or years Atlantic City’s Bader Field was well known as America’s first official airport. More recently it has served as home to a number of unique concerts and community events, and this Saturday, June 1, will be among the most impassioned. Wiser Charitable Enterprises, Inc. will present VetRock 2013 — an all-day outdoor festival of music, food, arts-and-crafts, and a celebration of those who have served in the United States military. It is particularly designed to honor Vietnam Veterans with the “welcome home they never received.” The event will include a keynote address by Lt. Col. Oliver North, it will be emceed by Joe Piscopo (who will also perform with his band), and will feature live music by several nationally and regionally known bands, including co-headliners Mark Farner (founder and former lead vocalist/guitarist of Grand Funk Railroad) and his band, Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels, the Buckinghams, the Soul Survivors and the Trammps. Local bands performing include Jeremiah Hunter, the Bob Sterling Band, Seven Stone and Gypsy Asylum. The show will go on rain or shine. It is $25 per person and free for kids under age 10. It starts at 10am at Bader Field. All proceeds benefit Vietnam Veterans through Fisher House Foundation, Vineland Veterans Home, and Homeless Vietnam Veterans Fund through event producer Wiser Charitable Enterprises. Mike Merlino, the founder and president of Wiser Charitable Enterprises, Inc., cohosts with Commander Bill Butler the Veterans Matter Radio Show, which airs on WPG TalkRadio 1450AM every Saturday from 11am-1pm. Go to wisercharitable.org for tickets and more information.
Appel Farm Arts & Music Festival By Nadya Rivera
T
he weather is finally warming up and that means it is festival season. With over 30 fairs and festivals taking place in New Jersey in the coming months of June and July alone, the Appel Farm Arts & Music Festival has been “acclaimed as one of the best NJ festivals.” This festival takes place in Elmer, N.J., every year and celebrates cycling, crafts, music and the performing arts. Programs include the Salem County Cycling Trip for riders, the Crafts Fair showcasing the works of over 50 artisans, performances from popular contemporary music artists and the Children’s Village event. The Children’s Village event allows the entire family to lay back and enjoy performances of puppet theatre, magicians, jugglers and storytellers. There are plenty of activities for everyone. Kids can create their own arts and craft pieces while adults 21 and over can enjoy specialty beers and award-winning local wine at the Festival Beer & Wine tent. No festival would be complete without food— vegetarian and ethnic food choices as well as festival favorites—hamburgers and funnel cakes will be available for purchase. The picky eaters are welcomed to bring their own picnic baskets. The festival takes place on Saturday, June 1 from 11:30am to 8pm. Tickets are $45 for adults and $40 for seniors, students and military and may be purchased at appelfarm.org. Proceeds benefit the Appel Farm’s summer arts camp scholarship program and community outreach residencies in public schools.

New Light Show at Boardwalk Hall By Ray Schweibert
T
he third and latest 3-D light-and-sound show assembled by the Montreal-based Moment Factory made its debut Saturday, May 25, on the exterior of Boardwalk Hall. The show, called Boardwalk Beat, featured a dance party with live music, confetti cannons, the Boardwalk Beat Dancers, and the Boardwalk Beat grand viewing at 9pm on the Boardwalk in front of Kennedy Plaza. The show is a collaboration between the Atlantic City Alliance (ACA) and the Casino Reinvestment Authority (CRDA). It uses sophisticated 3D projections to illuminate the exterior of Boardwalk Hall and is presented with an original musical score. The Moment Factory has also partnered with such clients as Disney, Jay Z, Madonna, Cirque du Soleil and Microsoft, and has completed more than 300 projects. Boardwalk Beat will run every half hour from 8-11pm nightly from now through the end of summer. Replacing its forerunner Duality, Boardwalk Beat “takes a foot-tapping, heart-thumping journey through eight decades of musical history including ’20s Rag Time, ’30s Cotton Club, ’40s Broadway Musicals, ’60s Surf Music, ’70s Disco, ’80s Pop and ‘90s Hard Rock. Historic Boardwalk Hall is magically transformed into a gigantic whimsical jukebox hopping randomly from one musical era to another.” The show is also being billed as an engaging celebration of the unheralded history of music in Atlantic City, which has always been a musical hub with many world famous artists launching their tours here. “We transformed the whole building into a time machine — a giant jukebox where we go from the ’20s and ’30s through the ’80s and ’90s,” says Tarik Mikou, one of the Moment Factory’s lead multimedia directors.

The Social Concert Series is also offering audiences an additional two concerts free of charge. American singer-songwriter ZZ Ward will perform on June 14 and on June 21, Los Angeles-based band Capital Cities will bring their pop-rock style to the stage. The series follows Revel’s spring revamping of The Social’s weekly line-up, which started in April with a Thursday night comedy series, a Sunday talent show and a Monday night Binglo event. All that Glitters is Haven
Golden Nugget’s new 12,000-square-foot subterranean nightclub debuted to much awe and fanfare over Memorial Day weekend. By Ray Schweibert • feedback@acweekly.com

or most guests of Golden Nugget over Memorial Day weekend, the first thing to strike the eye when driving onto the property was probably owner Tilman Fertitta’s 164-foot tri-deck superyacht Boardwalk parked at Farley State Marina. That’s a tough spectacle to top, but Fertitta was on site, along with hundreds of primarily young-adult revelers hungry to savor the latest in cutting-edge nightlife options, for Golden Nugget’s unveiling of Haven — a stunning underground nightclub that’s being billed as the finishing touch on a dramatic, two-year property-wide overhaul. Fertitta, CEO of the Houston-based Landry’s Restaurants, purchased the former Trump Marina in May 2011 and rebranded it Golden Nugget, his third casinohotel under that brand. Haven represents the final major-stage renovation, converting what for years was a Trump Marina bus terminal into the 12,000-square-foot stateof-the-art nightclub. “Tilman is a brilliant innovator when it comes to dining, gaming, entertainment and hospitality,” says Golden Nugget A.C. vice president of entertainment and nightlife Gregg Coyle. “After his modernizing renovation of the Golden Nugget, Haven is the finishing touch — the ultimate nightlife sanctuary — which is sure to revolutionize the Atlantic City party scene.” Haven has a capacity for about 700 people under ordinary circumstances, but was modified a bit to accommodate a few more during the holiday weekend’s grand opening, which featured pop sensation Ke$ha (who also performed two sold-out shows with popular Miami rapper Pitbull at The Grand concert venue at Golden Nugget) hosting opening festivities May 25 and 26. Additionally, Australian-born performer Havana Brown — a past tour DJ for such major pop-star presences as Lady Gaga,
facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly
Rihanna and Enrique Iglesias — staffed the new Function One sound system and DJ’d for guests Friday and Saturday night. Internationally known DJs and pop stars will be regular attractions at the new nightclub, according to a media release. Guests enter Haven from the casino floor, descending via two long escalators. A DJ booth is situated in front of a large LED video wall, and state-of-the-art lighting systems and special effects set the stage for the performance artists and sexy Haven dancers to engage and entertain the crowd. The main dance floor is sited at the center of the room, surrounded by 25 leather banquettes that offer signature table service and VIP bottle service. There are also two full-service bars, two VIP entrances, a special valet-parking entrance that leads directly to the club, and kiosks that double as social media-based photo booths. What also sets Haven apart from other A.C. nightclubs is a covered outdoor area called The Veranda that offers guests a more subdued spot to socialize and interact. The Veranda includes two large fire pits surrounded by comfortable lounge seating, slot machines, roulette, blackjack and gaming tables, and even a ladies lounge with jeweled walls and royal purple leather seats. “We’re excited to bring a new type of nightlife experience to Atlantic City,” says Coyle. “It is what the contemporary nightclub customer expects with some exciting ‘wow’ factors that, along with outstanding service, deliver a fun and memorable experience — which is why club-goers come to Atlantic City.” For a photo gallery of the grand opening of Haven, visit acweekly.com. ■

Memories Is Back By Jerry Blavat • feedback@acweekly.com
Jerry ‘The Geator’ Blavat
W
ow! Amazing! Unbelievable! Beautiful! Never thought it could be done. That’s what people are saying after visiting the brand new Memories in Margate. Mother Nature may not have been so agreeable to us, and the first two days might have been the coldest and dampest Memorial Day weekends in anyone’s memory. But it did not stop the partying people. And they came. The ever popular Three Amigos have returned — Justin, Anthony, Sean, along with the prettiest ladies in town. Yes, the Canusos, the Spays, the O’Learys, Carl Poplar and his lovely Peggy were a part of the magic, as was a surprise visit from my pal Larry Mullin and the folks from the Borgata. Even Bernie Dillon was in town, as was Lisa Gaudio, daughter of Bob Gaudio, with hubby Jimmy Kazanjian. The Admiral and his lovely wife, Linda. The Cascias — Jackie and her Cascia husband. My man Freddie Amendolia. Butch and Vanessa. Even Patricia Hill, aka Lady Gaga, and my favorite Cherokee, Lily from Philly, showed up. The list went on and on. And people are raving about the fact that Peter McAndrews, who owns some of the most talked-about restaurants in Philadelphia and was prominent on Anthony Bourdain’s Travel Channel show recently, is now serving his famous sandwiches from the award-winning Paesano’s sandwich shop in Philadelphia. And Sundays at 2 pm, it’s Memories Italian style with the sounds of Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Bobby Darin, and more. There is no menu, just traditional home style Italian food the way you remember growing up. Yep, it’s going to be a fabulous summer. And remember, we now open up our doors
Wednesday through Sunday with our Happy hour starting at 4, then we go live Fridays and Saturdays on KOOL 98.3. Nothing but stars. See you there — now, let’s ask the Geator. Is Memories in Margate the old Gable’s of Margate? — Eddie Gamble, Philadelphia No, Memories is the old Elbo Room, and that’s what it was when I purchased it in 1972. Gable’s was at 9300 Amherst, now Tomatoe’s. (Thanks to Connie for that info) Do you remember “950 sockaroos”? I watched the Philly Bandstand every day when it was such a big sensation. What a show. — Pat, Fort Lauderdale, Fla. 950 was the dial setting of WPEN, and The 950 Club was a radio show on WPEN hosted by Joe Grady and Ed Hurst before Bandstand went on TV. “950 sockaroo” is how the show was introduced. There’s a song you’ve been playing that sounds like “plastic dreamer . . . it’s just one of those things you put down to experience.” Can’t tell if the singer is male or female, almost sounds like a young Michael Jackson. Artist and song please? Many thanks — Louis V. Natale, Cinnaminson The song is “Sad Sweet Dreamer,” which reached No. 1 in England in 1974. It was by a British group called Sweet Sensation, whose lead singer, Marcel King, sang falsetto just like MJ. He was 16 years old when the song was recorded, the youngest member of the group. n

Participating in the event are members of various garden clubs, as well as a handful of non-members who have an interest in flowers. Last year, there were approximately 75 entries in the artistic division and 23 participants in the children’s category. A similar outcome is expected this year. Already, there are over 300 submissions in the horticulture division.
In addition to the Flower Show, which will be held at the Ocean City Music Pier, there will be a Trade Fair in the Pavilion of the Music Pier, where vendors will be selling various plants, including flowers and plants for the garden. The beauty of flowers makes people feel happy, and that is why Shaw says everyone should come out to the event. Flower show hours are 2-9pm on Fri., May 31; 10am-9pm on Sat., June 1; and 10am-4pm on Sun., June 2. Entry is free, however visitors may leave a voluntary donation to help support the show. he 41st-annual Ocean City Flower Show, staged by the Garden Club of Ocean City, comes to town on May 31-June 2 bringing a wide display of floral arrangements for the community to see. More than 3,000 people are expected to attend the show, according to committee chairwoman Joan Shaw. Shaw has been involved with the event since 2002. Visitors will enjoy strolling through the exhibits to see how the arrangements interpret this year’s theme, “Let’s Go to the Movies.” Each of the show’s classes will reflect this theme, with categories including “Class 1 Novice My Fair Lady,” “Class 3 Expressive Cleopatra,” and the Junior/ Children’s “Class 10 The Wizard of Oz” — among others. “The classes in the artistic division all use a theme from one of the movies to develop a design related to a flower arranging technique, such as a tea tray, which this year should relate to The Great Gatsby or a shadow box mass arrangement, which will relate to either the movie Some Like It Hot or Dr. Zhivago,” says Shaw. New this year is the “Class 8 Underwater” artistic division: “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea,” which includes floral arrangements done entirely underwater. “Class 9” is an “Arts and Crafts Celebration of the Movies,” in which participants use a medium other than flowers to interpret the theme of the show. The three categories include Needlepoint, Cross-Stitch, and Stitched Mixed Media. Flower choices used in the artistic division are chosen by each of the

Deana Sings Dino
Deana Martin sings the songs of her father’s era at Caesars Friday night for a Schultz-Hill Foundation benefit concert. By David J. Spatz • feedback@acweekly.com

MAY 30 - JUNE 5, 2013 • ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY
W
hen Deana Martin steps onto the stage Friday night to sing from her dad’s songbook, she’ll be following in some very famous footsteps separated by 50 years and just a few hundred feet. The daughter of the late crooner Dean Martin will be performing at Caesars Atlantic City, just a toss of a shot glass from where her father and his Rat Pack pallies like Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. once performed at the legendary and longgone 500 Club. Headlining a fundraising concert for the Schultz-Hill Foundation, a local non-profit organization, which supports the arts, history and education in southern New Jersey, Martin says her show — titled “Deana Sings Dino” — will be a romp into America’s pop music past for both the audience and herself. Songs she’ll perform that were hits for her dad include “Memories Are Made of This,” “Volare” and “Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime.” She’ll even get the audience to help her out by turning the Italian restaurant and pizza joint mainstay “That’s Amore” into a sing-along. Martin sees the show as more than just a 90-minute nostalgic waltz down Memory Lane. “It is so important for us to keep this music alive, and it’s important for everybody to keep this going,” the 60-something Martin tells Atlantic City Weekly. Although her father’s material makes up the majority of her set list, Martin will also send a musical valentine to her dad’s famous buddies by singing from the Sinatra and Davis song books as well.
facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly
Although her father’s material makes up the majority of her set list, Martin will also send a musical valentine to her dad’s famous buddies by singing from the Sinatra and Davis song books as well. “It’s such a treat for me to sing not only the songs of my father, but also ‘Uncle Frank’ and ‘Uncle Sammy,’” which is how she referred to Sinatra and Davis as a kid growing up in Beverly Hills. Deana Martin isn’t an entertainer who’s simply cashing in later in life on her father’s legend. She broke into the same business nearly 50 years ago when she made her television debut on The Dean Martin Show and became a frequent performer on the weekly program. Martin was professionally trained as an actress in Great Britain and amassed an impressive array of theatrical credits, everything from stage classics like Romeo & Juliet, The Taming of the Shrew and Hamlet — to contemporary plays like Six Rms Riv Vu, A Shot In the Dark and The Tunnel of Love. But music was always in her blood — how could it not be when you’re Dean Martin’s
daughter? — and she always seemed to gravitate back toward singing. But initially, Martin marched to her own beat and wasn’t interested in singing the types of songs her dad and his buddies performed. “The first songs I recorded back in the 1960s were country,” she recalls during a recent chat from Branson, Mo., where she lives part of the year. “And then I moved on and got a rock ‘n roll band, because I grew up loving The Beatles, the Rolling Stones and, of course, Elvis [Presley].” She admits that was a difficult musical period for her dad because of the vast and far-reaching influence the British artists had on young people. “I know it was tough for dad when The Beatles and Elvis came in, because it became a whole different musical era,” she says. But ol’ Dino not only knew how to take a musical punch, he also knew how to throw one back. In 1964, Martin knocked the Fab
Four’s recording of “A Hard Day’s Night” out of the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with his recording of “Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime.” “He was thrilled,” Deana Martin says with unabashed pride. Her dad had an inkling that his breezy ballad was going to be a hit. Not long before it peaked at No. 1, he told Deana’s brother, the late Dean Paul Martin, that he was “gonna knock your pallies off the charts.” While her dad wasn’t exactly a fan of rock ‘n roll — actually, he detested it — he didn’t have any objections when his son Dean Paul or his daughter began singing it. (Dean Paul was part of the boy band trio Dino, Desi & Billy; Desi was Desi Arnaz IV, the son of Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball. They had a five-year run between 1964 and 1969 and charted several Top 40 hits. Dean Paul Martin, who ultimately became a pilot in the California Air National Guard, died in 1987 when his F-4 Phantom jet crashed during a snowstorm.) But Deana and Dean Paul’s father always let them express themselves artistically and supported them even though he wasn’t a fan of their music. “My dad always wanted us to be happy and do what we wanted to do,” she remembers. “He wanted us to work, of course. There was a very strong work ethic in our house. We all saw how devoted he was to his career, and he always encouraged us.” For her program Friday at Caesars, Martin will be supported by an 18-piece orchestra complete with a string section. Unlike other artists, who often use five- or six-piece bands and supplement the sound by using pre-recorded backing tracks, Martin’s show will be 100-percent live. “It’s such a treat for me when I’m standing on a stage with all the horns blaring behind me,” she says. “What’s so much fun about this is that you have 18 musicians on stage, and they’ve all brought their days into the show with them, just like I have. It’s so much better than coming in with [a small band] and using tracks. Sometimes, I may want the tempo of a song to be a little faster or a little slower, and you can’t do that with tracks.” While she’ll be singing her dad’s songs, she won’t be using his original arrangements. Charlie Calello, an arranger who’s worked with everyone from Barbra Streisand to Neil Diamond to Engelbert Humperdinck — and who was part of the Four Lovers vocal group with Frankie Valli before they became the Four Seasons — has freshened up Martin’s arrangements. “They’re all based on my dad’s arrangements, just updated,” she says. ■ see more online @

EVENT INFO band], there’s tons of fresh ideas flowing, tons of new material, and we’re opening a lot of the songs up in different ways than we ever had before. The chemistry has just solidified year by year by year, but I think taking a year off did us good. Everybody’s recharged and excited to be back out on the road. The band really sounds amazing right now, and the chemistry with Jorgen in the band is really quite incredible. We’re very proud of where we are.
Mule Kicks Into HOB
Formed and fronted by guitar master Warren Haynes nearly 20 years ago, jam band Gov’t Mule plays House of Blues as part of its ‘Prepare to Shout!’ tour. By Ray Schweibert • feedback@acweekly.com

MAY 30 - JUNE 5, 2013 • ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY
T
wo groups that immediately spring to mind when the subject is classic jam bands are the Grateful Dead and the Allman Brothers Band, and Warren Haynes has factored prominently into both. Play the same word-association game with “government mule” and the consummate workhorse is likely to manifest, and that, too, fits Haynes flawlessly. Haynes brings the blues-fueled jam band he formed in 1994 with late bassist Allen Woody, Gov’t Mule, to the House of Blues Saturday night, June 1. The band consists of Haynes as lead vocalist and guitarist (and principal songwriter), drummer and original Mule member Matt Abts, keyboardist and multi-instrumentalist Danny Louis and bassist Jorgen Carlsson. Louis has been with the band since 2002 and Carlsson joined in 2008. The A.C. gig is the third official stop on the Prepare to Shout! Tour, named after the band’s forthcoming 16th album Shout! due to be released in September. It is also the third of seven straight nights Mule performs in a different city, beginning May 30 in Portland, Maine. It takes a day off before resuming with the ninth annual Mountain Jam in Hunter Mountain, N.Y., on June 9, and from late June through mid-July tours around Europe starting in Vitoria, Spain (June 29). That barely scratches the surface of what Haynes has on his plate this summer, though. On June 18 in Pittsburgh he starts a solo project called the Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration (Haynes has, and still does, perform occasionally with most of the surviving members of the Grateful

Dead), which has two sets of dates (June 18-26, and July 30-Aug. 4) in between Gov’t Mule gigs, and celebrates the music of Garcia with the Pittsburgh Symphony and six other orchestras in eight cities. Then, on Aug. 16, Haynes rejoins the Allman Brothers (as their co-lead guitarist, an Allmans tradition, with fellow virtuoso Derek Trucks, nephew of original Allmans drummer Butch Trucks) for a 14-gig tour that ends Sept. 7. That’s a schedule that would wear down the average 20-something. Haynes, who spoke with Atlantic City Weekly by phone from his West Chester, N.Y., home, turned 53 last month. What can your fans in Atlantic City expect to hear? Does Gov’t Mule span the gamut of several years from show to show? We do a different show every night. As an example, if we do three nights in a certain city, we don’t repeat anything over those three nights. Whatever city we’re returning to we consult a log that we keep of every show we’ve every played, and we make sure — for example when we come to Atlantic City — that it will be a completely different set list from the last time we were in Atlantic City, and probably the time before
that as well. Over the course of a tour we’ll play well over 100 different songs. Will you be doing a lot of jamming and improvising in the midst of most songs? Some of the songs open themselves up to improvisation more than others. It’s kind of a nice balance between the more structured songs and the more improv-oriented songs. You know, every night, regardless of the songs chosen for the set list, you’ll see quite a variety of different directions that Gov’t Mule explores, and has explored over the past 19 years. You and Matt have been with the band in its entirety (Haynes and Woody, who passed away in 2000, were Allman Brothers members when that band reformed in 1989, creating Mule in 1994 as a sort of side project), Danny started in 2002 and Jorgen in 2008 – is this lineup as tight as it’s going to get or do you still see it evolving? It’s growing all the time and changing all the time. We’re not happy with just keeping things where they were or where they are, we’re always looking to explore, and one of the things we’re excited about now is that, after the band took a year off [Haynes toured much of 2011 and 2012 with his solo
I saw you with the Allmans (Nov. 2010) in A.C., and while I knew your reputation as a great guitarist I didn’t know you could play slide guitar that well. When did you start playing slide guitar? I started playing slide guitar I guess when I was around 14 or 15, and then in my early 20s I kind of realized that it was a dying art and not enough people were doing it. I had some opportunities to explore it more and more, and try to search for my own voice on slide guitar, which I do by playing in standard tuning. Most people play [slide] in open tuning — like an open E or an open G — but playing in standard tuning kind of gives me a little bit of my own voice because people aren’t as used to hearing that, and it allows me to not have to transpose ideas from regular guitar to slide guitar. Duane Allman (who died in 1971) was known as one of the best slide guitarists ever. How much of an influence did he have on you? Duane Allman was a big influence on my guitar playing and slide guitar playing, as were Lowell George, Ry Cooder, David Lindley and others. All were major influences on me as a slide player. But I think, as with any instrument, it really helps to be influenced by instruments other than the one you’re playing. I’ve really spent decades listening to saxophone players, trumpet players, singers, and of course I started out as a singer and have an intimate connection with singers in general. But I think it’s important for musicians to listen to instruments other than their own and find influence there. I see on your schedule the band is doing a series of gigs in Europe (17 shows in 17 different cities) — have you done that before and do you have a pretty good fan base overseas? Yeah, we’ve been doing more and more touring in Europe. I guess we started about six years ago. I’ve found a lot of the European markets to be wonderful audiences for Gov’t Mule and it seems to be growing all the time. We’re tapping into markets we’ve never played before and it’s really wonderful to discover that you have an audience in places that you’ve never been to. We’re definitely looking forward to doing that more and more. n see more online @

next number, “Haven’t Met You Yet,” and finished off with Bublé’s cover of Queen’s “Crazy Little Thing Called Love.” Cookie Watkins’ tribute to Tina Turner is amazing. She looks a lot like Turner but of course it is the voice and the ability to sell a song with a similar power and conviction that makes her tribute outstanding. The songs in the set included “What’s Love Got to Do With It, “Simply the Best,” “Let’s Stay Together” and a terrific finish with “Proud Mary,” both nice and easy and nice and rough. Kevin Mills completes the night as Elvis, a role he has mastered, delivering the classic cuts “That’s All Right,” “Johnny B Goode,” “The Wonder of You,” Suspicious Minds” and a Memorial Day special medley of “America the Beautiful” and “Glory Glory Hallelujah.” As always he has the moves and music to bring Elvis alive onstage. The current Legends performers continue through June 30. Starting on July 2 to Sept.
1, Elvis, Bublé and Perry will be joined by Britney Spears (Katie Murdock) and Rod Stewart (John Anthony). ■
Scott Keo: Wedding Singer Becomes A Legend
The couples who once hired Southern California entertainer Scott Keo as their wedding singer must have thought they hit the jackpot, since this smooth crooner has the saloon singer vibe down pat and he sounds just like Michael Bublé to boot. It was the Bublé connection that led Keo to Vegas and now to Atlantic City in his Legends In Concert debut as the Canadian heartthrob. But let’s let Keo tell you his story. “I have been an entertainer my whole life,” he explains. “As a one-man band, in bands, as a wedding DJ and wedding singer. I heard Bublé in 2005 singing ‘Home’ and I thought I heard my twin. It was just amazing. I fell in love with the voice and I did research on him and how he did jazz and American standards. I loved how he took
the songs and made them his own. I started doing a Bublé tribute at the cocktail hour of my wedding shows.” Thanks to the reception of his Bublé tribute, he started getting gigs across the country, and then went to Vegas. When he saw Legends in Concert he realized, “Legends would be a great fit. I could bring the Rat Pack feel in a fresh new energetic way.” It took him a couple of years to get an audition, but now Atlantic City audiences are enjoying his debut in the show. He’s also enjoying his first trip to both Atlantic City and New Jersey, using a newly purchased bicycle to ride around and check out the area. He also intends to make use of the beach volleyball courts near Showboat since he has used volleyball as his workout the last couple years — sounding like the classic Southern California dude he is. “It’s a great town and I’m really happy to be here. The audiences have been phenomenal. They’re respectful, happy and appreciative, everything I could hope for as a performer.”
Legends Hosts Ultimate Elvis Tribute Contest
When Elvis died his fans refused to let go, which created a need for Elvis tribute artists to fill the void. Those tribute artists led, in turn, to a demand for tributes to other great artists, which led to Legends in Concert, celebrating its 30th year in 2013. Because of the strong Elvis-Legends bond, it is no surprise that the show participates in the annual Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artists Contest, sponsored by Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc. The Legends In Concert Theater at Bally’s Atlantic City will play host to an official Ultimate ETA preliminary battle on Saturday, June 15 at 7pm. Tickets are $32.50 adults, $16.25 for kids 3-16. Winner of this round will then go on to compete in the finals competition held in Memphis during August’s Elvis Week. Part of the prize package for the winner in Memphis is a contract to perform in Legends in Concert. see more online @

hen you’ve seen Legends in Concert many times over the years, you know how one particular show holds up against previous incarnations. Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, the current Legends in Concert line-up stacks up as a vintage show. What makes it so good is its perfect blend of veteran talent and a couple of fresh new faces. The veteran presence is provided by Kevin Mills, who has brought his Elvis tribute to Atlantic City for many years; Steve McCoy, who is also an A.C. regular as Tom Jones and has been a Legend since 1991 and Cookie Watkins, who is new to Atlantic City with her Tina Turner tribute, but whose background includes performing with Duke Ellington at age 14. Bringing a fresh new look to the show are Nellie Norris as Katy Perry, and Scott Keo, who is making his Legends in Concert debut as a dynamic Michael Bublé. Norris kicks off the show with her flashy Perry tribute featuring the hits “Teenage Dream,” “California Gurls,” Perry’s breakout hit “I Kissed A Girl” and “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.).” The costume designers have also made a major contribution, re-creating Perry’s “spinning boobs” dress. The full bore pop/rock ambiance is amazing considering there are only four musicians and six dancers helping Norris bring it all together. Next up is Steve McCoy, who began doing his Tom Jones impersonation at the age of five in his Barrington, NJ home. McCoy once won a Tom Jones contest with Tom Jones as one of the judges, so you know he is legit when he cranks out the TJ numbers like “She’s A Lady,” “What’s New Pussycat” and “Delilah.” Scott Keo then takes over. He launched his Bublé tribute with the sexy standard “Feeling Good,” and help the sensual vibe going with Buble’s signature song “Sway.” He had the audience swaying along as he slid into his

For a quarter century, A Touch of Italy in EHT has served hearty, healthful fare in the finest Italian tradition. By Frank Gabriel • feedback@acweekly.com

wo-and-half decades ago, as a recent college grad employed at his first real-world job, I “discovered” a little jewel of an Italian trattoria tucked nicely away in the middle of the Pleasantville Shopping Center on Route 40. Family-owned and operated, the place was consistently warm and welcoming with wonderful lunchtime portions of pasta for a princely sum of only five bucks, and a meaty Bolognese sauce that was the ideal antidote to any chilly seashore midday. Called A Touch of Italy, the 70-seat eatery genuinely invoked all that is fine and noble about the southern peasant cuisine of my ancestors — basic, hearty, healthful food presented modestly but with obvious care and love. Thoroughly family-oriented, A Touch of Italy was founded by New York Outer Borough natives Jim (from Red Hook, Brooklyn) and Lena (a native of Howard Beach, Queens) Palladino, along with Lena’s sister Anna and her husband Andres Vourvahis. Jim owned real estate in the rural western Atlantic County community of Milmay, and originally relocated to the area to find work at the newly opened Brighton Casino prior to venturing out on his own in Pleasantville. They remained at that original location from 1981 until July of 1993. Two of Jim’s brothers, older sibling Carmine and youngest brother Andrea, also came on board during that time to help manage the kitchen as business grew. Moving a couple miles up the Black Horse Pike, the extended relations took over the longtime former location of Tull’s Seafood in July of 1993. “We had outgrown Touch of Italy in Pleasantville,” says Lena Palladino. “There

Along with its exceptional fare, A Touch of Italy also does live entertainment four nights a week. were too many lines and people were waiting to get in.” In addition to more than tripling its overall capacity, this larger format brought with it a liquor license plus a separate bar and lounge seating area. Unique culinary opportunities, like the installation of perhaps Atlantic County’s first wood-fired brick-oven pizza, also materialized shortly after relocation. To this day, Lena still raves about the nearly 20-old device, custom designed by the Wood-Mode company for A Touch of Italy. Founder and original chef Jim sadly
passed away in 1999, but the family enterprise has endured and continued to grow. True to form, half a dozen second-generation members are currently employed here. When asked about her favorite recommendations for new visitors, Lena immediately suggested a starter of eggplant rollantine — thinly sliced eggplant filled with a ricotta/mozzarella blend, sauced with marinara and oven baked. Or entrees like veal scallopini with shrimp and crab meat — sautéed medallions of veal, topped with jumbo shrimp and crab in a sauce of garlic,
oil and wine with capers, kalamata olives, tomatoes and spinach served with a potato croquette. Making this dish atypical is the fact that A Touch of Italy butchers all veal in-house, insuring both freshness of product and uniformity of portion size. Another favorite is the chicken Sorrentino, which Lena calls “our signature dish,” featuring chicken breast cutlet topped with a layer of sautéed eggplant, prosciutto and mozzarella, and then finished quickly beneath a broiler to melt the cheese, essentially combining the quartet of ingredients. From an extensive list of seafood offerings, she also lauds the zuppa di pesci — jumbo shrimp, scallops, clams, mussels, calamari and scungilli, sautéed aglio olio and served with a choice of either marinara or white sauce over linguine. Pasta, always a standard here, includes selections purchased from well-regarded artisanal producer Severino, located in the Camden County community of Westmont. Lena particularly mentions a newer shape from Severino — “cortecce” translating roughly as “bark of a tree,” a long and narrow tubular creation made from handpulled cavatelli. In addition to food, live entertainment is presented four nights weekly at Touch of Italy. Wednesday nights, acoustic guitarists Alex and Bob perform, while on Thursdays, duo Doug (saxophone) and Bob (acoustic guitar) present a jazzier musical perspective. Value-conscious diners will also appreciate the prix fixe bill of fare, available Sunday through Thursdays and offering a selected appetizer, entrée and dessert for $23.50. ■

or any true fight fan, the second annual All Star Boxing Legends Gala taking place this Saturday night, June 1, will definitely be the place to be. It’ll be a night when, again, a who’s who of boxing dignitaries make their way to Resorts Casino Hotel’s Ballroom to honor some of the very best that have played their part in the Atlantic City boxing scene. The annual event is designed to, at least for one night, shine light on the many people who have given us an array of excitement. Remember when “Mighty” Ivan Robinson fought Arturo “Thunder” Gatti in two epic fights here in A.C. with one of those bouts named Fight of the Year? How about when Iran “The Blade” Barkley, who made his 1982 ring debut in A.C., fought a pure war with Roberto “Hands Of Stone” Duran in 1989, in yet another winner of Fight of the Year honors? On any of those nights there was not a disappointed person in attendance. Robinson and Barkley, along with names like Chuck Wepner, Virgil Hill, Marlon Starling, and female boxing champ Kathy Collins are just a short list of the array of names who are being honored and shown that, yes, we still remember. As a footnote, the annual Boxing Gala isn’t only designed for in-ring combatants, but also for those who have impacted the sport in others ways as well. From every point of the boxing spectrum, the organizers of the gala look to dispense much-deserved credit. The list extends from the likes of
Duran (left) vs. Barkley in 1989
The annual event is designed to, at least for one night, shine light on the many people who have given us an array of excitement Cedric Kushner, who has promoted many exciting fight cards, to referees like Eddie Cotton and Randy Neumann, who have officiated their fare share of star matchups. Add to that list IBF president Daryl Peoples who, when he was a keen-eyed ratings chairman, placed many fighters in championship opportunities and oversaw a multitude of key bouts while wearing his fight supervisor’s cap. Also recognizing the intricate part in breathing life into the A.C. boxing scene, Caesars
executive Ken Condon will also be honored for his contributions. From managers to trainer, to corner men, to photographers, to writers like 2013 honoree Dave Weinberg, no contribution goes unrecognized. In a special ceremony, the Gala will honor those who we have lost over the past year. Hector Camacho Jr. will be in attendance to accept an award for his father, the late great Hector “Macho” Camacho, who tragically passed away this past
November. Tony “Pound for Pound” Martin, who also passed last year under tragic circumstances, will also be posthumously honored, along with former twotime world heavyweight title challenger Carl “The Truth” Williams and others. Former 2012 honorees, like former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, Bobby Czyz, Diane Fisher, Dwight Muhammad Qawi and a huge host of others have given their confirmation on their return to this year’s event as well. It allows them to again, not only receive their inevitable added pats on their backs, but it also lets them become fans themselves, mingling and sharing stories with the ones who have gone through the boxing trenches just like them. Sitting with Starling, a former welterweight champion, at a fight at the Mohegan Sun in Connecticut this past week, we talked about the fight game and his career. The light that shined when we spoke of his accomplishments and the excitement he brought on certain nights was equivalent to a 100-watt bulb that lit up the room. But with all of the greats attending the second annual Gala this Saturday, the light is sure to be blinding. In all, 35 of this year’s honorees, from every aspect of the sport, will have their names called. All have made their mark, so come out and make your mark on this night of meeting and greeting, autograph seeking and picture taking and, most of all, acknowledging — acknowledging legends in their sport. ■

A Bad Hangover Let’s not beat a dead giraffe, but making a third Hangover movie, The Hangover Part III, was a bad idea and killing off a giraffe with its flying head causing a traffic jam of epic proportions is not as funny as the filmmakers hoped, using said animal abuse as the opening salvo of the new film. Since I want to waste as little of my time as possible writing about this film, let me just say that I’m glad the original film made stars out of Bradley Cooper and Zack Galifianakis and that their careers should continue to thrive despite this bump in the road. n

cars, a plane and a tank for some insanely high voltage action. The Dom-Hobbs battle was the highlight of Fast Five. In Fast & Furious 6, a couple of titanic tilts between Rodriquez (who first made her mark as a boxer in the film Girl Fight) and Carano, a Muay Thai/MMA star in real life, are flat out fantastic. These two are tough enough to do most of the fighting themselves and it shows. One flip by Carano brought a gasp from the audience. The one-liners also come flying fast and furious, and while one can quibble at the believability of some of the stunts — let’s be honest, a lot of the stunts are preposterous — in the land of F&F who cares? This is so much damn fun and we care so much about these beloved characters, there is no need for credibility. Just sit back and enjoy the ride.

ou don’t have to be a gearhead to enjoy the Fast & Furious movies; I’m living proof of that. There is something particularly resilient about this franchise. Sure it has suffered from the occasional bout of engine trouble (Tokyo Drift comes to mind) but otherwise, the cool cars and even cooler gang of remarkably talented car jockeys manage to up the ante each time out. The plot is an afterthought, a mere device to provide an excuse to get the gang together again for some hair raising chase scenes and lately, some magnificent hand-to-hand combat. In Fast & Furious 6, the ladies get it on in a couple of spectacular boxing/MMA throwdowns. Director Justin Lin, despite a less than spectacular introduction to the franchise with The Fast & The Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006), has taken the series to another level with the three films that followed — Fast & Furious (2009), Fast Five (2011) and now Fast & Furious 6. The latest chapter takes place a few months after the car chase on the streets of Rio that signaled a high water mark for a car chase in film history, right up there with Bullitt and The Bourne Supremacy. Still exiled from their homeland, former FBI man turned criminal Brian (Paul Walker) and Mia (Jordana Brewster) are new parents, and leader of the pack Dom (Vin Diesel), is the doting uncle. They seem content in their retirement, but that would make for a boring movie, so super fed Agent Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) shows up with an offer that Dom can’t refuse. The latest international super criminal Shaw (Luke Evans) has a new crewmember — Dom’s lady love Letty Ortiz (Michelle Rodriguez) didn’t die in that fiery car crash in Fast & Furious after all. Dom agrees to get the gang back together to stop Shaw and bring Letty back into the family. Rounding up the usual suspects — Roman (Tyrese Gibson), Tej (Chris “Ludacris” Bridges), Han (Sung Kang) and Gisele (Gal Gadot) — plus Hobb’s new partner Riley (Gina Carano), it is time to bring out the
