he return of the Miss America Pageant to Atlantic City brought a lot of excitement to town but Atlantic City continues to be the home for the Ms. Senior America Pageant, this year taking place Oct. 22-24 at Resorts. The Pageant motivates and encourages women to utilize their full potential and share a positive outlook on life with others. Judged on their philosophy of life, evening gown and talent, the contestants will walk the runway at the Superstar Theater on Tuesday, Oct. 22, at 1 and 7pm and Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 1pm in the preliminary competitions, with the finals taking place on Thursday, Oct. 24, at 1pm. Tickets are $26.75 for the preliminaries, and $32.75 for the finals, available from Ticketmaster. The reigning Ms. Senior America from California is Elisabeth Howard, an opera singer and nationally acclaimed vocal coach. There are 29 contestants and if you are looking for a local rooting interest, Ms. Senior New Jersey is Vanessa Shaw, Ms. Senior New York is Virginia Werner and Ms. Senior Pennsylvania is Vicki Rogers. orlds collide — literally — in the music of the Brooklyn-based band Barbez. Bella Ciao,, the group’s fifth album, released on John Zorn’s Tzadik label in late August, weaves together ancient Roman Jewish melodies and sounds and poems of the Italian Resistance during WWII. Featuring theremin, clarinet, violin, vibraphone, electric guitar, bass and drums, the rocktinged chamber ensemble also brings along Italian writer and filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini and poet Alfonso Gatto to help tell this story of defiance while celebrating the old-world sounds, which are churned here into a sonic landscape like none other. Beautiful, haunting, personal and deeply moving. Bella Ciao also includes guests Dawn McCarthy and Dan Coates. For fans of the legendary Tzadik label, world music or something new (yet old). — Jeff Schwachter

repare yourself for 30,000 square feet of pure terror. New Jersey’s newest and largest haunted attraction, The Fear Factory, is a one-of-a kind attraction rivaling any found at major theme parks nationwide. The Fear Factory is located behind the Hamilton Mall in Mays Landing and features on-site attractions that include the “Mayhem Manor” and the “Kill Grille Truck Stop” — ominous nicknames forged by the locals for two actual, oncethriving local businesses owned by Ed and Emma Mays. Over time the manor, truck stop and adjoining swampfronted cabins slipped into disrepair and abandonment, and peculiar things began occurring there according to local folklore. Many dark, disturbing secrets lurk there, and the Fear Factory recreates these abominations with frightening reality. This ain’t your daddy’s old haunted house. Are you curious enough, or perhaps foolish enough, to investigate this spine-chilling dwelling of supernatural dread, terror and abomination? More chilling details can be found at thefearfactorynj.com or on Facebook (TheFearFactoryNJ). Tickets are $15 for each attraction or $26 for both. Group rates, seasonal passes and a private VIP “speed pass” to the Fear Factory are also available. Hours are 6-10pm Thursdays and Sundays, and 6pm-midnight Fridays and Saturdays through October. The Fear Factory’s final weekend of the year will be Friday and Saturday, Nov. 1-2. Don’t say you haven’t been warned!

Bette Davis Tries By Jerry Blavat • feedback@acweekly.com
Miss Davis, actress and activist
O
nce again, greetings and salutations. Well, the weather has finally made it into the fall. But things are still hot with the Geator and the Geator Gold guys and gals, with our one-nighters and our new Wednesday night Live at 5 broadcast from the Valley Forge Casino, which can be heard locally on KOOL 98 along with our regular weekday broadcasts from 7-9pm. And it’s amazing how popular our show “The Geator, Frank, and Friends” is on WOND News Talk Radio every Sunday from noon to 2pm, following local radio legend Jim MacMillan’s “Weekend Journal.” Never realized how many young people are really into that show and the music from the “Rat Pack” era. Folks especially love the mixes
that we do of the early years of Frank on Columbia, his legendary Capitol recordings, and then the remakes and later hits he did on Reprise. Our next show at the Kimmel Center, which many of you have been asking about, is on target. The date is Jan. 25 and the lineup so far includes Bobby Rydell, Jay Black, Gary U.S. Bonds, Pat Upton of the Spiral Starecase — and waiting for confirmation from Mel Carter. Also, by the time you read our next column, I’ll be ready to take to the high seas for our Malt Shop Memories Cruise, which incidentally is sold out — tickets are already going fast for 2014. For more info go to maltshopcruise.com. And that said, now let’s ask the Geator. I once read that Bette Davis was president of the Motion Picture Academy for two months and then resigned. I’ve looked all over for more details about why she resigned and could find nothing. Only one old article mentioned she was forced to resign. Do you know anything more? — Valerie P., Hammonton
Miss Davis was quite the activist and in 1941 proposed that the Academy’s annual dinner that year be a benefit for war relief, with the Oscars made out of wood to save metal, but her ideas were rejected. Compounding this was the fact that she was at war with Warner Brothers over her contract, and they as a major studio supported the Academy. So I think they may have put pressure on the Academy to get rid of her. Do you recall a song recorded by Frankie Valli called “Paris is Burning”? I love that recording and it is not one of his most famous hit songs. — Mel Berman, Bucks County, Pa. Just got off the phone with Frankie, and the song you’re thinking of is called “Passion for Paris,” which he recorded for an album
he did with Mike Curb during the disco era called Heaven Above Me. I’m going to try to get the album and play it for my listeners. If anyone knows the story behind the Sapphires (“Who Do You Love”) I know it’s you, Jerry Blavat. I know Kenny Gamble arranged the vocals for the group. — Benjamin Jacob Flucas, Boston, Mass. The Sapphires were a very fine group made up of Carol Jackson, George Gainer and Joe Livingston. They did a lot of backup work for many of the Philly artists, but never managed to hit it big as primary artists. Their biggest song, “Who Do You Love,” was produced by Kenny Gamble, co-written by Jerry Ross and released on Swan. Their second hit, “Got to Have Your Love,” was produced locally but because of the success of “Who Do You Love,” ABC Paramount picked up the master and ran with it, moving the group to New York and the Brill Building. Unfortunately, those were their only two major recordings, and they broke up after their contract with ABC Paramount expired in 1966. n
JERRY BLAVAT Got a question for Jerry? Send it to AskTheGeator@acweekly.com or Geator Gold Radio, 626 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106. For more info on Jerry’s appearances, go to www.geator.net — and keep on rocking, ’cause you only rock once!

The innovative series, during which Seinfeld picks up his guest and chats casually over a cup of java with them, was produced for Sony’s Crackle company, a digital network that features a variety of streaming distinctive, artistic venue Since 2008 video programs and segments. Ever since he voluntarily ended his eponymous series in 1998 while it was still pulling Top 10 ratings, Seinfeld, 59, has resisted the lure of big money to return to episodic network television. not a whole lot of show prep, if any. “I like the stuff that just comes up because I’m really curious,” he explained. “David Letterman loved that I asked Alec Baldwin, ‘Who do you think has worked harder to get where we are?’ Now, if you can imagine that conversation happening on a talk show in front of an audience, it stops right there. All of a sudden there’s a ‘Whoa!’ And I don’t want to deal with that. I felt like the talk show needs its next iteration, and I don’t know if this was it. This was a personal experiment of mine. Talk shows as we know them are performances, and so I wanted to try to do one without an audience, clips and something to promote.” Seinfeld, who brings his stand-up act to Borgata’s Event Center on Saturday (Oct. 19), acknowledged that his Internet show basically evolved out of the game showpanel series The Marriage Ref, which ran for 19 episodes over two seasons before it was canceled by NBC in 2011. Seinfeld produced the show and made occasional appearances. “I made Comedians in Cars out of that show. If you look at it, you’ll see what I was going for on that show,” he said. “I think it’s interesting to hear people talk about something that’s powerful and interesting to them out of the box. But I couldn’t make it happen. One of the big things I realized was that the audience is stopping these people from talking. The other thing I realized is that I was much more interested in comedians than I was in a lot of other people whom I thought I was interested in. So, in some ways, I took that pot, smashed it on the ground, took four or five pieces and re-glued them into another thing.” If nothing else, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee demonstrates Seinfeld’s willingness to let someone else get the big laughs. He doesn’t feel the need to play can-you-top this with his guests or prove that he’s the funniest guy in the car. Before committing to the Internet series, Seinfeld said he’d been asked to host the Academy Awards. On the Baldwin episode of Comedians in Cars, Baldwin even joked to Seinfeld about the potential Oscar gig. “I do get asked [to host the Oscars]. To tell you the truth, I was at a point where I was saying, ‘This is the year I’m either going to host the Oscars or I’m going to try and make a show on the Internet,’” he said “I can’t really give you the [specifics] of what happened there, but something happened, politically, and I said, ‘OK, then I’m going to do the Internet thing.’ And now that door has kind of closed behind me.” n

hen most people in the area hear the three letters, MGK, they think of the classic rock station out of Philadelphia. Well, there’s another MGK out there — Machine Gun Kelly is making a name for himself and he owns the acronym MGK. The Cleveland-bred rapper, who will perform Friday (Oct. 18) at the House of Blues at Showboat in Atlantic City, is rap’s newest bad boy. MGK — aka Richard Colson Baker — has nearly as

many tattoos as he has clever raps and is cut out for a larger-than-life future. “I’m not about the hype,” Baker tells Atlantic City Weekly. “I’m about doing the best I can.” Part of the MGK appeal is that he writes from the heart. His deep, dark tunes come from personal experiences. “I write first person stuff,” Baker says. “I have so much to write about. I’ve experienced so much.” Baker, 23, has had to bounce back from chemical issues. “I’ve had addiction problems,” Baker says. “I’m not going to hide that. It’s been real stuff that I’ve survived. I’m not a hero. A lot of people go through it. I just have the chance to write about it.” Lace Up, MGK’s incendiary debut disc, which dropped in 2012, is a showcase for the most intriguing rapper since Eminem. Baker lives up to his nickname by delivering rapid-fire raps. “Wild Boy,” “Save Me” and “Edge of Destruction” are intense urban salvos as MGK successfully exploits his rough upbringing. There’s authenticity and urgency to his music. “I’m not making stuff up,” Baker says. “It’s all there.” MGK is a major player. No wonder Interscope signed him. His potential is vast and he’s inventive, provocative and smart. He’s also young. “I think the sky is the limit for me,” Baker says. “I have so much that’s going to hit people in the future. I feel like I’ve only scraped the surface.” A number of guests appear throughout Lace Up, including Wacka Flocka Flame, Lil Jon, DMX, Young Jeezy and Twista. It’s good to have friends. Obviously Baker has been embraced by the competitive hip-hop community. He’s also scored hardware from MTV. “It was so cool to win the [2011] breakout artist award,” Baker says. “That was something special.” It also helps having P. Diddy as a mentor. “That’s huge,” Baker says. “He keeps me in line. He knows what he’s talking about. I try to listen when he says things to me. The guy is sharp.” Much like the lionized entrepeneur, Baker hopes to be around for a long time. “I want to do this for years,” Baker says. “I’ve only just gotten started and things are going really good. I want to still be doing this many years from now. I don’t want to get too ahead of myself, but I want longevity.” ■

Margaritaville is dedicating Thursday evenings in October to the locals with Sharktoberfest and the Coast is Clear! party. By Ray Schweibert • feedback@acweekly.com
T
here’s a Jimmy Buffett song called “When the Coast is Clear” that includes the lyrics “The air is turnin’ cool, the kids are back in school, the tourist traps are empty, vacancy abounds, almost like it used to be, before the circus came to town.” Those who reside year-round in a resort town like Atlantic City will likely know right off what the song alludes to — a sense of peace and tranquility that returns to an area after the frenzied pitch of summer has subsided. In celebration of that tranquility, and in part as a gesture of thanks to all the locals who helped make the newest Margaritaville/ LandShark Bar & Grill property (and the only one of many worldwide sited directly on a beach) the smashing success it was in its first summer, Resorts is hosting the “Coast is Clear!” party at LandShark (5-7pm) andSharktoberfest (9pm-1am) every Thursday
in October. Sharktoberfest features live party bands from 9pm — including a South Jersey foursome called The Amberlamps Oct. 17, and a North Jersey female-fronted quintet called Under Pressure Oct. 24 and 31 — in the 5 O’Clock Somewhere Bar, plus half-off drink specials on the Shark Bite (Margaritaville Dark Rum, orange juice, sour mix and a float of grenadine) and Fins 2 the Left. “Fins 2 the Left is a customer favorite,” says Kyle Collins, director of marketing for the Orlando, Florida-based Margaritaville
Hospitality Group. “It’s made with Margaritaville Silver Tequila, Blue Curacao and our special margarita mix poured over top of a Who’s To Blame margarita [Margaritaville Gold Tequila, triple sec and a homemade margarita blend]. If guests are in the mood for a rum drink, we suggest our Euphoria Daiquiris made with Conch Republic Light Rum and any flavor Island Oasis all-natural fruit mix — strawberry, raspberry, mango, banana, pina colada or wildberry.” Who’s To Blame Margaritas and Euphoria Daiquiris are $5 during Thursday’s Coast is Clear! parties, and all well drinks made with vodka, rum or gin are just $3. There are also 14-ounce drafts and house wines for $4, and both events will be doing giveaways of Margaritaville merchandise and dining certificates. Performing Oct. 17 and Oct. 24 at LandShark is the South Jersey-based band Five Times Famous, heralded as five troubadours who “bring a bombastic mix of party anthems from yesterday and today, with a set list as wide and diverse as the day is long.” “The Coast is Clear! party is not unique to the Atlantic City market, but we only do it in a handful of our coastal locations like in Panama City Beach [Florida] and Myrtle Beach [South Carolina],” says Collins. “It’s really a party to thank and give back to the locals who supported Margaritaville, and it’s

based on Jimmy’s song ‘When the Coast is Clear’ that basically says ‘Hey look, all the tourists have gone, it’s time for the locals to come down, enjoy the clear sandy beaches, take back your favorite seat at the bar, relax and reclaim a sense of normalcy.’ “All of our Margaritavilles try to capture that whole paradise theme, and the design elements all do nods to local landmarks depending on the location. In the Atlantic City LandShark Bar and Grill there are a lot of tie-ins to things like the area’s surfing culture as well as photos and memorabilia of Atlantic City’s storied past. “We’re going primarily for that ‘escape to paradise’ feel, and even though you will be in Atlantic City [during the colder months], we’re hoping the consumer can be taken away to a tropical oasis and escape your everyday concerns,” says Collins. “If that’s the case — if you can get that feeling with a tropical drink in your hand and some soothing beach music playing in the background — then we’ve accomplished our goal.” ■ LandShark Coast is Clear! Simply Seafood at New Shuckers
Shuckers Bar & Grille 9403 Ventnor Ave., Margate
Complementing their exceptional Italian restaurant and low-key sandwich shop, John and Joanne Liccio are bringing Margate a casual seafood establishment.

ohnny Liccio is a rather busy guy these days. Already running a pair of successful Margate eateries — an eponymous full-service restaurant and an authentic south Philly style corner sandwich stand — along with wife, Joanne, the duo now counts the days until a third complementary food enterprise joins their family’s portfolio. That property, formerly Fedeli’s Italian restaurant at 9403 Ventnor Ave. in Margate, expects to debut by Halloween. Shuckers Bar and Grille, the name chosen, pretty much sums up the concept too. In case that shellfish-related verbiage was lost on you, Liccio elaborates. “What I wanted was a very casual beach bar,” he says. “Something the island needs — a seashore seafood restaurant.” The physical space, completely redone in the last three months, now offers a comfy, beachy atmosphere. Soft tones of pale white and pastel blue within soothe, while a rugged gray slate exterior face seems ideally suited for these often-harsh environs. Appropriately enough, Shuckers menu will focus on raw bar products — oysters, clams, shrimp and crab — along with a variety of other seafood. It will also feature a large blackboard directory of food additions and unique brews at the rear of the central bar. “I want people to come off the beach with sand on their toes, have a draught beer and eat whatever they want, all day long,” he says. Included will be traditional local standards like steamed clams and sautéed mussels, along with a house signature, the Jersey shore lobster bake, loaded with red bliss potatoes, corn, shrimp, clams and lob-

Another of his planned specialties is French Dip, a classic American sandwich crafted from prime rib and served simply with horseradish and au jus. With seating for close to 100 patrons, Shuckers encourages walk-ins. “No reservations, first-come, first-served,” says Liccio. Native to south Philly, Liccio was formally trained as a baker and pastry chef prior to opening his first local business at 7303 Ventnor Ave. in 2005. He describes the initial venture run by himself, Joanne
and just one server as having been an ice cream parlor that morphed into a popular breakfast and lunch spot. At customer request — specifically a party of 10 desirous of a holiday repast — Johnny’s Café began serving dinners prior to moving to its current location a few miles south in December 2008. Since that time the Liccios built a solid reputation at the virtual epicenter of one of southern New Jersey’s most competitive and discerning food markets. Expanded earlier this year, Johnny’s Café now offers multiple spacious dining areas, wide, white

arching banquettes and two bars with seating for 190 patrons. Liccio heaps praise upon his wife, responsible for front-of-the-house duties, as the person most responsible for that growth. An industry veteran with a special emphasis on bar business, Joanne Liccio’s background has included working within some of the best nightclubs in Philly. Other key personnel at Johnny’s — all trained by Joanne — are day manager Marisa Lucchetti, night manager Frankie Marciano, and bar manager Bobby Bechtal. To hear John Liccio talk of how Shuckers came to be is like getting a glimpse of what will someday become the stuff of local restaurant lore. Longtime owner/operator Dan Fedeli, after an unsuccessful post-Sandy reopen, phoned him last Christmas Eve and posed a very direct question. “Are you ready to buy my restaurant?” The pair quickly “came to a nice agreement,” according to Liccio, and contract work on the building’s conversion began by late summer. Obtaining the coveted middle property on this well-heeled street allowed the connection of all three of their buildings, with the objective, says Liccio, “to make this block into its own little city.” A quick tour of their now massive rear delivery area confirms the logic of that plan. A loading dock, several storage facilities and a walk-in cooler now serve multiple purposes, simultaneously reducing street traffic and noise on Ventnor Avenue. On the island where Monopoly was born, it appears John and Joanne Liccio now possess all the requisite pieces to assemble their very own dining empire. ■

Blues Skies for Gary Clark Jr. After years of flying under the radar, the young blues player’s career is really taking off By Ed Condran • feedback@acweekly.com
T
Clark, 29, paid tribute to inductee Albert King by rendering a smoldering cover of “Born Under a Bad Sign.” It’s no surprise to see Clark rise in the ranks. He’s been a part of a number of South By Southwest music festivals, where he earned raves. “I remember seeing the Strokes at South By early on and so many other big acts that were under the radar,” Clark tells Atlantic City Weekly. “South By is where you get noticed.” The same can be said for Austin. The town’s most venerable blues club, Antones, featured Clark, when he was just 15 years old. “Cliff Antone put me on stage with James Cotton, Mojo Buford, Calvin ‘Fuzz’ Jones and George Rains,” Clark recalls. “They wondered if the kid could hang.” Clark, who will perform Saturday, Oct. 19, in Atlantic City at the Borgata, proved himself and scored a deal with Warner Brothers two years ago.

“A lot of great blues guys had to work hard for everything they ever got. I was never afraid of working for it.”
ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY • OCTOBER 17 - 23, 2013
he blues has had, well, the blues when it comes to attention over recent years. The revered music genre needed a jolt from a 20-something axe-slinger and it received just that when Gary Clark Jr. burst onto the scene. Rolling Stone, which doesn’t cover much blues, published a glowing review with RS scribe Will Hermes asking: “When was the last time a young blues guitarist blew your mind?” when referring to Clark. It’s difficult not to get revved up when experiencing the mind-bending play of Clark. The masses recently had the chance to catch him as his performance was one of the highlights of last spring’s Rock And Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony as well as the In Performance at The White House: Red, White and Blues concert, which aired on PBS this past February, featuring Clark, Mick Jagger, B.B. King, Shemekia Copeland, Trombone Shorty and Keb’ Mo’ — as well as President Barack Obama singing on the blues classic “Sweet Home Chicago.” Rush and Public Enemy, who were inducted, performed on a Hall of Fame level. The former still packs a considerable punch as it delivers its familiar wall of sound. PE reminded fans of how powerful and dangerous it was a quarter century ago.
“To sign with a label like that was a thrill for me,” Clark says. “I’ve always loved music and then I have the opportunity to make it. My first love was the Jackson Five and I remember the ‘Bad’ tour in 1988. I was only about four, but I thought the guitar was awesome. It never got out of my system.” Black and Blu, Clark’s much anticipated Warner Brothers debut — after releasing four indie albums — is full of passionate, intense blues-rock. Clark doesn’t re-invent the wheel on the 2013 release, but he’s strong in the studio. The way to best experience Clark, however, is onstage. Clark has delivered some incendiary performances, particularly in his hometown. “Playing live I think I have the most fun,” Clark says. “That’s where I want to be.” But Clark has another hometown these days, New York City, the rare times he’s there. “I’m on the road so much,” Clark says. He’s spreading the word of such blues legends as Leadbelly and Otis Rush; such late icons have heavily influenced Clark. “I spent so much time listening to the [acoustic] music of Leadbelly and so many of these other players, who don’t get the recognition they deserve. I love the rhythm of their music. There really is nothing like it. Listen to what Albert King accomplished. It really is amazing. When you listen to stuff like ‘Born Under a Bad Sign,’ it just floors you. The groove and the intensity [are] just incredible. I couldn’t avoid that. I had to listen to that and it made an impact on me.” Nothing has changed for Clark since he left the independent world for a major label. “The thing that’s great is that they just let me do what I want to do,” Clark says. “They trust me and that’s an important thing. I need to have that autonomy. They’ve been incredibly supportive. They know there is a market for blues. They respect the blues there [at Warner Bros.] — I’m in an ideal situation.” Clark certainly worked for his current success — including a mind-blowing performance at the Metallica Orion Music + More Festival, held at Bader Field in Atlantic City in June 2012. Clark is self taught and worked in clubs for a decade before getting his break. “I think it’s a good thing to have to work for it as opposed to getting somewhere really early in your career,” Clark says. “I appreciate everything. A lot of great blues guys had to work hard for everything they ever got. I was never afraid of working for it.” ■

EVENT INFO have ever been on and I hated that [aspect of it], but looking back now I really cherish the opportunity I had with AGT.” Often asked about how much practice it takes to stay sharp in his act, Blaque admits that practice is really only essential when he is developing something new in his act. “Shooting a crossbow is like a musician paying a guitar. At first I practiced all the time, day and night but once you get it, you’ve got it. After eight years, it is all muscle memory.”
Variety With Latin Twist Revel continues its plan to bring classic casino fare to The Social By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com

s part of its “Gambler’s Welcome” plan to bring more people through the doors of Revel, the casino is continuing its strategy of bringing classic casino style shows to its casino floor showroom The Social. Before the current change in its entertainment direction, the Social was utilized more as a nightclub space with a bands/DJs format and a Thursday night comedy showcase. The comics are still on tap Thursdays, but the band format has been replaced with typical casino revue fare. First up in the summer was the Cirque Dreams Revealed show alternating with illusionist/mentalist Wayne Hoffman’s Mind Candy. Now the Social is hosting The Latin Quarter Show, a variety show with Latin accents featuring showgirls and male dancers, comedian Joey Vega, balance artist Jose Mejias, ballroom dance couple Dmitry and Darina, Los Huincas Gauchos and crossbow specialist
Ben Blaque. Fans of America’s Got Talent will recognize Ben Blaque from his appearance on the realty series in 2012, where Howard Stern was a big fan of his impressive skills. Although Blaque will tell you his interest in crossbows has been cultivated for eight years, it doesn’t hurt that the crossbow (and archery in general) is hot lately thanks to TV and films featuring the weapon like Arrow, The Walking Dead, Revolution and The Hunger Games. Blaque explains that when it was first suggested he learn to shoot a crossbow, “I thought it was a bit too Robin Hood-ie, Men In Tights, and I wasn’t that interested, but then I decided if I was going to do it, it would be my way. I wanted it to be my style, really cool with rock music and more of a modern look.” He explains that he was working on the crew of the Kirby VanBurch Magic Show in
Branson, Mo. and wanted to be a magician but knew he couldn’t afford all the props he needed. VanBurch had a crossbow and encouraged him to develop an act that could get him bookings on variety shows and a regular performing spot in VanBurch’s show. When told he should learn how to shoot an arrow off his head, Blaque’s reaction was, “Hell no. I don’t want to do that” but he did research, and started falling in love with the idea. As he became more proficient, he got excited about “Making the show bigger and better, more scary, more awesome and dangerous.” That increased awesome factor earned Blaque a spot on Season Seven of America’s Got Talent. “It was quite an experience,” says Blaque. At times I really enjoyed it and it was like summer camp. I made so many friends there. But it was hard too. There was more ‘hurry up and wait’ than any production I

Review: ‘The Latin Quarter Show’
This musical revue/variety show harks back to the days when many casinos in Atlantic City had musical revues, especially in the off-season when the major headline entertainment was taking the fall or winter off. Naturally for this theme, the dance numbers have a Latin flair, including some flamenco action. Comic Joey Vega manages to squeeze a few laughs out of being married and divorced and the current state of airline travel in between the variety acts. Those variety acts include balance artist Jose Mejias, whose most impressive trick is balancing a tray of glasses on a dagger balanced on a sword. The dancing duo of Dmitry and Darina has skills comparable to the professional dancers on Dancing With the Stars. As noted in the interview, Ben Blaque presents an amazing demonstration of crossbow skill, including some of it blindfolded, as well as the signature trick of shooting an apple off his head that was so popular on America’s Got Talent. The featured act is Los Huincas Gauchos, two performers who perform on drums and then whip their boleadora (wooden balls on a strap) at 90 miles an hour as the audience cheers them on. ■ see more online @

EVENT INFO these people. What about Bob Dylan? Of course, he’s much earlier, but yes. I think that I was fascinated from the get-go by Bob’s poetry. His lyrics are poems. They embody elements of some of the great literate poets of all time like Dylan Thomas and T.S. Eliot. To me, I was always trying to figure out what he was trying to tell me. I feel that he opened a gate between pop music and literature.

Songwriter Jimmy Webb, one of the greatest composers and lyricists of our time, performs rare solo show at Stockton’s Performing Arts Center. By Jeff Schwachter • feedback@acweekly.com

OCTOBER 17 - 23, 2013 • ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY
B
y the time Jimmy Webb reached the Long Island Expressway, en route to his home on Long Island on a dark and stormy Monday in early October, traffic was at a standstill. “I guess they’re trying to drop a tornado or something on us right now,” Webb said via cell phone from the passenger seat. “We’re fine, it’s just [the] traffic doesn’t move here.” Webb, 67, who performs a solo show (just him and a concert grand piano) at the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey’s Performing Arts Center on Saturday, Oct. 19, 7:30pm, is best known as the songwriter who started out writing professionally for Motown, and then went on to write several smash hits for singers ranging from Glen Campbell and Johnny Rivers to the 5th Dimension and Donna Summers. Webb’s songs, such as “By the Time I Get to Phoenix,” “Wichita Lineman,” “Galveston,” “MacArthur Park” and “Didn’t We,” solidified his place early on among the best songwriters of his generation. Unlike other songwriters during the 1960s and ’70s, who were more known as singersongwriters (Bob Dylan, Lennon-McCartney, Jagger-Richards, et al.), Webb had enormous success as a professional songwriter, recording often and performing live, but not with the same success as his songwriting/composing career, which is chronicled on his last two albums, Just Across the River (2010) and Still Within the Sound of My Voice (2013). Both of these Nashville recordings feature guests such as Billy Joel, Lucinda Williams, Vince Gill, Graham Nash and David Crosby, Art Garfunkel, Lyle Lovett, Mark Knopfler and many others dueting with Webb on his greatest songs. As a young boy growing up in Oklahoma, Webb started performing piano in church and dreaming about being a songwriter. By the time he was 17, Webb headed for Los Angeles. “If someone asked me what I did for a living,” he says, “I told them I was a songwriter.”

Webb, while stuck in traffic on the LIE, spoke to Atlantic City Weekly. When did you start writing songs? I was probably about 13 or 14 years old. My father was a minister in Oklahoma City. I started in the church improvising ... for services. I went on the road a bit with my dad. He was an evangelist and very proud of my abilities. As an outgrowth of that improvisa-
In the liner notes to Just Across the River you write that you prayed to have Glen Campbell sing one of your songs. The first record I ever bought, I borrowed money from my father. He loaned me a dollar and a half and he let me use the car and I was only 14. We lived way out in the country. He let me drive 25-30 miles out to where there was a record store. I bought this song called “Turn Around, Look At Me.” I had
“I bought this song called ‘Turn Around, Look at Me,’ by Glen Campbell. I had heard it out in the wheat field on a transistor radio. I brought it home and wore it out until it was slick.” tion, sometimes you’re just playing music as they pass that plate and sometimes it takes a long time to pass that plate. I learned how to play “Rock of Ages” 15 different ways. During that process, I discovered I could write my own tunes.
heard it out in the wheat field on a transistor radio. I brought it home and wore it out until it was slick. So I used to pray that I was a songwriter and got to meet someone like Glen Campbell. It’s kind of freaky because he [went on to sing] so many of my songs.
This was in the early 1960s? Yeah. I was a staff writer at Motown in 1965. I wrote 45 songs at Motown. I got a song cut on a Supremes Christmas album, which was called “My Christmas Tree.” That was not the greatest song I’ve ever written or the best Christmas song ever written by anybody, but it was the Supremes! I also worked with Billy Eckstine there. I had a couple of sessions with him. ... I called it the Harvard for songwriters because Motown could really teach you how to write a hit song with a beginning, middle and end [and] with a message. It was Motown West in California. I remember the first time I heard “My Girl.” I said, well, if I ever heard a hit, that’s it. I was in a good place. It was a cocoon atmosphere. There was a tremendous demand for music. There were opportunities. It was there if you were prepared. When I was 13 I would pray to be a songwriter. I can never remember wanting to be anything else except for maybe a jet pilot.
Who are some of your favorite songwriters, contemporaries of yours? Some of the writers who were idols of mine were Burt Bacharach, Hal David, Lamont Dozier and Brian Holland. I was crazy about The Beatles. Their records aside, I thought John, Paul and George were great songwriters. They gave me a tremendous push to get moving. I give them a lot of credit for building a fire under me and achieving competitiveness with them. Sgt. Pepper had a lot of affect on me. I had been infected and affected by The Beach Boys’ “God Only Knows” and “The Warmth of the Sun.” This is gorgeous stuff. I found myself being influenced by classical musical. I was [also] lucky enough to meet Joni Mitchell … and she really helped me change the approach to the way I write: I want to say something that’s inside that wants to come out, and she taught me that. I’ve always loved Randy Newman and Warren Zevon. I can’t imagine life without
In 1965, when “Like a Rolling Stone” was one of the hits on the charts, was that a mindblowing thing for a songwriter, as the song was six minutes long and took up both sides of the 45? The first record I remember being two sides was Stevie Wonder playing “Fingertips.” I wasn’t surprised at anything Dylan did because he was different and on his own track. One of the things I was into was long songs and I still am. Even today, for one of my songs to go four or five minutes, that’s not a big deal. Commercially, it wasn’t a good decision on my part. It was frowned on at Motown. They wanted two minutes and 40 seconds and that’s it. I thought that it was an epic song. It was too big for one side of the record, but there were some great verses. Do you still write regularly? I keep a notebook and I’m working on the piano all the time. I have a vision that I would like to write a new album of original songs because I really feel like I’ve been on the nostalgia thing long enough. These last two albums we’ve worked the catalog and had a lot of guest songs, but I’m so proud of every track on those two records. There has been talk of a third Nashville album. Did the artists pick the songs they would sing with you on the past two albums? Almost unilaterally. There were a couple of times when we were thinking of songs for say David Crosby and Graham Nash and I said I think it’s this one, what do you think? And they’d love it. If you don’t want to sing it, we don’t want you to. “The Moon’s a Harsh Mistress” is a song that Joe Cocker recorded already, but we asked if he wanted to do it again. He’s been on the road for seven weeks and came in the next morning and turned in a great vocal performance. There were a lot of great moments. And I think you’ve captured a lot of them on the record. Well, thank you very much. By the end of our interview, traffic started to move on the LIE. “It’s actually picked up a little bit,” Webb said. ■ see more online @

to worry about. Soon afterward Phillips is negotiating with the pirate leader Muse (Barkhad Amdi), who thinks he has hit the jackpot hijacking an American ship. Phillips tries to get him to be satisfied with the $30,000 in the safe, but Muse is looking for millions and decides that holding Phillips for ransom will earn him his payday. Another aspect of the film that is floated up on screen is that these Somalis are being forced into piracy because warlords control their villages and survival is only possible by stealing from the rich ships. When Phillips asks Muse if piracy and fishing are really his only job options, I was on the captain’s side of the argument, although one suspects the filmmaker wants us to feel sympathy for their plight. It is the brilliance of Hanks that finally injects some compassion and drama into the storytelling. Hanks has a scene where all the tension and fear his character has endured for days comes out in an attack of post-traumatic stress that is astonishing and will likely earn Hanks yet another Academy Award nomination. Hanks’ performance is the anchor that keeps the dull bits from overwhelming Captain Phillips. n

T
om Hanks has spent his career making us believe in the strength of the ordinary man. His magic in elevating the ordinary to the extraordinary is a much-needed skill in Captain Phillips, directed by Paul Greengrass. Greengrass is a director who allows his imagination to roam free when he is in fiction mode such as with The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum. However, when he is asked to recreate a true life incident such as United 93, his account of the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania on 9/11, and now Captain Phillips, the story of the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the American cargo ship the Maersk Alabama, he sticks to the facts in a way that sometimes drains the energy out of the filmmaking. When I see a film like Captain Phillips I think about the famous Hitchcock quote that, “Drama is life with all the dull bits cut out.” There are plenty of dull bits in Captain Phillips as we learn how boring life is on a cargo ship before the pirates arrive. Since cargo ships were not allowed to have weapons onboard in 2009, these huge ships were in fact vulnerable to armed men in skiffs, with only water hoses as their protection. When Captain Richard Phillips (Hanks) sees that his ship might be boarded, he has to fight the perception during his call for help that he has nothing to worry about. It seems the emergency personnel on the other end of his SOS are confident that since an American ship has not been hijacked in 200 years that he has nothing
