ou’ve heard the term “girls night out,” but what about a guys’ night — or in this case, day — out? The Average Joe Expo seems to have been created as the ultimate event for men. Picture a man’s cave but on a bigger level — cold beer, cigars, video games, cars, bikes, greasy food and outdoor sports such as fishing, skating and paintball, all housed in more than 200,000 square feet of exhibition space. The Expo will not only feature the latest trends in male products from a variety of popular vendors, but it will also allow attendees to experience educational demonstrations and seminars. Some of the programming includes an educational walk through on what makes beer so “tasty,” an instructional craps set up to help turn any average Joe into an expert at shooting dice, tips and advice on Fantasy Sports as well as BBQ lessons. The two-day event is filled with opportunities for men to discover new products, experience innovative sporting and entertaining techniques, and educate themselves on the things they love to do while hanging out with their buds. With summer right around the corner, the timing for this show is ideal for all “average Joes” to brush up on their sporting and BBQ-ing skills and earn bragging rights with the fellows this year. Brown Bird

‘Fits of Reason’ (Supply and Demand)

The Providence, Rhode Islandbased Brown Bird (featuring David Lamb and Morgan Eve Swain) could very well break out of the shadowy indie world with its new release, Fits of Reason. The band’s fifth album comes out 10 years since Lamb started writing mellow, folksy-type tunes (think early Iron & Wine), a sparse theme that he and all incarnations of his Brown Bird ensemble stuck with for most if its existence. Now, with the addition of electric guitar, Lamb’s songs take on a psych-rock edge, mixed with Middle Eastern sounds, gritty blues and a rustic Americana vibe. Tunes such as “The Messenger,” “Seven Hells” (and most of the album, in fact) is better than anything Jack White has done in his years since the White Stripes broke up. Not that Brown Bird sounds like anything Jack White has done, but hopefully Brown Bird will start getting its due props and become more respected in the industry. Like so many great bands out there that you’ve never heard, Brown Bird is making music from the soul, undaunted with keeping up with the latest trends in music and charting its own unique course. You ought to check ‘em out. — Jeff Schwachter

couple of lines from Jimmy Buffett’s gem song “A Pirate Looks at Forty” could sort of summarize the optimistic and pessimistic views of Atlantic City’s current state. Pessimists see the city in an irreversible state of decline, unlikely to ever recover from the loss of gaming revenue to neighboring states (“the cannons don’t thunder, there’s nothin’ to plunder”). Optimists view A.C. as having found ways to rebound from hard times often in its storied past and, with so much to offer, see it as well on its way to getting back in the black already (“in your belly you hold the treasures few have ever seen”). Buffett, of course best known as a musician but also an entrepreneur and best-selling author, and Morris Bailey, Resorts’ principal owner and a New York City real estate mogul, are optimists. Each also achieved high levels of success by taking risks in enterprises they saw as worthy of investment. The Margaritaville complex — comprising 17,400 square feet inside Resorts plus the 8,000 square-foot LandShark Bar & Grill on the rebuilt Steeplechase Pier — represents the kind of multi-million-dollar investment that only those who see major rebound potential in Atlantic City would even give a passing thought to making. “I think Jimmy and Morris were brilliant in their forethought because, clearly, the first thing that comes to mind when you visit the Jersey shore is the beach and ocean,” says Mark Giannantonio, president and CEO of Resorts who, like Bailey, was born and raised in A.C. “So what better spot to put a LandShark and a Margaritaville than right on the beach by the ocean? It’s such a good fit for our property specifically, and for Atlantic

“This is not only going to be a game changer for us, but I really do think it’s going to help draw more visitors to Atlantic City.” City and the Boardwalk in general. “Morris is 110 percent committed to Atlantic City and its future, and is working so hard not only to improve this property but really to help change the way people think about Atlantic City. I see it in our employees, how loyal they are as a result of everything he’s doing. He’s really facilitated long-term change here at the property that I feel will sustain profitability.” The Margaritaville project is slated to open Friday, May 24. It includes the Margaritaville restaurant, the Five O’Clock Somewhere Bar (with “flair” bartenders), a themed gaming area, two retail stores and the first coffee shop in any Margaritaville property (of which several exist worldwide), all on the land side of the Boardwalk. The LandShark Bar & Grill will be situated on 200 feet of beach frontage, and will be the only year-round, full-service bar and restaurant on the beach. Bailey sunk $35 million into the A.C. Margaritaville project, and a figure rivaling that amount on upgrades inside Resorts since purchasing the property with the late Dennis Gomes in September 2010. Last summer he established a management agreement with Mohegan Sun in a move that would also allow the company to cross-market Resorts with its other casino properties in Connecticut and Pennsylvania. “He really has doubled down on not just

the future of Resorts but on Atlantic City as well,” says Giannantonio. “This is not only going to be a game changer for us, but I really do think it’s going to help draw more visitors to Atlantic City. “[Margaritaville]’s a great, fun project and it’s coupled with a property that was built in the 1920s and has a beautiful elegance to it. And when you merge that elegance with Margaritaville, it really kind of throws you into a place like South Beach [Miami] where there’s gorgeous properties and yet you also have many casual, fun venues as well. And nothing’s more fun than Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville and LandShark Bar & Grill. It just blends really well.” As stunning as the new construction is among the Margaritaville components in the casino, says Giannantonio, guests will really be blown away when they walk across the boards and into the Landshark Bar & Grill. “The structure is so beautifully built — the timber, the glass doors, the deck that’s almost right on the sand,” he says. “Our goal is to just wow every customer that comes into our building — whether it’s to LandShark or Margaritaville or into our casino. We want guests to have a wonderful, fun and freespirited time.” About five years ago Buffett’s Margaritaville Holdings LLC nearly set up shop in the A.C. marina district, in what is now Golden

Nugget. That deal fell through but, according to Margaritaville director of new business Tamara Baldanza, the company never abandoned the idea of coming to Atlantic City. “We’ve been wanting to come to Atlantic City for a long, long time,” says Baldanza. “This opportunity with Resorts was just the perfect partnership at the perfect time in the perfect location. Atlantic City and Margaritaville are both about fun and escapism for all ages. With the new Margaritaville complex at Resorts, guests can come and enjoy a little gaming, bring their kids to grab a cheeseburger, check out our stilt walkers or spend an evening listening to live music on the beach at LandShark Bar & Grill. “We want the Margaritaville experience to be another reason for folks to escape to Atlantic City — for an hour, a day or a weekend. Atlantic City is an iconic beach town and we’re thrilled to be part of the community and a partner with Resorts.” Adds Baldanza, “I think Jimmy said it best when asked about coming to A.C. [during a July 2012 Boardwalk press conference that also included N.J. Gov. Chris Christie]: ‘Atlantic City has historically always been a great beach town, and needless to say I kind of thrive in those kinds of communities. And it certainly does not go without being noticed by me and many of those who work for me that the Jersey shore has the largest flock of Parrotheads up and down the eastern seaboard. So while we are helping to bring back a great beach town, we are also giving a flock of migrant birds a nest to come to. I guess it started with that Drifters song when I was a kid in Alabama called “Under the Boardwalk,” and then watching Miss Mississippi win the Miss America Pageant at the Atlantic City Convention Center [in back-to-back years, 1959 and 1960].’” Much of the Boardwalk side of Resorts will now be predominantly Margaritaville themed, but Giannantonio says that the existing Roaring ’20s, Prohibition-era motif of the property (which was built in the 1920s, and became A.C.’s first casino in 1978) will largely remain. “We’ve gravitated away from it to some degree, but one thing you can’t take away from the building is its history and elegance,” says Giannantonio. “We’ve refinished all the woodwork, the lobby, the dining level — improvements have been made nearly everywhere. What we did stop was playing the Roaring ’20s music. Cocktail servers still have the flapper uniforms, which we think are beautiful and didn’t need to be changed, and the bellmen and doormen also have uniforms that are a little bit more befitting of a property from its era. We believe that two worlds can coexist — that we can have a nice, elegant property and still have that fun aspect to it as well.” “There’s a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday [May 23] that the public is welcome to check out, then we officially open to everyone and kick off the summer on Friday, May 24,” says Baldanza. “No invitation, or passport, required.” ■ see more online @

‘Lucy’ on Stage at Harrah’s F By David Spatz • feedback@acweekly.com

or once, Ricky is finally going to let Lucy be in the show. One of the longest-running gags during the early years of television occurred weekly on the sitcom I Love Lucy, which aired on CBS between 1951 and 1956. On virtually every show, Lucy pleaded, begged and cajoled and even turned to tears when she asked her bandleader husband, Ricky, to her let her be in his nightclub show. But Lucy seemed to be lacking any discernable talent, so for as many times as Lucy asked, that’s how many times Ricky turned her down. I Love Lucy left the airwaves in 1957 after 181 episodes. But the series was so popular it’s never really been off the air. It’s merely lived on around the world in syndication, thereby introducing the series of two generations of audiences who weren’t even born when the show was originally in production. Now, fans of I Love Lucy will be transported back 60 years to see how the trail-blazing series was made when Harrah’s Resort presents the production of I Love Lucy Live On Stage in its Concert Venue July 17-Aug. 4. The show, which debuted to positive reviews in 2011 and has been touring nationally, is actually a show within a show. The audience will see what it was like in 1952, during the early years of television, when characters like Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball), her husband Ricky Ricardo (played by Ball’s real-life husband Desi Arnaz) and their best friends Ethel (Vivian Vance) and Fred Mertz (William Frawley) stepped in front of the cameras to make the show. In I Love Lucy Live On Stage, the audience will see the actors perform two episodes from the series and watch as the supporting cast of behind-the-scenes producers, directors, camera operators and recreate the process of making a TV show six decades ago. Critics who have praised the live stage show that’s coming to Atlantic City have pointed out how the show is filled with surprises, not the least of which is the look of the sets. Because the original series was filmed in black and white — color television was still a decade or more away — one of the biggest shocks the audience receives is when it sees Lucy and Ricky’s apartment, or the Copacabana nightclub, where Ricky performed, awash in color. The experience will not be unlike the only comparable show of its kind ever to play an Atlantic City casino. In 1978, when it was still the only game in town, Resorts Casino Hotel brought Jackie Gleason, Art Carney and the original cast of The Honeymooners to its Superstar Theatre to film several reunion shows that actually aired on television. During the tapings of those shows, the one post-show comment from virtually everyone

I Love Lucy Live On Stage features actress Sirena Irwin’s uncannily accurate portrayal of Lucy and actor Bill Mendieta as Cuban bandleader Ricky. They’re supported by a cast of other players, which includes a live band for the Copacabana scenes. To keep the audience comfortably trapped in the 1950s, the show pauses for “commercial” breaks, which become nostalgic production numbers on their own. A chorus of singers and dancers known as The Crystaltone Singers warble jingles familiar to TV viewers during that era, including pitch songs for Brylcreeme and Chevrolet. Ever since it opened in 1980, Harrah’s Resort has usually switched from a weekends-only headliner policy during the offseason months to present some kind of stage show during the summer. The types of show varied; they’ve tried magic, music and adaptations of Broadway productions, all with varying degrees of success. Because I Love Lucy has gained fans from young people who have discovered the series long after it left network television, this show has the potential to appeal to several demographics — those who watched the show when it was first on television, and others who became fans after watching it in re-runs. I Love Lucy Live On Stage is the first of at least two residency shows planned for Harrah’s this summer. Following Lucy into the 1,200-seat Concert Venue — and back for their third consecutive summer run — is the 10-man a capella singing group Straight No Chaser. The ensemble, one of the most unique vocal groups around, brings its Summer of Influence tour to Harrah’s from Aug. 21 to Sept. 1. n

hen it comes to the sport of boxing, there is nothing better than clarity. Truly knowing which fighter is the best, as opposed to falling victim to the Jedi Mind Tricks of media-made force feeding, sometimes is the hardest fight of all. Back in March, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer announced plans for a Jr. welterweight tournament, of sorts, to add more clarity to what undoubtedly is one of the deepest divisions in the sport. On Saturday night, May 18, Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall will play host to two of the very best fighters the division has to offer when talented IBF Jr. welterweight champion Lamont Peterson (31-1-1/16KOs), of Washington D.C., takes on the WBC interim super lightweight champion Lucas Matthysse (33-2/31KOs), of Argentina, in a scheduled 12-round bout of what is sure to be an action-packed war. The bout is to take place at the 141pound catch-weight, thus making it a nontitle affair, with the winner going on to face WBC/WBA champ, Philadelphia’s own, Danny Garcia, who just last month came off of an exciting 12-round unanimous decision win over Zab Judah at Brooklyn’s Barclay Center. To round it all off, the winner of that fight will go on to face England’s Amir Khan. Both fighters, very well known in boxing circles, have had road blocks in their ascension to being recognized as the very best in the division. The hard-hitting Matthysse has run through some of the best the division has had to offer, but is seen as being bit by the popularity bug in two controversial losses to better known fighters. Like a true warrior though, he has gotten back on his horse and has picked up where he had left off, galloping over every opposition placed in front of him.

Peterson’s star rose to significant heights after his December 2011 split-decision win over the heavily favored Khan, for Khan’s WBA and IBF belts. The train was derailed though when a positive urine result for synthetic testosterone came back leading up to their planned rematch. What had to add more insult in this twist of fate was it was Peterson himself who in fact made the request for drug testing for that ill-fated rematch. When the smoke all cleared, Peterson was stripped of his WBA strap, the one currently held by Garcia, but was allowed to keep his IBF belt on the strength of Peterson’s claim of the testosterone being used for therapeu-

tic reasons, and not as an enhancer. After a 14-month hiatus, Peterson came back with a vengeance, knocking out Kendall Holt in the 8th round in defense of that IBF belt. Like a proverbial monkey on one’s back, after the victory, rumors flew about yet another positive test result, but they were proven to be false. In Atlantic City, Peterson looks to show and prove that enhancers were never his intent, but legitimately proving his worth has always been the goal he and his team have always set. Both Peterson and Matthysse will be center stage to further lay their claim as the best in the division.

Also a part of this Showtime cable television double header, Devin Alexander (241/13KOs), of St. Louis, Miss., will make tfhe first defense of his IBF welterweight championship against mandatory contender Lee Purdy (20-3-1/13KOs) of the United Kingdom. Initially, Alexander was scheduled to fight another Englishman — Kell Brooks — in a highly anticipated match-up. However, after two cancellations because of injuries Brooks had sustained, and ultimately being seen that he wouldn’t be healed in enough time for this May 18 event, the Englishman was taken out of the mandatory position in all fairness to Alexander who has been eagerly waiting in the wings to get back in the ring. With one man’s misfortune turning into the next man’s good fortune, Purdy, the IBF welterweight champion, looks to take full advantage of this world-title opportunity. This eight-bout card is presented by Golden Boy Promotions, along with Caesars Atlantic City, Corona and AT&T. Tickets are available at the Boardwalk Hall box office or via Ticketmaster. Prices range from $250 down to $25, plus applicable taxes and service charges. If you can’t make it to Boardwalk Hall live, tune into Showtime Championship Boxing at 9pm (ET/PT) to watch the double main event, with the preliminary bouts being shown on Showtime Extreme at 7pm. Doors open at 3:30pm on Saturday, with the first fight starting immediately. ■

Banding Together Again The weekend-long Elephants for Autism Festival II returns to The Boneyard and Le Grand Fromage May 17-19. By Ray Schweibert • feedback@acweekly.com

hose who back the belief that everything happens for a reason probably have a pretty clear picture as to why Jerry Ryan is the man behind the Elephants for Autism Music Festival, returning for the second year Friday night through Sunday, May 17-19, on four stages at two neighboring Atlantic City sites. Ryan is passionate about fostering independent original music, having established the online site Elephant Talk Indie Music Magazine (elephanttalkindie.wordpress.com) and its affiliated concert series that is highlighted each August by the Elephant Talk Music Festival. He is also the father of an autistic child, Jeremy Ryan, and is devoted, along with Jeremy’s mother Kristina Smith, to making his son’s life as enriched and fulfilled as is possible. “I couldn’t even begin to explain my love for music, but my son can do it for me,” says Ryan. “When I hear him singing and playing piano, everything makes perfect sense on why I do the things I do. I have the opportunity to give parents and children hope and healing through music, and I feel truly blessed to be in this situation.” The Elephants for Autism Festival will feature more than 100 bands, an estimated 80 percent of which are new additions from last year’s successful debut. Among them is a six-person, southern New Jersey band called Out of the Beardspace (beardspace.com) that, according to Ryan, epitomizes the same sort of altruism that the Elephants for Autism Festival represents. “As well as being one of most talented bands I’ve ever seen, what makes [Out of the Beardspace] really great is their commitment to making this world a better place,” says Ryan. “They’re involved in countless grassroots organizations like this one, and have inspired me to do everything humanly possible to give back in every way.” Out of the Beardspace will play a double set Saturday (starting 8:30pm) at Le Grand Fromage. The band is one of 16 playing that venue on that night, each of which does primarily half-hour sets on alternating stages, one upstairs and one downstairs. Around the corner at The Boneyard, stages are set up inside and at an outdoor alleyway that also features a BBQ pit and kids activities going from noon Saturday (to 6:30pm) and Sunday (to 6pm). All proceeds from a $10 daily fee will go toward the Music Academy for Special Learners in Long Island, New York. Last year’s primary beneficiary was a music stu-

dio in Galloway Township run by Faith Ozan, who was forced to relocate in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. “[Faith] had to leave the area for a few months, but she told me that I should keep moving forward and we could always pick up where we left off when she returns to the area,” says Ryan. “After looking into a couple schools I went with the Academy for Special Learners [see speciallearnerpiano. com] after speaking to [Academy president] Maria Scuderi LaMon over the phone. I really felt her heart and passion were parallel to mine, and that she could really do the most with these children and deserved this opportunity.” The festival will also have a two-disc compilation on sale to help the cause. The CD features 41 independent bands from all across the U.S. and Canada. “[The CD] took me over a year and a half to finish but it was well worth the wait,” says Ryan. “I usually spend countless hours over many months making these festivals a reality. I owe a lot to Mike Messina [owner of Le Grand Fromage] and Tony Stolfo [owner of The Boneyard], who have been most supportive in providing me a venue to showcase the bands, and all the bands themselves are sacrificing their time and money to play this event and share my vision. Dave Bailey, my graphic designer, has always been there when I need him, and of course all the people attending the event have been crucial to success since we donate the door sales in order to make this work. “There have been a lot of people who needed to come together to make this happen. I’m very proud to call them all my friends.” ■

he 20th anniversary of any successful business is always a cause worthy for celebration. Nowhere is this more so than in the restaurant industry, where a start-up failure rate of more than 80 percent menacingly hovers over would-be operators. In the case of Linwood’s La Pizzatega — owned by Glen and Patty McCauley — this momentous occasion was made even more significant by a recent family ordeal. More on that in a bit. Glen, native to Scotch Plains, an upscale Union county community, began his culinary career at age 14 at a restaurant called Conco D’Oro in neighboring Plainfield. After spending time working at the Mountainside Inn in Clifton, he moved south and opened what Patty describes as a “1,000 square foot, seven table” restaurant in the new Linwood Greene complex on May 15, 1993. Having actually wanted a larger unit next door — initially the home of a design business — Glen snapped up the neighboring space when that venture failed to pan out. This allowed for the current environs, with seating for 70 patrons plus a rear party room capable of accommodating close to 20 more. Patty calls it “a homey, family restaurant, comfortable and not designer anything.” And while Glen’s last name may begin with ‘Mc,’ Patty tells us that her husband considers himself to be “100 percent Italian” courtesy of his maternal Neapolitan background. This is immediately reflected in the cuisine, particularly Glen’s house specialty, a unique pasta called involtini, warranting its own separate section on the bill of fare. Filled with a mozzarella/ricotta mix, it may be augmented with options like prosciutto, spinach, crab meat or vegetables and is sauced customer specification. Other popular dinner specialties include homemade fettucine with shrimp, scallops and jumbo crab in a spicy rosa sauce, grilled filet mignon with either cheese involtini or shrimp scampi and a stuffed eggplant francaise with shrimp, lump crab and spinach over choice of pasta. Casual offerings are plentiful at La Pizzatega with all the classic elements of Italian-American cuisine — pies, stromboli, calzone, panzarotti, steaks, burgers and

subs. One of those is an unusual menu item paying particular homage to Glen’s north Jersey heritage: the Italian hot dog. Popularized in Newark, it’s an ethnicallyinspired East Coast retort to the ingredientladen, Chicago-style sandwich. Twin franks, or sausage, if you prefer, are stuffed into an Italian bread pocket laden with fresh potatoes, onions and roasted peppers. Of late, Glen — a lookalike for celeb chef Michael Symon — has been experimenting with organic soups, like a classic northern Italian combo of greens, sausage and beans, seafood gumbo or a spinach egg drop with

carrots and chicken broth. The couple actually met at the restaurant 14 years ago, when Egg Harbor Township resident Patty arrived to fill in for a friend making deliveries. A workplace romance blossomed and the couple married in three years. Son Joey arrived a year later and has virtually grown up at the restaurant, so much that his mother says of him: “He’s an old soul.” The family recently dealt with one of life’s most agonizing issues; Patty underwent an extensive course of treatment for breast cancer at Philadelphia’s Fox Chase Cancer Center. Despite the stress of running a business and transporting her for treatment, Glen “never missed a day of work or a baseball game or any kind of sport with our son,” says Patty. “He’s a phenomenal cook, but a better father.” Customers were also supportive of the family. “The community wrapped their arms around us,” adds Patty. That includes a crew of incredibly loyal regulars, some of whom eat at La Pizzatega each and every day. One in particular, Mitzi Stein, visits so frequently — every night at 4pm promptly — that a booth has been permanently memorialized with her name. By the time this column publishes, a surprise 20th anniversary party for Glen, staged by Patty, her staff and friends, will have gone off at 7pm Tuesday evening. uch like the versatile D.L. Hughley, George Lopez always lands on his feet. Shortly after Lopez’s self-produced sitcom George Lopez ended on ABC, only to be resurrected by Nick At Night and syndication, the quick-witted comic of the show’s title was tabbed to host the underheralded late-night talk show Lopez Tonight on TBS. A year and a half after the chat show ended, Lopez announced that he would star in the FX sitcom, Saint George, in which he plays a divorced dad. Lopez, 52, who is out on the road rendering stand-up, recently called Atlantic City Weekly from Los Angeles to discuss raising a teenage daughter and how fragmented the world of comedy has become. He also reveals what classic sitcom inspired the dialogue in his ABC vehicle. Lopez appears at the Borgata Event Center on Saturday, May 18. Seth Meyers just scored the gig as host of NBC’s Late Night. What do you miss about your chat show? I miss how much fun we had on the show. It was a great time and a great responsibility. I think what I did was different than what the others on late night did.

“I had no desk. We would stand on chairs. We actually had fun.” What separated you from the pack is that you actually listened to the guest and went on interesting tangents with guests as opposed to just going from one question to the next. Exactly. It’s funny you say that because when I was getting ready to do the show I asked someone if I should take some classes, maybe study interviewing. I was told, ‘no, you’re a curious guy, you listen. If you’re curious, you listen ... you’ll be all right.’ I had no desk. We would stand on chairs. We actually had fun. Fun and television are often mutually exclusive terms. Many of those running the shows don’t have humor backgrounds. Tell me about it. You have these executives, who micromanage the show and they never told a joke or arranged a joke or know anything about being funny. That kind of stuff derails you.

But you’re willing to give another sitcom a whirl. Yes. It’s with FX. I think they get it. Louis C.K. has had the chance to do what he wants and I think it’ll be that way for me. The difference between many of the classic and contemporary sitcoms is that there was great conflict with the former. You’ll have plenty of conflict in this show. My character is divorced, who was married to a blonde woman, a very beautiful girl. Even though we break up, she expects my character to help raise the child and be in constant contact with her. That’s not the way it is with Latinos. When we divorce, we hardly see who we divorced. The co-parenting stuff is going to be really funny. It’ll help because it’s based on reality. You’re divorced and you have a teenage daughter. That’s part of what I’ll talk about when I come to town. I’ll talk about my daughter. I’ll talk about getting older. I talk about how

That’s quite a contrast from your childhood. Your parents abandoned you and danger was ubiquitous. I had a very challenging childhood. It’s very different from what my daughter experiences. But you know what? I thought there was no value in my childhood, but I was wrong. It made me who I am. I wouldn’t trade that experience for anything. That’s my currency today. I remember lying about things like if I ate or not. I would tell people I ate dinner when I didn’t. It was hard but it helped shape me as a comedian. I’ll never forget growing up during the ’70s. What a different era. Look at footage of Richard Pryor and George Carlin shows. They each had diverse crowds. However, today, you go to a Mike Epps show and it’s almost all African-American. You draw mostly Latinos and Louis C.K. attracts Caucasians. Why is it so fragmented? It was different then. There was more of a mix back in the day. I think comics are a bit more ethnic than they were back then. You have the Internet now, so you can see what you like. I think people back in the ’70s would be more apt to just go out and check someone out. I don’t think that’s so today. I think that’s why it’s so fragmented today. In some ways the ’70s were cooler than now. And the sitcoms were amazing. What sitcom from that era had the biggest impact on you? There were several but one that had a huge impact on me and my ABC sitcom was Sanford and Son. I would lock myself into a room for hours and watch how the characters from Sanford and Son would hurl insults at each other. I would take that interaction and work it into my show with my sitcom wife. I owe all of that to Sanford and Son. But that was back before the PC police arrived. Can you bring it with old-school humor with your new show? I’m going to try to be the first rung of the non-PC ladder with this show. I’m going to have fun dealing with gluten-free kids, coparenting and the holidays. It’ll be no-holds barred, just like my stand-up. ■ see more online @

of The Great Gatsby that starred Robert Redford, Sam Waterston, Mia Farrow and Bruce Dern. Tom, as played by Dern, was a brutal, ugly man — a one-dimensional villain. In Luhrmann’s interpretation, Tom is more interesting, smarter and polished. He even really cares about his current fling, a garage mechanic’s wife (Isla Fisher). You understand why Daisy married Tom. Gatsby’s heart is so befuddled that, despite his brilliant understanding of how the world works, he can’t see clearly when it comes to her. Hence, Nick’s dilemma: He knows Daisy well enough to suspect that despite Gatsby’s five-year plan to make his life comfortable enough to match Daisy’s needs, he will ultimately fail in his quest. DiCaprio is terrific in the title role, less a golden boy than Redford was, which works well. We see his desperation and identify with it. Daisy, with her innate selfishness, is a tougher character to make even slightly sympathetic, and while one feels she isn’t nearly as shrill as Farrow was, Mulligan can’t find a way to get past Daisy’s shallow façade. Edgerton brings more depth as noted earlier, and Maguire is OK as Nick, but he can’t come close to matching Waterston’s brilliance in the role. Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby is beautiful to watch, but shallow by design, matching Daisy’s fickle heart and reflecting the emotionally bereft era of the setting. n

Wray was basically a one-man coaching staff, compared to Chip Kelly of the Eagles who will have 21 assistants for the 2013 season. At Bader Field, Wray introduced his players to new rules planned for the 1933 season. The biggest change was allowing forward passes from anywhere behind the line of scrimmage. Previously, a quarterback had to be five yards behind the line to attempt a pass. Hash marks were introduced as a means of spotting the ball on the field and goal posts were placed on the goal line. During their three weeks in Atlantic City, the Eagles came together as a team. With quarterback Red Kirkman, running back Swede Hanson and receiver Joe Carter, the Eagles went 6-1 in the preseason, defeating such opponents as the Clifton Wessingtons, Orange Tornadoes and the Staten Island Stapletons. That early success proved to be a mirage when the regular season began with a 56-0 loss to the New York Giants on Oct. 15. The Eagles finished their inaugural season with a record of 3-5-1. Bell had the Eagles return to Atlantic City for training camp in August 1934 that was described in a local newspaper as “a 17-day training siege at Bader Field.” In a change of pace, he had the team practice on the beach near his rented mansion on Atlantic Avenue in Ventnor during his honeymoon. Bell even offered lodging in his mansion to his players, according to On Any Given Sunday. As a newlywed, Bell still had football on his mind, as Lyons recounts in an anecdote in his book. Bell and his wife, Frances, were taking an evening stroll on the beach in Ventnor, when she remarked: “Look at the moon, Bert. Isn’t it romantic?” “Yeah,” he replied, “If only I had a punter who could kick that high.” After breaking camp, the Eagles suffered another losing season in 1934, finishing in a tie for third place with a 4-7 record. In 1935, the Eagles ended their Jersey Shore experiment and trained in Pennsylvania. Bader Field, though, would return to the athletic spotlight when the New York Yankees held spring training there in 1944 and 1945 because of travel restrictions imposed by Major League Baseball during World War II. n

ustralian director Baz Luhrmann has been, in his own way, the Michael Bay of character-driven drama. His mantra of “go big or go home” has been there since he made his delightful debut with Strictly Ballroom, followed by his modern dress Romeo + Juliet, his slightly insane musical Moulin Rouge!, his homeland western Australia and now his lavish 3D take on the classic F. Scott Fitzgerald novel The Great Gatsby. The 3D is not necessary, but it does push the incredible visual canvas that serves as the backdrop to the forefront of the story. If you’re going to care about your rich lifestyle more than your emotional wealth, these eyepopping landscapes help your argument. That said, the whole point of The Great Gatsby is that the mysterious Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio), whose insanely wild parties are the talk of Long Island in the summer of 1922, cares nothing about possessions. His persona is simply a lure to gain the attention of the woman he loved and lost, Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan). Gatsby will do anything to win Daisy back and this includes befriending his working stiff neighbor, Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire), who is crucial to Gatsby’s plans since Daisy is Nick’s cousin. Carraway is the narrator of this passion play, as well as a participant. He admires Gatsby, although he understands that his new friend’s obsession with his lost love is more likely to end in tragedy than triumph. Daisy is married to the old-money playboy Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton) who has been unfaithful to his wife carelessly, as part of the entitlement of his position of power. It is with Tom that director and co-writer Luhrmann deviates from the 1974 version

n its early years of operation, Bader Field had its share of planes taking off and landing, but the former Atlantic City airport had a different type of touchdown on Sept. 11, 1933. Nearly 40 participants took the field as the Philadelphia Eagles kicked off the first training camp in the team’s history under the scrutiny of Coach Lud Wray and owner Bert Bell. “The practice was stiff and grueling,” the Atlantic City Daily Press reported as the players went through a series of calisthenics and conditioning drills before honing their football skills. “For several hours,” the report added, “the players disported themselves at Bader Field, where in shorts and natty blouses, the lads went through the normal setting-up exercises to limber dormant muscles and to oil the sleeping sinews.” Eagles management had moved quickly to assemble a team after joining the National Football League on July 8, 1933. In the midst of the Great Depression, the team took its name from the bird that was the symbol of the National Recovery Administration. Bell, a native Philadelphian who played quarterback at the University of Pennsylvania and later coached at his alma mater, looked east when it came time to select a training camp site. “Bert had an affinity for the Shore. He really enjoyed it down there,” said Robert S. Lyons, author of On Any Given Sunday: A Life of Bert Bell. Atlantic City had special meaning for Bell, who proposed to his wife, Frances, via telephone in the city while she was performing as an actress in Chicago. The couple honeymooned in Ventnor in 1934 and later had a summer home on South Union Avenue in Margate. Bringing his players to Atlantic City was a way to promote team unity as he and Wray tried to assemble a competitive squad. “Pro football was pretty informal back then. Training camp was catch as catch can,” said Ray Didinger, co-author with Lyons of The Eagles Encyclopedia. The NFL of 1933 was markedly different from today’s game. The regular season was just nine games and roster sizes were limited to 20 players, which allowed owners to control costs in a difficult economic time. As a result, athletes had to be versatile and played both offense and defense. Padding was light and helmets were still optional and would not become mandatory until 1943.
