Guns vs. Hoses; Pirates at the Lighthouse
S
aturday and Sunday, May 17-18, the inaugural DO AC Fire on the Water Festival will coincide with the seventh annual “Guns vs. Hoses” firefighters-versus-police officers boxing tournament at Gardner’s Basin. The festival will have crafters, food vendors, beer gardens, live music and kids activities from 10am-7pm both days. The Firefighter Combat Challenge, where firefighters simulate the physical demands of reallife firefighting will start 10:30am Saturday for individual and team competitions, and 11:30am Sunday for relay and tandem competitions. Guns vs. Hoses pits firefighters and police in a three-round amateur boxing tournament starting noon Saturday, raising funds for police and fire charities. Go to fireonthewaterfestival.com for more • As a prelude of sorts to the Fire on the Water Festival, Atlantic City’s firefighters will challenge the resort’s police officers in the fourth annual Big Teplitzky Challenge at the Chelsea Hotel on Saturday, May 10, from 1-4pm. The first to clear his (or her) plate of the four-pound breakfast of pancakes, stuffed French toast, eggs, bacon, sausage, pork roll, hash browns, grilled tomato, toast and a bagel will win an overnight stay at the Chelsea and, more importantly, bragging rights. Proceeds will benefit the Andrew Fisher Memorial Scholarship Fund, the Atlantic County Women’s Center, and the Atlantic City Boys & Girls Club. An after-party will take place at the Chelsea’s Oasis Pool. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased at the door, or by calling 271-2500. • Lookout for Pirates at Absecon Lighthouse. On May 18, the Lighthouse is hosting a day for young seafarers as The Philadelphia Fight Ensemble will present their live rapier skills at 1pm in a show full of exciting swordplay and comedy. Be thrilled as historical figures engage the audience with their swords whilst passing on a bit of their history through interactive fun. Kids will enjoy crafts and Pirate “Jeoparrrrghdy,” a scavenger hunt, and a climb to the top of the Lighthouse to look out for the ghosts of shipwrecks. Dress as your favorite pirate. $12 for kids; $6 for adults. 449-1360. • The Sunshine Boys will bring their bickering to Dante Hall with shows on weekends May 9-18. A bittersweet comedy written by Neil Simon about a famous vaudeville team whose former friendship has been damaged by a long-running feud. $7-$18. Fri., Sat. 8pm; Sun. 2pm. 14 N. Mississippi Ave., Atlantic City. stockton.edu/dantehall. • The Claridge, reborn this month as non-casino hotel, is kicking off the spring with a musical revue in the Claridge Theater, The Edwards Twins, May 9-June 30. Tickets are $40, $50, $75 (VIP) plus fee. Show times are Fri.-Mon., Wed., Thurs. at 7pm. The Edwards Twins are a duo of identical twin brothers who put on a show filled with celebrity impressions, including Sonny and Cher, Billy Joel, Rod Stewart, Elton John, Bette Midler, Neil Diamond, Barbara Streisand, Tina Turner and Elvis Presley. / By Ray Schweibert and Lori Hoffman facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly

Summer Guide Edition June 12th Featuring South Jersey’s taste Magazine
The Cape Bank Jazz @ The Point festival is keynote to a thriving Somers Point jazz community. By Ray Schweibert • feedback@acweekly.com
T
he Somers Point Jazz Society has devoted the past decade to maintaining the rich history of jazz in South Jersey — and, along the way, fostering new interest in America’s indigenous musical art form. Even before the Society’s 2004 founding, though, we had the Cape Bank Jazz @ The Point Festival, which Nick Regine — then Somers Point’s community education/ recreation director — started 18 years ago as a one-day, one-venue event to raise funds for the local school system. Since then, it’s morphed into a four-day, 12-performance, multi-venue jazz fest and centerpiece to a vibrant, year-round music scene. It has also contributed $30,000 to the music and arts programs in the Somers Point School System. Now 300 members strong, the SPJS not only grew the festival but supplemented it with many other concert events and educational initiatives in the mainland community annually. With many of the biggest stars in the genre routinely appearing in town, Somers Point’s jazz scene is reminiscent of a bygone era in Atlantic City when names like Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie, Duke Ellington and others visited and performed regularly. Under second-year SPJS artistic director Joe Donofrio — a Grammy-winning record producer and manager of top talent, most notably Philly jazz guitar legend Pat Martino (last year’s festival headliner) — the 2014 Jazz @ The Point Festival has expanded into Ocean City. Its premier time slot (Saturday, May 17, from 7-8:30pm) will feature the 18-piece Arturo O’Farrill Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra at the Ocean City Music Pier. Fronted by Grammy-winning pianist, composer and musical director Arturo O’Farrill, the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra “brings together the drama of big-band jazz, the culture of Latin music, and the virtuosity of 18 of the world’s most accomplished solo musicians” (visit afrolatinjazz.org). Also on

Saturday night (two sets from 9-9:40pm and 10-10:40pm), the Michael Pedicin quintet performs in the Sandi Pointe Coastal Bistro ballroom. Pedicin is a renowned tenor saxophonist and head of the jazz studies program at Richard Stockton College. Another artist with local ties, vocalist and Brigantine resident Cathy Rocco, will kick off the festival Thursday night, May 15, at the Sandi Pointe ballroom with special guest Houston Person, a tenor saxophonist best known for his partnership with legendary vocalist Etta Jones until she passed away in 2001. An all-star trio fronted by Dr. Eddie Henderson will play two sets in Sandi Pointe’s dining room (9:45-10:30pm and 11-11:45pm) Friday night, May 16. Henderson has been hailed as one of today’s most original jazz trumpet players. The 73-year-old first took trumpet lessons age nine from legend Louis Armstrong in New York City, and in the early 1970s gained worldwide recognition as a player with keyboardist and jazz revolutionary Herbie Hancock. He has been both a medical doctor and a professional musician throughout his adult life. Henderson’s trio also includes pianist John di Martino and bassist Ed Howard. Other acts include the Russell Malone quartet and the John Swana quartet Friday night, the Jerry Topinka/Sean Connolly guitar duo, and the Jason Klinke organ trio on Saturday night; and the John Colianni trio, Jason Brown quartet, Jost Project quartet, and Breckerville quintet on Sunday afternoon. All event scheduling is designed to allow ticket holders to enjoy at least part of all performances. Don’t Panic
Craig Ferguson may be preparing to end his late-night show, but he’s not vanishing from time and space. In fact, he’s coming to the Taj this week. By David J. Spatz • feedback@acweekly.com
C
raig Ferguson may have startled his studio and TV audience when he recently announced he’d be stepping down from The Late Late Show on CBS at the end of the year. Immediately, it seemed, the speculation started, with talking heads wondering whether Ferguson might be miffed that CBS had tapped Stephen Colbert instead of him to take David Letterman’s place in the late-night batting order. (Letterman announced April 3 that he’d be retiring from The Late Show after 22 years; his successor will face the pressure of going head-to-head with Jimmy Fallon and The Tonight Show.) But the truth, Ferguson told the show-biz bible Variety, is that he was already planning to leave his show before Letterman made his surprise announcement. Ferguson told the paper he initially wanted to call it quits this summer, but the network asked him to remain through the end of the year to give them time to find the right replacement. Waiting until the end of the year also allows his staff to find new gigs. He insisted there was never any tension between himself and the Tiffany network. “It wasn’t contentious. I was just like, ‘I feel like I’m done,’” Ferguson told Variety. “We were all fine and were tying up loose ends. And then [Letterman] surprised everybody with [his] announcement and that threw a spanner in the works. And I had to sit and keep my mouth shut while speculation raged wildly.” Ferguson said he expected — and understood — the inevitability of people blaming his decision to leave on the Letterman situation. But the Scottish-born comedian and actor said there was little he could do to circumvent that. “No matter what I say or what I do, they’re gonna say that,” he said. “Well, they can say what they like. It’s America. I understand.” The truth, he added, is that after a decade of hosting The Late Late Show¸ he’d wanted to move on before it became just another job. “Ten years is a very long time in one job for me,” said Ferguson, who plays a comedy gig Saturday night, May 10, at Trump Taj Mahal’s Mark G. Etess Arena. “I wanted to leave the show before I stopped enjoying it.” Ferguson, who turns 52 on May 17, got his start in the business as a teenager when he became the drummer in a rock band called Exposure. Next came a stint with the punk band The Bastards from Hell, which — probably for obvious reasons — was later renamed Dreamboys. (Geek trivia: One of his bandmates was Peter Capaldi, recently

named the new star of the BBC sci-fi show Doctor Who, which Ferguson alone among American TV personalities has frequently championed on air.) Ferguson has credited the band’s lead singer with inspiring him to try comedy. He worked his way up the ladder with performances in a variety of comedy and musical ventures. He wet his feet in television in Scotland in the early 1990s with his own show, which was cancelled in 1994. Relocating to Los Angeles, he landed a role in the short-lived ABC sitcom Maybe This Time, which starred Betty White and Marie Osmond. But it was his seven-year run as Drew Carey’s boss on The Drew Carey Show that made Ferguson a star in American and set him up for his late night [actually early morning] TV show. Although there’ll be an opening at Comedy Central when Colbert exits the channel to take over for Letterman next
year, Ferguson discounted speculation that he might look for another job in late night television. He told Variety that isn’t a direction he’s considering right now. And he emphatically denied wanting Letterman’s job, even though it’s been widely reported that his contract with CBS included a buy-out estimated at between $5 and $15 million if he wasn’t chosen to succeed Letterman. (Ferguson wouldn’t address that point.) “I had no desire — none — to do [Letterman’s] job,” he told Variety. “I could barely keep it together at 12:30, never mind 11:30. Nobody wants to hear it. It’s so bizarre. People want it to be Jay [Leno] and Dave or Jay and Conan [O’Brien] or some kind of big story. That’s not me, that’s not what I want. … Doing [The Late Late Show] wasn’t something I aspired to, either. I kind of fell into this.” Leaving the late-night grind, in any case,
will surely give Ferguson more time to do stand-up comedy. For those only familiar with him as a TV host, Ferguson’s act, free from the censorship shackles of network television, may come as a surprise. He can drop an f-bomb with the best of them, and yet he doesn’t over-do it. Timing is his secret weapon — especially the way he establishes a catchphrase or theme early in the show and then reverts back to it throughout his performance, prompting laughter to erupt in little sonic grenades. ■

Eating Their Way Across Town
REPORT: Atlantic City Alliance’s “Eat Like a Local” dining tour
Food writers from around the country journeyed to A.C. this month to sample the city’s culinary delights. By Frank Gabriel • feedback@acweekly.com Photo: Peter Tobia

ith all due apologies to Charles Dickens, Atlantic City currently finds itself in a situation that is remarkably like “the best of times, the worst of times.” Even as we compete with neighboring states’ ever more aggressive bids to attract regional tourism with their new casinos, our city boasts a new draw of its own: There has simply never been a better local food scene than there is today. The culinary talent and diversity hereabouts is comparable to that of major metro markets 10 or 20 times larger than A.C. It is truly a golden age for the foodobsessed. I should know: I had the distinct pleasure last week to host a small delegation of visiting food journalists for a four-hour “Eat Like a Local” tour, organized under the auspices of the Atlantic City Alliance, and funded through the Casino Develoment Reinvestment Authority. Congregating on an azure spring morning, our group represented a fine cross-section of industry folks: Philip Potempa from The Times of Northwest Indiana; Philadelphia freelance journalist Julie West; Sharon Cutler of Chicago and lasplash.com; Ty Sawyer from Hudson Mod; and Nina Rizzo of the Asbury Park Press. We set off from Revel and headed out for a short tour of the nearby Inlet section, chauffeured in a jitney driven by quick-witted local Frank Becktel, born and raised in the town’s north end. He began with a brief jaunt around what was once the glittery jewel of a waterfront neighborhood around Absecon Inlet — with plans in the works to make it so again. A trio of favorites were pointed out en route: Gilchrist’s famous breakfast spot (whose new Margate location we’ll soon visit in this column), Kelsey and Kim’s, and the Back Bay Ale House.

Michael Hauke’s gourmet pies win hearts at Tony Boloney’s.
Our first stop was Michael Hauke’s insanely marvelous little-pizzeria-that-could, Tony Boloney’s at 300 Oriental Avenue. The Brooklyn-born Hauke has become one of Atlantic City’s greatest ambassadors, boosters and cheerleaders. Our guests marveled, questioned and cooed at the phenomenal grub he presented al fresco on communal picnic benches — delectables like a tikka masala coconut curry pie with paneer cheese and fresh cilantro, the Shanghai Shuffle (a General Tso’s-inspired Asian chicken pizza), or his award-winning 10-spice “Cheesesteak Ole.” Next up on our agenda was a short jaunt to an ethnic A.C. institution — Chelsea’s Little Saigon. Along the way, Becktel and

I shared descriptions of a few more notable eateries that, due to time restrictions, we would only be driving past on this day. They included the famed White House Sub Shop and Ducktown’s Italian mainstays — Angelo’s Fairmount Tavern and Angeloni’s II. Once ensconced in the tiny dining room of Little Saigon, we occupied a wide table and were graciously welcomed by chef/owner Lien Pham. Our visit dovetailed nicely with a recent feature from the New York Times on local Viet cuisine in which Little Saigon was prominently mentioned. Soon steamy, aromatic samplings of her exotic cuisine emerged, in much greater quantities than we could hope to consume. Potempa, whose

family operates a mint farm in Indiana, was particularly taken with the freshness and quality of the spearmint and cilantro used as garnishes. Back in motion as the sun began its westward tilt, we pointed out a few more of Atlantic City’s culinary gems — Dock’s Oyster House, Tony’s Baltimore Grill and Café 2825 among them. Our final stop, appropriately, was A.C.’s most iconic eatery, the Knife and Fork Inn. The towering, statuesque beauty has never looked more photogenic than on this warm spring afternoon. Sawyer in particular, hailing from New York’s tiny upper west side, was so taken with the architecture that he lingered outside, framing the whitewashed Flemish structure from seemingly every possible angle. Once within, co-owner Frank Dougherty welcomed attendees and began a short tour winding through the bar, then the labyrinthine second-, third- and fourth-floor spaces. He even shared a little secret of the building — hidden cabinets built underneath certain seats where liquor could be easily stored during Prohibition. Upon our return to the main dining space opposite their theater-style kitchen, chef Jim Huntzinger graced us with a pair of authentic Jersey shore specialties — fresh, seasonal soft shell crabs and a spectacular, regal whole lobster thermidor, a Knife and Fork signature item for decades. This proved an ideal close to an afternoon devoted to demonstrating what I’ve been saying for some time now — Atlantic City is America’s most underrated food market. And with several fresh new perspectives from folks around the country recently witnessing that fact, we hope it’s a message that will be delivered nationally. ■

Being Jenny Throughout her career, people have advised Jenny McCarthy to tone it down. She’s not about to start listening to them now. By Ed Condran • feedback@acweekly.com

MAY 8 - 15, 2014 • ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY
I
t all could have gone down very differently if Jenny McCarthy abided by the rules. A year after posing for Playboy and being named Playmate of the Year two decades ago, McCarthy left her native Chicago for Los Angeles. Upon arriving in Hollywood, she was offered some advice she promptly ignored: “I was told to find somebody you looked up to and act like them,” she recalls. “Sadly, I couldn’t think of anyone I looked up to at that moment — but the reality is, I thought that was an awful thing to say to anybody. I knew then I couldn’t be anybody but me.” When McCarthy first scored her breakout gig in 1995 as co-host of the MTV game show Singled Out, the perky bombshell was told to dial it down. “They wanted me to be very Vanna White,” McCarthy said. But she was no quiet smiler: “I couldn’t do it. I decided that I would be me, crazy Jenny, this gross pin-up… the girl my mother always knew. People had to get ready for me.” McCarthy, now 41, has been speaking her mind her entire adult life. In recent years, that’s made her a nationally polarizing figure: The activist mother of a child with autism, she’s become the icon of those who fear childhood vaccines may be a cause of autism. It’s a belief for which no accepted scientific evidence exists, even while recent infectious disease outbreaks have underlined the importance of vaccination to public health. But McCarthy has never been one to go with the status quo. “I don’t know how you do anything but speak about what’s on your mind,” she says. “You have to walk your own truth. That’s actually the easy part; when you don’t do that, you’re in a living hell. You have to shout back about what’s right.” Her example: “Look at this horrific situation with that [Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald] Sterling guy now.”. And look at how McCarthy defended her cousin Molly McCarthy, the rubenesque movie and television star, when critic Rex Reed slammed her body size, not her work, in a review of the 2013 film Identity Thief. “I had to” stick up for her, McCarthy says. “If you want to attack someone’s art, attack that, not the person. When it gets personal, I think it gets ridiculous.”
So it’s no surprise that McCarthy has added her voice to the ABC chat show The View, which is built upon a cast of opinionated women. “I think I fit in well,” she says. “I’ve been in talk show development for ten years, and when Joy [Behar] left, I thought, ‘This might be a great opportunity.’ One thing led to another, and I’m on The View. I love it. I’m on with some great ladies, particularly Barbara Walters — who is days away from leaving the show, and I can see and feel her pain.” McCarthy adds a different twist to the show, for sure. “But that’s what makes the show work,” co-host Whoopi Goldberg says. “Jenny has opinions. She doesn’t hold back. She doesn’t care if she is coming from a very different direction than some people around the country. She’s smart, interesting and she’s also funny.” Her comedic sensibilities form the basis of her latest side gig, which comes to Atlantic City this weekend: McCarthy’s currently out with her “Dirty, Sexy, Funny” tour, featuring a number of emerging female comics. “I go out to comedy clubs, and I would see one female comic just really crack me up,” she says. “I decided to put together a group of women — and it’s worked out really well.” The lineup she’s assembled has some impressive cred. Tammi Pescatelli impressed during Last Comic Standing. Lynne Koplitz, who could be a stunt double for Cindy Crawford, offers clever observations. “When people see someone like Lynne,” McCarthy says, “they’re suprised she’s funny because she is so pretty. It annoys me that anyone would believe that comedy isn’t pretty — look at Lucille Ball. She was a comic genius who was beautiful. All of my girls are pretty and they’re funny; It’s a great combination.” McCarthy doesn’t do standup herself; she’ll introduce the comedians when the tour stops Saturday at the Borgata. “I go out and do my ‘Wokka, wokka’ and have fun,” she says. “But I don’t have any desire to do stand-up… Everything is going very well for me right now. I can’t complain about a thing.” ■ Dirty, Sexy, Funny with Jenny McCarthy & Friends appears Saturday, May 10, at the Borgata Music Box, A.C., 8pm. Tickets are $29.50 and $35. theborgata.com 317-1000

ize that I didn’t dance with the Pips. The Pips — yes, they danced. I sang. The Pips once said, ‘You strut and we dance.’ They were fabulous dancers; I was doing something else.” Still, she says, Dancing With the Stars was too great a challenge to resist: “I’ve always enjoyed watching the show. I was thrilled to have the opportunity — it’s certainly different than what I do and have always done.” Dancing With the Stars was a far cry, in any case, from Knight and the Pips’ formative days in the entertainment world. “It was a group effort,” she recalls of their early career. “We knew we could make it a reality, and we ended up doing the job. It’s different than it is today: We worked so hard, but it was fun work. We used our imagination and had a blast. We played church and we played talent shows. Before we knew it, we had this amazing career.” Charlie Wilson has had an amazing career as well — the charismatic former frontman of the Gap Band has belted out his share of quirky hits, including “You Dropped a Bomb on Me” and “Burn Rubber on Me” — as have the members of Heads of State. So whether Mom likes to get her groove on to the sounds of the ’60s, ’70s or ’80s, she’ll be in luck this weekend. ■

t’s not easy buying a Mother’s Day gift, right? You’ve already given Mom everything over the years — except, perhaps, tickets to the Mother’s Day Music Festival. And 2014’s, slated for Saturday, May 10, at Boardwalk Hall, promises to be a memorable one, featuring such R&B luminaries as Charlie Wilson, Gladys Knight and Heads of State — a.k.a. Bobby Brown, Ralph Tresvant and Johnny Gill, formerly of New Edition. Better than just another pretty flower basket, no? It’s hard to believe Gladys Knight has been singing for more than half of a century, but there it is: At 69, she’s won seven Grammys and the hearts of many R&B loving fans. Knight has belted out such favorites as the number one smash “Midnight Train to Georgia,” “You’re the Best Thing To Ever Happen To Me” and “Neither One of Us (Wants To Be The First To Say Goodbye).” “It’s been a while that I’ve been doing this,” she says. “I’ve been unbelievably fortunate to do this all of these years.” Knight’s voice is still stellar; she’s in that rarefied group of brilliant-sounding senior citizens that includes peers like Smokey Robinson (himself due to hit A.C. later this month). “I know how to preserve my voice,” Knight says. ”I’ve been singing since I was four. I learned a lot of little things from mentors, and I’ve been as healthy as I can be. You have to, if you want to keep going in this business.” Knight loves to sing, but she can also dance; she was a Dancing With The Stars contestant in 2012. Which isn’t to say she found it a cakewalk: “Some people thought I would have no problem on that show because of my past,” she says, “but they didn’t real-

Boring bad guys drain energy from The Amazing Spider-Man 2. By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com
B
The two primary villains in the latest Spidy flick, written by Alex Kurtzman, Robert Orci and Jeff Pinkner, are more like Mad Magazine parodies of villains than credible opponents. Both are wishy-washy losers, not a good look for a villain. That Jaguar commercial is right — for really good villains, hire Brits! Instead, Spidey 2 features Dane DeHaan, a fine young actor, and Oscar winner Jamie Foxx, who have been handed terrible characters and asked to make them better. They really can’t. DeHaan as Harry Osborn/Green Goblin is such a total crybaby wimp that his villain status is a joke. Foxx, forced to glow electric blue as Electro (he falls into a vat of electric eels), doesn’t have it much better — not to mention his plan to suck all the electricity out of New York isn’t exactly a terrifying plot turn. The subplot revealing more about Peter’s father (played by Campbell Scott) is the one solid plot addition this time around, but that can’t begin to repair the damage of the overall mediocrity of the script. Garfield and Stone still have a nice chemistry, but without a decent script, the whole adventure falls flat. As for director Marc Webb, his action sequences beyond the first one are bland, connect-the-webs CGI, almost immediately forgettable. In the end, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is amazingly disappointing. n

ack when it was announced that a new reboot of the Spider-Man movies was in the works just a couple of years after the Sam Raimi-Tobey Maguire Spider-Man ended its run in 2009, the comic book world wondered why? Why was it deemed necessary to re-launch the series? Obviously Spider-Man was not in the same class as Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, but it was still a threesome of pretty good movies. When the 2012 reboot debuted with Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone as shy teen Peter Parker and his sassy high school sweetie Gwen Stacy, the response was polite applause. My review noted that the teen angst was pitch perfect (despite the fact that Garfield was 28), but that the action side of the adventure lacked credible, scary villains and the “wow moments” one expects from a superhero movie. Two years later, watching Peter and Gwen graduating from high school in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is nearly as ridiculous as the “kids” from Glee. Both performers look way too mature for high school, a fact that becomes an immediate distraction. On top of that Peter keeps seeing an angry vision of Gwen’s late father (Denis Leary). He promised her dad that he would walk away from the relationship to keep Gwen safe from Spider-Man’s enemies — but he hasn’t exactly been keeping that promise, and the guilt is this chapter’s substitute for teen angst. As for Spider-Man as superhero, he’s back in the good graces of the citizens of New York City after stopping a rampaging Russian (Paul Giamatti) trying to steal the ingredients to make a nuclear bomb. Unfortunately, the first major action sequence is the best that Spider-Man 2 offers.
