T
he Women’s Leadership Initiative (WLI) of the United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey will host its signature fall event called “Sweet Laughs” on Wednesday, Nov. 13, at Stockton Seaview Hotel & Golf Club in Galloway Township starting 3pm. The event supports the WLI’s work in Atlantic County in positively impacting the lives of young children through United Way’s Success by 6 Initiative. “Through Success by 6, our goal is to make sure all children have access to the resources they need to enter kindergarten ready to learn, and to invest in this work it takes the whole community working together,” says Cathleen Kiernan, WLI Sweet Laughs committee co-chairperson. “One very simple way to support this effort is through sponsoring or participating in events like Sweet Laughs — sometimes a good laugh does a whole lot of good.” The event will again feature author/humorist Dr. Gina Barreca, who will present a hilarious program devoted to women’s “strategic” use of humor based on her best-selling book They Used to Call Me Snow White But I Drifted. She has appeared on 20/20, the Today Show, Oprah, Dr. Phil and also writes a syndicated column for the Hartford Courant. A limited number of her books will be available for purchase and signing by Barreca at the event, which will also include a decadent dessert tasting, hors d’oeuvres, and a selection of items for a Pink Ticket auction. Tickets are $35 and available by calling 404-4483 ext. 1182, or by going to UnitedforImpact.org/Atlantic.

ictor Grasso, a self-taught Cape May artist, has carved a meteoric career through his signature, hyper-photorealistic style. His works capture the mind, spirit and senses almost immediately. His work is dark and whimsy, sensual and childlike. Though many of his creations are based in reality, Grasso infuses vivid alternate universes saturated with reverence for the human body. Recently, Grasso has collaborated with filmmaker Frank Weiss in a cinematic materialization of two artistic minds: Grasso, Beyond the Paint. Weiss, of Wildwood, describes the film as a hybrid, a project that blends traditional documentary narrative with artistic cinema. The goal of this project was to divulge a foretaste of the man behind the work — Weiss — while communicating the fundamental nature of Grasso’s inimitable, imaginative vision on film. The film was produced by ArtC, a local organization dedicated to promoting the arts in southern New Jersey. “This is without doubt the most ambitious and creative project ArtC has initiated to date,” says Bill Horin, ArtC executive director and the film’s producer. “Frank is one of the most talented photographers and filmmakers I’ve encountered. And Victor’s work is always on the edge, both technically and aesthetically. I knew putting them together would result in something extraordinary.” Both Weiss and Grasso knew this project would be a challenging one, two artists of two different trades collaborating to bring Grasso’s masterpieces to life through the art of cinema. As a painter, Grasso nearly has total control over his subjects and medium. Releasing his full power to Weiss was outside of his comfort zone. “But as many an artist will tell you, the best work usually happens outside the comfort zone,” says Weiss. The film plays at Cape May’s Robert Shackleton Playhouse, Nov. 11 & 12. Both viewings will begin at 7pm. Tickets for the film are $12. For more information visit capemaystage. com or call 770-8311.
Alex Chilton
‘Electricity by Candlelight’ (Bar None)
O
n February 13, 1997, Alex Chilton (Big Star) was to play a two-set show at New York City’s Knitting Factory. After the first set, however, the electricity went out and most of the crowd went home. Some, such as hardcore fan (with a tape recorder) Jeff Vargon remained in the darkness. Soon Chilton appeared and a fan gave him an acoustic guitar for one of the best impromptu performances ever captured. Chilton jokes with the intimate crowd from the floor of the club, between a 17-song (none of his own) set, which was cleary meant to be just a few — for the fans that stuck around. But soon Chilton’s drummer joins in on snare and high-hat and magic is made. Chilton shows his prowess on the guitar while singing songs from the Great American Songbook, Beach Boys and Brian Wilson tunes, and others by Joni Mitchell, Johnny Cash and Loudon Wainwright III. The one-of-a-kind acoustic recording, released earlier this year as Electricity by Candlelight, is a loving tribute to Chilton, who passed away in 2010. As the liner notes (by Vargon) paint the picture so clearly: “On a nearly pitchblack club floor, Alex played with three small table candles set before him” as he progressed through an impromptu set of tunes.” A transcendental experience indeed. The bonus track — Jimmy Ray McBride’s “You Can Bet Your Heart on Me” — is a perfect addendum to this gem of an album. — Jeff Schwachter
Exit 0 International Jazz Fest Returns to Cape May By Kailin Montague
I
n 2011, the Cape May Jazz Festival, as fans had come to know it for the prior 17 years, came to an end due to economic woes. Without missing a beat, however, and with a new organizer at its helm, the Exit 0 International Jazz Festival was launched and will return to Cape May’s Convention Hall, and several other Cape May venues, Nov. 8-10. Last year the debut of the Exit 0 Fest (named after the Cape May Parkway entrance) was incredibly success despite Superstorm Sandy’s grand entrance a scant two weeks prior. The inaugural festival featured more than 40 shows by over 100 different artists in seven venues. Over 2,000 jazz and music fans turned out. This year event organizer Michael Kline is again hoping for similar success, and again fashioning the atmosphere to closely resemble that of a European festival, where guests moving freely from venue to venue. Styles of music will include jazz, soul, reggae, blues and R&B. Grammy Award winners Dianne Reeves and Eddie Palmieri will grace the stage along with the Pacific Orchestra, Kenny Garrett, Robin McKelle and many more. “This can become an iconic festival because of the qualities unique to Cape May— an unbelievably beautiful seaside town that thrives year-round, a mega population base within a three-hour drive, and an engaged, proud, friendly community that supports the arts,” says Kline. “Unforgettable music, unbelievable food choices, festival wine-tasting events, special cocktails and brews, free parking, awe-inspiring sunsets — come and see why it’s cooler in Cape May in autumn.” Visit exit0jazzfest.com for more.

The Beer Buzz Area brew guru Gary Monterosso shares some insight on evolving trends in beers-and-brewing in the South Jersey region. By Ray Schweibert • feedback@acweekly.com
A
uthor and foremost authority on all things beer, Gary Monterosso, recently co-hosted with fellow expert Tara Nurin an event at the area’s newest showcase for high-end brews, wines, spirits and small-plates fare, Atlantic City Bottle Company. The location has created quite a stir for having an exceptional selection of hard-tofind libations and a head chef with a zeal for paring craft beverages with innovative dishes. It is also the latest in a local trend shadowing a national craft-beer fervor that has the A.C. area abuzz in anticipation of what might come next. “There are about 16 or so companies that are in various stages of development in the craft-beer industry, the nearest to us being Millville,” says Monterosso. “The Glasstown Brewery, which of course is a takeoff on the town’s glass history [Millville was once a premier national site for glassmaking]. I expect to see them open this fall [visit glasstownbrewingco.com]. “Another that stands out is in Toms River, and I’m really excited about their opening early next year. The company is called Rinn Duin [rinnduinbrewing.com, named after an ancient castle in Ireland] and it’s a father and daughter who are home-brewers. They went out and hired a brewer who was apparently trained in Western Europe, so he’s tuned into those styles. They’re going to have British/Irish-style ales and a very unusual slant to doing certain things. I’ve spent quite a bit of time talking with them lately and am real excited about the brewery, because they’ve established a real unique niche for themselves in the marketplace.” More locally, Monterosso says the Tropicana has a lot in store, craft-beer wise, for the very near future. “The Trop has several powerhouse events in the planning stages for 2014. I had a meeting with them recently and kind of laid the sketch-work down for things that we’d like to do together. I can see maybe tap takeovers where, on one particular night, a certain brewery comes in and controls all
the taps. Or maybe getting some beer celebrities to come in for an event — all of this is in the planning stages. They’re really tuned into good beer there in terms of integration into all of their dining establishments, and I compliment them for that.” Monterosso’s inaugural visit to the A.C. Bottle Company [acbottlecompany.com] Sunday, Nov. 3, left him impressed with not just the inventory, but with the skill and knowledge of the staff. “It’s phenomenal,” he says. “First off, they have a chef there [Kevin Cronin] who is amazing. I do more work with chefs than I do with brewers at this point, because chefs are recognizing that there is a lot flavor in craft beers that you can either integrate into a dish or pair it with an entrée they’re serving. Chefs who can do that well are a hot ticket. Kevin can, and he also has the creative flexibility to do dishes as he sees fit. Not every executive chef has that luxury.” The recent A.C. Bottle Company event paired three courses of small plates with a strong cider, a pumpkin ale, and an IPA. “If you’re drinking a hop-heavy IPA and you drink that first, you’re not going to be able to taste anything else,” says Monterosso. “Lenny [Schafer, A.C. Bottle Company’s bar-and-restaurant manager] knew how to arrange the beers the right way. It has nothing to do with color, it has to do with hop bitterness and Lenny was tuned into that, which told me ‘this guy knows his beer.’ I was impressed. I’m really impressed with the whole operation.” n
“The Trop has several powerhouse events in the planning stages for 2014.”

s if to demonstrate there’s no statute of limitations or age restrictions on fulfilling a dream, Rita Wilson is finally living out her childhood fantasy. She’s a bona fide recording artist. But never accuse her of trading off her husband’s status as one of Hollywood’s most bankable and iconic movie stars to fulfill her dream of becoming a singer and recording artist. Long before she became Mrs. Tom Hanks, Wilson — at age 10 — had an uncredited walkon in the 1966 Elvis Presley stinker Spin Out while her self-described nerdy and geeky future husband was acting in school plays. Six years later, she had a guest role on the TV series The Brady Bunch. But it wasn’t until the latter part of the 1970s and into the early 1980s that both Wilson and Hanks really got their feet wet in the acting business. In 1979, she appeared in another clunker, the sci-fi horror flick The Day It Came To Earth. Next came a recurring role as a nurse during the waning years of the long-running Korean War television series M*A*S*H. Right around the same time, Hanks, who had been scratching out a living as a stage actor, made his film debut in the equally forgettable slasher flick He Knows You’re Alone. Several other movies followed for both Wilson and Hanks before the two met on the sound stage where Hanks was starring in the TV sitcom Bosom Buddies and Wilson had landed a guest role on the show. When her husband’s acting career began to soar, Wilson divided her time between acting and producing. Although best known today as one of the stars of the HBO dramatic comedy series Girls and the CBS series The Good Life, she’s equally well known in Hollywood circles as the producer of films like My Big Fat Greek Wedding and Mama Mia. But one lifelong artistic dream had mostly escaped Wilson as she climbed the different rungs of the show business ladder. She always wanted to be a singer. A 2006 appearance on Broadway as Roxie Hart in Chicago only served to whet her musical appetite even more. Now Wilson, at 57, is making occasional nightclub and cabaret appearances to support her debut album, AM/FM, a collection of songs that were radio staples on both frequencies between the 1950s and 1970s. The album’s 14 tracks are an eclectic mix of familiar songs that include the Everly Brothers’ “All I Have To Do Is Dream,” The Association’s “Cherish” and “Never My Love,” Glen Campbell’s “Wichita Lineman,”
Rita Wilson
Merilee Rush’s “Angel of the Morning,” and We Five’s “You Were On My Mind.” Wilson said her acting background helped her choose the songs for the album because she was looking to cover tunes that told stories. “In some cases I remember where I was the first time I heard a song and that plays into it,” she told the New York Daily News last April. “An emotional connection to the story is always good. It’s like a good script for a film. The visual aspect of each song was important. They’re almost like small movies to me. And I get to play many different parts. Sometimes I’m singing from the guy’s point of view and I’m imagining that I’m the woman he is singing about. Sometimes it’s the other way around.” Wilson said she was always singing as a kid. One of her favorite tunes, though, isn’t covered on her album — Bobbie Gentry’s mysteryfilled “Ode to Billy Joe.” “I’d sing it at the drop of a hat,” said Wilson, who makes her Atlantic City debut Friday, Nov. 8, at Harrah’s Resort, where she co-headliners with Harrah’s-bred lounge-star-turnedheadliner Linda Eder. Show business marriages, especially when both spouses are in the same line of work, tend to have a short shelf life. But Wilson and Hanks have been at it for 25 years now, perhaps because each is the other’s biggest fan and supporter. “I love watching Tom. He is a marvel. I don’t know how he does it. He works so hard but you never see it,” she said. “He loves what he does. We give each other constructive notes but they’re more like thoughts or clarifications of intentions. Tom has been great with my shows. He is very excited about the new material.” That new material is original songs Wilson is writing that she hopes to include in her sophomore album. She also wants to return to Broadway one day, but clearly music takes center stage for now. “I’m continuing to write songs. Music is going to be a part of my life from here on out,” she said. “It’s like water to me. I’m doing another album that will have some originals on it. Everyday that I get to sing and perform is such a gift.” n

epublican candidate Don Guardian defeated the incumbent Democrat, Mayor Lorenzo Langford, in a shocking upset victory for mayor of Atlantic City. Guardian, who is openly gay, will be the first Republican to hold the office in the majority Democratic city since 1990. Guardian, 60, is the director of the city’s Special Improvement District. At a celebration with supporters at the Tun Tavern, he said, “Atlantic City, I want to tell you that I thank them for giving me this opportunity. I’m not going to let them down.” In other news from yesterday’s elections, as expected, incumbent Republican Governor Chris Christie won in a landslide over Democratic candidate Barbara Buono. In the two state senate elections in our region, Democratic incumbents Jeff Van Drew (District 1) and James Whelan (District 2), the latter a former three-term mayor of Atlantic City, also won. Whelan defeated Republican challenger and Atlantic County Sheriff Frank X. Balles. The two questions on the ballot both earned yes votes. N.J. voters approved the question letting veterans’ groups keep bingo and raffle proceeds for building repairs by 89 to 19 per-
cent, and the question about increasing the minimum wage also earned a yes vote, 61 to 39 percent. Out of Atlantic County’s 176,696 registered voters, Election Day turnout was 66,903 or 37.86 percent, the Atlantic County Board of Elections said. Here are results from some of the other elections. State Senate District 1: Jeff Van Drew, Dem. 59% Susan Schmidt, GOP, 40% State Senate District 2: Jim Whelan, Dem. 55% Frank Balles, GOP, 45% Assembly District 1: Bob Andrzejczak, Dem. 27% Sam Fiocchi, GOP 25% Nelson Albano, Dem. 24% Kristine Gabor, GOP 24% Assembly District 2: Chris Brown, GOP 26% John Amodeo, GOP 25% Vincent Mazzeo, Dem. 24% Nick Russo, Dem. 23% Gary Stein, Ind. 1% Atlantic City Mayor Don Guardian, GOP 50% Lorenzo Langford, Dem. 47% John McQueen, Ind. 2%

Street Eats to Savor
‘Savor Borgata’ returns with 25 stations of casual comfort foods served by some of America’s best chefs. By Frank Gabriel • feedback@acweekly.com

hat was once merely an evening of culinary legerdemain has now morphed into a full-on weekend of food fantasies. We refer, of course, to the expanded, 2013 edition of the Savor Borgata dining series, which pretty much reaches a zenith Saturday night, Nov. 9. Within the confines of Borgata’s Event Center guests for the evening will encounter as fine a conglomeration of modern gastronomic figures brought together in one space as you will likely see anywhere on the planet. Brought together under the theme “Street Eats,” the festival is described by Borgata management as “A place to eat, drink and hobnob.” Serving as host for Street Eats is food and beverage personality Sissy Biggers, host of Food Network’s Ready... Set… Cook! Twenty-five stations will be available for sampling, including ones from mainstays like Bobby Flay (of Bobby Flay Steak), Geoffrey Zakarian (of Borgata’s signature hotel, the Water Club), Michael Shulson (Izakaya), Stephen Kalt (Fornelletto), and Greg and Marc Sherry (Old Homestead). Throw in other culinary wizards like Borgata executive chef Thomas Biglan, pastry chef Thaddeus DuBois, Aram Mardigan from Wolfgang Puck’s American Grille, Wesley Holton of the Water Club and you’ll begin to get the picture. This year, however, as they are wont to do, Borgata has measurably upped the ante, bringing yet another figure from the Iron Chef America series to Atlantic City — if only for a one-night-stand — in the form of Michael Symon. The Cleveland native has become as high profile of late as perhaps any American-born chef, particularly since his starring role ABC’s midday lifestyle/
Michael Symon
This year, as they are wont to do, Borgata has measurably upped the ante, bringing yet another figure from the Iron Chef America series to Atlantic City. food hybrid The Chew, which debuted in September 2011. Symon will in fact be offering a serving station of his own at Street Eats. Representing his burger-oriented restaurant B Spot, he and his team will be serving pulled pork sliders with sha-sha sauce, pickled red onion and cilantro on soft potato rolls. For us, what really distinguishes this 2013 version is its breadth and depth. The schedule of events, which commences on Friday night, looks like this:
Friday, Nov. 8 — A Taste of Five Culinary Masters, a four-course dinner/ cocktail party as Flay and Simon collaborate with Stephen Kalt, Michael Schulson and Thaddeus DuBois within the intimate space that is 28 West. Saturday, Nov. 9 — Flay shares some of his most celebrated recipes during a live demo at The Music Box theater. Immediately following, Symon will sign copies of his new cookbook, 5 in 5: Fresh Ingredients + 5 Minutes = 120 Fantastic Dinners inside 28 West.

The “Lunch & Learn” at Wolfgang Puck American Grill hosted by executive chef Aram Mardigian. Guests will enjoy a threecourse lunch paired with wine, while learning how to create several of Puck’s classics. DuBois — a former White House executive pastry chef who currently oversees pastry production for both Borgata and Water Club hotels — will celebrate his sweet tooth with “Confectioner’s Delight: The Art of Marzipan,” a lesson on how to sculpt delectable fruits and flowers. Fornelletto’s chef/partner Stephen Kalt will host “Holy Ravioli,” sharing expertise on the quintessential Italian stuffed pasta (as an insider tip, this could be the weekend’s most intriguing demo, with Kalt fresh off an absolutely phenomenal recent Iron Chef America victory over Alex Guarnaschelli, despite one of the most bizarre and improbable theme ingredients imaginable, jerky). Also on Saturday, Izakaya’s chef/partner Michael Schulson will host “Sushi & Sake with Schulson,” a sushi-making demonstration. Tasting events for bourbon, tequila, beer and wine seminars will similarly take place across the property on Saturday. Last but not least, wine lovers are invited to The Water Club for “Eyes Wine Shut with Master Sommelier Robert Bigelow” and a wine seminar with Francis Ford Coppola Winery. Guests are invited to continue their culinary indulgences on Sunday at Old Homestead Steak House. Hosted by restaurateurs Greg and Marc Sherry, executive chef Romeo DiBona will prepare a “Sunday Brunch” of his award-winning cuisine. Later Sunday, Zakarian, a former Iron Chef and culinary lifestyle consultant for The Water Club, will provide his own personal coda for the weekend with “Absolut-ly Fabulous” in The Sunroom lounge, where an intimate group will enjoy a four-course tasting of Zakarian’s small bites, paired with Absolut cocktails. n

When I’m here in the summertime I enjoy Brigantine. And I like the Absecon Lighthouse. I’m an avid ghost hunter and there are paranormal stories [surrounding the lighthouse.]” The holiday show runs Nov. 29-Dec. 31. Performers will be The Blues Brothers, performed by Carmen Romano as Jake and Eric Martin as Elwood (Nov. 29-Dec. 18); Adele by J.C. Brando, Johnny Cash by Paul Eve, Michael Jackson by Brandon Jones and Justin Timberlake by Scott Jordan (Dec. 19-Dec. 31, replacing the Blues Brothers). Making his Atlantic City debut for the holiday show is Paul Eve, who has been earning raves for his Johnny Cash in Legends in Concert at Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Branson, Mo. He is looking forward to his first trip to Atlantic City. Eve started doing tributes when he was nine years old. Explains Eve, a Kentucky native, “My mother used to call me a mockingbird. I was a mimic. I’d do cartoon characters, anything I thought I could duplicate. I do about 90 impersonations [including Elvis, Wayne Newton and Gene Simmons]. What Legends tries to do is create an illusion in both the look and sound, and it’s a rarity in the industry when you can find that combination. People really feel like they have seen the artist once again and it brings those memories back. “Legends is not any easy job to get because

The current Legends lineup features Liza Minnelli (Suzanne Goulet), Michael Jackson (Brandon Jones), Justin Timberlake and Elvis (Kevin Mills) and runs through Nov. 24. Scott Jordan, who does Justin Timberlake, made in Legends’ debut in Atlantic City in 2008. After his current run in the fall production, he will return for the second half of the holiday run Dec. 19-Dec. 31. Most Legends’ tributes need to look and sound like the performer, but when you are doing JT, you have to be able to dance as well. “It was very intimidating at first,” admits Jordan. “I play to my strengths. I do enough to make it look authentic. With his current album he has toned down the dancing and gone with a big band sound so I’m incorporating a little bit more of that.” Jordan’s background includes being in a couple of boy bands in the Orlando, Fl. area. One of those bands was 21, produced by Lou Perlman, who also produced ’N Sync and had a financial interest in the Chippendale dancers. When the band 21 broke up Jordan was asked to be the lead singer for Chippendales. As for making the transition to a Justin Timberlake tribute artist, “I was a big ’N Sync fan being in the Orlando area. I was 20 and I could sound like Timberlake.” He started doing JT songs at the Chippendales’ show, which toured in Las Vegas. “Someone from Legends has seen me do the show and asked me to audition. I was in the right place at the right time doing the right song.”

egends in Concert has been around for 30 years, and for more than 20 years of that history, it has presented a show in Atlantic City at various casino venues. Currently housed at the Legends in Concert Theater at Bally’s Claridge Tower, Caesars Entertainment recently agreed to sell the Claridge to TJM Properties, Inc., a Clearwater, Fl., based hotel operator. While this means the Legends show will lose its current Atlantic City theater, Mark Kogan, manager of the Atlantic City Legends in Concert show, is confident that a new home will be found. Says Kogan, “With the great relationship with have with Bally’s [Caesars Entertainment] we expect to be back in 2014.” “Legends is the pioneer of tribute shows,” continues Kogan, “and the reason it has been around for 30 years is the way they audition, choose and book performers, not just the legends like Sinatra, Elvis and Streisand, but now looking to bring in the superstars of the present. We had Michael Bublé here. People wouldn’t call him a legend, but he is an up and coming superstar who will probably have a long career, and Scott Keo is a great performer. We brought in Katie Steel as Lady Gaga and she was so engaging and entertaining. That’s the key to all the Legends shows, to put a smile on people’s faces. “This is music that resonates in people’s hearts whether it’s a legend of the past or the newer artists like Lady Gaga or Adele. We’ve had 36 different performers in Atlantic City in the last three years.”
anybody that does this [tributes], that is where they feel they need to go because Legends is the leader in the industry. Unless you’ve reached your height in the industry, you’re playing at bars, churches, VFW clubs and conventions and Legends is worldwide.” Eve spent a lot of years doing Elvis contests and three years doing a multi-tribute show at the Hollywood Casino in Indiana before he could even set-up an audition for Legends in Concert as Johnny Cash. And even though they told him immediately that they wanted him, “It took a year and a half. I was changing the oil on my tour bus when the call comes and he asks me, ‘Are you standing or are you sitting,’ and I told him, ‘I’m flat on my back’ and he says, ‘Don’t hit your head, [Legends] is going to be calling you. I want you, people in Myrtle Beach want you and people in Atlantic City are interested also.’ So I started in Myrtle Beach, now I’m in Branson, which is Johnny Cash country.” He expects Atlantic City audiences to embrace his Johnny Cash as well. “People love Johnny Cash. People in New York, in your area [the Northeast] they gave Johnny Cash his second comeback when Nashville forsook him.” ■

merica’s Got Talent season eight winner, Kenichi Ebina, is touring with fellow contestants from this past season, performing at the Golden Nugget on Sunday, Nov. 10, in Atlantic City. Kenichi, a self-taught dancer, combining free style hip-hop with mime and contemporary styles, incorporates visual illusion and special affects to make the impossible seem very real. Each of his performances is like a “mini-drama” that tells a story, says Ebina, who is also the founder of BiTriP (Bi-Triangle Performance), a hip-hop dance crew that won Amateur Night at The Apollo. Later, as a solo performer, Kenichi won the Apollo crown again, making him the only performer to ever earn the winning title twice. When performing, he collaborates
and also works on his own with Ebina Performing Arts. Atlantic City Weekly spoke with Ebina by phone, prior to the America’s Got Talent Live show at the Golden Nugget. “This show is really cool,” he says. “It’s going to be a variety performance with tons of different types of performances. So far, we’ve had really good feedback. It’s going to be a great experience for everyone.” When did you start performing? What inspired this type of performance? About 20 years ago, I started out mainly performing hip-hop and street dancing. Later on, I started incorporating different material: miming, special affects, lights and
“I’ve been performing for a while and not everyone enjoys just one type of performance. Personally, I enjoy many different types of performance so why should I stick to one form?” magic tricks. I’ve been performing for a while and not everyone enjoys just one type of performance. Personally, I enjoy many different types of performance so why should I stick to one form? More variety results in better entertainment. I’m not a good dancer. I’m not good at anything, basically. So, to entertain people, I have to put many things together. People call me a dancer, but that’s probably only my base. For most of my performances, the percentage of the dance portion is at most twenty percent. Why did you decide to audition for America’s Got Talent? I auditioned because they scouted me. They reached out to me a couple years ago. This time, I didn’t have a visa issue. They only allow U.S. citizens or green card holders. This time, I was available to take the audition in Chicago. Did you actually think you had a chance of winning when you auditioned? No. No way. I didn’t think about winning. I knew it would be a good opportunity for my exposure and good for promotion purposes. It was an accident that I won. I had mixed feelings when I won. I kind of felt guilty, happy and surprised. I felt guilty because I didn’t do a good job on the final performance. That was more for promotion. If I really wanted to win from the beginning, I would have done totally different performances geared to win. My purpose was to showcase my different aspects of performance. A few of my performances weren’t

EVENT INFO strong enough for the competition. During the show, I was showcasing the styles that I am not the best in. For the final performance, there were other performers who have done a way better job than I did. But, maybe people voted on my past performances and that’s why. I didn’t need to win because I just wanted to promote my styles. It was good for someone in the industry to get me out to realize my vision and that was good enough for me. Surprisingly, I won. Of course, I’m happy. Especially, as far as I know, the past winners on AGT were mostly singers and a single performing artist who have won. So I think that was cool that I won doing something completely different and unique. Though, I didn’t think I deserved it. If I worked harder it would’ve been a better performance. Do you teach your style of dance? I used to teach. I don’t have my style. It’s a mixture of different styles: hip-hop, jazz and contemporary. It’s a fusion. I teach different styles of dancing. I used to do workshops, but recently, over the last few years, my performances took up most of my schedule. Only sometimes when I perform will I do a workshop, but usually I won’t just do a workshop or master classes. I will incorporate it with a performance. What is the Ebina Performing Arts Company? Before, I had a group with partners. Sometimes, I would teach the other performers and we would perform together. It is basically me with variety performers, not necessarily dancers. After BiTrip, my former dance crew, I was doing solo stuff and I produced the shows. Ebina Performing Arts is a kind of company-ish thing so that people don’t think I only perform, but I produce the show too. ■ see more online @

Coheed and Cambria’s Compelling Comic Rock
Conceptual prog-rockers return to the Jersey shore with Nov. 9 show at House of Blues By Ed Condran • feedback@acweekly.com

Atlantic City, it makes me think back to my childhood.”
oncept albums are as rare as projects that take off into the stratosphere like Adele’s 21 release these days. But concept albums are what Coheed and Cambria have been all about since the band formed in 2001. Each of their seven albums are conceptual. The band recently made a pair of related concept albums, The Afterman Ascension, which dropped in October 2012 and The Afterman Descension, which followed in February. The sequel to Ascension, which included a sonic cliffhanger continues the story of astronaut Sirius Amory. Both albums are filled with ambitious, compelling prog-metal. “I like the concept album since there is more to invest in,” lead singer Claudio Sanchez tells Atlantic City Weekly while calling from Chicago. “It’s more challenging. I think it might be intimidating [for some recording artists]. I was just flooded with imagery for these albums and I had to write it.” The inspiration for the intergalactic tale was a trip to Paris Sanchez took in 1998. “I went back to that experience,” Sanchez says. “I grew up in New York and at the time, the furthest I’d been in my life was New Jersey. Going to Paris was like going to another planet. The experience spawned

this concept. But I’ve always been a big fan of concept albums.” Sanchez, 35, was bitten by the concept bug when he experienced Pink Floyd’s Division Bell tour in 1994. “That was back in high school,” Sanchez says. ”That was the second concert I ever saw and I was blown away. That show led me where I am today. Pink Floyd were the best when it came to concept albums. Seeing [the film] The Wall hit me hard. It was amazing watching the cinematic counterpart to the music. That’s what I wanted to accomplish. I love that you can just get away from everything with a good concept album. That goes for the creator of the project and those listening.” Sanchez is thrilled that drummer Josh Eppard is back with the band. “I never thought that would happen due to the way we split,” Sanchez says. “But you never know what’s going to happen in life. I couldn’t be happier. We have great chemistry in the group and we’re having a blast playing songs from these two albums. It’s all working out. I’m just off being as creative as I can.” When Sanchez is working on his concept albums, the music typically hits him first. “The story is important but that’s not usually what I work on initially,” Sanchez says. “Music starts flowing through me. Believe it
or not, a lot of life experience goes through this.” When Sanchez isn’t fronting Coheed and Cambria, he’s busy writing. He is the creator of the comic book series The Amory Wars. He has also penned Key of Z and Kill Audio, which have been co-written by his wife Chondra Echert. Sanchez also co-authoried the novel Year of the Black Rainbow with Peter David. “I love to work,” Sanchez says. “That’s what I’m all about. That’s where my passion lies. It doesn’t matter if its music, comic books or a novel.” But for the meantime it’s music as Coheed and Cambria, which also includes guitarist Travis Stever and bassist Zach Cooper, are on tour. “The cool thing is that we’re going back to the New Jersey shore,” Sanchez says. “When we go to Atlantic City, it makes me think back to my childhood. We would go to Seaside Heights and Point Pleasant for vacation. It was fun and it was the most affordable vacation for us. Playing Atlantic City brings all of those memories back. There is no place like New Jersey, particularly in Atlantic City. You have that amazing boardwalk. There’s a great vibe there, even in November. Unlike a lot of these shore towns, It’s an all-year kind of thing in
A.C. I know people will be out there when we come to Atlantic City.” Sanchez relaxes by reading super-hero comic books. “I totally love that,” Sanchez says. ”That’s always been a passion of mine. I’ve been reading X-Man and Wolverine. I love The Last Man, Preacher and that kind of stuff. You need to do something when you’re out on the road and I choose to go for the comics. It’s so inventive and entertaining.” A big question Coheed and Cambria fans wonder about is whether Sanchez will ever release non-Amory Wars related material. “That’s something I always think about,” Sanchez says. “That’s possible at some point in the future. I’ve wondered about doing something like that. It’s very possible since we still have a long future. Who knows what will happen? The future should be limitless. I don’t like having boundaries. I also like to challenge myself as much as possible. You look at how bands that have been around for years have morphed. I imagine we’ll be like one of those bands. We’ll see what the future brings. I’m really having fun with the present.” Balance and Composure open the show. ■ see more online @

War Games By Lori Hoffman • feedback@acweekly.com
T
nated by the war game visuals and lacking in the emotional connection that writerdirector Hood obviously wanted us to feel. I didn’t feel that connection and often wasn’t sure how Hood wanted his audience to react. Are we, like Ender, supposed to begin to feel compassion for the insect enemy? Are we supposed to hope that Ender doesn’t lose his humanity in the desire to mold him into the perfect killing machine? Either way, the emotional threads are just floating out there like the cadets floating in the war simulation, never attaching and engaging. The performances seem a bit detached as well. Butterfield is asked to appear cool and calm and he does as ordered making him a hero who isn’t exactly cheer-worthy. The rest of the supporting players are just there without making much impact, even though we are talking about Ford, Sir Ben Kingsley, Viola Davis and Steinfeld (True Grit). Only Arias, as the tough-minded Bonzo, generates an emotional connection as the pint-sized leader annoyed that Ender is the favorite child. My perspective comes from someone who has not read the novel. Perhaps those that have will have more at stake with Ender’s Game. n

Ender’s Game
Written & directed by Gavin Hood; rated PG-13
Playing through Nov. 23 at the Eagle Theatre in Hammonton on select dates.
ATLANTIC CITY WEEKLY • NOVEMBER 7 - 13, 2013
he last phrase of the biblical passage Isaiah 11:6 reads “… and a little child will lead them all.” In the sci-fi film Ender’s Game, based on the novel by Orson Scott Card and written and directed by Gavin Hood (Tsotsi), that phrase fits the premise of the story. It is 50 years since an insect-like species, the Formics, nearly wiped out earth, killing millions. Those that survived have been planning a counter offensive ever since and have determined that the best and brightest children are earth’s best hope for salvation. Apparently they have spent decades trying to find “the one” and now the military man in charge of that search, Colonel Graff (Harrison Ford), thinks Andrew “Ender” Wiggins (Asa Butterfield) might be the child that leads them to victory. All children worthy of consideration are sent to battle school, a space station. Ender’s older brother Peter failed the training because of his explosive temper and his sister Valentine (Abigail Breslin) was deemed too compassionate. It is hoped that Ender is somewhere in the middle. As Ender shows his skill and determination in the battle simulations, he makes both friends, like cadet Petra Arkanian (Hailee Steinfeld) and enemies, primarily cadet leader Bonzo Madrid (Moises Arias). Much is made of the notion that in order to really know your enemy you must come to love them. That notion will be a major component of the final battle simulation that will determine which race will survive. From the perspective of someone who has never played video war games, Ender’s Game comes off as stiff and artificial, domi-
