oward Sherman, arts consultant and commentator, will participate in the Stockton Performing Arts Lecture Series next Thursday at the Dante Hall Theatre in Atlantic City. Atlantic City works to bring new life, art and visitors to improve the quality of life for local residents. Sherman is taking part in this movement by exploring the marketing and branding challenges and opportunities for a community that is committed to displaying the arts as a forefront and outward image of the area. Sherman was the executive director of the American Theatre Wing from 2003-2011. During this time, Sherman’s responsibilities varied from executive producer, moderator of specific television and audio programs, utilizing the Web for social media and communication purposes, envisioning the book The Play That Changed My Life, serving on the Tony Awards Management and Administration committees and he was influential to the development of ATW’s National Theatre Company Grants program. Prior to joining ATW, Sherman spent three years as the executive director of the Eugene O’Neil Theatre Center in Waterford, Conn., where he oversaw the Theatre Center’s educational and developmental program. he state Gaming Enforcement Division announced on Friday, Oct. 4, that Atlantic City’s 12 casinos may begin a “soft play” period of Internet gambing on Nov. 21 for invited guests. If everything checks out, the casinos can begin full Internet gambling at 9am on Tuesday, Nov. 26. Internet gambling is yet another element of revenue that has been hailed as a possible savior for Atlantic City’s gaming industry, which continues to take an economic hit because of increased competition from surrounding states. The revenue will stay in the state because gamblers would have to be physically located within New Jersey’s boundaries in order to play. New Jersey will be the third state in the nation to offer online gambling, along with Nevada and Delaware. Atlantic City’s casino revenue has gone from a high of $5.2 billion in 2006 to just over $3 billion last year. Many of the casinos had previous announced online partners for this new venture, including Taj Mahal Casino Resort with Ultimate Gaming, the Tropicana with Gamesys Limited and the Borgata with bwin.party. The Golden Nugget Atlantic City is offering its own system using Bally Technologies.

ou may have heard about it or even seen it on ESPN. But, what exactly, is CrossFit? CrossFit is a sport that optimizes fitness with constantly varied, functional movements performed at relatively high intensity. It’s modifiable and adaptable for any age and any fitness level. Unique to CrossFit is the sense of community that seems to spontaneously arise when people do these workouts together. The communal aspect of CrossFit is a key component to why it’s so effective. With that in mind, you can join CrossFit OTG’s fitness community on Saturday, Oct. 12, for their Strength/Fitness/Skill Fall Competition. The area’s top 40 male and female athletes advance from CrossFit OTG’s Online Qualifier to the SFS Competition to discover the top three in each division. This competition will include multiple workouts, skills and lifts that are specifically designed to discover the three fittest male and female competitors in the area. Although the qualification round has concluded, spectators and volunteers are encouraged to attend and discover what CrossFit is all about. CrossFit OTG is hosting this competition to create awareness, growth and opportunity for people to participate in the sport of fitness. This also gives athletes the chance to compete against other local athletes. The competition will run from 8am-4:30pm at CrossFit OTG located at 3330 Bargaintown Rd., Egg Harbor Twp (Atlantic County). For more information visit crossfitotg.com or call 513-9164.

By Ray Schweibert • feedback@acweekly.com veryone knows that music is good for the soul, so to soothe the souls of those putting themselves through what might be the most grueling endurance test of their lives, the Equity Communications radio group is again lining the A.C. Marathon Series race route with live entertainment at several cheer zones Sunday from 9am-1pm. “Our cheer zones along the A.C. Marathon Series race route have become bigger and better every year through help from the community, encouraging runners with custom cheer signs [which can be customized, free of charge, at the affiliated Sport-andFitness Expo at Caesars Ballroom Friday, 3-8pm, and Saturday, 11am-6pm, Oct. 10-11], and with local bands and DJs contributing to the excitement,” says Shannon Wray, entertainment chairperson for the A.C. Marathon, and director of marketing/ promotions for Equity Communications. “Throughout the year, 95.1 WAYV, 100.7 WZXL, 96.1 WTTH The Touch and 99.3 The Buzz have a call-out to bands and entertainers of all kinds looking to join the fun. Locations were chosen along the race route to coordinate with water stops and natural gathering spots.” All bands and DJs are volunteering their time to show support for the runners, says Wray, including Mike Richman of the Mike and Diane Morning Show on WAYV. Richman is also the official emcee of the A.C. Marathon and Half Marathon. Additionally, all four interactive radio-station vans will be situated at various sites along the race route playing a variety of music genres. Radio station representatives will also be handing out cheer signs to race fans along the route as well. “They can decorate their own signs and support their friends and family while they are running,” says Wray. “And as entertainment chairperson I understand how important uplifting music can be for runners. Our goal is to entertain and encourage participants in all four races, while generating excitement within the community.” Sunday’s music-accompanied cheer zones are as follows: Kennedy Plaza outside of Boardwalk Hall — The five-piece local band Motherload will cover a variety of songs from classic to modern rock, funk and reggae, and music from the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s. The band includes lead vocalist/keyboardist Jason Wingerter, lead guitarits/vocalist Dave Censullo, rhythm guitarist/vocalist Jason Ryerson, bassist Ramon Lewis and drummer Walt “Chip” Chipley.

hen the Atlantic City Alliance came into existence two years ago, one mission of the casino-funded agency was to develop ways to sell Atlantic City as a destination resort to separate it from other gaming-centric regional markets. Another was to attract more media interest in the city, especially television. To that end, the ACA has already spent tens of millions of dollars on multi-media advertising campaigns — a “call to action” in ACA-speak — and on a variety of events and projects designed to set Atlantic City apart from the competition. Some programs were successful; others yielded less-thanstellar results and attracted more criticism than praise. But all were unique and had never been considered in the past, right? Not exactly. As my television producer and I were preparing to launch a series of shows to mark the 20th anniversary of our Curtain Call program, we recently found an amazingly insightful chat we had in 1995 with entertainer, talk show host and businessman Merv Griffin. At the time, Griffin’s diverse interests outside the entertainment industry included ownership of Resorts Casino Hotel, which has changed hands several times since he sold Atlantic City’s flagship casino hotel in 1996. No one from the Atlantic City Alliance was around the city 18 years ago. Neither were any of the people running Atlantic City’s 12 casino properties today. It wouldn’t have mattered if they were, because at the time our show was airing in 85 markets around the country — but not in the Delaware Valley. So Griffin’s observations then about the state of Atlantic City and its future fell on deaf ears, at least locally. Only a handful of casinos outside Atlantic City and Nevada had opened at the time. Most were Native American-owned properties like Foxwoods, the Connecticut casino that opened in 1992, but at the time didn’t pose much of a threat to Atlantic City. Yet in 1995, Griffin realized Atlantic City had to prepare for increased competition for the gaming and leisure dollar. Although Atlantic City was well on its way to becoming a $5.3 billion gaming market, just being in the gambling business was no longer enough, he said. “I don’t think it’s enough anymore just to have a casino,” said Griffin, who died in 2007 at age 82. “I’m talking about the all-encompassing entertainment experience.

You’ve got to have stars, you’ve got to have the greatest food, you’ve [got] to have tournaments and you’ve got to have beach events. You’ve got to have some civic things other than the Miss America [Competition].” Griffin was a Merv-come-lately to the gaming business when he wrestled control of Resorts away from Donald Trump in 1988 — Merv got Resorts and The Donald got the unfinished Taj Mahal casino project. But Griffin had a keen understanding of how casinos worked. For years, he broadcast his talk show from Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. However, during his Atlantic City tenure he often griped about the lack of cooperation and every-property-for-itself attitude of local casino operators of the era. That was never clearer than when Griffin broadcast a live, nationally televised New Year’s Eve special from his casino hotel for six years. Atlantic City’s casinos only reluctantly allowed Griffin to showcase their New Year’s headliners on his TV show. It was just the opposite in Las Vegas, he recalled. “When I used to do my show from Caesars [Palace] for all those years in Las Vegas, we had the greatest cooperation from every other [casino],” he said. “Because I would bring their stars on, and the star would do a song or a dance or whatever they did. But we would also talk about [the other casino], and there was the greatest synergy between places. They don’t have that here. They’re all just so competitive, they don’t speak to one another.” Eighteen years later, during his first public remarks since assuming the position of senior vice president and general manager of Harrah’s Resort, Rick Mazer last week repeated Griffin’s words about more cooperation and less competition between casinos — without even knowing of Griffin’s observations nearly two decades ago. While the Atlantic City Alliance and the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority continue to dream up ways of giving a new look to the city, they might consider Griffin’s suggestion from 1995. “I think [the city] should bring in a set designer, not an architect, but a set designer like we’ve worked with all of our lives in television, and give this whole Boardwalk a feeling,” he said. “Do some cosmetic things to it, attach some things to the buildings, give it an overall feel.” n

T

wo o’clock on a sunny, unseasonably warm October Friday afternoon. By this time of day, ordinary bakeries have long shuttered their doors, already anticipating morning weekend sales. An exception to that norm is Mays Landing’s Brownie’s Squared Bake Shop, located steps from the Atlantic County Courthouse, midway between the dual waterways of Lake Lenape and the Tuckahoe River. On this day, customers keep streaming in — some still in search of pastries or other treats, others for something savory from this lovely little café’s selection of midday offerings. The story of how Brownies Squared — heretofore referred to as B2 — came to be is as intriguing as the eclectic collection of foodstuff they vend. Founder/owner Chris Groome, 37, an Egg Harbor Township native, opened B2 on Dec. 3, 2009, which the well-traveled chef, who took over an established bakery that had been closed for several months, now says “seems like a thousand years ago.” Since that time Groome, who also possesses an MBA, has not only crafted a oneof-a-kind artisanal shop, but also a series of once-a-month dinners called the “Super Secret Supper Club,” which remain unique and singular in our region. Those evenings are true gastronomic events, the very stuff that food dreams are made of, featuring such fare as chilled potato and apple soup, five-spice spaetzle with Rumspringen plums, bacon-wrapped golden watermelon, chicken skin BLT and sunflower donut, cheddar pretzel bite and apple butter mousse, rabbit pot pie, shoo-fly tart and more. To fully understand how all this came

Those evenings are true gastronomic events, the very stuff that food dreams are made of. about, a bit of Groome’s background is necessary. Bored with high school, he opted to attend Rhode Island’s prestigious Johnson & Wales University, and finish his matriculation there in a special program combining his senior year with freshman college studies. After completing his degree, Groome stayed on as a chef/instructor, eventually working at the nearby J&W owned Seekonk Resort, just across the state line in Massachusetts. He then did what many a youthful chef has done prior, hitting the road in search of culinary inspiration.

After stints in Atlantic City at the Trump Taj Mahal and Boardwalk Hall, a pair of Wilmington, Delaware restaurants, the new Wildwood Convention Center, a tapas eatery in Frederick, Maryland, and the well-known Brass Rail in Hoboken, Groome stumbled upon available space close to home. His cooking philosophy may be best summed up by one simple sentence uttered with the greatest degree of earnestness imaginable: “I don’t want to reheat.” Earlier experience in new ventures helped him greatly as his career progressed. Those skill sets provided him a foundation upon

which he has built a thriving, exemplary enterprise. “I was fortunate with Wildwood, and with the two restaurants in Wilmington, to be there at and before opening,” says Groome. Beyond dazzling baked goods and desserts, currently featuring stuff like pumpkin crème brulee, rocky road mousse cup, pumpkin cherry cheesecake, chocolate banana tarts, fruit-filled pie pockets and a decadent maple bacon brownie, B2 also serves soups, sandwiches, to-go loaves of bread and some of the best pizza dough this writer has ever encountered. The latter is also a ridiculous bargain, priced at only $1.50 for regular dough and $2 for whole wheat. But those Super Secret Supper Club dinners are what have really captured the attention of the local culinary community. Currently, Groome is working on a 22nd monthly edition set for Friday and Saturday nights, Oct. 25-26. Friday meals are shorter, introductory versions featuring four courses, while Saturday diners should expect upward of 12 different tasting plates. That same weekend Groome also plans a Saturday sidewalk sale to coincide with the town’s annual Halloween parade. Perhaps the most astonishing thing about the Super Secret Supper Club is this: B2 has yet to repeat any of its menu items. “It’s just another way to be creative,” he says. Groome is remarkably candid and straightforward about the cuisine he serves. “It’s not for everyone, nor do I try to make it for everyone” he says. “But we have a core group of about 40 people who have been here most of the time. We feel very fortunate.” ■

Speed Racers

Reasons vary for accepting the Atlantic City Marathon challenge, but many agree the fast, flat, scenic course brings out their personal best. By Ray Schweibert • feedback@acweekly.com

S

which for many is the mere challenge of completing a marathon. DiBartolo hopes to go below 3 hours, 30 minutes [he was 3:34 in A.C. in 2012, good enough for 80th place overall out of nearly 700 marathon finishers]. For Bonnie Berchtold Johnson of EHT, running marathons (Sunday’s will be her eighth; her first was in A.C. in 2005) began as a way to challenge herself and be an inspiration to others. This year she is running, in part, to raise awareness for Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia, which took the life of her great niece, Brielle Theresa Santo. “I started running later in life, approximately 13 years ago, after one of my older brothers had a massive heart attack that almost took his life,” says Berchtold Johnson, 52. “I decided to start getting healthy, and it seemed the more I ran the more endurance I had, so I decided to take the challenge of a marathon. “I am inspired by so many people, including my cousin, Kim Berk, who has defeated breast cancer not once but twice, and seeing her complete a marathon was a personal favorite,” she adds. “It’s just so exciting getting out there with other runners and hearing what motivates them, but most of

all I love to run outside and see the beautiful views around me that our heavenly father has created. This year we again have a large group running, including our young cousin, Kaylee Mankow, who is running her first marathon.” Derek Reinhold and Brett Rogowski are members of the same running contingent from North Wales, Pa., and both meet the criteria of distance-running elite. Reinhold was the top American finisher in A.C. last year (fifth overall in 2:52.37) and Rogowski was seventh (2:56.26), unknowingly pacing the top female finisher (Gedesa Edeto of New York City, originally from Ethiopia) to victory (2:55.54, sixth overall). Three of the top males ahead of Reinhold were Ethiopian (the winner was Berhanu Mekonen in 2:22.15), and the fourth was from Kenya. Both Reinhold and Rogowski easily qualified for the 117th running of the Boston Marathon, held last April, with their A.C. times. Rogowski, 40, writes up a report after each distance race he competes in, and shared his Atlantic City synopsis with AC Weekly. He also shared vivid details of his experience running in the 2013 Boston Marathon, which of course was marred by

Details: Two days of racing includes the Marathon, the Half Marathon, the Shore Medical Center 5K and 10K races, and the Kids Fit Final Mile. A Sports & Fitness Expo will be held in Caesars Atlantic City Palladium Ballroom on Fri., Oct. 11, 3-8pm, and Sat., Oct. 12, 11am-6pm. The expo is free and open to the public. About 4,500 runners are expected between the four competitive races combined. Saturday, Oct. 12: Shore Medical Center 5K and 10K races start 9am on the Boardwalk in front of Bally’s. The Kids Fit Final Mile starts 11am. Sunday, Oct. 13: The A.C. Marathon and Half Marathon start 8am on the Boardwalk in front of Bally’s. The awards ceremony starts 11am at the same location. The Marathon course will remain open for six hours (until 2pm). Cash awards go to the top-three male and female finishers in each of the four races, including $2,000 to the male and female Marathon winners and $1,000 to the Half Marathon winners. The 2013 A.C. Marathon serves as a qualifier for the 2014 Boston Marathon in April. On the Web: acmarathon.org

“Seeing the finish line is one of the best feelings in the world. Everything that hurts goes away and your acomplishment sets in.”

ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY • OCTOBER 10 - 16, 2013

ometimes Atlantic City’s natural, nautical beauty and myriad other amenities seem to receive mention only as selling points in the face of increased gaming competition elsewhere, but they have served to attract visitors to the resort town long before gaming even arrived here in the late 1970s. For the past 55 years, the Atlantic City Marathon — the third oldest marathon in the nation (and second oldest continuousrunning) behind Boston and New York City, the former of which uses the A.C. race as a time qualifier — is an event endurance athletes have loved as much for the scenic running route as the availability for a fun time in town after the race. And who could argue they did not earn the right to have some fun once the 26.2-mile race is over? “I’m definitely partial to the A.C. marathon course as it’s my home turf, and the place where most of my summer training takes place,” says Margate resident Adam DiBartolo, who will be running his sixth marathon (including his third in A.C.) on Sunday morning, Oct. 13. “There are lots of Boardwalk miles that my running group [NJ Shore Run Club] and I put in almost every weekend during the spring and summer, running a good portion of the course. “The event is very well organized and really highlights the best of what the area can do when the communities and the casinos all work together,” adds DiBartolo. “Volunteers also make up a large part of the effort, and there really is nothing better than seeing so many hometown faces all out along the course. I’ll be volunteering again this year for the Saturday events [which include the 5K and 10K races, and Kids Fit Final Mile].” Every runner has specific goals in mind,

a terrorist attack that killed three people and injured 264. (Read Rogowski’s entire account of the Boston Marathon at acweekly.com. Excerpts of his 2012 Atlantic City Marathon race are as follows, and will be posted in full at acweekly.com.) “I’d run that course again in a heartbeat — flat, fast and low key. Perfect for a personal best in my opinion … The Atlantic City Marathon doesn’t draw the crowds like Chicago, New York or Boston. Nonetheless, 26.2 miles in any race is daunting. I looked up at the banner that was swaying in the wind [before the race]. It was going to be a rough day fighting the wind … “I crossed the mat at the 5K mark in 20:32 and picked up the pace a bit to get back on track. Rounding the bend at mile four, a small shadow lurked behind me. Turning my neck a bit more, a small Ethiopian woman was hot on my heels but she did not pass. Her name was Gedese Edeto and was the lead female for the race. I was running her pace. I was also a hell of a shield for her due to the strong winds. I actually didn’t mind her following because I had her and [bicycle assistant] Steve to converse with … Gedese didn’t say much. When she did speak, it was in broken English and I had a hard time understanding … “I can tell you that in running, seeing the finish line is one of the best feelings in the world. Everything that hurts goes away and your accomplishment sets in. At times, this is overwhelming. I finished the race in 2 hours and 56 minutes — not my best time but without question, as my coach put it, my best effort in a marathon to date. I crossed the finish line and fell onto the Boardwalk on all fours. I was severely dehydrated and exhausted, but I was elated … I walked to the end of the chute, collected my medal, and waiting was Gedese. She looked and me and started crying. She limped over to me, I towered over her as she hugged me tight and in broken English said ‘Thank you.’ I hugged her back. I had literally paced her to victory.” ■

Dr. Cornel West Speaks at Stockton One of the great minds of our time gives keynote speech at Stockton College’s 10th annual Fannie Lou Hamer Human and Civil Rights Symposium. By Jeff Schwachter • feedback@acweekly.com “I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired.” — Fannie Lou Hamer, Atlantic City, 1964

OCTOBER 10 - 16, 2013 • ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY

W

hen Stockton College president Herman Saatkamp introduced the keynote speaker at the 10th annual Fannie Lou Hamer Human and Civil Rights Symposium on Thursday, Oct. 3, inside the college’s Performing Arts Center as “one of the most thoughtful, challenging, democratic intellectuals in the country,” he was not just greasing the wheels before Dr. Cornel West took the podium before a sold-out audience. West, who applauded Stockton for being the only school he knew of to have an annual remembrance of the Civil Rights leader, made extraordinary connections between the college and Hamer — dating back to the American Revolution — as well as Stockton, Calif., near his hometown of Sacramento, and the many folks before and after Stockton and Hamer whose courage in the face of despair has been and still is an inspiration for all who fight for justice and equality around the world. “I never allow despair to have the last word,” Dr. West said, as he painted a vivid portrait of Mississippi’s Hamer. The program for the 10th annual symposium, co-sponsored by the college’s Africana Studies Program and the Unified Black Students Society, was “Voices of Courage: The Enduring Legacy of the Civil Rights Movement,” and along with keynote speaker West, a distinguished panel, including Dr. Gwendolyn Long Harris (Executive Director of the Walter Rand Institute for Public Affairs at Rutgers University), James Harris (New Jersey Chapter, NAACP), Dr. Michelle McDonald (Associate Professor of History) and Dr. Patricia Reid-Merritt (Distingished Professor of Social Work and Africana Studies, The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey

facebook.com/ACWeekly @acweekly

— and the moderator of the symposium) led a discussion and answered questions from the audience following Dr. West’s 50-minute speech to the sold-out PAC crowd. Dr. Reid-Merritt, who prefaced West’s engaging speech following remarks by Dr. Saatakamp, told the crowd that the 10th annual symposium was nearly cancelled because not one of the elected officials that she had asked to be the keynote speaker at the event had gotten back to her. Three weeks prior to the symposium, however, she reached out to Dr. West and he said: “I will be there.” While Dr. West — a professor of Philosophy and Christian Practice at the Union Theological Seminary in New York City; an author and editor of nearly 35 books and a former teacher at Yale, Harvard and Princeton — can be seen frequently on The Bill Maher Show, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and Tavis Smiley’s PBS TV show, in person he is a marvel to experience. Speaking in simple, succinct language, Dr. West makes big ideas — complicated ideas — easy to understand, easy to follow and easy to trace back to their roots. At the same time, which is a testament to his genius, Dr. West has the power to widen the scope of people’s thinking by supplying extraordinary information, grand details and startling connections without sounding stuffy, pretentious or academic. In fact, Dr. West not only spoke about the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, as well as President Barack Obama during his speech — “There is no Barack Obama without Fannie Lou Hamer and her legacy,” he said. “I love the brother, but I hate injustice and folks suffering,” he added, with regard to the Obama Administration’s use of drone warfare. “A baby killed in Yemen or Somalia by a drone, is just as precious as a baby killed in Newtown, Connecticut … or a baby killed

on the east side of Los Angeles” — but included figures such as Nina Simone, Jay-Z, Sly Stone, Lupe Fiasco, George Orwell, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Marvin Gaye, George Clinton, Samuel Beckett, Albert Einstein, Malcolm X and Marvin Gaye in his inspiring speech, drawing many parallels to pop culture and to world history. He told the audience, “Let the phones be smart; I want to be wise,” while pushing the students gathered to “question America,” and to get beyond “the me, me, me, I, I, I, selfishness of our market-driven culture – that’s Fannie Lou Hamer.” Fifteen minutes prior to the start of the Thursday afternoon symposium, which attracted a wide swath of Stockton students, faculty, alumni and others, Dr. West was gracious enough to take the time to give a short interview to Atlantic City Weekly. Along with admitting he didn’t own a computer and only had a cell phone “for my daughter to reach me,” the eloquent professor answered a few questions with his always remarkably profound and immediate thoughtfulness. For people who may not know who Fannie Lou Hamer is, what is her legacy? Fannie Lou Hamer is one of the great freedom fighters of the 20th century. She was rooted in Mississippi. She was a truth teller. She bore witness to truth with a level of courage that was very rare not just at this point of the 20th century but I think just rare in the human experience. She was deeply shaped by family and church in Mississippi. She struggled against the American terrorism in the U.S. South. She, in some ways, associated with Martin Luther King Jr., Stokely Carmichael, Bob Moses, Diane Nash — but it’s really to say that she is part of the black freedom movement. She always had a universal vision, embraced people of different colors, different cultures, but believed in the

Fannie Lou Hamer has an important link to Atlantic City, which is just 10 minutes or so away, as well, where she brought the Democratic Mississippi Freedom Party she helped to form because there was an allwhite delegation going to the 1964 Democratic National Convention being held in Atlantic City, which was obviously not a delegation that was true to the people of the southern state. That’s right. The racism there in the Democratic Party there in the South required her to engage in a form of self respect and self determination and she said, well, we’ll have our own party. And it was just down the way [in Atlantic City] and she spoke on national television and she pushed the country and the president; LBJ said, ‘We have to establish an immediate press conference. Let me make a speech to take the focus off what she’s saying.’ That’s strong — a U.S. president. Here we are nearly 50 years after Fannie Lou Hamer helped to form the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party and in doing so bringing to the attention of millions of Americans — even getting the U.S. president, as you mention, to get flustered because I think he knew the civil rights of so many Americans were being denied in a time when those same Americans were being sent to Vietnam to fight for Uncle Sam and freedom, while their own freedoms were still being denied at home — the tactics being used to prevent blacks from voting and being represented, and yet, all these decades later, even with an African-American man in office, there are still instances of this kind of unconstitutional attempt to block certain Americans from voting. It’s true. I mean, it’s a perennial struggle. The struggle that she was engaged in, in terms of full-fledged citizenship rights, remains a challenge. We’ve made magnificent progress in terms of presidents and governors and members of Congress and so forth, and yet at the same time you’ve got other forces that make it difficult for slices of Americans, slices of black Americans to gain the right to vote. But, you see, Fannie Lou Hamer, she made a connection between voting, the poor peoples’ movement and critique of Vietnam. She was a very strong critic of American imperialism in Vietnam and Asia — early on, [putting] pressure on King [to act]. And [she] was a very important part of the poor peoples’ campaign that King himself had moved towards at the end of his life. So in some ways, she was even a step ahead of Martin Luther King. Oh yeah. In the early ‘60s. That’s right. ■ see more online @

President and founder of the Downbeach Film Festival, William Sokolic, said he is especially proud of the special student project at this year’s event. Thanks to a $200,000 grant from the Philadelphia-based Wyncote Foundation, Rowan University has joined with student filmmakers from five colleges and universities to produce documentaries and social media campaigns on the topic of

sexual assault on college campuses. Just one of the horrifying facts about this topic is that before they graduate, one in four college women will be sexually assaulted. Led by Rowan professors Ned Eckhardt (the grant’s author and principal investigator), Keith Brand and Diana Nicolae, the Collaborative Documentary Project brought together professors and student filmmakers from California State-Northridge, Northern Illinois and Framingham State universities and Western State College of Colorado to

Other films that Sokolic calls the “best of the fest” include the feature The Starks Coalition, directed by Harris Haith, which features scenes filmed locally. It will be presented Saturday, 2:45pm, at Dante Hall. The opening night feature, The Honour, presented on Friday, Oct. 11, 7:30pm at Dante Hall from director Tony Picciotti, is a drama about Christian Conservative Sarah who discovers her daughter Judith is gay and in love with a Muslim neighbor. Enraged by her prejudices, Sarah will do anything to save the immoral soul of her daughter. Another highlight is the feature Gravedigger, from producer and star Keith Collins, directed by Doug Bollinger. Filmed in New Jersey, a vigilante serial killer is stalking, killing and burying those he has judged guilty and anyone in this corrupt town could be next. Solokic calls it, “An entertaining horror comedy.” Also in the category of funny and entertaining is Little Bi Peep by filmmaker Jon Russell Cring (Sunday, 12:15pm, Carnegie Center). The to-the-point synopsis of the film is, “Sleepless, hopeless, and out of love.” A documentary to look for is Troupers (Saturday, 6:45pm, Dante Hall), which takes a look at 12 working actors in Hollywood over 80 and how they have managed to survive in show business. It’s directed by Sara Ballantine, whose late father Carl Ballantine was a magician and a regular on McHale’s Navy. This year’s celebrity honoree at the festival is actress Dominique Swain, whose numerous credits include Face/Off, Alpha Dog and Out of Season. She will take part in a special screening/Q & A on Sunday, 2:15pm at the Carnegie Center. For the complete list of films, visit the Web site downbeachfilmfestival.org. ■

Farewell Gentle Jim James Gandofini in ‘Enough Said’; plus Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s ‘Don Jon’ By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com

T

he shocking death of Sopranos’ star James Gandofini this past June at the age of 51 adds a wistful sadness while watching the gentle romantic comedy Enough Said. For those whose concept of Gandofini is shaped by The Sopranos and his numerous other tough-guy film roles (most of us are in that category), it’s surprising and delightful watching him embody the gentle and soulful man he plays in Nicole Holofcener’s film. The movie stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Eva, a divorced, single parent and door-to-door masseuse (her clunky, barely portable table is an amusing running gag).

She is terrified at the thought of living alone, with her daughter soon going off to college. One night at a party she meets Albert (Gandofini), also divorced with a daughter about to leave for college, who is equally distressed at the notion of her departure. A sweet, understated romance commences with promise except for a dealbreaking secret. When Eva figures out that her new client and friend Marianne (Holofcener regular Catherine Keener), is in fact Albert’s ex-wife, Eva keeps the news to herself.

This choice puts a wedge in the relationship since Eva starts looking at her new lover through the perspective of Marianne’s consistent nagging about the numerous flaws of her ex. Never has a dislike of raw onions been so effectively revealed as a serious character flaw than in this quietly intriguing movie. The beautiful performances hold together a story that is both light and airy, yet with a serious thread running through it about how people sometimes act hurtfully to protect themselves from pain. This is Eva’s dilemma. Eventually she realizes her fear of pain was destined to make her life miserable when the truth comes out in awkward fashion. Dreyfus’ Eva has a knack for letting us know how much she hates some aspects of her life by just using body language; her character is often too passive to speak her mind. When she won’t defend Albert, that passivity becomes a crutch we wish she would throw away. Gandofini, from all accounts, is playing a character closer to who he was in real life than his careerchanging role in The Sopranos. As always, Keener delivers just the perfect compliment to the other actors, in this case as the woman who can’t shut up about a man she divorced years ago. Enough Said is a lovely coda to an actor whose career was cut short to soon.

Love Lessons

Don Jon is the directorial debut of actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who also stars in and wrote the movie. He goes for a slicked-back hair Jersey Shore look as a New Jersey lothario who beds plenty of women, but none of them live up to the fantasies of his online porn addiction. He finds his match in gorgeous, confident Barbara (Scarlett Johansson), whose romantic ideals have been equally warped by her obsession with romantic comedies. Jon thinks his love of porn is no big deal, but eventually with the help of a new friend (played by Julianne Moore), he begins to get that when one finds true love, the appeal of porn will lose its hold on him. Gordon-Levitt has a blast playing a guy so far removed from his other previous characters, and Tony Danza is hilarious as his loud, obnoxious father. Don Jon is a solid debut, but my guess is that Gordon-Levitt will have some more exciting cinematic adventures for us as his career behind the camera continues. n
