WO HOLIDAY

By David J. Spatz

OR NEARLY 30 YEARS, BILL COSBY’S ALBUM and concert movie titled “Himself” has been considered the benchmark for pure family comedy. Jim Breuer figures it’s time for someone to offer an updated look at family life in America, and he knows the perfect comedian to tackle the challenge. Himself. At 45, with a wife of 20 years, a teenage daughter and another knocking at the teen door and an elderly father living with him, Breuer is looking to create the modernday standard for family-friendly chuckles. Each time he comes home, the former “Saturday Night Live” cast member never knows what potential joke he’ll discover. “Put it this way,” he says of his family living arrangement. “I’ll never run out of material.” Some would see Breuer’s home life as a major headache. But the comedian, impressionist and ersatz heavy rocker’s brain is wired a little differently. He sees it as an opportunity to broaden his comedy horizons. The set he’ll perform Friday night (Nov. 2), at Borgata’s Music Box, probably has as much family material as Cosby’s trailblazing 1983 album. Maybe more. “There’s more powerful family material than most people have ever seen before, but it shouldn’t be mistaken for ‘soft’ comedy,” Breuer says during a phone chat from his Morris County, NJ home. That’s not to suggest that Breuer has added a vulgar edge to his act. To the contrary, he’s one of the few comedians of his generation who works 100 percent clean on stage. Even when he was touring with Jim Norton, Dave Attel and Bill Burr, who carpet-bombed the audience with their expletive-laced sets during the Anti-Social Comedy Tour, Breuer kept it clean. “What a lot of people don’t know about me is that I work totally clean,” he says. “Even during the Anti-Social tour, where truckers were even going, ‘Wow, that’s a new one,’ I didn’t curse or go dirty.” Breuer, whose ticket to headliner status came from things like his “Goat Boy” character and his killer impression of actor Joe Pesci on “SNL,” tested out his new material earlier this year when he did a tour of 30 college campuses. And he found that crowds half his age could relate easily to his observational family humor. He initially felt his new comedy direction would alienate him from younger audiences. But the opposite proved to be true. “I wrecked those places,” he says of the crowd’s enthusiastic response to his new shtick. “It’s not Disney material, but at the end of the day, all I was doing was talking about my dad.” That’s just one of Breuer’s new artistic directions. The other isn’t exactly new, but it’s one he’s in the process of refining. Breuer is a big fan of hard rock – especially ‘80s metal – and he’s going to get back to his “heavy metal comedy” work next year. He first began mixing jokes with music in the late 1990s, when he developed an act that was alternately kick-ass music and LMAO comedy. “As a 16-year-old kid, I used to fantasize about doing Like us:

facebook.com/ACWeekly

Jim Breuer brings his show to Borgata’s Music Box Friday, Nov. 2 standup with heavy metal,” he recalls. “I used to fantasize about doing little concert tours where it was me opening up for myself as the band.” He filmed a metal-music special for Comedy Central about 10 years ago, but it didn’t capture what he did on his heavy metal comedy tour. “So I put it to rest for a while, but people kept asking me when I was going to do it again, so I began playing around with it last year,” he explains. He became even more convinced he needed to get serious about his comedy-music show last summer, when he and his metal band were one of the headliners at Metallica’s three-day Orion Music + More lifestyle festival at Atlantic City’s Bader Field. Breuer has had a long relationship with the band that dates back to his “SNL” days when he began hanging out with Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich. That led to other projects with the band. But he’s quick to point out that the band always approached him with the projects. He never lobbied them for gigs, which is why he felt “honored” when the heavy metal gods asked him to be the only comedymusic performer at Orion. Breuer performed on one of the side stages at the festival, and drew about 6,000 people to his show. But that wasn’t the biggest kick he had at Orion. “When you have (Metallica guitarist) James Hetfield introducing you, that’s like a tip of the cap,” he says. “It doesn’t suck at all when the king of metal goes up and says, ‘here’s a funny guy.’” He said he nearly jumped out of his skin when he was asked to be part of Orion. “I knew my music and standup would do really well for them, because their crowd and mine are the same,” he adds. “I’m going to record some new comedy and music and then go out on a full-blown tour next year.” ■

OT LONG AFTER CAESARS Atlantic City booked the Steep Canyon Rangers for a Nov. 2 gig, someone asked me if I’d ever met the band’s occasional front man, a pretty darn accomplished banjo picker. Perhaps you’ve heard of him. His name is Steve Martin. Yep, that Steve Martin. The wild and crazy actor and skilled practitioner of the art of absurdist comedy. Meet him? Heck, Steve Martin gave me the finger once – in front of 1,500 people. Then we had dinner. Of course, there were 10 years of separation between those contrasting moments in time. It was December 1978, and Resorts International Casino Hotel was six months into its monopoly on Atlantic City gaming. And casino marketing was still in its infancy, since this was new territory for the first casino to open outside of Nevada. But the marketing and entertainment minds at Resorts knew that December was going to be a tough month even for the only casino within thousands of miles. Resorts had already presented some of the biggest names in show business, both established and contemporary. But they knew they needed something really special during the post-Thanksgiving run-up to Christmas and New Year’s Eve. See, back then, state gaming laws required casinos to present entertainment in their main showrooms seven nights a week. It was all part of the state’s grand plan to make Atlantic City more Monte Carlo than Las Vegas. One way to do that, the theory went, would be to offer shows all week so that card games and slot machines weren’t the primary focal point of each pleasure palace. (Even then, someone was thinking of non-gaming attractions.) In order to compete with Santa Claus, Resorts needed something that would grab headlines and fill the 1,500-seat Superstar Theater for seven nights. So they booked arguably the hottest comedian on the planet: Steve Martin. Through appearances on The Tonight Show, a hilarious HBO On Location special and appearances on Saturday Night Live, Martin was a bona fide comedy star who was still a year away from his breakout movie role in The Jerk. I was really looking forward to opening night, because I had seen him open for the Nitty Gritty Dirty Band in 1970 and howled at his HBO special. I remember LMAO watching him blend comedy with playing the banjo, wearing the fake arrow-through-the-head and his signature line, “Well excuuuuuuuse me!” While I may have been a fan, I also had a job to do that night. I was there to review his show for The Press of Atlantic City. To thunderous applause and a standing ovation, Martin – in his familiar white suit – made his Atlantic City debut. And for 90 minutes, he proceeded to disappoint the hell out of me. It’s not that he wasn’t funny. He had the Like us:

66

facebook.com/ACWeekly

audience in stitches. Only, I’d heard and seen it all before. Virtually every line and every wellcrafted sight gag that I first saw live in 1970 and then watched again on his TV special six years later was identical. In my review, I expressed my disappointment as both a fan and a critic. I chastised him for phoning in the show and suggested – without using the word – that perhaps he was lazy. He’d perfected an act and didn’t feel the need to challenge himself by creating new material. Martin was not amused. The following night, he walked onto the Superstar Theater stage holding a copy of The Press, specifically my review. And he proceeded to read the review to the audience, which began to boo me in absentia. After his dramatic recitation, Martin asked the audience to join him in a salute to me – and he raised his middle finger high. Fifteen hundred people followed suit, and the incident actually rated a small blurb on the Associated Press entertainment wire. Fast forward 10 years. Trump’s Castle books Martin for his first club gig in nine years. Only instead of being the headliner, he insists on being the opening act for the ‘60s band Rob Grill and the Grass Roots. And instead of being Steve Martin, he appears for just seven-minutes as a silent comedy character known as The Great Flydini. (Space is limited here; Google it to learn more.) After the show, I was invited by former Trump entertainment vice president Tom Cantone to have dinner with Martin and several others. As we broke bread, I asked Martin if he remembered the night he flipped me the bird. He did. And he remembered why, too. He remembered it was my review accusing him of being lazy. And then he did something that floored me. He admitted I was right. He said he had been through a lazy period, and it wasn’t fair to his fans. I told him I was a fan. “I’m sorry,” he told me. “No need to apologize, Steve,” I told him. “For that one night, I gave you some new material to work with.” Steve Martin stared across the dinner table for a second. And then he cracked up. So, have I ever met Steve Martin? Are you kidding? I made him laugh one night over dinner.

Try Dancing at this Club Every Thursday, Studio 18, a newly opened dance studio in Somers Point, hosts a party at its home base in the Greate Bay Racquet & Fitness Club. By Ray Schweibert

W

ITH ITS HIGH CEILINGS, decorative mural, glittering chandeliers and granite countertop bar, Studio 18 in Somers Point is anything but your typical dance studio. But then again, Alex Kazmarck is not your average entrepreneur. Studio 18 is so named because it was 18 years in the making. Kazmarck, a retired businessman who for years enjoyed ballroom dancing as a hobby, traveled the tri-state area during that timeframe in search of a location to build his own dance studio, ultimately opting to create one in his own backyard. And since dance can serve as an excellent vehicle for staying fit, Kazmarck found synergy at the Greate Bay Racquet & Fitness in Somers Point, proceeding to build his dream. “This is a dance studio built by a student for students,” says Kazmarck, who has a staff of 15 professional dance instructors. “We put the student first, instead of the studio first. There [are] classes for social dancers as well as serious competitors from ages nine to 90.” Every Thursday night, Studio 18 will host a dance party that is open to the public, serving the dual purpose of a meet-and-greet/social setting as well as the chance to practice in a club-like environment. The dance party starts at 8:15pm with two complimentary group dance lessons, one for salsa and one mixed ballroom. At 9pm the party branches off into two rooms – one for ballroom and the other for salsa and Latin. A light buffet is provided around 10pm. Guests can dance until midnight. The cost is $20 at the door and $15 in advance. Guests are welcome to BYOB. Kazmarck was born and raised in Ocean City. His first entrepreneurial endeavor was a T-shirt business that would eventually morph into the Surf Mall, one of O.C.’s most successful businesses. He’s had several other entrepreneurial endeavors that panned out positively, but none have been as intriguing to him as ballroom and Latin dance – a passion that led to his giving up several old hobbies (a regular round of 18 holes of golf being among them) to Like us:

“There are classes for social dancers as well as serious competitors from ages nine to 90.” travel the tri-state area as a student of dance. Studio 18 is crafted in such a way as to emulate Kazmarck’s devotion to dance. It is apparent in every detail, particularly its main dance floor, which Kazmarck chose to call the Sonrisa Ballroom since “sonrisa” is Spanish for smile. Smiles, says Kazmarck, are what he ultimately hopes to achieve with every student seeking to take up the art of dance. The studio offers classes and private lessons in ballroom, Latin, swing, belly dancing, pole dancing, country western, hustle, hip-hop, ballet, tap, jazz, flamenco, merengue, bachata and zumba fitness dancing. The main dance floor features a large space designed to resemble an actual ballroom. Separate mirrored rooms adjoin the main ballroom including one equipped with floor-to-ceiling poles for pole dancing. The dance studio is open seven days a week, from 9am to 10pm Monday through Saturday, and 9am to 6pm Sunday, and is currently offering a 40-minute introductory lesson for $25. This year she will do the same at the Atlantic City Boys and Girls Club to speak to them about achieving goals and hard work for a successful career. That is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 1, 1-4pm, if the clean up after Hurricane Sandy doesn’t cancel it. Jewel will not be skating. The native of Alaska does know how to skate but hasn’t done it for a long time. However, she seemed like a good choice as musical guest, because as a new mother herself (son Kase is 15 months old), she decided to write a children’s book, “That’s What I’d Do,” and has made two children’s albums “Lullaby” and “The Merry Goes Round.” The show will be broadcast nationally on NBC on Nov. 18 from 4-6pm as part of the Pandora NBC Skating Series. ■

Beyond college and minor league hockey, Boardwalk Hall has hosted professional ice skating shows the past two seasons. Caesars Tribute II: Celebrating the Ladies of Ice Skating was presented last year, following 2010’s Caesars Salute to the Golden Age of American Skating. This year’s event offers a family twist on the skating show. Musselman’s Apple Sauce Family Skating Tribute Presented by Caesars features special musical guest and the four-time Grammy nominated singer-songwriter, Jewel (see interview with Jewel online at acweekly.com). The family-themed ice skating show will be hosted by skating champions (and

It should really come as no surprise that Longport’s signature eatery, in fact the only year-round food operation, is far from ordinary. found her own haven. The little café had been lovingly restored by then-owner, retail magnate George Siganos, to its original 1950’s decor. With a 10-top lunch counter and tables for another 40, it offered an anachronistic, smalltown seashore charm. Since taking over, Nika has nearly doubled that seating capacity with the removal of a wall to create another, separate space including cozy booths along the furthest wall. Breakfast, always the lead player here, includes several signature items. Most notable among these is Chef Guadalupe Quintero’s namesake, Lupe’s Day Break, poached eggs atop an English muffin with Canadian bacon, cheddar cheese and salsa.

That final item, which has become wildly popular with customers, is the product of Mexico City native/kitchen staffer Yesem Alvarez. The oatmeal pancakes are another house specialty. Originally requested by customer Jerry Jacobs, who had sampled a similar item at Margate mainstay Steve and Cookie’s many years ago, Nika calls them “one of our biggest sellers.” They in turn begat the oatmeal waffle, a rare find around these parts. Ozzie’s version comes covered with an array of kiwi fruit, strawberries, blueberries and bananas. But Nika’s favorite just might be the crunchy granola French toast: egg-battered Challah bread coated with granola – plus the option

of almonds, walnuts, bananas, blueberries, strawberries or chocolate chips – presented in the shape of a pyramid. From the lunch menu, she describes salads as: “Absolutely fabulous, healthy, nutritious and filling.” With more than a dozen varieties, she particularly recommends the Thai grilled chicken; spring mix, romaine, cucumbers, tomatoes, potatoes, onions, carrots, mango, cilantro and mint with a Serrano chile vinaigrette; and the vegan-friendly ‘Paula.’ Soups, always an essential part of the midday experience this time of year, include a trio of French onion, tomato basil and soup du jour including choices like chicken noodle, chicken orzo and chicken Florentine. Nika allows that she is “very health conscious” and “tends to stay away from creambased soups.” Which doesn’t mean that those seeking heartier fare will be disappointed here: choose stuff like Ozzie’s burger topped with pico de gallo, provolone and guacamol; Ozzie’s cheesesteak with grilled onions, mushrooms, peppers and house-made red sauce or the hefty Vic’s double cheeseburger. As befits its sandwich-counter ambiance, an assortment of deli fare – tuna and chicken salad, ruebens, corned beef specials – round out an “Ozzie Favorites” section of the lunch menu. The most interesting sounding item to us, however, was a chicken pita press. Grilled chicken, caramelized onions, Swiss cheese, bacon, lettuce and tomato are piled atop a halved pita, covered with the other half of the pita like a hamburger bun, pressed and grilled. A most unusual menu item – from a legendary local spot that is just as unique. ■

ONGPORT, NEW JERSEY IS anything but the typical Jersey shore community. Tucked into the southwestern corner of Absecon Island, barely one-and-a-half miles square, this narrow spit of land still manages to encompass some of the most valuable real estate on the East Coast. The borough even possesses a quirky, storm-related geography; its initial 10 blocks disappeared during a winter gale in 1916. So, it should really come as no surprise that Longport’s signature eatery – in fact, its only year-round food operation – is just as far from ordinary. Ozzie’s, at 2401 Atlantic Ave., has been in business “as we know it” since 1952, according to owner/operator Likie Nika. Founded in 1948 as a small neighborhood market, it was expanded four years later by the Lenzsch family to include a luncheonette. In keeping with that theme, Nika, who has owned the sparkling retro-style restaurant for 12 years, is no standard-issue proprietor either. Born in Greece, she served as an aide to Democratic representative Mendel Davis of her home state, South Carolina, from 1975 through ’79. Married 33 years, she and husband George met during that D.C. era, when he was similarly employed in the office of California Senator S.I. Hayakawa. After relocating to southern New Jersey in 1980, Nika obtained a position with the office of Ocean City’s Bill Hughes — a 10-term House member and eventual Ambassador to Panama – lasting 14 years until his retirement. But it was at the turn of the last century when the energetic Nika, at the urging of her husband – formerly a maitre d’ himself –

“The Entire Country Has Been Watching”

Like us:

The company says it may require more than a week to restore electric service to its customers in the barrier island communities. Even Halloween was cancelled in the state when, on Wednesday morning, Oct. 31, Christie signed Executive Order 105, “postponing Halloween celebrations across New Jersey until Monday, November 5, 2012 as a result of continued unsafe conditions in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.” Christie, who has been holding press briefings on the storm daily since last week, said in a statement: “In too many communities in our state, the damage and losses from this storm are still being sorted out, and dangerous conditions abound even as our emergency management and response officials continue their work. As Governor, it is my responsibility to use all available resources of the state government to protect against the emergency created by Hurricane Sandy — postponing Halloween celebrations by five days is a commonsense and necessary step to accomplish that.” Christie spent several hours on Tuesday in a helicopter touring the damage to the state and Jersey shore towns such as Avalon and Sea Isle. He commended President Barack Obama for his constant communication with regard to the state of emergency and his timely offering of FEMA and other assistance to the many people and businesses affected by the storm throughout the state.

In Sea Isle and nearby barrier islands in Cape May County — as with beach towns up and down the New Jersey coast — the storm caused severe beach erosion. Sea Isle Mayor Leonard Desiderio said on Tuesday he is not sure when residents will be allowed back on the island: “The governor has issued an order that all access to the barrier islands be restricted until further notice. At this point in time, it is still unknown when we will receive the ‘all clear’ to allow residents back onto our island. Please be assured that we are doing everything possible to address all of our issues in order to make the city safe for your return.”

ON WEDNESDAY, HALLOWEEN DAY— less than a week before the 2012 presidential election — President Obama traveled to Atlantic City to join Christie in viewing the storm damage. Air Force One landed around 1:15 pm at the Atlantic City International Airport. Obama then toured Atlantic City and the Jersey shore by helicopter for an hour, before his motorcade made its way north to Brigantine to visit the Brigantine Beach Community Center, which is serving as a shelter for flood victims. According to reports the president’s motorcade went through Atlantic City, but did not (See more photos, video and coverage on stop on its way from the airport to Brigantine, Hurricane Sandy and aftermath updates at following the helicopter tour. acweekly.com)

Gov. Christie and President Obama visit shore residents at the Brigantine Beach Community Shelter Tuesday afternoon.

Obama told those at the center that Christie is working hard to help those affected by Sandy. “I want to let you know that your governor is working overtime,” Obama said. “The entire country has been watching what’s been happening. Everybody knows how hard Jersey has been hit.” “It’s really important to have the president of the United States here,” said Christie. Obama, who said, restoring power is his “top priority,” added: “We’re going to be here for the long haul.” On NBC’s Today show Wednesday morning, Atlantic City Mayor Lorenzo Langford spoke to Al Roker live from the resort. Roker started the story by telling America: “You can’t think of Atlantic City without thinking about one of its most iconic features, the Boardwalk. Well, I’m on the Boardwalk, but the problem is the ocean where the Boardwalk should be is about 200 yards that way, and that’s the danger here when you have the power of water and it meets a force and something like a Boardwalk, even though as sturdy as this thing has been, and it stood for 80 years, it was no match. And it is now pushed as far south as parts of the casinos that make this city famous as well. But, even though it has been destroyed, the mayor here says they will rebuild.” Langford told Roker: “[The Boardwalk] can be replaced. Human lives cannot be replaced, and so we’ll do what we can and what we must and what we should do to regroup and pull ourselves together. We’ll rebuild this Boardwalk, no doubt about it.” In response to what he called “extensive damage” in the city, Langford added: “I see the glass as half full and not half empty. Given the catastrophic nature of this storm, I certainly expected it to be a lot worse than it was.” When Roker brought up the dust-up between Langford and Christie — which has made international headlines — in connection to the governor’s evacuation orders for Atlantic City and his Monday night press conference when he scolded the mayor on TV for not doing “his job,” Langford responded: “I can tell you, we said on a number of occasions, both in the electronic media and print media that residents should heed the clarion call and get out of the city. We said it repeatedly and consistently.” When Roker asked Langford what longterm challenges A.C. faces in the aftermath of Sandy, he said, “To rebuild this Boardwalk and other parts of the city and make it bigger and better than it was before.” ■

ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY • NOVEMBER 1 - 7, 2012

HE ATLANTIC CITY BOARDWALK will never be the same. The Jersey Shore, says Gov. Chris Christie, will never be the same. Those affected by the devastating flooding in Atlantic City and up and down the New Jersey coast will never be the same. Some in New Jersey lost their lives due to Hurricane Sandy. Others risked their own lives to save others. The total death toll from Sandy climbed to 133 people (including those lost in the Caribbean) by late Wednesday afternoon. The region is still under a state of emergency as of Wednesday, with the Atlantic City casinos not expected to re-open until Thursday, Nov. 1, at the earliest. The gaming halls have been shuttered since Christie evacuated the resort on Sunday afternoon as Hurricane Sandy headed to the Jersey shore, where it made landfall Monday evening. The historic storm that hit Atlantic City around 8 pm Monday night, Oct. 29, destroyed its coastline and part of its Boardwalk and submerged the resort in several feet of water. Thousands of power outages were reported in Atlantic and Cape May counties. Electricity was restored in Atlantic City around 7 am Wednesday morning. For city residents who didn’t evacuate, low tides Wednesday morning allowed some — especially in the battered Uptown and Inlet sections of the city — to finally get out of their homes. “Most of my friends left for Mays Landing on Sunday,” Nastassia Davis, an Atlantic City resident (and freelance photographer) told AC Weekly on Wednesday. “But I stayed. They aren’t going to be let back in the city, they say, until Friday.” Davis says when she finally went outside after days of being trapped in her home due to the several feet of flood waters surrounding it, she saw wooden boards from a portion of the Boardwalk washed up across Revel Boulevard. “It was flooded all the way up to the inlet and Uptown,” says Davis. “Whatever was in the street at the time — such as cars, including my grandfather’s — was ruined. The water was really deep, covering cars in the inlet. It was crazy and scary.” The part of the Boardwalk that was washed away — from around Revel north to the Flagship building — was decades old and in need of repair. Other sections of the reconstructed Boardwalk are still intact, says Davis. In nearby Somers Point, the iconic fishing pier off the municipal beach was washed away. Other towns suffered severe damages. On Wednesday afternoon, Atlantic City Electric said that electricity had been restored to half of its customers impacted throughout the region, adding that 90 percent of the mainland customers’ power was expected to be restored by midnight on Sunday, Nov. 3.

Big Plans for Garden Pier

The Atlantic City Free Public Library now manages the A.C. Historical Museum inside the newly renovated Garden Pier, and has a lot of interesting enticements in store for visitors. By Ray Schweibert

NOVEMBER 1 - 7, 2012 • ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY

I

N LATE AUGUST, FOLLOWING A $2.5 million overhaul of the historic city-owned Garden Pier, came the announcement that one of the city’s services, the Atlantic City Free Public Library (ACFPL), would be operating the pier’s adjoining Atlantic City Historical Museum. The pier has served as longtime home to both the museum and the Atlantic City Art Center, and is located across from Revel on the northern end of the Boardwalk at New Jersey Avenue. Shortly after that announcement, the library released a statement that it had plenty in the works for the Historical Museum, including the incorporation of select items from its distinguished Alfred M. Heston Collection, introducing new displays and exhibits, eventually providing free wi-fi access and more public seating in and around the pier, and is considering partnerships with outside organizations for displays of other collections at the museum as well. The Heston Collection is named for Alfred M. Heston (1854-1937), a former Atlantic City dignitary, historian, and one of the founders of the ACFPL. The bulk of the Heston Collection is housed at the library’s main branch in downtown Atlantic City (1 North Tennessee Ave.), and includes numerous published and unpublished works, photographs, postcards and other memorabilia of Atlantic City’s storied history, and an extensive array of resources on A.C.’s history available to the public. “The response the museum has received since we assumed management has been wonderful,” says Don Latham, public information officer for the ACFPL. “We are getting about a thousand people a week, which is great considering we didn’t open until the end of summer. The local residents who have visited are happy that the museum has re-opened. We’re also seeing a large number of tourists from different states and countries on a regular basis as well.” Latham says the ACFPL is looking to create more space to accommodate an expansion of the Heston Collection at its main branch, but in the meantime the transfer of some of the collection’s components to the Garden Pier’s Historical

Museum has broadened the collection’s exposure to more visitors and enlightened a greater number of area residents to what the collection entails. “We have been able to make items from the library’s Heston Collection of Atlantic City history more accessible to the public by showcasing them at the museum,” says Latham. “We used images from Heston to add two new exhibits to the museum – “The Atlantic City Experience: 1920’s” and “The Magic of Kentucky Avenue.” The ‘20s exhibit includes shots of Nucky Johnson, and the “Kentucky Avenue” exhibit highlights some of the businesses, including the legendary Club Harlem and the entertainers who performed there. Our plan is to frequently add new exhibits but also to refresh the existing ones.” Back in February, a construction project made possible through joint financial contributions stabilized the Garden Pier’s substructure, removed an unsound section of its furthermost ocean side (and thereby maximized ocean views for visitors), and enhanced visually and aesthetically the entire interior and exterior. The project included new facades for the Historical Museum and Art Center, established new lighting and landscaping, and added new decking and fencing around the entire property. Much of the concrete debris from demolition was hauled out to

sea and used to bolster the Great Egg Reef eight miles offshore. The $2.5 million renovation included about $750,000 (plus the purchase of the wood-decking materials) from the city, $1.5 million from the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority, and $300,000 from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. Many new programs have been put in place by the ACFPL since assuming management of the museum, the next of which is entitled “The Atlantic City Experience: The Night Clubs and the Northside.” It is scheduled for 2pm Saturday, Nov. 10, at the Historical Museum, and Ralph E. Hunter Sr., the founder of the AfricanAmerican Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey, will be the guest speaker. “We held our first program earlier [in October],” says Latham. “[Author/historian] Vicki Gold Levi and our Heston archivist, Heather Perez, spoke about Atlantic City in the 1920s. They’re both historical consultants for [the hit HBO series] “Boardwalk Empire.” We had a tremendous turnout for that discussion. We’re thrilled to have Mr. Hunter as the guest speaker for our November program. He’s a joy to watch in action. He’s such a great historian and storyteller. “Beginning in 2013 we are going to offer the Second Saturday Speaker Series,” adds Latham. “In addition to having

these discussions, which will take place in the museum’s community room, we also have some additional special events planned. I think people are really going to enjoy them.” The Garden Pier was originally built in 1913 as the seventh of what could be labeled Atlantic City’s golden age of piers. In 1918, the marquee magician of that era (and undoubtedly one of the most famous escape artists of all time), Harry Houdini, fashioned a daring escape in front of a packed vaudeville house called the Keith Theater on the far ocean end of the 700-foot pier. The then privately owned pier also featured a landscaped courtyard, a pond, gazebos, art displays, and a typewriter as big as a house that was as much a novelty item as it was a tool to teach children about the age of mechanization. In 1921, the first Inter-City Bathing Beauty Contest participants strutted before judges at the Keith Theatre in what would eventually evolve into the Miss America Pageant. John Philip Sousa’s marching band, Paul Whiteman’s Orchestra and singer/entertainer Rudy Vallee all performed at the Garden Pier along with an expansive variety of entertainment and the biggest names of the day. The Pier fell on hard times in the mid20th century. In 1944 a summer hurricane caused severe damage but left most of it standing before it fell into further disrepair. The city of Atlantic City eventually took ownership, demolished it, and rebuilt it in time for Atlantic City’s Centennial celebration of 1954. The new Garden Pier had an art deco look (as it does today) and an outdoor amphitheater where the Keith Theatre formerly stood. Economic hardships would again befall the pier and a 1981 fire gutted its Art Center, but the center was redesigned and reconstructed in 1994 and is now situated across the courtyard from the Historical Museum that the ACFPL now oversees. The museum’s hours of operation are 10am-5pm seven days a week. It is free and open to the public, but donations are accepted and appreciated. ■

play and direct, but thankfully Chbosky’s TV work gave him that clout. And, since he had the cinematic skills to realize his singular vision, The Perks of Being a Wallflower is that rare high school remembrance that feels genuine. Despair and triumph, big laughs and small, telling moments of insight, and friendship is what allows these beautifully fleshed out characters to get to us. For the Percy Jackson crowd, Lerman has to be a revelation; he was to me. He is the anchor of the story and delivers a performance that embraces all the beauty and ugliness of trying to find one’s center of gravity in a world that is always trying to spin us out of control. Last year, I noted in my review of the final Harry Potter film that while it is hard to say goodbye to characters we have enjoyed for a decade, there is also the excitement that comes from speculating about the next chapter in the film careers of Radcliffe, Watson and Grint. Watson has delivered on that promise in her official cinematic graduation from Hogwarts. She didn’t need a magic wand; her expressive eyes did the trick. Miller is also terrific as someone who has embraced his sexuality and is just frustrated that the object of his affection can’t do the same. The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a movie that embraces the agony of teenage life with love and understanding. ■

HE PROBLEM WITH THE HIGH school coming-of-age film is that it has been hijacked for dumb R-rated laughs, which is why The Perks of Being a Wallflower is such a refreshing change of pace. Based on his own novel from 1999, Stephen Chbosky (one of the creators and executive producers of Jericho) has brought real feeling and real life back to the genre. There is more to high school life than Glee – who knew? And there is more to her acting career than Harry Potter for Emma Watson, who is terrific as the fetching high school senior Sam. Sporting short hair to help put a decade as Hermione Granger behind her, Watson’s Sam and her stepbrother Patrick (Ezra Miller) are seniors who befriend the wallflower of the title, the painfully shy Charlie (Logan Lerman), best known for his own fantasy film gig in the Percy Jackson movies. Sam and Patrick sense that, like them, Charlie is an outcast in the cruel microcosm of life that is high school. Charlie has been damaged by both a dark secret in his past and the more pressing despair brought on by the suicide of his best friend. Sam and Patrick have their own secrets, but they have more experience at embracing life despite crushing disappointment. In the course of the story, they help Charlie develop the ability not to blame himself when people do things to him that hurt. Naturally Charlie develops a crush on Sam, a romance that is played out in a beautiful dance of shared music tastes, shared distaste at the stupidity of people who hide who they really are and a lot of shared humor and pain. It is rare for the author of a book to have the clout to both write the screen-
