AM Remembered in AC
C
RACK PIPES AND VALENTINES. His recent near-death plane wreck, which left him burned — but alive. Those are some of the tragic memories that will be attached to the late Adam Goldstein, the 36-year-old Philly native whose nom de scratch DJ AM became synonymous with first-rate dance shows from Hollywood to Atlantic City. But there are good memories, too. Lots of them. Like Goldstein throwing out the first pitch at Citi Field on Sunday, Aug. 23. And spinning on the following Tuesday at Dusk, the Atlantic City nightclub at Caesars that Goldstein, who was found dead at his Manhattan apartment on Friday, Aug. 28, co-owned. That Tuesday night at Dusk was his last public DJ performance anywhere. The club went dark the following Friday, the night when news spread like wildfire on the Web about the soughtafter DJ who not only had a new club near his hometown open this summer, but was on the verge of even bigger DJ super-stardom with a new MTV show about to debut (ironically about family intervention for drug users) in October, as well as a featured role in a new video game called DJ Hero, set for release Oct. 27 by Activision. Past drug addictions. Gossip-column romances. A broken-heart. Write-ups in the tabloids and on the Web about suicide attempts. His friends and colleagues won’t remember Adam like that. They’ll likely remember him as Eric Millstein, VP of the Red Stripe Plane Group, which is part owner of Dusk, depicts in the following statement to the media: “During those days I spent with him,

like any other, he was the man I have come to know over the years: kind, genuine, funny, sensitive and above all a caring friend. I know his legacy will live on and we in the Dusk family will make sure we always represent the very best of him. The world has lost a tremendous talent, but I have lost a great friend. Or like the picture (above), which our photographer Nick Valinote snapped at Dusk on Tuesday, Aug. 25. By phone, Millstein spoke with me about the future of Dusk: “[Adam] was involved in [every] step of the way — from a design standpoint, obviously sound, lighting, music format, marketing

A Jitney Driver’s View T By Pinky Kravitz
HIS COLUMN HAD PREVIOUSLY PRESENTED two differing viewpoints on the proposal to have Atlantic and Pacific avenues become one-way streets. One was from a local citizen, the other from an engineer of the company that is proposing the change. Now it is time to present to you the view of Frank Becktel, an Atlantic City resident who is a jitney driver. His livelihood is dependent upon the transportation of the public on Pacific and Ventnor avenues. Becktel writes:
“As all of Pinky’s readers and listeners know, the [Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA)] is committed to establishing one-way traffic on Atlantic and Pacific avenues. Vehicle congestion and pedestrian safety are their reasons to make such a radical change. To that end, they hired an out-of-town consultant, AECOM, to develop the plan. The CRDA’s out-of-town consultant says that along with making Pacific and Atlantic avenues into one-way streets, they also plan to resurface Pacific Avenue, synchronize the traffic lights, and install ‘pedestrian countdown signals.’ Terrific! These are all improvements that are long overdue, but must we have one-way streets in order to have these marvels of technology — convenience and safety? The CRDA’s out-of-town consultant argues that one-way streets will improve traffic flow and make it quicker and easier for vehicles to circulate. But how would pedestrian safety negotiate this supposedly fast, free-flowing traffic? The CRDA’s out-of-town consultant advocates installing ‘sidewalk extensions.’ Sidewalk extensions would create an hourglass affect on every intersection on Atlantic Avenue. The purpose of these little concrete peninsulas is to keep pedestrians elevated on the protruding sidewalks for a few more steps before they cross the street. The real-world affect will be to pinch the road by 22 feet at every crossing, confusing drivers who would like to make a turn and hindering those wishing to park on Atlantic Avenue. Sidewalk extensions are traditionally used as ‘traffic calming devices’ designed to slow traffic by creating obstacles in the path of drivers. So which is it? Does the CRDA want to slow down the traffic, or speed it up? “The CRDA has relocated the bus terminal multiple times yet never considered that N.J. Transit buses must stop there. This causes constant traffic back-ups for cars entering the Expressway. The CRDA should have set the building back to provide more lanes instead of squeezing all the traffic into a single lane when buses are there. “The CRDA’s out-of-town consultant admits that the most unsafe intersections for pedestrians are at The Walk. Apparently, the CRDA did not foresee a problem when they developed the pedestrian-focused retail mall at the foot of a major highway. Furthermore, they want to build a parking garage, along with more outlet shops, on the other side of the Expressway, which will force more pedestrian crossings. If the CRDA was really concerned about pedestrian safety, they would have put The Walk on the Boardwalk. The CRDA’s out-of-town consultant is also unfamiliar with the geographic boundaries of Atlantic City and completely ignorant of our jitney system. First of all, Atlantic City doesn’t end at Albany
Avenue, as claimed. Our community consists of more than just casinos. There are 18 city blocks beyond Albany Avenue that jitneys serve. And contrary to what the consultant says, there are many people who would be unable, unwilling or even afraid to walk all the way to Atlantic Avenue to ride a jitney from Caesars to Tropicana. And the consultant was dead wrong to suggest it would be faster to catch a jitney going the opposite way and ride all the way around the city. “I am sorry the CRDA spent a ton of money for an out-oftown consultant. Many of the same ideas have been previously suggested, at no cost, by Pinky Kravitz, countless city residents, Mayor [Lorenzo] Langford, and other elected officials. Pave streets, modernize the traffic signals, and move the bus terminal (again). We all agree that these measures will improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety. And we look forward to CRDA following through and paying for these improvements. But don’t strong-arm Atlantic City into one-way streets we don’t want. Just give our city that help we desperately need.” You have now read — in separate editions of this column — the viewpoint of an Atlantic City resident against the proposal, the viewpoint of an engineer who worked on the proposal and responded to that same resident’s objections, and now the reaction to the oneway plan by a jitney driver and local resident. The final decision for one-way Atlantic and Pacific avenues rests in the hands of Atlantic City’s City Council. Please let them know what you would like them to do.

They Wanna Have Fun An initial hit, The Pier Shops hosts its second Girls Night Out event on Thursday evening, Sept. 3 By Ray Schweibert
B
ACK IN MAY, AND SERVING as a sort of prelude to summer, The Pier Shops at Caesars pampered its female clientele with a special evening on the Thursday before Memorial Day weekend. Ladies were treated to complimentary samplings from several of The Pier Shops’ 80-plus high-end stores and restaurants, given make-up and beauty tips, fashion advice and sneak-peaks on the latest in attire and accessories. Afterward they were invited to compare notes over discounted drink and dining specials and — at the risk of being scorned socially or facing the wrath of their female companions — were even allowed to bring their husbands or significant others along with them. Such a success was the initial Girls Night Out that The Pier Shops opted to do it again — on the Thursday before
Labor Day weekend, Sept. 3. The event is again free of charge, and all ladies who register in advance (see info box below) will receive a complimentary gift bag with goodies from several Pier Shops retailers. Only ladies are entitled to the complimentary gift bags, but you do not need to be a member of the feminine gender to attend the event. “We got a great response back in May and just thought it would be a good idea to do it again,” says The Pier Shops marketing director Vicki Weiss. “It’s just a fun night for girls to come out, do a little shopping, maybe head upstairs for a drink or to do dinner. We had a few men tag along last time, but they won’t be getting a gift bag.” Among the specials scheduled are “Tommy Bahama’s Endless Summer Event,” in which ladies will be given a
preview of the island-inspired clothier’s newest collection, enjoy tasty treats and tropical drinks compliments of Phillips Seafood, and be entertained by a live steel drum performance. Guests will be given $25 off purchases of $100 or more. Bebe will offer $25 off minimum purchases of $150, and will give away a special bebe mesh bag with any purchase. Cos Bar will bring in a Laura Mercier Cosmetics make-up artist who will give free consultations and tips on the hottest fall cosmetics trends. One of The Pier Shops’ newest additions, Design Jewelry, will showcase its custom jewelry line and conduct an educational seminar in a presentation called “Jewelry: Just Like Chocolate, You Can’t Get Enough.” Shoppers will get 20 to 40 percent off jewelry and can sample delicious chocolates. Trinity Irish Pub and Carvery’s “Fruit and Flights” event will offer sample flights of beers, wines and martinis for $6 per flight, and will have special discounts on its fruit-comprised dishes such as its Pear and Blue Cheese Salad, Cheese and Fruit Plate, or Apple Tart Dessert. Along with Trinity, The Pier Shops’ other six restaurants — including Buddakan, The
Continental, Game On!, Phillips Seafood, Sonsie, and Souzai Sushi and Sake — will be participating with specials including $5 mixed drinks, $4 glasses of wine and $3 beers that are usually part of a standard Friday night package at The Pier. Another appealing Girls Night Out component is the Leather and Fur Ranch’s “Brighton Casino Night.” Brighton is an accessories line designed to coordinate from head to toe, and guests can try their luck at winning Brighton Bucks by rolling the dice or playing Brighton Roulette. Each guest will be given a goodie bag with special offers and $10 in Brighton Bucks. Several other Pier Shops will also be offering discounts and specials. “It was a really fun night in May, and we’re looking forward to another one,” says Weiss. n

Men Who Stare
Northern Exposure The official start of the Academy Award hunt begins in Toronto By Lori Hoffman
I
T’S THE TIME OF THE MOVIEGOING season when the stars fly north in search of positive Oscar buzz for their movies. The 34th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) will be even more crucial as an award launching pad now that the rules have changed and 10 movies will be nominated for best picture. This change is perhaps reflected in the number of stars attending this year’s fest. This will be my 21st year covering TIFF for Atlantic City Weekly. Joining me up in Hollywood North will be George Clooney, a festival regular, who has two movies showing — a war satire called The Men Who Stares at Goats, and the latest film from Jason Reitman (Juno), Up In The Air. In the latter, Clooney plays a corporate downsizing expert whose cherished life on the road is threatened just as he is on the cusp of reaching 10 million frequent flyer miles and just after he’s met the frequenttraveler woman of his dreams. Clooney’s Ocean’s Eleven and Syriana co-star Matt Damon will be in town to plug his latest film, directed by Steven
Soderbergh, The Informant! The film is based on the true tale of a corporate whistle blower who takes industrial espionage to a new level. The Coen brothers have been regulars in Toronto from the beginning of their careers with Blood Simple, and more recently for the Oscar-winning No Country For Old Men and Burn After Reading. Their latest is a comedy drama set in their native Minnesota called A Simple Man. A period piece set in 1967, it is about a man whose suburban bliss is turning into a nightmare of Coen-esque proportions. The festival will present the North American premiere of Michael Moore’s new documentary, Capitalism: A Love Story. His latest is a cautionary tale that confronts an issue he’s been examining throughout his career: the disastrous impact of corporate dominance on the everyday lives of Americans. Drew Barrymore presents the world premiere of her directorial debut, WhipIt, starring Juno’s Ellen Page as Bliss, a rebellious Texas teen who tosses aside her small-town beauty pageant crown for the
rowdy world of roller-derby. In the documentary division, music fans should dig The White Stripes: Under Great White Northern Lights, an intimate look inside The White Stripes’ cross-Canada tour. Cleanflix is about a Mormon community where several Utah-based entrepreneurs started offering “clean” versions of Hollywood movies at specialty DVD stores. But the thriving industry runs into legal problems and its own sex scandal. The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers is about Ellsberg, a valued strategist inside the American government until he leaked the Pentagon Papers and exposed the lies of the Vietnam War. In the Mavericks segment of the festival, filmmakers discuss their careers. “In Conversation with Michael Caine” will be a highlight this year. I’ve had the chance to interview Caine in the past and he is a fabulous talent and a terrific conversationalist.

THE ‘F’ WORD
Stay Positive in Our Tough Job Market By Whitney Ullman
E
CONOMY ESHMONOMY. Yeah, I said it, but it’s time for you to be saying it too. As we all know a couple of years ago there was a dramatic downturn in the economy and most of us were affected. However, as with anything dramatic that happens in our lives, we need to learn how to adapt and survive. There are a few of us who were able to do so, however, there are still many of us who are slacking at our jobs or making excuses not to look for jobs because we are blaming it on the economy. If there is nothing available in your particular field right now, that can surely be tough. However, I come across many business owners — almost daily — who are searching for various types of employees. Granted, some positions are part time or may not pay a lot, but when you need money then you should think about tak-
ing anything available. Especially if it’s a customer-oriented job: then, you can meet new people and make new contacts. And some of these smaller jobs may lead to bigger ones. You never know. As they say, you can’t win if you don’t play. Many people are taking on second jobs these days and working in fields that they never thought they’d be in, but that is definitely acceptable in today’s world. There is another saying: “Stop being reactive and start being proactive.” In my opinion, we need to start thinking of new and innovative ways to stay in business as well as find business. We can do it! So in this job market, get out there, make yourself known and don’t be afraid of rejection. Everything happens for a reason so maybe a job you didn’t get wasn’t the right one for you in the first place. On a similar note, if you’re an employer and you recently had to cut pay or lay
off people, then it is imperative to make sure your current employees feel important and appreciated. Keep them motivated because they won’t automatically feel special that they weren’t cut. On the contrary, most of them are probably stressed out and nervous that they could be next. Little things can go a long way such as having small contests and taking everyone out for happy hour. Stay positive!
Whitney’s Radar: I had the best time this past weekend at a dinner with basically a dozen strangers. I figured that since we weren’t that big of a group and were in a circular table that it would be fun to play an icebreaker game called “Two Truths and a Lie.” This is the game: Each person says two truths and one lie about themselves and then every-
one has to guess which one is the lie. With this game, you can find out extraordinary things about people. For instance, one guy we met has been responsible for setting up 10 marriages. Another guy was nominated for a few Grammys. One of the best truths of the night was from a girl who was born with a double uvula! Well, that certainly got the crowd roaring. (However, I’m not sure the guys actually knew what the uvula means.) n

HEN DINOSAURS RULED the earth, New Jersey was home to numerous species including the famous Hadrosaurus foulkii, the first nearly complete skeleton of a dinosaur to ever be unearthed, by William Parker Foulke in Haddonfield, N.J., in 1858. Foulke started the whole dinosaur craze right here in the Garden State. Now Boardwalk Hall has been transformed into the land that time forgot thanks to Walking with Dinosaurs: The Arena Spectacular. T-Rex and Stegosaurus and Brachiosaurus, oh my, are roaming Boardwalk Hall in a stage extravaganza based on the award-winning BBC television series. The show originated in Australia, where it opened in January 2007. The show continues its North American tour at Boardwalk Hall through Sunday, Sept. 6, presented by The Creature Production Company. Creature Production Company CEO Carmen Pavlovic explains, “It’s a $20 million arena spectacular of unprecedented size and quality. Fifteen roaring, snarling ‘live’ dinosaurs are as awe-inspiring as when they first walked on earth.” The show is a fantastic history lesson with a narrator, a paleontologist named Huxley (played in the current production by Jack Stone), whose facts have been verified by real paleontologists, since the show strives to be as accurate as possible.
‘Walking with Dinosaurs’ brings life-sized prehistoric critters to life at Boardwalk Hall
The show is 96 minutes long, presented in two acts with an intermission. Walking with Dinosaurs uses the stage at one end of Boardwalk Hall, but the entire arena floor is also used as a performance area. The dinosaurs will seem close enough to touch, but don’t be tempted. Stone has been with the show since March and explains what his reaction was when he saw it for the first time. “I was blown away by how realistic they look and how well put together the show is. The score is beautiful, the lighting is amazing. It’s the complete package. It’s the closest thing to going back in time and being there. If you ever wondered what it would be like to see a real dinosaur, you are going to see it. It’s a great night of live theater.” He adds, “There are a lot of oohs and aahs when the Brachs come out. Then when the Lilienstrenus comes out, you can sense the little kids reacting, ‘I don’t like that one.’ She’s like a raptor. The kids start the show in their seats, but by the time the T-Rex comes out, a lot of the little kids are in their parents’ laps. Of course the T-Rex has the most notoriety, but then some of the other dinosaurs come out that aren’t as well known like the Ankylosaurus, which is the most heavily armored dinosaur. When they see it, it’s like ‘what the heck is that?’
That is really cool.” Stone loves the audience reaction when they first see the dinosaurs, but he does recall one fan who could not restrain himself. “When we were in London, Ontario, a guy jumped out of the audience and tried to ride one of the dinosaurs. They arrested him and he said, ‘It has been my dream to ride a dinosaur!’
The whole dinosaur craze started right here in the Garden State. “Well, get in line,” says Stone, laughing. “These are million-dollar machines. At first I thought it was one of our crew guys. I could only see a black shirt. I’m talking and the whole scene is going on, then I look over and say, ‘Oh, no.’ I go running over [towards him] and he takes off. We didn’t miss a beat and the show went on smoothly.” As for the technology to pull off such a massive show, the smaller dinosaurs are manipulated by puppeteers in dinosaur suits that weight 100 pounds. To

operate the full-size dinosaurs, it takes a team of three people — one driver and two puppeteers, one who operates the head and tail motion, and one in charge of smaller movements, the mouth, the eyes and the roars. This is one show where having a nosebleed seat might be an advantage. The further away from the action, the more you can see the panoramic view of the entire presentation. The man who created the dinosaurs is Aussie Sonny Tilders, the creator of high-tech puppets for Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith; Peter Pan and the Chronicles of Narnia. “To create life-size dinosaurs to walk independently around a stage, we have very clever engineering to make these things nimble. There’s a radio control system and to drive it all we have very clever performers. There is nothing like it in terms of its combination of storytelling, technology puppetry, and pure entertainment.” My favorite scene in the show is the end of Act One where we have two Brachiosaurs, a mother nurturing the younger one. The mother leans over the younger one and the young one nuzzles her. That for me is a moment of magic between the puppetry, the score, the storytelling and the science all coming together to create that absolute magical moment. n see more online @

The Pet Shop Boys Where: House of Blues at Showboat When: Sunday, Sept. 6, 8pm How Much: $55-$75
‘West End’ Guys Pet Shop Boys finally make Atlantic City debut at the House of Blues By Ed Condran
T
HE PET SHOP BOYS ARE completely different animals on and off stage. While performing, vocalist Neil Tennant and keyboardist Chris Lowe are more than happy to engage a crowd while delivering their material performing in front of a visual production, which rivals Broadway. However, Tennant and Lowe are reserved and reluctant for attention while out of the limelight. “We’re fairly shy when we’re not performing,” Chris Lowe tells Atlantic City Weekly while calling from his London home. “That brings to mind an embarrassing moment we had in Atlantic City. A few years ago we saw Liza Minnelli there and she introduced us, but we were too shy to stand when they illuminated us in our seats. So everyone had to stand up to see us. Terribly embarrassing.”
‘We’re in another economic decline and we’re providing that escapism again.’
you, you pay my rent.’ It’s funny but a bit depressing lyrically.” But the act’s live show is never depressing. The Pet Shop Boys’ theatrics are always huge and over-the-top. “We’ve always been about having a big, very visual show and this tour is no different,” says Lowe. “We have a lot of video and a lot of dancers. The show is as exuberant as the songs. It’s just endless fun for us. The crowd sings along to most of the songs. They even sing along to ‘Being Boring.’ That’s why I always look forward to our tours. They’re always big, fun events.” The Pet Shop Boys show no sign of slowing down. “Why should we?” asks Lowe. “We’re still inspired. It’s nice to hear younger artists like Lady Gaga name check us. I just love her. She was dressed as a tea pot when we saw her here. Her little arm was the spout, how clever. When I saw that she was wearing glasses that were actually monitors, I was so jealous. That sort of thing is brilliant.” Lady Gaga would fit right in with the creative elements in the Pet Shop Boys’ show. “We have a lot of eye candy in
our show, but we certainly didn’t invent it,” says Lowe. “David Bowie inspired Neil and I in so many ways. Bowie was groundbreaking. He wore outrageous clothes and his shows during the ’70s were such a spectacle. It had such an effect on us. We didn’t want to tour until we could afford to put on a show. There was no way that Neil and I were going to get up there and just perform without anything going on around us. I think that visual performance is coming back in music. We’re finally stepping away from the ’90s, which was full of recording artists who would just get up there and play in their regular clothes and look just like ordinary people. I don’t want to be an ordinary person onstage.” However, offstage, it would be difficult to spot Lowe, who is more than happy to mix into a crowd. “Being on and offstage are two different things,” says Lowe. “I just like being like everybody else when I’m not performing. I don’t need extra attention. I don’t need to live like I’m in a reality show. I get enough attention when we’re performing.” n

Well, when the Pet Shop Boys return Sunday (Sept. 6) to Atlantic City, you can count on the duo to stand tall while the lights shine upon them for their A.C. debut at the House of Blues. “I can’t believe after all of these years that we never played Atlantic City,” says Lowe. “We’re finally playing Atlantic City at this point in our career.” Nearly 30 years have passed since Tennant and Lowe formed the act. And apparently it’s time to fete the Pet Shop Boys. The electronic dance tandem recently received an award for Outstanding Contribution to Music at the 2009 Brit Awards. Such young upstarts as Lady Gaga and the Killers paid tribute to the influential Pet Shop Boys backstage at the event while the duo hoisted their hardware, that marks a career achievement. “It’s nice, but it’s not as if we’re retiring,” says Lowe. “We’re still making music.”
Indeed. The Pet Shop Boys, which also includes vocalist Neil Tennant, are touring behind its 12th album, Yes. While crafting the buoyant tracks, it dawned on Lowe that the material is familiar. “It reminded me of our early songs,” says Lowe. “Our earlier work was uplifting and euphoric. And then the times were reminiscent of what we’re living through now. I remember the early ’80s, coming out of the recession and you needed that form of escapism that you get with us. So we’re in another economic decline and we’re providing that escapism again.” The Pet Shop Boys will also provide the hits at the House of Blues. Expect the duo, which has sold more than 100 million albums, to render “West End Girls,” “It’s a Sin” and “Always on My Mind.” “There are certain songs that we have to play,” says Lowe. “But I don’t mind. We enjoy making people happy.” Much of the group’s sonic side is up, while there is often a tinge of sadness in the Pet Shop Boys’ sardonic songs. “That’s just the way Neil writes,” says Lowe. “Take a song like ‘Rent’ — ‘I love

Still Some Summer Left There’s plenty of fun activity taking place in the area after Labor Day weekend By Raymond Tyler
T
HIS SUMMER HAS NOT BEEN one of my favorites. First M.J. and a host of other icons pass away, and there were no real superstars in town like Jay-Z, Stevie Wonder or Beyonce. This past weekend, however, I did catch Full Force and the Force MDs at Gardner’s Basin for an old-school show. Sunday’s show drew hundreds of people to the open-air stage. Full Force took us back to late ’80s and early ’90s with their hits “Alice” and “Temporary Love Thing.” The part of the show I enjoyed most was when they performed the hits they recorded with Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam. Lisa Lisa was not there, but Bow-Legged
Lou introduced a new talent who has a voice that would have to be heard to be believed named Kylee Claxton. The 23-year-old Claxton made Lisa Lisa’s “All Cried Out” her own as she performed with Full Force. Lou, or whoever discovered Claxton, should be signing talent for record labels today. Claxton was amazing and refreshing. The Force MDs also did a great show, performing hits such as “Tears” and “Love Is a House.” The highlight of the show came when the Force MDs did some spoton impersonations — it was their ability to mimic that made me notice them on their first hit song “Inching for a Scratch”
from the movie Breaking. Full Force also season? Seriously, though, boat parties are came out and did some comedy and as much a part of summer as linen shorts and white shoes. Cuba Libre
Cuban Home Cookin’
Cuba Libre is the signature site of The Quarter’s now five-year-old ‘Little Havana’ motif By Frank Gabriel PHOTO BYDON KRAVITZ
A
TLANTIC CITY’S TROPICANAbased district called The Quarter possesses a pulsing Latino heart known better as Cuba Libre. The complex sprawls across two levels, connected by a panoramic, winding staircase, which offers views of the entire restaurant and beyond. Designed to reflect the pre-Castro era of the Caribbean’s largest island nation, Cuba Libre presents serious, sensuous, daring cuisine. Striking us most during our weekend visit was the extraordinary level of attention to detail present in every aspect of this enterprise, like my empanada appetizer (called ‘Tres Amigos’) — three precious little halfmoon shaped pies, each an ingenious bit of culinary art. Formed skillfully, their shiny, baked shells demonstrate a high degree of pastry savvy. The first one we sampled was beef picadillo, a savory blend of crumbled meat, olives and raisins. That latter pair of ingredients, seemingly so different, work magnificently in this combine, with the olives resonating a salty sweetness and the raisins bringing a charming textural element. Next was a pulled pork, roasted poblano and charred tomato pairing and the third a lighter variant, chicken, corn and Jack cheese. Ladled beneath the trio was a simply amazing tomatillo relish, jam-like in consistency and packing a scene-stealing multi-flavor punch. Finishing the long narrow plate, a mini-salad of young

spinach tossed with goat cheese ranch dressing demurred pleasantly. My dining partner sampled their take on classic black bean soup and found it a chunky, mildly spiced blend. Accompanying this hearty staple were a duet of tiny corn cakes known as ‘arepitas.’ Further proof of the kitchen’s intention to pay homage to traditional cuisine without being ordinary arrived in the form of her gorgeous-looking main course, Camarones con Cana. Four jumbo shrimp were skewered around a stalk of sugarcane (the island’s original export crop and source of their famous rum) then glazed with a sticky mango
BBQ sauce. Pan-seared rather than grilled, the juicy crustacean’s natural essence remained, amplified by the tropical earthiness of the cane. Riding shotgun next to the shrimp and sugar tower was a conical Anaheim pepper, providing just the slightest hint of capsicum. Stuffed inside its vegetative shell was a luxuriant mix of the wonderful Native American grain quinoa plus sweet potato and cheese. The overall effect was rich, creamy and complex. Another peppery element, a roasted Cubanelle crema with an avocado and pineapple guacamole, completed the plating. My selection was Churrasco a la

Cubano, grilled skirt steak. That underappreciated cut, long a treat for butchers and chefs, produces results as tender as costlier ones when in the proper hands. Cuba Libre’s version, probably closed to 12 ounces, was ordered and delivered at an agreeable mid-rare. Perched atop a pillow of garlic-mashed potatoes, its natural juices pleasantly seeped into the nearly pureed starch. A gently tossed conglomeration of watercress and rosemary mushroom escabeche salad accompanied the beef. ‘Escabeche’ refers to a time-honored technique to enhance and preserve food. Sauced by parsley, lemon and onion, the steak was well seasoned and given proper time to rest prior to delivery. My dessert of choice was Torta de Chocolate y Dulce de leche, a disc of fallen chocolate soufflé ladled with a scoop of house-made caramel ice cream. Plated alongside, a tart compote of fresh blueberries subtly reminded us that summer is indeed on the wane. My partner’s option was simpler; arroz con leche, a comforting, home-style rice pudding. As we wandered out, a line of glamorous patrons queued up waiting for entrance, and Cuba Libre continued to transform from gourmet restaurant into a Latin-themed nightclub. n E-mail Frank Gabriel at fgabriel@acweekly.com

Twisted Dune Golf Club
Twisted Dune
Address: 2101 Ocean Heights Ave., EHT Phone: 653-8019 (pro shop) On the Web: twisteddune.com Details: Twisted Dune is a links-style course that opened in May 2001. It is uniquely structured with dramatic elevations and deep bunkers that line twisting and contoured fairways. Local golf-course architect Archie Struthers designed it on acreage that was once a horse farm, moving an estimated two million cubic yards of land to give it the appearance and playability of a course on the Scottish Coast. Construction took about two years. The course measures 7,336 yards from the long tees, 6,777 yards from the middle tees and 5,870 yards from the front tees. It features four par-5s (each over 500 yards), four par-3s and 10 par-4s. It is accommodating to all skill levels and is consistently rated on the “best of” list of every major golf trade publication. “What makes Twisted Dune so unique is the fact that most people probably think of South Jersey as flat, and we’re the one golf course in the area that has more elevation changes than any other,” says Scott Dunn, general manager and head golf professional at Twisted Dune since 2003. “And in some cases you’re talking 75 to 100 feet of elevation, which is substantial. I think that’s why a lot of people like to play here — because it’s different from all the other golf courses in the area.” Dunn estimates that about 80 percent of Twisted Dune’s players are tourists or part-time area residents. “We did try to keep in mind that a lot of the people
Between Sept. 8 and Oct. 25 rates decrease roughly $10 per timeframe, and winter rates kick in Oct. 26, when a round is just $49 dawn to dusk, seven days. “We’re open year-round, and we get a lot of play during the winter on nice days,” says Dunn. Twisted Dune is home to MC’s Golf Academy, which offers lessons and clinics under the guidance of PGA pros Matt Callaghan, David Wixon and Dunn. “The Golf Academy has done very well for us this year,” says Dunn. “It’s probably been our busiest season of the last five.”
Golf Pro Tip: This week’s tip comes from Dan Marshall, head golf professional at Buena Vista Country Club. It has to do with maintaining positive focus. “The old saying stands true — the hardest thing in golf is to control the six inches between the ears. There are a couple of tips to keep in mind during your round. who come to the shore are just here on weekends or One is to remain positive. Always try to take someshort stretches,” he says. “Over the years we’ve seen thing positive out of every shot. Always remind yourmany of the same people coming back and playing self that you can hit that green or make that putt. Two again, which says a lot for the golf course since they is to focus. It is important to take it one shot at a time. obviously enjoy playing here.” With every shot you should have a specific target, and Twisted Dune is part of Empire Golf Management’s should keep your eyes on the ball at all times. ClubMax program, which offers playing privileges “The last is to have fun. Golf is only a game, and it at six other exceptional clubs. It also has a series of is meant to be enjoyed.” — Ray Schweibert membership packages, including a “one-day” membership that entitles holders to play on a specific day of the week of their choosing. For these and special monthly packages, check out the club’s Web site (twisteddune.com). Public rates through Sept. 7 are $89 until noon Monday through Thursday, $80 from noon-2pm and $65 after 3pm. OCEAN CITY WEEKLY
OCEAN CITY EVENTS You can’t expect a little thing like the end of the summer season to knock a town like Ocean City off its stride. In fact, for the city, Labor Day is just the beginning of a host of events and concerts designed to take visitors through Halloween and beyond. The Ocean City Pops will not close up for the season for several weeks and will offer up a performace of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel Tuesday and Wednesday at the Music Pier. The Ocean City Tabernacle also continues its free concert series with series favorite John Taylor performing Sunday at 7pm. Also ongoing is a farmer’s market every Saturday through Oct. 3 from 9am-1pm at the annex at 9th and Asbury Avenue. Next weekend marks the city’s Street Rod Weekend from Sept. 11-13 and the weekend of the 19 and 20 marks the city’s annual airport festival and air show. So even if other towns think the season is over, Ocean City is just getting started. — Mike Pritchard

Dalia Raiyen
Selling ‘Lipstick’ Local music promoter Don Anthony has a hot new single from newcomer Dalia Raiyen By Michael Pritchard
I
T’S NOT UNUSUAL FOR FANS of hip-hop and club dance music to catch a hit disc produced with a decidedly southern New Jersey feel. Not with Pleasantville’s own Rodney Jerkins and his DarkChild Productions still churning out hits. But soon, another group of locals could also taste a little of the big time. Enter Dalia Raiyen, a former Galloway Township resident, who has just released a hot new dance track “Lipstick.” Raiyen has previously worked with Jadakiss, Yummy Bingham, and Lashawn Daniels, and has even been romantically linked in gossip columns to Billy Bob Thornton. With a good opening track record like that, what Raiyen needs the most is to get her music out there. And that job is falling to Atlantic City native Don Anthony. The 38-year-old is handling promotion for the new track and working with one
record company is happy, but have they made the right choices for you, for your fans, for your future? When you establish yourself as a successful independent artist, you keep a lot more independence when you sign that contract.” She also works to get her name out there. “I have a unique voice,” she says. “I work hard to keep it in condition. I spend a lot of time trying to become a better singer, a better songwriter. But people wouldn’t know I have a great voice if I wasn’t out there. I go to the schools and speak to kids, I do the radio-station promos and I put the work in. For Anthony, it’s now up to him to get “Lipstick” out there as well. “The way the music business operates now, it’s about songs rather than CDs,” he says. “Kids aren’t putting CDs on their iPods. They download songs. We want

of Dalia’s producers Santiago of Block Money Records (Raiyen’s label), also a former South Jersey resident. “She’s just a wonderful humanitarian,” he says of Raiyen. “She works with charities and causes. She helps African villages and she’s really been influenced by Michael Jackson. She wants to do for charities and people like he did. Really, I think she looks to her music to simply put her in position to help people.” In fact, it’s that desire to do charity work that has delayed Raiyen’s debut album by about three years, despite the release of the single “Show Me” with Jadakiss in 2006. In an interview with Atlantic City Weekly then, Raiyen, who was born in France and raised in Switzerland, says she is purposely staying with an independent label so she can grow at her own pace. “Being on your own label allows you to grow at a healthy pace,” Raiyen says. “You can sell a lot of singles and the
to let people hear ‘Lipstick.’ Once people hear her, it’s going to take off.” It’s not Anthony’s first experience with a hit single. Anthony worked with Vineland-based underground rappers Stormtrooperz, which released “Rains Falling,” a track that charted on hiphop and R&B charts about three years ago. But as an independent promoter, Anthony did not stay with the group. “We had a good partnership with them until the lawyers got involved,” he says. “That’s sort of the way of things when you get a hit and the record companies start calling. So we went our separate ways.” Anthony himself is a former performer, playing in a rock band as a teenager. “I’ve always loved music and I was drawn to it at a very early age,” he says. “As a child, music was really the only thing that made me happy. So I just sort of developed as an artist from there.” Anthony began writing songs at 11 and

We even had a sold-out concert once at Egg Harbor Township High School. It was a two-anda-half-hour show. We had that much material.” Eventually Anthony left music and began working with his father as an electrician, a job he says he hated. Slowly he drifted back into the music business and eventually met Raiyen’s producer Santiago. “Santiago really did take me under his wing and he taught me a lot about the business,” he says. “I had thought I really had something as a performer, but when I saw what he did and who he worked with, I realized I was nowhere near where I needed to be as an artist. But I took in everything he taught me and I learned the business. Eventually I decided that
was the direction I should move into, the business side and promotion.” He also did some work with DarkChild, but got another lesson in the business when Jerkins took a step up in the early ’90s. “At the time, it seemed like they were just cutting loose anyone who was independent, so maybe I had some bad feelings,” he says. “But now I know much more about the business and I realize they had to do that when they went with EMI. I understand it completely and we’ve even worked together since then.” He and Santiago are also teamed with another rising star, Bre Morgan of Radio Disney. “We’re very committed to her,” he says. “We don’t want to let her down.” But for the moment, all eyes, and ears are on Raiyen and “Lipstick.” If Anthony has his way, it will be one your iPod in just a few seconds. n see more online @

Salute to Dion at Memories O By Jerry Blavat
NC E A G A I N , G R E E T I N G S A N D salutations. Here it is, Labor Day Weekend. This is a special year because you have an extra week to play and have fun in the sun. And that’s true for the partying people who will be with me this weekend as we close our 38th season at Memories in Margate. We’re going non-stop Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Friday and Saturday, besides DJ Joel and yours truly, it’s the amazing spinning talents of DJ Chris Sounds. The young little fellow will be rocking the house at Memories just as he did on Thursdays. And then Sunday, Sept. 6, it’s a salute to Dion with the group that does it all, the horn section and the harmonies — the Bronx Wanderers. Close your eyes and you’ll think it’s Dion. So plan to be there. Now, time for your questions.
