A slew of the most rad young wave riders will be in town with their bevy of beach bunnies for a Surfing America Prime East event Friday through Sunday, Sept. 28-30. Recognized by the International Surfing Association as the U.S. national governing body for the sport, Surfing America will be hosting its inaugural Prime East event of the year at Revel Beach.

“Prime” is the highest level of junior surfing in the nation, and competitors from all over the East Coast will descend on Atlantic City to test their skills against their fellow best in an effort to qualify for the USA Championships (slated for southern California in June 2013), and/or to possibly earn a spot on the prestigious PacSun USA Surf Team. The event is open to public spectating free of charge, so stop by to see some of the most “Off the Richter” young talent the nation has to offer. Competition is set for 8am-4pm Saturday and Sunday, depending on surf and tides. On Friday from 3-6pm, PacSun USA Junior Surf Team coach Ryan Simmons will conduct a free coaching clinic for competitors, and Association of Surfing Professionals judge Gordon Lawson will hold a short judging clinic on Saturday starting 7:30am. “We are super stoked to have Revel host our event in Atlantic City,” says Surfing America executive director Greg Cruse. “The resort is amazing and, combined with the wide sandy Revel Beach, we couldn’t ask for a better venue for our event.” Saturday’s slate also includes the Atlantic City Surf School’s hosting free surf lessons for Boys and Girls Club of Atlantic City members (see acsurfschool.com). PacSun USA Surf Team members and Surfing America Prime surfers will be lending a hand as guest instructors.

A.C. Teeing Off as Premier Golf Destination

The Greater Atlantic City Golf Association (GACGA) has announced its mission to establish the Atlantic City region as a premier golf destination. With the merging of a distinguished set of 18 courses and two golf packagers, the GACGA hopes to lure golf travelers to the area where they can also enjoy a wide variety of entertainment during both the summer months and the off-season. Previously Atlantic City spent relatively little on marketing golf, which will change as the GACGA teams up with the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority to create specific advertising that targets a key market. Since the golf tourist spends about 50 percent more than the average traveler, the initiative to define Atlantic City as a leading destination resort expects to advance the region’s tourism revenue. As of 2010, the impact of golf on Atlantic City’s economy is the lowest among East Coast competitors, bringing in only $7 million yearly — a fraction of Myrtle Beach’s $660 million.

By shifting advertising and promotional focus toward the 18 courses within a 60-mile radius, the GACGA plans to attract an increased number of golfers who typically stay longer and spend more, thus boosting the region’s economy. “This new initiative will provide a powerful economic impact with a substantial return on the investment that will ultimately stimulate the Atlantic City marketplace, and positively impact revenues through golf players visiting the region,” says Tom Sullivan, president of GACGA and general manager of McCullough’s Emerald Golf Links in EHT. Also helping to spotlight the GACGA is its new “Ambassador of Golf,” former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Ron Jaworski, who will be featured in the campaign as a celebrity spokesperson.

Capitalism, the media, the French Riviera, the late bluesman John Lee Hooker, the individual, “phony pseudo jazz,” and “all kinds of shite” aren’t new topics for Van Morrison to wrap his songs around, but on his upcoming Blue Note recording, Born to Sing: No Plan B, the Belfast Bluesman finds new paths to get these — and other — thoughts across. As on most of his albums since the 1990s, Morrison produced the 10-song set, which is painted throughout with Hammond organ, horns and a jazz-friendly, soulful tint. On songs such as “Open the Door (To Your Heart),” “End of the Rainbow,” “If in Money We Trust” and the bluesy closing cut “Educating Archie,” the 67-year-old Irish singer-songwriter not only proves that he was indeed born to sing, but that his music and meditations are as relevant today as “Brown-Eyed Girl,” “Moondance” and “Into the Mystic” were in the 1960s. — Jeff Schwachter

Paulaner is a Munich-based brewery and founding host of Germany’s famed Oktoberfest since 1810 (this year’s 16-day festival kicked off Saturday, Sept. 22, in Munich). The A.C. fest may be significantly smaller but very similar in its authenticity, as Golden Nugget teamed with Paulaner to expand last year’s single-day event to three days outdoors, and is bringing back its indoor Craft Beer Tasting on Saturday, Sept. 29, from 7-10pm in the Grand.

“What we’ve created is a German-style, old-fashioned beer garden [on the Deck], making it very similar to what you’d see in Munich, Germany this time of year,” says Scott Tarwater, Landry’s corporate director of wine and special events. “We’ve partnered with Paulaner, the original Munich beer-fest host that’s been around since 1654, and making beer that entire time. We’ll have two Paulaners on tap — Oktoberfest and Hefeweizen — along with full representation of the 40 breweries that are part of [Saturday’s] craft beer tasting. We’re dubbing it ‘crafts and drafts.’ We’ll be singing songs, doing dances like the beer-barrel polka and the famous chicken dance, probably doing some beer-mug hoisting contests, and we’ll have a full-blown sound system of authentic Oktoberfest music [as well as the Deck’s regular slate of live music featuring Sleeveless Hearts on Friday (7pm), No Pressure (2pm) and Seven Stone (7pm) on Saturday, and the Exceptions (2pm) on Sunday].”

all-inclusive $49 per person. Along with pumpkin ales and seasonal samplings from more than 40 breweries (from the more locally based like Flying Fish, N.J. Beer Company, Dogfishhead and Yards to those from Oregon to Maine) there will be chefinspired cuisine, live music and a book signing by Gary Monterosso, author of the complete beerdrinker’s guide called Artisan Beer.

Admission to the outdoor festival is free each day, with all food and drink will be served a la carte.

“It’s pay as you go, so you just let your sexy beer maiden know what you want,” says Tarwater. “There will be three different styles of brats, two different styles of handmade pretzels, and a variety of spicy mustards that are traditional in Germany. Paulaner drafts and all craft beers will be $5 apiece.”

The Chart House restaurant, adjacent to the Deck, will be adorned with 30by six-foot, blue-and-white checkered Paulaner banners, and Paulaner also provided a 16-tap refrigerated beer truck to optimize quality.

“It’s a full-blown refrigerated keg operation with eight taps on either side of the truck, keeping beer at perfect temperatures and calibrated so that it pours perfectly,” says Tarwater.

“Often times these events are done with kegs set in trash cans filled with ice and pumped with air — similar to what you might find at a college frat party. Most of the time the beer comes out pretty well, but not always. The truck eliminates the guess work, and the beer pours perfectly.” n

E HAS ONE OF THE MOST eclectic careers in or out of show business: Attorney; mayor of a major American city; TV news anchor for a network affiliate; political consultant; host of a long-running, syndicated talk show; actor in movies, on television shows and even on Broadway; recording artist and game show host.

All of which begs the question: Jerry Springer, what do you want to be when you grow up? “I’m looking for something I can do and then I’ll settle on it,” the affable and surprisingly soft-spoken entertainer says with a small laugh.

Speaking on the set of the live game show The Price Is Right, which he’s hosting at Harrah’s Resort through Oct. 21, Springer quickly and easily admitted success has come easily for the 68-year-old former trial lawyer.

“I’ve been really lucky,” he says. “I’ve had these great jobs, [but] it really is luck. I mean, I work hard, but lots of people work hard. But I just got lucky, and I’m very grateful.”

They say you should never count someone else’s money. But it’s hard to believe that after hosting one of the longest-running and most highly-rated talk shows on daytime television for 21 years that Springer would need to supplement his income by helming a live version of another long-running TV game show in an Atlantic City casino.

Truth be told, he doesn’t. With various sources including Forbes magazine putting his net worth at $75 million, Springer acknowledges that he isn’t kibitzing and joking with casino customers for the paycheck.

“It’s not the money. I’m lucky, I don’t need [money] any more,” he says. “I just enjoy working, and I enjoy live shows. I enjoy interacting with regular people, not celebrities, just regular people. And this gives me an opportunity to do that. This becomes a comedy show. I mean, there are rules to the game, but I’m joking around with the contestants all the time. I just love doing that. That’s fun.”

The live version of The Price Is Right mirrors the television show that’s been airing regularly since 1956. The set, the games — even some of the prizes, including a new car — are virtually identical to the TV version.

And Springer is right in the middle of all the fun, cracking jokes with and about the contestants, zinging them with ad-libs that are funny but never insulting and moving the 80-minute show along with a glib and good-natured attitude.

“They know that if I’m hosting, it’s not going to be the traditional game show host,” Springer says. “There’s nothing slick about me, so they’re going to get a little bit of com-

edy from me, and we have great fun.”

The game show is a complete departure from his syndicated Jerry Springer Show, which began airing as a traditional talk show in 1991 and morphed into a mayhem-filled slugfest about three years later.

The Springer show made the switch from mainstream to tabloid to pursue a different audience. The program debuted as one of 20 talk shows all chasing the same audience demographic that had been monopolized

by Oprah Winfrey and now-retired chat show talker Phil Donahue.

When Ricki Lake brought her talk show to television and began targeting a younger audience with her subject matter, Springer’s producers decided to chase Lake rather than try to compete for Winfrey’s audience of “middle-aged housewives,” Springer explains.

“We decided we were only going to have young people in the audience, young people on stage and young subject matter,” he says. “Young people, by definition, are much wilder in their lives, much more open.

And the show started to go crazy.”

When the Springer show was acquired by Universal, the new owners were adamant the program remain completely over the top.

“Universal bought us and said from now on, you’re only allowed to do crazy,” he says.

“It’s in the contract. So ... if you call us with a warm uplifting story, we are required to send you to another [talk] show. We’re only allowed to do stories that are either inappropriate, outrageous or outside the mainstream. So I know every day they’re going to hand me a script with a story that’s out of the mainstream.”

A one-time Congressional candidate who lost an election in 1970, Springer was elected to Cincinnati city council in 1971 and served as mayor for one year. He also tried but failed to win the Democratic nomination for Ohio governor in 1982.

He remains passionate about politics — he calls it the most important thing in his life besides his family — and has been giving speeches in Ohio in support of President Barack Obama’s reelection.

At the same time, he’s also hosting a new dating show called Baggage, which debuted in national syndication two weeks ago. n

As you know, this Saturday it’s the annual Baby Boomers Rock & Roll Revival at La Costa in Sea Isle City. Then on to Wildwood in October for Fabulous ’50s weekend. And then, before you know it, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and then the holidays. We’ve often said it: Where does the time go? I guess it’s because we are so active in our daily lives that time seems to fly by. But one thing is for sure: the Geator is on the move, even though we’re not down at the shore as much as we were during the summertime. Newcomers and weekenders seek it out, but it’s the locals that help give the Atlantic City Bar and Grill its down-home charm. By Frank Gabriel

ALKING INTO ATLANTIC CITY Bar and Grill on a warm, latesummer weekday afternoon, the very first person we encountered was former state senator and political power broker Bill Gormley. Hunkered down, deep in conversation with a colleague, he looked perfectly at ease.

Yeah, this is that kind of a joint.

Or, in the words of co-owner Gino Garofalo, who along with elder brother Ron now runs the venerable restaurant, “it has developed into a landmark, one of the places that has to be visited when you come to A.C.” The brothers, whose parents Eris and Vittorio opened at this site as Mama Tucci’s Pizzeria 36 years ago, have since expanded to create an enterprise virtually serving as a microcosm of the city itself.

Glance at the walls of the main bar/ lounge and you’ll see them chock full of photos of celebrities captured while they reveled here in town. But don’t be confused — this remains a decidedly blue-collar place, popular with tradesmen enjoying a hearty midday meal on any typical day.

Along with a main dining area, Atlantic City Bar and Grill accommodates about 150 patrons, with a private party space upstairs for another 200. Another major draw here is its accessibility as one of the few places in town that remains open well into the wee hours of the morning.

When asked how this enterprise has developed, Gino explains that he and Ron “grew up making pizzas and Italian specialties.” It’s a Calabrian family heritage that translated as authentic southern Italian cuisine, in all its tomato- and pasta-based

The story of how their current business came to be really starts in 1985, when a building next door was purchased, allowing for expansion. At that time, they renamed the eatery Tucci’s Restaurant and Bar, keeping that moniker for just over a decade.

In January 1997, a third phase was ushered in with the establishment’s re-branding as the Atlantic City Bar and Grill. While wisely maintaining the pizza and Italian

dishes that made them famous, the menu expanded dramatically. That meant the addition of seafood … lots of seafood.

Quickly rattling off names of multiple fish purveyors used by the establishment, Gino allows that purchases — made daily — depend upon “who’s got what we need.”

Among the most popular items are zuppe de pesce — shrimp, scallops, calamari, clams and mussels over linguine with a choice of either marinara or aglio olio (garlic and olive oil) sauces.

Lobster is another big draw, with a house specialty pound-and-a-half whole crusta-

cean value-priced at only 25 bucks. Garofalo similarly raves about their Maryland-style, pan-seared crab cakes, describing the jumbo lump-based creations “out of this world.”

From the selections of land-based dishes, he talks up their BBQ baby back ribs, available either solo or as “Boardwalk Surfand-Turf,” served alongside a full pound of snow crab legs. The pork ribs are, says Garofalo, “slow cooked for six hours” prior to being finished with “our homemade BBQ sauce, a secret recipe.”

When asked about the nature of their extensive customer base, Gino explains that roughly one-third are locals — often regulars — another third are out-of-towners who make a habit of patronizing while in town, and the final third are first-timers.

And why not?

Along with having a wide variety of affordable, terrific food in prolific portions, the place practically screams ‘Have fun!’ from the moment you arrive. Interiors, in addition to those photographs, are filled with a colorful, entertaining assortment of Atlantic City-based historic memorabilia.

This includes an original, wrought-iron street sign from the location’s Pacific and South Carolina intersection, anchoring the bar’s furthest edge. It’s an ambiance not unlike stepping into a living, breathing, beverage-and-victual-serving version of a Monopoly board.

We can only hope the lads of Aerosmith will opt to stop in late night after their justannounced Revel gig Friday, Nov. 23 — if only to partake of the “Big Ten Inch” pizza, which shares its name with the title of a snappy little number on the group’s 1975 release Toys in the Attic. n

During his 20s, Carolla worked a lot of odd jobs before catching a break in 1995 by scoring the co-hosting gig on the nationally syndicated radio show Loveline, with Dr. Drew Pinsky.

“I worked a lot of under-the-table construction jobs trying to survive when I was young,” Carolla says. “I had some lean times.”

But Carolla can laugh about it now and so can his fan base since he is adept at delivering self-deprecating material.

“It’s about getting laughs,” Carolla says. “The only rule I have for myself is not to repeat myself when I come back to a city. All that matters is that I get laughs and we all have an experience.”

Carolla looks back with pride when talking about The Man Show, which featured he and his pal Jimmy Kimmel, who has become a popular late-night talk show host.

The Man Show was about as much fun as you can have,” Carolla says.

“That’s especially so when I start the show with ‘What can Adam complain about?’” Carolla says.

Carolla often asks the audience to shout out topics and he will react to them.

“That’s not an easy thing to do,” Carolla adds. “It’s not like hanging on the beach, but it’s my job and I somehow come through.”

You never know what the co-creator of the cult hits, The Man Show and Crank Yankers and the star of the underheralded film The Hammer, will do when he hits the stage.

“It’s fun to be unpredictable,” Carolla says. “I might start off by telling a story about doing The Tonight Show with Queen Latifah or talking about how pathetic my social security payout will be. I’ve brought my social security statement out onstage and it’s pretty pathetic. There are a lot of

IFE IS ABOUT EXPERIENCES, NOT fun for Adam Carolla. That’s the reason the comic/actor/radio host agreed to perform on Dancing With The Stars in 2008. That’s why he appeared on the last edition of Donald Trump’s Celebrity Apprentice, which aired last winter.

“The reason you do these shows is not because it’ll be a good time, but because it’ll be an interesting experience,” Carolla tells Atlantic City Weekly while calling from his Los Angeles home.

“When I did Dancing With The Stars and shot The Apprentice, it was anything but fun. However when you look back on your life, you appreciate the experiences you had. Going to Disneyland is fun. Getting high is fun. Doing Celebrity Apprentice is the most work you’ll do in Hollywood without getting paid since the money you earn goes to your favorite charity.

I worked hard, but I didn’t get paid for The Apprentice.”

Carolla, who will perform Saturday,

“What I loved about that show was what I love about stand-up. We had so much autonomy. We sometimes argued about content, but it was nothing that was too big a deal. For the most part we could just go out there and be as funny as we could be.

Overall, that was a great experience.”

It certainly beat Carolla’s early preshow biz experience.

“It was a huge step up from construction,” Carolla says. “I was miserable doing construction. I wanted something that paid good money because I liked nice things, but that takes a lot out of you and I wanted to do stand-up. Fortunately, it all worked out for me, but I put in a lot of hard work.”

His work co-hosting the nationally syndicated radio show Loveline was also hard work.

“I like radio because it’s not scripted,” Carolla says. Loveline was an interesting experience. What I liked about it most was that there was no BS with it. It was pretty straightforward and there is so much BS in the world of entertainment in Hollywood.

It was great to be able to say whatever I wanted to say. There was no pretention. I hope I made a difference. I cared while I was on the air, but when I left the studio, I thought about other things. That’s just the way it was.

“I’m glad I’m past Loveline. It’s been nice the way my career has progressed.

I’ve come a long way from construction and from Loveline. I’ve always had a good sense of humor, but I never thought I would ultimately make any money from it. But everything worked out for me. I couldn’t be more fortunate. I make a nice living doing what I love. I get to go onstage and make people laugh. I don’t think I could ask for anything more than this. It’s been phenomenal.”

Carolla applauds his old pal Kimmel and his extraordinary success.

“It’s great for him,” Carolla says.

“Jimmy is a very talented person.

He’s doing his thing and I’m doing mine. I don’t think anyone has any complaints.” n

from Paul Thomas Anderson (There Will Be Blood), might get some Oscar consideration for stars Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix, but it lacks an emotional connection. We are kept at arm’s length by this tale about a cult leader in the 1950s that may or may not be based on the birth of Scientology.

The Master is a beautifully crafted and photographed visit: period piece, set in the early 1950s, that never gives us a way in to connect with the characters. Hoffman, as the titled character Lancaster Dodd, is a bullshit artist whose raging ego — and, I suspect, his desire to get laid — has led him to his career path of creating a new religion. He is so full of himself he even believes his bunk, and is therefore shocked when the occasional police officer or reporter calls him a fraud.

One of Dodd’s most devoted followers is Freddie Quell (Phoenix), whose war experience in the Navy has left him damaged and searching for direction. He is a perfect prey for Dodd’s spellbinding crap. The fact that Quell is dangerous, with serious angermanagement issues, makes him a nice ally to have when a non-believer makes the mistake of making sense in his argument that Dodd is little more than a cult leader and charlatan.

The performances by Hoffman and Phoenix are compelling, but the storyline surrounding their father-son dynamic is not. That they can still create sparks in a vacuum is impressive, but writer-director Anderson has done little to give us an epic overview that puts this relationship in the context of a bigger picture.

Beyond the performances and the gorgeous 70mm cinematography The Master feels like something major is missing in the storytelling.

As a big fan of Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Rian Johnson (I loved their collaboration, Brick), I was prepared to love Looper — but I was instead disappointed by it. The sci-fi flick also stars Bruce Willis and Emily Blunt, and mashes together elements from the likable Jean-Claude Van Damme B-movie, Timecop, and the Brian DePalma telepathic horror flick The Fury. Looper has a jazzy, exciting premise. In a world where the middle class is gone, being a Looper, a hired killer who just has to kill tied-up, helpless victims zapped back in time from an even more terrible future, is a sweet gig.

You make lots of money and can enjoy drug-fueled carnal delights while avoiding the life of those barely surviving in the streets. Still it comes at a price — you know that eventually you have to “close the loop” and kill your future self. When that moment arrives and Joe (Gordon-Levitt) is expected to kill his older self (Bruce Willis), he hesitates and is on the lam for breaking the rules. The Fury element arrives when the movie sags terribly in the middle as Young Joe is hiding out in a farm with a woman (Blunt) and her son, who might grow up to be the monster dictator who controls the future world “Old Joe” left. While GordonLevitt and Willis have a blast with the space-time issues and some funny dialogue, the movie loses steam after a solid start and just keeps falling apart as it races to a less than satisfying conclusion. n

Faces of Our Homeless Texas artist giving voice to the Atlantic City homeless through art

One of Camm’s portraits While studying art at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Camm found himself drawn to realism in an abstract world. He was at odds with his vocation.

Gone were the days of the masters who inspired him the most. Lost in the world of modern art, Camm began to sketch the people that he saw sleeping on the streets in his free time between classes.

He wondered what had led them to this life and, due to his own misfortunes, he empathized greatly with those he painted.

For Camm it was easy to see the beauty of humanity in the direst of circumstances, and he soon began to notice that the beauty of his art could inspire compassion in a society that would rather look the other way. “I was always influenced

by Caravaggio, Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Goya and Millet,” Camm says, “because of their realism and their dedicated relationship with their materials. They also all painted the poor. Now, I can be part of that story too.” This was the start of Camm’s life mission and the upcoming exhibit at the Noyes Museum of Art of Stockton College, “Finding Home: Seth Camm – Giving Voice to the Homeless Through Art.” “Finding Home” examines the issue of homelessness through paintings and stories. The exhibition is an attempt to build bridges between neighbors and erase misconceptions.

Camm is from San Antonio, Texas, but he has spent the past 12 years traveling around the country, living and working with the homeless in order to tell their stories. Throughout this 12-year expanse, Camm spent a great deal of time at the Atlantic City Rescue Mission and for the past two months he has been exclusively living with, eating with, bonding with, and painting the residents of the Atlantic City Rescue Mission.

They shared their stories while he painted their portraits.

Camm’s ability to capture the essence of an individual on canvas communicates directly with the viewer. Through these images, it is Camm’s hope to break the prejudice and soften the hostility that often comes from a lack of understanding. “Finding Home” brings the faces and voices of the homeless to light calling for compassion for all humanity.

Camm has drawn and painted more than 800 portraits of the homeless and has collected more than 300 narratives.

The “Finding Home” project is multi-

faceted. To accompany the exhibition, local filmmaker Frank Weiss is working to capture the stories of the homeless and their experiences in a powerful documentary. Weiss films as Camm paints. The goal of this film is to communicate the individual stories in order to reveal that homelessness can happen to anyone at anytime.

Weiss began his career as a photographer in 2005 in Kandahar, Afghanistan, while serving in the United States Air Force. Weiss’s work is built upon the foundation of respect for all human life.

Through photography and filmmaking, Weiss explores the human experience in relation to cultural confines.

Selections of the documentary will be shown with the exhibition and the final film will be screened at the Noyes Museum, at Stockton College, and at the Atlantic City Rescue Mission later this year.

OR MOST OF US, OCTOBER MEANS that fall is here. The trees are ablaze in vibrant autumn hues, Halloween decorations are out, and pumpkinspice coffee is back. However, for the homeless population of Atlantic City, October means that the harsh and often dangerous winter winds are looming.

Each year over 3.5 million Americans experience homelessness. In 2011, in Atlantic County alone, close to 3,000 homeless individuals were served at the Atlantic City Rescue Mission. Of this group, over 90 percent were homeless because of other life circumstances, such as illness, home foreclosures, and loss of jobs. In general, 50 percent of the homeless are mentally ill and 20-25 percent of the homeless are veterans. Each homeless person has a unique story, a unique set of circumstances that brought him or her to the shelter. However, once there, the greatest challenge the homeless face is a lack of compassion.

Mother Theresa said: “We think sometimes that poverty is only being hungry, naked and homeless. The poverty of being unwanted, uncared for, and unloved is the greatest poverty. We must start in our own homes to remedy this kind of poverty.”

This is a message that the American artist, Seth Camm, has taken to heart, but for him he’s found his start at the easel.

This wasn’t an easy journey for Camm; it took him a nervous breakdown to achieve the compassion he now has for the plight of the homeless.

“Because of my breakdown,” Camm says, “I really identified with the idea of losing everything. I wanted to see if their experiences were like mine.”
