THIS WEEK

Post Labor Day Pop A

JOIN NOW

S THE SUN SET OVER ATLANTIC City’s Marina district this past Monday — the tail end of another Labor Day holiday weekend — the lights on Harrah’s Waterfront Tower came blinking to life and the last Luau feast at The Pool was held for the summer. It was a busy weekend in the Atlantic City region. Then the beaches emptied. Stretches of headlights lit the Parkway heading north. A chilly breeze cut through the evening like a knife; the sky threatened rain. Curled leaves blew around on the sidewalks. Summer at the Jersey shore — over? Think again. As Ray Schweibert writes for this week’s cover story (p. 38), this is one of the most beautiful times of year in our region and there’s a lot going on during the last couple weeks of summer and into autumn. From festivals to live music to tag-free beaches and breathtaking nature, the Atlantic City region certainly pops post Labor Day. But it didn’t used to be like that as columnist Pinky Kravitz adds to Schweibert’s cover story in his column this week (p. 6). Also inside: Over at the Borgata, the casino hotel and spa’s latest dining venture, Fornelletto, gets a visit from our food writer Frank Gabriel (p. 28) who describes the restaurant’s “definitive New York City influence, both in menu and personality,” and calls the atmosphere “livelier” than Specchio, which formerly existed in the spot that Fornelletto now occupies. Anybody a fan of the human body? If so, Trump Marina is hosting the Atlantic City IFBB Pro Bodybuilding

Competition on Friday and Saturday (Sept. 11 & 12). Mike Pritchard gives the lowdown on page 42. Here are a few things to look out for this weekend — aside from less traffic in the area: The Good Old Days Festival, featuring “the music that made Somers Point Famous” (and a stellar slate of local musicians), takes place on Saturday (Sept. 12). Also, the Atlantic City In-Water Powerboat Show takes place Sept. 1013. Meanwhile, thousands of bikers will be heading down to Wildwood for the United Way fundraiser Roar to the Shore. You can read more about these events on page 8 in “Coasting.” If you’re a movie buff, you’ll enjoy Lori Hoffman’s late 2009 movie preview (p. 12), which profiles 10 highly anticipated flicks set for release later this year. Hoffman is currently up in Toronto to cover the Canadian city’s International Film Festival for another year. Check out acweekly.com for updates from Hoffman from Toronto, eh? Finally, a few concerts to keep on your radar: Blues guitar great Jimmy Thackery and his band The Drivers will play the finale of the Somers Point Beach Concert series (Sept. 11), funnyman Craig Robinson (The Office, Pineapple Express) does his stand-up at the Trump Plaza (Sept. 26), Bruce Hornsby checks into the Taj Mahal (Oct. 10), jazz pianist Kenny Barron performs at Stockton (Oct. 26) and Roger Daltrey comes to town at the Borgata for two shows (Nov. 13-14). Rock on. n

Is Summer Gone? A By Pinky Kravitz

T THIS TIME OF THE YEAR, OVER 30 YEARS ago, we would hear people saying, “turn out the lights and put up the bridges,” as there will be no one coming to the seashore after Labor Day. Isn’t it nice to note that 30 years later that’s no longer true? Labor Day has come and gone and Atlantic City and its environs continue to do business and have visitors coming year round. Although there are those who still believe Labor Day means that summer is over, those of us who live here at the Jersey shore know that is far from the truth. September and October are two of the nicest months of the year here. The temperature normally runs in the 70s and the ocean water is nice and warm. The beaches are open for you to enjoy free (no beach badges required). You will note that traffic has been greatly reduced throughout southern New Jersey and will remain that way, with the exception of weekends. This is the time of the year when localities hop down to the

The temperature normally runs in the 70s and the ocean water is nice and warm. beach after work and take a dip — but be careful as there are no lifeguards on duty, except in certain areas of some area beaches. It is now easier to get a reservation at your favorite restaurant. This is also the time to take advantage of the great sales that are in progress in most of the shops. We are most fortunate in having such a great selection of retail and restaurant units in our area. Many of them have learned the lesson from this past year’s Restaurant Week, be it in Atlantic City or Wildwood: By providing a moderate-priced special dinner menu, they will draw more local customers. I guess now you get it. We no longer have to worry about turning out the lights and putting up the bridge as Atlantic City and its environs have established themselves as a year-round exciting, delightful destination resort to visit if you want to have fun, good food, outstanding hotels, exciting casinos and plenty of shopping. I hope you’ll take advantage of what is offered here year round, but particularly now.

Boardwalk Bike Riding Update

There is good news for bike riders. Atlantic City’s City Council approved, and the mayor signed, a new ordinance changing the times for riding on the Boardwalk. For the first time, in too many years, the Atlantic City Boardwalk will permit bike riding from 6am to noon and from 4 to 6pm. This will allow those of you who live on Absecon Island and want to ride your bikes to and from work the opportunity to do so. You won’t have to worry about being chased off the Boardwalk on your way home or battle Pacific or Atlantic Avenue traffic and endanger your life. It also provides an oppor-

tunity for those who are free in the afternoons to ride in the 4-6pm hours. This brings me to the Atlantic City Regional Transportation Plan’s Project 20, “Bikeways on the Boardwalk,” which basically states, “the increasing number of visitors to Atlantic City and the lack of car ownership by city residents highlight the need to improve mobility and circulation. “Atlantic city streets currently provide few options for safe efficient travel by modes other than automobiles. The Atlantic City Boardwalk, while accessible for pedestrians, provides minimal transportation benefits for bicycles and other slow-speed wheel modes. ... [T]he lack of designated bicycle routes, lanes or trails anywhere in the city suggest safety for bicyclists and other slow-speed vehicle users has not been given sufficient consideration. Bicycling is an activity that vacationers enjoy at destination resort locations. Additionally, the number of scooters and Segways being used in destination locations has been increasing as more people are looking for ‘green’ alternatives to get around. “The strategy would be to construct a multi-use half of the Boardwalk that would serve bicycles and small, slow-speed vehicles. ... For eastbound travel, the path would follow a designated lane, separated from pedestrian traffic along the Boardwalk, with Boardwalk expansion where necessary. For westbound travel the past would consist of a new trail running parallel to the Boardwalk between it and the beach. This path would increase travel options for visitors and others and it would reduce the demand upon the roadway network for short, local trips. “There are key planning issues needed to assess the ability to create and maintain continuous designated lane areas on the Boardwalk and along the beach. ... It will be necessary to design a path compatible with Boardwalk businesses, pedestrian activity and environmental needs. And they will need to locate and design path access points. It is estimated the total cost of this project would be $26 million, good in 2008 dollars.” This is an excellent idea, one that our visitors and residents have been seeking for many years. However, there are major problems in instituting this project. One is how to get around or under the piers. Another major hurdle to the development of a bike path on the Boardwalk and the beach is how to set a lane for the moving vehicles that pedestrians would have to cross to go to the beach. However, it is good to see that consideration is being given to such a project in Atlantic City. n

Roaring into Wildwood

acweekly.com

Hopefully the sun will be shining this weekend in Wildwood, but if you hear the roar of thunder don’t fret. It’s likely just the annual Roar to the Shore motorcycle rally, the largest of its kind in the Northeast, taking place Thursday through Sunday, Sept. 10-13. Last year, through events like a poker walk, the Miss Roar to the Shore contest, the “rubber duck” boardwalk ride, a beer tent, stunt riders, raffles for a 2010 Harley Davidsion Street Bob and a Budweiser Mini Chopper, and other activities and entertainment, the rally raised over $13,000 for the United Way of Cape May County. The money is used to help feed and clothe the less fortunate. This year over 100,000 motorcyclists are expected to attend. Among the attractions will be a Marine Tribute Bike built in honor of all who served and are presently serving our country. The chopper will be on display at Kahuna’s Bar & Grill, 3817 Pacific Ave., in Wildwood on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 11-12, from 4-8pm. The bike was built by Larry Tremblay, owner of Crossroads Choppers in Newburgh, N.Y., in memory of his son, Cpl. Joseph Tremblay, U.S.M.C, who was killed by a roadside bomb on his second tour of Iraq about four years ago. — Ray Schweibert

Good Old Days Are Back

In 2008, rain wiped out a time honored tradition as Somers Point cancelled its yearly Good Old Days Festival. Sad though that is, it also means that the city is set to put on extra special festival this year. And the big draw as usual is the music that will be heard on three stages. Plucking bands from its own Friday night William Morrow beach summer concert series as well as acts well known through the Somers Point Jazz Society, the festival will present an all-star lineup. Scheduled to appear are the Bubba Mac Blues Band; an all-star band featuring Dr. Bobby Fingers, Bob Campanell, Danny Eyer and Howard Isaacson; popular country rock group, Hawkins Road and jazz favorite, The Bob Sterling Band. “We do feel we have a responsibility to put on really good acts,” says Somers Point Councilman Sean T. McGuigan. “No offense to anyone, but we don’t want to put on some garage band. This is a great tradition and people expect top quality acts.” In fact, the theme of the show is “The music that made Somers Point famous,” especially through the legendary former nightclub Tony Mart’s. But music isn’t the only attraction as there will be food, antique cars, children’s activities and more. “We usually draw between 7,000 to 8,000 people,” McGuigan says. “It’s a great tradition and a special day to wrap up the summer with your neighbors. And we even attract a lot of former residents who want to keep the tradition alive.” The free festival takes place Saturday (Sept. 12) at Kennedy Park, Somers Point from 11am-6pm. — Mike Pritchard

Fall Forges Ahead

Outdoor venues are shutting down for summer, but there’s no sign of stoppage in nightlife activity during the fall By Ray Schweibert

T

HE THREE BOARDWALK BEACH BARS WILL soon say bye-bye again after another successful summer season, and The Deck at Trump Marina has gone back to a weekends-only schedule for the remainder of September. But don’t take that as a sign of a slowdown in nightlife activity. Certain venues sort of yield to the plethora of live music and entertainment options during the summer, and will basically wait until fall to really kick into high gear, knowing that they now have a better shot at audiences’ undivided attention. Other venues simply migrate their entertainment indoors since it becomes a bit more brisk at night. Starting Sept. 24, and in conjunction with 103.7 The Shark radio, the Hard Rock Café (441-0007), located on the Boardwalk side of Trump Taj Mahal, will be offering free live music every Thursday night through October. The popular nightclub Memories in Margate ended its regular schedule last weekend, but owner Jerry Blavat can still be seen at the Atlantic City Country Club on Thursday, Sept. 17, from 5-7pm with the Bubba Mac Blues Band, and at La Costa Lounge in Sea Isle City on back-to-back Saturdays, Oct. 3 and 10. He’ll also host his popular Record Hop at the Wildwood Convention Center on Friday, Oct. 16, as part of the Sixth Annual Fabulous ’50s Weekend (Oct. 16-18). Following the tragic passing of club owner DJ AM (Adam Goldstein) on Aug. 28, Dusk Tuesdays will

continue at Caesars with DJ Jesse Marco, who has performed at some of the most high-profile events in the nation. Marco has DJed at parties for such celebrities as Spike Lee, Denzel Washington, Jay Z, Russell Simmons and Busta Rhymes. The Al Harrison Quintet will be jamming at Gregory’s Restaurant in Somers Point on Sunday, Sept. 20, at 8pm, to wrap up the Somers Point Blue Moon Summer Jazz Series. Call 927-6677 for more details. The Library III in EHT (645-7655) has adjusted its schedule for the fall, and will now include singer/songwriter Patty Blee every Tuesday and Thursday, Don Ellsworth every Sunday and Wednesday, Acoustic Fish on Fridays and Sharon Sable on Saturdays. All performances are 7-11pm in the lounge area. The 17th annual free Concerts on the Beach series continues this Friday night (7-9pm) at Somers Point’s William Morrow Beach with Jim Thackery and the Drivers. La Hacienda (652-6050) in Galloway will feature dance classes every Wednesday night, including tango and merenge on Sept. 16, and Cha Cha and Argentine Tango the following week. There is also live music there every Friday and Saturday night. Also in Galloway, the Athenian Garden will host Jazz Night every Tuesday on its second floor. A $20 cover includes live jazz and a hot-and-cold buffet. See acweekly.com for more details of these and other entertainment options coming up this fall. n see more online @

Former ‘Stars’ Sawyer Brown By David J. Spatz

AWYER BROWN, T H E L O N G running country band that hit the big time a quarter-century ago as the first-season vocal group winner on Star Search, wasn’t necessarily seeking fame and fortune when it tried out for the television talent showcase. Truth be told, the band’s agenda was simply to score a free demo tape when the five guys from Apopoka, Fla., auditioned for the show. “We fell into the TV show completely by accident,” says Sawyer Brown keyboard player Gregg “Hobie” Hubbard. “We certainly didn’t see it as a any great springboard. All we wanted was the videotape from the audition so we could pitch it around to get work.” Even if they had harbored some burning desire to hit it big on the show, the producers would have poured water on their fire, anyway. “They gave [us] the big death knell speech at the beginning, like, ‘You won’t hear back for months, most people won’t make it on the show, blah, blah, blah.’ And we’re like, ‘Yeah, whatever, when can we get the video tape?’” Hubbard tells me with a laugh during a phone call from his Nashville home. But just a week after the try-out, Sawyer Brown was told it made the cut and would appear on the show, which was hosted by the late Ed McMahon. For those of you just tuning in, Star Search, which debuted in 1983, was the American Idol of its day. But instead of the winners in various categories being basically chosen by speed-dialing television viewers, the acts were judged by a panel of four entertainment professionals. Winners returned the following week to meet a new challenger, and for 13 weeks, Sawyer Brown took on all comers and emerged as the last band standing, which earned them a check for $100,000. More importantly, it introduced the band to millions of potential fans. “I think it was a learning experience about what the power of television could be,” Hubbard says. “To get a little bit of your music exposed to that many people was incredibly helpful to us.” Not long after winning the top prize on the television show, Sawyer Brown signed a recording contract with Capitol

Records in a partnership with Curb Records. Before long, the band’s second single, “Step That Step,” was sitting at the top of the country-music chart. Ironically, Capitol was one of the record labels that had taken a pass on Sawyer Brown right before Star Search. “We had done showcases for every label in Nashville and every label said the same thing: ‘You guys are awfully young, you move around a lot, nobody’s wearing a cowboy hat, where are the boots?’” Hubbard remembers. Simply put, Sawyer Brown, which performs Saturday, Sept. 12, at the Atlantic City Hilton, didn’t fit the traditional country music mold or have the pure country sound that was just beginning to cross over into mainstream music. It’s not that the band didn’t want to conform to the rules of the country music establishment. It was just a matter of them being a little clueless. “We didn’t know what everyone else was doing [in country music] because we were too busy working every night,” he says. Although Sawyer Brown wasn’t a household name at the time, they weren’t exactly complete unknowns, especially in the south. A spin-off of country-pop singer Don King’s road band, the group was averaging 300 gigs a year — five sets a night, six nights a week — before it auditioned for Star Search. The band moved away from its country-pop roots and began focusing on a modern country sound in the early 1990s. Hubbard isn’t a big believer in labels, yet he understands labels are necessary in order to sell a product, especially when it comes to music. “As a music lover, I kind of shy away from labels, so there’s just two labels in my book — stuff I like and stuff I don’t like,” he says. “We just sort of let the music dictate the way it needs to sound. We were never believers that you had to follow some formula or pattern.” n

Fornelletto

Borgata’s Little Oven

Fornelletto mixes trattoria-style fare with formal dining and a New York City influence

Address: The Borgata, A.C. Phone: 1-866-MYBORGATA Hours: Call for hours and reservations Details: Liquor license; major credit cards accepted

By Frank Gabriel

I

N A CASINO COMPLEX WHOSE appellation derives from the Italian word for “village,” Fornelletto restaurant now plays the indispensable role of the house’s standard-bearer for that revered cuisine. Dining over Labor Day weekend, we took note of many small, but significant changes made since conversion from its original occupant, Chef Lucas Palladino’s Specchio/Ombra. First and foremost, there is a definitive New York City influence, both in menu and personality. Which only makes sense, since Fornelletto’s creator and executive chef, Stephen Kalt, is a native of our neighbor to the north. The atmosphere is livelier, even boisterous at times. Kalt’s menu, broader than at Specchio, offers casual, trattoria-style fare and fine, formal options. A simple appetizer began the evening’s gastronomic proceedings: Castelvetrano olives, tossed with diced pecorino toscano cheese and toasted almonds. The olives were an incredible bright green hue and possessed a surprising, sweet essence. Paired with the soft sheep’s milk cheese and crunchy nuts, we were eager to assist our companion in finishing her bowlful. My trio of stuffed zucchini flowers were artful, delicate and wispy. Piped with a minted mix of goat cheese and avocado

The latest in Borgata dining

they had been barely coated in batter, and then fried with great care not to damage the vegetative shells. The result was a golden, heavenly, just-so exterior, yielding to a warm, luscious center. Since Fornelletto translates as “little oven” in the language of romance, we absolutely wanted to sample one of the kitchen’s dozen or so stylish pizzas. Settling after much negotiation on a Sicilian version, we were pleased at the pause in service between courses. This served to indicate the pie hadn’t been “fired” until

our app plates had been returned, fully empty, we might add, to the kitchen. The pizza’s soft, pliable crust had been allowed to bubble and mildly darken in spots. Topped with roasted peppers and pungent fennel sausage, the six-slice pie could have easily functioned as an ideal lunch or light dinner on its own. The very finest item on this night was my tagliarini, a thinner version of linguine. The turban of clearly fresh-made pasta was tossed with jumbo lump crab, sea urchin butter, sea asparagus and oven

dried tomatoes. This tasty confluence brought a delightful aroma and heady oceanic flavor, courtesy of the exotic sea urchin’s influence. It also cleverly portrayed the colors of the Italian flag: white pasta, green from the aquatic asparagus and a chunky, red tomato sauce. From the fish portion of the bill of fare, our other selection was a basil-crusted sword. Cut into a filet, the faultless piece of rectangular white fish took on the appearance of a classic scaloppini. Coated with a regal, verdant crust, the lovely late-summer taste paired elegantly with the plate’s colorful garnishes, a blend of artichokes, peas, fava beans and diced asparagus. Seeing a favorite ingredient, nutella, was all the convincing we needed to try the dark chocolate budino for dessert. Recreated authentically as an airy mousse of chocolate and hazelnut, it had been formed into a disc, structured atop a layer of textural butter crunch. Presented on a sexy tearshaped plate, a similar shape formed by a spoon of ivory-white mascarpone cream finished the sweet composition. Closing out our evening, a Sicilian ice cream sandwich brought a pretty brioche bun filled with excellent house-made vanilla gelato and drizzled with thousand flowers honey. n E-mail Frank Gabriel at fgabriel@acweekly.com

A Sure Thing By Ray Schweibert

For many, the weeks immediately following Labor Day are the best to be ‘downa shore’

N THE AFTERMATH OF 400,000 flower children descending upon his upstate New York farmland 40 years ago, it’s easy to imagine Max Yasgur mouthing the words “Thank God that’s over” when the mud finally dried and normalcy was restored. Maybe it’s a stretch to liken Woodstock to what occurs each summer at the southern New Jersey shore, but not much of one in the eyes of many who live here year round. Until you experience it, full-time residents in, say, Cherry Hill have no real handle on the difference between what life’s like in a shore town in mid-July, and what it’s like in that same shore town after Labor Day weekend. You might feel a bit like a Civil War soldier emerging intact from the Battle of Gettysburg. “The weather is outstanding, the crowds have waned, the fishing is nice, you can get a parking space on your street, everyone is more relaxed, you can listen to both football and baseball on your radio while basking in the sun, you can take your dogs on the beach again, you can still grill outdoors with friends, you can run on the beach without tripping into a hole that someone dug,” says Mary Moyer, public relations manager for Trump Entertainment Resorts. “Summer doesn’t [officially] end until Sept. 22, then we get Indian [or to be politically correct, Native American] Summer.”

These are not sentiments that are unique to any particular shore community, or ones that only began to be expressed recently. And it isn’t necessarily the locals or the year-rounders who see September and October as potentially the best months of the year to be here. Try telling a suburban Philly high-school kid that September at the shore is where it’s at, and you’ll likely get a “What are you, nuts?” kind of response, but as those of us in the “secret society” realize, it can be the best time of year for many reasons. “The list is endless,” says Cheri Morrison, a former fulltime Stone Harbor resident who currently resides in Harleysville, Pa. “It’s like having your own private island. You don’t need reservations for meals, rental prices drop by more than half, parking is not an issue and sometimes free after the season, there’s no beach tags, you can take your dogs on the beach — there’s no kids! — OK, perhaps I put a little too much enthusiasm into that last point. There’ no traffic going to and from, the boaters know how to boat, the water for skiing is much calmer, there are sales everywhere for that end-of-season shut down, hotels have long weekend stays and meal deals, there are no flies or mosquitoes, the sand doesn’t feel like you’re sitting on a broiler plate, there’s gorgeous sunrises and sunsets that are more colorful with the variance in temperatures from day to night

— those are just a few things off the top of my head.” September is also Margate resident Jeff Bohrer’s favorite month, and not just because weather conditions are more agreeable and he has an easier time parking his car. “Jersey tomatoes and corn are still in season, the plums and peaches are outstanding, and the blue claw crabs at Crabby’s are the biggest of the year,” says Bohrer. “The bad thing, though, is getting caught behind a school bus on the way to work — you’re bound to be late.” From a business perspective, landlords and real-estate agents see the fall as a second major wave of clientele. Sid Morgan is an agent at Astick Realty in Brigantine who says the vacation rental market stays fairly strong through the end of September and into October. “Characteristically Labor Day is the end of the rental season, so what owners do, who want to continue to rent, is drop their rates generally 20 to 30 percent in September,” says Morgan. “You can get an oceanfront home for a much better price, and the weather’s still beautiful with less congestion in town and on the beaches. I also have people coming down in September and October on weekends, which is not a type of rental we do in the summer. A weekly rental in summer goes from Saturday to Saturday, so if you rented a place for just a weekend you’d

conceivably kill two weeks.” Jim Fowler is the owner of St. George’s Pub in Brigantine. He says that his profit margin generally stays fairly strong through the end of November, at which time business slows to a crawl until the spring thaw. “This time of year the pace slows down enough to give you time to catch up on things,” says Fowler. “Most stores, and not just mine, are so overwhelmed with business in July and August they have trouble keeping up. I mean, even in the hardware store, they’ll put 22 items on a shelf that will be gone in one day, and now they can put 22 items on a shelf that’ll last all week. There’s parking issues in the summer, the refrigeration has trouble keeping pace, the walk-in box, freezer and beer boxes can’t hold enough for the demand — in the fall you can maintain a better pace and produce a better product. In the winter things really get tough, but you can’t do what we used to do in the old days, which is basically to shut down the town and take the winter off. If you did that now you’d lose too much of your customer base.” Fowler is also a charter-boat captain who scaled back on that side of his business when gas prices soared last summer. “Last year I got so crunched by fuel costs I lost a lot of business, and this year I didn’t try to revive it,” he says. “I’m satisfied handling the few I’ve got.” n see more online @

Green Tree general manager and PGA pro John Hammer conducts the camps and clinics, and is available for private lessons. Greens fees are $21 to walk and $35 to ride during the week, and $26 to

Golf Pro Tip: This week’s tip comes from John Hammer, general manager and head PGA golf professional at Green Tree Golf Course in EHT. It has to do with building a little extra power. “Almost everyone wants to get more distance. Here’s a drill that will help you ‘release’ the club through impact — a vital key to greater clubhead speed and longer shots. “When you take your grip, separate your hands on the club by about an inch. Apply all fingers to the club, then make full practice swings. You should be able to ‘feel’ the clubhead release through the impact zone. You should also feel a little more ‘snap’ in your downswing. “Next, practice hitting balls from a tee using your walk, $40 to ride on weekends. Discounts are offered natural swing. This free release should promote solid to Atlantic County residents, seniors and juniors with contact and more distance. Also, since the clubface is proof of ID. Hours of operation are dawn to dusk. The closing through impact, the ball should draw from right par-5 third hole is its longest at 596 yards from the to left and roll a bit further.” expert tees, and is the course’s most challenging, says — Ray Schweibert

T WAS IN 1965 AT THE Brooklyn Academy of Music when the world of bodybuilding changed. On that night Larry Scott, the star bodybuilder of his time, took the first ever title of Mr. Olympia. Sure other titles existed — Mr. America, Mr. World and Mr. Universe — but Scott had won them all already. With his first Mr. Olympia title (he would win again in 1966 before retiring) Scott gave publisher and promoter Joe Weider the start he needed to build up his fledgling contest and his International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness (IFBB). Weider recognized that for the sport of bodybuilding to survive, his athletes needed regular competitions and shows. He would create a schedule of events, which, 39 years later, now includes the Atlantic City Pro event, this Friday and Saturday (Sept. 11-12) at Trump Marina. Mr. Olympia hit the big time in 1969 when a young Austrian named Arnold Schwarzenegger competed for the first time. The future California governor lost to Sergio Oliva, a threetime winner. Schwarzenegger would take the title in 1970 and would win five more in succession. Three notable events occurred during the run, including a ’72 showdown with Oliva, which fans still argue about, a ’74 showdown with Lou Ferrigno and the 1975 documentary Pumping Iron, which launched Schwarzenegger’s acting career. For Weider, however, it was names like these that would cement bodybuilding into the culture and keep his league going strong. Weider would also be at the forefront of the steroids and doping controversies, instituting steroids tests and other controls in the 1980s. Though Weider’s publishing career began in 1940 with the magazine Your Physique, it’s always been the sport itself he’s loved. “I may be best known as a publisher, but my brother and I were always promoters at heart,” Weider says in a quote off the IFBB Web site. “Throughout our history, we have been blessed with dedicated, hardworking promoters who take

finisher for Ms. Olympia. She also holds a doctorate degree in pharmacy, which she uses in her day job of a consultant at a regional poison center in Maryland.

Gustavo Badell — Born in Venezuela, Badell now lives in Puerto Rico. Gustavo stands only 5’8” but weighs in on stage at a ripped 240 pounds. Originally Badell was a kick boxer and boxer who took on weight-lifting to gain weight and bulk. That led to a bodybuilding career. After a slow start, Badell has risen to be one of the most popular performers on the IFBB tour.

For Joe Weider, it was names like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sergio Oliva and Lou Ferrigno that would cement bodybuilding into the culture and keep his IFBB league going strong. great pride in providing the stage upon which our athletes compete.” That stage shifts constantly. Over the decades Mr. Olympia shows have traveled the globe. The Atlantic City Pro is one of the last competitions before the Olympia contest.

The Judging In a pro bodybuilding competition, competitors are divided by weight class gender and size. They are judged both for bodybuilding and fitness. According to the IFBB, “Certain objective criteria are involved in assessing symmetry and natural aesthetics in competitive bodybuilding. Of great significance are the qualities of balance, proportion and the overall ‘flow’ of the physique, including classic

attributes such as a dramatic ‘V-taper’; from broad shoulders and a wide back to a streamlined waist and a flat, muscular abdomen. In addition, there should be balance between upper and lower body development, and harmony between the left and right sides of the body.” Judges award points in several body categories in several rounds of judging.

The Bodybuilders Here’s a look at some of the star bodybuilders scheduled to compete in the Atlantic City Pro.

James Flex Lewis — Born in Wales, Lewis has won both the Mr. Wales and Mr. Britain titles several times. He now lives in Tennessee. He attributes his interest in the sport to a book by Tom Platz he read as a child. From that day on he wanted to have huge legs. Add to that a love of Schwarzenegger films and a bodybuilder is born.

Nicole Ball — A fast-rising star, Ball overcame an eating disorder early on and credits bodybuilding with helping her change her life. She parlayed a first place finish in her weight class in Atlantic City last year as a springboard for Ms. Olympia, where she placed eighth. This year could be the charm.

Melvin Anthony — Last year’s heavyweight male winner, Anthony is originally from California. Anthony got into pro bodybuilding in the early ’90s after suffering a knee injury that ended a promising college football career. He is a devoted Christian and has numerous Bible verses posted on his Web site. He parlayed his A.C. win into a 6th place finish in Mr. Olympia.

Mah-Ann Mendoza — Last year she placed No. 2, setting up a showdown Lisa Aukland — The winner of the again with Auckland. Mendoza is a suc2008 Atlantic City show and on a win- cessful fitness trainer who offers a numning streak here since 2006, American ber of exercise programs. Need Extra Bread? T By Whitney Ullman

HESE DAYS, I CAN’T TURN THE corner without someone telling me about some type of relationship marketing company (RMC). And if you’re not currently hooked up with one — not of the eHarmony variety, read on — then it is sometimes hard to grasp the concept of some of these types of (usually) webbased companies. Most times the income part or even the benefit of the product can seem too good to be true. I was one of those skeptical people before — but then I figured what’s the worst that can happen? I took a shot with a company that sells a health product and boy did I do the right thing. Not only has it helped me as well as many people in my life in terms of health, but now I am also earning residual income. Many of us think that all of these “workfrom-home”-type companies are pyramid schemes. Half of us don’t even know

the company. Three, do something that you believe in. Four, be able to handle rejection. Five, understand the company’s compensation plan. Six, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Long story short, I got three others and myself into a local hot spot on Saturday night without a blink of an eye — but our group had nine other friends anxiously waiting to get in — and after close to three hours waiting, they never got in! Paying customers! To me, this seems unacceptable — no matter the venue. These places are a lot of fun and definitely something special in the Atlantic City area, so we should all try to portray that and make anyone who is willing to wait and pay feel special as well. n
