I haven’t gotten a reply from you since my last letter. It’s been a full week now. I’m beginning to think you never received it. I hope you’re not ignoring me. I know you wouldn’t do that to me, Bruce... You know, just the other day I came across some photos of us from the last time we were together. Oh, the memories. Do you remember the good times we had? I do. That was ten years ago, Bruce. TEN YEARS. It’s been too long. I miss you dearly. I know you’ve been busy and you’ve been all over the place, but I think it’s really important we see each other again. The summer has just begun. Come pay me a visit, won’t you? Please write back, Bruce. With love,

prelude to next weekend’s (June 29-30) Jersey Shore Wine Festival is set for 1pm Thursday, June 20, on the Boardwalk outside of Tropicana, and the end result might mirthfully be called Château “La Feet” Rothschild. The Tropicana marketing team has recruited a few willing participants (among them a Lucille Ball impersonator and AC Weekly associate editor Ray Schweibert) to roll up their pant legs and stomp about 72 pounds of grapes in a 55-gallon oak barrel into wine. Each stomper will then receive a souvenir bottle of their own personal feet-stomped wine with a customized label reading “Stomped by the Feet of (your name here).” Whether or not they actually drink it is up to them. The event is designed to herald the inaugural Jersey Shore Wine Fest, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, June 29-30, from noon-5pm each day on the Boardwalk in front of the Trop. Fifteen state wineries will offer samplings of about 200 different wines, all of which will also be available for purchase in bottles and cases. The event will include acoustic entertainment, and a percentage of the proceeds will benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Atlantic City. Advanced tickets are $15 ($20 the day of the event, ages 21 and over to sample) and available at ticketmaster. com, by phone at 1-800-745-3000, or by going to Tropicana. net and clicking “events.” The festival will take place rain or shine.

Bungalow Lounge and Restaurant will soon debut its Bungalow Beach and, in doing so, amp up its international presence in Atlantic City. By Ray Schweibert • feedback@acweekly.com

f the latest outdoor social spot at Atlantic City’s newest casino is more a rollicking party zone for youth on the north end, the south-end A.C. beaches will soon have a somewhat more subdued space where people of all ages can gather under palm fronds, lounge on padded chairs and daybeds, and enjoy a fun, al fresco day at the beach. And admission is free. The soon-to-open Bungalow Beach will feature around 6,000 square feet of beach enclosed by dune fencing and including palm trees, white umbrellas and matching beach furniture, and will be serviced via a long wooden walkway off the Boardwalk around California Avenue. There is no charge for guests to walk in off the boards or beach and use the enclosure, and food and beverage will be available for purchase through the recently opened Bungalow Lounge and Restaurant (about a block north of the Tropicana) on the Boardwalk. Rental equipment for those wanting to get a little closer to the ocean will also be made available on the site. The setup is unique to Atlantic City but not uncommon to beach resorts in Greece and other Mediterranean retreats. In the United States, Miami’s South Beach might be the only East Coast resort town offering anything similar. “I’m Greek and everything down there is always simple, fun, clean, loud music, some hookah, good food and drink, and good customer service is always essential,” says Bungalow general manager Dino Dounoulis, whose father Nick is the establishment’s owner. “Let them leave happy, that’s the bottom line.” Special permits had to be obtained in order for the Dounoulis family to establish Bungalow Beach, but Dino Dounoulis said the entire process was relatively painless. The project received a lot of support from legislators, likely because it is very much in keeping with the city’s intentions of making the resort

facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly

town a more well-rounded destination. “The city’s been great,” says Dounoulis. “The mayor helped us out tremendously, we’ve met with a representative of the governor’s office and received a lot of support and encouragement.” The latest buzz going around A.C. regarding international panache is probably a localized version of the Palio di Siena, a 300-yearold Italian horse race on the beach that A.C. is considering for this October. But Bungalow Lounge & Restaurant brings another global component to its property in the form of its hookah lounge. The exterior component that adjoins the enclosed part of the property (which features a long indoor bar area with Greekinspired décor) offers hookahs and various flavored tobaccos for guests to sample. Among the 14 flavors are Tangerine Dream, Royal Grape, Double Apple, Strawberry Margarita, Sex on the Beach, Blue Mist, Mint and others. There are also over 15 martinis, frozen drinks and specialty cocktails (like the South Beach Martini, Mango Tango or Bungalow Punch), and after prime dining hours end, the establishment morphs into more of a nightlife vibe with DJs and, eventually, live entertainment on its beach component. Bungalow’s outdoor lounge and seating areas are able to remain open even through most of the colder months through the use of large kerosene-powered heaters. On what was a beautiful and rare (so far) rain-free June afternoon, popular Atlantic City singer (and former nightclub owner) Sandy Fontana dined at Bungalow, as she does frequently. “Absolutely, this is my hang,” she says. “[The Dounoulises] are really nice people who know how to treat you right. They’ve been wanting to do this for a long time. They went through the right channels, they continued to stick with it, and look at what a wonderful job they’ve done.” ■ see more online @

hey didn’t realize it at the time, of course, but when two former members of the 1970s rock group Bachman Turner Overdrive sued two founding members of the band to prevent them from using the BTO name, they actually did Randy Bachman and Fred Turner a big favor. Bachman had been going it mostly solo ever since he left BTO in the late 1970s. Turner, who remained with BTO after Bachman’s departure, quit the band and the music business all together in 1999 to indulge his lifelong passion for cars. But old habits die hard. As much as he loved his cars, Turner also realized he missed music. Perfect timing, because right around 2009, Bachman was working on a solo album and had an idea to invite different lead singers to contribute to the project. One of the songs was titled “Rock ‘n’ Roll is the Only Way Out,” and in his mind’s ear, he could easily hear Turner’s voice taking the lead on that tune. So he got in touch with his former band mate to see if he’d come out of retirement to record the song. “It was perfect for his gritty, refrigeratorsized voice,” Bachman says on the Bachman & Turner Web site. “It turned out so incredible that I asked if he wanted to sing on a few more. He sent me some of his original material, and from that it morphed into a Bachman and Turner project.” And that, of course, is when a few new members joined the band uninvited: lawyers. Bachman’s brother Robbie, the original drummer for BTO, filed suit along with former BTO guitarist Blair Thornton claiming they owned the rights to the name Bachman Turner Overdrive. Rather than put up a legal fight, Randy Bachman didn’t press the issue too hard. In hindsight, he thinks his brother’s lawsuit was, artistically, a good thing for the plans he and Turner had to move forward when they began recording and touring in 2010. The duo decided the name Bachman & Turner would serve them even better without the Overdrive component. Judges and lawyers generally agreed that it’s awfully difficult to prevent two people from using their own last names if they want to go out and perform together. And that’s how Bachman & Turner was born. “Using BTO would’ve taken us backwards and using Bachman-Turner [still] gives us the recognition that we had, but takes us forward, and we’re moving in another direction now,” Bachman, 69, told the music Web site spinner. com at the time. “So it was probably a very fortunate thing that happened.” Bachman & Turner, which plays Resorts Casino Hotel on Saturday, June 22, have been creating new music for the past three years. But in concert, they know fans are coming to hear the big BTO hits, and Bachman & Turner doesn’t disappoint. During a show in New Zealand several months ago, their set list

Randy Bachman (left) and Fred Turner

It’s all about the music, the creative process, the collaboration and teamwork of two old friends and partners. resembled a BTO greatest hits album. They covered many of BTO’s hits, including “Roll On Down the Highway,” “Hey You,” “Let It Ride,” “Looking Out for #1,” “Taking Care of Business” and “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet.” Bachman, who had been a powerhouse singer and songwriter for the Guess Who prior to forming BTO, also performed “American Woman,” the Guess Who’s biggest single and the tune Bachman used as his swan song before leaving that band to create Bachman Turner Overdrive. But just to show the audience that Bachman & Turner aren’t stuck in the past — something Bachman was afraid would happen had they used the name BTO — the duo also performed new material, including the song “Waiting Game” from Bachman & Turner’s 2010 selftitled debut album. Turner, 69, said it was the new music that helped him refocus his attention to writing and singing and brought him out of retirement. “If I have a chance to go out and play new things and grow, then I’ll really be offering people something,” Turner said on the BachmanTurner Web site. “It’s all about the music, the creative process, the collaboration and teamwork of two old friends and partners.” As for Bachman Turner Overdrive, the band has been on “hiatus” since 2005, and a reunion doesn’t appear likely any time soon — if at all. Although there’s been no official announcement, Robbie Bachman has reportedly told people within the music business that he’s no longer interested in playing with any iteration of Bachman Turner Overdrive and is said to have hung up his drumsticks. ■

reetings and salutations — and it just keeps getting better. Everyone from all over is picking up on the new look and creating new memories at Memories in Margate. The St. Monica’s reunion last Saturday had people come in from Naples, Florida, just to be at Memories. Loads of birthday parties, too numerous to mention all, led by the lovely Magdalena and the beautiful Dara, plus Colleen celebrating her bachelorette party. And the Two Amigos are back — Anthony and Sean, with John from Cannulo’s filling in for Justin on his honeymoon. And the big news? Friday’s live broadcast at 5pm, and our Happy hours Wednesday through Sunday with sandwiches from Paesano’s, the talk of the town. And yes, it’s true, we now do a Sunday show from noon to 2pm on 1400 WOND called The Geator, Frank and Friends, which reflects what’s happening at Memories on Sundays — more about that soon. Meanwhile, for further info, tune in to my radio show on KOOL 98.3, WOND’s sister station, weekdays from 7-9pm and weekends live from Memories. It’s going to be a great summer. Now, let’s ask the Geator. Jerry, what are your plans for birthday week? Party on July 3? Also, any chance you will start Lighthouse Pointe on June 27? — Ed K., Ocean City Yes, that’s exactly when we start our Thursday night dance parties in Wildwood. Then, after I do our live broadcast from SugarHouse the following Wednesday, I’ll drive down to Memories and we’ll celebrate my birthday, along with Uncle Sam’s, all night into the Fourth, when we’ll be back at Lighthouse Pointe. Then it’s Memories for the whole weekend, broadcast live starting Friday at 5 on KOOL 98.3. I was listening to your show one night and came in on the “tail” end of a story you were telling about riding a horse on stage. Can you please recount the story? — Tina M., Willingboro I believe I was playing a song by the Contours and mentioned that I once booked them for an outdoor show at the Roosevelt Drive-In. For that show I specifically told the drive-in to screen one of my favorite movies, Crazy Horse, and after the movie I would jump onstage riding a horse. I was planning to start doing this at my live shows. And it happened at the Roosevelt — but unfortunately, when the music started, the horse got spooked and went running

Louis Blavat with the Black Phantom

We now do a Sunday show from noon-2pm on 1400 WOND called ‘The Geator, Frank and Friends’ down Roosevelt Boulevard before the police could capture him. True story. And that was the end of the Geator on horseback at my shows. Geator, long time fan. Personal question: how much do you weigh? — John and Doris, North Catholic/Little Flower In the morning when I get up, 122, by nighttime, 125. That’s my fighting weight. I met my husband at one of your dances in 1962 at Mepri Hall in Mt. Ephraim, NJ. Was it a black Chevy you drove called The Phantom, or is my old memory failing me? Either way, good to see you’re still the Geator. — Mary Ellen via Facebook Close — it was black, but it was a Buick Riviera, one of the first to come off the assembly line in 1962, the year the Riviera model was introduced. We dubbed it The Black Phantom because it reminded me of the Batmobile, and General Motors sent me a plaque for inside the dash that read “The Geator’s Black Phantom.” That’s my dad in the photo in front of the car (pictured above), which he loved. Hi Jerry, I used to be on the Duke of Doo Wop’s Remember When show with my old friend Rocky Rothwell. Not sure if you knew him or not. May he rest in peace. — Dale F. Abbott, Lincoln, RI Didn’t know him personally but knew of him in the Providence area as one of the great people who really loved the oldies. n

n estimated 50,000 people fanned out across the “LandShark” beach and lined the Boardwalk in front of Resorts Casino Hotel last Saturday, June 15, for a free concert that featured famed singer/songwriter Jimmy Buffett. A partner in the new $35 Margaritaville complex at Resorts, Buffett was a late addition — or at least lateannounced addition — to the first of what Resorts and Margaritaville will present as a series of free beach shows this summer. Along with Buffett, his longtime Coral Reefer Band ally Mac McAnally and two other Reefer Band members, Saturday’s show included pop-rock star and opening act Andy Grammer, and the popular trio Wilson Phillips that includes Carnie and Wendy Wilson and Chynna Phillips. “Build it and he will come,” said Buffett shortly after taking the stage. “Surfs up, Atlantic City! Look at this view. The best thing we did was build this place in Atlantic City.” In a set that lasted about an hour, Buffett played “Fins,” “Volcano,” “A Pirate Looks at Forty,” “Cheeseburger in Paradise,” “Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes,” “Another Saturday Night,” “Come Monday” and, of course, “Margaritaville.”

many different guitars, vocals, keyboards, and other various instruments in a process known as “overdubbing” during the recording process, making it difficult to reproduce the studio recordings in a live setting. Having six band members works for Get the Led Out because they are able to recreate the studio music in a way that was never done before. “The blueprint we go off of is to recreate the studio album note for note,” says Childs. There are many other Zeppelin cover bands but none that do it quite way Get the Led Out does. The band is not an impersonation act (nobody’s wearing a Jimmy Page black dragon suit or a blonde wig to mimic Robert Plant) — they are all about the music. Get the Led Out was formed in 2003, but went through a few changes (and a few different band members) before becoming the band it is today. Childs,

who formerly was a member of the ’80s rock band Britney Fox, was approached about joining the band nearly four years ago and said yes without hesitation. Several years before, Childs and Ferraioli played together in a Zeppelin tribute band called Fragile, bringing the whole thing full circle. “Bands are always challenging, but right now for us as a unit, things are going well,” says Childs. “The most challenging [part] is to keep things at this level and to continue to grow it.” The tour schedule has the band doing regional runs, where they do a couple of weeks in one region and then move on to another. Tickets for the Ocean City show can be purchased via Ticketmaster (ticketmaster.com). The show begins at 7:30pm at the Music Pier and doors open at 6:30. ■

et the Led Out played in Ocean City for the first time in July 2012, and the band is back again this summer to rock the stage on June 24, starting 7:30pm at The Music Pier. Get the Led Out is the Led Zeppelin tribute band, whose mission is to bring the studio recordings of Led Zeppelin to life in concert. The band is made up of six members: Andrew Lipke on guitar, Paul Sinclair on harmonica, Adam Ferraioli on drums, Jimmy Marchiano on guitar, Billy Childs on bass, and Paul Hammonds on theremin. While the band does not release a set list before the show, audiences can expect a two and a half hour long show filled with their favorite Zeppelin songs. “What they’ll hear is Led Zeppelin studio albums and cuts in a live environment. If it’s on an album, we do it,” says Childs, adding that the band plays 80 percent of the Zeppelin catalog, but the songs performed at each concert vary due to time constraints. It’s an all-ages show, and Childs says he’s seen audience members ages six to 60 attend. Some audience members are longtime Zeppelin lovers who saw the original band, while others are newer fans who later gained an appreciation of Zeppelin’s iconic status in the rock world. Some others may not be familiar with Zeppelin music at all, but are sure to leave as new fans. “What always amazes me is the affect it has on the audience,” says Childs. “They’re pretty emotionally invested in this stuff and it really effects them. I’ve seen tears in peoples’ eyes. Many of them say they always wanted to hear [the music] presented this way, and never thought they would.” The original Led Zeppelin layered

Iconic Amada

Amada

Like his famed restaurant in Philadelphia, Iron Chef Jose Garces embraces the rich traditions of classic Spanish fare at Revel. By Frank Gabriel • feedback@acweekly.com

leek, elegant and sophisticated, Jose Garces’ flagship restaurant at Revel, Amada, also serves as a sort of linchpin element for the resort itself. Just steps off the casino floor, Amada is the second eatery — after the newly relocated Lugo, in space that was originally One — most visitors encounter venturing through Atlantic City’s newest casino. Arcing across the beach side of Revel, virtually all of Amada’s tables offer a panoramic ocean view. The facility multitasks well; a comfy elevated lounge descends into a two- and four-top section, bordered at its northern frontier by half-moon shaped booths and private dining. Ecuadorian in background and native to Chicago, Garces puts his personal take on the food including traditional Andalusian tapas; small plates meant for sharing, and delivered pretty much as soon as they are prepared. Proving this true, just minutes after our savvy server Vladimir left us, food quickly arrived. If there is a better way to dine in a relaxing seaside atmosphere, we need to be told about it. This started with a pair of cold items; Spanish Serrano ham and gazpacho. The shaved ham, with a nice bit of chew and ideal salinity, served as an exemplary initial tasting. Not quite prosciutto — that honor is reserved for the costlier jamon iberico, also on Amada’s bill of fare — this ham reminded me more of American classic Smithfield, native to Virginia. Served neatly in a whiskey glass, the gazpacho was slightly chunky and doused with a deviously good kick of spicy chiles. It was also icy-cold, studded at its bottom with diced avocado and topped with crushed crostini, all providing a refreshing, palate cleanser after the potent pork. Hot starters fired next. Crab-stuffed piqu-

If there is a better way to dine in a relaxing seaside atmosphere, we need to be told about it. illo peppers brought a pair of finger-size cousins of sweet bells carefully piped with a delicate crab and cheese mix, finished with toasted almonds. Delicate and handled with great care, this is a very elevated creation. Our other choice, bacon-wrapped dates, were the evening’s biggest hit. Four plump pieces of fruit plus thick-cut bacon, oven roasted until those two elements became one, interspersed with tiny, caramelized pearl onions and finished with dollops of a crumbly, northern Spanish bleu called La Perla. That cheese — comparable to Italian gorgonzola —melted sinfully when moved atop still-sizzling bacon, adding a creamy, lasting finish to what was already a spec-

tacular dish. Ensalada verde and a flatbread (“cocas” on the menu) made up the middle portion of our meal. The greens, a heady mix of arugula and mesclun, were blended with a dice of asparagus, avocado, fava and green beans and tossed lightly with sherry vinaigrette. We loved the fresh, nearly raw textures of the asparagus and beans and told our dining partner that this verdant assembly reminded us of springtime on a plate. The crisp flatbread, topped by a combo of artichoke confit, wild mushrooms, black truffles and manchego cheese, delivered a similar, yet earthier, eating experience. Those in search of heartier grub will be

pleased by Amada’s assortment of shellfish, fish, meats and poultry prepared “a la planxa” (grilled). At Vlad’s entreaty, we opted for “merluza” (Spanish sea bass) served as a pair of cleanly prepped filets atop baby artichokes and chorizo. A golden saffron broth spooned around the serving bowl offered instant sauce, was visually stunning and made the fish authentically Spaniard. My choice, “Pluma,” brought a large portion of Iberico pork, gently grilled and properly rested prior to serving. Those prized black pigs, primarily reserved for the aforementioned jamon, also make for one fine pork steak. Echoing the comments of colleague Lori Hoffman in her recent feature, this pork tenderloin is ideally spiced and cooked to a lustful, juicy mid-rare. Naturally fattier than domesticated American varieties, the luxe Iberico possesses a slightly nutty, slightly sweet flavor that is unique and unusual. Which makes sense considering these piggies’ meal of preference for much of their lives are acorns. This is absolutely not your grandma’s roast pork. Sliced wide on a bias, the 10-ounce portion arrived just barely pink and was delivered with a trio of sauces, notably a majestic, crimson romesco — blending roasted red pepper, almonds/hazelnuts, olive oil, garlic and tomatoes — that is sadly neglected by most local chefs. We both opted for lighter desserts after such an extensive repast, mine a trio of frozen delights that included Meyer lemon sorbet, banana malt ice cream and a skillful, seasonal rhubarb sorbet. Our other closer, pastel de chocolate, is a Garces signature: semisweet chocolate cake finished with a caramel sauce and more banana malt ice cream. n see more online @

Atlantic City Airshow moves from August to June 26 to ignite summer season blastoff By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com

JUNE 20 - 26, 2013 • ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY

T

he Atlantic City Airshow, “Thunder Over the Boardwalk,” one of the biggest attractions every summer with record crowds filling the beach and Boardwalk, is making two key changes this year, one by design and one by necessity. For the previous 10 years, the show has taken place in mid-August, but this year the event is taking place Wednesday, June 26, as part of a series of free events being bundled together as the week-long “sand, sea and air” activities. These events are the World Series of Sand Sculpting, which began June 13 and continues through June 30; the Offshore Grand Prix Powerboat Racing, June 21-23, with the races on Sunday, June 23, and the 3rd Annual Atlantic City Salutes Armed Forces Parade on June 24. An unofficial event Tuesday June 25 is the airshow practice, when many of the acts perform test flights and routines in advance of the show. Joe Kelly, president of the Greater Atlantic City Chamber of Commerce, which produces the show, explains that the change in date was designed to “kick off the summer season with the airshow. We thought it would be a great way to start the summer. Then you add the other events during the week, the powerboat races, the Armed Forces Parade, the practice day and we thought that would be a real strong start for the marketplace.” The change made out of necessity was

facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly

We have a three and a half hour show and some of the best aviation teams in the world. We have a great cross section of aircraft. an airshow without the participation of the military. Because of budget cuts, the military planes, including the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and U.S. Army Golden Knights Parachute Team, will not be participating this year. Addressing that, Kelly says: “We have a three and a half hour show and some of the best aviation teams in the world. We have a great cross section of aircraft, some we have not had in the past. There have been about 40 airshows across the country cancelled minus the military support and we’re really proud that we’re presenting a great show and didn’t have to cancel.” He added that the show had just obtained a last minute addition, a performance by a Harrier jet, which he considers a major accomplishment since jets are an airshow fan favorite. Jim Beasley, Jr., an attorney based out of Philadelphia with a summer home in Ocean City, is also a pilot who has participated in the Atlantic City Airshow since it returned in the modern era 11 years ago. Beasley is a founding member of the United States

Heritage Flight program, and has flown in hundreds of Heritage Flights across the United States, Canada and the U.K. In 2006, he was voted “Civilian Heritage Flight Pilot of the Year.” He flies the World War II fighter plane the Spitfire, an English fighter. He also flies a P-51 Mustang, another WWII fighter plane. As someone who has participated in other airshows, he calls the Atlantic City show, “One of the best. It’s great because it is over the water and the people who put it together have such energy and we’ve always had such great support from the 177th [Fighter Wing, based in Pomona].” While Beasley admits that it will be a concern how well the show does without the military, and that he will miss the local support from the 177th Fighter Wing, he adds that, “Dave Schultz [who coordinates the show] has done a good job of putting together an excellent show. It will not be that much different from previous years.” ■

Tips for Enjoying the Airshow Last year the estimated crowd for the Atlantic City Airshow was a staggering 800,000. While it isn’t likely to reach that big a crowd with no military presence in the show this year, it is still likely to go above 500,000, so the crucial move for enjoying the show is to get there early enough to avoid any major traffic head-

aches. As for parking options, If you decide to park at a casino lot, make sure you have a players card for that casino; most casinos charge $20, reduced to $5 with card. Like any trip to the beach, bring sunscreen, snacks, bottled water, blankets and chairs, plus cameras and binoculars to capture the action. The event is centered at Florida Ave. but you can see most everything along the entire length of the Atlantic City Boardwalk and beach. The closer you are to the center, the more crowded it will be so keep that in mind. And of course bring a radio to tune into AM 1400 WOND for the Atlantic City Airshow broadcast or Lite Rock 96.9 WFPG. Be prepared to stick around after the airshow, since it takes several hours for the human and traffic congestion to clear after the show. If your making a vacation trip around the airshow, consider arriving by Sunday, june 23, that way you can also enjoy the Atlantic City Offshore Grand Prix, powerboat races featuring some boats that can reach speeds of 150mph. The races take place on the ocean starting at Revel and going to Atlantic Club and back around. Races begin at noon. The other events worth checking out for a complete “DO AC” package are the Salute to the Armed Forces Parade, which begins on the Boardwalk at 6:30pm on Monday, june 24. On Tuesday, june 25 you can enjoy airshow participants on a less crowded beach for the practice runs of the aircraft. While visiting, don’t forget to head for the beach at Missouri Ave. between The Pier Shops at Caesars and Trump Plaza, to see the ultimate sand art at the ongoing World Championship of Sand Sculpting, yet another free event for airshow week. n

wishing to view the Airshow from the ocean are welcome, but should be aware that there will be a “no boat zone” restricting boaters except for the u.S. Coast Guard, police and other marine units, from approaching too close to the Atlantic City beach. A handicap viewing area will be available at the pavilion at Montpelier Ave. and the Boardwalk. There is a handicap accessible ramp on Montpelier Ave. Space is limited and will be restricted for those in wheelchairs that cannot access the beach. Handicapped parking will be available on Albany Ave., which has an accessible ramp for entrance onto the Boardwalk. One Atlantic at the Pier Shops at Caesars, Missouri Ave. at Boardwalk, offers VIP viewing of the Airshow with “under the Thunder” from 11am-3pm for $100; for info call 343-9902. The Pier Shops at Caesars offers the first 500 guests complimentary all-day access passes to the Surf Deck, located at the rear of the first level, over the ocean. You can also enjoy a panoramic view of the show from the third level with floor-to-ceiling windows, Adirondack chairs and a variety of dining options.

Man of Steel Superman reboot has its ups and downs By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com

D

irector Zack Snyder, whose credits include 300 and Watchmen, was given the task of rebooting the Superman franchise. He didn’t have to worry about fans complaining that the comic book icon was just redone in 2006 by Bryan Singer because Superman Returns was so darn forgettable that Brandon Routh has barely been heard from since. Actor Henry Cavill is a Jersey dude, from the Bailiwick of Jersey in the Channel Islands. Translation: that makes him British. In Man of Steel, Snyder and his writers, David S. Goyer and Batman Trilogy director Christopher Nolan (who is also a producer), have provided an extensive preamble about Superman’s parents (in particular Russell Crowe as Jor-El), his home world Krypton and why General Zod has issues with his family. The film then skips over the infant’s crash landing on earth, providing the Kent family background in several flashbacks instead. Basically Clark Kent’s adopted father Jonathan Kent (Kevin Costner) warned him that his powers would frighten the world and he should keep his alien identity on the down low. As an adult that turns Clark Kent/KalEl into a job-to-job wanderer much like Wolverine, until he needs to use his power’s to save someone and has to disappear again. When he pulls this hidden hero trick while Pulitzer-prize winning reporter Lois Lane (Amy Adams) from the Daily Planet is watching, his cover is blown. This is when the film dives into the familiar territory of the Clark Kent/Lois Lane dynamic that has a nice modern update thanks to Adams, whose determination and smarts make her the best embodiment of Lane in the history of the movie franchise. The romantic element, however, gets shoved aside by the computer-generated action when General Zod (Michael Shannon)

facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly

arrives ready to release his rage against Kal-El and the puny planet that he calls home. Zod has an agenda for colonizing earth but Superman has other plans. You get his anger up when you mess with his mama (played by Diane Lane). The problem with Man of Steel is that while the background story and character development are solid, the action sequences are distressingly generic and bland, hammering away, loud and meaningless, like outtakes from any of the Transformers movies. Unlike say Iron Man 3’s emotionally charged action sequences as a recent example, the action in Man of Steel doesn’t feel connected to the story. And that’s with Shannon, the current king of eye-popping anger management issues, doing his thing with gusto as General Zod. That brings us to Henry Cavill in the title role. He certainly looks the part of a superhero with his gorgeous exterior, including piercing blue eyes and a steel-like chin. As for his performance, Cavill isn’t bad but he doesn’t fully engage us either. He begins to show signs of superhero style when spunky Lois shows him that humans might jump to unfortunate conclusions when confronted with something they can’t explain, but that if you give them a chance they will show you enough courage and loyalty to be worth saving. He doesn’t blow us away as Superman, but you sense that he has the capacity to fully embrace the cape down the road, perhaps as soon as the next chapter of the series. Man of Steel has its moments, but the generic action spoils the overall impression of the film.

Man of Steel Directed by Zack Snyder • Rated PG-13
