A plethora of women willing to take their shirts off was not what local artist Kevin McCarty was anticipating when he was approached to participate in an art show benefiting breast cancer. In the spirit of October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, McCarty devised a project called #ShareYours @CureThem in hopes to lend inspiration and promote awareness for women and the disease. The donation campaign will benefit survivor Mary Guido of Margate as she currently undergoes treatment battling breast cancer. Initially, McCarty’s concept called for 16 women to be photographed, a pink censor bar the only thing covering their topless tatas. However, the women of the community have far surpassed McCarty’s expectations by reaching out to be a part of the venture in anyway possible. The campaign has “taken on a life of its own” he says, as local women have continually been “asking for this to be something bigger than we originally planned.” Featuring women ranging from ages 20 to upwards of 60, the print supports the campaign tagline that “it has no preference,” breast cancer can affect anyone regardless of age or race. The fundraising project will launch online Friday, Oct. 19, at Facebook.com/CureThem and on Instagram @CureThem, where there will be links to campaign prints available for purchase. By launching the campaign online, McCarty hopes to give it “a format to have wings, and who knows, maybe take flight and save a life one day.” All proceeds raised will go toward Mary Guido’s Making Strides Cancer Walk benefit. McCarty sums up his hope for the project as such: “that girls will be inspired by the campaign, feel more comfortable about being checked, spread the word that anyone can get it and stress the importance that early detection really can save a life.” — Casey Harper

Revel’s Oktober‘feast’ Celebrates the Season

Tis the season to be drinking seasonal beers and enjoying hearty fare, and Revel is on board with its Oktoberfeast 2012 scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 19-21. Revel’s “BierGarden in the SkyGarden” will feature lit-up beer tents, barrel and bench seating, live music and a unique selection of beers, wines and ciders. There will also be authentic German fare like streusel, pretzels, potato salads and brats. The weekend will continue with seasonal feasting menus and other festivities throughout the resort. Oktoberfeast will happen Saturday from 2-9pm and Sunday from 11am-5pm, and will be open to resort and non-resort guests. Revel will be also offering a Brewhaus Cocktail Party on Friday from 6-8pm and Saturday from 5-7pm in the O2 Lounge and Lobby for resort guests only. This event will feature a live band, traditional German brews and complimentary cocktails for the first hour. Resort guests will also be invited to an Oktoberfeast Nightcap on Friday and Saturday at the O2 Lounge from 11am-1am both nights. It will feature a live acoustic guitarist and signature German drinks. Oktoberfeast tickets are $40 for eight food-and-drink tickets in advance, or $48 for eight tickets the day of the event. Revel’s curated collection of outstanding chefs will also be offering special fall menus available during the event. Additionally, check out Oktoberfest at Revel’s Mussel Bar on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 20-21, featuring $16 beer flights (four six-ounce pours of Antigoon, Pumking, Hacker-Pschorr and Golden Carolus Easter Ale), and plenty of authentic German fare. — Ray Schweibert

When rumors spread that Detroit musician Rodriguez had comitted suicide, setting himself on fire onstage, most of his fans — the majority of whom are from South Africa — wrote the singer-songwriter off as dead. Swedish filmmaker Malik Bendjelloul, while in South Africa looking for a film to make, discovered that although both of Rodriguez’s U.S. releases (Cold Fact, 1970; Coming from Reality; 1971) failed commercially, in South Africa he was revered as a superstar. The acclaimed 2012 film Searching for Sugar Man not only brings Rodriguez’s hard-life journey to mass audiences, but its director brings one of rock’s most obscure and intersting characters back from the dead. In fact, Bendjelloul tracked down Rodriguez after all these years for the film, the soundtrack of which contains some of the highlights from the musician’s early 1970s albums, both of which have been re-released. Rodriguez’s politically-charged songs spoke to the Aparthied-era South Africans. Now, they have a chance to speak to the world. — Jeff Schwachter

NIGHTLIFE

Ducktown Tavern’s Brian Ireland

By Ray Schweibert

Ireland is a Ducktown bartender and lifelong Ventnor resident who, at age 26, can already claim eight years as a professional mixologist and amateur advice dispenser. His service industry career started as a busboy turned waiter at the Wonder Bar — an Albany Avenue, Atlantic City mainstay — who was promoted to bartender at age 18. Atlantic City Weekly spoke to Ireland on a recent weekday at the Ducktown.

TAFF MEMBERS OF A LITTLE

town in Cape May have reported several paranormal events that have left their hair standing on end. Perhaps it’s not a coincidence that the town is called Cold Springs. Ghost-One Paranormal Group visited Historic Cold Springs Village (HCSV) on Saturday, Oct. 13, and took a group of 50 people through five haunted buildings. Dave Baldo, founder of Ghost-One, says from what they found he believes Cold Springs to be haunted. He reported a shadowy figure seen by four people during a pre-investigation a few weeks prior. According to Kate Devaney, deputy director of public relations and programming at HCSV, different spirits have been spotted by different people around town, with most sightings reported at the Cox Hall Cottage, the Spice Leaming House, the Dennisville Inn, and the Corson-Hand House. Shirley Stephanovich, a teacher at the Marshallville School, says the ghost of a Native American Indian is a common sight around town. Several visitors and staff have seen him. “One gentleman was visiting the on-site memorial,” she says. “When he looked up, he saw an Indian standing there. When the man turned back, the Indian was gone.” Clare Jeuchter, special projects manager at HCSV, has worked at Cold Springs since 1998 and has never seen the Indian, although she has heard about him several times, and believes he must be tied to the land. Jeuchter says she has come in contact several times with a malevolent spirit at the Village Country Store: “One of my lead sales associates was with me when we heard pounding on the porch, and someone muttering and swearing. We thought it was someone on a porch step.” Jeuchter did not pursue the person at the time, but 15 minutes later the commotion continued, she says. “I yelled out to them, ‘Be a man. If you have something to say, come in and say it,’” Jeuchter says, adding that the noise then disappeared. The same event occurred again the following year, on the same day. Staff members who have encountered this spirit believe it to be that of a man who dislikes women. Tammy Patterson, who works in the Spicer Leaming Houser says that her most frightening experience involved the ghost of a little girl. During her fourth year working at Cold Springs, Patterson recalls leaving her building to retrieve water from outside. Upon walking back, she noticed a little girl staring out of a second-story window with her hands tucked under her chin.

Patterson, thinking she had been assigned an apprentice, smiled at the girl, and the girl smiled back. When Patterson went back inside the Spicer Leaming building, she went to the floor where she had seen the girl and nobody was there. “I dropped the water and ran next door,” says Paterson. “My co-worker said, ‘Are you OK? You are white as a ghost!’ And I said, ‘That’s because I just saw one!’” Paterson says she was so frightened that she almost quit her job. Although she has not seen the girl since the event, Patterson says she still feels the little girl’s presence. “She pulls on my clothes,” she says. “She opens and shuts doors, and she rocks in the rocking chair.” The ghost seems to hang out upstairs by a doll bed most frequently, according to Patterson. The next season, a couple that had heard the story asked Patterson to tell them about it. “The man started sobbing,” Patterson recalls. He then revealed that he had donated the doll bed to HCSV. “He told me the doll bed had belonged to his 10-year-old daughter who had died, and that was her favorite toy.” While the ghosts of the little girl, malevolent man, and Native American seem to be the most sighted in town, they are not the only spirits who wander the area. There have also been reports of a short woman in the ice cream parlor who waits with candles for her husband to return, a man at the Dennisville Inn who calls for his “working girl,” and a farmer that disappears behind the tractor in the village. Jeuchter believes there are numerous reasons why spirits could be drawn to the area. “We bring in a lot of old furniture that has been donated to Cold Springs — we are adjacent to the oldest Presbyterian church and cemetery — and of course, they could be tied to the land itself.” “There is a lot of history here,” says Devaney. The 26 buildings that make up HCSV date as far back as 1691, with some built in the early 20th century. “How much is true, how much is made up, who knows?” says Stephanovich. “When people get word of [the stories], and something happens to them they tie it to a ghost. I can’t say I believe or not but I have had experiences here that have made me stop and think.” Baldo says the most important tools are your senses: “There are a million gadgets out there, but you have to keep your eyes and ears open all the time. If you are staring at an EMF meter, you might miss a ghost standing right next to you!” n

“Her most frightening experience involved the ghost of a little girl.”

“This was Resort Ownership Resolutions’ first time participating in the Atlantic City Weekly’s Career & Training Expo. I must admit that I didn’t have my expectations set high enough. Within the first three hours of the Expo I had already exceeded my goals with the amount of quality applicants that I was able to schedule second interviews with. The Expo was laid out well allowing all participants to have maximum exposure. I look forward to the next Expo and expect to be a participant for as long as I continue to have the need to expand my business.”

chew of greens and tomatoes. Once the meal continued with a glorious reinvention of the classic Florentine summer salad called panzanella. Generally revered as a simple recipe to utilize leftover bread with tomatoes and onions, executive chef Rob Pappas’ resplendent, soaring take stretched to include a mix of lettuces, parmigiano-reggiano, artichokes, caper berries, albacore tuna, prosciutto and red onions dressed with olive oil and balsamic. The tuna, formed in the middle like a snowcapped peak, was an ideal portion of quality protein. This salad was so large it made us forget the mild disappointment of not being able to sample any of Pappas’ quartet of sliders

— pork, coal-fired meatball, burger and buffalo chicken — all sold out by 8pm. Which, by inference, means they must be pretty darned good. What we thankfully didn’t miss was another house specialty, coal-fired wings. Offered in Buffalo, hot and honey, Thai sweet chile and garlic herb, we went for the pair with geographical designations. Both were well done, as ordered, removed from heat just as the crisp skin began to blister, rendering the tangy poultry juicy and delicious. Entrees began with an out-of-the-ordinary pasta called short rib ravioli. While that lusty cut of beef has become a modern chef’s darling, it remains rarely utilized

in fillings of this sort. Six large raviolis stuffed with a well-seasoned, smooth mix, proved tender and hearty — just the right thing to close out an autumn day where chilly morning temps dipped below freezing. Making the experience sophisticated was a sauce of seared exotic mushrooms, sun dried tomatoes, Marsala and a hint of cream. Simultaneously sweet and woodsy, this auburn liquid added layers of complexity to the simple, but superior, pasta and beef. My partner’s option, from and extensive list of Italian platters, was eggplant saltimbocca. Traditionally prepared with sautéed veal layered by Prosciutto, sage and mozzarella, the eggplant did an admirable job of standing in. Presented atop wilted spinach and finished with a mushroomtomato demi glace, the eggplant — rather a culinary cipher — had plenty of contrasting playmates to liven up its naturally demure essence. Our only complaint was undercooked slices of Tuscan-style potatoes, which would have benefited greatly from additional time spent roasting. We only sampled one dessert on this busy night, when patrons were still streaming in the door at nearly 10 in the evening. That choice, a nutella mousse, was delivered in a clear coffee mug. Cool and sweet, the chestnut-hued pudding, layered with slices of fresh banana was topped by whipped cream, crushed hazelnuts and an Amaretto-flavored biscotti. In case you were wondering, and not of Italian origin, “bocca” translates as “mouth.” From what we could see during their opening weekend, there is much worth exploring at this bocca. n

UR FIRST OPPORTUNITY TO glimpse the space that would, as of Wednesday, Oct. 10, become Margate’s new Italian eatery Bocca, was early this past summer. At that time, the Ventnor Avenue property most locals recall as the former Sailfish had been stripped down to bare walls and earth. A corner location at North Essex, it was still very much in the incipient moments of a transformation that would ultimately involve more than $1 million in construction. In short, a monumental project. Visiting during their “soft” opening weekend, it appears the investment confidence of Bocca’s partners was indeed well founded. Despite being mobbed with patrons — literally three deep at the lengthy bar — Bocca’s front of the house, and especially the kitchen staff, did a remarkable job. Their juggling act began with handling those overflow crowds. Initially told to expect a 30- to 45-minute wait for a table, we were pleasantly surprised to hear our names called at the 20-minute mark. Seated at a four-top in their main dining area — there is a separate, attached pizzeria — we were already savoring a crisp pie ordered during down time at the bar. Called the “Guido,” it brought a wild ride of ingredients; coal-fire roasted Italian sausage, broccoli rabe, sun-dried tomato, cannellini beans, garlic, and sharp, provolone and mozzarella cheeses. Crisp and well structured, the crust held together despite this cornucopia. Those white Italian beans, the only time we’ve seen them used in pizza, brought a depth of creamy texture that worked wonders against the natural

influence, which includes a prolific use of traditionally sweet items in savory cuisine.

Somers Point’s El Costeño may be the first restaurant venture of owner Paulino “Pablo” Eulogio, but he’s certainly no stranger to the kitchen. Eulogio has been a professional chef in the Atlantic City area since arriving 14 years ago from resort community of Puerto Escondido on the Pacific coast of Mexico. With seating for 30, El Costeño’s an intimate establishment that features a diverse menu of standard favorites and unexpected specialties, such as made-to order, par-cooked “seviche” combining flounder, scallops, calamari and shrimp with lime and orange juices, cilantro, onion and hot sauce. Eulogio’s wife and partner, Delfina Villavicencio, creates homemade tortillas, sauces, desserts and a half-dozen luscious “agua frescas” — naturally refreshing beverages that include flavors of watermelon, cantaloupe, pineapple, tamarind and others. Eulogio describes native foods as being Oaxacan, with a seaside

Opened in late May, El Costeño seems to have gained a nice foothold already. One of the secrets of its sudden success is certainly the concept of small-batch cookery along with an emphasis on spontaneous cuisine. By preparing only limited amounts of certain fairly popular items, like approximately 25 tamales daily, quality control is maintained. The couple would rather sell out of an item when it is fresh and in ideal condition than have anything left at the end of a night/ If you love Mexican, this is the place!

Many Sides of Melissa Singer-songwriter Melissa Etheridge is touring in support of her diverse new album ‘4th Street Feeling’ By Lori Hoffman

M

ELISSA ETHERIDGE’S MUSIC first put her in the spotlight in the late 1980s-early 1990s with such signature songs as “Bring Me Some Water,” “Come to My Window” and “I’m the Only One.” Her fierce vocal style with its Janis Joplin-like rasp, and her self-penned songs, which were a masterful blend of blues and folk-rock, found overwhelming commercial success in 1993 with the album Yes I Am, selling six million copies. She also earned a Grammy for best female rock vocal. In the years that followed her musical career continued while her persona in the public eye revolved around her personal life as a gay woman, a breast cancer survivor and a political activist. Her music is back front and center these days with her excellent album 4th Street Feeling, released this past September. The title refers to the main street of her hometown of Leavenworth, Kansas. It recalls the best work of her early career but filtered through a just world-weary enough persona to provide added insight. Etheridge talked with Atlantic City Weekly about looking forward to her tour and bringing new music to her fans.

Etheridge returns to A.C. Oct. 19 at Caesars to get. But 20 years of practicing actually made me a better guitar player. Now I get it. My lead guitar player, Peter Thorn, has made me a better lead guitar player. I’m so excited about showing you all what I can do.

and Internet to tell their friends word-ofmouth. Word-of-mouth and the radio are still the two ways that the music gets out there. My kids share their music, their playlists, with friends over the Internet and I think it’s great.

You must be excited about bringing these songs to your fans. I’ve haven’t been so excited about playing new material in a long time. I feel like these songs were written for my live audience. This album fits right into the set list. I can’t wait to have these experiences with the audience. I’m going to play the guitar all night, play the harmonica and sing, clap my hands and have fun.

Speaking of your kids, do they like your music and do they turn you on to new artists? All the time. My daughter’s almost 16. It’s all teenage angst, so all the singersongwriters. ‘Have you heard this one, have you heard this?’ And yes, they like my music. They are very sweet about it. Sometimes it’s a little hard on them. Yes, your mom’s going to get up in front of a lot of people and shake her booty.

Sometimes your personal life has been more in the spotlight than your music. How comfortable are you at this moment with your life and career? I had to get comfortable with people talking about my personal life. It’s part of the other side of the coin. The positives outweigh the negatives. Strangers come up to me and tell me they love my music, that it’s meant so much to them, that it changed their life. It’s really beautiful, so I have no complaints about my journey so far. You’ve been to Atlantic City several times. Any favorite spots? I love the Boardwalk. It’s so real. I love Atlantic City and the changes. It is really becoming a nice place and I love to play me some blackjack — a lot! n

Review: ‘4th Street Feeling’ This terrific new album recalls that magical moment when Melissa Etheridge first broke through with her Joplin-like swagger combined with the introspective style of a folk-rock singer-songwriter. This album has it all — an angry, defiant and yet exuberant Etheridge in the cuts “A Disaster” and “Sympathy.” The sensual blues side with the sexy ballad “Rock and Roll Me,” and the soulful, tough-on-herself introspection of “The Shadow of a Black Crow” in which she declares, “I would rather die fast than ever live slow.” There is even a hint of wistful nostalgia as she looks back at her early days growing up in the Midwest with the dynamic “Kansas City” and the title track, wishing to return to the simple days, “That 4th Street Feeling when everything I had could fit into my Chevrolet.” The cut “Falling Up” is breezy fun with more than a hint of country and “Shout Now” is classic uptempo Etheridge. There isn’t a hint of filler, making 4th Street Feeling Etheridge’s best work since Yes I Am. — LH

I love the new album. Talk about what inspired these songs. I just love that I’ve been around for 25 years and feel like I have people that have been on this journey with me for a while and that’s really cool. This album is just filled with whatever I am or was. It’s rock ’n’ roll, it’s got country roots, R&B roots, and it’s emotionally all parts of me. It’s a reminiscence, it’s a memory, it’s looking forward, it’s dealing with some dark feelings that we all get. It’s all that and I have the wonderful job of putting it all together and creating a big ol’ painting from it.

EFORE HE WAS EVEN 10, JAMES “Superharp” Cotton had already heard his calling. Following the passing of his parents in Mississippi, when Cotton was nine years old his uncle took him across the Mississippi River to Arkansas, to meet the great harmonica talent Sonny Boy Williamson. Williamson lived there and hosted the popular King Biscuit Time radio show on KFFA (in Helena). It was a show that caught the attention of anyone who listened, and Williamson and his otherworldly blues harmonica playing made a big impression on Cotton. Cotton, now 77, took up the harmonica at a young age, making the sounds of freight trains wail from his instrument — a gift from his mother — but the cotton-field plantation where he lived and worked was no place for his musical talents to flourish. So the young Cotton went to see his idol and wound up living with him, working with him and eventually setting off on a lifelong journey playing the blues. It wasn’t long before Cotton’s talents caught the attention of like-minded musicians and blues fans as the child performed as an opener during Williamson’s numerous gigs at juke joints throughout the South. (Cotton was too young to get in the bars, so he did his “sets” out in front of the nightclubs before Williamson took the stage inside.) Cotton lived with Williamson for about five years. By the time he was 15, Cotton cut four songs for the legendary Sun Records label in Memphis, Tenn., had befriended and traveled with Howlin’ Wolf and was on his way to getting a radio show of his own. In 1954, the 20-year-old working blues musician had gained a great deal of respect

James ‘Superharp’ Cotton throughout the juke houses and communities of the South. Although he was driving an ice truck during the week to help pay the bills, one December evening that year would change his life — and blues history — forever. During a break from his regular Friday night gig at the West Memphis Dinette Lounge, Muddy Waters, there to hire the kid for a local gig, introduced himself to the young harp player. Cotton would wind up playing and recording with Waters’ band for a dozen years, even suggesting and arranging the bluesman’s classic song, “Got My Mojo Workin’,” and performing longer than any of his mentors got a chance to during their respective lifetimes. Today, seven decades into his musical journey, Cotton remains one of the last living

links to some of America’s greatest artists. While throat cancer has left his speaking voice hoarse and hushed — he doesn’t sing much anymore, but has a new album in the works for 2013 — Cotton still plays dozens of shows annually, around the globe, including a stop at the Stockton PAC Monday, Oct. 22. Cotton was gracious enough to speak with Atlantic City Weekly from his Texas home earlier this month, just prior to playing the King Biscuit Blues Festival in Helena, Ark. “It is going home again when I play Helena,” says Cotton, who remembers living there with the eccentric Sonny Boy Williamson. He says he often reminisces about his early career, moving from city to city with the likes of Muddy, Wolf and others. “I think about [them] quite a bit,” says Cotton. On Williamson, he recalls: “He drank

a lot. And he had his own way of doing things. But he was a nice man and he was very good to me. ... He paid me $3 a day and I got paid every two weeks [for playing at his gigs].” In July 2011, the famed West Coast club Yoshi’s hosted a weekend birthday bash for Cotton. Among the players was an old friend — the late guitarist Hubert Sumlin, who passed away just months following. “I think he had one more performance after that,” says Cotton, who recalls meeting Sumlin prior to hooking up with Howlin’ Wolf. “I had a little three-piece band in West Arkansas,” says Cotton. “He showed up one night and I couldn’t find my guitar player. He had listened to all the old radio shows like I had, and he knew all of the songs.” Sumlin wound up playing with Cotton’s trio, but soon Howlin’ Wolf had called for the guitarist to join him to record and play in Chicago where the Wolf had a hit record. Although Sumlin was hesitant about moving North, Cotton says he talked him into it. “I said, ‘go ahead!’” Cotton is putting the final touches on the follow-up to his Grammy-winning 2010 album Giant. The new record, being recorded in Nashville, is slated for a 2013 release on Alligator Records. “It’s going to be really good,” he says proudly. “That’s all I can say.” Cotton’s wife and manager, Jacklyn, adds that the album is biographical. “Three songwriters in Nashville sat down with Cotton and talked with him and they wrote about his life,” she adds. “It’s a firsttime kind of album for Cotton and he’s pretty excited. Tom Hambridge is producing it.” Expect the album in early January. And expect a blues show for the books at Stockton Oct. 22, when Cotton plays with his quartet. n

WALTZ THROUGH TIME

O.C.’s Four-Hour Horror

The tale of an 85-year-old Boardwalk blaze that stretched for blocks in the seaside resort. By Tom Wilk

C

HANGE CAN COME incrementally or instantaneously. In the space of four hours on Oct. 11, 1927, Ocean City was forever transformed by an inferno that roared along the Boardwalk and through nearby neighborhoods. For one evening, fire was truly a fourletter word for those who fled the path of its destruction and for the firefighters who tried to douse the flames. The Atlantic City Daily Press called it a “night of horror” and summed up the story with an eight-column headline that stretched over two lines on the front page of its Oct. 12 edition: BLAZE SWEEPS OVER FIVE BLOCKS OF OCEAN CITY, BURNS 3 THEATRES, 4 HOTELS AND SCORES OF STORES

The aftermath of the horrible 1927 fire avenues, Moorlyn Terrace and 10th Street before it was finally contained. The flames spread to a Boardwalk garage and the Dodge Motor Agency. In the latter, four gasoline tanks exploded. The blast’s impact reverberated through the city, propelling burning embers and sparks hundreds of feet into the air, according to a newspaper report. It was a scene that would be repeated as the fire traveled through residential areas. The fire’s enormity created unforgettable memories. One observer commented that it seemed as if the ocean were on fire. The flames were visible from up to 25 miles away. The toll of the blaze on city businesses was extensive. The Normandie, Biscayne and Traymore hotels were destroyed. Since it was the offseason, the three buildings were not occupied. A fourth

hotel, the Strand, also was destroyed and its few residents escaped. Other businesses that were lost included the Hippodrome Pier, noted for its vaudeville shows; Shriver’s fudge and ice cream shop; Litterer’s Orangeade; the Strand and Colonial theaters; New York Book Shop; and Seaside Baths. More than two dozen homes also were destroyed. Because of the widespread nature of the blaze, Ocean City put out a call for help from other fire departments across South Jersey. Firefighters from Atlantic City, Pleasantville, Somers Point, Northfield, Hammonton and Sea Isle City were among those to respond. A pair of state troopers on motorcycles escorted firefighters from Camden to the scene. Efforts to extinguish the fire initially were hampered by low water pressure, caused in part by residents using hoses to keep the flames away from their homes.

The additional manpower allowed the blaze to be declared under control around 11pm, but work continued into the next day to make sure the fire did not reignite. The blaze took its toll on the firefighters, injuring nearly 20 men. One firefighter from Ocean City died when his car skidded off the road while responding to the scene. Estimates of fire damage varied. A newspaper report the day after the fire placed the losses at $3 million. That is the equivalent of $39.7 million in 2012 dollars. Anselm said documents at the Ocean City Historical Museum listed damages at just under $811,000, or $10.7 million in 2012 dollars. In retrospect, damage from the fire could have been worse if it occurred during the summer season. Amazingly, a second fire, blamed on arson, struck the Boardwalk six months later in April 1928, causing about $100,000 worth of damage. In the aftermath of the fires, Ocean City officials took steps to make the Boardwalk safer during the reconstruction. Concrete pillars were used as supports to minimize the risk of a future fire, Anselm said, while the new Boardwalk, including the Music Pier, was moved several hundred feet closer to the ocean. Work was completed by the summer of 1928 and the new Boardwalk was dedicated in July. Anselm noted the October inferno had one benefit for the city. “It got rid of a lot of fire traps,” he said. n (Research assistance provided by Heather Halpin Perez and the Atlantic City Free Public Library; photo courtesy O.C. Historical Society.)

Left unmentioned in the story was this irony: The blaze erupted during Fire Prevention Week, which was being observed from Oct. 9-15. Initial reports indicated the fire was started by crossed wires in a building on the Boardwalk at 9th Street. An alternate theory had the blaze beginning around the Hippodrome Pier. “No definitive cause was ever established,” said Paul Anselm, a forensic fire investigator and Ocean City historian who has studied and lectured on the blaze. The fire began shortly after 7pm and moved along the Boardwalk, aided by a strong breeze off the Atlantic Ocean. “Both sides of the Boardwalk between 9th and 10th streets were destroyed,” Anselm said. The blaze would travel off the Boardwalk to parts of Atlantic, Ocean and Wesley

Marathon Weekend

Since the Milton & Betty Katz JCC took over operation of the Atlantic City Marathon in 2009, it has grown into a multi-faceted, weekend-long event that now sees about 4,500 competitors. By Ray Schweibert

Last year’s A.C. Marathon

OCTOBER 18 - 24, 2012 • ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY

H

OPEFULLY THE ATLANTIC CITY Marathon will one day serve as a microcosm for the city whose name it bears — an entity that fell on hard times only to reverse its fortunes and recover stronger than ever. Back in 2009 the United States’ third oldest marathon (behind New York City and Boston, the latter of which is held each April and uses the A.C. Marathon as a qualifier) almost disappeared, a year after its 50th birthday. Like a knight on a white horse, the Milton and Betty Katz Jewish Community Center (JCC) of Margate came to its rescue, growing its combined participation from about 1,000 runners that first year to over 3,000 in 2011 and nearly 4,500 this year, including participants in shorter-distance races. It did so in a fashion similar to what Atlantic City itself is attempting to do — steer itself away from the image of a niche town for gambling to one of diversity. The event saw declining enrollment as merely a marathon, so the JCC incorporated such enticements as a two-day sports and fitness expo, a variety of distances and offshoot races to attract a wider variety of runners, it tweaked the main marathon route and dotted the course with entertainment and “cheer zones,” and treated all runners in the two longest distances (marathon and half-marathon) to a pasta dinner at Bally’s the night before the race. The race committee also created in the Dennis Courtyard a “Finishers Village”

where completers of the race can celebrate (or commiserate) with one another about what they’ve just achieved. The JCC also used its collective heads to work toward its humanitarian causes. The Atlantic City Race Series (including springtime events like the April Fools Half Marathon, 11K and 7K races) supports local community charitable works as well as the JCC’s own Early Childhood Scholarship programs. The fall section of the series includes, along with Sunday’s (Oct. 21) marathon and half-marathon, a Kids Fit Final Mile and OneMile Run, and 5K and 10K races on Saturday (Oct. 20). Additionally, the 26.2-mile marathon course (which goes through the A.C. Connector tunnel and traverses areas like A.C.’s marina district and Margate’s Amherst Avenue dining/entertainment district) stays open for 6.5 hours to allow runners of all levels adequate time to finish. And with so many runners competing in so many events, A.C. Marathon Weekend represents a cross-section of society hailing from many different areas, and competing for a variety of reasons. Among them are Tommy Waszaj, age 24, of Princeton and Jayden Nogueras, 6, of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Waszaj will be competing in Sunday’s halfmarathon as a partner with the organization Dribble the World. The former collegiate basketball player will attempt to run the entire 13.1 miles while dribbling a basketball in an

effort to raise $5,000 for Liquid Water, a nonprofit group that brings safe drinking water to parts of the world where it is lacking. “Here in America we are so blessed — we have access to safe, clean drinking water just about anywhere we go,” says Waszaj. “However there are many people in other countries who don’t have that same privilege. It’s my goal to raise enough money to provide one clean water well to a village in need … I’m excited about the challenge and the possibility of raising this money for such a worthy cause.” Nogueras is entering the Kids Fit Final Mile with the goal of beating his best time of 14 minutes, two seconds, which would be an accomplishment for any six-year-old. For a six-year old with cerebral palsy, epilepsy and being legally blind, it’s a triumph of monumental proportions. Proceeds from the Kids Fit Final Mile benefit the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Atlantic and Cape May Counties, which assists abused and neglected children in the foster-care system. Nogueras has participated in similar benevolent events, the first coming in July 2011 at the Allen Stone Kids Run in Virginia Beach, Virginia. His time was 19:54, and since then he has completed 19 races with a personal best of 14:02. “He was excited about all that was happening in Atlantic City and wanted to experience it,” says his mother, Mary Liz. “He wants to visit the Ocean Life Center and Aquarium [in Gardner’s Basin] and we’re going to surprise him and take him to the Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum [on the A.C. Boardwalk] ... We are really proud of Jayden. We are excited for him to take on this challenge. This endeavor of his has changed his life and ours.” On Thursday, Oct. 18, the Katz JCC’s Early Childhood Program will host a Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) Kids Walk to increase awareness of the more than 15,000 children diagnosed with type-1 diabetes in the United States annually. Dubbed “Kids Helping Kids,” the event will teach children about proper nutrition and good physical fitness activities while becoming advocates for a cure. Each child collecting $10 or more through pledges will qualify for a JDRF Walk prize. “This is the first year we’re doing it, so we’re pretty excited,” says JCC Early Childhood assistant director Gayle Somers. “We’ll have a JDRF representative, Dana Gold, there to help guide us along.” n

That’s particularly true during the summer months, but last year the Atlantic City Marathon Race Series committee decided to tie its flagship fall event in with some of the area’s top musical talent. This year four Equity Communications radio stations have combined to amp up the entertainment slate with eight bands/artists/DJs strategically placed along the entire marathon route. “The live entertainment on the course provides the sound, energy and motivation that runners need to make it through the 26.2-mile course,” says race director Genia Chapman. “It also encourages the local community to come out along the course route to cheer on runners.” “Our goal is to entertain and encourage participants in all four races, plus to generate excitement within the community,” says A.C. Marathon entertainment chairperson Shannon Wray. “All four FM stations [95.1 WAYV, 100.7 WZXL, 96.1 The Touch and 99.3 Kiss FM] have had a call out to bands looking for entertainers of all kinds to join the fun. Locations were chosen along the race route to coordinate with ‘cheer zones,’ ‘water stops’ and natural gathering spots.” (Read more about the music offered at this year’s marathon at acweekly.com) — RS

make connections. We wanted to make a movie based on what your brain does when you read it. “David [author David Mitchell] said, you do this amazing thing. You take highbrow ideas and take them into lowbrow entertaining motifs and you combine them into a one-brow experience. We don’t like that whole market-driven idea of splitting movies up into art house or mainstream.” Now it was time for the actors to weigh in. Tom Hanks was intrigued by, “This united nations approach of filmmaking. It sounded like everything that acting in movies is supposed to be, going to a cool place and having brilliant fun. It will be hard work on occasion and we will have to go into an emotional trench to get [the complexities] right. I’m in.” Huge Grant injected some humor. “I bitterly regret making this film. I thought when they offered these parts, well yes; it will show that I have more strings to my bow than just one. Then all that make-up is applied and I was very bad tempered. Talking about this nice atmosphere on the set … I tried to make it nastier.” Hugo Weaving adds, “One of the things I remember was when we were doing the make-up tests and bumping into people and not recognizing them. When we got together for that first read-through it was an extraordinary day when we all realized we would have to take a jump off a cliff. That leap of faith galvanized everyone.” Susan Sarandon adds that her favorite character to play, “was being a man. When I looked in the mirror I couldn’t even see myself. I looked in the mirror and said, ‘Is that Chris Walken’s cousin?’ It was a startling experience.” n

NE OF THE GREAT PLEASURES of going to the Toronto International Film Festival, beyond getting a sneak peak at the next big movies of the fall, is hearing filmmakers and actors talk about their process. This was particularly true when it comes to the incredibly complex and delightfully quirky sci-fi film Cloud Atlas, coming out Oct. 26. Directed by German director Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run) and Lana (formerly Larry) and Andy Wachowski (The Matrix) and based on the novel of the same name, the film stars Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugo Weaving, Jim Broadbent, Jim Sturgess, Susan Sarandon and Hugh Grant. The actors play multiple characters in elaborate makeup in six different story lines that travel back and forth in time. The deeper we go, the more these different threads wind together into a tale of humanity’s flaws and the search for meaning in the universe. It is a lot funnier (in a good way) then the summation suggests. On adapting the complex novel, Tykwer notes, “The novel was the most exciting thing we had read in a long time. It had [elements] that made it attractive as a joint experience. We swore an oath that we wanted to adapt it only if the author [David Mitchell] that we so respected loved it. We went to a beach in Costa Rica and after putting the novel in a lot of little pieces, tried to rearrange them in a way that made sense as a film.” Lana Wachowski explains, “The book was written as a series of short stories. It’s more acceptable in literature to have the anthology format. For a movie we thought it would be too hard for the audience to have six different stories. As you read it your brain begins to
