tlantic City’s Kentucky Avenue was once a hotbed of jazz activity, with the best of the best players from the 1950s-’70s performing on the legendary strip known as “KY & the Curb,” making it one of Atlantic City’s premier live music attractions. It was also a magnet for the best Hammond B3 jazz organists in the world — from Jimmy Smith to Larry Young. Although you wouldn’t know from the desolation row that Kentucky Avenue has become, with nary a sign of the old clubs that used to have folks lining up for blocks just to get in, the Chelsea Pub (8. S. Morris Ave., A.C.) is bringing the sounds of the Hammond B3 back starting Halloween night, Oct. 31, with a Halloween party / concert featuring Dan Fogel and his trio (10pm-1am; $15 at door). Fogel, who will also perform Nov. 1 on the Chelsea Pub’s gorgeous second floor, officially grew up in Margate, but you could also say he grew up in the jazz clubs of Atlantic City. By age 16 he was playing in the house band at the Wonder Gardens with drummer Harvey Mason. He observed and sat in with some of the greats of the jazz organ, as well, which has led to a remarkable career, with Downbeat magazine recently naming him among the Top 20 Hammond B3 players out there today. His last album, 10 West, includes liner notes written by jazz legend Nat Hentoff. “His is the kind of jazz that lifts my spirits when nothing else will,” Hentoff writes, “making me move with it, and sometimes just shout in pleasure.” Fogel will be appearing at the Chelsea Pub every Thursday and Friday night through Jan. 3. “Come and see one of the last living legends of the Hammond B3 organ from the Jimmy Smith era,” says Fogel, adding, “As my old friend Dr. Lonnie Smith would say, ‘It’s going to be just too damned hot!’” The grand opening of Danny’s Hammond Organ Jazz Lounge at The Chelsea Pub & Inn should be a scorcher.

or fans of the Vermont jam band Phish, which of course returns to Atlantic City for three sold-out shows at Boardwalk Hall Oct. 31-Nov. 2, perhaps the next best thing to seeing the funky foursome live is to check out a free traveling fan art exhibit that first launched in 2003. PhanArt Exhibits have become a part of Phish tours as a collective way for fans to share their fondness for the premier modern-day improvisational quartet. The Phish-byPhans A.C. art exhibit will be held Saturday, Nov. 2, from noon-5pm at Caesars’ Tiberius, Spartacus and Romulus rooms, featuring the best Phish-inspired art including limited-edition art made specifically for the Atlantic City shows. There will also be a large portfolio of current and past concert poster art and, for the first time, set-list tees — a line of T-shirts that feature fan-requested concert set lists with unique designs for each show. The exhibit will also include a popular series of pins custom-designed for the A.C. shows, and a live streaming of the first-ever Phantiques Road Show. Fans are encouraged to bring their collectible art to be reviewed by a panel of expert curators who will be on site for appraisal. Charitable donations from the event will be made to the Mockingbird Foundation, which has given grants for music education totaling more than $700,000 over the past 15 years. Lonnie Holley
‘Keeping a Record of It’ (Dust to Digital)
U
nless you are a fan of the visual arts, you probably have not heard of Lonnie Holley. The acclaimed visual artist and art educator, who at the age of 29 hand carved the tombstones for his two sisters — who died in a house fire as children — was born in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1950. Before releasing a pair of albums on the archival Dust to Digital label, Holley went on to dabble in assorted media, from sculpture, carving, paintings, digital art, and “trash art” — making art out of found objects and recycling garbage — with his works appearing in the Smithsonian and several other museums and esteemed collections. On the 2013 follow-up to his 2012 album Just Before Music, Holley sings/speaks (sounding like a mix between Archie Shepp, Gil Scott-Heron and the best of the Beat poets reciting lines over music) seven extraordinary improvised song/poems with organic sounds fed through digital machines. The result, Keeping a Record of It, is one of the most impressive albums of the year from one of the country’s most compelling artists. — Jeff Schwachter
A.C. Celebrates the Fall Season and Oktoberfest By Kailin Montague
C
ities around the world host Oktoberfest celebrations and variations of the event, mimicking the original in Munich. Just like in the past, the Atlantic City area has its own Oktoberfest celebrations. Tun Tavern, hosting their Harvest Brewmaster Dinner, is offering a fall inspired three-course meal with their very own hand-crafted beers infused in the recipes. Brewmaster Tim Kelly and chef Dave Levecchia host the dinner Friday, Nov. 1, 7pm, for beer enthusiasts and food lovers to enjoy live music, tastings and, of course, food. Dinner is $59 per person (347-7800). The Crab Trap in Somers Point is also celebrating the autumn season with their new fall harvest menu consisting of three-course dinner specials that are offered Mon.-Thurs. from 5-10pm for $19.95 (927-7377). Interested in new fall recipes? “Philips Oktoberfest,” a cooking class with chef Paul Drew of Atlantic City’s Phillip’s Seafood Restaurant, will be offered Saturday, Oct. 26. Classes, $75, include a chef demo, lunch and wine tasting. Classes begin at 11:30am. Register early by calling 348-2273. Need more Oktoberfest? The Trump Taj Mahal’s 20th annual Oktoberfest takes place Saturday, Oct. 26, from noon-8pm and Sunday, Oct. 27, from noon-6pm in the Grand Ballroom. Admission is $5 (trumptaj.com). Also, on Oct. 26, The new Iron Room at the Atlantic City Bottle Company (348-6400) is hosting an Oktoberfest celebration beginning at noon until they run out of beer. Only New Jersey craft breweries will be represented and bratwurst and perogies will be served. For more information visit acbottlecompany.com. see more online @

et’s time warp back 38 years when a horror comedy science fiction musical spoof opened quietly in September 1975 in Los Angeles. Based on a British stage show that opened in London in 1973, the film featured a cast of unknowns — Tim Curry, Barry Bostwick, Susan Sarandon, Meat Loaf and Richard O’Brien, the author of the stage play and the music. The movie did very poorly at the box office and closed. However, The Rocky Horror Picture Show did not go quietly into the night. Cult movie screenings at midnight had recently become a new phenomenon at the Waverly Theater in New York City’s Greenwich Village. Rocky Horror began there as a midnight show in 1976 and from there the legend took root. The fans began dressing up as the characters and shouting back at the screen with ad-libs. Soon fans were lip-synching to the whole show as their favorite characters and props such as newspaper, rice, toast and water pistols were part of the event, as was dancing to the “Time Warp.” Now, let’s time warp back to 2013. The phenomenon continues this Saturday, Oct. 26, as The Rocky Horror Picture Show will be presented at the Showboat’s House of Blues Music Hall with a “shadowcast,” live performers provided by The Home of Happiness, a group that has been doing a Rocky Horror live show since 1998.
Showboat/House of Blues Music Hall Saturday, Oct. 26, pre-show reception 9pm; show 11pm How Much: $20-$36. (Must be 18 or over)
EVENT INFO
Time Warp Time ‘Rocky Horror Picture Show’ with live cast at Showboat By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com For those of you Rocky Horror “virgins” out there here’s the plot for RHPS. Newly engaged couple Brad and Janet (Barry Bostwick, Susan Sarandon) encounter a problem when their car breaks down in the rain. They both look for help, only to find themselves at the castle of Dr. Frank-N-Furter (Tim Curry) a transvestite from Transsexual, Transylvania. A place to stay is offered, but will Brad and Janet want to stay, even for a night? As the night continues, a large group of Transylvanians dance to the “Time Warp,” Dr. Frank-N-Furter builds his own man, the muscular blonde bombshell Rocky Horror
(Peter Hinwood) and the ominous servant Riff-Raff (RH creator Richard O’Brien) keeps giving Brad and Janet dirty looks. All this plays out with musical numbers including “Sweet Transvestite,” “Dammit Janet,” “I Can Make You A Man,” and “ Touch-a, Touch-a, Touch-a, Touch Me.” Then there is Meat Loaf as Eddie singing “Hot Patootie (Bless My Soul)” before he is served up as the evening meal. Larry Viezel, the cast director for The Home of Happiness, got hooked on The Rocky Horror Picture Show in 1992 at a theater in Paramus, N.J. ‘I had heard that people throw things like

rice and toilet paper, but I really didn’t know what to expect. It was amazing, a wild raucous party. People were yelling at the screen and it was some of the funniest stuff I had ever heard. I loved the music. I didn’t think I would see it again, but I went back with more friends and 20 years later I am still involved in this crazy show.” He explains what his group brings to the party. “You have the movie, which is essential to the experience. Then you have our talented performers who perform in front of the movie, the audience that yells stuff and throws stuff and we also do screen gags.” Viezel also wants to assure fans that they can still dress up as their favorite characters and participate, joining the professional cast. “Rocky Horror is all about audience participation. If people come dressed up we will have them dance the Time Warp. It is our pleasure to have people show up [and perform]. It is the best part of the show.” He also notes while his group has done two shows at the House of Blues before, this is their first Halloween show at the venue. “It’s going to be a first and we are excited.” n see more online @

Legend Has it
Revel, Ovation Hall, Atlantic City. Friday, Oct. 25, 8pm How Much: $59.50, $89.50 and $580.00.
EVENT INFO
At 34, John Legend has it all — a successful music career, a new wife and a heart that’s more inclined to help others than help himself. Catch him at Revel and give thanks, even if it’s just for the majestic music he creates. By Ed Condran • feedback@acweekly.com
J
ohn Legend has gone national and beyond but the former University of Pennsylvania student, comes off as a Philly guy. “I feel like one,” Legend said before performing at Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels’ ‘Diamonds and Denim’ benefit earlier this year. “I love the area. Philadelphia and New Jersey.” Legend, who will perform Friday, Oct. 25, at Revel’s Ovation Hall, put on a stirring show for Hamels’ wealthy friends at the beneft. The well-heeled audience reminded one of the old John Lennon line, ‘will the people in the cheaper seats clap your hands and the rest of you just rattle your jewelry?’ Rimshot, please. Even though he is just 34, Legend is becoming well, legendary. The gifted vocalistkeyboardist and songwriter already owns nine Grammys. Legend has had plenty of chart success with hits such as “Ordinary People,” “Heaven” and “Save Room.” “That’s why I brought him in,” Hamels said. “John Legend is amazing. Who wouldn’t want to see him?” Who wouldn’t want to work with him? Legend has performed and written with Twista, Janet Jackson, Kanye West and Alicia Keys. “I can’t say enough about John Legend,” Keys said. ”He is incredibly gifted. He doesn’t think or play like anybody else out there. He adds so much to your music. I hope to work with him again.” Legend isn’t just sharp in the studio. He also impresses the think tank set. Legend is one of Bill Maher’s favorite guests. “There are a couple of people that I love having on the show,” Maher said. “I love people who have an opinion and are smart and funny. Guys at the top of my list are D.L. Hughley and John Legend. They’re very intelligent guys, who don’t hold back. John Legend isn’t just a tremendous musician. He’s a very clever guy, who backed Obama and who just knows the world and what he’s doing.” Legend has had much success as a musician, but he’s doing fine outside of the studio as well. He recently married Sports Illustrated model Chrissy Teigen, who appears in her husband’s “All Of Me” video. The song,
according to Legend, was inspired by their relationship. Why didn’t Legend continue playing the field as he’s a young, successful bachelor? “I can’t speak for anybody, but I married when I was very young,” Hamels said. “If you know it’s right, you go for it. Not everyone can be Derek Jeter [who never married and continues to play the field at 39]. Actually very few people can be Derek Jeter and not be married. You go with that gut instinct.” It’s not surprising that Legend is a charismatic figure under the lights. Legend engages the audience and has a great time connecting with the crowd. “I like people,” Legend said. He also likes doing the right thing. Legend helped those suffering in Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina hit. He participated in the Live Earth benefit concert in 2007. He toured with Professor Jeff Sachs in 2008 to talk about sustainable development. He has contributed funds for AIDS-related health issues and he participated in “Chimes For Change,” which is all about raising awareness for women’s issues. “You need to do the right thing in life,” Legend said. “That’s especially when you’re very fortunate. Not everyone is so fortunate. You have to give back. Life can’t just be all about making music and touring. There’s a certain responsibility that goes with it.” Legend is one of those extremely talented characters, who could do a number of different things. Who knows what he’ll do next? “I’m a pretty mellow guy that just wants to enjoy life, make music and help people out,” Legend said. “My life has been pretty great so far. What the future holds is unpredictable. I just hope to continue doing what I’m doing. I want to make more music and tour.” Since Legend is madly in love, expect more love songs from the soulful bard. His sexy wife, who during interviews has admitted that she never wears underwear, must be quite the muse. Just check out Legend’s sensual track “The Beginning.” Legend is the new Barry White. If you’re wondering where the love songs are, the amore market is cornered by he and Adele, who are both smart enough to know that the audience is either in love or searching for it. ■ see more online @

Make a little mischief
KARO
Boca Raton, Fla., a state trooper, a gay guy and the character who eventually became Larry the Cable Guy. “I was never a full-fledged part of a morning show, but when I had days off, they’d let me come in and be a sidekick, which I actually loved, because it helped me learn how to write stuff,” he explained. There’s a little bit of Whitney in Larry, who was raised on a pig farm in Missouri but didn’t have a southern accent — and still doesn’t. That was something he picked up from a couple of college roommates and from comedian Jeff Foxworthy, a native of Georgia. Foxworthy and Whitney were friends long before either became famous and would spend time together riffing jokes back and forth for hours on end. Of all his characters, though, Larry the Cable Guy – whose catch phrase “git ‘er done” has become his signature — was the one that struck a raw comedy nerve with his audiences. He’s also the easiest for Whitney to write for, because he was basically raised in an environment where he was surrounded by a bunch of Larrys. “I’m good at it, because I grew up with that. Wasn’t hard to write for him; wasn’t hard to get into character. I’ve been doing that character since I was 14, really,” he said. “I grew up on a pig farm with nothing but 50- or 60-yearold cow farmers, so I was always able to drop in and out of that accent and that character.” In person, Whitney, who also hosts the series Only In America on the History Channel, bares little resemblance to Larry. Whitney gets annoyed when Web sites portray him as the same person off stage as on. “People write their own crap on [the Internet]. I’m out of character all the time,” he said. “The only reason I’m ever in character as Larry The Cable Guy is because that’s what I’m hired to do. In my movies, obviously they hired Larry The Cable Guy to be Larry The Cable Guy. When I do my shows, I’m Larry The Cable Guy. When I do Jay Leno, it’s, ‘Please welcome Larry The Cable Guy.’” That’s why he enjoys doing the TV series, in which Whitney travels the country and immerses himself into jobs, experiences and moments that can only be found in America. And the History Channel lets Whitney to determine whether or not the Larry accent and full-fledged persona is necessary. “Sometimes there’ll be an accent when I need to have an accent and be funny,” he explained. “Then other times, when I’m in a serious conversation, I’ll drop the accent.” n

is corn-pone drawl, southern-fried redneck humor and the occasional and almost obligatory fart joke have made Larry the Cable Guy a favorite target of some comedy critics. Dan Whitney could care less. The welltraveled comedian, who morphs into Larry when he slips on his plaid shirt and camouflage baseball cap, isn’t in the business of entertaining critics. He’s in it to entertain an audience, and if the critics don’t like it — or chose to ignore a few thousand people doubled over in laughter — then Whitney/ Larry doesn’t give a big pig’s behind. Besides, he pointed out, many critics simply don’t like southern-style comedy. So whenever they level criticism at the Larry character, they’re simply revealing their prejudice for the genre. “I don’t do my show for critics. Early on I did, because I’m a nice guy and I like to be liked by everybody. [And then] I thought, ‘Hey, I’m just making people laugh, what’s the big deal?’” Whitney told the Web site avclub.com in August. “There have been all different types of comics that appeal to all different types of people. Why rail on me? But yeah, they really don’t like southern acts. I could care less what a critic says. A critic doesn’t buy a ticket to my show. Or if he does, fine. But that’s not who I perform for.” Long before he began doing characterbased comedy, Whitney, 50, was a veteran of the comedy club circuit. Working without the thick southern accent, Whitney was a conventional stand-up act whose comedy role models were the old masters of the genre: Milton Berle, Jack Benny, Henny Youngman, Don Rickles, Phyllis Diller and George Carlin among them. It was those old pros from whom Whitney learned how to structure a joke, how to work the set up and the split-second timing of delivering the punch line for maximum effect. But because his Larry persona is so over the top, most of his fans don’t realize they’re watching a true comedy artisan at work. Or that he’s so adept at telling a joke that it often has two or three punch lines, not just one, and that each punch is often a prelude to an even bigger payoff at the end of the bit. Whitney, who’ll channel Larry the Cable Guy Saturday, Oct. 26, in Revel Casino’s Ovation Hall, began his path to stardom in the early 1990s, when he began making appearances on various morning radio shows performing different characters. He portrayed, at various times, an old lady from

One can attain clear culinary realization at Buddakan — equal parts Buddhist temple and rock and roll. By Frank Gabriel • feedback@acweekly.com

pscale American restaurant fare has thankfully ceased to be defined by stuffy rooms where conversation is only conducted in hushed, whispered tones. The best example we can think of to illustrate our new paradigm is Buddakan, situated mid-ship on the third level of the Pier Shops at Caesars. Rebellious and yet at the same time, quite reverent, Buddakan is an authentic palace of modern Asian cuisine. The atmosphere, equal parts Buddhist temple and rock and roll, proves just edgy enough to entice twentysomethings — on this busy Saturday night, a birthday party of young women supping at the central communal table — while still charming other customers twice their age. Our meal began, appropriately enough with Buddakan style sashimi — razor-thin cuts of hamachi (yellowtail) striped across a long, rectangular black plate atop a green banana leaf. Doused with warm, fragrant oil, citrus and soy, finished by a toss of sliced jalapeno and red onion, the pale purplish fish shone like shards of precious stone. Capably sliced into slightly-larger-thanbite-size cuts, the hamachi sashimi was a precious introductory note from the kitchen. Our second arrival, king crab tempura, brought eight large chunks of golden, lightly battered, pale white seafood. With the season for this prized crustacean delectable now underway, the crab tasted pristine and slightly sweet. Treated with great respect by the kitchen, it had been flash fried until just beyond the sashimi within, while still retaining the traditional crunch of tempura exterior. Ladled beneath in a wide, ivory chalice
was a simply divine sweet and sour ponzu sauce. Light in viscosity and flavor, this auburn broth did nothing to impede that gossamer crab’s grand entrance. Our favorite item of the evening, spicy rock shrimp bao buns with pickled slaw, were delivered next. Portioned three per order, our server sagely recommended adding an extra so that each of us could enjoy equal numbers. It’s that sort of sharp training — also an ‘upsell’ for the restaurant — which helps define all Stephen Starr organization eateries. The buns themselves, soft, puffy and pleasantly sticky, rolled up like groovy little Asian tortillas. Cradled within was a sizzling blend of tiny,
crisp shrimp in creamy garlic/chile sauce. A pleasant textural component, the cabbage and carrot slaw topside was also tinged with a solid dose of vinegar for bite. From a list of a half dozen noodle and rice dishes, we opted for shrimp lo mein. Buddakan’s spin adds potent, exhilarating XO sauce — created from dried seafood, garlic, hot pepper and ginger — plus a toss of bright green scallions. The lo mein itself was soft and pliable, clinging to a treasure trove of shrimp and vegetables, but would have benefited from a shorter cooking time. My main course, black pepper beef, probably a half pound of cubed, wok-fired rib eye pieces, was garnished with an appealing bird’s nest of fried glass noodles.

Buddakan is an authentic palace of modern Asian cuisine.
The meat was nicely seared, still very juicy and sauced with just enough capsicum to satiate any pepper-craving fiend. The night’s most dramatic plate was easily our crispy whole fish, a two-pound red snapper. Unbelievably fresh it had been bathed in oil, probably in a wok, until crisp outside but still moist and medium within. A Cantonese sweet and spicy sauce, studded with grilled, diced pineapple completed the plating. This snapper was indeed one fine fish and we relished digging into various sections — cheek, collar, belly and loin — for steamy, shiny white meat. Therein lies the beauty of whole fish, experiencing the entirety, not just a filet or steak cut. The arrival was a show-stopping event; strangers at a nearby table ceased their own meal to marvel and ooh at this perfect poisson. We sampled a trio of desserts, each demonstrating the skills of pastry chef Steven Barile. First was a fairly traditional almond bread pudding — a rich, warm, yellowy disc and sliced bananas swimming happily in butterscotch sauce accessorized by whiskey ice cream. Then came a more unconventional offering — grilled coconut cake with passion fruit crème, basil and rum-coconut sorbet, tropical and lush. Finally, an absolutely spectacular Thai basil and chocolate sorbet, with an incipient bang of licorice from the herb that explodes a few seconds after consumption. Complex, artistic and thoughtful, this final taste of our evening serves well as a microcosm of everything that is Buddakan. ■

Midnight Rider Returns Rock and Roll Hall-of-Famer Gregg Allman brings his solo band back to Atlantic City Oct. 26 at the Taj. By Ray Schweibert • feedback@acweekly.com
I
life of the touring rock star — was so well received that plans are in the works to bring it to the silver screen, slated for release in spring 2014. Allman, best known as lead vocalist, keyboardist, guitarist and principal songwriter for the Allman Brothers Band, has had his own solo band since 1972, formed just three years after the Allman Brothers’ on-again, off-again history started in 1969. The current incarnation of the Gregg Allman Band includes Allman on Hammond B3 organ, guitar and lead vocals, keyboardist Ben Stivers, drummer Steve Potts, bassist Jerry Jemmott, saxophonist Jay Collins, guitarist Scott Sharrard and percussionist Marc Quiñones. The group makes a stop at the Mark G. Etess Arena at the Trump Taj Mahal on Saturday night, Oct. 26, on a tour that began about three weeks after a 14-gig Allman Brothers tour ended. Atlantic City Weekly spoke with Allman briefly between the two tours from his Savannah home. “We’ll rehearse for about four days before the [Gregg Allman Band] tour starts,” he says. “I always rehearse before we go out because you have to kind of remove the Allman Brothers stuff and get back into a groove with the other band, since I just came back off tour with the

n the three years since he and his solo band last made a tour stop in Atlantic City, rock legend Gregg Allman’s life took a lot of different twists and turns, which is a fact that can pretty much apply to his entire 65-year existence thus far. In 2010 he and the Gregg Allman Band — which he plays with when not touring with the group he helped establish over 40 years ago, the Allman Brothers Band — released their first album in 13 years, Low Country Blues (named after Allman’s current hometown of Savannah, Georgia; often dubbed the “low country” of the South). He also underwent a liver transplant that same year that, he believes, was the result of a contaminated tattoo needle that caused him to contract Hepatitis C, which was diagnosed at a late stage. To read his autobiographical book My Cross to Bear (released in 2012, the name a spin-off of Allman’s song “It’s Not My Cross to Bear” from the Allman Brothers’ eponymous debut album), however, one can’t help but wonder how much years of substance abuse (Allman’s been free of addiction for about 16 years) contributed to a series of subsequent, serious health issues. That book — which puts plenty of humorous spins on the behind-the-scenes
Brothers.” Many of the songs overlap both bands, particularly those that Allman penned himself like “I’m No Angel,” “Ain’t Wasting Time No More,” “Please Call Home,” “Melissa,” “Just Before the Bullets Fly,” “Midnight Rider,” “Whipping Post,” and the cover of Blind Willie McTell’s “Statesboro Blues.” Allman shared a fondness for roulette with AC Weekly the last time he was in town with his solo band, but the A.C. gig is sandwiched between those in Morrisville, N.J., the night before and Hershey, Pa., the following night, so finding time to hit the wheel might be an issue. “I don’t know, I might wedge a couple of games in there, you never know,” he says. “I love coming to the Northeast. That’s where our biggest fan base is [the Allman Brothers have performed in New York City’s intimate Beacon Theater over 200 times, and had their 40th reunion series of shows there in 2009]. I’m jazzed to be coming back to Atlantic City.” There are a couple of Atlantic City references in My Cross to Bear, one mentioning that Allman’s uncle Robbie did a lot of construction work on the “Atlantic City Pier” (it does not specify which one), and that the band did a series of shows on the Steel Pier in their early years that, says Allman, were forgettable. “During July 1971 we did a week’s worth
of gigs at the Steel Pier in Atlantic City, and as far as gigs went, that was the lowest of the low,” he says. “That’s where we realized that we were all hooked on that white powder that made us feel so good.” One of the more serious passages in the book is when Allman recalls being asked by his older brother Duane if he stole some of his cocaine. Gregg Allman says “No I did not,” and those would be the last words the younger said to the older brother. Duane Allman — to this day considered one of the greatest guitarists of all time — was killed in a motorcycle accident on Oct. 29, 1971, at age 24. “I had never lied to Duane like that because there was no reason to,” he says in the book, also disclosing regrets that his brother died at the same time the Allman Brothers’ rise to fame was just hitting its stride. “Even when we were kids, and I knew there was an asswhipping coming, I couldn’t lie to him. I could try, but he would see right through me.” Quiñones, a Latin percussionist who first joined the Allman Brothers in 1991 on the tour to promote their studio album Shades of Two Worlds, is currently touring with the Gregg Allman Band in place of Floyd Miles, who has knee problems, according to Allman. Miles and founding Allman Brothers drummer Jaimoe Johanson both go back to the beginning with the Allmans, which for two African-American men was an anomaly in the late-1960s southern states. This, and the fact that Gregg and Duane Allman’s love for music stemmed out of seeing Otis Redding as kids from the nosebleed seats of Nashville Municipal Auditorium, also manifests itself in Gregg Allman’s book. “If a musician could play we didn’t look at his skin color,” he says.” Unfortunately we were in the minority back then, since, when it came to racism, the shit was boiling up in the South.” ■

Hopkins Defends Title in A.C. Boxing returns to Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall with an exciting night of fights. By Rob Scott • feedback@acweekly.com

peaking with Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins a couple of weeks ago, the reigning IBF light heavyweight champion said, “I am going to keep riding until the wheels fall off.” He was making reference to his long-standing presence at the top of a sport where now, at the advanced age of 48, the Philadelphia native still continues to leave fans and opponents in awe. The awe continues on Saturday, Oct. 26, when Hopkins (53-6-2; 32 KOs), makes his ring return to Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall, taking on mandatory contender, Karo Murat, (25-1-1; 15 KOs), in a scheduled 12-round defense of his championship. It’s a fight that went through twists and turns to actually come into existence. Murat, the Iraqi born, German resident, initially faced Visa issues, causing rejection of his admittance into the country. This forced the scheduled Hopkins-Murat July 13 fight, which was to have taken place in New York at the new Barclay Center, to ultimately be
cancelled. It also forced the IBF to seek out a replacement for the mandatory position, eventually forcing the Jersey-based organization to insert rugged Sergey Kovalev of Russia as its new mandatory challenger. Kovalev instead opted to face, and ultimately beat, WBO champion Nathan Cleverly. For Murat, the boxing gods must have been watching, because as luck and blessings would have it, the initial Visa issues were resolved, clearing the way for him to finally enter the United States. These turn of events also made it possible for the IBF to again insert Murat as their mandatory contender and challenger for Hopkins’ belt. Hopkins, a former undisputed middleweight champion and the oldest fighter to win a major world title, will be making the first defense of his light heavyweight championship that he won back in March against Tavoris Cloud. It’s his third reign as a 175-pound world champion, initially winning the lineal title back in June 2006 when he put on a boxing clinic against Antonio
Tarver. That spectacular win took place in the very same ring that he and Murat will be entering on Saturday night. The Hopkins vs. Murat clash headlines an exciting night of fights. In the co-main event, WBO middleweight champion, Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin (29-0; 21 KOs), defends his crown against the tough Philadelphia standout Gabriel Rosado (21-6; 13 KOs), who aims to prove a point after a failed bid to take WBA champion Gennady Golovkin’s strap two fights ago. Learning from the mistakes he made in that fight with Golovkin, Rosado has revamped his mind and body, so there will be no more setbacks. Rosado has stated how much he thinks his challenge to Quillin will be totally different from the disaster of his of his first middleweight title challenge. “Kid does believe in himself, and that’s what makes him a good fighter. But technique-wise, he is not all that fundamentally sound.” He went on to say, “He’s a little raw and makes a lot of mistakes that I’m going to
make him pay for.” The champion, Quillin, has been on a tear though, dropping his last three opponents a combined 11 times. One of those opponents was former undisputed junior middleweight champion Ronald “Winky” Wright, who Quillin knocked down in the sixth round of their fight en route to a much deserved unanimous decision victory. After that fight, Quillin’s status rose even higher, being credited with sending the former star, Wright, into permanent retirement. Also making his Atlantic City debut will be 2008 Olympic bronze medalist and current WBC Continental Americas heavyweight champion Deontay “The Bronze Bomber” Wilder, (29-0; 29 KOs), of Tuscaloosa, Ala., who takes on Nicolai “Stone Man” Firtha, (21-10-1; 8 KOs), of Akron, Ohio, in a scheduled 10-round attraction. Much is being said and many eyes are becoming glued to the 6-foot-7 knockout artist, Wilder, whose record gives many to hope for an American heavyweight champ. Not yet having fought a who’s-who in the division, however, Wilder’s last two fights, two first-round knockouts of the U.K.’s Audley Harrison and former WBO world heavyweight champion Sergei Liakhovich of Belarus, have given needed exposure to his name and aura. He promises more, telling Atlantic City Weekly: “You can definitely expect a knockout, that’s for sure. But more than that, you can expect excitement and entertainment.” Wilder further goes on to say, “I like to please the fans because I’m a crowd pleaser. You can expect the same that was seen in all the other fights. That’s what I’m going to continue, even after I win the belts.” Come out for this night of hard-hitting bouts brought to you by Golden Boy Promotions and Caesars Atlantic City. (Note: Read full interviews with Hopkins, Rosado and Wilder at acweekly.com. Some of the bouts will be shown on Showtime.) ■

Raw Brutality
‘12 Years A Slave’ explores the shameful stain of human bondage By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com
T
here have been numerous movies over the decades that have explored the Holocaust, too many to mention. Those many films have also included scenes that show modern German citizens who ignore or deny their past. Steve McQueen’s brutally honest depiction of slavery in America based on a true story, 12 Years A Slave, hits like a sledgehammer, in part because it suggests that films about slavery are rare because we are
guilty of burying the shameful aspects of our history as well. The remarkable British/ Nigerian actor Chiwetel Ejiofor (Choo-it-tell Edge-ee-o-for) stars as Solomon Northrup, the free man kidnapped and sold into slavery for the 12 years of the title. We first meet Northrup in his home in upstate New York, a free man and musician who is part of the community, seemingly without any racial tension. As a man who has never felt the sting of
being considered less than human because of the color of his skin, he has no defense against the men who trick him and make a fast buck by selling him into slavery. His shock, outrage and desire for justice are soon beaten and whipped into submission on the surface. He learns that guile must be his friend, that he must hide his intelligence and especially his anger. McQueen uses this true story, based on Northrup’s own account, to shine a floodlight on the horrifying barbarism of slavery. If you thought Quentin Tarantino showed the brutality of slavery in Django Unchained, you might find the savagery in McQueen’s film hard to watch. McQueen wants us to truly understand the torture of slavery. We feel the agony of a woman being flayed with a whip to the point of turning away from the screen. That woman is Patsey (Lupita Nyong’o), a slave who both fascinates and repels her sadistic owner, Edwin Epps (Michael Fassbender). When he isn’t whipping her to please his wife, he is praising her for her skill in picking cotton and raping her nightly. Faced with a world where his humanity has been stolen, Northrup’s courage and determination are well hidden from those who scan his responses for any signs that he is getting uppity. His ordeal seems hopeless, but his will to live won’t let him give in to

the despair. Ejiofor was introduced to arthouse audiences in Steven Frears’ superb Dirty Pretty Things and has been building his resume ever since, from supporting roles in Serenity, Children of Men and Salt to starring roles in Red Belt and the flashy Lola in Kinky Boots. Now he has found the role of a lifetime and delivers an unforgettable performance, using his expressive eyes to convey the pain, agony and rage his character must keep hidden. Beyond the brilliance of Ejiofor, there is a brazen performance by Fassbender, who holds nothing back in portraying the relentless evil of a man who finds pleasure in inflicting pain, and Nyong’o, whose film debut here is astonishing. 12 Years A Slave is one of the best films of the year thanks to the master behind the camera. McQueen has delivered a film that puts him in the upper echelon of maverick directors who want to say something meaningful with their talent. In the current era of filmmaking that is a rare and treasured gift. n
