laridge Atlantic City, the former casino on the Boardwalk and current hotel tower for Bally’s, located next to the former Sands site, has been sold, it was announced Tuesday. The 24-story building, opened in 1930, is owned by Bally’s Atlantic City hotel and casino (under Caesars Entertainment’s Atlantic City umbrella, which also includes the Showboat, Caesars and Harrah’s). On Oct. 29 it was announced that TJM Properties, Inc., a Clearwater, Fla., based hotel operator, has agreed to purchase the Claridge Hotel Tower. “We are very pleased with TJM Properties’ extensive experience and its plan to keep the hotel open and operating while it upgrades the rooms, installs a new front desk and restaurant,” said Kevin Ortzman, senior VP of Caesars Entertainment. The sale, which is expected to close within 90 days, is subject to customary closing conditions. “Through its investment, TJM will be adding non-gaming amenities that will enhance the experience of guests of the Claridge, Bally’s and the entire city,” Ortzman also said. “TJM’s plans are in keeping with our goal of adding non-gaming amenities to Atlantic City, such as the 250,000 square-foot meeting and conference center — the largest in the Northeast — that we’re building at Harrah’s Atlantic City.” Matt McCarthy, of TJM Properties, said: “We look forward to bringing more non-gaming amenities to the Atlantic City community.”

The Melodic

‘Effra Parade’ (Anti-)

D

eeply melodic — and mellow — with nods to Johnny Flynn, Beirut, Belle & Sebastian and The Decemberists, the Melodic is a band out of the London neighborhood of Brixton. For its debut LP, Effra Parade,, the band self-recorded a shuffling set of beautiful tunes, utilizing 18 different instruments, over several years. Although the album was recorded in a “modest” studio built out of a former South London bedroom, the sound is as gorgeous and explorative as the music. Songs such as “Roots” and “Runaway” are perfectly plucked gems, while “On My Way” could be a legit hit. But the Melodic, which releases its debut on the Anti- label, following its acclaimed EP On My Way, don’t seem too concerned about hits. The innovative Brit pop ensemble would rather take its time crafting retro sounds, saluting English ’60s folk heroes such as Bert Jansch, the Incredible String Band, Vashti Bunyan, Fairport Convention and Nick Drake while taking the baton from Scotland’s Belle & Sebastian for a stretch. — Jeff Schwachter

n Friday, Nov. 1, Ailey II will be performing at the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. Alvin Ailey was an African American choreographer and activist who founded the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre in New York City in 1958. Ailey is accredited with popularizing the unique form of modern dance and revolutionizing African American participation in 20th century contemporary, expressionist, postmodern, improvisation and modern dance. Ailey took pride in his multi-racial company; he wanted to give opportunities to African American dancers who were frequently excluded from performances during that time. The company always employed artists based solely on their talent and integrity rather than their race. Even after his death in 1989, the Company continues Mr. Ailey’s mission to establish an extended cultural community that provides dance performances, training and community programs for everyone. In 1974, Ailey II was founded also embodying Ailey’s mission. Ailey II is universally renowned for merging the spirit of the country’s best young, thriving dance talent with the passion and creative vision of today’s most visionary, emerging choreographers. Over the years, Ailey II flourished into one of the most popular dance companies in the nation with new Artistic Director, Troy Powell leading the way. Ailey II will continue to prosper as he brings fresh material and ideas to the company. Alvin Ailey II Dance Company’s performance at the Stockton PAC will begin at 7pm. Tickets for adults are $32 and $12 for children. For more information and tickets visit stocktonpac.org or call the Stockton box office at 652-9000.

Phish Phestivities Several area hot spots have pre- and post-parties lined up in anticipation of the band’s three-day string of sold-out shows at Boardwalk Hall Oct. 31-Nov. 2. By Ray Schweibert • feedback@acweekly.com

W

hile jam-band phenomenon Phish may call the frozen tundra of Vermont its home, the funky foursome seems pretty fond of visiting Atlantic City, and the feeling is most mutual. The band played a set of three sold-out shows at Boardwalk Hall in 2010, sold out three more shows at Bader Field in June 2012, and is back for three more shows at Boardwalk Hall Oct. 31-Nov. 2, where tickets are again a smoking hot commodity. Additionally, Phish frontman Trey Anastasio recorded a 10-song CD at Showboat’s House of Blues in 2007 and appeared solo here again last December, opening for Neil Young at a Superstorm Sandy benefit at Borgata. Phish is famous for its Halloween shows, having done about a dozen in a history dating back to 1986. It has only performed a handful of its “musical costume” shows, though, where it replicates another band’s album in its entirety on Halloween night. Phish covered Little Feat’s Waiting for Columbus in A.C. in 2010, and will make

Up the Chain

the resort town its first-ever repeat site for a musical costume show on Thursday night (the album will remain a mystery until then). As a welcome-back gesture, several Atlantic City sites are hosting pre- and post-Phish parties. Harry’s Oyster Bar at Bally’s is doing what it’s dubbed the “Ultimate Three-Day Pre-Show Phestival,” to be held at its outdoor courtyard off the Boardwalk from 11am each day (Oct. 31-Nov. 2) until show time, with live music, craft beers and food specials. It will include a Halloween costume contest Thursday with prizes and a chance to win tickets to the sold-out musical costume show Thursday night. Ticket giveaways will also take place at Harry’s on Friday and Saturday afternoons for those night’s sold-out shows as well. Among the live bands lined up are South Jersey jam band The Pedestrians, Philly-based band Up the Chain, acoustic duo Space Camp and the soul-driven quintet Atley Moon and the Say Somethin’

Sound Machine. On Thursday and Friday, from 10pm3am each night, the band Steal Your Face is performing during after-parties at the Hard Rock Café at Trump Taj Mahal. Born out of the spirit of Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead, Steal Your Face relies largely on a Dead repertoire with other influences including Phish, Bob Dylan, Bob Marley and standards from the history of rock, reggae and blues. The band includes bassist/vocalist Paul Baroli, guitarist/ vocalist Garry Engel, lead guitarist Curtis Eustace, drummer Matt Ginsburg and keyboardist/vocalists Lou Verrelli and Michael Kordish. Admission is free. See stealyourfaceband.com for more. The Theater at the Atlantic Club Casino-Hotel is hosting Phish after-parties all three nights, with three bands each doing a live set starting at midnight (doors open 11pm). On Thursday it will be Orchard Lounge, Damn Right and Mr. Bonkerz; on Friday it is Start Making Sense, The Werks

and Risky Disco; and on Saturday night the bands Particle, Fikus and Business Casual Disco take the stage. Tickets to each afterparty are $15 per person at the door. Guests must be 21 or older. The four-man Delaware-based band Xtra Alltra will be playing Phish after-parties at The Chelsea hotel each of the three nights. Shows start 11:30pm and end around 3am. Admission is free. Xtra Alltra is a jam band that blends funk, rock and blues into a unique blend it labels “mind control music.” Gallagher’s Burger Bar at Resorts welcomes Phish fans with specials on Northern Lights India Pale Ale and The Love beer — two craft brews from the Starr Hill Brewery of Charlottesville, Virginia. Northern Lights is a classic American-style India Pale Ale described as having full-flavored bitterness, a poignant citrus-floral aroma, and the perfect blend of barley and hops in an IPA. The Love is an unfiltered wheat beer (also called “hefeweizen”). It is distinguished by its extremely light body and flavored with hints of banana and clove. The Atlantic City Bar & Grill is featuring “Drink Like a Phish” specials on select beverages after each show. Joan Rivers

And you can always count on turning to QVC and seeing Joan spending anywhere from four hours or more at a stretch selling her fashion jewelry, which is apparently the biggest source of her second fortune. (She lost her first fortune following the 1987 suicide of her husband and manager, Edgar Rosenberg.) It doesn’t stop there. Because Rivers can be a loose cannon with her language — she never met an expletive she didn’t like or won’t say in public — she developed an Internet talk show titled In Bed with Joan. Each week, on the wide-open spaces of the censorship-free World Wide Web, she literally crawls into bed with a different celebrity for a no-holds-barred chat. The show is produced on location in Rivers’ bedroom at her daughter’s Malibu home. In between all of her video work, Rivers is a prolific author. Although she’s been known to buy many of her jokes, paying the timehonored $5 per gag line, she’s the author of 11 books dating back to her first tome, Having a Baby Can Be a Scream in 1974. Her most recent, I Hate Everyone ... Starting with Me, was published last year and became a New York Times best-seller. Not long after the book came out, Rivers found herself at odds with the warehouse-club Costco, which was refusing to sell it because it had a profanity on its back cover. Rivers decided a protest was in order, so she went to the club’s Burbank store, handcuffed herself to another person’s shopping cart and began shouting at the store through a bullhorn. Police responded to the club and Rivers’ peacefully ended her demonstration without being arrested. Rivers said the scene she caused was more about the Constitution than it was about selling books. “It’s about First Amendment rights,” Rivers told a Los Angeles television station. “Costco banned my book because of one word on the back cover. I feel like this is a country where the people should have the right to have the literature they want.” Besides, she didn’t want to push the matter too far with Costco. Always looking to save a penny wherever she can — in spite of her alleged quarter-billion-dollar net work — Rivers is a Costco member and wanted to return to the store to stock up on a few things. ■

orget her wealth, estimated by some sources at between $150 million and just a shade under $300 million. Joan Rivers is no different than the rest of us when it comes to facing one of life’s milestone moments. On the eve of her 80th birthday last spring, the comedian, TV personality, author and faux jewelry entrepreneur took to her Facebook page to express her true feelings on becoming an octogenarian: “Turning 80 tomorrow and realizing that being old stinks!” she wrote. “The only good thing about a sagging body is you can use your breasts as a scarf.” Ba-dum ching. (That’s how you officially write the rim shot and cymbal crash that accompanies a well-timed one-liner.) Rivers may be old enough to remember how drummers would punctuate the punch line of a Borscht Belt comic, but she doesn’t see herself as the grand dame of comedy. How can she when she still has someone in the business to whom she can look up to, admire and emulate? And that person is ...? “Betty White,” Rivers told People magazine just days after turning 80 on June 8. “If that’s 90, where do I sign?” Rivers appeared on White’s sitcom Hot In Cleveland earlier this year and said she was in awe of White, who’s actually 91. “She knew all her lines, was running all around. After that, I thought, 80 is nothing!” she said. Truth be told, Rivers doesn’t know what 80 is supposed to feel like. But she’s pretty sure it’s probably supposed to feel a lot older than she actually feels. “I feel 25 [or] 35,” she said. “I still take the stairs. Everything is working. I perform, make people happy [and] get a check. What could be nicer?” That’s something of an over-simplification of her life after eight decades. In addition to performing her stand-up act — which she’ll do Saturday night (Nov. 2) in Atlantic City inside Borgata’s Music Box — Rivers keeps a schedule tighter than able-bodied entertainers half her age. Her WE TV reality series Joan Knows Best — which follows the comedian and her equally head-strong daughter Melissa Rivers as they attempt to live under the same roof — has been renewed for an eight-episode fourth season that will begin airing early next year. She continues to host the E! channel’s series Fashion Police¸ where she’s been in the driver’s seat since the show debuted in 2010 and often provides the punch lines to the other host’s catty, what-were-you-thinking commentaries about celebrity fashion.

Yardy’s Jamaican Restaurant

Yardy’s Jerks Atlantic City’s Craving

Featuring authentic Jamaican cuisine, Yardy’s fills the void for jerk chicken and oxtails. By Frank Gabriel • feedback@acweekly.com

enuine Jamaican cuisine has been a missing treasure locally for quite some time. Sure, lots of places serve a perfunctory, ersatz version of jerk chicken, but we challenge you to try and find less-common island fare like brown stew chicken, curried goat, callaloo or Caribbeanstyle oxtails. Yardy’s Jamaican restaurant, situated just beyond the corner of Tennessee Avenue at 1332 Atlantic Avenue in Atlantic City, has been ably filling that culinary void since February of this year. Owner/operator Cyril Lowe, native to the resort area Montego Bay, arrived here nearly two decades past. He found a licensed contractor through family involved in various renovation and restoration projects. When the economy — particularly construction financing — face-planted several years ago, Lowe gamely ventured out on his own with a tiny, storefront eatery on Martin Luther King Boulevard. That initial success led to this new undertaking, a deep, narrow space wedged next to a tax preparation outfit in midtown A.C. The upside of his professional background was he and staffers converted everything themselves from retail store to restaurant. Adorned with the distinctive yellow hue so prominent in Jamaica’s national flag, the property easily stands out amid this bustling, urban district. Enter Yardy’s through a rear door facing a delivery alley, and you will be greeted by the eloquent essences of chef Joan Robinson’s creations. On the Friday we visited, she was halfway done skillet-browning a mountainous batch of chunked chicken, the first step towards that heavenly brown stew. While poultry worked, Robinson studiously, fas-

The aromas of this plethora of potent ingredients were exhilarating, and a reminder of the disparate influences which Jamaican cooking draws upon. tidiously picked and processed a similar size pile of oxtails, probably close to twenty pounds. With a tiny paring knife, she fashioned surgical, razor-thin incisions to remove any undesirable elements left on the pinwheel-shaped pieces of beef. On gas burners behind her, hissing cauldrons of rice, beans [peas to Jamaicans] and vegetables gleefully announced their presence. All the while, fellow employee Barbara “Roxy” Luna toiled alongside, watchful over an oven where whole, roasted pieces of jerk chicken and golden “patties” — Jamaica’s version of classic savory pies, more later — were just finishing. Robinson, clearly very skilled, is native to Jamaica’s central island parish called

Clarendon. She’s also a kitchen legacy, saying, “My mother, my sister and my aunt all operate restaurants in Jamaica.” That familial background shows most readily in her attention to detail. Once oxtails where trimmed to her stringent specifications, Robinson moved onto the foundation of jerk sauce, a complex, heady mix of peppers, green onions and fresh thyme. The aromas of this plethora of potent ingredients were exhilarating, and a reminder of the disparate influences which Jamaican cooking draws upon, like those meat patties, a final, lasting culinary tribute to the cultural impact of British colonialism. Neatly folded into almost square shapes, these warm pastries are filled with

either beef, beef and cheese, chicken or vegetables. All are seasoned magnificently and a real lunchtime bargain at just five bucks for two, including soda. Lowe, whose daughter Cindy works in the kitchen and the front of the house, seems likely to appreciate the value of good, simple home-style food. He describes a modest upbringing, saying, “I grew up with one pair of pants, sharing shoes with my big brother. I came here with $100 in my pocket.” But he’s quick to add that, “People coming from a hard life, it makes them appreciate life and be more aggressive.” This also speaks volumes about the level of ambition required to reinvent Yardy’s at their new, larger locale. To say that Atlantic Avenue has been unkind to other restaurateurs would be a serious understatement. We hope Yardy’s begins a reversal of that trend. In case you were wondering, the moniker “Yardy” — as Lowe’s explains — is slang for those of lower financial means. Coined by British press in response to violence at government-built housing complexes with common central areas called “yards,” it was usually connoted as being a derisive or pejorative. However, the term could also be applied with nostalgic fondness, as was perhaps the most famous “yard” — Trenchtown in West Kingston — celebrated by the late, legendary Bob Marley in his song “No Woman No Cry.” Lowe’s brave decision to embrace his homeland and heritage through its compelling, expressive food is just one more reason to visit Yardy’s, soon. ■

30 percent of attendees will leave with a new tattoo — will either describe their ideas of images they would like depicted on their skin, or bring with them a physical likeness. “Generally people will bring in everything from paintings to photos to drawings to references no matter what it is, and you work off that,” says Howard. “Sometimes their ideas don’t quite work and you have to re-draw it or work with them to make it apply to an image that will work well as a tattoo. Typically you do a stencil on a piece of paper and then transfer that to the skin, but sometimes an artist will just draw the image directly onto the skin.” “If you’ve got something in your brain, they’ll put it to paper and you’re going to get a tattoo that’s yours, that’s unique to you alone,” says Henderson. “[Tattoos have become] much more mainstream, and it’s a perfect opportunity to create self-expression. People use them for memorials, for tributes, and if you look at the workplace today, the workplace is OK with it. You could conceivably be in a room with 10 people now, and seven or eight of them might have tattoos.” As in years past, many show goers seek out the expo as an opportunity to be tattooed by artists they might not ever get the chance to be tattooed by again. “I think we’re going to see a healthy crowd,” says Henderson. “We’re looking at the social [media] buzz and it’s just so much more aggressive than it has been in years past. I think we’re looking at having a great weekend of ink — in celebrating getting tattooed and being tattooed.” ■

a dozen categories, including Best in Show, Best Overall Male and Best Overall Female. This will be the second year the A.C. Tattoo Expo and its more than 60 artists from across the nation will showcase their skills and wares at the Tropicana’s fourth-floor exhibition room. “We love, love, love working with the Trop,” says Henderson, who anticipates about 5,000 show-goers over the three days. “I mean, they’ve really gone out of their way to help make sure the show is as good as it can get. Everyone at the Trop is vested in this. They want to see the show come back, and every year there is more and more moving components, as we do with all our shows. We try to create those solid buzz points year after year.” The event will play host to several tattoo reality-show personalities, including Spike TV Ink Master series contestants James Vaughn, Sarah Miller and Lalo Yundo. Chris Torres, the notorious bad boy from the TLC reality series NY Ink, will also be in attendance and laying down some ink, as will “Joey Tattoo” from the Spike TV reality series Tattoo Rescue. Plenty of local talent will be among those laying down the ink too, including artist Mike Howard of Hot Rod Tattoo in A.C. “Shows like these definitely help build up a customer base — if you’re a talented tattoo artist and do good work, your name will get around,” says Howard, who began as an apprentice at Hot Rod Tattoo in 2007 before joining on as staff. He says that many show goers — and Henderson approximates about

hether you’re seeking to merely adorn an ankle with an inconspicuous inking of a loved one’s initials, or to show up this Thanksgiving dinner looking a little more like Dennis Rodman, the eighth annual Atlantic City “Drawing the Wild Card” Tattoo Expo is back with many of the nation’s best body artists who can fill the bill. The expo is Friday through Sunday, Nov. 1-3, at the Tropicana. And of course — as has always been the modus operandi of marketing guru Jon Henderson of Good Time Tricycle Productions — the three-day extravaganza will include wild entertainment, off-the-wall activities, sideshows, celebrity appearances and merchandise sales. Also the impetus behind the wildly popular Celebration of the Suds beer-and-music festival each spring, the A.C. Seafood Fest each summer, and many other area activities, Henderson strives to tweak and enhance events from year to year, never resting on his laurels. “I was always one of those kids who was told that if you keep touching it you’re going to go blind, so I bump into walls every so often,” he says. “We’re growing it a little bigger, we’re doing some of the same old tricks we’ve done in the past — some sideshows, the tattoo contest. This show’s got a lot of oomph as far as the tattoo artists we bring in. We’ve got some of the most fantastic tattoo artists from all over the country. We’ve really taken it to the next level.” The tattoo contest will again include over

Other show highlights and shenanigans include: The InkIlusionists Brothers Syxx and Seven O’Brien will be emceeing, performing vaudevillian antics, tattooing, entertaining and pursuing “their ongoing mission for world conquest!” Porn Star Meet ‘N’ Greet “Get in touch with your inner pervert” with adult film stars Bonnie Rotten, Tegan Presley and Britney Shannon, who will be hanging at the expo all weekend long, talking to fans, taking photos and signing autographs. Later they will appear at the Diving Horse Cabaret for afterparties each night. Weird New Jersey Spend some time with Mark and Mark from Weird NJ (weirdnj.com) as they tell tales of the weird and bizarre from the Garden State. The weird NJ boys will be around all weekend signing books and giving attendees the low-down on all the creepy spots to hit in N.J. Stupid Shit People Do For Money Everybody likes a chance to win some cash, and the A.C. Tattoo Expo has some fun and unique ways to make it happen. Lets face it, people will do some stupid shit to win some money. Why don’t you? Fortunate John

After years of refusing to play the songs of his seminal band Creedence Clearwater Revival, John Fogerty is back on the bayou with a new moon rising. By Ed Condran • feedback@acweekly.com

t was painful watching John Fogerty perform a generation ago. When the iconic singer-songwriter re-emerged during the 1980s, he refused to play the classics he penned, while leading the seminal Creedence Clearwater Revival. He was fighting a losing battle with Saul Zaentz, the CEO of his former label, Fantasy. Fogerty wouldn’t deliver the old songs if it benefited Zaentz. However, Fogerty, 68, let it go the following decade for his fans and himself. The vocalist-guitarist, who was born in northern California but dreamed of life on the bayou, started playing such brilliant cuts as “Almost Saturday Night,” “Lodi” and “Someday Never Comes” once again. “I had to forget about that situation,” Fogerty tells Atlantic City Weekly while calling from Tulsa. “I needed to start playing those songs again. I felt better after I did. I really enjoy playing those [CCR] songs. It makes sense that I loved playing them so much because they’re my songs and they struck some sort of nerve with people. The people enjoy hearing me play those songs and I love playing them.” That’s evident after a spin through Wrote a Song For Everyone, Fogerty’s latest album, which was released in May. The disc features Fogerty rendering CCR nuggets with some of his favorite contemporary recording artists. On one of the album’s hottest tracks, Fogerty and the Foo Fighters offer an incendiary version of “Fortunate Son.”

“I’ve been as fortunate as anyone in the music business. You can always turn it around. Life is good and I want to make some more music.” Kid Rock helps punch up “Born on The Bayou,” while the Zac Brown Band helps Fogerty rip through a spirited take on “Bad Moon Rising.” The eclectic and impressive guest list also includes Keith Urban, Jennifer Hudson and My Morning Jacket, among other artists. “This is one of the most enjoyable experiences I ever had,” Fogerty says. “I owe it all to my wife Julie. She is a brilliant woman. This project was her idea. She said, ‘Why don’t you get all of the people together that you love and sing your songs?’ That sounded like a fun idea. It ended up being one of the best things I’ve ever done during this long career. It proves that it’s good to have an open mind. There was a time in which I probably would have said no to such a project, but it worked out.” Fogerty says he was open to re-arranging his familiar tunes.

“I let the guests dictate the direction of the songs,” Fogerty says. “I wanted them to be so comfortable that it felt like I was the guest. I had a fun mindset. When I did ‘Hot Rod Heart’ with Brad Paisley, I envisioned us as gunfighters and he was Clint Eastwood and I was dead.” The laidback Fogerty, who will perform Saturday (Nov. 2) at the Borgata Event Center, has always been humble to a fault. You simply can’t outshine him, especially while jamming with him on CCR tunes. The most buzzed-about event of last spring’s South By Southwest was the Sound City Players, an all-star band assembled by the Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl, which featured Fogerty. The highlight of the band’s set at SXSW — which included appearances by Stevie Nicks, Rick Nielsen and Rick Springfield — was a jam with Fogerty, who thrilled the crowd with CCR and solo songs. It was evident that Grohl was thrilled while rendering Creedence numbers.

“Playing with the Foo Fighters was amazing,” Fogerty says. “That just gives you so much energy. I truly got a kick out of that. But who wouldn’t get a kick of that? The energy that they possess is contagious. They’re truly like an old-school rock and roll band from the ’60s or the ’70s. They rock hard and they have big hearts. It was an incredible experience sharing a stage with them and going all out.” It’s hard to believe that Fogerty is a senior citizen. He still looks and sounds like he did back in the ’80s, when he had a resurgence thanks to his hit record Centerfield. Fogerty continues to write songs and deliver vibrant performances. “I still love doing this,” Fogerty says. “I think it also helps that I met a wonderful woman.” Fogerty, who has three children from a previous marriage, has three more kids with his wife. Sons Shane and Tyler are in his band and recorded “Lodi,” for Wrote a Song for Everyone. His daughter Kelsy inspired the pretty “I Walk With You.” “That’s one of my three favorite songs I’ve ever written,” Fogerty reveals. “That’s up there with ‘Green River’ and ‘Lookin’ Out My Back Door.’ I just wish I had time to play all of my songs when I come to town. There’s only so much time. I try to play as much as possible when I come in.” The future looks bright for Fogerty, who is looking forward to crafting more albums. “I don’t see why I should stop,” he says. “I feel as good as I’ve ever felt. I’m inspired. I’m in good health and I’m very happy. This year has been a great one for me. I get to play with my sons. I have a wonderful wife and a terrific family. I look back at this and I got to play with the Foo Fighters and so many other great recording artists. This is the fun time for me. Just think about how, well, not so happy I was back then [during the ’80s]. I never thought things would turn around like they have. What’s amazing is that apparently anything can happen in life. I’ve been as fortunate as anyone in the music business. You can always turn it around. Life is good and I want to make some more music.” ■ see more online @

Jersey ‘Fresh’

Local rap duo KTBorderline has nearly 2.5 million YouTube views for its original video ‘Fresh in the Club.’ By Jeff Schwachter • feedback@acweekly.com

evin “Ke-Real” Walker Jr. and Gaetano “Tommy Gunnz” Piccirilli Jr. had no idea they were both from the Philadelphia/ South Jersey area when they met on a construction job in Nashville, Tenn., in 2005. The pair started a rap group with a couple other friends — called North-South Finest — but soon all four parted ways. Fast forward to 2007. Walker was back in his hometown of Mays Landing and Piccirilli had moved to Galloway Township where his father worked at AtlantiCare — about 10 minutes away. One day the two crossed paths at the nearby Hamilton Mall. Piccirilli, who was shopping there with his (now) ex-girlfriend, spotted Walker. “We had lost contact,” says Walker. “We didn’t have social media or Facebook [then]. I was thinking about Tommy all the time because he was a close friend to me [in Nashville]. We used to go to the club and go shopping. We had a friendship outside of music. He was a real friend. So, long story short, I was in the mall and he was like, ‘Kevin?’ and I was in shock. It’s like the lottery. What are the chances of me meeting this guy I used to do music with in a whole other state? It was crazy.” Walker, now 27, and Piccirilli, now 30, had discovered another “crazy” connection when they serendipitously ran into each other at the Hamilton Mall that day. Both of their parents worked at AtlantiCare and had known each other for years. Walker, who was working on his own musical project in a Northfield studio, asked Piccirilli to drop a verse on one of his songs. Eventually the pair produced an EP and decided to go to New York to bring it to the attention of labels. For the most part they couldn’t get past security and on a rainy afternoon carried their duffle bag full of press kits back to New Jersey. They were, however, undeterred from figuring out the modern music business and going after their share. One day Walker and Piccirilli were throw-

“We’re starting a video campaign and we want our video on major networks like BET and MTV. That’s our next step.” ing around ideas for a song in Tommy’s room, after they had formed KTBorderline and knew they had a future working together after trying out the rap game as solo artists. “We were in his room when we wrote ‘Fresh in the Club,’” recalls Walker. “I had this beat and he said, ‘this song is a hit.’ He already came up with the hook — which I usually did — but he did it this time and it was hot.” The aspiring rap stars knew they had a song that could be played in the clubs and needed to garner attention for it. That first meant investing money in a top-notch studio [Smash Studios] with a seasoned producer and then putting all of their time, money and energy behind the song once it was recorded — in November 2011. “We took this song and brought up the most interest as possible with it,” says Walker. “Whether it was radio, interviews, magazines, TV interviews — whatever. My whole goal was to get the most interest for the song.” This led to a few online and magazine interviews as well as a number of showcases, including one in Newark, performing with a group called the Jet Setters. That’s where they came in contact with Jay Rodriguez Jr. of Itchy House Films who, for about $10,000, would produce the duo’s video for “Fresh in the Club.” The production company has produced videos for such rap stars as Three 6 Mafia and Naughty By Nature. The guys dipped into their savings to get the video made. “This was much more expensive [than the other video producers we were considering], but I wanted people to take me seriously in my career,” says Walker, who was working at Revel in Atlantic City before going into business for himself. “If you won’t invest in yourself, why would a major label invest in you?” Shot in a club in Astoria, Queens, NY in

February 2012, the video for “Fresh in the Club” — within just over a year’s time — would garner 1 million hits on YouTube. Today, the video has more than 2.3 million views. A story in L.A. Weekly this past April helped KTBorderline gain a whole new set of fans from the West Coast. “We reached out to them,” says Piccirilli, who works at the Hamilton Mall. “We reached out to everyone. We also had the video and the director [Rodriguez] already had a major buzz, which holds a lot of weight. It’s all about the people you know.” In March of this year, the duo met Robert Williams, a manager whose TMarquise Entertainment is based in the Atlantic City area. “Once we got our manager, Robert, that made things a lot easier,” says Walker. “He helped us in all the ways that we needed him to,” adds Piccirilli. Walker’s business savvy also helped the video get into the 2 million hits range on YouTube. Teaching himself about search engine optimization, and how to tag the video properly and market it online, played a big part in the video’s quick success the pair acknowledges. Although the duo has gone the indie route thus far — even producing a clothes line, only available at USA Blues in the Hamilton Mall — getting a label to notice them and sign them is still an important goal. “We’re starting a video campaign and we want our video on major networks like BET and MTV,” says Walker. “That’s our next step.” Even with the extraordinary success online, the pair still believes the mainstream beckons and is still an important platform in the Digital Age. “Yes. I do,” says Piccirilli when asked if

getting on TV is still important. “When you see an artist on MTV, you’re hitting all kind of households. Same thing with the Internet, but I think there’s something about being on TV. When you’re on TV, that’s how you know you made it.” “There are major artists who haven’t broken 50,000 views [on YouTube], but the major labels have their artists on these [MTV] countdowns,” adds Walker. “For us to do stuff like that, as an independent, is a big steppingstone.” Wouldn’t it be more profitable for KTBorderline to stay on the independent route and forgo the major labels? “This business is about connections,” says Piccirilli. “It’s about the relationships these record companies have built over the years. You’ll have more leeway doing it yourself, [but”] — “Staying independent is a lot of money,” adds Walker. “It’s a lot of work.” “We’re trying to show a label that we’ve done this independently,” says Piccirilli. “We have clothing lines, we have more than 2 million hits on YouTube. We’re building up our proposal for the [right] label.” “At first, we were lazy, but once we learned the business we knew we could go all the way,” says Walker. “It takes time. You can’t give up. 50 Cent was signed with Columbia Records right before he got signed with Interscope. Eminem was shopped around; nobody wanted to sign him, he was shut down by everyone and look where he’s at right now.” When KTBorderline noticed that “Fresh in the Club” had reached 1 million views on YouTube, the pair celebrated at one of their favorite haunts — Applebee’s in Mays Landing. When the video’s views surpassed the 2 million mark this year, Walker says, he knew “there was nothing we couldn’t do. “We’re doing this on our own. I can just imagine when someone with a bigger vision and the money helps us out.” “We signed a deal with a publishing company who did Big Daddy Kane’s catalogue,” adds Piccirilli. “When that hit 2 million we got down to real business.” As the “Fresh in the Club” video continues to attract eyeballs (as of Oct. 26 the video has 2,319,315 views, up 104,000 views during the week from Oct. 20-26), more than attracting views to its YouTube video may be in the cards for KTBorderline, which this week is getting interviewed by well-known Manhattan DJ executive Vladimir Lyubovny (better known as DJ Vlad) for his VladTV show. Lyubovny is the executive vice president at Loud.com, which is part of the SRC/Universal family. His VladTV is a video Web site that “many refer to as the ‘TMZ of Hip-Hop,’ according to Williams. In December, the duo hopes to forge new relationships and potentially get major-label interest for its music, networking and meeting with music executives from record labels — including Def Jam, G-Unit, Atlantic and Epic — at The Seal The Deal Music Shopping Symposium on Dec. 14 in New York City. The Garden State-based duo knows that if they can make it there, they can make it anywhere. ■ see more online @

Top10 Favorite Scary Movies Here is a list of frightful films that would make for a fabulous scare-a-thon By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com

W

ith Halloween here, it’s time to compile a list of my 10 favorite scary movies. I’ve updated my list over the years, although the movies that terrified me as a child are still listed, since they helped shape my film critic soul. The Innocents/The Others — In the former, Deborah Kerr is a nanny who suspects her wards (Martin Stephens, Pamela Franklin) are being stalked by ghosts, but perhaps she is just demented. In the latter, Nicole Kidman stars as a reclusive mother and her two children that successfully plays tribute to The Innocents while providing its own delightful twist. Poltergeist — Ordinary parents (JoBeth Williams, Craig T. Nelson) face extraordinary and terrifying circumstances when it turns out they live in a haunted house that steals their little girl. Everybody into the pool! Directed by Tobe Hooper and written and produced by Steven Spielberg. The Legend of Hell House — The Innocents’ child star, Pamela Franklin, still has ghost problems a decade later in this terrifying haunted house tale. Sci-Fi fantasy icon Richard Matheson wrote the novel and screenplay.

Carrie — The original, not the new, not-soscary remake. Even when you know the big scare is coming, it still gets you. The Ring — The best of the horror film adaptations from Japan. It’s tale of a videotape that kills the viewer seven days after viewing it will makes you understand why videotapes are no longer around. Naomi Watts stars, with Gore Verbinski directing. The Conjuring — Saw director James Wan

Halloween — John Carpenter’s revival of the slasher horror film still makes me jump. Carpenter also created and performed the creepy music. This is the film that made Jamie Lee Curtis a star. The Haunting — This film terrified me as a child and still gives me the shivers if I watch it alone in the dark. One of the best — and best acted — haunted house movies of all time, starring Claire Bloom and Julie Harris and directed by Robert Wise. A double bill of the 1931 Dracula at 7pm and The Haunting at 8:25pm will be shown Halloween night, Thursday, Oct. 31, at the Delsea Drive-In in Vineland. n 1. The Haunting (1963) 2. Halloween (1978) 3. The Omen (1976) 4. The Conjuring (2013) 5. The Ring (2002) 6. Carrie (1976) 7. 28 Days Later (2002) 8. The Legends of Hell House (1973) 9. Poltergeist (1982) 10. The Innocents (1961)/The Others (2001)

Jerry, can you tell about the dance called the 81? Was it a line dance? Why was it called the 81? Did it originate in NJ or Philly? I know you have the answers, m man pots & pans! — Joe McCoy, Nyack, N.Y. As many music lovers know, “The 81” is almost a carbon copy of Martha & the Vandellas’ “In My Lonely Room,” which was written by Holland-Dozier-Holland. The dance was actually created at the Chez Vous Ballroom, where the kids were dancing to “In My Lonely Room” one-on-one without holding their partners. Their moves resembled a figure eight in the way they bent their knees and turned to the right and left. Jerry Ross, an independent producer, saw the kids doing these moves and together with Kenny Gamble came up with the song “The 81,” recorded by a group they had just brought to Cameo-Parkway Records called Candy & the Kisses. Will you be at VF Casino again for New

Year’s Eve? — Denise, Audubon, Pa. You bet — last year’s event was, as we say, bombastic, completely sold out weeks in advance. Last year we had the Trammps, this year we’ve got the Soul Survivors, who will bring the house down going into 2014. Tickets will go on sale in another week or two. For information, go to vfcasino.com or call 610-354-8118 and ask about Jerry Blavat’s New Year’s Eve celebration Jerry, do you know whatever happened with the production and release of the Mag Mendocumentary? — Mel K., Havertown, Pa. I was interviewed for that documentary around 2007, but all I have ever seen on it is a six-minute preview, which you can find online. I don’t know if it was ever developed beyond that point. The Magnificent Men were the first white group to headline at the Apollo, which they got because of their legendary appearance at the all-black Uptown Theater in Philly, where they were a big smash and where they later recorded their live album. It remains the best representation of a truly magnificent group. Answer to trivia: “Money Honey.” ■

The Omen — This movie scared me much more than The Exorcist with its tale of a young boy who is the spawn of the devil. Stars Gregory Peck, Lee Remick, David Warner, Billie Whitelaw (so creepy as the nanny/protector), and Harvey Stephens as Damien. Directed by Richard Donner.

28 Days Later — The most terrifying bloody zombie movie ever because these zombies convert in a flash and are a lot quicker than traditional flesh eaters. Imagine The Walking Dead zombies on speed. Stars Cillian Murphy, Brendan Gleeson and Naomie Harris. Directed by Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, Trainspotting).

shows his less gory side with this terrific tale based on a true case. Noted ghost hunters/demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) are asked to uncover the evil in a Rhode Island home owned by George and Carolyn Perron (Ron Livingston, Lili Taylor). Horror that feels palpable and real depends on the quality of the actors expressing that fear, and the quartet in The Conjuring are first rate. The film is old school without being old-fashioned, and will have you shuddering with every creepy moment. Just out on DVD and Blu-Ray.

O

nce again, greetings and salutations. Yep, fall has arrived, and shortly we’ll be changing the clocks. Boggles my mind how fast this year is going — before you know it, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and the New Year. Lots of folks are asking whether we’re going to have any special events at Memories now that we have a new look. Yes, we will be doing some special things, and Memories will be available for private parties and events for the holiday season, so stay tuned. And as you read this column, the Geator and the Geator Gold guys and gals are about to sail off with Time-Life’s Malt Shop Memories cruise. Tell you more about it when we get back. In the meantime, you can still hear the Geator Monday through Friday 7-9pm on WTKU Kool 98.3, Saturdays 6-7pm on WXPN 88.5, and Sunday from noon-2pm on WOND 1400 News Talk Radio, which hosts The Geator, Frank and Friends. Before we get to your questions, I’ve got a trivia question for you. Exactly 60 years ago, on Oct. 31, 1953, the Drifters, with Clyde McPhatter singing lead, made the R&B charts for the very first time. The record became a No. 1 hit. Can you name it? Answer at end of column. Now let’s ask the Geator.
