Atlantic City Music Festival Oct. 3-5 By Kaitlin Montague

for the third consecutive year (Oct. 3-5) the BayAtlantic Symphony’s Atlantic City Music Festival returns to Dante Hall Theatre of Richard Stockton College with three concerts at the former church. On Oct. 3, the Choral Arts of Southern New Jersey and the Bay-Atlantic Symphony String Quartet will perform new and conventional spiritual music featuring the compositions of Eric Whitacre. Other pieces will include soprano Lauren Athey-Janka, the “new age” sounds of Ola Gjeilo and his setting of “Dark Night of the Soul,” a new arrangement of a Shaker hymn by William Hawley, as well as pieces by southern New Jersey composers. On Oct. 4, the Jazz Concert will feature George Rabbai and his All Star Quintet performing compositions made famous by jazz trumpeters Louis Armstrong, Clifford Brown, Clark Terry and Miles Davis, as well as tunes by Broadway’s greatest songwriters. Performing with Rabbai will be Dick Oatts, Tom Lawton, Dan Monaghan and Matt Parish. On Oct. 5, the festival will conclude with a children’s concert, Peter and the Wolf, Sergei Prokofiev’s musical symphony. It will be performed by the Bay-Atlantic Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Maestro Jed Gaylin. The concert will be narrated in both English and Spanish by noted actor Carlos Espinal. Concerts will begin at 8pm all three nights. For ticket information call 347-2162 or visit stockton.edu/dante.

Volume 2: Music From the HBO Original Series’ (ABKCO)) Following the 2012 Grammy win for Vol. 1 of the Boardwalk Empire: Music from the HBO Original Series album (Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media), the second volume again features Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks backing an eclectic group of musicians (Elvis Costello, Neko Case, Liza Minnelli, Rufus Wainwright, Patti Smith), along with actor-singers, both of whom appear on the show (currently in its fourth season) Stephen DeRosa (Eddie Cantor) and Kathy Brier (Sophie Tucker). Leon Redbone returns for the ride back to the 1920s, while songs heard on the show before the current season, such as Pokey LaFarge’s take on “Lovesick Blues”; David Johansen’s “Strut Miss Lizzy” and St. Vincent’s “Make Believe” are also included in the 20-song set. One of the many highlights is Case’s take on the standard “Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and Out,” which could certainly apply to most of the characters on the show at one point. — Jeff Schwachter

hen Charlie Manuel lost his favorite spot to watch the Phillies, in the dugout as the manager, he had to figure out what his next career move would be. Well, it didn’t take long for his brain trust to come up with a sweet gig, talking baseball with fans. The recently fired Philadelphia Phillies manager will make a special appearance at Tropicana’s Showroom on Friday, Oct. 11 at 7pm. The winningest manager in Phillies team history will share memories and experiences from his coaching days. Audience members will enjoy the chance to get their questions answered by Manuel himself. Tickets are just $15 each and are available through Ticketmaster at www. ticketmaster.com, via phone at 1-800-736-1420, or at the Tropicana Box Office. Ask about special discounts for organizations and groups of 20 or more. To many area fans, Manuel will be remembered as a Philadelphia legend. After his playing career — including a stint in Japan where he earned the nickname “The Red Devil” thanks to his big home runs and his red hair — he became an MLB coach and manager. When he took the helm of the Phillies in 2005, he wasn’t a popular choice, but after he led his team to the 2008 World Series and a return trip in 2009, Manuel became a fan favorite. With the World Series win and the five straight division titles, Manuel secured his status as a winner in the Philadelphia sports world.

ere in the Garden State, fall harvests give way to a bounty of exceptional seasonal beers and hearty foods celebrated everywhere by Oktoberfests — scaled down versions of the world’s largest beer festival held annually in Munich, Germany since 1810, and drawing about six million people over 16 days. Locally the Tropicana does an excellent weeklong, property-wide series of Oktoberfest events and discount specials on “beer, brats and tasty temptations” at more than a dozen sites from Sunday, Oct. 6, through Saturday, Oct. 12, during regular business hours at all locations. “In Munich, Oktoberfest is a festival to celebrate beer,” says Tropicana general manager Steve Callender. “At Tropicana, we’ll raise a stein and lower prices in honor of the traditional celebration.” The new Broadway Burger Bar offers a large variety of craft beers this fall, including Blue Moon Harvest Pumpkin Ale, Brooklyn Oktoberfest, and Himmel der Bayern HackerPschorr. On Thursday, Oct. 10, guests can learn about each brew at a special Beer Night where, for $35 per person, guests will get four 16-ounce beers and a tasting glass flight of beers, sliders, fries, onion straws and Bavarian pretzels. The price also includes a complimentary gift glass and other prizes. The Bar at Fin has German or seasonal beer specially priced at $6 each all month long, including Warsteiner, Hofbrau Munchen Oktoberfest, Beck’s, Samuel Adams Oktoberfest and Shock Top Pumpkin Wheat Ale. Other October specials include bratwurst and sourkraut for $7, a soft pretzel with beer cheese for $4, and tasting paddles of Samuel Adams Boston Lager, Oktoberfest and Angry Orchard for $9 each. At Firewaters, which always boasts one of the best selections of craft beers in the city, guests can enjoy specials on Samuel Adams Oktoberfest, Saranac Pumpkin Ale, Blue Point Mother Pumpkin, Great Lakes Oktoberfest, Shipyard Pumpkin Fest, Stout Oktoberfest, Samuel Adams Pumpkin Ale and Blue Point Oktoberfest. At the pub where everyone is Irish, everyone can be German Oct. 6-10 when RíRá Irish Pub offers Oktoberfest specials like bangers, bacon and sauerkraut served as a classic German dish (with an Irish twist, $13.95). Other specialty fare being cooked up at RiRa will be beer-braised chicken with stewed potatoes, carrots and onions ($15.95) or a 12-ounce honey-beer ribeye steak ($17.95). Rumba and Tango’s lounges will have $7 specialty beers for the entire month of October, including Warsteiner, Hofbrau
Munchen Oktoberfest, Beck’s Dark, Samuel Adams Oktoberfest and Shock Top Pumpkin Wheat Ale. Chickie’s & Pete’s Crab House & Sports Bar offers a variety of craft beers by Goose Island, Blue Point, Flying Fish and Magic Hat. A Dam Good Deli will have bratwurst cooked in beer with sauerkraut for $5; A Dam Good Sports Bar will offer Weisswurst (a German white sausage) for $4; and Carmine’s is offering pints of Samuel Adams Oktoberfest for $6.50. For other specials at the Trop, visit tropicana. net/oktoberfest. Oktoberfest specials are also being offered on Tropicana room rates from Oct. 6-10. For $69, guests can get a double-occupancy room for one night along with a $10 free slot play and $20 food-andbeverage credit at any Tropicana-owned outlet. Call 1-800-345-8767 and use booking code TOCTF. *** Elsewhere, one of the areas longest-running Oktoberfests returns to Gregory’s restaurant in Somers Point (900 Shore Road). Now in its 34th year, Gregory’s Oktoberfest is again getting ready to celebrate the “Best of the Wurst” every Friday night, starting Oct. 4, through October and November with seven specialty lunch and dinner items. Gregorys’ will also bring back its classic Beer Garden with authentic Oktoberfest music playing all night. *** Later this month, another longstanding Oktoberfest tradition returns to the Trump Taj Mahal. The Taj’s 20th annual Oktoberfest is Oct. 26-27 in the Grand Ballroom, running from noon-8pm Saturday and noon-6pm Sunday. hen the Atlantic City Rodeo sashays into Boardwalk Hall this weekend for the third consecutive year, it’ll bring with it something besides a change in season for the event. It’s bringing a little more incentive for the nation’s top rodeo cowboys to pony up the entry fee required to compete in East Coast’s largest rodeo. The move from early spring, when the first two rodeos were held, to early fall, means this show comes at the very beginning of rodeo season and not in the middle of the season. And that makes a big difference, according to John Barnes, whose family-owned Barnes PRCA Rodeo Company has been producing rodeos for more than 60 years and is returning to Atlantic City for its third gallop around the big room on the Boardwalk. “What that means is that there will be contestants coming to [A.C.] to earn points and qualify for some larger indoor rodeos throughout the wintertime,” Barnes says during a phone call from rodeo headquarters at his family farm in Peterson, Iowa. “It’s a different twist, but it’s going to be a great situation.” The eastern part of the country — particularly along the Atlantic coast — isn’t exactly prime rodeo territory. But having attracted thousands of fans to each of its first two shows in Atlantic City, the Boardwalk rodeo has quickly become the biggest competition of its kind in the east. The cowboys, who will compete for up to $100,000 in prize money, like the idea of coming to Atlantic City for everything the city has to offer when they’re not riding bucking broncos or trying to rope steers or riding bareback horses, Barnes says. “What’s really neat is that contestants will put a pin on certain rodeos they want to go to, and Atlantic City is one of those rodeos right now because it’s the largest rodeo on the East Coast,” Barnes says. “People will call me and ask me how close it is to the ocean. And I tell them you don’t understand. It is the ocean. I tell them there are pumps under Boardwalk Hall pumping the water out just so we can have the rodeo.” Okay, that may be something of an exaggeration, although because it’s so close to the ocean there really are pumps in the sub-subbasement of the 84-year-old building to keep the ocean where it belongs. Barnes brought the rodeo, which is sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, to Atlantic City after first checking out Boardwalk Hall four years ago at the behest of Dennis Gomes, the late co-owner and CEO of Resorts Casino Hotel. A committee, headed by local businesswoman Janet Markowitz — who at the time didn’t know

a 10-gallon hat from a 10-gallon bucket — was formed and the Atlantic City Boardwalk Rodeo was born. “When we walked into Boardwalk Hall and saw the stage ... and thought about all that wonderful history that’s been through that facility, your mouth just drops open,” Barnes recalls. “And to think that we could be one of the elite rodeos of the PRCA to that facility was a challenge that we wanted an opportunity to meet, and it’s one that’s been met.” Boardwalk Hall, which can seat about 10,000 people for a rodeo, is an ideal room to present a traditional rodeo, which includes bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronco riding, tie-down roping, barrel racing and bull riding. “[T]he ideal size is about the size of an ice hockey rink, which makes Boardwalk Hall the perfect size for a rodeo,” he adds. Creating a rodeo circuit requires a lot of advance preparation, Barnes adds. Because he’s hauling his livestock around the country in trucks, he doesn’t travel for more than 10 hours a day to minimize stress on the animals. He also needs to locate stockyards with adequate water and food for his critters when they stop for the night. “There’s not a whole lot of Holiday Inn Expresses and other places that want you to bring your stock into the [hotel] room with you,” he says with a laugh. The Atlantic City rodeo, like others around the country, has drawn more than just fans of the sport, though. It’s also attracted animal rights activists to protest what they perceive as cruelty to the horses and steers and other animals that make up a rodeo. Barnes points out that everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion. But he also points out the safeguards in place to protect the livestock. Rodeo rules call for a licensed veterinarian to be at every rodeo show in case an animal is injured. When it comes to reaching a bigger audience through television — and some rodeos are televised — Barnes is on the fence when it comes to broadcasting the event. “TV is expensive, you’ve got to sell a lot of commercials to cover the costs,” he says. “Plus, watching a live rodeo is more exciting than seeing it on TV. Football is a game where sometimes you see it better on TV than you do in person. Rodeo is just the opposite. You see it better in person than you do on TV, because when the whistle blows and the competition is done, the animals are still in the arena. And the animals still have their own personalities, and you don’t get to watch that on TV. And that’s the thing that makes live rodeo so much fun to be a part of.” n

nce again, greetings and salutations. And how about it? Second full week of fall and the memories linger on of the good times we had this summer at the allnew Memories in Margate. Keep an ear and an eye open, because we’ll have some special events coming your way at Memories. For further info, all you have to do is listen to our nightly show on the air from 7-9pm on KOOL 98.3 or online at kool983.com. Or visit Geator.net for my schedule. And would you believe the Columbus Day Parade is upon us? My buddy Bobby Rydell will be the Grand Marshall this year, riding along with the Geator in the Family Geatormobile. You can see all the action Sunday, Oct. 13, on ABC Channel 6 starting at noon, or join us in person on South Broad Street in Philly. And how about it? The Geator’s life story, You Only Rock Once, is out in paperback, and it’s selling like crazy all over again. The success of this is reminiscent of how it all began with me on radio back in 1960. It was word of mouth back then, and that’s what’s happening with the book. It is available at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, local bookstores, and at all my personal appearances. And yes, we’ll have copies available for signing on the Malt Shop Memories cruise, which goes out Nov. 3. Well, that’s about it for now. Thanks once again to my friends and fans who made this past summer absolutely great, and we’ll keep the good times going all through this fall and winter. See you soon — now, let’s ask the Geator. Was wondering if an [audio] version of your book with you telling the stories has been considered. Something I would buy just
to hear it. I still listen to Band of Brothers in audio. Thanks for any info. — Nick Martin (long-time Geator fan from the good old WFIL/WIBG days) Yes, it has been considered. The problem is that currently, with all of my appearances and radio shows, my time is very limited. There is talk about getting an actor who would be talking in the place of the Geator. We’ll keep you informed as it progresses. Whatever happened to Herb Alpert? I don’t hear of him anymore. — Melanie, Toms River Herb is still active as a performer and has released several albums with his wife, Lani Hall, whom he met when she was performing with Brasil ’66. Herb does a lot of charity work and has also made a name for himself in the art world as a very accomplished abstract painter. He still holds the record as the only solo artist to have both a No. 1 vocal hit (“This Guy’s In Love With You”) and a No. 1 instrumental hit (“Rise”). I am trying to find an old song called “You never miss a good thing until it’s gone.” The old school song does not come up in searches. It starts off with “You said goodbye ...” Can you help me? — Rev. Dr. Gloria Gay, Galloway Sounds like you’re talking about “You Never Miss a Good Thing” by the Miracles, written by Smokey in 1962. It was the B side of “I’ll Try Something New.” Most of Smokey’s B sides were just as good as his hits. n

Margaritaville Resorts, Atlantic City
The flagship restaurant in Jimmy Buffett’s Resorts conglomerate, at Margaritaville you’ll smell those shrimp as they’re beginning to boil.

lorida-based troubadour Jimmy Buffett has built an empire of resorts, restaurants and retail, all dedicated to the finer points of his laid-back Caribbean lifestyle. A quartet of those enterprises — the flagship Margaritaville restaurant, the beach-fronting Landshark Bar and Grill, the 5 O’Clock Somewhere bar and the Margaritaville Casino — arrived at Resorts Atlantic City earlier this year. If our dinner on a busy recent Friday night at Margaritaville is any indication, Jimmy’s place has quickly become one of our town’s favorite casual joints to drink, dine and carouse. In fact, its sense of infectious joviality is practically an antidote to boredom and malaise. Bright hues of oceanic blue and green greet customers, immediately crafting an atmosphere conducive to relaxation. Staffers all seem routinely well trained, often an issue with nascent enterprises of this scale. But it was the food, a surprising mix of classic tavern grub filtered through a sort of tropical prism, which most elated us. Like our pair of starters, Key West classic conch fritters and a house signature, lava lava shrimp. The fritters were six large, nicely seasoned balls of steamy hot dough, packed by plenty of tasty mollusk. Conch, for those unfamiliar, are large sea snails with plentiful, although difficult to extract, white meat. Fritters of this sort are a staple southern food, and these deep-fried bundles didn’t disappoint. As for the shrimp, close to 20 had been doused in a creamy, piquant sauce, not unlike a Caribbean take on Buffalo-style shrimp. They were clean tasting, fresh and packed a nice dose of incipient capsicum heat.
If our dinner on a busy recent Friday night at Margaritaville is any indication, Jimmy’s place has quickly become one of our town’s favorite casual joints to drink, dine and carouse. We don’t typically mention menu items not sampled, but in the case of the volcano nachos appetizer, an exception must be made. This staggering combination of chili, cheese, guacamole, sour cream, jalapenos, tomatoes and scallions is the single largest plate of nachos we’ve ever witnessed. Literally close to a foot in height, packed with multiple layers of chips it arrives looking more like a national monument than something you’re expecting to consume — which we plan to return and attempt soon. A middle course, lobster, lump crab and shrimp salad atop mixed greens, brought
plenty of each, along with sliced cucumbers, quartered tomato and a couple rings of red onion. We enjoyed the seafood immensely and, although the use of sour cream in the zesty dressing was creative, we still would have preferred just a little less overall. At the urging of our excellent server, we opted for a main we wouldn’t typically order, teriyaki sirloin. The cut of steak, probably close to eight ounces, was tender and cooked as ordered to a ruddy mid-rare. Accompanying was well-made mash and a pineapple-mango salsa atop the beef, and wonderful, perfectly cooked green beans.

You might not think we’d be so enamored of a daily vegetable offering, but these proved so delicious and thoughtfully prepared — still retaining crispness — they warrant mention. When a kitchen gets small details of this sort so very right, someone is really paying attention. My dining partner went with another signature, Jimmy’s Jammin’ Jambalaya. This entrée — registered by trademark for its catchy, alliterative moniker — delivered a lovely bowl of rice, shrimp, chicken and andouille sausage, accented by a proper ‘Nawlins trinity of diced onion, celery and pepper. And the broth was not some dumbeddown chain restaurant version, either. It packed plenty of spice, just the right amount of heat, and blended harmoniously with rice — true comfort food, southern style. In the pleasant moments between courses, there is much to observe at Margaritaville. Especially a pair of supremely brave female staffers wading through the crowd on stilts, chatting up customers and making them balloon hats. You heard right. Toting mini tanks of helium they fashion artistic, complex balloon shapes, all while perilously perched ten feet or more high. In a town where reputations were often built on carnival acts — plus a little vice thrown in for good measure — this was both an incredible high-wire performance, and a pleasant homage to the past. Desserts appropriately featured authentic Key lime pie — rich yellow custard with a tart flavor profile and graham cracker crust, plus a house specialty, the chocolate hurricane. This heaping bowl, composed of an enormous brownie covered with vanilla ice cream, hot fudge, whipped cream and crushed macadamia nuts, could easily have fed two. ■ see more online @

roping (the latter the son of world champion tie-down roper Roy Cooper); Howdy Cloud and Shane Proctor in bull riding; and Casey Colletti, Jacobs Crawley, Steven Dent, Cole Elshere, Ryan Gray and Bobby Mote in bareback and saddle bronco riding. There are also 28 competitors from New Jersey, including several women in barrel racing. In addition to the various competitions, there will also be entertaining setups on the Boardwalk Hall concourse both days, including the PRCA Hall of Education — a handson experience allowing interaction with rodeo personnel to learn various rodeo techniques. The display will also feature information on the history of the sport and extensive information on the livestock involved. The PRCA will also be hosting a Championship Rodeo Camp for children ages 8 and over on Saturday, Oct. 5, from 9am-3pm. Visit prorodeo.com/youthrodeo for more on this. Markowitz says that in the past two years the rodeo has been in town, the participants seem to enjoy themselves as much as the show attendees. “They absolutely loved Atlantic City,” she says.” You know what’s interesting? I’d say 99 percent of them had never been here before, but after the rodeo was over, and I’d see different people who owned businesses, restaurants, hotels and what not, everybody would come up to me and say ‘they were the nicest people ever!’ They’d tell me about hearing ‘howdy ma’am’ and ‘thank you, ma’am,’ tipping hats as they walked by — that’s just what they’re like. They’re so nice.” ■

Las Vegas, the A.C. Rodeo was pushed ahead to October and condensed into two days. “The [rodeo] year ends Sept. 30, and the only reason I know that is because it happens to be my birthday,” says Markowitz, who turned 61 Monday. “So the new year starts the first [Oct. 1], and the good thing about our rodeo is that the cowboys who finished high in the rankings who still want to compete in Las Vegas in November and December, this gives them an opportunity to, as they say, scoop some early money, then relax a little bit and prepare for Las Vegas. So we’re getting many of the best rodeo cowboys in the country.” The A.C. Boardwalk Rodeo is presented by the Barnes PRCA Rodeo Company of Peterson, Iowa, which has roots back to 1950. “Barnes is the best in the PRCA [Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association],” says Markowitz. “John Barnes [whose father Bob established the company] is actually the livestock superintendent in Las Vegas for the world championships, so I figure you can’t get any better than that. “Last year, for three shows, we had 280some contestants,” adds Markowitz. “This year, for just two shows, we have 220, so on Saturday we have to do slack with 65 contestants [a ‘slack’ round in rodeo is a preliminary round to allow all contestants an equal number of rounds] because we have so many. And many of them are top performers in the world standings.” Top competitors include bareback rider Kyle Bowers, who won six rodeos in 2013; Hunter Herrin and Clint Cooper in tie-down

decade ago, in early October 2003, Boardwalk Hall played host to a Professional Bull Riders event that saw several of the world’s top cowboys vie for prize money by attempting to stay atop massive bucking beasts for at least eight seconds. It was a unique and exciting two-day contest, but likely proved too one-dimensional as an annual family attraction and did not return to the Hall. In spring 2011, cowboys again descended on Atlantic City, this time as part of the East Coast’s largest rodeo that included multiple components like bareback and saddle bronco riding, tie-down and team roping events, steer wrestling, barrel racing and bull riding. “The dynamics and demographics of the PBR are completely different from a rodeo,” says Atlantic City Boardwalk Rodeo chairwoman Janet Markowitz. “A rodeo really does attract everybody in the family, and the PBR just did not have that same kind of drawing power. The rodeo is much more family friendly, and this year our main act is an amazing trained-horse act by Jerry Wayne Olson (see sidebar) that everybody is going to love.” The brainchild of the late Resorts CEO Dennis Gomes, the A.C. Boardwalk Rodeo was a huge initial hit that returned to put nearly 17,000 spectators in Boardwalk Hall over three days last spring. This year, with contestants vying for nearly six figures in prize money and having more of an incentive as a qualifier for even more lucrative indoor events (see this week’s Curtain Call column) like the upcoming National Finals Rodeo in
mong the most respected names on the PRCA circuit, and not just as a former National Finals Rodeo steer wrestler and one of the nation’s best trick ropers (a skill he started honing at age 6), is Jerry Wayne Olson of Sturgis, South Dakota. With wife Judy as his right-hand woman at all events, Olson has been in the limelight in rodeos all over the nation, earning the 1988 PRCA Specialty Act of the Year award and having been a top-five finalist for that prestigious honor 10 other times. On Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 5-6, the Olsons will be making their A.C. debut along with the stars of their specialty act, a golden palomino quarter horse named Justin Boots (or JB, as Olson calls him) and a miniature horse named Lickity Split. Using voice commands only, Jerry Olson puts JB through a series of maneuvers such as figure eights, changing direction forward and backward, switching gaits from a walk to a trot to a gallop, bowing to the audience and, most impressively, jumping onto the back of a moving pickup truck (driven by Judy Olson). “That’s very unnatural to a horse,” Jerry Olson tells AC Weekly by phone. “Anything that’s moving they don’t want to step onto. I got JB when when he was two years old, when he was four years old I started working him, and at age six is when I started showing him. Now he’s 20 years old.” Lickity Split — a favorite among families and children — will lay down and pull a blanket onto himself, give Olson a kiss on command, fetch his hat, stand on a small pedestal and wave to the crowd, walk on his hind legs and close out his act with an “End of the Trail” bow of his head. “This is our first time in Atlantic City and we’re really looking forward to coming,” says Olson, a third-generation rodeo performer who, at age 18 months, rode on his father’s shoulders while he stood on the back of two moving horses [called Roman Riding in rodeo lingo]. “Basically I was born and raised in rodeo shows. I started competing in rodeos at age 12 and started Roman Riding in my 20s. I just love all aspects of the rodeo. We’ve been in arenas all over the country and are really looking forward to performing in Atlantic City.” — RS

Comedian Bill Engvall brings his down-home laughs to the Taj Mahal By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com

ill Engvall knew when he chatted with Atlantic City Weekly last week that he might be gone, the next celebrity boot-scooted off Dancing with the Stars. As he confessed when I was asking him how he was he feeling, “I’m worn out and tired. I didn’t realize how hard this was going to be. Being on the show consumes your life literally. You’re rehearsing four to five hours a day, five days a week, and you don’t even get the weekend off because that’s for camera blocking, then the show is Monday. But I’m having a blast.” Well the fun will continue since he was not eliminated Monday. Because of this turn of events, his professional dance partner, Emma Slater, will be coming with him on the road to rehearse. “My dancing experience [prior to the show] was being in a honky-tonk with a beer in one hand and a girl in the other,” explains Engvall. “And doing the white guy prom dance.” Here is what else Engvall told AC Weekly about DWTS, why he knew Jennifer Lawrence would be a star and when he realized he could make people laugh for a living. What has been most unexpected about the Dancing With the Stars experience? Just how cool the other celebrities are. I met Nicole for the first time, [Snooki from Jersey Shore] and I was ready to not like her just because I wasn’t a fan of the show, but she is the sweetest, nicest person on the planet. She shows me pictures of her baby and we talk. I though it would be a lot more cutthroat than it is, People are really supportive of each other. They want to win but they are nice. And I got to meet Valerie Harper. You go, ‘wow. She was always Rhoda and now I’ve gotten to know her as Valerie and she’s sweet and nice.’ When you did your own comedy show on TBS, The Bill Engvall Show (2007-2009), you worked with a teenage newcomer. Did you know how talented Jennifer Lawrence was even back then? Yes. I knew within two weeks. I hate to sound Hollywood, but she had ‘it,’ and I can’t tell you what ‘it’ is, but you just knew. There was something about her that you said, ‘This is just the beginning for her.’ When did you know you could make people laugh well enough to make a career out of it? It was when I won the award [American Comedy Award for Best Male Stand-up Comedian, in 1992]. I realized I could be among some of the best, that this was what
Bill Engvall
‘Being on the show consumes your life literally.’ I should be doing for as living. How did you make the transition to comedy? I was a DJ at a nightclub in Dallas and I went with a buddy to amateur night and after a few rounds of liquid encouragement, I went on stage and did five minutes and people laughed. I thought, ‘Oh my God, this is fun.’ I was hooked right then. Have you worked up about a routine about being on DWTS for your show? The way my stuff goes, I just start talking about what’s going on in my life, like being on Dancing With the Stars and something will pop into my head. I’m so bad about physically writing stuff down. I’ve probably lost two albums of material because of that. I’m not a comic with eight notebooks full of notes. I’ve got nothing. Tell me something about yourself that most people don’t know? People don’t know that secretly, I’m a huge rocker. In the ‘80s when the hair bands were big, I was so into that. Something else they don’t know, if I had the ability I would love to sing songs like Michael Bublé, like a Vegas lounge singer. I’d love to put on a tux and have an orchestra behind me. ■ (Go to acweekly.com for a longer version of this interview)

Kathy Griffin Returns to Borgata The provacative comic reveals: ‘None of this would work if I wasn’t making people laugh.’ By Ed Condran • feedback@acweekly.com “Absolutely,” she admits. “Once in a blue moon something like this can happen and I took full advantage of it.” Donahue is one of many peeved at Griffin. In fact, she can’t even begin to count her detractors. “There are so many people who have problems with me, and that’s just fine,” Grffin says. “Bill O’Reilly calls me a pinhead, which I’ll accept as a badge of honor. [Actress] Patricia Heaton finds me upsetting. One time she sent me a long e-mail berating my liberal ideals. I had no idea that she was such a nut until I received that e-mail.” And then there are the physical confrontations. The late Whitney Houston waved a finger in Griffin’s face after she was fodder for material. “Whitney was the most upset anyone has been at me,” Griffin says. “She came after me when I was backstage at the Billboard Awards show, which I hosted years ago. She was so mad, but people have a right to be mad at me. The Kardashians have a right to be mad at me. But if I see something that I can have fun with I’m not going to censor myself. My celebrity friends know that. But it works both ways. If I’m at dinner with Joan Rivers and I say or do something and she wants to

always nominated so I’m there. This year I sat behind Frank Ocean, who was in a physical altercation with Chris Brown, who was five rows away with his arm wrapped around Rihanna. I’ll take you there with me. I’m on the inside, but I kicked down the door. The problem is that someone is always trying to put the doors back on its hinges.” Griffin is provocative, outrageous and funny. “None of this would work if I wasn’t making people laugh,” Griffin says. “I believe I’m like a humorous journalist. I’m the one letting you know what our favorite actress Lindsay Lohan is doing right up to the moment before I go onstage.” Part of what makes Griffin so electric as a performer is that she truly doesn’t care what anyone thinks. She enjoys ruffling the feathers of the masses. Who can forget her off-the-charts Emmy Award acceptance speech seven-years ago? The lapsed Catholic infuriated Catholic League President Bill Donahue, who dubbed her speech, “vulgar, in your-face brand of hate speech.” Was Griffin, who uttered anti-Christian sentiments, hoping to set off a firestorm?

athy Griffin gushes about how great a time the unpredictable comic recently had at a Don Rickles roast, while hanging with Joan Rivers. The vision of Griffin holding court with arguably the greatest insult comic and the bawdy Rivers makes complete sense. “I really think that we’re three of a kind,” Griffin says. “We don’t care about anything but making people laugh.” The quick-witted Griffin stands out in the never-ending politically correct era since she always speaks from the hip, sparing nobody’s feelings.“When you come see me [Saturday at the Borgata], leave the children and the Bible at home,” Griffin tells Atlantic City Weekly while calling from Los Angeles. Griffin, 52, is a generation or so removed from Rickles and Rivers, but she has more in common with the comic legends than her safe and sanitized peers. “I’m telling tales out of school,” Griffin says. “I’m tearing back the curtain like a messed up Wizard of Oz. I’ll tell you the fun Hollywood stories since I go to all of the Hollywood award shows. It kills the people from the Grammys that I’m at their shows, but my albums are
use it during one of her shows, go ahead. We should be all about being open and honest.” A stand-up special is what Griffin will focus on after her tour ends. “It’ll be my 17th special and that breaks the record for comedy specials held by the late great George Carlin,” Griffin says. “He’s another guy who never held back. I’m continuing that tradition.” Even though Griffin is a major star, she insists that she is on Hollywood’s periphery. “There’s no doubt about that,” Griffin says. “Let’s be real. I’m still an outsider in Hollywood. I’m not invited to the Hollywood game nights. But does anything sound worse than game night at Hilary Swank’s? When I hear about how precious these game nights are for celebrities, I just want to puke. Can anything be more horrible? How about a game night at Ryan Seacrest’s house? Everyone will have to laugh at his lame jokes. No thank you. I don’t have a game night. I have a gay night, in which we gossip. I don’t care about their game nights.” The quick, topical and cerebral Griffin would be perfect to host a nighttime talk show, which she wouldn’t mind trying, but she doubts there will be such an opportunity for her or any other women anytime soon. “Remember when Joan Rivers got her talk show on Fox 20 years ago?,” Griffin asks. “I really thought things would change. I thought women and men were going to split [late-night] TV positions down the middle. That didn’t happen.” But Griffin was part of the female-centric sitcom run of the ’90s. “I was lucky to be in that mix since I was on Suddenly Susan,” Griffin says. “It was a great time for women with Roseanne, Caroline in the City and Grace Under Fire. Who knew that the early to mid-’90s would be the golden age for women in comedy? Women can be funny. There’s no doubt about that. There just aren’t that many television opportunities out there for us. There was The Sarah Silverman Program and that was great, but that’s no more. There’s not much television for women but there’s always the stage and that’s where I am and I love it.” ■

acting. You’re in this nine by fourteen foot box in a sea of darkness. The camera is on an arm that is rushing towards you. You’re attached to 12 wires and being manipulated by puppeteers or your own body weight to simulate flying around in space. It was the most bizarre series of contraptions. I missed being in the sun. I missed my son. I missed being with people. I was grateful that I could leave that environment at the end of the day and enjoy the sunshine and the rain. But I loved that I got to do it.” She also confessed that she had no interest in going into space and in fact she hates flying, “I appreciate not being in my comfort zone, because that means I am getting as far away as possible from playing myself which would be so boring for an audience. It forces you to dig very deep. This story scared me so much, especially when it was going to be shot in the Vomit Comet [a plane] that plummets from the sky to achieve weightlessness and I’m deathly afraid of flying. It’s one of my greatest fears.” The producer admitted that he didn’t tell Bullock they weren’t using the plane until the last few weeks being filming started. She also talked about her co-star, George Clooney. “George and I have known each other for over 20 years, since we got out of college, We’ve known each other since we didn’t have any work. George is the same exact person I knew then, in all respects. He’s taken his blessed life and done amazing things with it.” n

ravity truly illustrates the tagline from Alien: “In space no one can hear you scream.” Directed and cowritten by Alfonso Cuarón (Y Tu Mamá También, Children of Men), this film combines a breathtaking use of 3D photography, terrifying lost in space action sequences and an emotionally gripping performance by Sandra Bullock to create a singular, brilliant movie that will leave you breathless. Bullock stars as medical engineer Ryan Stone, who is working on a repair to her equipment during a spacewalk, assisted by veteran astronaut Matt Kowalski (George Clooney) outside the US Space Station Explorer. What follows is a spectacular accident in space that creates a catastrophic cascade of events that leave the two astronauts floating in space with what seems like no chance to survive. Cut off from communication, floating in the blackness and silence, a plan is conceived to make it to the International Space Station. Choices have to be made and Stone’s panic must be contained in order for the plan to work. Bullock has to convey her terror, and eventually her courage, from inside a space suit and does do quite effectively and in Oscar-worthy fashion. For her emotional connection to work, the visuals around her must also convey the sense of hopelessness that comes with being alone and in space. Gravity does so magnificently, with stellar use of the 3D technology and a screenplay that makes space itself a character in the story. Gravity is the best film of the year to date.
