their morning bill of fare is anything but a standard eggs-over-easy-with-home friesand-toast listing. Start with an entirely novel concept — four different breakfast sliders. Variations include fried chicken and biscuit with country gravy, sausage, egg and cheese, an Angus burger with egg, cheese and bacon, or a crab cake — all served on brioche. For the sweeter side of morning dining, they plan a peanut butter and banana French toast on that same walnut raisin bread. Additional big plates bring wildly creative stuff like a chicken and waffle stacker with three pieces of fried breast sandwiched between quartered waffles, an empanada of corned beef hash accompanied by black beans and rice, or Mexican classic huevos rancheros with chorizo, peppers, onions, pico de gallo, avocado and cheddar jack cheese. Additional items include several sandwiches, a breakfast burrito and two breakfast pizzas — one for meat lovers and another with multiple vegetables. From the opposite end of the time spectrum, Vagabond offers some of the A.C. region’s latest late-night fare. The kitchen is open until 1am most weekdays and 3am on weekends. Delivery is available within a five-mile radius, which pretty much encompasses all of Absecon Island. Both partners seem genuinely grateful for the welcome they’ve been accorded by neighborhood locals. Popular with police, firefighters and teachers — specifically promoting a 3-6pm “Ninth Period Happy Hour” for those from nearby Atlantic City High School — Vagabond’s future appears quite prosperous. ■

Costner’s ‘Draft’ Cleveland Browns fans wish this were a documentary. By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com

O

Football Flick With Grit

Watching Draft Day made me want to go back and watch my all time favorite film about the inside workings of a professional football team, North Dallas Forty (1979), available for streaming from Netflix. Directed by another Canadian, Ted Kotcheff, the NFL was not particularly happy about this film ripping open the secret life of the game in the 1970s. Loosely based on the Dallas Cowboys of the early 1970s, the film features rampant illegal drug use, players being asked to play with injuries — shooting up to dull the pain — and the insane off-the-field activities of the rampaging behemoths at play. Nick Nolte starred and the first moment we see him, dragging his crippled body out of bed the day after a game, let us know this was not another rahrah sports movie. The contrast between the NFL approved Draft Day and North Dallas Forty’s expose is striking. n

Costner does what he can to create an interesting character but the screenplay doesn’t provide the necessary moments to make Draft Day the football version of Moneyball, a far superior film on the inside workings of a sports franchise. Still if you are a draftnik, enjoy.

bsessive NFL draft nuts and diehard football fans are the prime audience, and honestly, the only audience, for Draft Day. In particular beleaguered Cleveland Browns fans would do almost anything — even sell their soul to the Devil ala Damn Yankees — to make the fantasy draft in Draft Day come true. In what is essentially a big screen commercial for the NFL, directed by Canadian Ivan Reitman (Animal House, Stripes), the wily Cleveland Browns GM Sonny Weaver, Jr. (Kevin Costner) has an insane plan to get as much out of the NFL draft as he possibly can. Nobody can truly see his vision except perhaps for his smoking hot girlfriend Ali (Jennifer Garner), who is the salary cap specialist for the Browns. The owner (Frank Langella) just wants to make a splash. His head coach (Denis Leary) is afraid Sonny will screw up the team. Then there are the anxious players looking to get on the good side of the GMs, including Chadwick Boseman (42) as a star linebacker, Houston Texans running back Arian Foster as a star running back and Josh Pence as the quarterback and consensus number one pick Bo Callahan. Sean Combs also shows up as Callahan’s smooth talking agent. I’m enough of a football fan to sit through this flick and enjoy the illusion that it gives us a true inside look at how draft day war rooms work and how general managers try to either fleece another franchise or deal with them honestly, or a little bit of both. There is an attempt to expand the scope of the story beyond football with some backstory: Costner’s character is dealing with the recent death of his father and the news that his girlfriend is pregnant. There is also some insight into how one really finds out if these young draftees have the characters to make it in the NFL beyond their obvious skills on the gridiron. However, none of the non-football window dressing elevates the story beyond the obvious attempt to make football fans happy.
