Fannie Lou Hamer -Stockton Albert Einstein Symposium

Prior to the passing of the late great Gil Scott-Heron in 2011, the legendary singer-songwriter spoke to Atlantic City Weekly (first, in the fall of 2009) a few times with regard to his then-new studio album I’m New Here and his upcoming book (The Last Holiday, published posthumously earlier this year). During these conversations, this writer and the singersongwriter spoke about Fannie Lou Hamer, the American civil rights leader who fought to get blacks the right to vote during the 1960s. Scott-Heron even wrote a song for her — 1977’s moving “95 South (All of the Places We’ve Been)” In the middle In the middleof ofdifficulty difficultylies liesopportunity. opportunity. from his stellar Bridges album — and often dedicated it to her LICENSED, BONDED & INSURED Albert Einstein Einstein --Albert during his live shows. Resorts to Share Rewards Programs

With the recent announcement that the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority (MTGA) became a minority owner and principal operator of Resorts Atlantic City came the news that the company will be sharing rewards programs between Resorts and the two other properties it owns — Mohegan Sun in Connecticut and Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs in Pa. The three properties now offer a cross-marketing promotion that allows guests to use their rewards points at any or all of the three for things like shopping, dining, rooms and entertainment by presenting their rewards card. Rewards points will be used at a one-to-one ratio, meaning that one point will be equal to one dollar. “Our approach has always been focused on the guest experience,” said Mitchell Etess, MTGA’s chief executive officer, in a media release. “With the addition of Resorts, we are now able to expand and augment our unique offerings to include an iconic beachfront destination.” During a Sept. 27 luncheon of the Atlantic City Hotel & Lodging Association, Resorts new president/CEO Gary Van Hettinga alluded to the new cross-marketing program and also mentioned that sprucing up Resorts’ interior and exterior will soon be forthcoming, including remodeling the Boardwalk side of the façade in a Margaritaville theme carrying a $35 million investment, and scheduled to open in May 2013. — Ray Schweibert

Jakob Dylan has regrouped his band the Wallflowers just in time for the band’s 20th anniversary of recording. The new rockin’ album, Glad All Over, speaks to the main influences of the band, especially Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, the Clash and the Boss. The Clash’s Mick Jones appears on the jumpy and effective Sandinista!-era cut, “Reboot the Mission,” while the rest of the album tracks leave no room for filler. The band’s best album since its sophomore release, Bringing Down the Horse, Glad All Over could — and should — lead to as many singles and hits as that 1996 album did (with “One Headlight,” “Sixth Avenue Heartache,” “The Difference,” “Three Marlenas”). Jake and the boys — including original Hammond organ player Rami Jaffe back in the fold — have come a long way since their self-titled 1992 Virgin release and the songwriting on Glad proves that good songs run in the Dylan-family blood. —Jeff Schwachter

NIGHTLIFE

‘Southern’ Comfort in CMC Where to party down in towns a little further south on the Garden State Parkway this fall. By Ray Schweibert

M

ANY DIFFERENT PLACES HAVE plenty going on this fall in Cape May County, so if you didn’t make it down during a bustling summer season, now is still a prime time to do so. A new establishment in the heart of North Wildwood’s entertainment district is the North End American Grill (206 Olde New Jersey Ave.). It does a daily Happy hour with half-priced beer (about a dozen on tap), wine and well drinks, and a primo selection of $5 and $6 appetizers like pulled pork sliders or mussels in homemade marinara. It also features several specialty cocktails like the Fish Bowl (Stoli Blueberry, whipped cream, Blue Curacao and fresh pineapple), and each Sunday radio hosts Joe “Krausey” Krause and The Philly Godfather broadcast their Eagles pre-game show live from the North End on 98.7 The Coast for two hours prior to game time. There is also a special $5 NFL menu every Sunday. Down at Congress Hall in Cape May, lots of live music is going on most Thursday through Sunday nights at annexed Hall venues such as the Boiler Room, the Brown Room and the Rusty Nail. The acoustic duo Marnie & Nate play the Rusty Nail on Thursday, Oct. 4 (from 4:30-9pm), and on Friday singer/guitarist Carl Behrens is there 4:30-9pm. On Friday, singer/guitarist Wesley Ochs plays the Brown Room (8pm-midnight) and the horn-driven Dane Anthony Band is in the Boiler Room from 9pm-midnight. Visit congresshall.com to see a full fall music schedule. Also in Cape May, jazz keyboardist Paul Sottile plays the Ebbitt Room at the Virginia Hotel (25 Jackson St.) from 6:3010:30pm Friday, Oct. 5 The Windrift in Avalon (105 80th St.) still has an ambitious slate of live music going weekends throughout the fall in several attached venues, and a few special events. This Friday singer/pianist Darin MacDonald is at the Windrift (7pm) and the Big House Band is there starting 9:30pm. On Thursday, Oct. 4, the second annual Masquerade Ball is at the Windrift from 6-10pm, featuring a wine-tasting bar, silent auctions, butlered hors d’oeuvres and live music by an eightpiece orchestra. The event benefits Family Promise of Cape May County, a support group that provides shelter and food for homeless families. Don Tollefson, sports director for Channel 6 TV in Philly, is the special guest. Tickets are $75. The Deauville Inn in Strathmere (201 Like us:

Willard Rd.) is open from 3pm Monday and Thursday, and from 11am Friday through Sunday, during the fall. It still features a daily 4pm Happy hour, and this Friday, Oct. 5, Kenny Jeremiah & Bittersweet perform live at the Deauville’s main dining room starting 7pm. Kix McNutley’s in Sea Isle City (63rd and Landis Ave.) is still rocking through the fall with occasional live music, and will be the site of the after-party for the Italian Festival on Saturday, Oct. 6, following the 22nd annual Sea Isle City Columbus Day parade (starting 2pm). The festival will feature vendors, live music, cooking demonstrations, a cannolieating contest and free gifts. Two other Sea Isle City establishments have live music and special events on tap this fall. Singer/guitarist Chris Huff performs at O’Donnell’s Pour House (at 39th and 40th streets) on Saturday, Oct. 6, starting 9:30pm. Every Friday there’s a 5-7pm Happy hour there with free hors d’oeuvres and reduced drinks, and Friday is also pint night where you can get a 20-ounce pint of beer for $2.75 in a souvenir O’Donnell’s glass. Down the road at the Ocean Drive (40th and Landis), the Looseleaf Duo performs Saturday, Oct. 6, starting 9:30pm, then on Sunday, Oct. 7, the after-party for the 38th annual Philadelphia Firefighters Memorial 5K run and walk convenes at the OD. There’s a huge contingent of Irish pubs in the Wildwoods that stay active year-round. Among them are Keenan’s Irish Pub at 113 Olde New Jersey Ave., Westy’s Irish Pub at 101 E. Walnut Ave., Tucker’s Pub at 3301 Atlantic Ave., Anglesea Pub at 116 West First Ave., and Goodnight Irene’s Brew Pub (2708 Pacific Ave.), which boasts a craft-beer selection of over 90 varieties and hosts a Beer Pong Tournament every Sunday during the fall. Also in the Wildwoods, Juan Pablo’s Margarita Bar (3801 Pacific Ave.) is hosting a Craft Beer Fesitval and cornhole competition (tossing bags of corn into box holes) on Saturday, Oct. 13. Other Cape May County establishments that go full-speed into fall include Fred’s Tavern in Stone Harbor, La Costa Lounge and Deck Bar in Sea Isle City, Levari’s in Woodbine, and Obadiah’s and Yesterdays in Mamora. See the “After Dark” section of this edition (p. 14) for more ideas. n

New Tick on ‘Brick’ By David J. Spatz

D

ON’T BOTHER BREAKING OUT the disposable lighters hoping to lure Ian Anderson back to the stage after he performs the final notes of Jethro Tull’s 1972 concept album Thick as a Brick and its 2012 sequel, TAAB 2: Whatever Happened to Gerald Bostock? Anderson, who formed Jethro Tull in 1968 and was in the vanguard of the progressive rock movement, is currently touring with a brand new show that’s 40 years old. In spite of its popularity four decades ago, Thick as a Brick, a 45-minute unbroken piece of prog rock genius, has never been played like in its entirety until now. Anderson and his band are on tour in support of TAAB 2, which looks — in a musical style similar to the original — at the life of the character 40 years later. That’s pretty much why Anderson and his band won’t be performing any encores once they complete TAAB Saturday, Oct. 6, at Caesars Atlantic City. “I think, in this case, the whole evening should be used to bring them something they haven’t heard before,” Anderson told Pollstar magazine earlier this year. “And an encore would be a bit of a surplus. So, no, after two hours plus an intermission I think it’s time to head for the hills and get the hell out of there. I think the audience might be making a run for the doors when we finish the last note.” Although he only claims to have listened to the original album in its entirety about 20 times over the past 40 years, Anderson, 65, said the music quickly came back to him when he began assembling the sequel last year. “The words tend to be on the tip of my tongue; that’s not a problem, even on the three-quarters of the album we haven’t played in 40 years,” he said. “The performance of it, the notation, the execution, is not terribly difficult to play. It probably was at the time, but we were pushing our limits as musicians. It’s actually just memorizing the nuances of certain phrases and trying to put it all back together.” Although Anderson’s instrument of choice is the flute, that’s not his focus when he’s performing TAAB. He’s listening to all the parts in this complex piece. “For me, it’s not about playing the flute; it’s about the guitar parts,” he explained. “There is a lot of acoustic guitar on the album and a lot of it happens the same time the flute’s playing, and I’m singing

“...wait for another concert where we will be playing that material, assuming I’m still alive.”

Like us: 10 0 1

— all three at the same time, which is a complete impossibility so I have to share some of those elements with others in the band. ... So I have to be realistic in the performance of both of these albums. There are places I have to offload to other people because it would be imprudent to try to do things absolutely nonstop and always be either singing or playing or, in some cases, having these difficult passages where there are two acoustic guitars, two flutes, vocals, all happening at the same time.” Anderson also offered some advice to Jethro Tull fans who may be disappointed they won’t hear Tull’s greatest hits in the TAAB show. “It’s better for me to talk about this in advance and make it clear that we are doing a performance of two conceptual pieces and that is the sum total of the performance,” he said. “If people are disappointed they are not going to hear ‘Aqualung’ or ‘Locomotive Breath’ or ‘Cross-Eyed Mary,’ my suggestion is they give this one a miss and wait for another concert where we will be playing that material, assuming I’m still alive.” In addition to being one of the founding gods of prog rock, Anderson has also been a successful businessman. He’s made millions of dollars from a variety of diverse business ventures, including salmon farming. He’s also experienced fame from a different perspective ever since his daughter married actor Andrew Lincoln, who plays Rick Grimes on the popular AMC zombie series The Walking Dead. “These days, when I’ve been out and about, I’ve thought someone is coming to ask me for my autograph or I’m getting a particularly friendly reaction from a restaurant owner or somebody in a Starbucks, but it actually turns out they’re not interested in me at all,” he said. “They’re interested in my son-in-law ... So they tend to recognize him more often. ‘Oh, it’s him, from the telly!’ They don’t always know his name, but it’s always ‘that guy on the television.’ I just pretend I’m his agent. Or his older lover.” ■

Phillips Seafood had a long history of presenting fabulous seafood well before its arrival at the Pier Shops at Caesars. By Frank Gabriel

S AN ORIGINAL RESTAURANT tenant on the third level of the Pier Shops at Caesars, Phillips Seafood has always carried with it a certain undeniable cachet. After all, the Maryland-based enterprise has virtually become synonymous with first-rate Eastern Shore seafood, and our local outlet — number eight in their empire — arrived with great anticipation from both natives and visitors alike. A recent Sunday afternoon trip — and, by the way, a low-traffic time to enjoy the Pier’s eye-catching design elements — proved that the kitchen and wait staff are working to exceed those lofty expectations. Start with the fact that Chef Paul Drew was out of town for the weekend, competing in the annual Chowderfest competition on Long Beach Island. That alone would give some places the opportunity to slip up. No such problems were evident during our visit. In fact, if this is how a kitchen responds to his absence, their training with Drew has been quite exemplary. The visit began with my appetizer, a jumbo lump crabmeat cocktail. Presented in a Martini glass, the inside of which had been lined by shredded lettuce, the snow-white crab practically leapt out. Served simply with a pair of lemon wedges and a mustardy sidecar of dipping sauce, no element upstaged the clean, cold crustacean. Somewhere in the neighborhood of a dozen clusters of meat were included, each one seemingly larger and more naturally delicious than the last. These literally required no accompaniment, as we ate half of them with nothing more than a spritz of citrus. My dining partner also chose a crab-related starter, hers a nightly soup of King crab bisque. Faintly orange-pink, the viscous liquid was milder and sweeter than any lobster variant we’ve ever sampled. Rich and hot,

this luxurious, seasonal creation served as a nice introduction to autumnal dining. Like a warm, welcoming embrace from a friend you haven’t seen in quite some time, the bisque reminded us of the hearty food pleasures which lie ahead in the harvest season. It was also laden with enough King crab to almost fill the sizable bowl. Only a faint layer of broth, steamy and fragrant, disguised the treasured meat. Next up was a pair of salads, highlighted by tableside preparation that is a Phillips signature. Arriving as a large metal bowl filled with colorful lettuces, surrounded by a half dozen smaller glass devices, our classically schooled server walked us through the process. First, he doused greens with their proprietary apple cider vinaigrette, then, whisking gently, added other elements one by one. Cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, feta cheese, red

onion, tiny croutons and bacon all found their way inside prior to a gentle plating. The result was not only crisp and fresh, but also capable of producing an indelible impression upon the patron. You pretty much can’t help but thinking that these people really know what they are doing. My creation was more basic — a combination of baby spinach, arugula and slivered red onion. Finished with a warm bacon dressing, the dual vegetables were just slightly wilted and soft. While this dressing is regularly employed in spinach salads, it is one of the only times we can remember arugula being along for the ride. The pointy greens — called “rocket” in Europe — intense, peppery nature played well with the punched-up dressing and tangy onions. Gazing around the open floor plan, one realizes the multi-purpose functionality

of Phillips’ space. To the side closest the Boardwalk, a cozy bar and lounge area beckons invitingly. At the restaurant’s front flank, both booths and tables are available, elevated and spread out across separate levels to insure clean lines of sight for all. But the place we like best to plunk ourselves down at is one of the many booths surrounding the open, theater-style kitchen. Here, you can experience the entirety of what Phillips’ waterfront location offers — observing cooks carefully tending to their stations, foot traffic moving through the Pier and beyond, the golden sands, blue Atlantic waters and, on this day, a spectacular sunset. My dining partner opted for another tableside speciality as her main course, crab macaroni and cheese. Delivered piping hot just from the oven, a white crock of shell pasta was cautiously removed and turned onto a plate already lined with Texas toast. It’s a tricky procedure requiring fast hands, confidence and a sense for the dramatic. Once transferred, the creamy pasta lounged atop bread like a sexy food siren, imploring us to reach across the table and help ourselves. Luckily, this portion was monumental enough to allow those incursions, yet still provide leftovers. A duet of cheeses, cheddar and provolone, each lent its own personality here. The cheddar, more textural, clung tightly to the pasta. Provolone brought a more delicate nature, showing off its smoky aged essence. Being of a traditional bent on this evening, I decided on a crab cake entree. Given a choice of regular or jumbo sized, we went big. The pair of golden brown mounds arrived chock full of crab pieces, many as large as those in my earlier starter. Broiled to insure even cooking, the cakes were nicely seasoned but not so much as to detract attention from the leading player, those delicate shards of crab. A trio of asparagus stalks, along a wide stripe of a chipotle remoulade, completed the plate. n

a sense of humor. “We like to have a good time and laugh at how ridiculous things can be,” Ian says. “We can’t be serious all the time. What’s the fun in that?” Ian, drummer Charlie Benante and vocalist Joey Belladonna, are funny, good-time boys. Belladonna left the band in 1992, but returned in 2010 in time for the Big Four tour. The band recorded Worship Music, which is the first Anthrax disc since 1990’s Persistence of Time, to include Belladonna’s vocals, which are a perfect fit for Anthrax. Belladonna’s replacement John Bush is the typical metal vocalist, gruff, heavy and not very amusing. Belladonna has charisma to burn, showmanship and an undeniable connection with his bandmates and music. “I can’t say enough about the guy,” Ian says. “Before we played any of the Big Four shows, I heard Joey in rehearsal and I was just blown away. He’s just a mon-

ster and he’s just so great with us. It’s incredible having him back in the fold. He makes a difference.” The vocals from Worship Music were originally laid down by singer Dan Nelson and the album was going to be released in 2009. However, the band and Nelson went their separate ways and Belladonna was brought back into the fold. It was worth the wait. The new songs are nihilistic, irreverent, heavy, sarcastic and well, what made Anthrax such a monster back in its salad days. “I feel like we’re where we need to be,” Ian says. The cool thing is that Anthrax is still together a generation after turning metal on its ear. “It’s crazy that all these years later we’re still doing this,” Ian says. “It’s great. You have no complaints from me. Nobody thinks they’re going to be in a band and it’s going to last decades, but that’s how it’s worked out with us. The cool thing is that we still have original

T COULDN’T HAVE BEEN MORE apt when Anthrax joined forces with Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth for the epic “Big Four” shows in 2010. The quartet of headbanging bands were indeed the big four during the 1980s heyday of metal. While hair metal was lighting up the charts, there was a dark, heavy side of metal bludgeoning fans with an unparalleled aural assault. Anthrax, with one of the coolest, most sinister sounding names in rock history, was right there with Metallica in terms of launching thrash metal. Guitarist Scott Ian helped usher in a popular subgenre of music with his unrelenting playing, along with former co-conspirator Dan Spitz. “Those were the days,” Ian tells Atlantic City Weekly. “It was an exciting time. We were definitely onto something.” But the band that was formed in New York in 1981 offered something more than most of its peers. Anthrax, which will perform Saturday, Oct. 6, at the House of Blues in Atlantic City, eschewed metal clichés and actually had the rarest of quality in the world of headbanging —

guys in the band with me, Charlie and Joey. We still have that chemistry and connection that we had when we were just starting out. We’ve made it through things when there were downs and rode it when things were going really well for us. It didn’t matter whether we were doing great or not so great. We had each other and the music. The music never goes away and the good thing for us is that the audience comes back time and time again.” Ian can look back at touring with some of metal’s monsters, such as the aforementioned Metallica and Slayer. “I remember being blown away by Metallica in those early days,” Ian says. “They were like a well-oiled machine. They’re great guys too. We’ve been out with so many bands and I have so many great memories but the most fun I ever had was with Pantera. It was just nonstop fun and insanity with them. It was crazy and intense and the crowds were great. It’s cool being where we are now because I can look back at all the cool stuff we experienced. I wouldn’t trade any of what I experienced for anything. It’s just been that awesome.” Expect Ian and his bandmates to continue blasting away for many years. “This is what we do and what we do best,” Ian says. “I can’t imagine doing anything else. This is what I’ve done and it’s been the biggest blast.” Ian, one of rock’s great charcters, was the host of VH1’s entertaining Rock Show. During its 48-episode run, Ian interviewed such metal icons as Ozzy Osbourne, Rob Halford and Dave Mustaine. Ian has also lent his warped perspective to such VH1 shows as I Love the ’70s and I Love the ’80s. “It beats working for a living,” Ian says. “I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have some fun opportunities on VH1, but most of all it’s been about this band. I wouldn’t have had VH1 or much of anything without the group, which I still love being a part of.” n

Franklin returns to Atlantic City for a concert at the Trump Taj Mahal on Saturday, Oct. 6. Franklin has sung at President Obama’s 2009 Inauguration; performed opera (“Nessun Dorma”) in place of the late Luciano Pavarotti in a pinch at the 1998 Grammys, turned Otis Redding’s “Respect” into a national anthem for civil rights in the late 1960s and is known worldwide for her many recordings, not to mention her classy shows, fine taste in music and her glorious pipes. Franklin, in Washington D.C. a couple weeks back (late September) to attend the Congressional Black Caucus, sing at the annual Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz drum competition, which she supports, and do some book shopping, spoke to Atlantic City Weekly from her hotel room, where she was nibbling on lunch.

Seeing Dead People Is this old Somers Point house really haunted? By Amanda Hopkins the fear in my eyes,” he recalls. “I tried to brush it off so that I wouldn’t scare him.” Around the same time, Young noticed that the vomit smell was no longer in the house, but everything else seemed to get worse. Young’s son also began taking notice of all the oddities and unexplained events in the home. Their dog would bark and stop dead in its tracks, as if someone — or something — was there. Items would move — on their own. And a sense of foreboding cold was felt in the Somers Point home. One evening, while alone in the house, Young felt as though he were being watched. “I turned around, and that’s when I saw her,” he says. “A woman — wearing a blue dress with a white braided train and collar.” Young says the woman had no hands or feet, and he could only see a broad silhouette. Eventually, Young called in the help of a medium, who used channeling as a means of communicating with the other side. Several sessions with her would reveal an unearthly past to the home. Young learned that three funerals had been held in the home in 1904: George Denver who had died from drowning; an unidentified woman who had died of infection; and two-year-old Virginia Murphy who died from polio. It was commonplace in the 1900s for funerals to be held in people’s homes, and the caskets would sit out overnight in the home. “None of them were the ghosts in my home,” says Young. The medium (Sharon) told Young that the three spirits who inhabited his home were not associated with the home in any way, but rather they came because they wanted to be there. Sharon identified the spirits as Agnus, a 78-year-old woman who lived between 1820 and 1998; and two children — Jonathon, a 10-year-old boy who passed on in 1851, and Sarah, a two-year-old girl who died in the 1920s from scarlet fever. “Agnus was with me since I was 30,” says Young. “She came into my life because I was married and divorced and began to push people away. Agnus was like that in her life, and ended up a lonely old woman. She didn’t want me to end

up that way.” And the children, Young says, came because of Agnus, who acted as a grandmother figure to them. The medium also told Young that a fourth spirit had also visited the home — while his wife was still living there. “It was a dark spirit who liked the anger and deception going on between us, and it left when she left,” says Young. Sharon said that this dark spirit was the cause of the vomit smell, a common trait of demonic presence, according to many paranormal investigators. Paranormal events continued to happen in the Young home for seven years. But Young said he was no longer afraid. He knew that these spirits were not there to hurt him. He began to talk and interact with them, leaving toys for them to play with. “My niece was fascinated with the fact my house was haunted,” says Young, pulling out three photos. The photographs were of his son and niece putting on a Thanksgiving play for the family in his living room. In the first photograph, a small circular illumination, known as an orb, can be seen above his niece’s head. In the second, a larger orb appears a few centimeters away. The third photograph shows an even larger orb, again in a different spot in the image. “Orbs grow when spirits are happy,” Young explains. While many ghost investigators believe orbs to be proof of spirits on camera, others disprove them as dust or particles on a camera lens. Were these orbs in Young’s photographs a sign of a spirit or just a coincidence? Young’s neighbors believe the house is haunted, but some think he is crazy. “A lot of people don’t believe,” says Young. “Until it happens to them.” Young says he has not experienced any activity in the home in about a year, and thinks that perhaps his spirit friends have moved on. He has written three books that document his story in more detail: A Father, A Son, and a House Full of Ghosts (Volumes 1, 2, and 3). n

‘There’s something in this house.’

FEW YEARS AFTER PURCHASING his home on Connecticut Avenue in Somers Point, Gregory Young began to wonder if someone — or something — else was living there too. After purchasing the home in 2000, Young resided in the home with his then-wife and 10-year-old son Joseph. Young recalls that early on, his wife suspected that they weren’t alone. She had a bad feeling, like she was being watched, and the “smell of vomit” was perpetually coming from the dining room. One afternoon, she was thrown down the basement stairs on her way to do laundry. “My wife came upstairs and said, ‘There’s something in this house. And it doesn’t like me,’” Young recalls. Young says that, at the time, he did not believe the house was haunted, nor did he believe in ghosts. It was shortly after the fall that Young’s wife moved out, after nearly two years of a troubled marriage, when Young began experiencing unexplained phenomena in the home first-hand.

According to Young, his kitchen was the place with the most activity. The lights would go off and the light switch would go dead, for days at a time. The clock in his kitchen also stopped, and continued to malfunction after Young replaced the batteries. “One night, I had three candles burning, and all of a sudden all three candles went out, as if they had been blown out,” says Young, adding that there were no windows or doors open, and no fan or air conditioner had been on. A few weeks later, Young purchased a brand new set of utensils, to seat eight. Happy with his new purchase and eager to replace his old silverware, Young washed his new set and arranged it in a kitchen drawer. The next morning, Young opened the drawer, and there sitting in the drawer was an old antique fork. Young was puzzled; the fork was quite aged, and he had never seen it before. Young began to wonder if he was losing his sanity, but he knew what he saw. Young was scared. “My son could see

and filmmakers at various press conferences at the festival. • Director Paul Thomas Anderson on the postwar setting of his film The Master. The story, after a war, is an opportunity. There is a mix of tremendous optimism but an incredibly large body count behind you. How can you feel really great about being victorious with so much death around? what happens after you die. The Master is putting forth those ideas — time travel is possible, accessing things that happened to you in past lives is possible. Those are great ideas, those are hopeful ideas. Those were the ideas that were fascinating to me to write a story around. • Joseph Gordon-Levitt (about Looper) on doing a sci-fi movie that has something to say: I want a fun time going to the movies, but I also want something to talk about after it’s over, not walking out of the cinema saying, ‘Cool. Where are we going to eat?’ I want something to think about. Maybe something I’ll keep thinking about, and Looper really has both of those sides. • Bruce Willis on his Looper experience: It seems like an impossible task, to act with someone who is supposed to be you, the younger you. At some point you have to let go and just believe that you’re in the story. Science fiction films are especially like magic tricks. They [are designed to] fool you. When I saw the film I was so surprised that the magic trick we were trying

HEN CLINT EASTWOOD GOT smart and realized he couldn’t pull off the aging action hero anymore he switched gears and created a new iconic persona, the grumpy old man with the gravely whisper of a voice who reluctantly lets his emotions break through his hard veneer. This persona served him spectacularly in two films he directed, Million Dollar Baby and Grand Torino. It still works, but to a lesser degree, in Trouble With the Curve, directed by Eastwood’s long-time producing partner Robert Lorenz. Eastwood plays veteran Atlanta Braves scout Gus Lobel, who discovered many of the Braves top players over the years, from Dale Murphy to Chipper Jones. However, in this “what have you done for me lately?” world, he is being pushed out the door by the young guns who make personnel decisions using statistics and computer analysis rather than keen observation in the field. In the movie Moneyball, which championed the new wave of sabermetrics, the old-school scouts were ridiculed; this movie reverses that process. Grumpy Gus is losing his sight, so when his pal and director of scouting Pete (John Goodman) sends him out to check out the latest can’t-miss prospect, Pete asks Gus’s daughter Mickey (Amy Adams) to go with him. Thus, the movie becomes a father-daughter bonding film, with Mickey wanting to confront abandonment issues and Gus wanting to duck the showdown. Justin Timberlake is along for the ride as Johnny, a scout for the Red Sox, and as the most perfunctory of romantic partners. When Johnny and Mickey go for a night swim, I suddenly wished this were a horror movie and something was lurking under the water to take Johnny under. Eastwood and Adams are fine together, and as a baseball fan who agrees with the traditional side of the scouting argument, Trouble With the Curve is acceptable lightweight entertainment.
