Bill Cosby will play Revel this Saturday.
tion. It was a cold start. I introduced myself and was greeted with … silence. I wasn’t Bill Cosby. I was a special added distraction with no script and no advance notice. So I did what comes naturally to me: I talked. And talked and talked and talked. I gave them the history of the Opera House, shared a few Sinatra stories and spoke about the “temporary” new theater and the property’s future plans. A stage hand materialized beside me, handed me a long object wrapped in white paper and whispered in my ear. “Mr. Cosby wants you to hand this out,” he said. It was a regular White House Sub. Cosby considers their subs its own food group. I asked who was hungry, and dozens of hands that had just feasted on lobster and filet mignon shot up. I handed over the sub. Back came the stage hand with another sub. And then another. I looked stage right and saw Cosby standing in the wings laughing. I was glad someone was having a good time. A few seconds later, the stage manager gave me the wrap sign. I said goodnight to the audience and introduced Cosby, who high-fived me a thank-you as I stepped into the darkness and he walked into the spotlight. Cosby makes his debut Saturday night in Revel’s Ovation Hall with his new sit-down comedy show Far From Finished. Wish he’d used that title 19 years ago. At least I’d have had something to work with. ■ see more online @

erry Ryan’s passion for music goes back as far as he can remember — certainly farther back than 11 years ago, when he became a father. That passion became all the more important, though, when his son Jeremy was diagnosed with autism. Ryan knew that music would be a crucial means of confronting the disorder and improving the social interaction it can impede. “Music therapy has helped my son in a number of ways, including sensory issues, two-way communication and self-expression,” says Ryan, “but more importantly it gives him a source of enjoyment and fills his heart with happiness on a daily basis.” Jeremy has been playing the piano for eight years now — and recently took up an interest in the drums. Ryan wants to see other kids flourish the same way. “I wanted to give all children with autism the same opportunities my son has been given,” he says, “to not only blossom but to heal through music and identify skills they may not have realized up to that point.” That’s why, three years ago, Ryan created the Elephants for Autism Music Festival — a name spun from the online Elephant Talk Indie Music Magazine and its affiliated concert series that Ryan also established. This year’s festival will take place Friday through Sunday, May 16-18, on five stages at neighboring venues Le Grand Fromage and The Boneyard. All money raised will support the music program at the Archway School in Marlton, which provides a variety of individualized programs for special-needs students. About 165 bands/individual artists have committed to performing at this year’s festival, which has grown each year. “I’m really looking forward to building on an already solid foundation of teachers, staff and students that are truly inspiring,” Ryan says, “including the two biggest reasons I’ve decided on Archway [as this year’s beneficiary] in the first place — their music director, Susan Herrick, and [community outreach director] Doug Otto. They invited

me up to the school after reading an article about last year’s festival in AC Weekly, and during a visit with my family I absolutely fell in love. “Susan’s innovative teachings and her thinking outside the box, combined with the amazing connection she and Doug have with their students and staff, made it feel like it’s a perfect match,” he adds. “I had a great feeling right away and still do. I’m excited to take this next step and give these kids a chance to shine and excel through music.” Typically each festival performer plays a half-hour set in revolving fashion, alternating between three indoor stages at Le Grand Fromage, and indoor and outdoor stages at The Boneyard, located a short walk away. Bands will be coming from as far away as Los Angeles, Atlanta and Boston, with the vast majority originating from New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. For a full list of performers, visit the Elephants for Autism Music Festival’s Facebook page. “I feel so incredibly lucky and to have been given this opportunity in life, and absolutely blessed to be surrounded by so much love and support on a daily basis,” says Ryan. “I couldn’t do what I do without this amazing support system.” An Elephants for Autism CD will be made available for purchase toward the cause. Additionally, the three-piece South Jersey-based ska/punk band Ill Rendition (vocalist/guitarist Christian Glomb, bassist Loren Rondeau and drummer Leon Castrenze) will have a limited supply of CDs on sale at the festival including three original songs for $3, with all proceeds going toward Elephants for Autism. ■ Elephants for Autism Music Festival
Friday through Sunday, May 16-18 Le Grand Fromage (25 Gordon’s Alley) and The Boneyard (20 S. Virginia Ave.) in A.C. Benefits the music program at the Archway School in Marlton. $10 per day or $25 for a weekend pass. Free parking. All ages welcome to 8pm; 18 and over after 8pm (21+ to drink).

Who’s That Band? Memories of the Kit Kats, the Geatormen and more. By Jerry Blavat
O
nce again, greetings and salutations. Before getting to your questions, I would like to thank everyone, especially Longport Media and Junior’s Doughnuts & Dogs in Margate, for making this year’s Shirley Mae Run and Michael J. Walk on May 10 the most successful event ever. It was such a groove for me to be a part of it, along with Pinky Kravitz, David Spatz, WMGM’s Matt Murray and Tess Taylor, and having everyone dancing on the Boardwalk. Can you believe next weekend will be the beginning of our 42nd season at Memories in Margate? Yes, it’s Memorial Day Weekend, and we’ll go live all weekend long on KOOL 98.3 starting Friday night, May 16 — with a special appearance Sunday night by the amazing group Low Cut Connie. Time for your questions — but first I’ve got a trivia question for you, and if you’ve been listening to our live broadcast from the Live Bar at the Golden Nugget on KOOL 98.3 on Thursdays, you’ll know the answer to this one. What movie put the Armani label on the map? Hint: John Travolta originally was set to star in it. Answer below — now, let’s ask the Geator. I am a long time fan of yours. I am a singer/ songwriter in the Philly area and I have no idea what to do to get my songs heard. I was hoping you could give me some advice? — Lisa McAneny Smith, Philadelphia
I’m having an argument with a friend of mine who refuses to believe me when I tell her that you once were in a band. She says that you did singles on your own but never were in a band. Who is right? — Nita, Washington Township
Years ago songwriters were able to go to record publishers who were looking for material to present to artists. Today it’s a whole different ballgame. Most of today’s recording artists record their own material. What I suggest is to see if you can find a song publisher in New York, L.A., or Nashville and present some of your material to them with the possibility that they would place it.
You win the argument. In the late ’60s, when I was doing my TV show Jerry’s Place on WFIL, I put together an eight-piece band with some local musicians and began performing with them. Because of TV we became very successful and did local club appearances billed as the Geatormen. The seven Geatormen, without the Geator, later appeared uncredited in the movie Where Angels Go, Trouble Follows.
You played a song by a group that sounded a lot like Spanky & Our Gang. You said it was a group from Philadelphia. The song had something to do with getting lost on a country road. What’s the name of the song? — Patty Curran, Atlantic City
Answer to the trivia question: The movie was American Gigolo in 1980. John Travolta’s manager originally suggested the Armani wardrobe. When Travolta dropped out, Richard Gere took over. Travolta also turned down the roles Gere took in two other films, Days of Heaven and An Officer and a Gentleman. ■
You’ve got the name — it’s “Let’s Get Lost on a Country Road” by the Kit Kats, on the Jamie-Guyden label. Great club group from JERRY BLAVAT Philly that worked the shore Got a question for Jerry? Send it to area for many years.
AskTheGeator@acweekly.com or Geator Gold Radio, 626 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106. For more info on Jerry’s appearances, go to www.geator.net — and keep on rocking, ’cause you only rock once!
Harrahʼs Resort, 777 Harrahʼs Blovd. 4415165, harrahsresort.com. Open 24/7. Circular lounge on gaming floor. Many 50-inch plasma TVs. Smoking allowed.

Gleeful Rock Fun Neon Trees mixes up punk-pop energy, rainbow flair and a clean-living ethic. By Josh Kruger • feedback@acweekly.com
I
t must be said: When you think of musical acts playing Atlantic City, a group of Mormons rocking some New Wave-punk-pop isn’t necessarily the first thing that comes to mind. Tyler Glenn and his band, Neon Trees, are ready to change that. The Utah-based foursome, who’ll play House of Blues on Friday, May 16, are a bit of a unique flavor in the retropunk world. Glenn himself is openly gay as well as Mormon. His bandmates Elaine Bradley, Branden Campbell and Chris Allen are all practicing members of the Church of Latter Day Saints, too, and they all have some serious devotion: to their professionalism as musicians. “We decided to adopt a guideline of clean living [for the band],” drummer Bradley tells Atlantic City Weekly. It was a matter of translating their shared religious background into a commonsense work ethic for the sake of the music: “We couldn’t work as hard or as often or as early or as late if we were just messed up or hung over or whatever. You don’t show up to the office drunk — why on earth would you show up drunk to a show?” The band’s commitment shows. Rolling Stone recently called Neon Trees an outright “powerhouse.” And though they may hail from the same cultural background as the Osmonds, they’re far from saccharine; there’s something very rock, very punk, and very, well, sincere about them. ”Here we go again,” Glenn sighs in the refrain to “Animal”; while the melodies are upbeat, the words offer insight into a well-considered perspective on romantic tragedy and tribulation. Bradley credits Neon Trees’ thoughtful lyricism to the frontman’s life experience — and she’s humbled by the success it’s wrought, “How cool is to be on The Tonight Show?” she marvels. “We’re this band that has this ability to keep grounded, but we’re constantly striving for more, and we’re very grateful, very, very grateful.” Still, sometimes the fame and success can get a little overwhelming. The remedy? Each other. “We’re the type of people with a good balance,” she says, “truly a band that helps keep each other in check.” If any of them shows any sign of rock-star ego, she says, the rest remind them who they are. The hard part, she notes, comes with managing their deserved success while maintaining the creative fire that pushes young artists to excel. “We’re constantly striving for more,” she says. “It’s this tightrope between contentment and gratitude [for our current success] with hunger and drive [for more].” While they’ve had two songs featured on Glee, several featured gigs on late-night talk shows and the rest of their tracks are available for download on iTunes, Bradley says Neon Trees are best enjoyed like all rock bands are: in person. “It’s really about us and the audience playing off of each other,” she says. Take one of the band’s hits: “We don’t ever get tired of playing ‘Animal,’” she says, “because every time [we play it live] it feels a little different depending on the room, on the people. We all thrive on a live show and the interaction between audience and performer.” Frontman Glenn, particularly, takes full advantage of the

freedom of the live stage, Bradley chuckles: “Every night there’s a different vibe. You just never know what he’s going to say — he shoots from the hip.” And the fact of the matter, she says, is that Neon Trees always wanted to be a touring band first and foremost. “I dont think [studio albums] ever fully encapsulate what we do live,” she says. Fans seem to agree. Sometimes, this leads to interesting situations. “Like, twice in our career, there have been women that still think it’s the ’80s and want to show us their breasts,” she laughs, “even though three of us are married, Tyler is gay, and we are all like, ‘We don’t want those.’” Surely, though, there’s some timeless rock & roll nostalgia
to be found in fans throwing their bras at a singer, gay or not, Mormon or not? Bradley acknowledges good-naturedly: “There’s something in a live show that you’re going to miss if you don’t see it.” ■

to his credit, and he appeared on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno. The Los Angeles-based performer is also a familiar face on VH1’s I Love the ‘80s. “It all worked out because I’m making a living doing what I love to do,” he says. “All I want to do is make people laugh, I remember my father’s smile when he came with me to The Tonight Show and he got to watch me and meet Jay Leno. Doing TV is a blast.’ Koy is at his best when he’s spinning humorous yarns about his family. “I like talking about what I know and who I know, because it’s authentic,” he says. “The things about my son or my mom make me laugh the most. I really love it when people come up to me after a show and tell me how much they relate to what I go through. They tell me they have the same experience with their kids.” That said: “I can be topical. Anyone who’s seen me on Chelsea Lately knows that. When I do my own show, I do what I want to do.” ■

By Ed Condran • feedback@acweekly.com ollege isn’t for everybody — particularly for certain types of creative performers “It’s a different world for comedians,” D.L. Hughley once said. “Guys like me get another kind of education.” Fellow comic Jo Koy can relate. He went to college, sure — the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, in the early ’90s — but he received his education across the street, at the comedy club Catch a Rising Star, whose open-mike nights finally gave his life some direction. “College for me was just horrible,” Koy says. “I’m just not a student. I enrolled for one reason: to make my mother happy. But when I discovered the club across the street, that’s when I went to work. That club was my school. The best thing that ever happened to me was finding that club.” His Filipino mother begged to differ. “When I told her what I wanted to do, she said, ‘What is comedian?’” Koy laughs. “‘You don’t want to do that. You need a job with insurance and benefits.’” But Koy ignored his mother’s notions just as surely as if they were a UNLV professor’s lesson plans. And 22 years later, neither the comedian’s mother nor his instructors can argue with his decision. Koy, who’ll perform Friday at the Borgata Music Box, has a Comedy Central Presents special

ilchrist. Around these parts, that name conjures up thoughts of one of the area’s legendary breakfast and lunch spots — a 60-plus year tradition started on Maryland Avenue in 1946, closed in 2007, and eventually reopened in 2011 on Rhode Island Avenue in Atlantic City’s Inlet section. Specifically, we think of their glorious morning specialty: hotcakes. To be even more precise, blueberry hotcakes exploding with the tangy, tart essence of that glorious, healthful fruit. As of April 3, there’s another location where we can savor Gilchrist’s breakfast and lunches: at the opposite end of Absecon Island, at 9400 Atlantic Avenue in Margate. Situated in the first-floor northernmost corner of a multi-story apartment complex, the new eatery called Gilchrist Downbeach is bright and spacious, with seating for about 100. The entrance itself seems thoughtfully designed — no doubt with an eye towards quickly moving the hungry masses of patrons certain to begin swarming the place now that May has arrived. Fourthgeneration owner and operator Michael Barham says the nascent venture “exceeded expectations of how soon the word would get out. We did no advertising; I wanted it to be a soft open, gradually, but the first Sunday, our fourth day, we had a waiting line. It’s amazing how, through word of mouth, the community is believing in us and supporting us.” The 32-year-old Barham credits his mother, Denise Stamat, owner/operator of the Atlantic City enterprise, with encouraging him to expand the family’s culinary empire. Asked why they chose Margate — the Gilchrist clan also has an additional, offshore satellite restaurant in Galloway Township — he says, “When we reopened in

AC [in 2011] we didn’t know what to expect. In Gardner’s Basin, we get tourists as well as everyone else. That’s great — but it discourages a lot of people away from Margate, Ventnor and Longport. We had a client base in Downbeach already. We would see people once or twice a month in A.C., but are now seeing them two or three times a week here.” According to Barham, the space, which appears as if another 40 or so seats could

easily have been crammed in, instead was designed to accommodate larger parties. On a recent midweek morning visit, we sampled those blueberry hotcakes. They arrived quickly — fragrant, airy and crepelike, with lovely little designer-like goldenlatticed edges. Though not standard-issue cakes, which rise significantly higher and generally posses a doughier texture, these griddled delights make an ideal conveyance for the berries. or workmanlike, the batter produces a level of crispness that is indeed rare — a real local food treasure totally living up to its hype. And it promises to only get better in the coming weeks with the arrival of local blueberries, perhaps from the nearby fields of western Atlantic County’s Hammonton. We opted for a meat side that’s rather unusual; grilled bologna. Gilchrist is one of very few breakfast places we know of offering this regional specialty; similar in shape and appearance to pork roll, the Italian lunchmeat’s flavor profile is the difference. Beefy and salty, it pairs beautifully with the sweetness and intense fruitiness of the cakes. My dining partner’s omelet, a spinach, tomato and feta version, was of the pancooked variety, arriving in a well-formed half-moon shape. Plenty of each ingredient was blended within, and the portion of eggs was equally generous. Home fries, which accompanied the omelet, were the morning’s only clunker. Though not perfectly uniform, a positive sign of fresh prep, they were a bit undercooked and lacked the presence of any obvious seasoning. Lunch items here include a wide variety of sandwiches; Reubens, corned beef, roast beef and turkey specials, crab cakes, plus fresh, house-made chicken and tuna salads. But it’s the humble meatloaf — a longstanding Thursday tradition in Atlantic City now appearing in Margate — that rivals those hotcakes as a house signature item. Later this season, patrons may anticipate the addition of outdoor seating on a patio area fronting the glass-walled restaurant — just like its waterfront A.C. sibling. “One thing that’s funny about this place,” says Barham, “during the weekdays it has the old Gilchrist feel.” ■

Annoying ‘Neighbors’
AA C CW W EE EE KK LL YY .. C CO OM M
a&e: MOVIES >>
Beyond airbag deployment, this comedy falls flat. By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com
B
y their nature, R-rated comedies are designed to push the envelope, to obliterate the boundaries of decorum, hoping to achieve an edgy, maybe even uncomfortable level of hilarity. The Hangover is a prime example of finding the R-rated sweet spot: I still cringe remembering that I laughed when a baby is hit with a car door. Unfortunately, Neighbors is a prime example of what happens when the laughs are missing in action. The premise seemed like a no-brainer: A young couple, not that far removed from their own wild college years but now with an adorable toddler in tow, are concerned when a fraternity moves into the house next door. Mac and Kelly (Sean Rogen, Rose Byrne) don’t want to seem lame, and even try to avoid trouble by being proactive. They speak with the fraternity president Teddy (Zac Efron), hoping to set up boundaries beforehand, but how can a family hope to have a normal life with the 24/7 insanity of a frat house next door? If they could there would be no movie; even with the conflict in place there isn’t much of a movie. The stage is set for a clash of epic comedic proportions — and then it never happens. What follows looks like it should be funny, but despite the often-heroic efforts of the cast, the premise never reaches beyond the obvious despite the cruel and nasty oneupmanship between the couple and the frat house that follows. There is criminal activity back and forth. That the policeman who shows up seems disinterested in keeping the peace might be interesting if we were given a reason for his lack of interest. And, if you’ve seen the coming attraction for Neighbors, the film’s only big laugh has
been spoiled, the creative use of automobile airbags in something other than an automobile. Why is this movie so flat? One obvious reason is that the writing is flaccid in the plot points, character development and the lack of any truly funny lines. In order for us to feel the sharp edges of the premise, the characters need to be sharp and they are pathetically underwritten. Directed by Nicholas Stoller (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Get Him to the Greek), the screenplay is credited to newcomers Andrew J. Cohen and Brendan O’Brien. The clichés about fraternity life apparently haven’t changed since Animal House, but you need well-developed characters to draw the laughs out of the drunken shenanigans and the hazing. Instead we are given stereotypes from Frat House 101. The laughs on the couples’ side are based on their desire to believe they are still funloving party animals despite the need to reign in their wild side to make sure their adorable tot Stella is safe and happy. This solid cast tries to find the comedy in the middle of this mess. Their performances seem like they should be amusing, but like a series of bad Saturday Night Live sketches, you keep hoping that the next bit will find the comedic mojo. Instead, one’s funny bone remains unmoved. n
